elcome to the February edition. I try not to always harp on about the weather in my editor’s letter but really this month it’s impossible! As I write, the River Derwent is as high as I’ve ever seen it, flooding the car park where we park for work but worse, causing congestion around Malton with the County Bridge and Commercial Street, Norton closed to traffic again. York is mid clear-up and our thoughts go out to the very many people who have had a miserable start to 2016 with homes and businesses to clean and rebuild after the Christmas deluge. Well done to the city for getting up and on with it. Show your support for the Viking Festival this month. Despite the Jorvik Viking Centre being flooded, along with other venues, with lots of help

and hard work, the festival is going ahead as planned. See page 10 for more details. We’re always asking our advertisers about the Handy Mag. Does it work for you? Do you get lots of calls/visitors? Do you like your advert? Where do your calls come from? But we haven’t ever asked our readers the most important question - what you think about our magazines? This month we’re giving you a chance to tell us! On page 73 you’ll find a brief questionnaire. Please fill it in and send it to us – or drop it into our office in Malton – and you might even win a prize! We’d love to make the Handy Mags as good as they can be and it’d be great to have your help! Congratulations to Miss Curcher from Huntington who won our December competition. Until next month…

JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL LIKE CANUTE, WE CAN’T CONTROL WATER, BUT FESTIVAL PLANS ARE GOING AHEAD FULL SPEED!

15 - 21 FEBRUARY 2016 Highlights of the 2016 JORVIK Viking Festival will include: A living history encampment spread across Parliament Street and Coppergate A series of events in the Combat Arena at York Guildhall, pitting king against challenger to tell the story of the rise to power of the House of Denmark which brought Canute to the throne

W

hether they were fighting Anglo Saxons or the turbulent waters of the North Sea, there was little that would stop the Vikings from achieving their goals, and this Norse spirit is set to be carried on in York for this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival despite the flooding that has closed the worldfamous JORVIK Viking Centre.

“However, a visit to the JORVIK Viking Centre was only part of the Festival experience, and with our other attractions and the majority of venues remaining dry throughout the recent flooding, we’ll continue to welcome the Viking invaders this February, and hope that the next flood we experience will be one of Viking enthusiasts congregating in the city from 15 – 21 February.”

“When we decided to focus the theme for the 2016 on the 1000th anniversary of Canute taking the throne of England, little did we realise that we’d have our own moment of standing with water lapping at our feet, commanding it to stop its flow, but that’s what happened – and just like Canute, the water continued to rise within the attraction despite our best efforts,” comments Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust.

Organisers are working with venues around the city – some of which were also affected by flooding – to ensure that the vast majority of events, including the grand fiery finale, continue as planned. “All of our outdoor locations are now clear of flood water, but we will need to relocate one of our talks to another venue in the city centre,” explains Sarah.

An exploration of the continued influence of our Norse forbearers on the English language today, with a special lecture on Vikings In Your Vocabulary A retelling of a classic story, Beowulf by Candlelight – a regular sell-out in the Festival calendar The Ultimate Viking Banquet – the most romantic evening of the festival recreating the betrothal of King Canute with fine food and ale flowing! The 2015 Banquet saw a genuine wedding proposal! Finale weekend, including the March to Coppergate, with hundreds of warriors processing through the city streets from York Minster to the JORVIK Viking Centre, the annual Best Beard Contest, open to Vikings and Norse enthusiasts of all ages and genders, and culminating in the son-et-lumière finale event at the Eye of York, with battles, pyrotechnics and music!

Full details of this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival are available on the dedicated website, www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

GREAT PRICES & EXCELLENT SERVICE ALL YEAR ROUND! with Calladene’s Home & Property Services

T

he start of another year means it’s sale time! Or is it? Kitchen and bedroom companies promote knockdown prices for their products, with pressure to buy now, to tempt customers as 2016 gets underway.

Steve and Jodie of Calladene’s Home & Property Services disagree with the need for sales. “At Calladene’s we offer honest low prices all year round so there’s just no need for huge sale discounts! Before you agree to a sale price, call Calladene’s as we believe we can offer a much more competitive price. We know from experience we are often 30-40% cheaper.” With over two decades of experience, Steve and his son Jodie have a solid reputation for excellent craftsmanship, service and pricing. Steve explained: “We guarantee to beat any like-for-like quote, so there should be need for gimmicky sales if your pricing is reasonable from the start. We look at the true cost of the project.” Calladene’s offer high quality kitchens and bedrooms at great prices all year round with no pressure and always with superb customer service. With around 300 bedroom styles to choose from and a wide range of kitchen designs, there is something to inspire all tastes and budgets. Calladene’s can take on all work

in and around the home such as kitchen and bedroom fitting including general building work, joinery, tiling, flooring, decorating and much more. Steve said: “We can work on full projects and also smaller, but no less important jobs, from gutter cleaning to power-washing a drive. “We talk to all our customers about their requirements however large or small the job. For our bedroom and kitchen fittings, we book a time to talk the the client, take measurements, show samples, go through the price list and then produce computerised images and our overall price for the project”, said Steve. “Once we’ve delivered

the images and price, there’s no pressure or obligation and it’s clear from the beginning how reasonable our prices are.” Once the ‘go ahead has been given’ all works are carried out by Steve and Jodie, without the need for subcontractors, saving on time and keeping to the timescale agreed. “The whole project, from first plans to complete installation, is given the very best, consistent attention to detail” said Steve. With their customers’ best interest at heart, Calladene’s service, pricing and reputation means you can forget the ‘silly sales season’!

Need PlaNs drawiNg?

WHO DO YOU CALL? By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

E

verybody knows that to contact the Police or another Emergency Service that 999 is the emergency number. Despite numerous appeals to the public to only use this number in the case of an emergency it is still used on a number of calls that are far from an emergency. We would never discourage people from using the 999 service but would just stress that it is for emergencies only. If you genuinely believe that you need the Police with you immediately then this is the number to call but please use an alternative if your call is not urgent. The non emergency number for the Police is 101. This number offers several options and the option to report an incident will put you through to the same Control Room as a 999 call. The only difference between the two numbers is that you may have a short wait for your call to be answered when using 101. Should the staff in the Control Room believe that on listening to your call that it is an emergency then Officers will still be dispatched immediately from the use of the 101 number. There is an option when calling 101 to speak to an individual Officer. This is not an option to report a new incident but is a good way to ask questions of your local officers or to request an update on an ongoing investigation. The Police are not always the right people to call. If you are a tenant of a Housing Association or similar it is often more appropriate to contact them direct as they have many powers to deal with anti social behaviour related to their properties. If you are experiencing problems with a noisy neighbour then the best people to contact are City of York Council on 01904 551555 and they can deal with these issues for you. If you are in any doubt, your local PCSO is always available to offer you advice as to the best person for you to contact.

LET KITCHEN REVIVE BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THE HEART OF YOUR HOME

A

s one of the busiest rooms in your home, the kitchen plays a vital role in daily life. So it’s no wonder it needs a refresh now and again! Kitchen Revive has now been trading for nearly two years, and due to the success of the business, Jon and the team are delighted to announce the launch of Bedroom Revive, directed by Jon’s business partner Jenny. Jenny explains about this exciting development: “Bedroom Revive is the same concept as Kitchen Revive, it just involves a different room in the home. “With over 1,000 colours and style combinations available, we are sure to find something to revitalise a tired bedroom and transform it into something you’ve always dreamed of.” Both Jon and Jenny really get to know their customers, with no pressured sales tactics or hurried decisions.

Jon explained: “We’ve been amazed at the number of customers who want to update their kitchen without the hassle and expense of having a brand new one. The variety of jobs we’ve completed has been vast, ranging from replacing taps or a sink to refreshing a whole kitchen including worktops, unit doors, sinks and tiling.” A family-run company based near York, the team at Kitchen Revive, and now Bedroom Revive, will project

Jon is an experienced joiner and fitter, and heads a team of City & Guilds qualified fitter with over three decades’ experience between them. ith the cold weather finally arriving, its time to think about how you’ll stay warm this winter. By tapping into the earth’s naturally renewable resources, Pickering-based Peak Power Systems can help you be kinder to the environment while heating your home and helping you reduce your energy costs. Heat pumps extract heat from the air, or the ground, and heat your home without the need to burn any fuel. Like a traditional gas or oil-fired boiler, these systems provide heating and hot water for the property concerned. “The first thing to do” says Debbie, “is to contact us and ask one of our fullytrained surveyors to visit your house to assess your heating

These payments run for seven years, and in many cases will pay substantially more than the cost of the system. “Commercial buildings can also receive the RHI, but the registration system is different for commercial customers.”

Although the Feed in Tariff has now been reduced, you can still expect a return of between 7%10%, so as well as benefiting from free electricity, it is also still a very good investment. Weddings Weddings take lots of organisation and effort to ensure you have a perfect day. With the help of local businesses your planning can be ‘plain sailing’!

Or perhaps you have a dress that can be altered for your wedding day…

Here’s a handy checklist to help you …

Choose the bridesmaids dresses, groomsmen outfits and liaise with the respective mums about their choice of outfits.

AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:

Announce your engagement. Decide the wedding date, type of venue and ceremony. Religious or civil ceremony? Country house? Hotel? A church? These tend to book up rapidly, so this should be your first consideration. Agree a budget - and stick to it! You can be creative with the financial side of it. Call in some favours from friends, as many will be willing to help out with the ‘big day’. Have you checked the legal requirements for your ceremony? Come up with the guest list – stick to loved ones who can genuinely share the joy of your special day. Think about catering … buffet? Sit-down meal? Hog roast? In-house catering? Also decide what you’re having to drink – bubbly, wines, local beers … Book the photographer, the DJ or live music and the transport to and from the wedding. If you want to lose weight for your wedding day, then sign up to a slimming class as soon as possible. The Most Important Dress of Your Life, Ladies – perhaps one the nicest aspects of the preparations.

Book that honeymoon and check your passports are valid!

FIVE MONTHS TO GO

Get quotes from florists, book hair and make-up for the wedding day. Why not have some beautiful table decorations or hire vintage tea sets or crockery? Choose the wedding rings, book the wedding cake.

THREE MONTHS TO GO

Send out the invites, choose readings and music for the service.

TWO MONTHS TO GO

Have a final dress fitting, print the menu and place cards and any other stationery.

ONE MONTH TO GO

Confirm all bookings, final guest numbers and draw up the seating plan. Prepare the speeches and choose gifts for the wedding party.

TWO WEEKS TO GO

Final rehearsal, try on the wedding shoes and have the Hen and Stag parties.

ON THE DAY

Stick to the timetable – then relax and enjoy your day.

FOODS

WORLD

OF THE

WANT TO CREATE A NEW FUTURE?

BY MARY MAHON

A

s the aura of Christmas completely wears off, I’m sure many of you may be left with one festive reminder: a life’s supply of Christmas left-overs. Maybe not the chocolates or mince pies that would be gratefully accepted, but perhaps some freezer bags of turkey and stuffing. Personally, I love it because Christmas food is always the best! It made me wonder what festive food is enjoyed in other parts of the world. Having a dad that travels a lot, I often see streams of photos accompanied by stories of crazy cultural differences. Whilst many of us in the Western world enjoy cows, pigs or chicken, many other places enjoy the most exotic and bizarre-looking fish, assortments of insects, or plates of jellied blood! Although this may repulse many of us here in the West, to people in other cultures our food might likewise seem repulsive! In our westernised society, we eat with a unified agreement, sharing and accepting our idea of mutual morals and ‘nice’ tastes. However, maybe our view is skewed. Pigs are actually one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, smarter than cats, dogs and horses with the ability to learn new skills easily and store them in their long-term memories… So why do we find it acceptable to eat them? Recently, the Daily Mail announced that IQ tests have revealed that pigs can outsmart both dogs and chimpanzees, with their intelligence levels often matching that of three-year old children! Also they too can be family pets (provided you live on a farm), so it’s fairly baffling as to why we find it acceptable to eat them as a cultural norm whilst turning our noses up at the thought of eating these other animals. Despite this, we shouldn’t suddenly feel shamed for buying a pack of bacon from the supermarket, or immediately convert to vegetarianism at the apparent injustice, but maybe we should try to break our inherent social stigma towards other cultural foods. I’d still maybe avoid the jellied blood though!

Top Tips from a dental professional

WHY HAVE PRIVATE DENTISTRY?

F

irstly it’s very important to state that dentistry by Christine Parker should be tailored to BDS (GDC 72136) your needs and provided in a safe, clean and caring environment. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is required to visit all practices to assess this is the case. Whether private or NHS, you should expect your dentist to treat you with care and consideration and to try to ensure that treatment is pain-free as much as possible. There might be the odd occasion where this is not possible but it should be the exception rather than the rule. At Howardian Dental we take time to get to know our patients, using high quality materials and products. Laboratory work, such as dentures and crowns can be available in a large range of shades and shapes. As a rule, these tend to look more natural and to last longer. Why would I want to spend more time in the dentist’s chair, you may ask? Well, it is actually much more relaxing to be seen on time, and to have the opportunity to discuss and diagnose your treatment needs without feeling rushed.

ON-SITE COMPUTER MAINTENANCE & SUPPORT Friendly personalised service for small businesses, home office and home users

Your dentist can also show you exactly how to look after your mouth and offer personalised information on how to address your dental problems. So, to summarise, would you like treatment in a caring and unrushed environment with excellent quality materials? If so, consider changing to private dentistry and contact Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

RSPB, YORK BRANCH 9 FEBRUARY Illustrated talk on “Bulgaria – The Autumnal Mass Migration” by Roger Barnes.

SNOWDROP SPECTACULAR Every February, hundreds of thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground, creating a magnificent white carpet across the woodland floor of the much-loved Elizabethan stately home. Simon Cunliffe-Lister says: “At the end of a long winter we relish the sight of the hardy little plants every year. They remind us that winter, however harsh, does eventually give way to spring!” After seeing the snowdrops visitors can stroll around the Hall’s courtyard, the Home and Garden Shop, the Gift Shop, the Courtyard Café and propagated plant displays. Best Foot Forward with Reflexology

M

any of us will have heard of reflexology – but what does this therapy involve?

Reflexology uses skilful, gentle manipulation of the foot, which is a perfect mini-map of the human body, with organs, glands and body parts positioned proportionally on your foot. Starting with the toes representing the head region, the ball of the foot represents the chest, the inset the abdomen, the inside curve of the foot the spine and heel the pelvic area. At Gaia Holistix, Vivien McGlashan is keen to promote this natural healing practice. By using her experience and training, Vivien can rebalance

and heal parts of the body, as well as inducing a deep sense of relaxation.

Vivien explained: “The relaxation and rebalancing can promote natural healing on all levels and is suitable for all ages. “So whether you just want some quality ‘time out’ or assistance with your general health, reflexology can help.” Vivien received her first reflexology session 25 years ago and was so impressed she became a trained practitioner in the therapy! She still enjoys both giving and receiving reflexology and is amazed at the extraordinary way it can make people feel. Vivien explains: “A reflexology

session begins with a full consultation. Shoes and socks are removed and feet are refreshed in a foot spa containing tea tree and lavender oils. The person receiving the treatment then lies on the treatment couch, covered with a blanket and there’s soothing music playing. “I then apply the reflexology in a variety of different techniques stimulating the body’s reflexes. “Following the treatment, the participant feels refreshed, invigorated and energised.” Benefits include stimulation of nerve function, increased energy, boosted circulation, relief of sleep disorders, reduction in depression and pain relief. I’ve had sleepless nights thinking about the year ahead. Whilst we had a topsy turvy 2015, I realise how lucky we are. The floods stopped short of my father’s front door, there was no doctor’s recall after a check up and my husband didn’t slump in the car with a heart attack. My father’s dementia is now causing him anxiety when alone, so we made the decision that he will be happier in the company of others. This year I am determined that I won’t let the year drift along. We only have one life and I want to spring out of bed looking forward to what’s ahead then fall back at the end of the day, fulfilled. Easier said than done! I recognise I need to pull my finger out to grow my business and support my sons in their plans. Speaking with my monthly Damsels in Success group keeps front of mind what I WANT to do and am COMMITTED to doing. The best feedback I hear, is that our three hours a month give us precious time to reflect on what feelings bring us joy, how we make it easier to take the right actions and see progress.

TODAY’S TIP... STOP WISHING AND START DOING. Write down just one outcome you want to see and hear, what’s missing now and what needs to happen to make this real. What’s your first step to take? Share it with someone you trust and have them hold you accountable for taking that action. For more tips you can put straight into practice for this year to be amazing, come along to our next Damsels evening on February 10th and start to Live your Dream with Ease. Simply register for a FREE place on the website www. damselsinsuccess.co.uk/york/events and find out the details.

VALENTINE’S

DAY CELEBRATIONS

A

s I’ve never really been big on romance, I am unlikely to make a grand gesture on Valentine’s Day. This year, February 14th falls on a Sunday, traditionally a day when we take it easy. With two young daughters, even this low-key ‘celebration’ is doubtful, as even Sunday seems to herald an early, energetic start!

Manufacturers & Installers of Traditional Architectural Joinery

t. 01653 692377 e. mail@nortonjoinery.co.uk www.nortonjoinery.co.uk

So, what other options are there? A bunch of flowers? As I’m allergic to these, the red roses can remain at the florists. What about a romantic card, with a winged cherub, bow and arrow on the front? No doubt the cards will be on the mantelpiece, yet our girls find it all perplexing and even more mysterious that their parents want to spend some quality time together ‘sans enfants’. The luxury of a meal out seems a task too far on a night when most parents will be on the hunt for a willing babysitter… and as for booking a table in advance… So how about a ‘stay at home’ evening so we can spend a couple of hours over a meal and maybe share a bottle of fizz? Assuming the kids are in bed and settled, it’s then a matter of deciding what to eat. Something other than baked beans and sausages, the Valentine’s meal is a special one so it demands a bit more sophistication… For us, we’ll either plump for a meal that’s easy to prepare or, more likely, we’ll treat ourselves to a take-away. There, problem solved. A winning solution for all! Given our ever-hectic lives, a meal for two in the comfort of your own home seems the best gesture to make on Valentine’s Day. The winged cherub can then take a rest until next year. Now where did I put that take-away menu?

IT’S TIME TO JOIN FORCES AND HELP

HAXBY HALL! ‘RAISE THE ROOF’ ATMEMORIAL

H

axby Memorial Hall was built as the village school in 1876. As the population grew, so did the school, having several extensions added on over the years. In 1956 a larger, purpose-built school was opened further down the village in Station Road, named Ralph Butterfield School. After the school moved premises, the Parish Council took over the running of the building although it’s not known when the building was renamed Haxby Memorial Hall. In May 1982, it was transferred by Trust Deed to a Trustee Committee to keep the Hall for community use. During the 80s, the Hall was extended again to provide better facilities for the community. Haxby Memorial Hall is at the heart of the community and is used by many groups, classes and bands. In 2014, the Hall also became the home of Vale Radio, a local community radio station. In January, 2015, plans were approved to extend the Hall further and provide additional 21st

58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

century facilities to help increase community usage. The plans include extending the size of the hall, improving kitchen facilities, providing additional rooms for hire, and building five craft units. On a daily basis, the Hall still needs to be maintained and looked after and to keep the Hall going it takes a dedicated team of Trustees and Fundraisers. And more volunteers are needed! At present the Trustees are in charge of the day-to-day running of the Hall including book keeping, insurance, advertising, health and safety, and most importantly finding grants to bring the plans to fruition. The Fundraisers are currently raising money to replace the roof with the “Raise the Roof Appeal”. The roof is being replaced in six phases, as and when funds are raised. With fantastic support from Hall users and the community, three phases were completed by the end of 2015 and it is hoped the work will be finished in 2016.

Denise Moss of Haxby Memorial Hall said: “A little spark may have ignited with Handy Mag readers and you may have some brilliant ideas to help us raise more money for the roof fund. We would love to hold some larger events involving more of the community, so we would welcome volunteers to help the cause. “If anyone would like to know more about what the Trustees do, or if you have experience in similar fields, we’d love to hear from you. Or if you just like to help out events, fundraising or building maintenance, please get in touch.” Haxby Memorial Hall is a great building and is entering a very exciting period of its history. If you would like to be part of it please call for an informal chat and speak to Chris about Trustees or Denise about fundraising on 01904 761825.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MOTORING

The Fiat 500 - Remastering an Icon Fiat’s whizzy runabout may have had a facelift but it still has bags of retro-chic.

seconds. It’s frugal too: none of the three engines gives a combined cycle of less than 60mpg.

I heard it first-hand that some weeks the 500 is the only car Fiat dealers sell, and at other times it outsells all other models in their range combined. But who’s surprised really? Since its launch in 2007, Fiat have made 1.5 million 500s. And the reason is it’s simply a fun car to drive.

After nearly 10 years of production, Fiat have remained wise and maintained both the lines and the size of the 500. Facelifts are sometimes more than cosmetic and can extend to lengthening of the wheelbase or widening of the body. Sure, it’s getting on for twice the size of the Cinquecento, but that didn’t come with airbags and air conditioning. Keeping the size the same means the remastered Fiat 500 is still the fun tippy-toes whizz-about it’s always been.

The original reincarnation drew entirely on the original 1960s Cinquecento’s Italian style. This “re-master”, as Fiat calls it, is no different. Along with the BMW Mini and Vauxhall’s Adam, Fiat has plugged firmly into the “fashion car” sector, appealing to those buyers who like their runabout styled with their own personal touches, but are still part of the chic set. The sporty Abarth version aside, the 500 is now available in three trim levels: the Pop, Pop Star and Lounge. Three petrol engines provide the go. The mid-range, but tiny, 900cc turbo-charged two-cylinder TwinAir 85bhp version recently secured Fiat the Citycar award from eco-motoring website Next Green Car, but the other two are no gas guzzlers either. A second 105bhp turbo version of the 900cc engine is the most powerful whilst, surprisingly, the lowest powered of the trio is a 1.2 normally-aspirated 4 cylinder variant. Standard features include LED running lights, height-adjustable steering wheel, USB and aux-in connections on the stereo, central locking and electric windows. The top of the range Lounge version augments this with, amongst other features, fog lights, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen based entertainment system. Where the facelift and the sector positioning really show is in the customisation, where the available combinations take up about three-quarters of the glossy sales catalogue. From wheel size through exterior styling to interior colours and gadgets, the list goes on. The options even extend to the style of 500 badge on the (optional, of course) side protection strips and the colour of the key fob cover! With its small engines you’d think that the 500 would struggle to beat a snail - but it’s not so. The 85 horse powers of the mid-spec engine nip the car along to a very respectable 107mph and get it to 60 in 11

The Long Term Effects of Extreme Flooding What To Do. RENEW THE SOIL AND THE ROOTS Wet soil fosters potential problems such as Phytophthora root rot disease. We recommend the use of Bartlett’s granular or liquid fertiliser and combining several techniques to help revitalise soils and root systems.

The long term effects include: • • •

Leaves begin to yellow, wilt and decay. Branch dieback occurs. Damage occurs to the roots and dieback of the root system allows pests and diseases such as Phytophthora root rot into the tree. Large scale root damage affects structural stability and makes trees liable to blowing over, especially in high winds.

Treatment helps trees recover from flooding damage: • • • •

Perform a soil analysis. Apply nitrogen and specialised phosphite fertilisation treatments. Improve drainage and relieve compacted soil using air spade technology. Apply mulch once the flooding has subsided.

GARDENING Feathered Friends

By Pippa Greenwood

Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and as many help to keep pests at bay for much of the year it makes sense to encourage them in. You can provide a haven for wild birds as long as you have a fair number of potential hiding places, such as a few good sized shrubs or trees - and trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome.

Rock & Stone York Ltd

LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES

An absolute ‘must visit’ for all garden makers

What else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? A source of water really is one of the best features, so either buy an ornamental birdbath or create one from a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with stones, to reduce the depth. Ideally the water should be changed every other day, but at this time of year it is essential to make sure that the water does not freeze for long periods of time. Other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are also perfect. Providing birds with additional food materials is worthwhile, but remember to provide a constant supply or they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most. If you have a problem with squirrels, then use a squirrel proof feeder. If squirrels are not a problem, use a cheaper nut feeder, but position it so it is out of range of cats.

Save household scraps for birds too; they enjoy apples, cooked rice, cheese, old breakfast cereal, raisins and sultanas and, of course, bread. Buy fat balls which contain mixed seeds and hang them from trees or large shrubs where they will provide a meal for many birds and, provided you position them correctly, means that you can also enjoy watching them. I only buy the net-free fat balls, as birds’ feet can get trapped in the net. You can also buy grubs and larvae to feed the birds. These high protein snacks are particularly useful once birds start feeding their young in the spring, and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order or from garden centres and pet shops. If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Choose one not easily accessible by cats, and position it where you can watch the birds as they feed. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge just tall enough for me to reach its flat clipped top surface. I put out bird food on flat wooden trays – perfect for me to view and impossible for cats to get the wrong idea about who is meant to be eating! www.pippagreenwood.com

MICROCHIPPING

From 6th April 2016 Microchipping of all dogs over 8 weeks of age will be the law!!! Those found without a microchip will have the benefits explained to them and be given a short period to comply. If they fail to chip their dog, owners will face a fine of up to £500. Having your dog microchipped is one of the best ways to increase your pet’s chances of getting home. Unlike dog tags and collars, which can fall off or be removed, microchipping is a permanent form of identifying your dog. But don’t forget the law says all dogs must wear a collar and tag, with their owner’s name, address and telephone number on it. A microchip is a small electronic device, the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted under the dog’s skin (this procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination). The chip contains a unique number that can be read by a scanner. The dog owner’s contact details relating to this unique number are logged on a central database, so should the dog ever go missing or be stolen it can be scanned by local authorities and vets. Sadly owners forget to notify their microchip database of their new contact details if they move address or change telephone numbers. Please remember that from April 2016 it will be a requirement under the law that you must keep your dog’s microchip information up-to-date; if you do not, then the microchip is useless. It’s really quite simple to update the details for your dog’s microchip. You can do it online, by telephone or by post, depending on which database your chip is registered to. Charges for updating your chip details also vary across the microchip databases. If you don’t have the chip number, ask your vet to scan your dog’s microchip

Fabio was in poor health when he arrived at the Animal Home; he is improving and putting on weight so he is now well enough to find a new home. Fabio is an energetic young dog so he will need an equally active family who are willing to do some training with him. He is under socialised with other dogs so he would benefit from owners who can spend some time helping him overcome this. Badger is a young boy who is full of energy and playfulness. He will need an experienced home with people who are at home for most of the day and can put some time in with Badger to do some obedience training. Badger could possibly live with a tolerant dog and possibly live a very confident cat and with older children.

JOIN OUR LOTTERY! We are your local RSPCA, and take care of up to 75 dogs, 72 cats and many small animals. We can only do this because of the generous support of people like you. If you can help us by donating just £5 a month you can join our Lottery Club, each month three winners are drawn for prizes of £60, £25 and £15, with a £100 bonus in December.

If you’re interested in joining simply email frc@rspca-yorkhome.org and we will send you all the details. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 71

MONDAY MORNING DISEASE ‘Monday Morning Disease’ is so called because it typically occurred in working horses when they had enjoyed time off at the weekend. Set-fast or ‘tying-up’ are some of many names used to describe what is known as Exertional Rhabdomyolysis in the veterinary world. It is a common exercise-associated muscle disease seen in horses with some horses suffer from re-occurring episodes and some horses only having one or two episode during their entire life time. There are many different causes for the disease such as sudden increase in workload, poor fitness, over feeding high carbohydrate diets, general illness, electrolyte imbalance and heritable disorders. Identification of the underlying cause will help managing and preventing future attacks. Most suffering horses are seen sweating with a stiff gait and muscle trembles after exercising. Other signs may be reluctance to walk, stretching out, rapid breathing and painful tense hind quarters. If you notice any of these signs stop working your horse and call your vet. Forcing a horse to work through an episode may cause further damage. The vet will usually carry out a physical examination and take a blood sample to guide treatment and identify underlying cause/s. Chronic cases may also require a urine sample and muscle biopsy. Most horses suffering from Monday Morning Disease can be managed by dietary changes and a gradual increase in exercise. After resting or exercising less over winter it is important to not suddenly over-work your horse. Start out with light exercise and gradually increase training as your horse gets back in to fitness. Horses fed on a high grain diet are more likely to suffer than those fed on a low-grain and highfat diet. If your horse is prone to developing Monday Morning Disease he should be kept on hay or grass, with minimal grain or sweet feed supplements. Vitamins and mineral supplements may be added as needed to make up a complete and balanced diet. To meet energy requirements a fat source can be included in the diet, such as vegetable oil.
