elcome to December! Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Here at Handy Mag HQ, our December editions are packed with carol services, Christmas community events and local business details. We firmly believe in ‘shopping locally’ and using local traders for our festive preparations supporting them is always top of our Christmas list! The Handy Mag team are getting ready for the big day: Nicky, who collates our special events, is busy getting into the Christmas spirit with her family, and wondering what Santa will bring this year. My daughter returns home from University so it will be nice to have the family together again for the festive celebrations. No doubt the dogs will need a bit of extra exercise as I’m sure there’ll be

doggy treats galore! Our new member of staff, Faith, will spend her first Christmas with the Handy Mag team and will see how busy the office gets at this time of year. Faith has now been with us just over three months, and looks forward seeing how it ‘fits together’ when the new editions are printed. Lots of Christmas events are taking place in the area, including the Christmas Carol Service at All Saints Church in Huntington (pictured on our cover) on 16th December. Christmas can be a thoughtful time of year particularly if you’ve lost someone close to you, so why not attend one of the annual St Leonard’s Hospice Light Up A Life services? More details on page 32. On a final note, well done to the October competition winner, Mrs Reed of York, who won afternoon tea at Cakes Delicious. We wish you a very Happy Christmas! Until next time,
Marianne

GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFTS Buying a book for someone can be a bit of a minefield… Will they enjoy it? Do they already have a copy? Will you be able to borrow it? Hopefully our top picks of recent releases will help you to navigate that minefield and get you on Santa’s good side.
Faber Poetry Diary 2016 –
Various This is one of those books that you get given one year, and then find yourself buying as a gift for years to come. A week-to-view diary that offers a poem or illustration for each week, the Faber Poetry Diary makes Monday mornings just that bit more enjoyable. The 2016 version includes a wide variety of poets, from Simon Armitage to Wendy Cope, via Dylan Thomas, Alice Oswald, Sylvia Plath and a whole lot more.
Everyday Super Food –
Jamie Oliver No present list would be complete without at least one cookery book, and Jamie Oliver seems to be a favourite with everyone from wannabee Junior Masterchefs to seasoned bakers. With Everyday
Super Food, Jamie is making it his mission to prove that low-calorie, nutritious meals can still be pretty darn delicious. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are all covered and there’s something to tempt most taste buds, from spicy ‘Energy Balls’ to ‘Super Tasty Miso Broth’ and ‘Harissa Roasted Aubergine’.
The Lake House – Kate Morton
It’s 1933 and a missing child throws the privileged Edevane family into a downward spiral. Fast forward seventy years and the child’s older sister, Alice, finds herself re-opening old wounds when a police detective starts asking questions about the unsolved case. A real page-turner, this is the kind of book you want to curl up and disappear into on Boxing Day. (It’s also a great one to give as a gift in the understanding that you get to read it once the recipient has finished with it.)
Is your conservatory TOO COLD to use this winter? An insulated ceiling from Inceil will transform your conservatory so it is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer - so you can enjoy your conservatory all year round. Affordable, effective and fitted in just 2 days

Warm Living from Focus Fireplaces & Stoves
E
ven now in modern times the fireplace is still the central point in the room. We still like the idea of heat and an appealing focal point. We talk to all sorts of people from so many different areas and all sorts of styles of home. The one thing that is always said, even in modern homes is: “we love a fireplace”. It’s strange if one is not there, and when it comes to planning a rooms décor, it is difficult to work out the layout without one. Fashions come and go, even in fireplaces. We have noticed over the years the popularity of stoves, they don’t always suit every lifestyle or flue. However, the choice and range of imitation stoves has increased both in gas and electric. So, regardless of your preferred fuel choice, there’s a stove just for you. Customers love the care and attention that Focus give them, from start to finish. The advantages of having our own in house fitting and experienced sales staff allows us to control and deliver the high standards we expect from ourselves. Our installation team are both HETAS and Gas Safe registered.
The showroom has over 60 displays covering all styles of fireplaces and stoves. We cater for open fires, gas or electric and can guide you through the maze of technical pitfalls that fires and fireplaces so often bring to light. We are open 6 days a week. So come and visit are beautiful showroom, easy parking and only 10 minutes away from Monks Cross shopping centre. Focus Fireplaces & Stoves, The Bull Comm Centre, Stockton Lane, York, YO32 9LE. TOP ROYAL AWARD
FOR WIGGINTON COMMUNITY GROUP
A
s one of just 6 North Yorkshire based community groups to be presented with The Duke of York’s Community Initiative, Churchfield Open Space Committee, Wigginton is described by DoYCI assessors as “truly remarkable”.
Presented annually to organisations who are seen to be making a very real difference to the communities they serve the award will be given out to a total of 34 different groups by HRH The Duke of York at a ceremony to be held in the New Year.
That’s because unlike most public playgrounds and open spaces which are installed, managed, maintained and run by local councils, Churchfield operates as a completely separate and independently constituted body.
Speaking of the award Richard Denton Chairman of COSC says “It is really wonderful to be honoured with this award, it recognises the support and encouragement the local residents give in developing our open space and proves that community spirit thrives in our village”.
Made up of hard working volunteers whose sole aim is to provide the best possible open space facilities for the community the project’s team take total responsibility for overseeing the 3.5 acre site.
The Duke of York’s Community Initiative is open to local charities and community groups from across the whole of Yorkshire. More details can be found at www.thedukeofyorkscommunityinitiative.org.uk

HOW TO SOLVE YOUR INHERITANCE TAX PROBLEM WITHOUT GIVING ANYTHING AWAY More than £4 billion is collected by the Tax Man every year in Inheritance Tax (IHT). There’s been some form of death duty in the UK for thousands of years. The general idea is that this kind of tax attempts to redistribute wealth stopping the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. The theory is that some of the money goes to the state and gets distributed for the benefit of all. THE MECHANICS Everyone gets an allowance they don’t pay IHT on. The current allowance is £325,000. This means if your house, car, cash, savings and investments – everything you own on death – are worth less than £325,000 when you die, there’ll be no tax to pay. Anything above that limit is taxed at 40%. This means that if you are worth, say, £600,000 when you die, your heirs will get a tax bill
of £110,000. From 2021, an additional £175,000 allowance is available for those passing on family homes to direct descendants.
FREE CLAIM YOUR COPY NOW
TAX COMES FIRST The tax generally has to be paid within 6 months of death – before your heirs can even inherit their share. CONTROVERSIAL People have widely differing views on Inheritance Tax. Some agree that it is fair to redistribute wealth on death. Others think that what they have accumulated through their own hard work should go to their family and not the tax man. Particularly when they think the Government wastes taxpayers money on ill-fated schemes and endless quangos and jobs for the boys. Whatever your views, IHT could clearly have a huge impact on your family’s future. After all, if you’ve been smart with money all your life you might not
Legal ways to reduce your IHT
EXCLUSIVE READER want to lose a chunk of it when you die. If so, you need to arm yourself with the facts before you can make sensible decisions. A VOLUNTARY TAX The late Roy Jenkins, MP, said Inheritance Tax is a voluntary levy paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue. That’s because there are things you can do to soften the blow for your family or
even avoid IHT altogether. EASY TO READ GUIDE The most important thing is to figure out if you’ve got a problem and if you want to do anything about it. This little book will help you do just that. TAX ON PROPERTY INCOME PART 3
Y
ou may have to pay capital gains tax (CGT) at up to 28% when you sell your investment property for a profit, i.e. more than you paid for it. Although there are a number of reliefs which are available that can reduce this.
Annual Exemption
The most basic way of reducing you tax bill is by using your annual tax free exemption. Currently, you don’t pay capital gains tax on the first £11,100 of gains. If you own and sell a property jointly, for example with your partner, you each get an annual exemption.
Principle Private Residence Relief
Principle Private Residence Relief (or PPR Relief) ensures that people don’t have to pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the sale of their private house or residence. If you sell a property which you don’t currently live in, but was once your main residence, you can claim PPR Relief for the period in which you did live in it, meaning you don’t pay CGT for this period. For example, if you sold a property for £150,000, which cost you £100,000, there is a gain of £50,000. If you owned the property for 10 years and lived in it for 4 of those years, you could claim PPR Relief for that period, meaning you wouldn’t pay tax on 4/10 of the £50,000 gain (i.e. £20,000).
Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants
Currently, HMRC also allow additional “bonus” PPR Relief on gains made in the final 18 months of ownership, irrespective of whether it was your main residence or rented out in those final 18 months. If you buy a second property, it is possible to choose which one is your private residence for tax purposes by notifying HMRC (making an election) within 2 years of purchasing the property. HMRC have indicated that this relief is being abused (not just my MPs!) and have started to challenge elections previously made and accepted.
Private Lettings Relief
If only a part of the gain on the sale of a property is covered by PPR Relief, and the remainder of the gain relates to periods when the property was rented out, Private Lettings Relief (PLR) can be claimed to reduce the remaining gain. The amount of relief available is restricted to the lower of either: the amount of PPR Relief; the gains for the period the property was let; or £40,000 Tax payable on the sale of property can be a complex area, especially as each case tends to be different and the reliefs available vary.

Everyone welcome, no need to book - and free! We ask though, that anyone wanting to come, would bring a small new toy to give to the children on the children’s ward at York Hospital - that’s the twist! Children who visit Santa will, of course, also receive a small (edible) gift when they visit. Please come and help us to spread the Christmas spirit to children in hospital!

THE FESTIVE SEASON By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637
A
s we come into December we will all be getting ready for Christmas and a very busy time of year. Whilst for the vast majority it will be a very happy time there will be criminals who will be out and about during the festive season looking to ruin your Christmas. In previous articles we have spoken about the importance of keeping your homes secure and to deter burglary. At this time of year this is even more important as there will be many expensive gifts within your home that will tempt a burglar and the evenings will be dark. Remember to keep doors and windows locked, do not leave valuables on display and leave a light on within your property when you are out.
Christmas should be a happy time for us all, just take a few moments to consider your own personal safety at this time of year so that this festive season is memorable for all the right reasons and not because you became a victim of crime. As always should you need to contact your local Neighbourhood Police Team you can contact us via 101, twitter or by e mail. Happy Christmas to you all.

Most of us will be out at some point in December with friends and family, and many of us may well drink a little more than usual. This can make you vulnerable to opportunistic criminals. Try to stay in groups, do not walk home alone and keep yourself safe. A lone person under the influence of alcohol would be a target for many criminals. A taxi home may cost you some money but it is far preferable to becoming a victim of crime. Whilst a night out can be expensive do not carry more cash than you need. There are a huge number of cash points within the City Centre that you can use to withdraw more cash should you need it. Remember when you are using the cash machine to be aware of people around you as well. Always cover your pin number and if there is anything about the machine itself that looks out 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Filling yourself up first this Christmas
I
s it just me? I’m a working Mum of 2 boys who are always hungry. I juggle my To Do List like a maniac on top of all the extra jobs I have to do to prepare for Christmas, just so that I can have some “family time” on my days off? Then your body gives you a cold the minute you sit down and rest. Arrgh! But I’m lucky, some of my divorced friends find Christmas a lonely time, whilst others fear the inevitable family arguments. Why do we do this every year? We only have one life after all, so shouldn’t we make the most of every day? Well, let me share a way I have found to succeed with ease and have the life I really want… Damsels in Success are a group of like minded business women who come together and share ways to do everyday things differently, reawaken our dreams then make them happen. Meeting each month to talk about what we really want, what’s getting in our way and sharing great tips, we laugh about our mishaps, leaving with energy and actionable ideas to tackle work differently, have family conversations without being grumpy or distracted and even create time for us. by Sue Jefferson Isn’t it time you deserved to feel like a Damsel in Success every day?
Today’s Tip
Gift Cards available from £20 - £500 which be redeemed on any of the treatments on offer at Redmayne Lodge
Don’t assume, but talk to your family together about what each person really wants to do over the festive period. Even if you can’t do them all, you may be surprised it’s not what you thought. Turns out, I’m the only one wanting lots of “experiences” but my younger son would simply like us to play board games especially Monopoly.

shapely firs. Your ideal tree will be there somewhere! At Dalby we offer so much more than just buying a tree, with a Santa’s grotto and whole range of activities for both little and big kids to get into the festive spirit!
Why should I buy a real Christmas tree from the Forestry Commission? The Forestry Commission only sells trees that are grown in a sustainable manner in the UK - for every tree harvested another is replanted.
Where are our Christmas trees grown? The trees sold at Dalby Forest are grown sustainably in the forest and travel less than 5 miles from the growing site. The trees are harvested between 6 and 10 years old and for every tree felled at least one is planted.
Environmental factors are considered carefully. The Forestry Commission endeavours to provide excellent quality trees, with good needle retention, in a range of species including the traditional Norway spruce, dense, bushy pines and 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
What species of trees are sold as Christmas trees? Norway Spruce - the traditional Christmas tree - has a mid-green colour, a fine, delicate foliage and a distinctive ‘Christmassy’ scent. Nordmann Fir - has distinctive
broad, bold green needles with whitish underside. Lodgepole Pine - a cheerful green colour, tinged slightly with yellow, and a sharp fragrance. How do you keep real Christmas trees looking good? 1. Store in a cool place before bringing indoors 2. Keep away from direct heat 3. Cut half an inch off the stump and stand in a container full of water 4. Water regularly - a Christmas tree can ‘drink’ up to a pint of water a day Where to find out more; www.forestry.gov.uk/christmas www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest

ORTHODONTICS PART 2
W
hen and where is the best time for your child to have an orthodontic assessment?
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
This is a very contentious subject amongst general dentists, parents and orthodontists, most parents would like their child attended to as soon as possible, especially if they are being teased about their smile. About 20 years ago there was process called ’serial extraction’ where the child had several visits to the dentist and as the teeth became crowded they were removed. In reality this did little to improve the final outcome of treatment for the poor child as it was found to encourage the early eruption of the new teeth and thus compound the problem. This however may be the experience of many parents who now have young children themselves so they expect a similar process for their child. Today there is a trend to try to avoid extraction and wait and see how much space nature is going to provide. As dentists we are supposed to refer when the child has lost all of their baby teeth as the orthodontists book becomes jammed with patient who are too young to treat otherwise. Sometimes where it is glaringly obvious that there is never going to be enough room an earlier referral may be made. Patient may also seek a consultation on a private basis. NHS (free) orthodontics is only available to those children with more serious need where there is a functional problem stopping the teeth meeting properly with or without the appearance of the teeth being compromised. Where your child has a slightly twisted front tooth or irregularity they are unlikely to be seen as appropriate for NHS treatment. Your own dentist should be able to score them against an International Index of need and give you an idea if they will need to be seen privately or by the NHS. Again treatment is rarely provided if the brushing is poor or there is a recent history of decay.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SHORT STORY WAKING UP TO WHEEZY by Jackie Brewster
“Daffers, come quick!” Barry called from the front garden. “It’s happened again.” Daphne sighed and lifted the cat off her lap. Snow was falling in soft fat flakes and she had no desire to go outside. Anyway, she could guess what this was all about. Ever since Barry had bought that eight foot inflatable snowman from a car boot sale there’d been nothing but trouble. Why couldn’t he just have put up some festive outdoor lights like everyone else? She slowly changed out of her slippers and wrapped a thick scarf round her neck. Through the hall window she could see Barry pacing up and down the drive. She could also see that the space next to the cherry tree where the snowman usually stooped - it couldn’t stand upright because it had several slow punctures - was empty. “Oh good, you’re here,” Barry said, his hot breath turning to clouds of mist in the air, “it’s sabotage, that’s what it is.” “What is dear?” Daphne asked innocently. “Just look,” he said, pointing at the garage door. Someone had arranged Wheezy (for that’s what she privately called the snowman) so that it was pinned beneath the garage door, half in and half out of the garage. She covered her mouth quickly with her hand. “I suppose that’s someone’s idea of a joke?” Barry said angrily. “I mean, how did they even get the garage door open?” “It’s probably teenagers,” she said calmly. “You know how creative they can be.” 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Yesterday morning they had found Wheezy perched on the garden wall in the lotus position, and the night before someone had gaffer taped its hands so it looked like it was clinging to the guttering above the lounge window. “I’ve a good mind to call the police,” Barry said, pulling open the garage door. “Oh, really?” Daphne had been waiting for this. “And what do you expect them to do about it? Round the clock surveillance?” “I could install CCTV,” Barry mumbled. “It’s hardly worth it dear,” she said quickly, “just for a cheap snowman with a sinister grin, who looks like he’s had a fight with a puncture repair kit.”
“I shall have to pump some more air in him,” Barry said, trying, and failing to make the snowman stand up straight.
Wheezy did have a strange expression. After Barry got it home he attempted to clean it up with white spirit, which had only resulted in smearing the paintwork on the snowman’s face. Now its mouth seemed to grimace. The neighbours had complained that it frightened their kids.
“Why don’t we simply move him out of harm’s way?” Daphne said finally.
“You’re a light sleeper, didn’t you hear anything?” Barry asked.
“No. I mean in the back garden,” she suggested hopefully, “maybe behind the shed?”
“Only the sound of hot air escaping,” Daphne said under her breath. Barry dragged the collapsing snowman back into its position by the cherry tree. “Since we’ve had the snowman,” he said, propping it awkwardly against the trunk, “I’ve noticed that this neighbourhood has really started to go downhill.” Daphne bit her cheek and looked away.
“Do you mean into the lounge?” Barry asked. “Looking out of the window?” Daphne shuddered at the very idea.
“But no one will see him there,” Barry said, “he’s for the whole street to enjoy.” He ducked into the garage to find the foot pump. Daphne sighed. It seemed the snowman would be terrifying the local residents for another night. But Daphne was a woman of quiet invention. She had plenty more adventures for Wheezy up her sleeve.

round the start of September every year the dreaded ‘list’ comes out. This is no mere shopping list, rather it’s a dossier detailing every Christmas present and card we need to buy, when and where it must be delivered and what people were given previously (for cross-referencing purposes). Several weeks of impromptu shopping trips, and constant discussions about what to get for whom, are endured to allow the festive season to be enjoyed with less stress. This level of military precision may seem excessive, but if it helps avoid the chaos of dragging the kids on a last minute shopping expedition, it’s definitely worthwhile. It is such a popular time in our household that December has been dubbed “Christmas month”. The tree and decorations go up at the first opportunity, we dust off the Michael Bublé Christmas CD, and everything becomes a bit more sparkly. I’m convinced my other half gets more excited than our two young girls. Around this point normal parenting rules go out of the window. Chocolate at breakfast every day becomes normal and there is a procession of parties and events to attend. The children are gradually wound up into a state of near frenzy. The poor creatures, full of sugar and near bursting with excitement, suddenly find any misbehaviour is met with the phrase; “Santa won’t come if you’re naughty”. After weeks of preparation, anticipation and more mince pies than is healthy, we’re finally ready. The presents have been wrapped and I have excelled in my role on sticky duty. Once the big day arrives we invariably find that Santa has been after all. The rest of the day has an inevitable sense of anticlimax after such a build up, but it’s actually a relief as everyone is finally able to unwind (and overindulge). No doubt we’ll do just the same again next year. Now, I must get back to writing Christmas cards. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 65
YORK CATS PROTECTION IS CURRENTLY RUNNING A £5 NEUTERING CAMPAIGN.
The scheme is open to anyone on state benefits or a low income and runs until 12th December. Neutering offers solid benefits to both male and female cats including:
• Neutered females cannot become pregnant, adding to the number of unwanted kittens. Left unneutered, a female cat can have up to 18 kittens a year. • Neutered males are less likely to roam, reducing the risk of them being involved in car accidents • Neutering means males are less likely to display territorial behaviour such as spraying, while females will not call or wail. • Neutered males are less likely to fight, reducing the risk of them getting injured or contracting serious diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) Cats Protection believes neutering is an essential part of responsible cat ownership and helps neuter 163,000 cats and kittens each year. The charity recommends that cats and kittens are neutered from around four months of age.
Please call the York Adoption Centre on 01904 760356 for more details on eligibility and how to obtain a voucher. 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Vincent came to us as a long term stray, this poor lad had been living rough for quite some time. He was a little scared when he first arrived but now he has settled in he is ever so friendly and enjoys a fuss. He would make a great pet for a family with older children. Lola’s owner moved house and couldn’t take her with them so she is now looking for a new home to call her own. She would prefer a home with a yard or garden as she enjoys going outside and can use a catflap to come and go as she pleases. She needs an adult only, experienced home.
COME TO OUR CHRISTMAS FAIR! We will be holding our annual Christmas Fair at the animal home on Landing Lane on Sunday 6th December from 11am to 3:30pm. There will be lots of stalls, games and raffles including Everyone’s a Winner, and also teas, coffees and homemade cakes. Entry is £1 for adults, children free and all proceeds go to support the York animal home - we’d love to see you there!

CHRISTMAS HAZARDS by Lucy Nowell MRCVS Station House Vets
Christmas can be a busy and chaotic time in our homes with large quantities of food and presents left unattended (or sneaked to our pets by well meaning visitors!).
TOXIC FOODS: CHOCOLATE Chocolate contains theobromine which can cause hyperexcitability, tremours, convulsions and problems with the heart in dogs. The risk is greater the higher the cocoa content and consumption of even a small amount of dark chocolate is potentially toxic. Pets are unlikely to unwrap the chocolate and though wrappers aren’t generally toxic, they could cause a blockage in the gut. GRAPES AND DRIED VINE FRUIT Grapes and their dried products are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small amount can cause kidney failure. Remember they are a component of many seasonal foods like christmas pudding, cake and mince pies as well as in various chocolates! ONIONS Onions, leeks, shallots and chives can cause toxicity even when cooked. They can cause vomiting and diarrhoea but also damage to red blood cells causing anaemia, which may not be seen until several days later. So no sage and onion stuffing please! LEFTOVERS Please be careful where you leave your christmas dinner remnants (and make sure nobody can raid the bin!) Cooked poultry bones can splinter and cause injury and obstructions in the gut. Mouldy foods including cheese and bread can release toxins that are harmful to dogs. CHRISTMAS PLANTS Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe, Ivy. Ingestion of parts of these plants by pets may cause gastrointestinal upset and irritation of the mouth causing salivation. CHRISTMAS TREE Ingestion could cause a tummy upset or more likely discomfort from the sharpness of the needles! 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
CHRISTMAS GIFTS: SILICA GEL Often in a small sachet in the packaging of shoes, handbags with the label ‘do not eat’ – this is considered low toxicity! CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Not necessarily toxic but could cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract, just consider hanging them out of reach including tinsel ! POT POURRI This can cause considerable tummy upset in dogs that can last several days, and the result may not be fragrant! If you are worried that your pet may have eaten any of the above please call for advice. Prompt treatment can be very effective. One last thing – make sure your pets have got somewhere quiet to hang out if it all gets a bit busy, cats and older dogs may appreciate a bit of peace (as may you actually!)

GARDENING
Growing Fruit Trees by Pippa Greenwood spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires.
For the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sun-warmed - so grow your own and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees… You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small
Experienced company based in Strensall. INSURED TO 5 MILLION
You could also train fruits like apples to make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm above ground level (called ‘step-overs’). A step-over apple grows to a height of about 30cm and is trained to forms two horizontal ‘arms’, which will bear a smallish crop of fruit. Try step-overs around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed. To make a real feature of fruit, use a tree to create a decorative and productive arch. Buy an inexpensive bare root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check >>

>> with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look pretty when in blossom in spring and will bear tasty fruit too. Provided you get the right rootstock (see below), you can grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be big - a half-barrel at least - and have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 25-50% multipurpose loam-free compost. It is essential to choose fruit trees on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing M27 - though weak varieties may fail in poor soil or if not well pampered. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You can buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them
yourself or you can buy trained or part-trained trees. Make sure you choose varieties that flower at the same time so that they pollinate each other and thus provide fruit. Ask your supplier which ‘pollination group’ each variety is in. At this time of year you can buy inexpensive fruit trees sold ‘bare-root’, which means lifted from a field and not container grown; they also establish well. Bare-root fruit trees are generally available from about November until early March - so don’t delay, get ordering or planting today!
Perfect as a Christmas gift, make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. Gift cards are available too for this perfect present! It is great value and various pack sizes are available.
