elcome to the August/ September edition.

This month I’m celebrating 9 years in publishing. This seems hard to believe when I think back to that first day asking people to believe in me and this wannabe magazine. I still struggle to believe I managed to start the magazines with no direct experience, little money and mostly no idea what I was doing! With very gratefully received help from family, friends and other businesses, the Handy Mag is going strong and 2014 has so far been one of the busiest yet. This year, being based in the centre of Malton, I’m really enjoying meeting so many more local businesses, community groups and readers. To have people popping in off the street and into the office to chat about their interests really helps. We love hearing about what’s going on, both with our local businesses and our communities. Keep those local events and community groups and charities coming! For local businesses we now deliver our two magazines (York Villages and Ryedale editions) to a total of 49,300 letterboxes. That is putting your business in front of 49,300 potential customers for less than the cost of a daily cappuccino! It’s got to be worth it! At the time of writing, we are at the end of another school year. Next year will be the last one for my eldest and I’m trying not to think about her leaving home for the big wide world. When they were small I was wishing they were more independent, now I’m sort of wishing they were small again…but maybe not! Congratulations to Sandra at Ocean Hair Design in Haxby who is celebrating 30 years in business. It puts my 9 years to shame! Until next month…

Learning is fun at

Stepping Stones Pre- School, Strensall

I

f your child is aged from 2 to 5 years, then take a step towards Stepping Stones Pre-School in Strensall! We are now taking names for September 2014, and you don’t have to live in Strensall in order to attend. Our staff are fully trained, offer teacher-led sessions and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We believe in encouraging all aspects of a child’s development, and that learning through play is essential. Your child can thrive where learning and development needs are recognised and nurtured. Benjamin, aged 4, said: “I love playing in the sand and making tracks for my cars and truck,” while Jack, also aged 4, said: “My favourite bit is outside because of the big climbing frame and you can run around.” They can also enjoy our healthy snacks and playing in the mud kitchen!

We also hold exciting extracurricular activities such as fancy dress days, a nativity play, sports’ day and theatre trips. At the end of the summer term, we hold a Graduation Ceremony for those leaving us to go to school. When transition time comes, we work closely with local schools too. Our manager, Jackie Mortimer, is a highly experienced childcare practitioner with a passion for pre-school education. She has a loyal team behind her who are all trained childcare practitioners and love working with children. Our Ofsted inspection in February gave us a ‘Good’ report. The inspector said that we: “... recognise different play, learning and development needs of children who attend. We plan and provide a varied range of age-related activities, which show our good understanding of child development.”

Vicky Fenwick, who is part of the team at Stepping Stones, explained: “I love my job and I hope that this is reflected in the work that I do. If the children are happy, I’m happy.” One current parent said: “My three children have loved it here. We can’t think of anywhere else in the world that would have given them such a wonderful start to their education. The staff are all wonderful. They really care.” Stepping Stones is open Monday to Friday in term-time for morning, afternoon and full day sessions. We accept childcare vouchers for children aged 2 and above. Do you have a child younger than 2 years? We also run ‘Tiny Steps’, every term-time Wednesday and Friday morning. Come along for a FREE trial, and meet the team.

What we’d really like to do is meet you and your child. So why not get in touch so we can show you around? Telephone 01904 442826, email: steppingstones8@ gmail.com 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ELLA... ON BUILDING A YURT Having finished all schooling forever, the idea of having zero obligations is strangely foreign. Hours that could once be filled with endless revision now have no purpose. My desk is empty (most of its contents have been ceremonially burned). So, to fix the problem of ultimate freedom, a Project has been set. We, (myself, my siblings and friends) are building a yurt, purely for lack of anything better to do. A yurt is a tee-pee like structure, made out of a wooden frame and covered in tough canvas, a bit like a tent, although bigger and sturdier. Originally, they were built by nomads who lived on the steppes of central Asia, particularly Mongolia. The whole structure can be broken down and transported quite easily - however I suspect our yurt won’t get much further than a festival maybe. It probably won’t be transported on horseback either, but otherwise we’re planning to get as traditional as possible. I’ve even learnt the Mongolian words for all the different sections. Considering that we are essentially a group of teenage novices, research had to involve a little more than simply typing “how to build a yurt” into google. But not a lot more – it’s amazing what you can find online. Armed with the internet, a couple of books, and several friendscome-unpaid volunteers, work is underway. Mum has already begun planning the interior decorations. I doubt it will end up a thing of great beauty or precise craftsmanship, but that’s not really the point. We’ll probably make a bunch of mistakes and make things difficult for ourselves and get it wrong, but if we’d wanted something made with expertise, we could have paid an expert. What it is, is something to focus on. Progressing with something little by little means that at the end of the day, you have something to show for it. It means waking up before noon, going outside and gaining skills and doing exercise – preventing the gradual slip into becoming nocturnal, which so often befalls teenagers in summer. And it’s fun, which is arguably the most important thing. Ella 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

John Steinbeck If you want drama on an epic scale, then The Grapes of Wrath will whip you into a frenzy, beat you into a pulp and then spit you out into the corner. It’s the American Dream in its purest and most stark form, and follows the lives of one family of sharecroppers, the Joads from Oklahoma. Driven from their homes and their agricultural land by the Dust Bowl, they head west in search of work and a future. Steinbeck won a Pulitzer for his tribute to the human spirit, endurance and dignity and possibly the greatest American classic ever written.

Watermelon

Marian Keyes How does it feel to have your husband walk out on you, the day your first child is born? Claire is quite literally left holding the baby, when her husband decides to up and leave her for the woman who lives in the flat downstairs. Claire packs her bags and heads back to her family in Dublin to plan her future. What happens when the philandering husband then tries to worm his way back into Claire’s affections? Stronger and much more resolute, the ‘new’ Claire must decide whether or not she’s going to forgive or forget.

Oranges are not the Only Fruit

Jeanette Winterson Sixteen year old Jeanette looks all set to lead the life of a devout missionary, carrying out God’s work and committing her life to the church, having been adopted as a child by a family of evangelists. That is until she finds a greater object of passion and a reason to commit to a mere mortal; a young female convert of hers. Suddenly the path that seemed set out for her is vanishing before her eyes and she is forced to leave behind the church, her family and her home in the industrial north of England.

The Lemon Table

Julian Barnes All the characters in Barnes’ The Lemon Table are facing the end of their lives, and all with a different perspective and reactions to reaching the ‘end of the road’. None of them will go quietly into the night, 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

and each finds a way to face up to their mortality with passion and vigour. It’s a lesson for us all, told in the most poignant of ways.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café

Fanny Flagg With good food and friends you can’t go far wrong. Idgie and Ruth open their cafe, and their arms to the local townspeople, creating a home from home for many of their customers. It’s a book that’s jam-packed with laughter, tall tales and even the occasional murder, all served up with a side of grits. Reading Fried Green Tomatoes is like tucking into some hearty southern fodder; ‘soul food’ as they say in Alabama, and good for the soul is exactly what this delicious and mouth-watering offering is.

B

ut recently there have been several sightings. The one in question is called NELLI – and those who came to the Hobby/Craft Fair at the Folk Hall in April of a small group of local people trying to do something about loneliness. NELLI stands for New Earswick Less Loneliness Initiative. There is a lot of talk in the media about the growing problem of loneliness. There is also evidence it can make people ill as well as unhappy and NELLI is trying to do something about this. We are creating friendly places and occasions where people can meet. The 3 Fairs we have run (over the last three years) at the Folk Hall are part of it and we know that a number of local people have joined new local hobby and craft groups as a result. In July NELLI launched Cafe NELLI, a drop-in cafe at the Folk Hall, where all will be welcome between

EBOR MORRIS REUNION POPPLETON

CAFE HELPING TO BRING A COMMUNITY TOGETHER

T

here’s nothing like a good cup of coffee and a slice of cake to help bring a community together, and Poppleton’s Café ‘Coffee on the Green’ does just that! Held in Poppleton Methodist Church Hall, the cafe is run entirely by volunteers with all proceeds going towards the Methodist Church or to local charities. Led by Sue Cushing (third from left in the picture), the café is open Tuesdays 10am to 12noon, Fridays 2pm to 4.30pm and the last Saturday each month, 10am to 12noon. The coffee morning concept was started in Upper Poppleton 35 years ago, and Sue started attending 28 years ago when her son was a baby. Sue then took over the organisation of the coffee mornings when the previous organisers retired two years ago.

32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Sue explains: “I wanted to open up the coffee morning to everyone, and create a relaxed space in which people could meet. Our team set to work buying new table cloths, decorations , crockery and equipment, along with lots of top quality Fair trade filter coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juices. I usually provide a selection of home made cakes and scones. It was thanks to a £500 loan from the church which enabled us make the cafe what it is today.” Chris Boothman and Sue Tolley, along with Sue Cushing, are the driving force behind the café’s success, and with 25 people on the rota, many give up their time to make the cafe a friendly and welcoming place for all. “Our volunteers are a fantastic bunch and you can identify them by their smart aprons, which also bears the Coffee on the Green logo,” said Sue. “We also have a toddler room, which means anyone can bring

the children. The toddler room has a large tree mural on the wall so the room is now called the Tree House Room.” Now summer is with us, the tables and chairs are moved outside (weather permitting), and seasonal strawberries and cream are on the menu. Poppleton resident Ian Stockley said: “The café gives the village social cohesion. Often, all the tables are full and there is a tremendous range of food and drink. The café is organised without being over-formal.” There is also the Poppleton Youth Café open for older children on Fridays from 3.30pm to 5pm. Refreshments are free! On Friday 26th September, the café’s proceeds will be presented to Macmillan Cancer Care. Why don’t you visit Coffee on the Green, meet friends old and new whilst enjoying quality refreshments that don’t cost the earth!

Malton Stables Open Day 2014 Sunday 31st August 2014

L

ocal racehorse trainers are once again throwing open their doors to the public at this year’s Malton Stables Open Day which takes place on Sunday 31st August. The event is now in its third year since being rekindled in 2012 and attracts thousands of visitors to the area from across the country. People will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a racing yard and meet the equine athletes and those who take care of them. Many yards will also be holding demonstrations and popular natural horsemanship trainer Gary Witheford will once again be in attendance at Tim Etherington’s yard. Twenty local yards will be open to the public between 9am to 1pm, and there will be a free park and ride system operating around all of the yards in Malton and Norton. In addition the outlying yards will all provide free parking for visitors that will be clearly signposted on the day.

Back by popular demand is the Celebrity Question and Answer session which will feature a panel of national and local racing celebrities. The afternoon event will also include a fun quiz to test the experts racing knowledge! This will take place in The Milton Rooms in Malton during the afternoon alongside activities for children and a number of trade stalls and refreshments in the Market Place. The Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare will also have exhibitions here and they will be showing the progress of Jack Berry House currently being built in Old Malton and the new Racing Welfare Centre in the centre of Malton.

BETFAIR MALTON STABLES SPRINT AT BEVERLEY RACECOURSE…

This year in the lead up to the event, local trainers decided that they wanted to give some of their hard working stable staff the opportunity to have their moment of glory, so have teamed up with Beverley Racecourse and event sponsors, Betfair to run the Malton Stables Sprint. The race is for stable staff working in local yards who have never ridden in a race and will take place a week before the Open Day. Each of the riders has pledged to raise £500 for the Open Day’s nominated charities, so if you would like to support our local amateur jockeys then come along to Beverley Races on 24th August to cheer them on!

Top Tips from a dental professional

Orthodontics (Part 2) When and where is the best time for your child to have an orthodontic assessment? This is a very contentious by Christine Parker subject amongst general BDS (GDC 72136) dentists, parents and orthodontists, most parents would like their child attended to as soon as possible, especially if they are being teased about their smile. About 20 years ago there was process called ’serial extraction’ where the child had several visits to the dentist and as the teeth became crowded they were removed. In reality this did little to improve the final outcome of treatment for the poor child as it was found to encourage the early eruption of the new teeth and thus compound the problem. This however may be the experience of many parents who now have young children themselves so they expect a similar process for their child. Today there is a trend to try to avoid extraction and wait and see how much space nature is going to provide. As dentists we are supposed to refer when the child has lost all of their baby teeth as the orthodontists book becomes jammed with patient who are too young to treat otherwise. Sometimes where it is glaringly obvious that there is never going to be enough room an earlier referral may be made. Patient may also seek a consultation on a private basis. NHS (free) orthodontics is only available to those children with more serious need where there is a functional problem or where the child has impacted, missing or extra teeth. Where your child has a slightly twisted front tooth or irregularity they are unlikely to be seen as appropriate for NHS treatment. Your own dentist should be able to score them against an International Index of need and give you an idea if they will need to be seen privately or by the NHS. Again treatment is rarely provided if the brushing is poor or there is a recent history of decay.

37 LEGAL WAYS TO SLASH £THOUSANDS OFF YOUR INHERITANCE TAX BILL Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

O

n the council estate where I come from, most families took benefits rather than work. But my mum worked her backside off all her life for me and my four siblings. When I left school, I bagged a job at an accountancy practice in York. There, I learned about investment and tax planning. The more I learned, the more amazed I became that people would willingly pay huge sums of Inheritance Tax (IHT) when there are plenty of legal simple ways to

stop the Tax Man getting his hands on it! There are a few reasons you’ll allow the tax man to literally steal your savings from under your nose when you die. You might believe you’re immortal. You might think you’re going to take it with you. You might bury your head in the sand. You might believe the Government led media frenzy that tax planning is somehow wrong. Yet IHT planning is no more sinister than putting your money in an ISA to save Income and Capital Gains Tax. Fortunately for the Tax Man, all of these excuses mean he’ll collect over £3 billion of this unfair tax this year alone. I’m passionate about saving IHT for ordinary hardworking families. My team and I have saved literally millions of pounds in IHT for our clients and their families. If Inheritance Tax worries you, why not contact us for a free no-nonsense chat. Or get my guide “37 Legal Ways To Slash Thousands Of Pounds Off Your IHT Bill” - details below.

A little bit of Yorkshire Heaven

D

riving along the country roads not far from the A19, you will find Alne, a pretty, chocolate box village and the Bluebell Country Inn, which offers delicious, tasty food and drink. Owned by Michael and Annette Anson, this dedicated couple have transformed the pub into a stylish, relaxing place to eat, with immaculate decor and a real eye for detail. The Bluebell Inn is open for lunch and dinner, and among their tasty dishes, there are firm favourites for starters, mains and puddings, such as: • warm bacon salad with a sweet chilli sauce; • garlic bread topped with mozzarella cheese; • chicken supreme in a cream leeks and bacon sauce; • slow roasted belly pork on creamed potato with a bbq sauce; • sticky toffee pudding; • warm caramel and apple sauce.

Michael, chef at the Bluebell, explained: “We’ve been here for 12 years and have gradually transformed the Bluebell into what you see today. “We have a log burning fire, a spacious bar and dining area; a private dining room which seats 20; plus a beautiful garden, ideal for summer evenings.”

From the garden, to the lounge and into the dining room, The Bluebell simply exudes class. Annette, whose talents helped make the Bluebell into one of the most stylish pubs in the area, explained: “As well as having a comfortable place to relax and eat, we have kept the menu quite simple and yet tasty, so people can choose from a selection of good quality meals. “We are in a rural area where there are hearty appetites, so we also keep our portions generous

without compromising on the flavour. Our prices are also reasonable, and we have an early evening menu (three courses, just £16), a specials menu and a Sunday lunch menu.” The Bluebell Country Inn is an ideal location in the summer, when the delightful gardens and outdoor seating areas can be enjoyed the most; but come autumn and winter, it’s a place that offers warm fires, wholesome food and a place to relax in and hide away for a while. Michael and Annette are a dedicated couple whose love of the Bluebell and the area is reflected in their food and in the atmosphere. The Bluebell Country Inn is open as follows: Tuesday 5.30 to 9pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 11.45 to 2pm and 5.30 to 9pm; Saturday 5.30 to 9pm and Sunday 12noon to 2pm and 5pm to 7.30pm.

Bookings are advised, particularly for groups, telephone 01347 838 331. See also the Bluebell’s website for a delightful picture gallery of their exquisite inn, www.bluebellalne.co.uk www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 39

KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 23 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any

Gilbert and Sullivan’s

Iolanthe

18th to 20th September 2014 The Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company return to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, in September 2014, with their fullystaged production of Iolanthe. Written at the height of their creative powers, Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Fairy Opera’ is regarded by many as their best collaboration. Iolanthe sees the House of Lords and the political system come in for criticism, with the suggestion that the peerage should no longer be hereditary, but obtainable by ‘competitive examination’.

Performances at 7:30pm, plus Saturday Matinee at 2:30pm Adults £12; Concessions £10; Under 16s Free Tickets available from York Theatre Royal Box Office: 01904 623568 or online at: www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk www.jorvikgsc.org.uk

First performed in 1882, the topic is still very relevant today and shows how far (or not) we have come in 130 years! Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd and son of Iolanthe, wants to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery, but Phyllis’ guardian, the Lord Chancellor, and half the peers in the House of Lords are in love with her and are determined to prevent the marriage from taking place.

DJC Plumbing, Heating

Strephon, however, has a secret: he is half a fairy and the Fairy Queen is a powerful enemy. Soon the Peers and the Fairies are at war…

Summer Offers

Can the Fairies reform the peerage and fill it with ‘persons of intellect’? Will the peers preserve their ‘cherished rights’? And will Strephon and Phyllis be separated forever? Performances run from Thursday, 18 September 2014 to Saturday, 20 September 2014, starting at 7:30pm each evening, plus a Saturday Matinee at 2:30pm. Tickets are available from York Theatre Royal Box Office - 01904 623568 or online at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk – or by emailing: tickets@jorvikgsc.org.uk.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COOKING MOTORING Porsche Macan By James Baggott

P

orsche is set to bolster its position as market leader in the premium SUV sector with the launch of this, its new mid-sized Macan. An impressive range of engines, stylish exterior design and the German marque’s typically upmarket interiors all feature, but will this suave sports utility vehicle carve out a market for itself quite like the Cayenne? We find out...

said – on the Audi Q5 and is a new entrant into the hugely profitable and popular compact SUV sector. Judging by the larger Cayenne’s sales history, it will sell by the bucketload.

WHAT IS IT? Porsche will tell you that the new Macan is not a downsized, shrunken version of the Cayenne SUV. They’ll gladly regale you with tales that the Macan’s shape takes great inspiration from the 911 and the 918 hypercar. They’ll even let slip that during the Macan’s testing regime, the 911 was used as a benchmark for the results. The fact is, however, the new Macan is based – loosely, it must be

WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? There’s the option of a 335bhp 3.0-litre, twinturbocharged petrol or a 254bhp 3.0-litre twinturbo diesel. What with its 143mph top speed and combined fuel consumption of more than 44mpg, the latter is predicted to take 60 per cent of UK sales. The range is topped off with the 394bhp, 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged Turbo – it’s ludicrously fast, but doesn’t put the lower powered V6s to shame as they are equally punchy. >>

The Turbo at £59,300 adds 19-inch wheels with red brake calipers, sat nav, Bose sound system, leather upholstery with electric front seats and alcantara roof lining. There is of course a healthy options list for those with more to spend. All come with Porsche’s excellent seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? All that marketing hype about this being the first sports car compact SUV is true – it’s a fine-handling thing. The steering is as crisp as it probably could be and thanks to 90 per cent of the car’s power being pushed to fat tyres at the rear, it’s well-balanced, too. Even when Sport and Sport + modes are prodded, the ride is firm but never unbearable. The Turbo is deeply impressive and will reach 60mph in just 4.6 seconds. some controversy producing its first ever SUV. The Cayenne wasn’t what you’d call pretty but it successfully married true Porsche handling in a more user-friendly and everyday package. The new Macan takes that to even greater levels. With ample seating for five and loading space of 1,500 litres when the seats are folded, it’s a practical proposition. Its smaller dimensions make it far more agile on the road and it genuinely feels sporty to drive – think of an upscaled, four-wheel drive Boxster and you wouldn’t be too far wrong. It’s even rather good looking in our eyes. In our opinion, you’re looking at Stuttgart’s new UK bestseller.

MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG

Did you know that the law is changing? Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

“Microchipping provides the security of knowing that should your dog stray the chances of being reunited significantly increases”

B

y April 2016 it will be a legal obligation for ALL dogs to be microchipped.

Microchipping provides the security of knowing that should your dog stray the chances of being reunited significantly increases, whilst every dog owner is legally obliged to ensure that their dog is wearing a collar and tag, these can easily get lost or be removed. A microchip is permanent. A microchip is a small electronic device the size of a grain of rice which is coded with a unique number that can be read by a scanner. This unique number is entered and stored on the national database alongside the owners details. Using a specially designed implanting device, the microchip is injected through a sterile needle under the dogs skin between the shoulder blades. This procedure shouldn’t cause anymore discomfort than a standard vaccination. Veterinary practices, Local Authorities and some Animal Welfare groups have scanners, they will scan any dog found straying and if found to have a microchip will contact the national 24 hour database to find the owners details. The owner can then be contacted and reunited with their dog.

56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Remember Microchipping is a great way to identify your dog but you can only be reunited with a missing pet if your details are up to date. If you move house or change your telephone number please amend your details with the chip database as soon as possible. Here at Battle Flatts we have joined the Dog’s Trust’s Microchipping Campaign were you can have your dogs microchipped for free in view of the forthcoming legislation, this campaign is aiming to get as many dogs chipped as possible before the legislation comes into force. If you would like to have your dog microchipped please contact your local branch to make an appointment, alternatively come along to our Family Charity Fun Day! Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic are holding a Family Charity Fun Day at the surgery in Stamford Bridge on Saturday 13th September 1pm – 4pm, look around the surgery, bouncy castle, cream teas, tombola, local charities will have stalls, veterinary reps and more…. We will also be offering the chance to have your dog chipped. The free chipping is funded through the Dogs Trust charity so you may wish to make a donation. MR HUMBERFLOOB This month’s lost feline soul is the exotically named Mr Humberfloob. Mr H. was given this grand moniker by the 6 year old daughter of one of the staff here who was eager to give a cat this special name…after all, naming cats is one of the perks of the job! We don’t know a huge amount about Mr Humberfloob’s past as he was seemingly abandoned by his previous owner and later brought in by a concerned neighbour. When he first arrived he was very shy and preferred to hide away. Since then Mr H. has been involved in an ongoing action plan to help him learn to trust us humans and we are seeing gradual improvements in his confidence. The hiding has mostly stopped and he is finding it harder to resist that natural cat nosiness. He is very keen on his grub and this has helped us to bring him out of his shell.

Mr H. is only a couple of years old and he would be best suited to a quieter home where he can take things at a gentle pace. We are sure that any new owner will continue to see even greater strides in his progress and enjoy the strong bonds that cats like this often form with their new ‘people’. If you would like to help this lovely lad achieve his potential please call us. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am and 3pm. If you would like to adopt Mr H. or our other cats, please contact us on 01904 760356 or york@cats.org.uk. All of our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance.

PUPILS TAKE ACTION ON FOOD WASTE eaten. Their research also revealed the staggering fact that the benefit of reducing the food waste to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. Celia Wood, a member of the group said that “When throwing away some food, we often don’t think of the knock-on effects. The good news is that avoidable food waste has already been reduced by over 20%, but we want to help increase this”. From left to right: Celia Wood, Sanna Sy, Demi Lu, Rosemary Smart testing out the cauliflower crumb recipe.

A

t The Mount School, York, a group of sixth form students are raising awareness of the issue of food waste in the home. Their project is part of PeaceJam’s Global Call to Action which is an international movement of young people who have decided to work together to solve the most pressing issues of our time, by undertaking One Billion Acts of World Peace. The four sixth formers wanted their act of peace to address the issue of environmental sustainability. They realised that food waste in the home is in crisis when they discovered that 50% of the total amount of food thrown away from UK homes could have been

CRUNCHY CRUMBED CAULIFLOWER This recipe is an easy way to use up cauliflower and also to save money. Ingredients: • 25g/1oz vegan margarine • 55g/2oz fresh white breadcrumbs • 25g/1oz chopped toasted hazelnuts • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 medium cauliflower cut into small florets • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 tsp dried chilli flakes Method: 1. Melt the margarine in a frying pan. Add the breadcrumbs and nuts, and cook until the crumbs are golden and crunchy. Turn the mixture onto a plate to halt the cooking. 2. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper and then heat the oil. Fry the cauliflower for 5-8 minutes until it begins to brown, stir in the garlic and chilli flakes and stir well. 3. Put the cauliflower into a warmed dish and sprinkle with the crispy nuts and breadcrumbs. 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The foods that we waste the most are fresh vegetables, fruit and salad, drink, and bakery items. When a piece of fruit or a vegetable is thrown away, it is not only the food that is wasted, but also the energy and water which was used to produce, package, process, store and transport it. Throwing away a mango wastes the same amount of energy as leaving a non-low energy halogen light bulb on for 5 days, and for a mango to arrive in your fruit bowl, 320 litres of water are required - so that is wasted too. Demi Lu, another member of the group, said that “I had no idea of how huge these statistics would be: they are astounding. Undertaking this project has made me value and think more about the food we eat.”

was doing a call yesterday and listening to Radio 4 – as you do if the kids are not in the car! Some poor chap was undergoing an endoscopy of his gullet live on the radio.

A short video of them can be found on our facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/ stationhousevets If you have worries concerning your own horses do not hesitate to contact your vet. The procedure is simple and unlike the poor radio 4 presenter, horses have no gag reflex and are sedated prior to examination!

It quite put me off my pork scratchings..It is a procedure we carry out regularly on horses to examine the lining of their stomach as they can suffer terribly with a condition called gastric ulceration. The scoping is a necessary part of diagnosis as the signs can be difficult to spot. Some horses go off their feed, some resent being tacked up, or buck more. Some grind their teeth or become evil in temperament. All suffer as a result with poor performance. Stress is an important triggering factor. Travelling, competing and training are significant causes, but feeding patterns are often implicated. Once the ulcers have been cured with medicines, then increasing the horse’s grazing and roughage is really important. One delightful patient we scoped recently had obvious gastric ulcers and his treatment was hampered because he was not eating due to his stress levels. He had been a late developer, was not broken in until he was six years old and had run as part of a

GARDENING

GROW YOUR OWN TAKE-AWAY

www.pippagreenwood.com

by Pippa Greenwood

No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go!

We all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden?

Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour

YORK • AUGUST 2014 • ISSUE 104 to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stirfries and a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which has a superbly crunchy bright red-to-pink inner flesh and spherical white roots. Sow in open ground or pots until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time.

Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.

Summer in the Wildlife Garden sunflower hearts are welcome, as are suet-based foods for energy. If you have peanuts, ensure you feed them from a peanut feeder and not directly from the table as they are too big to swallow whole. During dry spells, remember to keep the bird bath topped up with clean water. You might also catch a glimpse of birds having a dust-bath – this helps rid the birds of mites and other parasites.

R

egardless of whether you have a garden of many acres or just a window box, you have the potential to create a wildlife habitat for your own enjoyment and for the benefit of native wildlife. At this time of year, nothing can be nicer than relaxing beside a summer meadow – a kaleidoscope of colour that’s buzzing with life. By reducing the mowing regime for a small area of lawn, you can create your own “Pocket Meadow” - You may be lucky enough to have some native species already present in the lawn and ready to burst forth, then other meadow flowers such as ox-eye daisy, field scabious, yellow rattle and lady’s bedstraw may be grown or purchased as plug plants to supplement the colourful show. Late summer butterflies including Red admiral, Painted lady, Peacock and Gatekeeper will feast on the nectar, joined by bumble bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects. The increase in the number of insects encourages other wildlife to the free feast – bats can be seen in the summer evenings circling around gardens using their sonar to avoid obstacles snatching any unsuspecting moths and flies that stray up into their path. Acrobatic birds also catch insects either on the wing or in the hedgerow to feed their fledged families – young birds are very vulnerable at this time of year, relying on their parents to show them how to find food and look out for danger. It is encouraged to carry on feeding the birds throughout the summer – good seed mixes and

HOME SECURITY

I

t is never a bad time to consider your home and the security that you have in place to keep it and your possessions safe. It is particularly relevant during the Summer months for a number of reasons. As the weather gets better we often spend more time in the gardens of our properties, and on occasion people will leave their garage open after collecting what they need or leave their front door unlocked as they are just going to be outside for a short time. Many burglaries and thefts are opportunistic and there have been examples in the last month within the City of York where offenders have sneaked into homes and stolen items whilst the occupants have been outside in the garden for a short time. The advice is simple, it takes virtually no time to close and lock doors after you use them and the simple act of locking the door will prevent just such a sneak in burglary. These offences take only a few minutes to commit and often occur during daylight hours. In more general terms we often go away during the Summer months and it is important to keep your home as secure as possible. The most obvious way to do this is to install an alarm and to use it when you are not in your property. A functioning burglar alarm will deter many potential criminals but only if the alarm is turned on! It is amazing how many people have an alarm fitted but don’t use it as they are only leaving the house for a short time. Good window locks are also a good way to deter thieves. Most of these offences will be opportunistic and they will be looking to attack the easiest properties that they can. Sadly these criminals know all to well that it is likely that there will be an insecure property somewhere nearby. Once inside your home you should try and avoid leaving valuable items on display. A mobile phone or lap top next to an open window is an invitation to a thief and again there have been offences just as this within York where somebody simply puts their arm through a window and removes items. If the thief can’t see it then they won’t take it. Think about where you place items within the home aswell. Do not leave keys in the locks of doors as it can sometimes be possible for people

64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

to get an implement through the letterbox, hook the keys and remove them allowing them to open the door. It is mainly common sense and about not making it easy for the criminals. Most of the things that you can do to help make your home secure are cheap or free and take virtually no time at all to do. If you have any questions contact your local Police Team on the 101 number. Carcassonne Dream Citadel

T

his year marks the 200th anniversary of Viollet-le-Duc, a brilliant architect born in Paris who devoted his life to restoring churches and castles across the country. Most celebrated of all is the medieval citadel of Carcassonne rebuilt, with a few flights of fancy, from ruins and rubble. Today, on a hilltop framed by vineyards in south west France, Carcassonne rises like a dream above the river Aude, a fairy tale citadel which simply takes your breath away. Once a strategic crossroad on the plain of Languedoc, the citadel played a major role in a long and often troubled history but fell into disrepair when in 1659 the Treaty of the Pyrenees pushed the Spanish border 200km to the south. Saved in the 19th century by a local scholar who enlisted the help of Viollet-le-Duc, Carcassonne was for 35 years the largest construction site in Europe, turning a ‘heap of funeral ashes’ into an ‘iconic landmark in the national landscape’. Now on the

66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

World Heritage list, it is the third most visited site in France. Some might say that Carcassonne is too good to be true, a frozen image of the Middle-Ages draped in flamboyant romanticism but the restoration altered only 10% of the site and no one can deny that seen from the Old Bridge, the largest walled town in Europe is simply magical. With its mighty gates sending shivers down your spine, moats, drawbridge and double line of ramparts bristling with 52 towers, dungeons and machicoulis, it showcases the golden age of 13th century military architecture, recreated with a little imagination. At the windswept Narbonne gate, beribboned horsedrawn carriages are ready to take visitors along the lists while a maze of winding streets beckons beyond the drawbridge. In summer, crowds make their way along the cobbled lanes where shops sell toy swords and other souvenirs alongside local specialities and Occitan craft. There are

restaurants and wine cellars and right at the top, the Count’s castle. With its walls enhanced by nine towers, including the highest in the Cité, this is a fortress within a fortress and includes a permanent exhibition about the restoration. A few steps away, the basilica was the first building tackled by Viollet-le-Duc who managed to preserve some elements of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The old cloister is now an outdoor theatre where cultural events are held, as well as knights tournaments and jousting contests during the summer Medieval Fair. In the sun or in the shade, it’s good to stroll along the medieval streets where the last inhabitants live behind half-closed shutters. But the highlight of the Cité is walking around the lists where 3kms of ramparts let you enjoy a 360° panorama. To the north is the Black Mountains, the last foothills of the Massif Central, and to the south, in clear weather, the snowy summits of the Pyrenees. The ‘new town’ is at your feet, a checkerboard of narrow streets, punctuated with towers and spires between the Canal du Midi and the river Aude. That’s where you want to be on the evening of July 14th, on the river bank facing the citadel. Every year, on Bastille Day, a massive explosion of fireworks seemingly sets the fortress ablaze, culminating in a grand finale with over 1000 shots, a most befitting homage to Violletle-Duc.
