elcome to another edition of your handy local magazine!

Have you had a good start to 2017? Ours was busy as always. There’s nothing like a print deadline to focus minds and get us straight back to work after the New Year. Luckily, Nicky’s chirpy disposition always lightens the day! Reflecting on 2016 it is hard not to wonder what effect the huge changes, both in UK and globally, will have in 2017 and beyond. Brexit and the election of Donald Trump will make for an interesting year. In our personal lives and businesses it’s not a bad thing to periodically jolt the status quo. It has to be a good thing that 2016 inspired more people to take an interest, and have a view on, what’s happening locally and around the world. In my own house, my two teenage children, have been gamefully politicising and philosophising all over the Christmas holidays; whilst I’ve tended to stick with the sherry! One of them is now applying to study politics at university next year, a choice of subject we never thought likely a few years ago! As a small business owner I’m more mindful of what might affect my business. I’m just keen for stability in 2017 so that we can continue to grow the business. Such concerns about the economy will be the same for many businesses in the area. Spare a thought for your local independents and use them where possible. Enjoy fresh food and drink from your local shops, use local tradesmen for your home and spend locally on interiors, fashion, gardens, vehicles (and even advertising!) as much as possible. This way we can all ensure the prosperity of our local areas. And with all this political discussion, my aim this month is to steer more tea time conversations towards music or the weather; and to have less sherry! Well done to Amanda Stewart of Haxby for winning our December competition. Until next month…

SEASON OF KID’S FILMS at The Folk Hall, New Earswick Earswick School, provided a fun filled afternoon for lots of families. They are now gearing up for three more films over the next three months, which have been funded by the City of York Council ward committee.

Film at the Folk Hall, the community cinema operating out of the beautiful Folk Hall in New Earswick, successfully launched their season of kid’s films in December. Their screening of the live action remake of Disney’s The Jungle Book was very well attended and their volunteers, along with volunteers from Friends of New

Sam Watling, chair of the group said: “We are very lucky to have received this funding from the City of York Council to allow us to put on these additional films. We are constantly trying to provide new and fun ways to connect a variety of audiences with film and give them local opportunities to enjoy quality cinema without the price tag. Friends of New Earswick School, who are fundraising for school play equipment, have also assisted us in organising and

running the activities and events and so it’s very much a community venture”. ‘We hope you will keep an eye out for our next films on Sundays 19th February, 12th March and 9th April which we will select with help from New Earswick School children. We are running these events for only £1 per person including a drink and biscuit and tickets will be available from the Folk Hall a month before the screenings”. Tickets from The Folk Hall, Hawthorn Terrace, York, YO32 4AQ from 9am-5pm or telephone 01904 769621 or online via www.filmfolkhall.com

Local lady turns care for the elderly on its head in Harrogate and York

BAY WINDOW SPECIALISTS

T: 01904 501501 www.arturablinds.co.uk

Elderly care isn’t something many of us think about until our loved ones begin to struggle at home. At that point, many of us would take the typical route of looking into residential care homes. And that’s the point we’re faced with an enormous decision… “Should I remove the person I love from their home and belongings?” This conversation can upset and disrupt families. Combine this with the guilt felt by many families that live great distances from their parents, and the implications this can have are severe. But there is a solution… Tahira Rahman has recently opened the Harrogate and York branch of Promedica24, to tackle this increasing problem. Promedica24 offer a 24 hour live-in care service as a genuine alternative to residential care. From simple companionship and support with everyday tasks to more advanced requirements such as dementia, disability and endof-life care, all from the comfort of home.

Tahira commented “I believe passionately that we should all have the choice to live comfortably, in safety, and with dignity, surrounded by the memories that have shaped our lives. Families often turn to residential care as it is believed to be the only affordable way to put their mind at rest. Live-in care is not for the elite, it is very much affordable, costing around the same as a residential home.” Both healthcare professionals and the families of those affected recognise the benefits of caring for patients in the comfort of their own homes. Live-in care helps the elderly to retain independence and dignity whilst safely receiving an individual service, tailored to their specific needs. Care home or YOUR home? You do have a choice... We are Europe’s largest live-in care provider. Our expert care workers live in your home with you, 24-7 as a companion, a carer and a friend. Get the care you need, want and deserve, in the comfort of your own home. We offer a genuine alternative to residential care homes. Our mission is to give elderly and vulnerable people the opportunity to remain safely in their own homes by providing 24 hour, live-in care. Each carer is matched to you based on personality, hobbies and interests as well as overall care needs. This means there’s some common ground from day one and genuine friendships blossom. Maybe you’re cared for by a family member who just needs a break, or you need help getting back on your feet after a hospital stay. Perhaps you simply require a companion to help with day-to-day tasks such as cooking, cleaning and shopping. Our packages cover all this and range

from short term solutions through to ongoing support. We also offer complex care packages for those with more advanced care needs such as Dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s and palliative end-of-life care. Because our care packages are tailored to meet your individual needs, we ensure you retain as much independence and dignity as possible. The standard of care and attention to detail making sure Mum was well cared for and had all she needed was excellent. They took time to get to know Mum, listen to her stories, look at photos with her, learn her likes and dislikes and show an interest in Mum’s life experiences. Joanne L. - August 2016

Your one-to-one live-in companion/care package starts from just £695pw If you would like an informal chat or you would like to know more please get in touch with Tahira on 07967 239 086 or 01423 205 019 or visit www.promedica24.co.uk/harrogate-york

The Big Life Fix In York REMAP had almost 100 panels in England, Wales and Scotland alleviating disability by finding novel solutions matched to the precise needs of an individual. The demand for one-off solutions and adaptations has kept pace with the commercial development of technical aids. There is an active REMAP panel in York, who would be happy to help solve your problems for which there is no solution currently on the market. Within this panel of volunteer engineers there is a wide variety of expertise.

Have you been watching ‘The Big Life Fix’ with Simon Reeve on BBC TWO before Christmas?

More information can be found on the website at york.remap.org.uk If you are disabled and have a problem that no one has been able to solve, why not ask them for help?

It is an excellent programme where a team of experts solve long standing problems to give various disabled people a better quality of life. This programme was made with the help of REMAP, a national organisation founded in 1964 at ICI Billingham to devise technical aids for a polio sufferer. By 1990

SHORT STORY EVERYONE LIES by Jackie Brewster “Put this on, mate.” Craig threw the crumpled tee-shirt at Gary. “We’ve got to get you looking the part for your big date.”

singer,” Gary shrugged. “I suppose I’ll soon find out.”

“It smells like wet dog,” Gary winced. “Why can’t I just wear my normal clothes?”

“Brenda.”

“Because this, my friend, is the shirt you’re wearing in your dating profile picture.” Craig watched as Gary squeezed into the threadbare shirt. “Aren’t you amazed I’ve kept it all these years?” “I can’t move my arms,” Gary said. “Remind me why I have to wear this?”

“Does this lucky lady have a name?” Craig asked. “You’re kidding!” Craig snorted. “How old did she say she was?” “Same age as me, mid-thirties.” “No lasses our age are called Brenda,” Craig sniggered. “I knew it was too good to be true.” “Why would she lie?” Gary asked.

“So the young lady can’t accuse you of using a photo that’s ten years out of date.”

“Everyone lies, that’s what I keep saying. Let’s have a look at her profile pic.” He opened Gary’s laptop. “I bet it’s in black and white.”

“But it is ten years out of date,” Gary complained. “Surely when she sees me she’ll notice that I have less hair and more girth?”

“Give that to me.” Gary wrestled the keyboard back. “Here she is, Brenda Buttons. Gorgeous isn’t she?”

“Yeah, but by then you’ll be on the date,” Craig said, “and it’ll be too late to back out. And besides, everyone lies on these internet dating sites. When are you meeting her?”

Craig stared at the screen and nearly choked.

“In an hour.” Gary tugged at the tee-shirt. “And what’s she like?” “She’s single and pretty,” he grinned. “She’s got lovely eyes and long brown hair.” “Punching well above your weight,” Craig nodded approvingly. “What does she do for a living?” “She did work in a school, but now she’s started a career in entertainment.” “Entertainment?” Craig frowned. “What’s that all about?” “I don’t know, perhaps she’s a 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“She’s pulled a right fast one on you,” he chuckled. “That’s Kate Middleton.”

“She hauled us in front of the Head after you sprayed yourself with ketchup pretending you had a nosebleed.” “Oh yeah,” Gary grinned, “I remember that.” “That was Brenda Buttons.” Craig folded his arms and smirked. “She’s your hot date.” “She can’t be,” Gary said. “She’d be about a hundred now.” “Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified. “You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.” “It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?”

“Who?”

The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen.

“Married to Prince William.” Craig clutched his sides. “Gary, you’re such a berk.”

“She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.”

“Perhaps she just looks like her?” Gary said.

“Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.”

“Mate, not even in your wildest dreams,” Craig laughed. “Wait, Brenda Buttons! You said she used to work in a school. Wasn’t one of our dinner ladies called that?” “I can’t remember.” “Yeah you can. She was a right battle axe.” “Which one?”

Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life.

ver the last five years there have been big changes at the Memorial Hall. Thanks to the overwhelming financial and community support from within Haxby and Wigginton, the roof is now watertight with only one section still to be completed. The heating is much more efficient following the installation of a new boiler and roof insulation. The building is in good shape, the use of the facilities is much increased and the cost of hiring a room is very competitive. Haxby & Wigginton residents and registered charities can also hire a room at special reduced rates. The Hall is very busy with activities catering for all age ranges including Baby Sensory, Toddler Sense, Football Tots, Rugby Tots, Children’s birthday parties, Dance classes on various afternoons and evenings, Band practice sessions, Charity coffee mornings, Music tuition, Wedding receptions, Dinner dances, Scottish dancing and many others. So, to improve the facilities for the future, and in line with a survey carried out some years ago, the Trustees have had plans for expansion drawn up which have been approved and passed by the Planning Department at City of York Council.

Whilst the City of York Council are working with the Trustees on the construction of the Library, the funding for the remainder of the expansion work relies on fundraising. Please show your support by taking a few minutes to complete the following online survey.

The plans include additional spaces for community use, an increase in the size of the main room to accommodate bigger events, a new kitchen and new toilets.

If you are a current customer who hires space at the hall, please go to; https://www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ TV93SYT

Following the recent closure of the Library in Station Road, the need to expand has become even more urgent, following the exciting announcement that the new Library and Explore Centre will be situated to the right side of the Memorial Hall as seen from the road, with the entrance near the bus stop.

If you currently attend events or activities at the hall, please go to; https://www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ TVHXJHT

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Paul Robson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. 31st March is Daffodil Day! Marie Curie’s biggest campaign, The Great Daffodil Appeal, is taking place all throughout March and culminating on 31st March with Daffodil Day. This year, we want everyone to take part in the appeal, whether that’s volunteering to collect, holding a fundraising event or donating to Marie Curie, with everyone wearing their daffodil on Friday 31st March as an act of solidarity together. There are so many ways to get involved in the appeal, you could hold a ‘Wear Yellow Day’ at work or school, sell some daffodil themed cakes, volunteer to collect at your nearest location, or do some sort of fundraising that fits in with your schedule to raise money for the Marie Curie nursing service. Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser said: “Last year’s appeal raised £6 million nationally, and we want to make this year’s even bigger and better, with the whole campaign concluding on Daffodil Day. We especially need more people to sign up to collect for an hour or two – it’s so easy, and from just a couple of hours collecting, you could raise enough to pay for a couple of hours of nursing care.” Collections taking place in and around York are: York Street Collection: 23rd & 25th Feb Tesco, Clifton Moor: 26th Feb York Train Station: 3rd, 4th & 5th March Waitrose, Foss Islands Road: 10th, 11th & 12th March Morrisons, Foss Islands Road: 10th, 11th & 12th March Morrisons, Acomb: 10th, 11th & 12th March Vangarde Shopping Park: 18th March McArthur Glen Designer Outlet: 18th & 19th March Monks Cross Shopping Park: 25th March Acomb Street Collection: 25th March Haxby Street Collection: 25th March For more information please contact Jennifer Carmichael on 01904 755260 or email Jennifer.carmichael@mariecurie.org.uk 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

good way to ask questions of your local officers or to request an update on an ongoing investigation. In this case just select option 2 when calling 101 and ask for the Officer by their collar number, eg 1 2 3 4, and your call will be put through to their personal radio.

WHO DO YOU CALL? By Andy Smith, PCSO 5520 There is often some confusion as to which organisation you should call or even in some cases which phone number you should use to contact them. With the availability of email, twitter and Facebook sites, there are now other ways to contact people without even using a telephone.

The Police are not always the right people to call to try and solve a problem. If you are a tenant of a Housing Association or similar it is often more appropriate to contact them direct as they have many powers to deal with anti social behaviour related to their properties. The Police will work with Housing Associations across the City to assist them where required. If you are experiencing problems with a noisy neighbour then the best people to contact are City of York Council on 01904 551555. If you are in any doubt as to who is best placed to assist you, if you see your local PCSO they are always available to offer you advice as to the best person for you to contact.

Everybody knows that to contact the Police or another Emergency Service that 999 is the emergency number. Despite numerous appeals to the public to only use this number in the case of an emergency it is still used on a number of calls that are far from an emergency. We would never discourage people from using the 999 service but would just stress that it is for emergencies only. If you genuinely believe that you need the Police with you immediately then this is the number to call but please use an alternative if your call is not urgent. The non emergency number for the Police is 101. This number will offer you several options and the option to report an incident will put you through to the same Control Room as a 999 call. The only difference between the two numbers is that you may have a short wait for your call to be answered when using 101. Should the staff in the Control Room believe that on listening to your call that it is an emergency then Officers will still be dispatched immediately from the use of the 101 number. This does happen particularly with calls from members of the public who state that they “don’t want to waste your time but…”. There is another option when calling 101 to speak to an individual Officer. It should be stressed that this is not an option to report a new incident but it is a 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Eric began as a manager of the office on 4th January 1977 and took over the business in 1992 and it remains a success until this day. In this time the travel agency has built up a fine reputation within the local community and in April of last year they were recognised as one of the ‘TOP 50’ travel agents within the UK by the Travel Trade Gazette. The main part of the celebrations will take place on Ruby Tuesday on 24 January and Eric and his team will welcome customers and members of the local community to join them for some cake and celebrations. Any customers who make a booking with the agency on this day will all receive a bottle of bubbly. There will be a prize draw on the day, where customers can win holiday vouchers, a luxury bathrobe, bottles of champagne and an Italian hamper will be up for grabs. In the lead up to the anniversary the team have organised birthday messages from 31 of their chosen operators, with their logos on, to include in an incentive piece they are producing for the peak booking months of January and February. The Acomb sales team is made up of three members of staff. Avril Barrett, Tracey Hodgson and the newest member of the team, Suzi Anderson who started in May last year. Eric’s wife, Samantha, looks after all the marketing activity. Eric Walton says: “A good business is based on the people who work within that business and I am so lucky to have such a great team working for Acomb Travel. Success is built upon success and we hope to be serving the local community for many years to come” Acomb Travel is part of the Advantage Travel Partnership, the largest independent travel agent network in the UK. Bergen - Norway

haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen.

N

estling between the seven mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway’s second city is one of the prettiest towns on the southwest coast. Bright, colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world. Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It’s sheer magic, a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour. Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen’s maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity.

36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Today the finely restored merchants’ houses are the city’s most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf. It’s a world heritage site and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water’s edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer sausages half a metre long, while the fish market serves simple but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean. It’s easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the

Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in secluded courtyards. Roses bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark. But according to a local saying, ‘you haven’t been to Bergen if you haven’t been to Ulriken,’ at 643 metres the highest of the seven mountains. As visitors step out of the cable car, many linger on the viewing platform, overwhelmed by the panorama and the cool mountain air, but when the last shreds of mist melt away, the more adventurous head for the summit strewn with boulders and rocks. There are bogs and ponds, wild rabbits, mossy grass, but in this wild open land the mountains are as stunning as the city glistening far below, garlanded in fjords and islands.

JORVIK Viking Festival 2017 Europe’s largest Viking Festival. 20th – 26th February

T

he story of Eric Bloodaxe’s last days in York will be woven into this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival, which takes place in York from 20 – 26 February 2016 – with new venues for even larger events including his ultimate feast and a dramatic retelling of the Battle of Stainmore, which can have only one conclusion for the infamous Viking king. “For the last three years, the JORVIK Viking Festival has grown and now draws even larger audiences from across the world, so with JORVIK Viking Centre’s re-opening set for April, we want to make sure that this year’s event is an epic prequel to the story we will tell in the re-imagined JORVIK,” comments marketing manager, Paul Whiting.” The epic finale of the Festival (Saturday 25 February) will tell the story of the Battle of Stainmore – where Eric Bloodaxe unsuccessfully made his last stand – and will be hosted for the first time at Rawcliffe Country Park, where a natural arena will enable larger crowds to enjoy the furious fiery finale, which will combine living history displays with hundreds of warriors taking to the field of combat to determine the fate of the Kingdom of JORVIK Tickets cost £13.50 for adults and £10.50 for concessions, with family tickets (two adults and two children) for £40.50 or £52.50 for two adults and three children. Alongside the paid-for events, there will be a host of free activities for visitors to enjoy, including the annual Strongest Viking Competition, which returns home to the Coppergate Centre, the March to Coppergate from Dean’s Park, and the Best Beard Competition (all Saturday 25 February). For those visiting York during the half-term week, there will be a free encampment (Mon – Sat) in Coppergate and the Festival Hub will be located in Parliament Street.

Other highlight activities in this year’s festival include: • Have-a-go archery and sword combat in St Sampson’s Square (Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4pm) • Norse Nalebinding workshops, led by one of the world’s top Viking knitting experts, Mari Wickerts of Gothenburg Museum. • Lectures and workshops with author Justin Hill (23 February from 10am to 1pm) • 1066! The End of History, a new presentation by Peter Carrington-Porter at St Helen’s Church. Explore dramatic storytelling of one of the most mysterious periods of this country’s history!

The garden of DIG in St Saviourgate will play host to this year’s Viking Steading, with a wide range of domesticated animals to see and pet – a welcome return of animals to the city centre where they would have lived alongside their owners 1000 years ago!

Alongside the dramatic events of the Festival, those wanting to further explore the latest Viking research can meet the archaeological experts from York Archaeological Trust, and enjoy lectures from eminent speakers.

A full calendar of events in this year’s festival is available online at www.jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk where tickets for key events can also be booked. More details can also be found on social media by using #JVF17. 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Valentine’s Day is upon us once again and love is in the air. You might be thinking about looking your best including a super dazzling smile, however good oral health is also essential for your general health. Heart Disease has been linked in several studies to poor Oral Health including Poor Gum Health (Gum Disease). Many people are unaware they have gum disease as it is almost always not a problem or painful until it is advanced. The best way it can be detected and treated is by regular visits to the dentist. If you have noticed any loose teeth or gaps appearing between your teeth as the gums have shrunken back you almost certainly will have Gum Disease. The good news is that we can do much more to help you keep your teeth if it is caught EARLY.

Good homecare can really help to prevent gum disease so invest in a good quality round headed electric brush if you can and concentrate on the inside surfaces of the teeth as much as the outer surfaces you can see. Your dentist can advise you on the best technique for cleaning your teeth as we are all different, the same goes for interdental cleaning, cleaning properly between your teeth is most important its one of the first areas we see bone loss and the reason you get the black spaces between your teeth. So don’t delay speak to your dentist about how you can maximise your gum health and reduce the risk to your heart. For tailored advice please call Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

Catch them at the Rowntree before you see them in the West End!

23-25 FEBRUARY The Gondoliers

The University of York Gilbert & Sullivan Society. \the gondolier brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri are the most charming bachelors in all of Venice, and today they will each choose a bride. All is well for 30 happy minutes - until the Grand Inquisitor of Spain appears to inform the brothers that one of them is in fact the son of the late King of Barataria. The only problem is, nobody is quite sure which brother it is. Elsewhere, the penniless Duke of Plaza-Toro and his overbearing wife arrive from Spain to seek the king, who was married to their daughter Casilda when they were both infants. Unfortunately for Casilda, she is already in love with Luiz the drummer boy. Will any of our couples get their happy ending? The Gondoliers will be our 45th main show since the society’s formation in 1972, and with a stellar cast and cleverly updated script, it promises to be one of our best shows yet!

Still to come are our Burns’ celebration, an evening of entertainment, celebrating the wonders of the Scottish Isles and we round off the year with a Gardeners Questions evening. Our Ladies Circle meets monthly from May to October and we enjoy a delicious lunch in good company and are often entertained by very interesting speakers. The Snowdrop Spectacular runs from the 4th February to the 5th March 2017, from 11am to 4pm each day. At the end of the snowdrop opening, Burton Agnes holds its annual Orchid Festival on the weekend of 4th and 5th March. There will be stunning exhibitions in the Hall, and flower sales. Expert advisors will give talks and take questions about how to care for orchids, and there will be slide shows and stalls selling orchid related goods.

NEW YEAR’S (BUSINESS) RESOLUTIONS

C

hristmas may now be a distant memory, but January is well underway and is the perfect time to make resolutions for the New Year which awaits us. Perhaps you have already booked a gym induction, started to eat more healthily, or decided to drink a bit more lemonade and not so much beer. As well as making personal resolutions, now is the perfect time to take stock of your finances, review your business or even take the plunge and start your own business.

Streamline your business Kick start the New Year by getting your business in order. Here are some simple ideas for making 2017 a prosperous one, all of which we can help and advise you on:

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

Keep ALL your receipts – you will be surprised how those small amounts you spend on stamps, stationery and petrol soon add up. Make sure you keep receipts for anything you buy for your business these can help reduce your tax bill. Budget for your tax bill – by keeping your books in order, and keeping ALL your receipts, you will be able to get an idea of how much your tax will be well before the deadline. This way you don’t get any nasty surprises! Review your business structure – once you know how much your tax bill is, you may want to look at whether your business is structured in the best way, e.g. you could save tax by trading as a Limited Company.

Start your own business

Make time to make a business plan – as any small business owner will say (me included) there aren’t enough hours in the day, however, every business needs some form of business plan. Make sure you set time aside to think about your aims, set realistic goals and consider how you can achieve these.

If you have always dreamt of owning your own business, why not make this dream a reality in 2017.

Get your books in order – the thought of bookkeeping may send shivers down your spine, but good records can give you a picture of how your business is performing, pinpoint problems and identify potential opportunities.

That’s where we fit in. We can advise on how to get your business off the ground, help you get the most out of it and free up your time to concentrate at what you are good at.

Whether you want to make some extra money from your hobby or fancy putting your skills into action, taking that first step can be a daunting prospect.

If you need help getting your business into shape or are thinking of starting your own business then contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director - email phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk PCLG, Chartered Accountants is a friendly York based firm of Accountants offering a complete range of accountancy, tax, audit and business services throughout Yorkshire www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 55

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RASPBERRY & VANILLA PANNA COTTA Serves 4. Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling

These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat! INGREDIENTS:

• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed • 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring

TO SERVE:

• 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally • Fresh raspberries

1. To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool. Chill in the fridge until set. 2. When jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity). 3. For the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from heat. 4. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set. 5. To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.

MOTORING

By James Baggott

Super-Size America Doesn’t Extend To LA Auto Show

James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State. For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it. It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bitesized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously. Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-do-we-need-it MercedesMaybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red, which is redder than the last red. Understood? Good.

Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so. Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor. However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulf-liveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

2016 saw a lot of negative media, affecting all areas of social, economic and political life. Alongside the plethora of celebrity deaths, many people felt devastated about Britain leaving the European Union and Trump’s election in America. However, I think a large tragedy of 2016 was the focus on tragedy itself: the news rarely reports good news. In the first week of January 2017 alone, there were so many incredible news stories unreported to the main public eye! For example, the Obama administration denied six permits for oil and gas exploitations of the Atlantic Coast - securing the safety of whales, dolphins and many other sea creatures. In the medical world, the Xstat finally obtained approval; a syringe-like device which injects mini expanding sponges into a fatal wound, creating a barrier against blood flow within 20 seconds. This innovative device is monumental in the number of lives it will be able to save, as it can soak up blood for up to four hours! In terms of saving the planet, a Kenyan man came up with an ingenious solution to plastic waste building up on beaches in his city. Aghan combined polythene products (such as plastic bottles) with sand to create cheap, durable fencing, which will help reduce the number of trees being cut down as well.

So why do we often focus on the negative, or tend to see the negative side of things more? Biologically, it’s unavoidable. Our brains are more highly attuned to negative news because we have a greater sensitivity towards it; there is a stronger surge in electrical activity towards negative stimuli, and for good reason... Danger! It is believed we have evolved this way to keep us safe - a survival instinct making it unavoidable for us to notice potential danger. However, although negative news is very important to recognise, I believe good news can be just as important. Hearing good news is inspiring, it reveals to us hidden heroes in our world and miraculous breakthroughs, restoring hope and humanity when life seems grim. So when the world is looking bleak, remember there is so much good too.

LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

VELVET UNDERGROUND

by Pippa Greenwood

They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills

over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once

has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next.

Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either.

Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try!

If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings!

Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a

LOVE THEM RIGHT!!!

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

With Valentine’s day fast approaching, love is in the air and tis’ the season to love your pets, but are you loving them too much ? Now’s the time to love them right !!! We all love to treat our pets and we’re all guilty of just giving them a little morsel of our food and even extra treats of their own, but unfortunately this could be causing them more harm than good. Overfeeding your pet or even just feeding the wrong foods can lead to them becoming overweight and obese, which can cause serious health problems and even leave them with long term life threatening diseases. Some pets can even be more prone to being overweight depending on breed, age and neuter status, so it may be that they just need a few simple adjustments to their daily routine to combat this.

A CHATTY PAIR LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME.. Leo & Nala are a fine looking pair of Bengal cats that were brought into York Cats protection after their previous owners separated. Like all Bengals they are chatty creatures and are always eager to greet you, especially if you have a couple of bowls of food in your hand. These two are in the prime of their lives and will need a new home where they have plenty of space to run around and burn off all that feline energy – of which they have oodles of! Leo & Nala are both very friendly and playful and will make fantastic family pets, though perhaps their forward nature would be a bit daunting for small children. If you would like to consider adopting this fine pair then please call the Centre on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york.cats.org.uk for further details.

Pepper is a very affectionate and loving girl. Her ideal home would be as the only pet with adults who have previously owned terriers or have experience in training dogs. She is full of energy, so an active home would help in keeping her happy. She is having training with our behaviourist and any new adopters will need to carry on with her training programme, which she really enjoys. Dudley was found as a stray so we have no history of him. Dudley is a very sweet and friendly young boy with an excellent temperament. He is sociable with most dogs so could possibly live with a compatible one. He would be suitable to live with children of secondary school age. Dudley is full of energy so an active home would be ideal for him. 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE body size in good quality hay. If you are going to change your rabbit’s diet, please do so gradually over 2-4 weeks as rabbits have a very sensitive digestion and need time to adjust to new foods.

RABBITS

With the winter weather well and truly taking hold, many of us are less than keen to be spending as much time outdoors as we would in warmer times. In the winter it is important to consider our small pets that live outdoors - they still need our care, attention and companionship. As the third most popular pet in Britain, rabbits needs are often not thought about after the initial excitement of bringing home that cute little ball of fur. They are often left in a small cage with only their basic needs for survival met. Rabbits are intelligent creatures that need space, exercise, companionship and stimulation. Wild rabbits can cover an area equivilent to 30 football pitches and live in large social groups where they have companionship, groom each other and huddle together for warmth. Domestic rabbits share the same needs. In a hutch, a rabbit should be able to manage at least 3 full hops across their accommodation (usually at least 6’ x 2’ x 2’) and the space should have suitable safe toys and shelter to keep the rabbit amused and stimulated. The hutch should have a dry, draught-free area filled with bedding to keep the rabbit warm and secure. A hutch should not be the rabbit’s only living space, they should also have access to a run of at least 8’ x 6’. Giving your rabbit a healthy, formulated diet that is high in fibre is extremely important. Feeding a nugget type of food is best so they can’t just eat selected bits. Rabbits also need some fresh greens such as kale, spinach or savoy cabbage, but take care as some foods are too ‘rich’ for rabbits so please research before offering new foods. It is very important to give rabbits hay, and lots of it! Rabbits should be fed at least their own

It is very important that you spend time with your rabbit and, if possible, other rabbits (though you must consider having the rabbits neutered if keeping them together). Seeing rabbits living together with enough room to display their natural behaviours is a joy to watch and knowing that you have given your rabbit(s) everything they need to live a full and contented life is extremely rewarding. If you are considering getting a rabbit or are concerned you are not meeting your rabbit’s needs and would like some advise and guidence please contact us at Station House Vets for a free clinic with one of our Veterinary Nurses. If you are have concerns regarding the health of your rabbit please make an appointment to see a vet. PAGE TURNERS Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night.

The Silkworm – Robert Galbraith

(J.K. Rowling) Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a missing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hardboiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

The Bear and The Nightingale –

Katherine Arden In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away from their centuries-old traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first page.

Hygge – Charlotte Abrahams

The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life.

The Girl Before – JP Delaney

At first glance One Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether 74 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books.

The Phantom Tree – Nicola Cornick

Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was expecting. Historical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine.

The Lauras – Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling. Three Daughters of Eve - Elif Shafak

Peri spent her childhood negotiating the distance between her parents. Now she acts the part of a dutiful, Turkish housewife. But when a half-forgotten photograph reminds her of long ago freedoms, Peri struggles to keep up the charade. She can’t help but look back to her days as a student in Oxford, the choices she made, the friends she left behind and the scandal that tore everything apart.
