elcome to our August/September edition.
As usual at this time of year, this is a double issue so you won’t be hearing from us again until our October edition at the end of September. Whilst we do enjoy publishing the magazines, it’s a stressful business and lovely to take a break for a few weeks to catch up, tidy up and plan for the next year. We’ll all be taking some time out with our families, me in the usual tent in a field away from the internet, the rest probably somewhere more luxurious. I don’t think camping is Nicky and Mandy’s thing! The midges, cold showers, scrambling around on the floor in the mud and camp beds…ah summer! There are lots of summer events to enjoy if you’re staying at home and have bored children to entertain. For some fantastic local summer fun, why not try Castle Howard or Dalby Forest? Have a peruse through our monthly event listings for something for everyone. The annual Huntington Gala is on 5th August (page 19), and, for exSTRAWdinary fun, visit the Poppleton Scarecrow Festival on 22nd and 23rd September. Produce and craft will be the order of the day at Strensall Show (see page 34) and Dunnington Village Show (see page 24), and there’s art in Poppleton Tithe Barn (see page 36). When this edition has gone off to the printers, we’ll be looking forward to October onwards so please keep us informed of anything you’d like to publicise for the autumn and winter. Our next deadline will be Tuesday 4th September for both businesses and community information.

Patronal Festival at St Mary's Church in Haxby Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 August
During the weekend, the church will be decorated with beautiful flowers and will be displaying art, photography and crafts which will be open to anyone from Haxby who wishes to show their work (please get in touch if you want to be part of this).
There has been a church dedicated to St Mary in Haxby since the Middle Ages, and in recent years, St Mary’s has held a special Festival to celebrate. This year the Festival will take place on 18 and 19 August with sessions on Saturday morning (10.30 pm to 12.30am), Saturday afternoon (2 pm to 4.15pm) and Sunday afternoon (3 pm to 4.15pm), culminating in Songs of Praise at 4.30pm to which everyone is welcome.
Refreshments will be served on the lawn on both days with savoury items as well as cake available. There will be a mini-market on Saturday morning with stalls selling a variety of items and raising funds for St Mary’s. Children’s activities will be available at all the sessions, and there will be music, poetry and readings taking place, inside and outside the church. Again, anyone who wants to take part is very welcome - if you would like to, bring an instrument and play some music or come and read a poem. Of course, you could just come to listen and appreciate the talent of others. This is not just a church event - the whole community is invited to celebrate the parish church in Haxby. If you want any more information, please contact Ian Strong on 01904 769771 or email ianstrong@hotmail.co.uk

News from Haxby Memorial Hall home life to dedicate their free time to maintaining the building, setting up the admin side to ensure better working practices, fundraising into the early hours and being a sounding board for those who needed it. They have had the will to overcome every problem with laughter, drive and dedication whilst always looking at the bigger picture of what the Hall could be, and indeed, is now. May 2018 marked the end of an era for Haxby Memorial Hall, as Chris and Denise Moss stepped down from their roles as Trustees. They have done an outstanding job over the years, dedicating their time, working alongside their fellow Trustees, to make the Hall what it is today; a wonderful and well used venue with a future! Chris and Denise have given their hearts to this wonderful building over the years, even putting off
They’ve been a huge asset to the Hall and to everyone involved; making and building partnerships along the way to improve the future of the Hall. Their energy and devotion to their roles will be hard to find again. It is with great pleasure that the Trustees of the Hall, employees and members of the community thank you, Denise and Chris for your dedication and would like to express our sincere good wishes for your future endeavours and look forward to your ongoing involvement and interest in the Memorial Hall.

Books
Inspire Your Wanderlust Thinking about booking a lastminute holiday? These books should help to inspire your wanderlust. (Or just transport you to distant climes while you’re lounging in your garden.) THE ROAD TO LITTLE DRIBBLING BILL BRYSON
In The Road to Little Dribbling, Bill Bryson sets out to explore Britain once again – 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island. Not only is it highly entertaining, but The Road to Little Dribbling is packed full of facts and wry observations. You’ll veer from rolling your eyes at Bryson’s ‘grumpyold-man-ishness’ to vigorously nodding your head, to snorting with laughter, to booking a train ticket to explore a corner of this island you haven’t yet stumbled upon.
THE BEAN TREES - BARBARA KINGSOLVER
Determined to avoid ending up like her Kentucky classmates – pregnant and married before she’s 18, Taylor buys a beaten up old car and a tank of petrol, and heads west. By the time her car breaks down in Arizona, she has a three-year-old Cherokee girl in tow. First published 30 years ago, The Bean Trees beautifully evokes the landscape and spirit of 1980s Southwestern America.
ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG NATURALIST SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH
In 1954, David Attenborough began his exploration of the world, seeking out rare animals for London Zoo and sharing his experiences with a captive TV audience back at home. Adventures of a Young Naturalist charts his adventures across Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay, from coming face-toface with Komodo dragons and giant armadillos to befriending a young male orangutan. Numerous photographs help to bring the tales to life.
THE EARTH FROM THE AIR - YANN ARTHUSBERTRAND It’s been almost 20 years since Yann Arthus-
Bertrand first set out to capture aerial photography of some of the most remote places on Earth. The result – The Earth From the Air – went on to sell more than 3 million copies. A new edition was released last year, which includes 100 stunning new photographs and commentary from the likes of Jane Goodall and Matthieu Ricard. Breathtaking.
THE ART OF TRAVEL - ALAIN DE BOTTON
Alain de Botton explores the reasons why we travel and discusses how we can make the most of our experiences. He covers everything from holiday romances to hotel mini-bars. It’s a book about taking pleasure in our surroundings (however mundane) and taking the time to look, really look, at the world around us.
WANDERLUST: A BOOK CLUB SAMPLER FROM SIMON & SCHUSTER
This travel-inspired sampler is only available as a free Kindle ebook. It includes excerpts from several novels, including An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais. Also included are the authors’ favourite travel-related memories and notes and tips for book clubs. Perfect for dipping into on a summer’s evening, Wanderlust may help you to find your next book and your next holiday destination.

Last year, their second Scarecrow Trail brought 25 ‘sensational, superb and scatterbrained scarecrows’ out onto the streets to entertain – each one carefully crafted by local residents who join in the fun to help raise funds for the local community centre, The Poppleton Centre, which organises the event. The Trail itself will meander around the villages, taking in most of the older parts from the Maypole on the village green, along the banks of the River Ouse and providing an opportunity to have a good look around these historic villages. If you walk the whole trail it’s about three miles long, but there are always plenty of places to stop for a pint or a cuppa, so there’s no need to rush. Pick up a map and Question Sheet for £2 at The Poppleton Centre (which, if you’re coming by car now rather neatly offers a specific postcode for your SatNav - YO26 6JU - to stop people inadvertently driving up a narrow lane with no space to turn round!), where Café Refresh will offer you morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Also at The Centre a bouncy castle will provide kids with a chance to let off steam before and after the Trail. Answer the questions correctly and you could win tickets for Poppleton’s following big event, the Bonfire and Firework Spectacular on 5th November – another Poppleton event not to be missed. Last year’s Best Scarecrow winner, The Fantastic Mr. Fox along with attendant chickens, perched on a fence down one of the lanes on the edge of the village, while an ever vigilant ‘scarecop’ pointed his ‘radar gun’ at bewildered drivers coming into the village. Whatever happens this year, it’ll be fun. The Scarecrows will be ready to welcome you between 10am and 4pm on both days, so go along and enjoy an entertaining wander around the Poppletons – you might be in for a few surprises.

York's independent community cinema returns, with the help of local groups. Film at the Folk Hall in New Earswick is returning, bigger and better than ever with the backing of the local community. City of York Council, New Earswick Parish Council, Onestop Shop and New Earswick Residents Forum all chip in to help volunteers bring top class films to their community at an affordable price. While the New Earswick Folk Hall has been going through it’s incredible regeneration, their monthly cinema club has been doing the same. Chairman, Sam Watling says, “We have been going just over three years now and we thought that short break during the transformation of the Folk Hall was a good time to make some changes. We are chuffed that so many local organisations can see the value we bring and support us in our work. As well as a rebrand, new design and an improved website we are also updating our equipment. This means that we will be able to bring our guests an even more professional cinematic experience. The only difference is, we focus our attentions on the people, not the profit. With special themed events, guest speakers and
membership benefits we aim to be much more than just a cinema. We have a huge 16 foot screen, tables with comfy new chairs, a large free car park and an intermission for a chance to catch up with friends. And if all that’s not enough, maybe our licensed bar can tempt you along!” New Earswick Folk Hall was built over 100 years ago by Joseph Rowntree to bring his community together. A century on and the Foundation and Housing Trust are still supporting that same ethos. The regeneration work to bring ‘New Lodge’ under it’s wing has also brought a full post office and York Explore library into the fold. A new improved kitchen, café and restaurant, as well as breakout meeting spaces, all help to cement this century old building as the heart of New Earswick for many years to come. Visit Film at the Folk Hall’s Facebook page or www.filmfolkhall.com for all the up to date information about what’s on and how to get tickets.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Courier Fraud
by PCSO Andy Smith 5520
Your bank or the police will never: • Phone and ask you for your PIN or full banking password. • Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping, or send someone to your home to collect cash, PIN, cards or cheque books if you are a victim of fraud.
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has identified an increasing number of reports submitted to Action Fraud from the public concerning courier fraud. Fraudsters are contacting victims by telephone and purporting to be a police officer or bank official. To substantiate this claim, the caller might be able to confirm some easily obtainable basic details about the victim such as their full name and address. They may also offer a telephone number for the victim to call to check that they are genuine; this number is not genuine and simply redirects to the fraudster who pretends to be a different person. After some trust has been established, the fraudster will then, for example, suggest; • Some money has been removed from a victim’s bank account and staff at their local bank branch are responsible. • Suspects have already been arrested but the “police” need money for evidence. • A business such as a jewellers or currency exchange is operating fraudulently and they require assistance to help secure evidence. Victims are then asked to cooperate in an investigation by attending their bank and withdrawing money, withdrawing foreign currency from an exchange or purchasing an expensive item to hand over to a courier for examination who will also be a fraudster. Again, to reassure the victim, a safe word might be communicated to the victim so the courier appears genuine. At the time of handover, unsuspecting victims are promised the money they’ve handed over or spent will be reimbursed but in reality there is no further contact and the money is never seen again.
Don’t assume an email or phone call is authentic just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother’s maiden name), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Be mindful of who you trust – criminals may try and trick you into their confidence by telling you that you’ve been a victim of fraud

Sigiriya - The Lion Rock in Sri Lanka 19th century when the British scaled the rock and discovered the ruins. Sigiriya is now a world heritage site and whatever the crowds, the mighty coppercoloured rock takes your breath away, rugged and scarred, inaccessible, it seems, yet you can see patches of grass and lonely trees sprouting from the top. At the base of the rock, a gentle stroll takes you past the remains of outer and inner ramparts, the moats and water gardens, until you reach the natural archway marking the start of the steep stone steps.
T
here are no lions in Sri Lanka but when the first king arrived from India, his flag portrayed a lion symbolising hope and freedom. The Sri Lankan flag has endured ever since, except in colonial times when it was tucked away in England, in the Royal Chelsea Hospital.
Then it’s a climb to the fresco cave – branching up a near vertical spiral staircase – where sensuous bejewelled maidens have beckoned for over 1,500 years. With slender waists and generous bosoms, the ladies of the court appear almost unreal in soft golden colours. Over the centuries, myriad pilgrims and artists have fallen in love with these Cloud Maidens and recorded their impressions on the nearby Mirror Wall. Roughly half-way up, the open Lion Terrace is a great place to rest, enjoy the view and gaze at what was once the Lion Staircase House, the last and only gateway to the palace on the top. The lion lost its head long ago but the massive paws carved into the rock beckon the fittest up the last dizzying stairway.
Today visitors come from far and wide to set eyes on Sigiriya, the Lion Rock rising in the central province, a sheer 200 metres above the plain. It’s a scenic landmark, hauntingly dramatic since patricide and usurper king Kasyapa built his palace on the very top in 477.
The summit takes everyone by surprise, a plateau stretching 1.5 hectares, glowing with red terraces and ancient walls. This is the highest point and innermost precinct of the whole complex, where a royal garden and outer and inner palaces converged on a rock-cut pool.
Away from the capital, he designed this impregnable fortress to keep safe, should his half-brother, the rightful heir, return from exile. He did, in 495, and when Kasyapa foolishly came down to lead his army, the royal elephant suddenly changed direction. It was to avoid a bog, they say, but thinking this was a signal to retreat, the army deserted. Kasyapa killed himself on the spot.
There are very few ruins up there but no one seems to mind, for spellbinding vistas lead you from the plain and formal gardens far below to the wooded slopes, the terraced gardens and the boulder gardens where the dramatic ‘Cobra Hood Cave’ preserves fragments of ancient paintings. Mountains rise in the distance, but on this lofty perch you feel on top of the world.
The palace was abandoned, Buddhist monks settled back in the caves and all was forgotten until the

Settling Your Child Into Nursery Life with York Montessori Nursery
Starting this new stage of life and settling your little one into nursery will always be emotional for you and your child. So it’s really important for you to feel comfortable with the choice of childcare you’ve made, that will help settle the whole family in and take the time you need.
transition to nursery life. For instance, we will always plan at least 3 sessions in as many weeks, but if you need more sessions, we understand. We’ll progress to being able to leave your child for an hour or two so they have experienced everything – activities, snack time, a meal. We will always encourage the parent to say a proper goodbye to their child when they leave the room, with a big smile. That way, they will build trust and confidence in their child. You should find that you fill in a form full of questions about your child, so we have really useful information about family, culture, foods, as well as health information and needs. There may be a favourite book, nursery rhyme or comforter which would really help during these first few days or weeks. Anything you feel is important to pass on, always do so.
Some children settle easily, some will take time. Some families may have had a ‘home visit’ and some may not. But as you start, there should always be a set of ‘settling-in sessions’ to help you and your child
Remember, you’ve chosen a fantastic place for their child to be secure, meet other children, have great fun and learn all sorts of amazing skills. This is going to be good for you all.
Open up the world for your child with our Montessori nurseries. Outstanding care and education to inspire and guide each individual child.

“Look lively,” Dave whispered to Barry as he climbed off the last rung of the ladder, “here comes trouble.” “Hey you!” The man striding towards them was Mr Byard, who considered himself a very important person at Maxspeed Sportswear. “I need a word with you both.” Dave winked at Barry and gave the sill one last cursory wipe with his chamois. “Everything alright with the windows, sir?” he asked. “Pigeons have been busy.” “Certainly.” Mr Byard seemed flustered. “Great job.” “That’s because we’re the best window cleaners for miles,” Barry smiled. “We’ve done all your office windows, and now we’re going round the front to give your reception a good going over.” “Indeed.” Mr Byard ran his hand through his thinning hair. “I’m afraid we have a small problem.” “Why’s that?” Dave frowned. “I saw them reception windows when we pulled up in the van, proper smeary.” Barry nodded in emphatic agreement. “I don’t suppose you noticed,” Mr Byard coughed, “but we’ve got a lot of very expensive vehicles in the car park today.” “I didn’t spot that,” Dave said. “Did you Barry?” “Posh cars?” Barry scratched his head. “I wasn’t looking.” “It’s our Annual General Meeting,” Mr Byard explained. “We’ve got our most important shareholders arriving in reception.” “Business must be booming,” Dave said. “It does have the potential to go boom,” Mr Byard grimaced. “And that’s the problem.” “Anything we can help with?” Dave said, folding up his chamois. “It’s a little awkward,” Mr Byard flushed, “but would you gentlemen mind awfully removing your sweatshirts?” It seemed for a moment that even the pigeons fell silent. “Mary in Marketing noticed you’re both wearing Burn-Sure sweatshirts, and the problem is they’re our main competitors,” Mr Byard stuttered. There wasn’t a single person in town who didn’t know that Maxspeed and neighbouring Burn-Sure were bitter rivals in the luxury sportswear industry. “Fair point.” Dave nudged Barry. “We’ll whip these right off.” Each man began pulling his sweatshirt
over his head. Whoa!” Mr Byard cried, as it became clear from the flash of two hairy bellies that both men were naked underneath. “That’s actually worse!” “Sorry, sir,” Dave said. “I don’t know what else to do? We don’t carry spare clothes in the van, do we Barry?” Barry shook his head. “We don’t – it’s a right conundrum.” “I have a solution.” Mr Byard was used to taking control in a garment crisis. He brusquely rapped on the office window. “Mary, pass me out two of our latest sweatshirts – large size.” He turned back to Dave and Barry. “Would you mind wearing our product while you’re on our property?” “Window cleaning’s a dirty business.” Dave held up his hands. “We wouldn’t want to borrow your clobber and give it back all filthy.” “Good point.” Mr Byard’s exasperation was reaching its peak. “You know what, just keep them.” “Only if you’re sure?” Dave said. “Mine’s an extralarge.” The window slid open and a hand, presumably belonging to Mary, passed two sweatshirts out towards them. “Proper quality garments these,” Dave said, changing into his new sweatshirt, “not like that BurnSure rubbish.” “It’s an honour to wear it, sir.” Barry bowed as though he’d just been given a medal. “You’re welcome,” Mr Byard nodded. “I really must be going, can’t keep the shareholders waiting.” The men waited until he’d disappeared back inside the building. “You were right, that worked like a charm,” Barry laughed. “This top is worth a few bob.” “Remember to wear it next time we clean BurnSure’s windows,” Dave chuckled. “I’ve never had to pay for my sweatshirts once.” By Jackie Brewster

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
Want to know how to avoid dental treatment?
M
any people are perfectly happy with their visits to their dentist, a quick cheap by Christine Parker check up is all they need however BDS (GDC 72136) some patients especially those with more complex dental needs or gum health problems may find themselves being referred onto secondary care or being offered the treatment in house but under private contract. Generally most private dentists can see you more quickly than an NHS Dentist as they often have fewer patients on their list, this also allows them to spend more time with you. Private dentists can use this extra time to really assess your oral health. Factors such as how dry your mouth is , what and when you eat and your brushing habits can all contribute to your oral health risk. Here at Howardian Dental we spend a full hour with each new patient fully assessing these and other factors, our trained oral health educator can often identify small risks which added together can explain why you tend to need treatment. If you want some personalised advice on how to reduce your treatment needs in the future and have a healthier more comfortable mouth then contact Jan and start your journey to better oral health. Many of our patients are saying how they now feel in control of their oral health for the first time in their lives. If you want to learn more please contact Jan at Howardian Dental
Roll of Honour
During the past two and a half years the Tang Hall Local History Group have undertaken research on York and district men who did National Service between 1948 and 1963. To date we have recorded over 100 men, 64 from York. It is thought that there are still others who served but have not been recorded. If this applies to the reader and you would like your National Service recorded please telephone Ralph Peacock on 01904 421656 for details. To quote from the National Service men we have spoken to, “We are all growing old and in a few years we will be just a memory” and “Glad that someone is pulling all this together, as it will soon be lost history”.

STRENSALL LOCAL HISTORY GROUP
Wednesday 26 September 7.15pm in Strensall village hall.’Excavations at York Minster 1829-2012’ presented by Ian Milstead. YAT excavated beneath York Minster during the 2012 renovation works in the undercroft. The space beneath the cathedral was created during the emergency engineering works of the 1960’s, 70s when the central tower was saved from collapse by major unpinning works. This revealed archaelogy back to the Roman period when it was the location of the fortress headquarters of Eboracum. Records from work done since the early 19th century were vital in piecing together what was revealed in 2012.

Wednesday 19 September Illustrated talk on “Panama, Birding in the Rain” Ian Newton, who lives in York, will be well known to members of the group, not least from his many, beautifully illustrated talks to RSPB and YOC. He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and has specialised in Wildlife Photography for over 30 years. Ian’s visit to Panama’s Canopy Lodge coincided with some of the wettest weather ever recorded there. Despite the weather he came back with some of his favourite images of the colourful birds and other wildlife he saw. 7.30pm at Clements Hall, Nunthorpe Road, York. Further information at clementshall.org.uk. Entrance £3 Group members £3.50 non-members.

Motoring
The Best Convertibles For Under £2,000 With summer in full swing, if you want a drop-top to provide that wind-in-yourhair experience we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000.
MG TF
Rust is an issue, particularly on early models, but a clean example will provide miles of trouble-free motoring.
Mini Convertible
The ‘new’ Mini has proved to be immensely popular, and the convertible version was snapped up as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines. Available well within our £2,000 budget, make sure that the interior is straight, and listen for strange noises from the costly-to-replace power steering pump.
Readily available and well-priced, most MG TF’s come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car that seems to have aged well, and we found a number for well under our £2,000 budget.
Saab 9-3
Citroen C3 Pluriel
Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet
Designed to be five cars in one, the C3 Pluriel wasn’t successful, meaning you can pick up decent used examples and, though they may not have a sports car design, you still get that drop-top experience very cheaply. Most cars get alloy wheels and air conditioning, but make sure the folding roof functions correctly.
Mercedes SLK
Buying a used Mercedes can mean higher repair costs and pricier parts, so choose carefully – a decent servicing history is essential. An early 2000s SLK should be well-equipped, with electronically-adjustable seats and cruise control.
Toyota MR2
For no-frills, involving motoring, the little MR2 provides exciting performance from a 1.8-litre engine, and its compact size makes it feel nimble on the road. The lack of any real boot does make it impractical but there are plenty of reasonable examples available within budget.
Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 is a reliable, cheap-to-repair convertible and is a go-to choice for those who want a relatively involving drive coupled with compact dimensions.
The 9-3 convertible is a comfortable and spacious drop-top, and there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status. Most Bugs come comprehensively equipped, with air conditioning and alloy wheels just some of the extras you’ll find fitted, and the Beetle is a decent and reliable soft-top.
BMW 3 Series Convertible (E46)
There are many examples of 3 Series convertibles to be found at this budget. Most common are E46 models, which are sturdy and excellent to drive. A variety of engines are available too, with even the top end straight-six models well in this price bracket. Double check the arches as these are prone to rust. In addition, turn the steering lock to lock while travelling at low speed and listen out for any troubling knocking noises.
Audi TT Roadster
There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi TT Roadster is a fine option. Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this soft-top still looks and feels fresh today. At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles. By James Baggot

Oaken Grove Surfers but people are still coming to us to learn how to use their computers and tablets. Jeannette took well-earned retirement a few years ago but I am still organising the sessions and would be very grateful for volunteers to work alongside the learners as mentors. Learners keep coming, but volunteer mentors are harder to find now. We use an online program called Learn My Way, with new Dell laptops. If learners want help with their tablets they bring them to the sessions.
In September ten years’ ago, Jeannette Slade and I began one to one classes in Oaken Grove Community Centre, Haxby for older people to become confident using a computer. We aimed at those people who never had reason to use a computer in their working lives and had no idea if anyone would come to our first session. Well they did, and they are still coming! In the early days, our numbers were high, 24 people in both of the sessions. Now the numbers are lower,

Gardening Lethal Leatherjackets. By Pippa Greenwood
D
addy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems

If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a
patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an openedout plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less good-looking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick – then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so

usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www.pippagreenwood. com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

Heatwave By The Pastoral Poet The recent Summer heatwave, Was hotter in the breeze, Men in undecided shorts, Showed off their knobbly knees. The temperature in Yorkshire, Was hotter than the Med. The grass was turning browner, The lawn mower in the shed. Attracted like a magnet, Sunbathers out in legions, Administering sunblock, To all their tender regions. Others in their gardens, Adorned in floppy hats. Awash with fly repellent, To ward of clegs and gnats. Train services disrupted, Because of warping metal. Hardy weeds were wilting, The thistle and the nettle. Water use restriction, The usual hose-pipe ban. At night, to keep us cool in bed, An oscillating fan. It seems we’re never satisfied, The weather’s never right. A drop of rain would do some good, If it would fall at night. And as the sun kept blazing, An ever burning ember, I know one thing is certain, It’s better than November.

Five common myths in the equine world Catriona Moon BSc(Hons) BVSc CertAVP(EP) MRCVS . Station House Vets
1. Salt: horses do not self-regulate their salt intake even if given free access to salt blocks. All leisure and competition horses need additional salt in their diet to meet their daily requirements. For most horses the addition of 10g salt per 100kg to their daily ration will meet their needs for maintenance and light work. For horses in harder work the addition of electrolytes will be required to meet electrolyte losses as a result of sweating. There is not enough salt in compound feeds to meet daily requirements. 2. Cooling horses: it is perfectly fine to pour cold water all over a hot horse after exercise; keep applying water until it is coming off cold. The heat will transfer from the horse to the water and then the water will evaporate and further cool the horse.

3. Drinking after exercise: it is perfectly safe for horses to drink after exercise, in fact they are most likely to drink immediately following cessation of exercise. Drinking before, during and after exercise is to be encouraged in order to prevent your horse from dehydrating. 4. Feeding before exercise: it is fine to feed a horse before exercise; in fact a double handful of an alfalfa based chop in the 30mins prior to exercise is ideal to top-up the food raft in the stomach and help to minimise any splashing of gastric acid onto the poorly protected squamous mucosa and reduce the risk of ulceration. 5. Iron: iron rich supplements are often used as an ‘energy boost’ or to ‘improve red blood cell numbers’ as a ‘tonic’, etc. Iron deficiency in the UK is actually very rare, with many horses actually being over-supplemented. Once a horse has taken in excess iron, it is very difficult for it to excrete it and iron toxicity actually occurs at very low levels. Iron is a pro-oxidant and increases oxidative stress and inflammation within the body. Iron does not boost energy, it does not improve red blood cell numbers, it will not correct anaemia unless it is due to high volume blood loss, and iron excess can decrease absorption of other minerals.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease in Rabbits by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
V
iral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) is extremely contagious, usually fatal. Death of the rabbit will occur in a short period of time 12-36 hours after first sign of fever. VHD has an incubation period of 1-3 days. There are two strains of RVHD, known as RVHD1 and RVHD2. Both strains are lethal and you must vaccinate to protect your rabbits. RVHD2 has been in the UK since 2013 and since then has overtaken the classic RVHD as the primary strain. Both strains of RVHD are spread by both direct contact with infected rabbits, or indirectly via their urine or faeces. Transmission is quick and doesn’t require prolonged contact it can be passed from one to another, via faecal matter of an infected rabbit. But the main carriers of this disease are, insects, flies, birds and rodents. The virus may be blown on the wind. You might bring the virus home on your feet, or your other pets’ feet (or car wheels) from infected wild rabbit droppings. You could bring the virus home on your hands or clothes. The viruses can survive for months in the environment, and are terrifyingly easy to bring home to your pets. They survive cold very well. In a rabbit suffering an acute form of VHD, one of the first clinical signs is a high fever. Other symptoms include; • Loss of appetite (anorexia) • Lethargy • Breathing difficulties • Bloodstained discharge from the nose or mouth • Convulsions • Incoordination and staggered movements However, in many situations the first sign is unfortunately sudden death. Sadly there is, as yet no cure for VHD. Rabbits suffering from VHD will die and in many cases death can occur without any signs. Any that do happen to survive remain carriers so need to be kept away from other rabbits and animals. As there is not cure, prevention is the way to safeguard your rabbit from VHD
Vaccinations can be given from 6 weeks of age and need to have a booster annually to maintain protection. It is important to note that the standard combo vaccine including RHD and Myxomatosis, does not offer immunity against RHD-2 strain. At Battle Flatts we offer a separate vaccine which can be given 2 weeks after the first, to protect against RHD-2. This should also be boosted annually. Vaccinations are only available from your veterinary surgeon and are extremely effective at preventing rabbits contracting VHD. Sadly in recent weeks here at Battle Flatts we have seen several cases of VHD in rabbits and are urging all rabbit owners to get their rabbits vaccinated against this fatal disease. Please contact your nearest Surgery for more information.
Come and meet Merlin! This handsome young cat came to us after previously living in a home with a lot of other cats. As you can imagine this was quite stressful for him at times, having to compete with other cats for limited resources, so now Merlin is looking forward to a home where he can enjoy some much deserved one on one time. This two year old fella can be a little shy at first but quickly comes around to enjoying a good fuss and tickle! As you can see from his photo he’s a wiggly little chap and the more attention he gets the more wiggly he becomes! Ask to meet Merlin today and be prepared to be rewarded with a lovely heartwarming purr from this sweet boy. If you would like to consider adopting this fine cat, then please call York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york. cats.org.uk for further details.

Hester really is a very sweet natured cat who will make a fantastic family pet. She came to us as her owner could no longer take care of her, and we would love to see this gentle cat get her happy ending and be part of a loving family once again. She is suitable to live with junior school age children and over, and will need to be a housecat. Mescal came to the centre via the inspectors after her needs were not getting met, she is a lovely lady who would love to share a sofa with you. Mescal has got to that point in
her life where she just loves to snooze away her days so a nice quiet home would be ideal for her, and will be a suitable housecat.

York Philatelic Society's 70th Anniversary buffet More than 40 members and guests of York Philatelic Society – founded in September 1948 – attended a 70th Anniversary buffet on Tuesday 26th June.
more than 50 A4 sheets covering 40 countries, and making a total of 453 stamps. The Society also unveiled its Anniversary mascot – a little cartoon character called ‘Phil Atterly’. Phil was created by artist Jo Claire and is modelled on a red definitive 1st class stamp and, being a good Yorkshireman, wears a flat cap.
The chief guests were the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of York, Councillor Keith Orrell and Mrs Judith Orrell. Councillor Orrell was sworn in as the 801st Lord Mayor of York in May this year. Also present were Graham Winter, Chairman of the Association of British Philatelic Societies; representatives of the Yorkshire Philatelic Association; and the guest speaker, Professor Tony Ward of the University of York.
In his speech, the Lord Mayor commented that the exhibition vividly recalled the events of 1948, a gloomy year of rationing and re-building in post-war Britain, illuminated by the birth of HRH The Prince of Wales and of that great institution, the National Health Service.
Guests viewed an exhibition of stamps from around the world which were issued in 1948, and stamps of later years commemorating events of that year –

The Lord Mayor said that stamp collecting offered not only aesthetic appeal, but was also useful in amassing information about geography, history, and the different cultures of the world population. Philately knew no international boundaries, he said, and brought people together.
