Editors Letter
W
elcome to the last edition of the Handy Mag of 2011. It has been a very busy year here at the Handy Mag and I’m looking forward to a rest at Christmas so that I can start 2012 feeling refreshed and ready for the first deadline of the year on 3rd January! I’m determined this year to have a relaxing break over Christmas with plenty of time to see family and friends. Guests will have to take us as they find us though as I know I’m never going to be the perfect housewife with food prepared and the house tidy but I’ll do my best as always….last minute mince pies, bought Christmas cake iced at home (November passes by too quickly for making Christmas cake!) and lots help from our lovely local food outlets.

I would like to wish all readers and advertisers a very happy Christmas and best wishes for 2012. Thank you to everyone who supports the magazine – and uses it. A special thank you to all the postmen and women who deliver the Handy Mag to all letterboxes in the area. You do a fantastic job! And thank you all the people who work behind the scenes at the magazine, without whom I would lose my sanity completely! The winner of the October Competition was Mrs Luck from Haxby. Well done! Until 2012

Stocking-Up on Stories
This Christmas
You can take it as given that there won’t be anything good on television again this holiday. Why not endeavour to beat the box this yuletide, armed with a book. We have the pick of the Christmas releases that are guaranteed to have the whole family engrossed, bringing peace on earth and a silent night of reading.
For Him
May I Have Your Attention Please? James Corden There’s no getting around it. Men like big, hardback, biographical tombs and what better than to buy the man in your life the highlyanticipated autobiography of funny-man James Corden. As a self-proclaimed attention-seeker, Corden’s life story (all 32 years of it, so far) will have you laughing and crying in equal measures. Talking openly about repeated knock-backs in his early career, Corden charts his life from his first role as family entertainer, right through to his national fame and winning a place in our hearts as ‘Smithy’ in the acclaimed TV series Gavin and Stacey.
For Her
Wrapped Up in You. Carole Matthews Down-with-love Janie Johnson is 30 and in need of kickstarting her life. She astounds her friends by deciding to leave the Christmas snow • info@thehandymag.co.uk
behind and heading off in search of the beating African sun and the vast landscape of the Massai Mara. Will Janie be able to escape her past and find love on a higher plain?
For Them
Immortal Beloved. Cate Tiernan For teenage girls mourning the end of the Twilight saga, comes ‘Immortal Beloved’, the first book in a new trilogy by acclaimed author for young adults, Cate Tiernan. This classically dark romance centres round Nastasya who’s forced to keep living her life over and over through her inherited immortality. Nothing ever changes when you’re doomed to live forever. An intense and thought-provoking book about friendship, love and loss. Diary of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever. Jeff Kinney Greg’s back for the sixth instalment of this hilarious series. When the Heffley
family are snowed in for the holidays, cabin fever inevitably sets in. What happens when you’re forced to spend time with your relatives? A definite must-read for any family this Christmas, this may even make your tribe seem normal.
For snuggling by the fireside
The Night Before Christmas. Clement Clarke Moore ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.’ Why not rediscover the classic Christmas poem; the perfect antidote to Christmas commercialism. It’s one of the most parodied poems of all time but the original still brings a tear to the eye. The Night Before Christmas is an ideal accompaniment to mince pies and warm milk ahead of the last sleep before the big day itself.
A Classic...
The Guinness Book of World Records 2012 Back for another year, this popular series will have you fighting over who reads it first. Filled with amazing records and human feats, bizarre animals and scientific absurdities, you’ll find the boring bit between Christmas and New Year seems to fly by.

hristmas is great, but all that socialising can become stressful and a packed diary means less time to prepare for those all important dates. So, what you really need is an easy, effective and well-planned beauty routine that’s going to save you hours getting ready, guarantee you’ll look gorgeous and ensure that you’re the centre of attention - for all the right reasons. Preparation is certainly essential. Book hair appointments well in advance; it’s the busiest time of year for stylists and a

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE marvellous mane is a must-have accessory. As great as it is to try out a new look, be cautious around the holiday season - hair disasters are sure to kill party spirit! Instead stick to a look that you know suits you and that’s easy to manage - leave the re-styles until the new year. Cold winter days, centrally heated rooms and the usual bouts of seasonal flu can play havoc with your skin, leaving it dull, dry and lifeless. So it’s a good time to take notice of your skin type and invest in a routine that will leave it glowing. Dry, sensitive types suffer more in the winter and need to be regularly moisturised. Apply a day cream in the morning and a ‘heavier’ night cream in the evening to keep moisture levels topped up. Oily skin shouldn’t be neglected. It too needs moisturising - a ‘light’ product works best, and should be used twice daily. Don’t forget the delicate eye area too - use an eye cream daily to avoid wrinkles. Time to find your perfect party make-up look. It’s a good idea to take advantage of the free makeovers offered by most of the top beauty brands at department stores. Having a specialist consultant offer their expertise when it comes to the way you apply your make-up can result in a great new look for you. And you get to try out the products before you buy. Take notice of professional application tips and invest in the right tools - quality makeup brushes leave a great finish. Long lasting foundations, lengthening mascaras and vibrant lipsticks work wonders for evening, and will help keep you looking great into the small hours. And finally, get your nails looking as polished as you are. Repair breakage and reinforce damage to the nail surface with a strengthening treatment. File and shape before applying lashings of colour. Or, for a really fashion-forward look, try the latest trend - nail wraps. They’re cute, creative, fun and perfect for a party. With everything now in place to make you look fabulous, all that’s left to do is enjoy every minute of the best time of year and make this Christmas one to remember. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

This classic cake, named after the Sacher hotel in Vienna, has a wonderfully rich chocolate flavour and is delicious served with a spoonful of whipped cream or crème fraiche and a small cup of black coffee. 150g unsalted butter, softened 150g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 6 large eggs, separated 150g plain chocolate, melted 75g ground almonds 50g plain flour, sifted
FILLING AND ICING 140g plain chocolate 5 tbsp strong black coffee 150g icing sugar, sifted 6tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved 50g milk chocolate, melted
1.
Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4. Grease and base line a 23cm (9in) spring-form tin with greaseproof paper.
2.
Place the butter, sugar and vanilla extract in a large bowl and beat together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg yolks then stir in the melted chocolate. Fold in the ground almonds and plain flour.
3.
Whisk the egg whites until stiff. Beat about one third of the whites into the chocolate mixture then gently fold in the rest with a metal spoon. Pour into the prepared tin. Bake for 40-45 minutes until firm to the touch. Cool for 10 minutes then turn the cake out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool completely.
4.
To make the filling and icing, place the chocolate and coffee in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Stir until smooth then gradually beat in the icing sugar to make a smooth thick icing.
5.
Halve the cake horizontally and sandwich back together with some of the apricot jam. Spread the rest of the jam over the top and side of the cake. Spread the icing all over the cake, smoothing it gently down the sides with a palette knife. Leave in a cool place for 2 hrs. Spoon the milk chocolate into a small paper piping bag and pipe ‘Sacher’ on top of the cake. Leave until set.

W
hether you’re creating a personal gift, or simply fixing a pair of trousers, everything you need is much closer to hand now, thanks to the huge selection of wool and haberdashery essentials on the shelves at Clare Burborough’s traditional store. Major name wool products to suit all tastes and budgets are available, including Wendy, Peter Pan and Sirdar. There are also more modern and exotic fabrics available too. The ultra-soft, hypo-allergenic bamboo blends are excellent for babywear. There is a full range of DMC cross-stitch silks, plus buttons, ribbons, sewing thread and needles – everything you’d need from a local haberdasher. And for crafty youngsters, there are doll and bagmaking kits, too. The location of Castaway Yarns at 6 Haxby Shopping Centre (previously Wall of Sound) couldn’t be more convenient, and there is plenty of free parking. Clare welcomes visitors and browsers – she’s even provided a sofa and a table where you can spend time knitting, or browsing through patterns for sale. In fact, Castaway Yarns was set up to do much more than provide knitting materials and equipment – it’s intended to be a sociable centre for people to meet, share ideas and enjoy a common interest. Clare is a keen knitter herself, and currently runs the weekly Tuesday night ‘Knit and Natter’ groups
at St Nicholas Church in Wiggington – which is how she knew there was a need for a good knitting supplies store locally! She said: “We’d like to help people get back into knitting. It’s becoming much more popular nowadays, and we’re encouraging more people to take it up, too. If you have an idea you need help with, or you’re looking for inspiration, I’d be delighted to see you and offer what advice I can.” Castaway Yarns is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

HOMES & GARDENS
A real proper
Christmas Tree I have to admit it: I LOVE Christmas… and if there is one part of it I’d hate to do without, it’s a Christmas tree. No, I don’t mean a tinsley one or trendy black or brown one… I mean a tree complete with needles and ideally that wonderful aroma that only a real, proper Christmas tree can bring.
I
f you’re worried that real trees are not good for the planet, don’t forget that a British grown tree is most definitely not an ecological disaster zone – if you think about it, they’re a crop plant rather like a field of wheat except that they are generally given less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many more run of the mill crop plants. So go on, make sure you buy one this Christmas! There are a few things you ought to think about before you buy your tree, faced
with rows of different types at often very varying prices. It can be really daunting, so have a read of my guide to real Christmas trees:
The Norway spruce
(Picea abies) is the traditional tree, my favourite but perhaps not a favourite if you are more house proud. It has gorgeous dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable aroma but sadly it is the most likely to drop its needles. Having said that, if you treat it well, it
www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 31
HOMES & GARDENS won’t perform that badly and you can enjoy the lowest cost of the real trees.
The Scots pine is now a regular option
as a Christmas tree, with its long paired blue-green needles it’s quite distinctive. The needles are fairly densely packed on the branches and they also hold quite well.
The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica)
has long been the favourite festive tree in central Europe, as it’s good looking and has good needle holding… but of course no Christmas-tree smell!
The Nordman fir
(Abies nordmanniana) has become increasingly popular in recent years, with its shiny green needles being almost impossible to shift, so certainly a good choice for those who hate any mess.
The Fraser fir
(Abies fraseri) is less regularly available, but the combination of its good looks and needle holding capacity make it well worth considering. So, you’ve been persuaded to take the plunge, I hope? But how do you make sure you buy the best tree of the type you’ve decided on? And how do you help it keep its needles and its gorgeous appearance for as long as possible? It’s important not to buy a real tree too early as the longer they hang around after they’ve been cut, the more likely they are to go downhill. I always try to buy a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association – the BCTGA logo should be on the tree or clearly displayed nearby. Take a bit of time to choose the tree – check that it has a good, full shape and that its not too gappy or lop-sided (or if it has the leans make sure that this will be hidden when the tree is in
your house). Check the needles - they need to be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour for the type of tree you’ve chosen. They also need to be free from pests and diseases - basically anything yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits should be avoided at all costs. Never buy a tree that has already been netted as this makes it a real lucky dip situation. If you do buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - just recut the end of the trunk (yes, its time to dig out your DIY saw) and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. If it was in a net when you bought it, remove this as it’s important to have air circulating around the needles. When you bring the tree inside, try to avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir with water levels really well topped up – if kept well supplied with water then even the notorious (but lovely) Norway spruce Christmas tree should hold its needles well. When Christmas is over and it’s time for the tree to come down, complete the green-loop and make sure you recycle it – they’re not the easiest thing to recycle or compost at home, but many councils and garden centres now offer a recycling and Christmas tree chipping service. by Pippa Greenwood

YORK Stockton on the Forest Primary School
Happy Christmas...
Christmas Fair Friday 9th December 3:30 to 5 pm
H
ello again.
It’s nearly Christmas again, Mum’s dashing about the house, polishing and hoovering as she goes, and Dad has ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ blasting through the house every waking hour! What to make of Christmas!
All welcome Entrance Adults 50p, children free
Every year, I try to find small, yet expensivelooking presents for each of my friends at school. I tend to go for the ‘stocking fillers’ or new-look piggy banks and socks (which are often in the half price sale!), but by the time I have spent £5 - £10 on every friend, it ends up costing me an arm and a leg! This year we decided enough was enough and have all decided to do a ‘Secret Santa’. We each pick a friends’ name out of a hat and only buy that person a present – you can’t tell them that you picked their name, that’s the secret! This way, we can spend a bit more on a single present and nobody is left with junk that they’ll never use, and we all save money! A Secret Santa is a great thing to do whether with school friends or work colleagues so give it a go; but keep the secret or Father Christmas won’t come! For my family, a highlight of the winter is sledging and bumping down our local fields; and the last few winters have been bumper years for snow and bruises! Is it really worth it, trudging all the way up the hill for 20 seconds of thrill, followed by a face-plant in a snow drift? Here’s a tip for keeping sledging fresh - Simply get hold of a tractor tyre inner tube! Sledging on one of these is a whole new experience!! It’s faster, it doesn’t hurt your bum over the bumps so much and you can fit everybody on at once! When the whole family piles on and hurtles down the slope you can guarantee to be laughing as much as you are hurting! Merry Christmas, and see you in 2012

for winning the York Guitar Weekend 2011 Charity Guitar Treasure Hunt! He was presented with his Tanglewood Roadster guitar at MOR Music last month. Plans are underway for York Guitar Weekend 2012 where there will have more guitars, more live music and more events to draw people into York to join in with the festivities, and raise more money for local charity. This year we raised over £700 for the seven charities - The William Rhodes Appeal, Snappy, St Leonards Hospice, British Heart Foundation, York Against Cancer, The Blue Cross in Thirsk and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. MOR Music are also giving a brand new Tanglewood guitar to each of the charities to use, auction or raffle.

TRAVEL On his Coronation day in 2008, the young king of Bhutan pledged to promote Gross National Happiness above gross national income, just like his father had done before him. The people approved, the king bowed, showing humility and his desire to serve rather than rule.
F
irst time visitors to this tiny Himalayan kingdom may be surprised to find mobile phones, internet and satellite TV but although Bhutan welcomes progress and technology, it is never at the expense of its traditional values. Everyone agrees that these are essential to the country’s happiness and indeed survival. Respect is still the cornerstone of Bhutanese culture, offered not only to king and monks but to all human beings, animals and plants. Children may cover their mouth as they speak to avoid polluting the air you breathe and people bow at the roadside if a dignitary goes past - no compulsion, just tradition. Bhutan was given democracy as a parting gift by the retiring king, but the royal family remains as close as ever to the people’s heart. Where else would a king walk across the fields to chat to farmers, join in an archery contest or dance with his people at festival time? Bhutanese festivals are joyful religious events, a chance to meet family and friends from distant villages, have fun and earn merits for the next life according to tradition. There are dancing monks and jesters, offerings, blessings, Buddhist teachings, and reminders about safe sex and the importance of work, valued as an act of worship. Should a new shrine be needed or a temple statue, there’s no shortage of free labour and from a young age, children are taught house chores and farm work and expected to clean their classrooms to prepare them for adult life. 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Bhutan
Gross National Happiness Here there are no beggars or homeless in the streets, nearly every farmer owns his plot of land and men and women have equal status. Healthcare and education are free and a total smoking ban was introduced to protect the children’s health. It may seem harsh to outsiders but it made sense to the people. Most Bhutanese claim unreservedly to be happy, have no wish to live anywhere else and those who study abroad are keen to return. Travelling through the kingdom’s virgin mountains and valleys, it’s easy to understand. Buddhism teaches respect for nature and all living things and in matters of conservation, Bhutan is well ahead of many ‘developed’ nations. Some 60% of the land is protected forest, solar power and hydro-electricity are favoured for minimum impact, hunting and fishing are almost non-existent and there
are no plastic bags. Small farmers and herders respect the environment and national parks and reserves stretch from tropical lowlands in the south to snowy peaks and glaciers in the north. It’s no wonder this small kingdom should claim over 5000 species of plants, including blue poppies, rare orchids and a wealth of medicinal herbs. Black bears, snow leopards and tigers live undisturbed and there are over 675 species of birds, from hornbills to endangered black-necked cranes whose return to wintering grounds is celebrated with great joy. In the quest for Gross National Happiness, this pristine natural world is sure to play a major role, alongside sustainable development and unshakable traditional values. by Solange Hando

YORK Buying presents for gadget fans can be tricky, because in many cases they already have what they need. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with USB lava lamps and iPod socks, though: there are lots of great gifts to choose from - and your present won’t end up stuck in a desk drawer somewhere.
Last minute gadget gifts
I
f you’re buying for an iPod, iPad or iPhone owner - or owners of other smartphones or tablets accessories make particularly good presents. Firms such as Proporta and Griffin make very high quality cases to keep precious gadgets safe. You can also buy cases for devices such as Amazon’s Kindle - although the best such case is Amazon’s own, rather pricey, Kindle leather cover with built-in reading light. If you can’t or don’t want to spend £50 on a Kindle case, you’ll be pleased to discover that there are lots of perfectly good alternatives for considerably less cash on Amazon.co.uk. We particularly like Diabloskinz’ Kindle “skins”, which cover the Kindle’s dull plastic with something considerably more colourful. There’s a great selection of useful accessories for iPod and iPhone owners too, many of which are compatible with other music players and smartphones: for example, Belkin’s Tunecast 2 plugs into a headphone socket and transmits sound over FM radio frequencies, which is handy for in-car listening or broadcasting to multiple radios in the house. For fitness fans Gear4 and Adidas make armbands for iPhones and iPods, and for audiophiles there’s a dizzying range of headphones and speaker docks. If you’re buying for a frequent flyer, look out for noise-cancelling headphones: they’re superb for air travel. There are lots of gift ideas for 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
photography fans too. The superb GorillaPod range of portable tripods are guaranteed to make snappers happy, while serious photographers might be chuffed to receive a Hama Lens Cleaning Pen or an infrared remote control for their particular model. Alternatively, Photojojo.com has a great range of coffee mugs that look identical to iconic camera lenses, and there are plenty of UK stockists - including Amazon.co.uk - offering delivery in plenty of time for Christmas. Other great gifts for tech fans include the precision of Logitech’s G500 Gaming Mouse (£60) or a portable, wire-free mouse (around £30). Console owners needn’t be left out, either: an official wireless headset for Sony’s PlayStation 3 is around £23. If you’re looking for something more off the wall, how about a flying shark?
Iwantoneofthose.com has Air Swimmers, which are remote controlled balloons shaped like sharks, clownfish and so on. Air Swimmers have been a YouTube sensation, racking up more than 3 million hits from amused gadget fans. If you’re feeling flush, you could also invest in a pair of Tramp-it Jumping Shoes (from £89) for some truly eye-popping outdoor fun. You don’t need to spend a fortune to find a decent gadgety gift, however. You can pick up - no pun intended - a set of Star Wars Chop Sabers, chopsticks designed to look like lightsabers, for around £11, while the award-winning FroliCat BOLT promises to drive your cat crazy with a high-tech, laser-powered take on a ball of wool for around £19. The completely ridiculous Condiment Gun is a £16 pistol for spraying mustard or ketchup on your lunch, while the slightly more grown-up Tovolo TeaGo is a £12 press that promises perfect tea from your favourite tea leaves.

Make a stand for THOMAS Generous community members are rallying around to put a Strensall teenager on his feet for the first time in his life.
T
he Make a Stand for Thomas campaign is working to raise funds for an operation that will allow 14-year-old Thomas Arnett to take his first steps alone. He has cerebral palsy, which has caused nerve damage leaving him without the control over his legs needed to walk. He currently gets around using a wheeled walking frame or a wheelchair, and until recently it was not expected that he would ever be able to walk independently. However, the new operation, called a selective dorsal rhizotomy, would give Thomas a chance of being able to walk on his own with sticks. It is a pioneering procedure in which the problem nerves are cut, preventing the messages going to the brain
which lead to the legs tightening up. Thomas will travel to Bristol for the procedure, which will be followed by intensive physiotherapy. When the local PCT said they could not fund the £25,000 operation, family, friends and the Strensall community took matters into their own hands, launching a massive fundraising campaign to pay for it. Close family friend Clare Inkster, who is leading the fundraising campaign, said: “Because of Thomas’ condition, he is unable to walk and uses a wheelchair. I am yet to hear him moan about this. “Thomas has a nice life, goes to school and has a lovely family and friends. He has never been able to walk and it was never thought it would be possible. However, changes in medical procedures are massive and now Thomas has a chance to be able to walk independently.” So far local people have organised a post-Christmas disco, a midnight walk and a fundraising day at Aviva York. Plans are also being considered by Escape Hair Salon to run a fundraising day, the
Army were planning a charity event, and they were in talks with a marathon-runner. They have raised more than £3,000 so far. The committee of the Make a Stand for Thomas Campaign would love to hear of any more ideas for fundraising, offers to run or host events, or receive any other support of any kind. Thomas lives in Strensall with his mum, Adele, his brother Jack and sister Lauren. His stepfather Andrew is currently serving in Afghanistan. His story has already featured in the York Evening Press and on Look North. Clare added: “This operation would change his life – he is a big personality, but we want him to stand tall.” Donors can support the campaign via their justgiving page, at www.justgiving. com/teams/makeastandforthomas, and the Tree of Hope Children’s Charity is also backing the campaign. Call Clare on 07932 392231 or email to andy@ainkster.wanadoo.co.uk for more information on how to help.

MOTORING
Save money on motoring
YOUR car is likely the second biggest purchase you ever make – so it’s vital you protect that investment.
J
ust as you wouldn’t let a leaky roof or broken guttering fester on your house, you need to pay regular attention to your car to keep it in good working order too. And it’s not just about a bucket and sponge. Simple maintenance tasks can preserve your car’s life and its value at resale time. The difference between a car in ‘excellent’ and ‘below average’ condition can be £1,000, according to trade valuation experts, so it really pays to look after your motor. Here are some practical tips to help you save money in the long run. Well Oil Be
Easy Does It
It’s amazing how many motorists don’t even know how to check their oil, let alone remember to top it up. However, failing to do so will have dire consequences. Check it fortnightly, making sure the car is on level ground, engine cold and the level is between minimum and maximum. Check coolant levels too and get any abnormal noises or poor performance problems checked by an expert.
The way you drive can dramatically affect how long your car will last. Driving with care, avoiding harsh acceleration and hard braking will reduce wear on components. It’s also worth thinking, do you need to make that trip? Lower mileage cars are worth more.
Polished off
Air We Go
Air-conditioning needs regular attention. Topping up the system with gas and lubricating it will cost around £70 at a garage and should be done every two years. This will stop unpleasant smells and bacteria forming. Poorly serviced systems have to work harder, putting undue strain on the engine.
At Your Service
The recession saw many motorists skip servicing to try and save money. This really is a false economy. Sticking to your car’s maintenance schedule will ensure it’s working properly, prevent failures and prove it’s been looked after at resale time. Keep every receipt and old MOT, as well as a stamped-up service book for the next owner.
Fuel’s gold
It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life.
Tyred Out
The penalty for driving on illegal tyres (under 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s tyres weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Cleaning your car regularly with quality products is the best way to preserve its value. Glass’s Guide says a comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value.
Hose Down
A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers.
Wheel-ie good idea
Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Used car buyers love alloy wheels, but only if they’re in good condition.

YORK Do you love gaudy baubles? Or are you more of a minimalist Christmas decorator? Katherine Sorrell outlines how to avoid Yuletide decorating excess while still enjoying a stylish festive season…
A Cool Yule by Katherine Sorrell
W
hen I was little my grandparents always had a fake Christmas tree that groaned with the weight of about a thousand sputnik-shaped fairy lights. Candy-coloured and frosted with artificial ice, they flashed on and off in a way that, to a five-year-old, was nothing if not glorious. Yup, my grandparents really went for it – and if that’s your style, I’m not going to knock it. There is another Christmas-decorating school of thought, however. One that allows you to celebrate without going over the top. Here are five guidelines to help you create a stylish seasonal look for your home:
1. The wreath
Your front door is the handshake to your house, and a pretty Christmas wreath is a welcoming addition. Buy or make one that suits the size and colour of your door. Natural materials such as holly, ivy, bay and twisted willow are lovely, and you can finish it off with berries and ribbon for a traditional effect; alternatively, wire and pale-coloured beads are subtle and sophisticated. Just avoid the pine-conesprayed-with-gold-paint-look.
2. The tree
No Christmas is complete without a tree, and this is where ideas of pared-back décor tend to go astray amid a chaotic surge of baubles and assorted hanging things that you’ve accumulated over the years. Less is more, so stick to a colour theme: you could use plain silver balls with white or coloured lights, for example. Or go for a natural look, perhaps using ribbons, green twine and cinnamon sticks. For those leftover decorations that you’re desperate to display, why not pile them onto a small tree in a pot, or create a separate mantelpiece or fireplace arrangement?
3. The cards
Gather together an eclectic mix of lovely items and festoon your mantelpiece or windowsill with festive goodies. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Even with the rise of e-greetings, the demise of the traditional Christmas card seems far away. But what to do with them all? Organise them, is the answer. Propping them up randomly around the house might make for a jolly, ad hoc look, but if you arrange them en masse it’s far more effective. if you’re short of time, the

york
december 2011 • issue 75 best solution is simply to clear a side table or shelf and arrange the cards carefully with the largest at the back. But if you want to go for effect, try using painted mini wooden pegs to attach cards to a string, or punching a hole in each card and tying it on with bright ribbon, raffia or yarn.
4. The table
Abandon any thoughts of paper napkins printed with holly berries or tartan – simple colour co-ordination is key here, from table cloth (or runner) to serviettes, plates, glassware and any extras. And the colour doesn’t just have to be red or green – with some lateral thinking a gorgeous display can be created around an unusual colour theme: pastels, icy whites and silvers, dark and moody or contemporary brights, perhaps. Start by picking one colour, and accessorise with touches of co-ordinating tones. If your crockery is coloured, it makes sense to work everything around that; if it’s white, you can do pretty much whatever you like. No need to spend a great deal of money – much can be achieved by choosing accessories such as candles, crackers and flowers with care.
Mix colours, textures and patterns to suit your taste and style.
5. General displays
There was a time when chains of coloured paper hung from corner to corner of the room were the height of Christmas chic. This may no longer be the case – but home-made decorations can still be a wonderful thing. It could be as simple as a row of chunky candles, wound round with ivy, a wooden bowl filled with clove-studded oranges, or a string of white fairy lights clustered in a glass vase. And last but by no means least, involve the children in making paper chains, bunting or felt cut-outs for that charmingly wonky, home-made look.
