Improve insulation & retain the original character

The ‘what’s on’ listings are practically exploding with so many local events to support in the run up to the big day and there are loads of local businesses ready to help you celebrate. When this magazine is at the printers, Nicky, Imogen and I will be attempting to create a Christmas wonderland in our shop window! If you have seen our shop, it’s not very big so is a bit of a challenge. Nicky and Imogen love all things Christmas and are insisting on carols while we work, flashing lights and Christmas biscuits every day – the latter I can cope with! If our next edition is a bit sparse you’ll know it’s because we’ve been too busy celebrating! Next month we’ll be publishing a January edition. This doesn’t normally happen. I usually get a lovely break over Christmas but this year we decided that there really is just too much to tell people so have decided on a New Year edition – very exciting! If you have anything special happening in January, please call or email and let us know. Our deadlines are usually the first Tuesday of the month for the following month’s edition – 2nd December for the January edition. Don’t forget to keep in touch on Twitter @ Handymag, Facebook, by email to marianne@ thehandymag.co.uk or visit our website at www.thehandymag.co.uk for up to date listings of events and all of our advertisers. Well done to Betty Daker for winning the October competition. A Ewe Move umbrella is on the way to you. We hope you all have a very wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. Until 2015….

UNLOCK THE POTENTIAL IN YOUR HOME...

...by converting your loft or extending your home with the experts – Attic Attack, based in York. go through the stress of an expensive house move, when you can make the most out of your current home?

Colin and his son Jake outside their latest loft conversion

W

hile house prices are on the up, one the best ways to increase the habitable ‘square footage’ of your home is to have a hassle-free loft conversion, a kitchen extension or garage conversion. Colin Heels, Director of Attic Attack, explains. “Space in a home is at a premium. Why

“A loft conversion takes just six to eight weeks to complete. We look after all aspects of the project, including architectural plans, the planning application, building regulations, plumbing, plastering and the electrics. We even tidy up at the end of the project, leaving your home spic and span after we’ve finished!” Colin and the team will sit down with customers and work out a tailor-made project to suit lifestyle and budget. “And if it is a loft conversion that is needed, we supply and fit a loft ladder and can board the loft area too,” said Colin. “We have just completed five loft conversions in

one street in York. Word obviously spread about the quality of our work!” Attic Attack can also help with other home improvements, such as installing bi-fold doors, uPVC windows and can transform a home with bespoke joinery fittings. While all households have to consider the financial implications of an extension, Colin can reassure customers about this too: “We work entirely to a customer’s budget, and clients will reap the financial benefits of improving their home by increasing the value of their home, or by avoiding a move to a larger house, which in most cases would cost a great deal more.”

SO DON’T MOVE, IMPROVE WITH THE HELP OF ATTIC ATTACK! Tel: 01904 789758 Mob: 07730 269798 www.atticattackyork.com www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 19

A GIFT FOR YOU AT CHRISTMAS We’ve got Christmas all wrapped up this year, with a set of books designed to have every aspect of the holiday covered. If all else fails though, there’s always the option of packing it all in and doing a runner…and we’ve thought of that as well.

The Tree: ‘The Giving Tree’

by Shel Silverstein What better kind of spruce this festive season than ‘The Giving Tree’. Loved by children and adults alike, this is a story about a little boy who grows up under the branches of a tree, and continues to take and take throughout his years into adulthood. If you don’t cry when you read this then quite frankly, you must have a heart of stone. It’s such a simple and touching story about our capacity to love and it’s perfect for some fireside snuggling up with whoever you have staying with you this Christmas.

The Gift: ‘The Gift’

by Cecelia Ahern If you ever thought there weren’t enough hours in the day then meet Lou Suffern, a man who is constantly needs to be two places at once and who is struggling to keep up. He finds it impossible to really ‘be’ in the present, whether it’s at work or at home with his family. One day he meets a homeless man called Gabe and, taking pity on him, sorts him out with a job in the post room. But there’s something not quite right about Gabe. He always appears to be in more than one place at once. It’s a bit ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for modern times, and goes to prove that as we suspected, time really could be the greatest gift of all.

The Food: ‘Great British Bake Off: Christmas’

by Lizzie Kamenetzky ‘Stuff your face with plates of blinis, fah-lah-lah-lah lah’ or however it goes! Christmas simply can’t go wrong with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry helping you along your merry way. There are master class recipes as well as contributions from all four previous winners and other memorable contestants. It’s packed with plenty of inspiration without causing you too much perspiration whilst slaving over a hot stove. It could be a present to yourself…or whoever you’ve talked into doing the cooking. 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Weather: ‘Let it Snow’

by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle Here are three touching and romantic stories that all stem from one incident, as a young girl decides to ditch the stranded train she was travelling on and heads out into the blizzard. The tales then take place over the following few days as the residents of Gracetown struggle to cope with the Christmas Eve storm. Written by some of today’s best-selling authors they are like three perfectly wrapped little stocking fillers.

The Family: ‘A Proper Family Christmas’

by Chrissie Manby Whenever someone tells you this is what they want, they mean the nostalgic Christmas card, cookie cutter image. They don’t mean the arguments, tears and recriminations that usually go hand in hand with the festive season. This is the story of two clashing families, brought together by the need to help the Buchanan’s seriously ill daughter, Izzy. The matriarch, Annabel, was adopted and so needs to find her own biological parents to see if Izzy can be saved. It sounds like a tear-jerker but it’s a warm and fuzzy one for Christmas.

The Escape Plan: ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert If all else fails and you really can’t stand your inlaws, or even your husband for any amount of time past Boxing Day, then why not just escape from it all? At 3am, Elizabeth’s seemingly perfect life is keeping her up and making her depressed. So, she ups sticks and heads off in pursuit of happiness. Her travels take her to Italy, India and then on to Bali, finding food for her soul and her belly along the way. It’s the perfect antidote to all that forced happiness and fun. Alcohol can also make you far more vulnerable to those that would wish to commit offences. Always try to avoid finding yourself alone in town when drunk as you could become a victim of crime. Thefts from those who are drunk are all too common. Keep your personal possessions safe, do not take more cash out with you than you will need and keep phones and other items on your person and secure.

THE FESTIVE SEASON

W

e are all aware that we are now fast approaching the Festive Season and the Christmas is only just around the corner. Many of us will be attending atleast one Christmas Party in the next few weeks, whether that be with work or with family and friends. Every year the Police reinforce the message about not drink driving although every year there are individuals that continue to drive with excess alcohol in their systems. A conviction for drink driving will have a massive impact on anybody’s life.

Try wherever possible to stay in groups so that you do not find yourself alone in unfamiliar locations with people that you do not know. Whilst the vast majority of people will be out at parties simply looking to enjoy themselves there will be people who will be out looking for any opportunity to take advantage of you, and putting yourself into a vulnerable position just increases the risk of becoming a victim. The Christmas period is a time when we can all have fun but remember to take simple precautions to make sure that it is remembered for the right reasons and not the wrong ones. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

Many of us will drink more over the Christmas period than we usually do. There is however no excuse for getting behind the wheel of a car having had too much to drink. You should always consider the most appropriate way to get to and from any Christmas party, whether that be by bus or taxi, or to have one designated driver who will not drink and transport other guests. It is important to also remember that if you are unfortunate enough to be due at work the morning after any Christmas Party to consider how much alcohol will still be in your system at that time. If you are in any doubt whatsoever as to how much alcohol is still in your system the morning after any party then you should make appropriate arrangements to get into work that day. Many people are caught over the limit going to work or taking the children to school the next day. When out at your party you should also be aware of the effect that alcohol will have on you. It may make people more aggressive and the festive season would be ruined if you were to be arrested following a drunken fight.

WARNING - DANGER AHEAD! Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

I recently attended a SOLLA workshop when psychologist, Lynda Shaw, explored the difficulties of advising elderly clients about financial matters. Lynda has undertaken significant research on behalf of Standard Life on the role that emotions play in our actions and behaviour in everyday life. Lynda gave a fascinating and, to be honest, disturbing insight. She explained that humans have a sort of inbuilt ostrich mechanism which means that if a particular danger or threat isn’t immediate, the brain totally ignores it and refuses to give it further attention.

I’m a member of the “Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA)”, an organisation that helps people find trusted financial advisers who understand financial needs in later life. Inheritance tax and care costs can wipe out a lifetime of savings and people concerned about this need reassurance that an adviser understands this complex area of advice. SOLLA advisers undertake additional training to develop real expertise to gain this independent accreditation.

That explains a lot about why people don’t put plans in place to make sure their family, and not the Tax Man, benefits from their life savings. It’s not an immediate threat so they ignore it. And when it is an immediate threat – in other words you are on your last legs – it’s too late to do anything about it. That’s why the Tax Man collects billions in this tax every year. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything to change human behaviour. But I can keep banging the drum that Inheritance Tax is pretty much a voluntary tax that’s avoidable if you choose to take action early enough. That’s why I’ve written a book “37 ways to slash £thousands off your Inheritance Tax bill” which is out shortly, normally priced £5.99. But I’ve got 10 copies to give away to the first Handy Mag readers who ask for it.

A BETTER LIFE HERE’S LOOKING AT YULE KID by Derek Thompson Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com

E

ven though we’ve had it planned for months, Christmas is always a magical time. Our decorations go up late sometime between the Winter Solstice and Christmas Eve - apart from the wreath that Anne makes from anything seasonal in the garden or the woods. It’s a Heath Robinson affair with holly, hebe, laurel, pinecones, acorns, or anything else we see on our travels. (One year it included a little plastic helicopter, until Anne made me take it off.) In lieu of an indoor tree, I’ve started hanging baubles on the silver birch in the garden. We’ll skip the village carol service - you may recall ‘Carolgate’, where we ended up sitting in the pulpit due to a scarcity of seats - but we’re certainly not of the “Bah! Humbug!” brigade. (A bar of chocolate would be a different matter altogether) I know I’ll wake up early on the big day like an excitable child. We’ll begin with the ceremonial unwrapping of the cat’s present, accompanied by tea. After that it’s a small present each, quite possibly swapping packets of heritage seeds, and then off to the beach. If the tides are with us we’ll hunt beach glass for that mosaic we’ve been saving up for, along with any weathered crockery pieces. After a bracing walk across the sand, it’s back home for festive (cinnamon) porridge and present time again. This year I’ll surprise Anne with a new addition to her charm bracelet - an Irish thruppenny bit, sporting a hare. It’s nostalgic recycling, as it was once a part of my boyhood coin collection. Both of us have a thing for hares.

medicine again (don’t worry, she never reads these columns until the following month). In fact, this year it’s a Better Life Christmas altogether. Anne’s chicken is locally sourced, while my nutroast is my own work (I think we all realise that Anne will probably need to rescue it). Similarly, the veg is either homegrown or produced in the area. We’ve skipped festive crackers so that I can read from a list of jokes I wrote and couldn’t sell. For example: This year, due to cutback, Father Christmas is only making ‘Made in China’ stickers. The eagerly awaited Christmas pud is Anne’s pet project; she’s been feeding it with a monthly sup of brandy since last December, so it’ll definitely flambé! She has also promised icecream (we got the machine cheaply through an ad in the local paper) using some blackberries from the freezer. And Anne’s big present? Well, in the past we’ve had a fox, bats, a toad, shrews, moles and at the very least a hedgehog poo in the front garden, so I thought it’d be fun to capture some evidence. The new wildlife camera can take pictures in daylight or at night-time, so at the very least we’ll see just how active the cat is nowadays. In the evening there’ll be cards or a Scrabble tournament, as we watch the Yule log burning and argue over whether you’re allowed to put down ‘zo’ if you can’t say what it is. Then, after victory and defeat, we’ll raise a glass of sloe gin by candlelight and start thinking about the Boxing Day garden tidy-up. Cheers!

We’ve gone back down the sloe gin route this year, after I promised not to say that it tastes like 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The ChristmasTruce by Alison Runham

C

hristmas Eve 1914. The Western Front. Weeks of rain have ended and mud is becoming ice. Despite calls for a Christmas ceasefire, fighting has continued throughout December, although today it seems halfhearted in many places.

EBOR MORRIS REUNION

Staff Sergeant Clement Barker is in his trench with his comrades. Across No Man’s Land, the Germans are decorating tiny trees sent from home with candles as they sing Stille Nacht (Silent Night). “The trenches were a blaze of Christmas trees,” one Tommy recalled, “and our sentries were regaled for hours with traditional Christmas songs.” In some places, English troops decide that they “ought to retaliate in some way.” “So we sang The First Noël... they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, O Tannenbaum.” At Barker’s trench, a German soldier appears. “He said that if (we) did not fire, they wouldn’t in the morning,” Barker wrote later. Next morning, Barker’s men cautiously venture out to retrieve and bury their dead. No shots are fired. Soon they’re shaking hands with the Germans and exchanging gifts, and then “a football is kicked out of our trenches, and Germans and English play football.”

Henry Williamson, who later wrote Tarka the Otter, also recalled football matches, but behind German lines; if British and German troops played together, he made no mention of it. However, despite the myths surrounding Truce matches between both 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

sides, some are well-documented in letters. Two soldiers of the 6th Cheshires described a huge, free-for-all match in Wulverghem, Belgium, where No Man’s Land was less damaged by shell fire.

the Germans were warned to expect visits from senior officers; they sent a message across, explaining that they would have to fire their machine guns, but would fire high to avoid hitting anyone.

Williamson recalled the Germans singing Silent Night, too, before inviting the English closer. His unit suspected a trap. “We crept out... expecting any moment to fall flat with the machine guns opening up. And nothing happened.” Both sides were soon exchanging gifts and greetings, and similar scenes were occurring at many points along the Front. Cigarettes, rations, uniform buttons and even addresses were exchanged. One English trench received a German chocolate cake, together with a ceasefire request and an invitation to an impromptu concert. “Just think,” wrote one soldier to his family, “while you were eating turkey I was talking and shaking hands with the very men I had been trying to kill a few hours before!”

For Barker, peace lasted a little longer too. “Night came and still no shots. Boxing day the same, and has remained so up to now,” he wrote a few days later. But gradually fighting resumed. Captain J.C. Dunn’s account of resuming hostilities is poignant: “I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet...[the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared... We both bowed and saluted... he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.”

The truce at Williamson’s position held for four days before orders arrived to end fraternisation, while

Both truces (and football games) had occurred in earlier wars. So what makes the 1914 Christmas Truce especially memorable? Perhaps because in a war that cost over 10 million lives, it was, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “one human episode amid all the atrocities.”

Saturday 20th December at 2pm and 7.30pm at New Earswick Folk Hall

COMMUNITY CINEMA COMES TO NEW EARSWICK

T

he latest exciting venture for NELLI (New Earswick Less Loneliness Initiative) is to bring a Community Cinema to the Folk Hall. Our team of volunteers has been working closely with Cinem@ to bring an exciting programme of films to the village. We are delighted to announce that at our launch event on Saturday 20th December we will be showing ‘Frozen - Sing-a-long Edition’ at 2:00pm and 7:30pm. This is a real coup for NELLIvision as it is the first time this version has been made available to a community cinema. We are very aware that the cost of going to the pictures these days can be very expensive, particularly if you have a number

of children, so we are determined to keep our prices low so that everyone can come along, not only to see a film in a very relaxed atmosphere and on your doorstep, but also to enjoy the essential popcorn or ice cream. At the screening of ‘Frozen’ prices range from £5:00 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and three children), £3:00 per adult, £1:50 per child with under 5’s going free – though they must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are on sale at the Folk Hall now. These prices will remain for all residents in New Earswick, who automatically become members, and will also apply to everyone who joins at an annual charge of £5. Prices will increase slightly for non-members for future showings.

One of the many advantages of a community cinema is that everyone can suggest films. Our current aim is to show films on the first Friday in the month at 7:30pm from February 2015 so there is the opportunity to think of a film you have seen and would like to view again, one you missed at the cinema or one recommended by a friend, then let us know when you come along to a screening and we will see if we can include it in our future programming. NELLIvision will only be a success if we get support from the local community so please do come along and help make this a popular new venture for NELLI. We are really looking forward to meeting you all on 20th December

WHITE LILY HOLISTIC THERAPIES AND THE CHARITY SNAPPY HAVE JOINED FORCES,

...offering an Irresistible Massage Package from just £20! Snappy (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York) provides social and recreational opportunities for children and young people with special needs, age five to 25. Operating in York and the surrounding area, Snappy helps to maximise the personal development of these young people, and offers a lifeline of help to their families. Owner of White Lily, Teresa Bovingdon, also based in York, is a fully qualified and insured professional therapist, specialising in Reiki and massage. Teresa creates individually tailored treatments to suit the needs of the clients, and delighted to come up with an idea that will help raise funds for Snappy. Teresa said: “As a mum myself, I find Snappy to be a truly inspirational local organisation. The Irresistible Massage Package has a minimum charge of £20 which covers you for a one hour treatment, which would usually cost £50. Proceeds go to Snappy, and you get a massage which supports your own well-being. How good does that sound?” Teresa offers 50 hours of treatments in aid of Snappy, and she looks forward to seeing clients on the massage table and to raising much-needed funds for the charity. Snappy was established in 1985, after it was noticed that children who attended special schools received little interaction during school holidays, and parents faced a very intense period of care. Nearly three decades later, Snappy works with about 300 children, young people and young adults. It is supported by trained volunteers and has an excellent reputation with outstanding Ofsted inspections. Call Teresa on 0780 313 9435 to book your massage before they’ve all gone!

Santa loves it at Dalby. It’s his busiest time of year but once again he’s making time to stop off on his whirlwind global tour. You can pick up a ticket (£6), and visit him to say hello. Not only does each child get a small gift but also a Norway spruce sapling to take home. Kids can plant their very own tree and watch it grow over the years. A gift that keeps on giving!

Spruce up your tree

Did you know that we sell Christmas trees? We’re especially proud that our top quality trees are responsibly sourced and grown locally. You can choose between a Norway spruce and a Nordman fir, ranging from 3ft to 8ft in height. It’s a big decision to make, so bring the family! Proceeds go to The Friends of Dalby, a local charity.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. 2. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use

about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time - allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season.

Roasting the turkey in a ’tent’ of buttered foil will keep it moist and succulent. Always allow time for the cooked bird to rest in a warm place before carving. INGREDIENTS • 100g butter • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 leek, trimmed and chopped • 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped • 75g ready to eat dried apricots, finely chopped • 150g fresh white breadcrumbs • 100g cooked chestnuts, finely chopped

Uncover the turkey for the last 45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in 4. aLeave warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes.

Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time as the bacon-wrapped sausages for 20 minutes.

Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter 5. with the bacon-wrapped sausages and

TIP 1.

Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool.

Festive Fun in York

I

have called York my home for almost a decade, and though I was not born here, I truly think of myself as a local. So it is a real pleasure for me to write my first Handy Mag column, dedicated solely to our lovely city. Each month I will bring you a roundup of York-based issues and activities, and with Christmas a stone’s throw away, what better way to begin than with some festive frolics? Sneaky December has crept up on us, the temperature has dropped, and our trees have shed their colourful leaves. Just weeks before the Big Day, the community is alive with Yuletide cheer, because York’s diverse social calendar is about to reach its prime. In the next few weeks, with special thanks to St. Nicholas’ Fair, thousands of visitors will flock to our streets. So make sure you

by Jen Grimble

don your winter-warmers, join the bustling crowds, and celebrate Christmas the York way. From ice skating at Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, to Betty’s warm mince pie’s, York’s festive count-down has something to offer everyone. For starters, choirs are in abundance this December, with York Minster, The Barbican and even Castle Howard bringing us singalong carols by candlelight. Simply Magic! We all know Christmas would not be the same without pantomime season, and this year, York is offering four very different shows to interest all ages. Most notably, theatre legend Berwick Kaler returns with a rather chaotic adaptation of Old Mother Goose, running from mid-December until the end of January. Kaler’s family adventures are always hilarious enough to make even the grumpiest Scrooge smile! After all the fun, it is worth spending

YORK • DECEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 107 some time in peaceful reflection and the very special ‘Candles on the Ouse’ event is perhaps the best way to do so. On 4th December, in celebration of their 30th Birthday, St. Leonard’s Hospice will release hundreds of paper candles down the River Ouse. The candles will represent past and present loved ones, from throughout the community. I for one cannot think of a better way to raise funds for such an essential local charity. This breath-taking event is sure to be the icing on York’s rather wonderful Christmas cake. So, from pantomime baddies to curling up with a classic Christmas movie, let’s make December another unforgettable month. Peaches and avocados have toxic stones, It goes without saying not to feed bones. Pets could choke or the bones could crack. Causing internal punctures because of a snack. Currents are toxic and in christmas cake Fat turkey skin will cause stomach ache Fatal foods like onion, garlic and leeks, Cause anaemia if untreated, in following weeks. Gravy’s unsuitable- it has too much salt. Pets will drink more-it will be your fault! Like over-eating, it can lead to bloat. A potentially fatal condition, please note! Ponsiettas, amyrillis, holly and misteltoe. Are just a few of the poisonous plants that I know; Chocolate, alcohol, nuts, and mince. Pies, Mushrooms as well can cause pets to die. Swallowed ribbons and paper tangle the guts. Biting baubles can lead to horrible cuts; Christmas trees appear to be fine, But paws can be hurt by needles of pine. As it gets darker on cold winter nights. It’s tempting to turn on your Christmas lights. Your pets, intrigued, may chew through the wire Shocking themselves or starting a fire. IVY IS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME BEFORE CHRISTMAS! This fabulous looking cat is Ivy, currently residing at York Cats Protection Adoption Centre. With her wonderful fluffy coat you would expect her to have been snapped up by a new owner by now, but sadly this cheerful young lady is still in our care after nearly 4 months. Ivy was originally brought to us after she had been found wandering the streets, living the lonely life of a stray. After living off scraps and hand outs Ivy was very pleased to find herself in a cosy bed at the Centre - with the promise of two tasty meals every day, and best of all lots of attention! Ivy is a super little cat who adores being stroked and fussed and loves being the centre of attention. So why has she been in the Centre for such a long time? Well sadly it’s the usual story of people not wanting to adopt black cats, and poor moggies like

Ivy tend to be overlooked in favour of their more colourful cousins. Ivy would make a great addition to most households, all she needs is for someone to look past her coat colour and take the time to get to know her – we’re pretty sure that once you’ve spent a few moments in her company Ivy will steal your heart and you’ll have a best friend for life. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@ cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. TOP 5 SPORTS CARS By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMagazine.co.uk)

M

ost people spend all their lives dreaming of owning a sports car – but for a lucky few that dream can sometimes become a reality. After years spent gazing longingly at every Ferrari and Porsche that drives by, finally strolling into a dealership to shell out on one for yourself can be a life-changing event. But when you’ve spent years scrimping and saving to own one, when the time comes to choose which one to put your money down on, the decision can be rather tricky to make. Here we’ve tried to help by picking the top five you might want to consider.

FERRARI 458 ITALIA

Price: From £178,526 If it’s a Ferrari you’re after there really is only one you should be considering – and that’s this, the 458 Italia. Not only does it have looks that can kill from 100 paces, but it has an incredible 4.5-litre 562bhp V8 engine, a top speed of 202mph and can hit 60mph in a brain-melting 3.2 seconds. There’s no wonder many consider this to be the motoring nirvana.

PORSCHE 911

Price: From £73,509 Practicality isn’t generally high up on the agenda when buying a sports car, but with four seats in a Porsche 911 you might just be able to convince your better half that’s it’s the perfect family car. Ok, who are we kidding, that’s never going to happen,

better then to focus on the fabulous flat-six engines and incredible handling. The 911 has been the definitive go-to sports car for generations and the latest “991” model is no different. Well worth a look.

JAGUAR F-TYPE COUPE

Price: From £85,000 It took three decades for Jaguar to finally build a successor to its legendary E-Type – but the wait was worth it. The F-Type, which comes in soft-top and coupe guises, is not only stunning, but brilliant to drive too. There are three versions available: V6, V6S and V8S. We’d opt for the latter which combines a glorious exhaust note with stonking performance from the 542bhp 5.0-litre V8.

LOTUS EXIGE S

Price: From £54,235 Let’s forget luxury for a minute and just go for something a little bit bonkers and a lot of fun. The Lotus Exige S covers all that. It doesn’t have leather, in fact you’re lucky to get a radio, but this

TOYOTA GT86

says “If we are unable to repair the puncture due to serious damage we can source new tyres quickly, and we don’t charge for call out. Try to avoid driving on any tyre that has punctured and gone flat as this will destroy a tyre that otherwise may have been repairable.”

SHORT STORY THE LAST PRESENT by Jackie Brewster

“I’ll lock up while you get the first round in”, Trevor told Barry, scratching his beard. “Aren’t we changing out of our work clothes?” Barry said. “Not tonight”. This was his Christmas Eve ritual, the pub regulars expected it. Once Santa and his elf arrived at the bar everyone knew Christmas had finally arrived. Trevor had been the Santa at the precinct grotto for years. The kids he’d once bounced on his knee now brought their own kids to tell Santa what a good little boy or girl they’d been. “Busy year”, Trevor said, “there’s only one present left, we were cutting that a bit fine”. “What’ll happen to it?” Barry asked. He was new to the elf game, slightly scatterbrained, but good with crowd management Trevor thought. “It’ll go in storage until next year”. The grotto was no more than a shed decorated with tinsel, but for the last ten days over-excited kids had been queuing out the door.

“Listen lad, don’t cry”. He crouched down, “tell me, have you been a good boy this year?” The boy nodded uncertainly. Trevor chuckled. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out all his loose change. “Here, find yourself something nice with this”. The boy held out his hand and grinned, “Thanks Santa”. Trevor stood up slowly, his old knees ached. “Happy Christmas”. He waved, and headed towards the pub. There was a cheer from the regulars as he walked in. Barry was standing at the crowded bar looking sheepish. “Where’s my pint?” Trevor said.

“Off you trot now, mine’s a pint”, Trevor said switching off the lights.

“I left my wallet at the grotto”, Barry said. “There’s no pockets in these tights”.

Left to himself, Trevor locked the door and dropped the key in his coat pocket. A job well done he thought. As he turned to go he felt something pulling on coat.

“We’d better nip back for it”, Trevor sighed, “I’ve got the key here”.

“Excuse me Santa is the grotto still open?” a young lad said. He was just a scrap of a thing, Trevor nearly tripped over him. “Sorry lad, we’ve shut up shop”. The boy’s bottom lip began to wobble. “But I wanted to see Santa”. The boy whimpered. Just what I need, thought Trevor, a blubberer on Christmas Eve. “Well, you’re seeing me now aren’t you?”. Trevor said and ruffled the boy’s hair. “And get a present”, the boy added. “Well you should’ve come earlier”, Trevor said gruffly. It was more than his job’s worth to let the lad into the grotto without his elf present; health and safety and all that. “I did, but your elf said I had to pay and I didn’t have any money”, the boy said rubbing his eyes. Trevor softened. Poor kid. 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

He dug his hand into his pocket, and knew straight away what he’d done. The pocket was empty. “I’ve dropped a real clanger”. He groaned and bundled Barry out of the pub. The boss would have his guts for garters for this. “Oh no!” Barry gasped as they reached the grotto. Trevor was afraid to look. “You’ve left the key in the door”. Barry panted. “Did I?” Trevor could breathe again, “Must have been distracted by that kid.” He scanned inside the shed as Barry retrieved his wallet from behind the inflatable Rudolph. “No harm done”. He smiled, putting the key safely back in his pocket. He was ready for that pint. It was lucky, he thought, that his elf hadn’t noticed the pile of small change where the last present used to be.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING

I’M DREAMING OF A GREEN CHRISTMAS by Pippa Greenwood

I

love giving presents, but only when I think that the recipient will really enjoy receiving it - whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, I’m sure you’ll know more than a few gardeners so here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive.

With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive.

If you know a newish gardener or someone who has recently taken on a garden then the basic garden tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug and who’d appreciate a helping hand you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they

YORK • DECEMBER 2014 • ISSUE 107 want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www.pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, in asparagus beds or to tackle weeds within planters) try the hand held redhandled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. Small but always appreciated gifts could include a few packets of vegetable seeds. Although many garden centres are currently crammed full of tinselly, twinkly items for the festive season, most already have a good number of seeds in stock. Choose some particularly scrumptious varieties of vegetables or for those who are more concerned about looks than taste, how about some flamboyantly colourful flowers to brighten up their garden? If you want to spend a bit more and the person loves growing things from seed, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away.

Gardening gloves too are something that any gardener can always have more of. Particularly useful are some of the gauntlet style gloves which are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Totally practical, but gauntlets can make even a really unpleasant job so much easier – I even used mine to harvest holly for decorating the house last Christmas. Alternatively, there are many lower-priced types of gloves available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles to make sure that your hands don’t get too much of a beating while you are out in the garden. greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring. Many gardeners and non-gardeners alike love having birds in the garden. They not only help to keep certain pest numbers down, but they also add an extra charm to the garden environment. How about a peanut feeder, nest box or perhaps even a bird table; there are many designs available from the modern to the rustic. For the husband, wife or partner who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, give them a gentle nudge by gifting a brand new garden fork and spade; but if you feel that they really are beyond help, then admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or perhaps even a hammock? As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year. Finally, don’t forget the plants themselves. Garden centres are currently crammed full of a delightful

Does The Ghost Of Christmas Past Have A Future?

by Kate McLelland

T

imes are changing and it seems that many of the festive traditions that British people have enjoyed for hundreds - if not thousands – of years may not be around for much longer. Here are some Christmas customs that have either died out or evolved to suit our 21st century tastes:

THE HOLLY AND THE IVY

The practice of bringing fresh evergreen branches into our homes dates back to pre-Christian times and the belief that evergreen trees represented eternal life, rebirth and the coming spring. Christians later focused on the plants’ natural qualities, believing that the holly’s prickly leaves represented Christ’s crown of thorns and the red berries his spilt blood. The greenery may be gone from many houses, but it is not forgotten: modern decorations hark back to the shiny leaves and berries that once caught the firelight in our ancestors’ homes.

CAROLS ON YOUR DOORSTEP

Now it’s kids who bawl two lines of “Away in a Manger” before rattling their collection tin, but bands of carollers used to roam the streets at Christmas. In the pre-Christian era carols were simply boisterous folk songs sung at the midwinter festival. They became popular in medieval times but the Puritans imposed a total ban on carol singing in the 1640s. Forbidden to perform in church, strolling musicians and singers would knock on doors hoping for food, drink or money.

THE CHRISTMAS FEAST

In past times people mainly ate beef and goose at Christmas. Turkey was introduced in the 19th century when well off, middle class families realised this large bird was the perfect size to feed a family gathering. By the beginning of the 20th century turkey had become the festive meat of choice, but the dwindling 80 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

size of 21st century family gatherings may lead us back to eating smaller cuts of meat once more.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING

Although the traditional Christmas pudding is still popular, there may come a time when chocolate bombes, profiteroles and trifles shoulder out the humble pud. This rich, spicy and fruity pudding originated in the 14th century as a pre-Christmas fasting meal made out of porridge, meat and raisins, with the consistency of soup. Ingredients such as flour and eggs were added over the years until the recipe evolved into the dessert we know today. Small silver “charms” were once added to the mixture: a silver coin to bring wealth to the recipient, a silver thimble for thrift, a wishbone for luck and an anchor to symbolise “safe harbour”.

PACKING THE PRESENTS

Once upon a time all that children could expect when Father Christmas called was a stocking filled with nuts, fruit, sweets and handmade trinkets but our desire for bigger and better gifts eventually led us to use pillowcases rather than stockings. We now spend an average of around £30 on each present, forcing us to buy large, purpose-made sacks for gifts or put them under the tree. While historical records show that over the past 100 years our festive traditions have changed more rapidly than ever before, it’s important to realise that this is just an acceleration of an evolutionary process begun in ancient times. Historians may mourn the loss of our old traditions but it’s clear that, even though some of the customs and rituals have changed, our love of Christmas itself remains just as strong as ever.

isitors to one of York’s most striking art deco buildings, the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Haxby Road, will be able to see more of the architecture even when daylight has faded, thanks to the installation of a new lighting and signage scheme. The striking lettering on the brickwork is very much in keeping with the original design style of the building, and is complemented by illuminated theatre lights on top of the poster boards at the entrance to the driveway, making York’s hidden gem of a theatre a little less hidden! “Part of this theatre’s charm is the distinctive style of the building, which regularly attracts visitors as enthusiastic about the architecture as they are about the shows being staged here, so it was important that we kept the new signage very much along the same

The improvements have been funded through the operational surplus of the theatre and through various fundraising activities over the past few years. This has been a major undertaking for the charitable trust which runs the Grade 2 listed building, as the theatre receives no external funding for any of its operations, and ploughs all profits back into the upkeep and improvement of its facilities. The new lighting and signage has been supported by architects PPIY, contractors JMark Construction and Listers Electrical, and signmakers Harrisons Signs. Joseph Rowntree Theatre is run entirely by volunteers, and indeed, is currently recruiting for new trustees and board members to deal with the increasing number of bookings that the theatre receives. The theatre is hosting two informal opportunities for potential candidates to meet other trustees: Saturday 8 November and Saturday 15 November at 10.00am. For more information on volunteering at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, please contact Dan Shrimpton on 07511 123659 or visit jrtheatre. co.uk/vacancies
