elcome to the February edition. With the excitement of the New Year long gone and resolutions maybe not working out as they were intended, February can be the hardest month. Indeed, February is rich in excuses and temptation, with the nights still long, dark and damp making any and every evening in front of a warm fire, eating comfort food with woolly socks on so much easier. I often wonder on those brave people battling against all weathers, cycling or running up and down the Wolds about our village, and question why and marvel at their motivation! As with many I guess after the festive excesses, health and fitness are on my mind. I confess that the best I can usually do is some more vigorous dog walking and a deep dedication to never taking up jogging or wearing lycra. Walking the dogs is not a lot, and it would never impress the lycra-set, but small changes in what we do make a difference, and the hills of the Wolds become that little bit less challenging with some moderate application. And of course the dogs are super appreciative of an extra or longer walk. Not that they are in anyway understanding the motivation for my increased foot rate and erratic breathing along otherwise tranquil country lanes. Then there is always that rowing machine at home that my other half bought ‘the family’ last year – hmmm! So thoughtful!February is very much a month that can be seen as a pint glass half empty, but with the bulbs emerging and early flowers already out, spring is on the way and the year is still young enough to kick start any lagging conviction. Luckily, as always, we at the Handy Mag are on-hand with lots of local businesses and events in this month’s magazine at the ready to motivate and lessen the pain in making the year happen for you! Community events really get going this month after a short lull in January so have a look through our events listings as there is something for everyone. Well done to Yvonne Murphy for winning the December edition competition. Until next month…

A BRAVE NEW WORLD JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL TURNS THE END INTO A NEW BEGINNING

14 - 22 FEBRUARY 2015

W

ith the JORVIK Viking Festival’s 2014 theme exploring Ragnarok – the Viking apocalypse – organisers of the annual event in February 2015 will continue the story with the two survivors and an epic reboot of the original Norse legends, played out against the backdrop of historic York. “According to Norse mythology, time and the universe is cyclical, so even though we celebrated the end of the world with our Ragnarok theme last year, the whole cycle of life starts again for this year’s Festival with the two survivors of the apocalypse - Lif and Lifthrasir. Our storyline will take them right back to the origins of Norse mythology to revisit the oldest legends – including the first ever battle of the Norse gods!” explains festival director, Danielle Daglan. “Our 2014 Festival brought more visitors to York than ever before, so we are working hard to create an engaging theme for 2015 that will bring them back to the city!”

8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

This year’s festival opens on February 14 – Valentine’s Day – so the story of the two human survivors of Ragnorok will run throughout the event, picking up some more familiar characters from Norse mythology along the way. Exploring the romance of the characters, members of the public are invited to join their wedding celebrations on the evening of Saturday 14 February in a Viking banquet at the Merchant Taylor’s Hall. With Viking guests including errant bridesmaids, a rather opinionated mother-of-thebride and her unruly husband, and an outspoken best man, it will be clear why axes, shields and helmets might be required alongside the traditional wedding fare! Combat themed activities continue throughout the week, with a legendary combat arena within York’s Guildhall recreating some of the infamous battles between fire and ice giants, a retelling of the rise of Odin as the greatest god of all, and the annual search for Jorvik’s strongest Viking, this year guestjudged by the city’s contemporary Mr Universe and owner of Ebor Fitness, Stuart Garrington. Other highlights will include: • Literary events with talks and readings from authors including Jeremy Strong and Paul Atherton • Folk Festival at Barley Hall, with artists including Ruth Keggin and Ray Cooper • Poo Day! At Barley Hall (17 February), when younger visitors will explore how poo is one of the most exciting things

for an archaeologist to find, including making their own replica historic poo • Beowulf by Candlelight in St Helen’s Church – an atmospheric retelling of the classic myth by Peter Carrington-Porter – a sell-out which received rave reviews in the 2014 Festival. The grand finale event of the 2015 JORVIK Viking Festival, taking place on Saturday 21st February, sees a return to the Eye of York for a sound-and-light spectacular packed with drama and excitement. Keeping the ‘Brave New World’ theme, the event will restore the mythical timeline to the origins of Norse legend, when the spirits are awakened and the worlds are created, culminating with the first ever battle that changed Norse culture forever! Alongside the spectacular events featuring costumed re-enactors, experts in Viking archaeology from around the world will deliver a series of lectures and talks throughout the Festival, including Dr Soren Sindbaek and Dr Nanna Holm from Denmark with a fascinating insight into the discovery in September 2014 of a Viking age ring fortress from the reign of King Harald Bluetooth. The full Festival programme is now available to view online at www. jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk, where you can also book tickets for paidfor events, talks and concerts. You can also follow the latest news from the Festival, including exclusive insights into the lives of the Viking couple on twitter following #JORVIKVikingFest

5 TAX AVOIDANCE MYTHS EXPOSED

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Investing in an avoidance scheme that doesn’t work is illegal. Oh no it isn’t. It might not work and it might prove expensive but it’s not illegal. A scheme with an HMRC DOTAS number (Disclosure of Tax Avoidance Schemes) is approved. Don’t you believe it. HMRC dreamed up DOTAS to give them the heads up on emerging tax avoidance schemes. A reference number is no guarantee that the scheme is approved. Or will work.

any people worry about organising their affairs tax efficiently. Much of this is down to media nonsense that tax avoidance is illegal. Here, I expose five popular tax avoidance myths:

M

Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion are the same. I assumed everyone knew this. Tax Evasion (i.e. failing to declare something that’s taxable) is illegal. Tax avoidance – arranging your affairs within the law to pay as little tax as possible is not only legal but perfectly sensible. Who would purposefully pay more tax than necessary? But most of you do.

Tax avoidance is illegal. No it’s not. Many tax avoidance strategies are not only approved by the Government, but were designed by them to encourage investment.

So you can carry on contributing to the estimated £4.7 billion UK taxpayers waste every year. Or you can get a grip and start making your money work for you.

A transaction designed only to avoid tax is illegal. Wrong. Pension Schemes, ISAs, Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts are all designed to avoid tax and all are perfectly legal.

EMILY... ON ROADS Being a learner driver is tough. Like many people do, when I got behind the wheel of a car I expected to be able to drive immediately. Having grown up with both of my parents driving me everywhere, I naively thought that I had almost subconsciously picked up the ability and that my lessons would simply be a refinement of my ‘skills’. My presumptions could not have been further from the truth. Five minutes into my first lesson, I stalled. Then, I stalled again. After two horrible minutes of me sitting in the middle of the road in a car that seemingly would not start, I had to swap seats with my instructor just so we could get going again. I had a lot to learn. Firstly, there is the cost of lessons. There was a time where learning to drive was a rite of passage, with teenagers starting to work towards their licence straight after their 17th birthday. In the news recently, a report claimed that the cost of getting a learner road ready, including insurance and a car, comes to a whopping £5000! This cost came as a shock to my Dad, who when he takes me out driving insists his teaching methods are better anyway. Typical! As our family car is a people carrier, my Dad instead takes me out in his van. Compared to this, my instructor’s car feels like a luxury to drive, with the absence of rattling tools and a stiff gear stick! There are many things that no amount of teaching can prepare you for. Driving in the dark terrified me at first, winding unlit country roads posing just as much of a hazard to learners in rural areas as things like traffic and busy junctions in big cities. This is only heightened in the winter months, when the weather adds to the dangerous road conditions. With all these things combined, I have only recently realised that learning to drive does not end at passing your test. Driving is about gaining experiences and applying things you have learnt already to different scenarios. As my practical exam comes ever nearer, I look forward to finally being able to take to the road independently as a fully qualified driver. Hopefully this time in my own little car, and not my Dad’s rattling old van! Emily

case just select option 2 when calling 101 and ask for the Officer by their collar number, eg 1 2 3 4 , and your call will be put through to their personal radio.

WHO DO YOU CALL? There is often some confusion as to which organisation you should call or even in some cases which phone number you should use to contact them. With the availability of email, Twitter and other social media sites now there are also other ways to contact people without even using a telephone. Everybody knows that to contact the Police or another Emergency Service that 999 is the emergency number. Despite numerous appeals to the public to only use this number in the case of an emergency it is still used on a number of calls that are far from an emergency. We would never discourage people from using the 999 service but would just stress that it is for emergencies only. If you genuinely believe that you need the Police with you immediately then this is the number to call but please use an alternative if your call is not urgent. The non emergency number for the Police is 101. This number will offer you several options and the option to report an incident will put you through to the same Control Room as a 999 call. The only difference between the two numbers is that you may have a short wait for your call to be answered when using 101. Should the staff in the Control Room believe that on listening to your call that it is an emergency then Officers will still be dispatched immediately from the use of the 101 number. This does happen particularly with calls from members of the public who state that they “don’t want to waste your time but…”. There is another option when calling 101 to speak to an individual Officer. It should be stressed that this is not an option to report a new incident but it is a good way to ask questions of your local officers or to request an update on an ongoing investigation. In this 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Police are not always the right people to call to try and solve a problem however. If you are a tenant of a Housing Association or similar it is often more appropriate to contact them direct as they have many powers to deal with anti social behaviour related to their properties. The Police will work with Housing Associations across the City to assist them where required. If you are experiencing problems with a noisy neighbour then the best people to contact are City of York Council on 01904 551555 and they can deal with these issues for you. If you are in any doubt as to who is best placed to assist you with your problem then if you see your local PCSO then we are always available to offer you advice as to the best person for you to contact. CHURCHFIELD OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE PHASE 1 HAS STARTED

O

n the 24th November last year, after 12 months of fundraising, work began on Churchfield Wigginton Play Area. Three old and worn out pieces of equipment were dismantled and removed, the aging timbers on the swings were replaced and a brand new Tower System was installed.

In late 2013 the committee responsible for managing the open space at Churchfield (COSC) realised that most of the play equipment needed replacing. Dating back to 1991 the swings, slides and climbing apparatus were rapidly deteriorating. After much research and consultation with local people it was decided to commission new equipment and at the same time bring the area up to date. The landscaping included an extensive soft pour all weather area, more picnic seating and an access path. This was done to make the area much more appealing and friendly for all users including the less able bodied and family groups. The Committee want to express their thanks to all who have contributed and supported our fund raising activities. More than £40,000 has been raised in the first 12 months towards our £66,000 target and this has given us sufficient funds to complete Phase 1 with a small surplus going towards the next 2 phases. Our aim is to complete the project before the end of 2015 and fund raising activity continues in earnest to raise the £26,000 needed to install the last 2 pieces of equipment. OVEN BAKED AND READY FOR YOUR HOME!

C

orners Warmers pride themselves on supplying the driest logs ready for your fire. The timber is predominantly sourced from Yorkshire and is transported to their farm in Easingwold where it is seasoned at least 12 months prior to it then getting sawn up into logs. The logs are then cleaned and stored in the log barn before delivery to your home. This results in logs which are never more than 20% moisture, produce a good heat output and burn without the sparks! However if you would like an even cleaner, hotter burn then Corners Warmers can now provide a new product ‘kiln dried logs’. These are so dry they contain as little as 15% moisture or less. Andrew speaks from experience when he says, “We have burnt these logs on our own woodburner and were impressed to find that we did not even need kindling or firelighters to start the fire going. We just placed the kiln dried logs on a bed of newspaper, ignited it and the logs commenced burning immediately”.

Kiln dried logs not only burn extremely hot but they are also a ‘clean’ burn so they do not produce as much soot. The kiln was installed during the summer of 2014. A massive 24 cubic metres of logs can be dried in the kiln at any one time. To demonstrate its capability: If you were to put freshly felled logs (which could be as much as 70% moisture) into the kiln it would take only 3 days to dry the logs to only 15% moisture. The kiln is heated by a woodchip biomass boiler. The woodchip used in the boiler is a by-product of the wood processing. There is therefore no waste from the conversion of the felled timber, to the dry logs that are delivered to your door!

COUPLING Roses are red and violets are blue, most poems rhyme… but they say marriage is the end of romance, so this one doesn’t. We’ve put together a collection of books for the big V-Day celebrations that focus on what happens after you and your love have been together for a while. Is there really such a thing as ‘happily ever after’? Or this this the beginning of the end?

A Spot of Bother - Mark Haddon

The secrets, hopes and disappointments of our ordinary lives come into question in Haddon’s great novel about one family and the couples within it. George and Jean have been married for decades, but their daughter Katie, divorced, is now getting remarried, to someone who has ‘strangler’s hands’, according to her brother. Jean’s trying to keep her affair under wraps and George has discovered a strange lump or lesion and decides he’s definitely on his last legs. It’s all a bit of a pickle really and a highly amusing game of who’ll end up with whom.

Couples - John Updike

It’s a bit naughty, this one. But it’s a classic, so you can’t be frowned upon for reading it! It focuses on the promiscuous lives of ten couples living in a small Massachusetts town during the 1960s and reading it is like stepping back into the decade of free love and experimentation. It’s full of historic references and mixes fact and fiction incredibly well. The group of married, fairly well-off thirty-something year old couples are taking full advantage of new methods of contraception and more liberal attitudes. Updike’s novel questions whether it’s a new utopian society, or whether they’re actually in a hell of their own making.

Us - David Nicholls

Women marry men thinking they can change them; men marry women hoping they’ll never change. Douglas would be quite happy to grow old and die together, but for Connie, that sentiment means their relationship is already dead in the water. She announces she’s going to pack her bags and leave him, but is persuaded by Douglas to make one final trip together. He’s got a master plan to reignite the spark and is pinning everything on this one holiday. Sounds like a fool-proof plan…

The Children Act - Ian McEwan

High Court Judge Fiona May presides over family cases, whilst her own home life is crumbling about 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

her. Her husband’s asked her if they can have an open marriage and it doesn’t go down all that well. When he leaves, she is left questioning her own belief system and what it means to be dignified and respectable. On the work front she’s tackling the case of a teenage boy whose parents won’t permit a medical procedure that could save his life, because of their religious beliefs. She’s struggling to get a grip while her world falls apart around her and it’s truly compelling writing as she battles in the courtroom and on the home front.

Juliet, Naked - Nick Hornby

When you’ve been around the block and back again, several thousand times, perhaps it’s time to move on. Annie’s been playing it safe and settling for Duncan and now she’s getting restless for some of that dramatic love she’s always dreamed of; the kind that sweeps you off your feet. The only trouble is she’s more likely to end up blown off her feet in the windswept Northern town of Gooleness. Does the excitement she craves lie with the American rock star who emails her… or does she need to look elsewhere?

The Rosie Project - Graeme Simsion

Ok, so here’s a last one that’s been thrown in because we think it’s absolutely marvellous and because it features 39 year old Don Tillman’s ‘Wife Project’: the most scientific approach to finding a missus that you’re ever likely to come across. If you thought eHarmony asked a lot of questions, wait until you fill in Don’s questionnaire. He’s tall, dark and handsome, but he also seems to have undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome. This professor of genetics hasn’t found his ‘other half’ and so devises a series of questions designed to filter out the undesirables. Enter Rosie. She’s everything he’s not looking for, and yet she might just be perfect for him. You will fall in love with the frustrating character that is Don Tillman and you’ll be rooting for the old ball and chain to be secured by the end of the novel. Proof there really is someone out there for everyone. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd February

The only place to be this February By Jen Grimble

Y

ork has a complex and diverse history, from the Roman walls that surround the city, to the Norman fortress of Clifford’s Tower. Yet it was the Viking’s who left their mark most notably on our landscape. Over 1,000 years Jorvik, as it was then known, was ruled by the Viking. Yet there was little evidence of this time until the Coppergate excavation began in 1979. York Archaeological Trust spent two years uncovering over 300,000 artefacts, providing us with our modern knowledge of Viking-age York. It is no surprise then, with York being the City of Festivals, that each year we throw a special event to revel in our Viking history. During February the JORVIK Viking Festival transforms our streets into bustling centres for helmet-clad warriors. This year, the annual event will take place between 14th and 22nd February and will be the perfect celebration of our rich heritage. Last year over 40,000 people took part in the weeklong festivities, as the event celebrated its 30th year. The festival focused on Ragnarok, or ‘Dooms Day of the Gods’, which accordingly to Norse mythology welcomed the world to be re-born in its aftermath. So, it seems appropriate that this year’s celebration is entitled ‘Brave New Viking World.’ The festival will comprise of family events like treasure hunts and Viking longboat making, as well as live performances and street parades, all with a theme of rebirth, just in time for spring! As the largest festival of its kind in Europe, the JORVIK Viking Festival is the only place to be this February. It promises to be yet another unforgettable event, so make sure you catch some of the fun for yourselves. Make way for the Viking’s, because they are coming!

ebruary isn’t quite spring, but there’s still plenty to celebrate because our local National Trust gardens are once again open for business. Forget the telly and the Internet, when you really want to get inspired by Nature you need to be out there amongst it. Obviously, you also need to be dressed for the part, which was how Wellygate came about. For those of a more rural disposition, wellies are a way of life. We pop to the shops in ours – you learn a lot about customer service by the reception your footwear receives. This time of year people are generally forgiving, unlike Anne’s wellies. When she noticed a split along one boot, she wasn’t unduly concerned; she even took my suggestion of a bicycle repair kit well. She improvised for a while with a plastic bag (a tad sweaty, I gather) and finally, accepting that 10 years is a good innings for boots, we checked for replacements online. The same brand (no names no pack drill) is now manufactured overseas – a sign of the times and, apparently, terrible customer reviews. I was delighted though because this gave us more reason to repair them, apart from my fondness for saving money. We went into town for some sealant and on the way back we detoured to the National Trust, where I gallantly lent Anne my wellies and trusted to my weatherproof boots. The sight of a few daffs, a smattering of cyclamen and a good show of snowdrops will gladden the heart of any gardener; it’s as if Nature is whispering that spring is definitely on its way, meantime here’s something to tide you over. Our walk completed, we bought some discounted cyclamen and retired

38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

to the tearoom, where I discovered my supposedly weatherproof boots had come out in sympathy. Luckily for us, we’d bought a large tube of sealant. Back home, we learned that a couple were moving out of their rented cottage soon – something to do with the landlord, upcountry, ringing in the changes (and the till). This was sad news indeed, as we’d bartered with them several times and our battered aluminium greenhouse was enjoying a new lease of life there. They grew the best rhubarb and, thanks to them, I saw my first tayberry in their garden. Villagers had been invited to pop up the following day if they wanted any cuttings and seeds, or to buy some of their stock. Next morning at 10 o’clock sharp we trundled up the lane (there are no proper roads), Anne carrying a tin of home baked scones. As we rounded the bend we joined a trail of neighbours who had all decided to put in an appearance – an event somewhere between community spirit and plant envy, with a whiff of the Boxing Day sales about it. There were people already milling about in the garden, secateurs and plastic bags in hand. Anne delivered the scones, while I went on a plant hunt worthy of the Bolithos. February is not the ideal time to take cuttings, and I’m not sure I agree with one neighbour’s advice of, “If in doubt, plant out,” but I’m delighted to have 10 rosemary cuttings in the house. Thanks to the cineole compound in our Rosmarinus officinalis, and along with our new rhubarb plant, what better way to remember your neighbours?

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE

60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.

2. SHOP AROUND

You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS

By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.

8. PROTECT YOUR TANK

As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.

3. GRAB A GADGET

Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.

4. ADD AN ADDITIVE

As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.

5. BOOK A SERVICE

The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.

6. DIAL IT DOWN

It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%!

Flaxton Childrens’ Nursery Develop Forest Area

We aim to give your child the best possible start in life

F

laxton Nursery was opened in 1999 by the current owner Jane Corner, a retired teacher. The nursery is not in a busy urban area or on an industrial estate, but on the grounds of Draft Farm, which was once a working farm. Situated in the picturesque, rural village of Flaxton, on the eastern outskirts of York and approximately a mile from the A64, it is easily accessed from a wide area. A small nursery registered for 30 children, aged from 3 months to 5 years, with both North Yorkshire County Council and OFSTED and therefore have Early Years funding available for 2,3 and 4 year olds. There are eight qualified staff employed, including a EYPS and trained SENDco on site.

The nursery was purposely designed to give children the opportunity to play in and explore, both inside and outside space in a safe and stimulating environment which all fits perfectly with the Forest School ethos.

Jane says, “After being open for several years we have decided to develop our existing large outside area which already has vast open spaces, a woodland and ecology pond, to further develop the children’s physical and environmental learning skills taking the lead from the Forest School ethos.

Nursery manager Jeanette Gray said “It’s a joy to see the children learn about the world around them in such a lovely educational environment”

Our Preschool teacher has experience of Forest school training and the children have visited Howsham Mill for Forest School sessions.” The new area provides exciting new opportunities for the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Top Tips from a dental professional

HOW TO HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT!!!! If you’re not worried about your waistline you really can have your cake and eat it. What by Christine Parker most people fail to realise is BDS (GDC 72136) that tooth decay is related to how often we consume food or drink and not how much we have. As a profession we do not always manage to get this message across to the patient, so after a course of treatment we have patients who return after a few years with more holes. If you have 3 sugars in your tea it will have a similar affect to half a teaspoon (or less) on your teeth, if you are busy person that has sips of your drink, or graze through the day instead of meals it will have a very damaging effect in the long term.

To reduce your risk of dental decay we recommend the following. • Avoid fizzy drinks as they are very acidic and dissolve tooth enamel including the sugar free ones. • Carbonated water can be as bad for the same reason. • Take your tea or coffee without sugar or use a sweetener. • For children try not to encourage a ‘sweet tooth’, plain milk or water are best to hydrate your child. • Try to encourage a meal habit. Dried fruit and shoot type drinks can also cause tooth decay. • Try to eat at mealtimes, this will lead to your teeth being under ‘acid attack’ for approximately 5 hours a day, each time you have something in between this will attack your teeth for a further hour and a half. • If you really do crave something sweet try to have your treat straight after your meal, it will not lengthen the time of the attack: that way you really can have your cake and eat it. If you would like specific advice on how to reduce your decay call Georgina for an appointment at.

tender. Meanwhile, crush the peppercorns coarsely using a pestle and mortar or the end of a rolling pin. Press firmly over both sides of the steaks. Set a griddle pan over a medium heat to preheat. Brush both sides of the steaks with oil. Place the steaks on the hot griddle pan and cook over a high heat for 1 minute on each side until seared. Reduce the heat and continue cooking for a further 2-4 minutes on each side until the steaks are cooked to your liking. Remove the steaks and cover and leave to rest for 2-3 minutes.

completely dissolved. Stir in the cornflour mixture and simmer for a further minute until slightly syrupy. Drain the potatoes, toss with the butter and parsley and season to taste. Transfer the steaks to warmed plates and spoon over the sauce. Serve with the potatoes and steamed vegetables.

TIP Sirloin, fillet or rump steak can be used in place of the rib eye. Make sure both steaks are an even thickness and always bring the steaks to room temperature for about 15 minutes before cooking. Resting the steaks for a few minutes after cooking will also help to ensure they are meltingly tender.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL THE HANDY MAG READERS FROM ALL OF THE CATS AT YORK CATS PROTECTION ADOPTION CENTRE! As always the last few weeks of the year have been a bit of a blur and many of our residents have bagged themselves new homes for the New Year and are now looking forward to starting their new lives.

people don’t want to take on a new cat. Sadly Florence also has kidney disease which, despite being relatively easy to treat with a special diet, means even less people are interested in adopting her.

Of course not all the cats in our care have been so lucky and we still have some lonely cats desperately seeking loving new homes to call their own. One such cat is a lovely older lady called Florence. Florence was brought in because she wasn’t happy in her previous home, where she had to share her space with 2 other cats. Cats are not a social species and generally prefer to be the only cat in a household, and Florence in particular was feeling decidedly stressed being in such close proximately to other cats.

Poor old Florence! On the positive side senior cats like Florence do make wonderful companion animals – they tend to enjoy staying indoors more often, perhaps sharing your favourite armchair, or even your lap if you’re lucky! We think Florence will bring a huge ray of sunshine into someone’s life, so please consider adopting a super older lady if you are looking for new cat for the New Year.

Luckily Flo is not quite so bothered by us human folk and she loves nothing more than some quiet one to one time with people. She enjoys being fussed and has a lovely gentle purr, almost inaudible, but it’s definitely there! At 10 years old Florence is unfortunately now in an age bracket where many

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

The Spirit of Bagan - Myanmar where tourists gather, the wilderness is yours, shared only with unruly goats, oxcarts and horsedrawn carriages. Ruined or restored, ancient structures pop up wherever you look, here a lonely pagoda, there a cluster of spires fiery red in the midday heat, a crumbling tower where creepers cling to the walls, a forgotten temple where children play in the sand. The best way to explore is to walk, hop on a cart or hire a bicycle, though this is likely to get stuck in the sand from time to time.

O

n a bend of the Irrawaddy river in Upper Burma, over 2000 pagodas and temples glow on the red plains of Bagan. Only thorn bushes and a handful of palms grow on the desert sand but across the river, the Rakhine mountains look down from afar on the world’s highest concentration of Buddhist heritage. From the 9th to the 13th centuries, Pagan - as it was called - was the prosperous capital of a new kingdom, uniting the regions which form the basis of modern Myanmar. They say that 55 kings reigned in Pagan, a city reputed for its religious and academic studies and a place of pilgrimage where donations from devotees financed thousands of religious buildings from monasteries to stupas (pagodas) and temples. Representing the Buddhist cosmos, stupas were designed as relic chambers graced by ornate brick pediments, often guarded by ogre statues and later developing into bell-shaped pagodas. On the other hand, temples were used for prayer and meditation and characterised by pointed arches and vaulted chambers. The 11th century technique proved so strong that early temples survived the massive 1975 earthquake, unlike later structures when the know-how had been lost. Weakened by Mongol invasions, Pagan’s golden age came to an end in 1287 when a new kingdom was created. Yet, the city remained a popular pilgrimage and temples continued to be built to express devotion.

But beyond the abandoned ruins, two temples embellished through the ages attract pilgrims as they have done for centuries. The splendid Shwezigon pagoda defies imagination. Today it is covered in gold leaf, its finely sculpted terraces topped by a dazzling dome. At the other end of town, near the city wall, the Ananda Temple boasts precious wall paintings and carvings and a revered Buddha image whose smiling face appears to change as you approach. There is little doubt that Bagan’s vast heritage is unrivalled, even by the crowded Angkor Wat, yet the site has not yet achieved UNESCO status. On the tentative list since 1996, it suffers from ongoing controversy surrounding some ‘modern’ restoration and the burgeoning infrastructure needed to accommodate growing numbers of visitors. But for those who come this far, it hardly matters at all for when the sun sets over spires and towers, the spirit of Bagan lives on, haunting the dusty plain as it has done for over 1000 years.

Today after a long political boycott, Bagan greets returning visitors with an Archaeological Zone spreading over 26 square miles, bristling with spires and towers. Beyond a few major sites 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

GARDENING Preparing for Warmer Weather By Pippa Greenwood Start by clearing up any remaining fallen leaves, broken twigs. Twigs and woody debris are best binned or burned or perhaps even heaped up in the corner of the garden to act as a sheltering spot for wildlife, but fallen leaves, and the top growth of herbaceous perennials, can be added to the compost heap.

The combination of the poor weather in February and the very fact that gardens tend to be at their least appealing this month, means the chances are yours is receiving nothing much more than a fair helping of neglect at the moment. But spring isn’t far away so get your gardening gloves on for a bit of preparation.

Experienced company based in Strensall. INSURED TO 5 MILLION

When it comes to tackling herbaceous or flower borders, don’t make things look too clean and tidy, as you may well cut down on the protection that faded top-growth can provide. I tend to leave most of the remains of herbaceous plants in place until spring, but the most ugly, straggly or unkempt bits could certainly be cleared up now. Keep a particular look out for slugs and snails and collect them up while they are snoozing! It is too early in the year to cut your lawn and indeed you should try to keep off it as far as possible, but you can clear twigs and leaves and cut back any weeds which have grown faster than the grass itself. >>

A trip to your local garden centre is bound to give you plenty of ideas for what’s looking good this month.

>> You can use any pots or other containers which have been left around the garden to create spots of colour and interest by clearing them out, using fresh compost and then replanting them. If you choose temporary winter plantings such as winter flowering pansies or pompom winter daisies, then these can simply be removed when it is time to replant with summer bedding. Scrubbing down the outer surfaces of pots and containers will also help to clean them up again, because by now they have invariably accumulated a good helping of algae and soil and can look quite a mess. Check fruit trees for signs of any dead shrivelled

fruit still on the branches and cut these out, as they often harbour brown rot disease and can cause a lot of problems in the future. However these definitely shouldn’t be composted - bin or burn any you find. Use a stiff brush to clear off surface debris from your terrace or patio and then once it is clear, if it still looks in need of a bit of a facelift, use the stiff brush or yard broom to scrub it over thoroughly. Provided freezing weather is not forecast, wash it over with a few buckets of water. A trip to your local garden centre is bound to give you plenty of ideas for what’s looking good this month. Some of my favourites include the small trees or shrubs which have a delicious fragrance during the winter months. These include winter sweet, hamamelis (witch hazel) and sarcococca. You can now buy pots of snowdrop bulbs which are not far from flowering so ‘cheat’ a little and pop a few of these into the ground. Winter flowering heathers and winter flowering pansies can also be used to great effect right now. MOBILE MOTORING MADNESS

By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMagazine.co.uk) You can spot them easily, like rule-breaking beacons. With music streaming services like Spotify working through car audio systems, social media streams constantly pinging away with notifications, not to mention text messages and emails, the temptation to not touch the phone is too hard for most to resist. Can you honestly say that you’ve never touched your phone while driving? I can’t.

Next time you’re sitting in a traffic jam, or waiting at the lights, or on a motorway even, take a little look around you and – especially if it’s during a dark commute home – I’m

willing to wager you’ll be surrounded by countless illuminated, bowed heads of motorists checking their phones.

British Car Auctions recently quizzed 445 motorists and 95 per cent of them said they’d seen another driver using a mobile phone. Some 82 per cent of them had seen someone texting >>

>> or emailing too and 42 per cent admitted to doing it themselves. The official advice is to turn it off, but the problem with that is phones have become intrinsically linked to our cars. Most modern models offer Bluetooth connectivity that lets you take calls at the wheel, stream music from your handset, while some even let you access the web from the car using your phone’s signal. While I can’t deny all these features are handy, could it be the case that car manufacturers are sending out the wrong message? Are they condoning the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel by implementing all this technology? A report from Canada found drivers talking on handsfree devices were ‘far more likely to make errors on the road’. And, come on, admit it, when you’re having a conversation on

handsfree are you REALLY paying attention properly? I contacted the Association of Chief Police Officers to ask them what would happen to a driver who had an accident while talking, perfectly legally, on a handsfree kit. A spokesman said the likelihood was that the driver would be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or, in more extreme cases, for dangerous driving. And it’s already happened. One case in 2008 involved lorry driver Mervyn Richmond, 49, who had been talking to his mother for 23 minutes using Bluetooth in his cab when he ran into back of a Transit van, killing its passenger. He was jailed for four-and-a-half years for dangerous driving. Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, told The Daily Mail at the time: ‘When you are using

any mobile while driving you are four times more likely to have an accident.’ FOUR times. So here’s my idea. I think it’s time for a manufacturer to introduce a device that stops your phone working when the engine is on. A sort of enforced airplane mode that means no calls, texts, emails or data can be received, but music can still be played if it’s plugged in. It would take a brave manufacturer to make the move, but marketed correctly it could be a winner. With mobile phone use behind the wheel increasing, despite the threats of points and fines, now has to be the time to take drastic measures. But is there a car maker brave enough to make the move first? Who knows… What do you think? Tweet me @ CarDealerEd and let me know.

JOSEPH ROWNTREE THEATRE Haxby Road, York, YO31 8TA www.jrtheatre.co.uk 6 - 7 FEBRUARY Cinderella

Cinderella ballet with a Charleston twist in Jazz & Tap Patricia Veale School of Dance. An enchanting show for young children and all ages.

14 FEBRUARY Trip The Light - YSJ Dance Competition

groomed for Oxbridge. Hector, the eccentric English master, teaches the boys poetry that he hopes will prepare them for the ‘long littleness of life’. But the league-table-obsessed Headmaster is not willing to leave them in Hector’s hands alone, and to complement him and the much put-upon history teacher Mrs Lintott, the Head employs Mr Irwin, a young teacher with a unique view on history, and how to get into Oxbridge. As if soaking up Auden, Housman and understanding the causes of the Second World War weren’t taxing enough, the boys have also to try and unravel their emerging sexualities, and discover what school, university and education are really about.

Universities from around the country come and join us at the theatre to compete in categories including Tap, Ballet, Street and Contemporary at intermediate and advanced levels. A fun day to be had by all those involved.
