W
elcome to our August/September edition.
Each year we publish 11 editions of the Handy Mag, with our Aug/Sept edition covering two months. Print deadlines are relentless for the rest of the year so it’s lovely to skip a month, breathe and take on some of those other tasks that we keep on postponing. Both Nicky and I are looking forward to ‘dipping out’ and heading off with our families, hoping to find some sun and recharge for the October issue and the run up to Christmas! At the Handy Mag it has been a busy first half of 2017 and we are hoping to find someone to help us in the office from September onwards. If you’d like to join our friendly office in the centre of Malton, we’d love to hear from you. Please have a look at our advert on page 63. For the past six years August has been an exciting, if stressful, time in our house with either GCSE or A Level results being revealed. This year marks a watershed as our youngest waits on his A levels, and school is no more. Good luck if this is you this summer! As usual there are lots of events to enjoy over the remaining summer months. Malton Festival of Racing returns on the 17th September, providing a great opportunity to see behind the scenes of the racing industry with a number of local stables opening their doors. If you live in or around Huntington there’s a great day and evening of events on 13th August for the annual Huntington Gala. Strensall, Sheriff Hutton, Claxton and Dunnington all have village shows coming up showcasing the best produce each village has to offer. Well done to Angela Creasey from Haxby for winning our June competition.

Marie Curie's York West Fundraising Group seeks new members
M
arie Curie is looking to recruit new volunteers to join the York West Fundraising Group in a bid to support the team. The group will be covering postcodes YO23, YO24, YO26 & YO30, to raise money for Marie Curie and become the local faces of the Charity. Fundraising Groups play an important role by taking part in Marie Curie’s national fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party. They also organise fundraising events and activities within the area and act as an ambassador, helping to spread the word about what Marie Curie does and encouraging and supporting local people, clubs and organisations to fundraise too.
Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser, explained: “You may be good on a computer and well-organised, you might like counting and banking money, or you might just be really great at chatting to people. Whatever your skills, as long as you can work as part of a team and are passionate about raising money I’d love to hear from you! Volunteers are a fantastic asset to Marie Curie and without them we wouldn’t be able to continue providing care and support to people with a terminal illness, and their loved ones, in the local community. Supporting us gives people the opportunity to gain unforgettable experiences, face fresh challenges and obtain new skills while doing something amazing. So if you’re interested in joining us then please get in touch!” If you would like further information about volunteering or fundraising opportunities then please contact Jennifer Carmichael on 01904 755260, email jennifer.carmichael@ mariecurie.org.uk or visit www.mariecurie. org.uk.

Malton Festival of Racing An exciting day out for horseracing fans of all ages.
with a proportion of the funds raised also going to local causes. Racing Welfare has a significant presence in Malton, providing wide-ranging support to all of those in the area who work in, or are retired from racing. The charity’s regional office at 4, Old Maltongate provides a base for two Welfare Officers as well as safe, secure accommodation for six young people starting out on their careers. Retired racing staff in the Malton area are also well catered-for with monthly coffee mornings, trips and outings and the Sporting Memories reminiscence project all helping to prevent loneliness and social isolation amongst the community.
T

Operation Spartan
Shielding vulnerable road users
N
PCSO Andy Smith 5520
orth Yorkshire Police have launched an operation which seeks to identify vulnerable road users. Through a mixture of education and enforcement, Op Spartan aims to improve the attitudes of those who use our roads and increase the level of safety for all. ‘Vulnerable’ road users are classed as those who may be disproportionately involved in collisions for example bikers, occupational road users and young drivers, as well as anyone who poses a risk to themselves or others by their behaviour on the roads. Spartan is a force-wide operation where officers and the public are encouraged to submit intelligence regarding instances of anti-social use of vehicles or poor driving. A profile of information will be collated for the police to assess and act upon, to ensure guidance and advice can be provided to those who need it. Op Spartan is inviting the public to submit details of instances of dangerous or anti-social driving they have witnessed via the driving concern form. This form captures the details of the incident and requests information such as vehicle number plate, so police can carry out the relevant checks and follow up with engagement or enforcement if required. Speaking about the operation and driving concern form, Insp Dave Barf of the Roads Policing Group said “We are appealing to members of the public to come forward and share the instances of poor driving and anti-social behaviour that they have witnessed, to assist us in taking the necessary steps to increase the safety of North Yorkshire’s roads.” “With liveried police vehicles being highly identifiable on the road, the opportunities for traffic officers to witness poor driving are somewhat reduced. However, I know that members of the public very often witness or experience behaviour such as tailgating, inappropriate speed, aggressive driving and mobile phone use. If anyone witnesses any kind of driving behaviour which raises their concern, I would ask them to report it to us via the online driving concern form. I would of course ask them to do so when it is safe, appropriate and convenient and not from behind the wheel.” “The Major Collision Investigation Team will collate the information and then take the appropriate course
of action. This may be the registered owner of the vehicle is contacted by letter to suggest that their driving behaviour be amended to avert possible future collisions. More serious reports may involve a personal visit by a traffic officer and could ultimately result in prosecution. If the anti-social driving behaviour results in an emergency or immediate risk, please use either 999 or 101. The aim of North Yorkshire Police through Op Spartan is to make the roads of North Yorkshire safer and lower the instances of serious collisions and road deaths by identifying and educating those who are seen as being at risk of causing themselves or others harm.” Op Spartan updates will be published via the force website and Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/NorthYorkshirePolice/ You can also follow the operation on Twitter @NYPOpSpartan

Virtual Revolution By Mary Mahon
E
very day now it seems there are new technological advancements, so it’s no surprise why many people seem to spend half their lives in a virtual world. Bus journeys, lunch breaks, out in the park… if you look around, you can see our zombie-esque era transfixed to their phone screen! Yet on the horizon looms a new type of technology, one that doesn’t involve simply staring at a screen… In bursts virtual reality! All manners of crazy things are possible, from birdlike flight, to slaying the undead, to even visiting an estate agency without having to step a foot outside! However, it’s not just our mind but our entire body being immersed virtually. Many apps allow us to create ‘avatars’ of ourselves, even letting us track exactly where our friends are on a real-life map. Companies all around the world are racing ahead to invent the next big thing; progressing from sight and sound, to smell, touch and taste, the aim is to truly trick our senses. Yet whilst virtual reality is undeniably exciting, it also can ignite a whole spectrum of different opinions on what is ‘too far’… If we can achieve amazing things without having to venture outside, will humanity introvert itself, and real life experiences become unpopular as we all succumb to a Matrix-style world? Could we inflict psychological damage if our brain is tricked into believing we truly are being hunted by zombies? And are virtual mapping systems incredibly dangerous? Unbeknown to most, virtual reality has the opportunity to help many; mapping systems can teach wheelchair users and autistic people to navigate and cope with busy public places, traumatic experiences can be recreated with doctors to help cure PTSD, and allegedly even soothe the experience of childbirth by projecting a relaxing setting through a pair of VR goggles. Regardless of whether we like it or not, our future seems to be heading towards a virtual revolution, and I believe the creativity should be embraced - provided we still distinguish our real world from the virtual, and continue to revel in the wonders it provides too.

Books Lazy Days
Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion. PALACE OF CURIOSITIES - ROSIE GARLAND Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention.
RESERVOIR 13 - JON MCGREGOR A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village. Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in.
100% REAL - SAM TALBOT If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again.
ONCE IN A BLUE MOON LODGE - LORNA LANDVIK A warm, comfortable kind of story with great characters, first loves, old flames and family dynamics. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge follows a family over two decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a standalone novel. There is a large cast of characters,
and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read.
THE TROUBLE WITH GOATS AND SHEEP JOANNA CANNON It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.

Convert your new or existing conservatory into a usable all year round sun room. The increased incidence of storms over the last few years has clearly highlighted the unreliability of mortar to secure tiles. Switch from unreliable mortar to more secure dry ridge tiles. Paddleboarding in a Picanto
T
o prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard.
It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers. Kia invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. The two giant paddleboards, overnight bags for two and accessories are easily swallowed in the boot, with space left over. There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. Even the lowest output unit gets the city car to 60mph in 13.8 seconds and gives a top speed of 100mph, while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track. After an hour’s paddleboarding, there’s time to play with the kit while drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s
air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel; that’s on top of the standard options, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking. Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life.

We ask that you bring spare seedlings, when a seed tray produced more plants than there is room for in your garden, and to bring excess produce, such as lettuces, tomatoes, potatoes, apples or blackcurrants. Come and experience what it is like when there is no money involved; just take what you can use and what someone else has too much of. Short Story Aunty Josephine's Kiosk
The early morning sun glittered on the waves. Neville paced in front of Aunty Josephine’s Kiosk and checked the time. Apart from a chap walking his spaniel on the beach and a solitary teenager playing on roller skates down the promenade in the far distance, there was not a soul about. No sign yet of Josephine. Yesterday he’d overheard two locals talking in the pub about how Josephine now used wheels to get about. He saw his opportunity. He’d make her an offer for the kiosk; less than it was worth, but if she was getting frail she would be easy to negotiate with. Personally, he found the seaside dull, but there was money to be made from a beach full of holidaymakers. He watched the spaniel run after its ball into the surf, then glanced again along the promenade. It was still deserted apart from the teenager, who he could now see was a girl in a lime green helmet weaving perilously in and out of the bollards. He wished he had that much energy. To his relief, he heard the unmistakeable hum of a mobility scooter struggling up the ramp from the arcades. He buttoned his jacket and, preparing the concerned smile that he’d been practising since yesterday, he turned graciously to greet Josephine. To his disappointment the rider of the mobility scooter was just a gentleman in a turquoise bomber jacket. He nodded to Neville as he rolled past. “Excuse me!” Neville called. “I don’t suppose you know when Aunty Josephine arrives to open up?” The gentleman applied his brakes and turned to face Neville. “Any time now.” He glanced at his watch. “Though to be fair, she’s been arriving a little late these days.”
From Easter until October she would hang out rows of colourful buckets, spades and windmills. In his youth, Neville had seen her vault over the counter to rescue a lilo from being snatched by the wind. She could blow up a beach ball in three puffs. Back then, Neville recalled, Josephine had been a force to be reckoned with. Once the deal was done, he’d get rid of all the buckets and nonsense. He couldn’t imagine anyone built sandcastles anymore. He’d sell expensive cappuccinos instead, that’s what people liked these days. “Any idea when she’ll get here?” Neville asked. “I’ve got an appointment to discuss kiosk business with her.” “You’re brave.” The gentleman chuckled knowingly. “The last chap who tried that had to dig his own grave.” “Obviously, her situation’s now changed,” Neville said dismissively. “Do you actually know when she’ll get here?” “I’ve not got the best eyesight.” The man squinted along the promenade. “But isn’t this her coming towards us now?” Neville followed the man’s gaze, but the promenade was still deserted apart from the girl. “That’s just a teenager on roller skates,” Neville said. “Is she wearing a green helmet?” the man asked. “Yes,” Neville answered.
Neville nodded sympathetically. He was a canny enough businessman to appreciate that everyone who knew Josephine would be sad to see her in decline.
“Is she doing stunts with the bollards like Evel Knievel?” the man asked.
Technically speaking Josephine was nobody’s aunty, yet she was as much a part of the fabric of this seaside town as the smell of fish and chips. She’d been the proprietor of the promenade kiosk for donkey’s years.
“That’ll be her then. Good luck with your meeting!” He rode off on his scooter with a pip of his horn. “I’m sure she’ll be happy to sell you a spade.”
Neville nodded, his mouth agape.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Shwedagon Pagoda - Myanmar gold with Buddhist symbols and an umbrella crown encrusted with 4,531 diamonds, the largest a 76 carat solitaire. It defies imagination, and barefoot pilgrims and visitors must pause to catch their breath before proceeding clockwise around the stupa. Buddhist robes flutter all around, pink, brown, red or gold, and there is much bell ringing and chanting, prostrations, prayers, flickering lights and jasmine garlands leaving their scent in the air.
I
n Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, a golden pagoda rises on Singuttara Hill, dominating the skyline as it has done, according to legend, for over 2,000 years. Far humbler in its early days, it is now over 100 metres high and is entirely covered in gold plates. Erected to house eight miraculous strands of the Buddha’s hair, rebuilt and extended over time, it is the most sacred monument in the country. Pilgrims add offerings of gold leaf every day, hoping to earn merits, though none could ever emulate Queen Shin Saw Pu who donated her weight in gold in the 15th century. At the foot of the steps leading up to the platform, lion-like mythological creatures guard each of the four entrances where stalls brim with multicoloured prayer flags, incense sticks, flowers, candles and more. The pagoda remains out of sight but when you emerge at the top, diamonds and gold hit you like lightning, a dazzling land of spires and shrines, stepped roofs and celestial beings gathered all around the central monument. The base is made of bricks covered in gold plates, the first terrace is reserved for monks and men, then comes the massive bell-shaped section containing the relics and finally the spire silhouetted against the blue sky, boasting an amazing three tonnes of
The stupa is a closed structure but it can take an hour or two to stop at every pavilion and shrine. Among the most popular shrines are those dedicated to the eight days of the week (Wednesday is divided in two for astrological reasons), each one linked to a planet and a symbolic animal, giant bird, elephant, tiger and more. Many devotees make a wish at their birthday shrine, pouring water as a symbol of life and offering small umbrellas to keep away bad luck. Couples pray at the child-granting shrine, others meditate in the Footprints Pavilion or gaze at the well where the Buddha’s hair was cleaned before it was enshrined. Meanwhile, tourists look up in awe at the 40 tonne bronze bell donated by King Thayarwaddy. Every morning at dawn, a monks’ procession makes it way to the pagoda to lay fresh offerings of flowers and food and wash the statues with sandalwoodscented water. Special celebrations are held at the time of the full moon, the Buddha’s birthday and the autumn Festival of Lights when over 9,000 candles are lit after dark. It is sheer magic and one almost forgets that in modern times the pagoda has witnessed its share of political rallies and turmoil. Today, as Myanmar’s fledgling democracy finds its feet, it is once again a purely religious site. When the authorities moved the capital to Nappyidaw in 2005, 320km to the north, they graced their brand new city with a replica of Shwedagon. But some say it is 30 cm lower than the original and could never replace the Great Yangon Pagoda, ‘glistening with its gold like a sudden hope in the dark night of the soul.’ (Somerset Maugham) By Solange Hando

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Gardening
It's Not Always Good To Be Green Blanket weed is long filaments of tangled algae, making a mass resembling a dense green blanket. Remove by pulling, raking or by using a stick or bamboo cane that you twirl into the algae, then compost it down in your compost bin.
W
ater features are great in a garden but the chances are that from time to time you will have been frustrated by the water turning green. Generally, this will be due to one of many different types of algae infestation, and will get worse during warmer weather, but what should you do about it?
Surface floating pond weeds such as duckweed, which looks like lots of very tiny oval leaves floating on the water’s surface, can be a real nightmare too. It builds up very rapidly as a bright green surface layer and the best control is to regularly scrape the weed off using a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again it can be composted, but make sure you remove all of it or it will soon be back. Try to avoid the build-up of algae by creating your pond carefully and taking precautions with what you grow and keep in it. Avoid a very sunny position, as lots of sunlight increases the algal growth. Bear in mind, however, that a pond close

to trees will become clogged by leaves in autumn! Make sure that the pond is as deep as possible, as algal growth is much more likely in shallow water, and avoid putting in too many fish as their excreta raises the water’s nitrogen level, which encourages algae. Surface floating plants, particularly water lilies, will help to shade the water’s surface - ideal if the pond is in a fairly sunny site. You should also include a selection of oxygenating plants, available from your local garden centre or pond plant supplier. Some of these float in bundles in the water, others can be grown in containers, and all of them help raise the oxygen level in the pond and so decrease the algae problem. A spout or fountain will also oxygenate the water, but note that water lilies do not like water that is in motion. Note that if you keep changing the water in an attempt to keep it clear, the pond never gets the chances to create its own natural balance and the situation will not improve. Be patient and usually, provided you try all the above, the pond will eventually sort itself out and clear water will return.
You can use proprietary physical and chemical controls for algae, but make sure that whatever you choose is suitable and can be used safely around wildlife and your pond fish. Using barley straw to clear algae in ponds does work, but it is essential that the straw is from barley and no other cereal crop. If you can get hold of this, cram some into an old pair of tights and submerge in the water by weighing them down with several bricks. Alternatively, buy pads of barley straw (sometimes mixed with lavender stalks), and these will help do the job for you. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown garden-ready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Things Are Hotting Up by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic Bee and wasp:

S
ummer is here! But when the heat turns up, the dangers to pets increase too.
To keep your dog, cat and other furry friends safe, make sure you are prepared. To help you we’ve put together some top summer survival tips: Summer walks: When walking your dogs, do try to avoid the hottest times of the day. Heat stroke is a real risk for many breeds but particularly those with shorter noses or who are overweight. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the great weather so just make use of the light evenings and go out when it is cooler.
UV Alert!:
Just like us, sunburn can cause problems for our pets. Cats are natural sun bathers, but cats with white noses and ear tips are particularly vulnerable to sun burn and subsequent skin cancer. This risk can be reduced by keeping them out of the sun, or by applying sunblock to these areas during the summer months.

Guinea pigs and rabbits need an area of shade so that they do not overheat – guinea pigs particularly are unable to regulate their body temperature and both they and rabbits are vulnerable to sunburn.
Flystrike:
is a very serious problem at this time of year. Rabbits’ rear ends often become damp and this moist area attracts flies, which lay their eggs there. These eggs hatch out into maggots which can cause life threatening infections. Rabbits’ rear ends should be inspected daily for fly eggs and maggots, and soiled bedding should be cleaned out daily. Call us immediately if you are worried.
It is really the structure of the grass awn that makes them potentially hazardous for our pets. The rough, bristly texture allows them to attach easily to a dog’s hair. Once attached, the sharp point at the end helps them to penetrate the skin and the arrow-like arrangement of the barbs promotes forward movement and migration inside the body. Grass seeds can also find their way into a dog’s ear canals or under their eyelids and they may even be inhaled, lodging in the nose or lungs. And finally – NEVER leave pets in cars. Even on dull days, they can heat up and become ovens. Unlike us, dogs cannot sweat, so they must lose body heat by panting, which uses up a lot of water and can lead to rapid dehydration.
Can you give Rosa a new home? Cheeky young lass Rosa was brought to us after her previous owner developed allergies. She is an inquisitive and happy cat and eager to get to know you. She was kept indoors in her last home but we think she would much prefer a home where she can go outside, run around and feel the breeze blowing through her whiskers! Rosa has boundless energy and is getting quite frustrated being in a cat pen. We hope we can find her a new home soon so she can enjoy the rest of the summer living the cat high life! If you would like to consider adopting this friendly and playful cat then please call the Centre on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york.cats.org.uk for further details.

Duncan came to us after being found living on the streets, life for a street cat can be tough, so now Duncan is looking for a home of his very own. He’s a cheeky lad who loves to have a play and then snooze his days away in the sunshine. Duncan would be suitable to live with children of secondary school age, Year 9 and over.
Hazel is a sweet natured girl although slightly shy to begin with, we believe she would prefer a nice quiet home where she is the only cat, and any children in the household should be of secondary school age or over.
Hazel came to the centre via our local vet after being found as a stray - sadly an owner never came forward, so she is now ready to find herself a new loving home.
There will be cakes, teas & coffees, plus lots of stalls and a fun dog show.
Come to our Summer Fair! We will be holding our annual Summer Fair at the animal home on Landing Lane York on Sunday 20th August from 11am to 3pm.
Entry is £2 for adults, children free and all proceeds go to support your local RSPCA.

Introducing a new pet
A
By Lucy Nowell BAVetMB MRCVS, Station House Vets
new pet can cause significant disruption and upset to the existing animal which can lead to long term problems, particularly in the case of cats. A little bit of planning and management can make the difference between good or bad future relationships. Plan ahead! It may be easier to introduce a dog to a resident cat as it won’t be viewed as competition for resources. Alternatively consider introducing a kitten as this may be less threatening than an adult cat. A dog that is familiar with cats or a puppy might be considered, as is breed of dog – those bred to chase small furry things might be less preferable. The first meeting! Arrange to pick up the new pet when you have plenty of time. Restrict the new pet to an area, so the existing pet can get away easily. Consider using a crate in a quiet room for a new cat and start swapping the bedding between cats prior to meeting so they get used to each other’s smells. A crate positioned out of a main thoroughfare or limiting the areas of access in the house will allow your pet to follow his usual routines and escape easily. At the first meeting, distract the new cat with food and maintain normal routine and attention toward the existing cat. When both cats are relaxed consider moving the pen to other areas of the house and rubbing a face cloth wiped over the face and body of the cat onto prominent objects to intermingle the cats smells. Supervise the puppy/dog and allow the cat to approach, if willing, when they are first introduced. Reward the puppy for calm behaviour towards the cat and maintain supervision until both parties are relaxed.

Pheromones can help with the introduction of any new pet. Feliway ® and Adaptil ® are products that come as both environmental sprays (not for use directly on the pet) and diffusers, have calming properties and are available at our clinic. If you are introducing new cats make sure there are sufficient resources – litter trays, food and water bowls, resting and hiding places for each cat. Remember to register your new pet at the clinic and enquire about vaccination, health checks and parasite products according to your pets needs. Have fun!

'Wheely' Excited About Scooter Heaven Raising Money For Babies And The Fight Against Dementia!
Y
ork funeral director Hayley Owen and her partner Dave love riding their classic Lambretta scooters and attend events around the country when they can. But they’re going one step further with a John O’Groats to Lands End trip next year when they’ll be travelling the 800 miles to raise money for two special charities that are close to their hearts. With Dave on a 1960 machine and Hayley on her 1975 one, the May 2018 jaunt will be for SANDS (the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) and the Alzheimer’s Society. Hayley, 29, said she and Dave are looking for businesses to sponsor them. “Any firm that does so will get a sticker on our scooters, which means the potential to be seen and discussed the whole length of Britain, from York to Scotland and all the way down to Cornwall and back,” she said. According to SANDS, 15 babies die before, during or shortly after birth every day in the UK. Hayley
became involved with the York branch of the charity after organising a funeral for York baby Alexis, who was just 16 days old when she died a few days after Christmas 2015. Recently Hayley was given a portable cuddle cot (a cooling device used for deceased babies, so their bereaved parents can spend more time with them). She lends it to other funeral directors in exchange for a donation to SANDS. Hayley is also organising a coffee morning for the two charities in September; she has held several of these before and raised hundreds of pounds. If you’d like to sponsor Hayley and Dave’s scooter ride and have a sticker on their scooters, please contact Hayley on 07821 155985.
