elcome to our February edition. As I’m writing (at the beginning of January) we’re embarking on a new household diet. It all started in between Christmas and New Year, when, feeling stuffed with meat and yummy Christmas chocolates, we all felt that a change was going to be necessary. Like many people this year, my daughter was all in favour of going the whole hog (!) and doing ‘veganuary’. I’ve never really been tempted by going vegan. I understand that it is probably healthier and more sustainable to the planet but I just find it hard to believe we can survive on a diet of simply plants. After the look of horror on my other half ’s face (especially after he realised that cheese was off the menu) we decided that dairy-free pescatarian was an easier diet to keep to. Apparently this is eating occasional fish and eggs but no dairy or meat. So, we’re currently on day 6 and how’s it going? I trying, I really am, but there’s just still too much left over Christmas food to make a real go of it. We’ve managed vegan lunches this week – well, most of the week. I even baked some banana, apple and nut flapjack bites to keep me going (desperation!). My daughter has cooked a couple of tasty meals for us without meat or dairy and I now have a variety of lentils, chick peas and beans in the cupboard ready for all of those vegan recipes. Perhaps it will get easier? And I know we will feel the benefits…soon. February is usually a quiet month for events but there seems to be more going on than usual at this time of year. York Literature Festival has a full range of events to appeal to everyone and we have the full listings in our centre pages this month.

Astrophysicist Tim O’Brien at North York Moors Dark Skies Festival

well-known astrophysicist and popular media commentator on space matters will raise the curtain on the North York Moors Dark Skies Festival this February. Tim O’Brien, who is professor of astrophysics at the University of Manchester and associate director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, will shed light on some of the greatest cosmic curiosities at the opening event of the fourth annual Dark Skies Festival (15 February – 3 March 2019). Speaking in the atmospheric surroundings of Castle Howard, Prof O’Brien, who makes regular appearances on BBC Radio Five Live and Breakfast TV, as well as having featured on Stargazing Live and Radio 4’s Life Scientific, will captivate an audience with his ‘Our Place in the Universe’ talk. The Festival’s packed programme of events will then roll out over the fortnight with more than 100 events across the National Park and the Howardian

Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Some of the events will be themed around the moon to celebrate the 50th anniversary year of the first moon landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and because the first week of the Festival will coincide with a Full Moon phase. Visitors can expect moon and stargazing sessions, together with cycling, running and walking events in woodland, across the moors and in coastal villages under starry skies as well as family crafting activities such as rocket-making. The National Park has three Dark Sky Discovery sites where skies are sufficiently dark to potentially view the Milky Way with the naked eye. The sites are located at The Moors National Park Centre at Danby, Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest. Further programme information and booking details are available at www.darkskiesnationalparks. org.uk. A number of events will be free while others will have a small charge attached.

Wagner

Parsifal

WEDNESDAY 17TH APRIL 2019 7.30pm / York Minster

SIR MARK ELDER (CONDUCTOR) HALLÉ ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR NICKY SPENCE (PARSIFAL) IAIN PATERSON (AMFORTAS) GABOR BRETZ (GURNEMANZ)

Wagner – Prelude to Act 1 and Act 3 of Parsifal For his final masterpiece, Wagner turned towards the sacred realm, aiming to compose a work in which ‘the most sublime mysteries of the Christian faith are openly presented on stage’. It re-tells the ancient story of Parsifal, a ‘holy fool’ made wise through pity and redeemed by a simple act of compassion. Act III is the spiritual heart and emotional climax of the work, as Parsifal fulfils his journey towards understanding. It includes the magnificent Good Friday Music which celebrates the day on which the world is renewed – a moving paean to the beauty of nature and the eternal renewal of springtime. ‘The hero’s path to compassion and understanding can be a metaphor’ says Pope Francis, ‘to better understand how human beings understand themselves today.’

Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé are renowned for their performances of this work. Their 2013 Proms performance was described by The Guardian as ‘a constant wonder’ and by The Spectator as ‘miraculous’, while for The Daily Telegraph he and the orchestra found the ‘spiritual halo’ and ‘all the essential pain and anguish’ of the work. Heard in York Minster during Holy Week, with singers from York University augmenting the Hallé forces, this will surely be an unforgettable performance. ‘Elder’s single-minded patience creates a powerful and quietly hypnotic sense of weary sadness…controlling everything with the surest of touches right up until a deeply moving account of the final bars’ – Gramophone

Tickets from £20 to £50 – please call the Box Office for details

DB OR NOT DB? THAT IS THE QUESTION By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at Pen Life Associates There’s a lot of nonsense being bandied around on pension transfers. Tens of thousands of British Steel workers were forced to make quick decisions about very complex pension matters. Which could affect them and their families for the rest of their lives. And even beyond. Most find these options completely overwhelming. And legally, you can’t transfer this type of pension without taking professional advice. But there are some unscrupulous ‘advisers’ who might take advantage of that fact for their own gain. And - to make matters worse - there are some well-meaning but clueless bystanders. (Did you see I stopped myself short of saying media monkeys.) They’re also wading into the arena with their generic, so-called‘advice’. The fact is, every single individual will have completely different circumstances and objectives. There simply isn’t a one size fits all solution. And this dilemma isn’t exclusively affecting British Steel workers. Hundreds of thousands of people have ‘final salary’ (otherwise known as ‘defined benefit’ or ‘occupational pension benefits’) schemes. And they all face the same decision. This affects ex-employees of companies like National Grid, Arcadia, most of the UK banks, and closer to home, Rowntree/Nestle and Aviva. The standard advice was always to leave these schemes well alone. But then George Osbourne introduced pension freedom rules in 2015, which allow unrestricted access to personal pension funds… This, and the eye-wateringly high transfer values currently being offered by these schemes, has changed everything. Whether you ‘stick or twist’ now depends on a whole heap of factors. And these factors are completely different for everyone. We have advised hundreds of clients on these types of pensions and we’ve never seen two cases that were the same. The decisions you make around these pensions will affect you and your family for the rest of your lives – and potentially into future generations. Which is why you have to be certain you understand your choices. This is why we host our free seminars – to help people fully understand the decision they have to make. At our next seminar we will explain the differences between defined benefit and defined contribution pensions. And all the things you’ll need to think very carefully about before making any decisions – things you may have never even heard of. Read on to find out how you can sign up to attend our straight-talking, informative presentation. If you would like to bring a friend or colleague with you who you believe would also be interested, please confirm their full name as well as your own when you get in touch.

he House of Lords was the historic setting for the launch of a Malton charity’s global awareness campaign on January 15. The Encephalitis Society travelled to London to start the countdown to the sixth annual World Encephalitis Day on February 22. Staff and supporters were hosted by Baroness McIntosh of Pickering in her role as vice president of the charity which helps people affected by the condition, an inflammation of the brain. Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of the Encephalitis Society, said: “We are grateful to Baroness McIntosh for arranging our visit to the House of Lords and what we hope will be the start of another successful World Encephalitis Day campaign. “Statistics reveal that 78 per cent of people do not know what encephalitis is – this is despite the condition affecting 500,000 people each year, irrespective of their age, gender or country. This is why we put so much effort into campaigns such as World Encephalitis Day which hold the key to our long-term ambitions of making the general public aware of a condition which affects more people than bacterial meningitis and Motor Neurone Disease.” This year’s campaign will see the charity, which is based on Castlegate, Malton, invite people to download its award-winning smartphone App and take part in a virtual journey to key locations relevant to the condition. Supporters are also being encouraged to wear something red on World Encephalitis Day and share their photos on social media, telling their friends and followers about the condition and why it is important to them. Dr Easton added: “We are very proud of what we have achieved with World Encephalitis Day over the past several years. The Encephalitis Society reaches tens of millions of people through our campaign each year and, slowly but surely, we are confident we will live in a world where the vast majority of the public are aware of encephalitis.” For more information, visit www.worldencephalitisday.org 22 | Handy Mag | February 2019

Displaying Art in your Home

A

rt on your walls is the essential addition to any room, transforming it into a personal space. Don’t treat art as an afterthought, but give as much care and attention to choosing and hanging drawings, paintings and photographs as you would to choosing fabrics and furnishings. Above the sitting room mantelpiece is often an optimal location, but any room in which you spend a lot of time is ideal, such as the kitchen (away from humidity and splashes), family room or conservatory. Direct sunlight can damage precious works, so use special protective glass if necessary, or find a more suitable spot. Bigger pieces need an expansive space while smaller works may look odd when hung on their own on a large wall – in 24 | Handy Mag | January 2019

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR FAVOURITE PAINTINGS OR PHOTOGRAPHS BY INTEGRATING THEM WITHIN YOUR DECORATING SCHEME which case, either find a niche wall to hang a smaller work or create a grouping of pieces that work together, by colour, theme or subject matter. Pairs of complementary pictures make a nicely symmetrical display, while informal groups, perhaps with a variety of frames

and hung asymmetrically, create a sense of intimacy and individuality. Alternatively, group identically framed works of the same size and shape in closely packed rows – a formal design particularly well suited to a dining room or a hallway. A white wall (as in art galleries) is not the only choice of backdrop. You could pick a colour from the painting and replicate it on your wall, or even hang works against wallpaper using complementary colours – but pick a small pattern to use as a backdrop to a sizeable work. Light works of art so they can be seen properly after dark, perhaps by using a table or floor lamp to cast a glow towards them. For a more formal, professional effect, use either traditional picture lights fitted above the work or a discreet track and spotlight. LED bulbs are recommended but make sure the colour ‘temperature’ is neither too ‘cold’ and white or too ‘warm’ and yellow. For real detail, choose a bulb with excellent colour rendition at 95CRI or above. Height is dictated by personal preference, the size and shape of the piece, the room’s proportions and the surroundings. Museums and galleries typically hang modern works at 1.55m to the centre line of the picture (Old Masters go a little higher) – roughly equivalent to the average human eye line. Damage-free hanging strips and hooks allow you to experiment until you get it right and thus enjoy an impressive and attractive display of art on your walls. By Kate McLelland

# WHAT IS DOT PEEN? By PCSO Andy Smith 5520

JS Woodcraft WOOD FLOORS & ACCESSORIES

VISIT OUR NEW SHOWROOM NOW OPEN SATURDAYS 9am - 3pm Open to the Trade & Public

N

orth Yorkshire Police have purchased three property marking kits that will be in use across North Yorkshire. These machines are called Dot peen and work in a similar way to an engraving or tattoo machine. A permanent mark will be made on your property, usually your house number and postcode although we can mark any other words or numbers you would like. The machine is attached to a small computer and there are a number of pre programmed settings that we will use. These change the size of the marking and the depth of the mark. This is necessary so that damage is not caused to any property and it is obvious that a delicate mobile phone will want a smaller mark than a large cycle. We will be running a number of events across North Yorkshire where the Public will have the opportunity to bring items and have them marked. These will be advertised on our twitter accounts with the #whatis dot peen and on the North Yorkshire Police website. Also on our website will be an online application form that you can fill in and local officers will then arrange to attend and mark your property. The main aim of marking all this property is to prevent crime, and to make it easier to reunite any stolen items with their rightful owner. We can mark almost any item that you will have in your household. Smooth surfaces work best and it has been checked with major suppliers that marking the property does not effect in any way any warranties. We can mark mobile phones. Laptops, tablets, TV’s, gardening equipment, riding tack and fishing rods, as well as cycles. There are very few items that you may have that we could not mark with this particular piece of equipment but if you have any questions as to whether we could mark something just contact us and we will let you know.

Etosha National Park

T

Namibia

oday, with its national parks alongside game and nature reserves, over 40% of the land is protected, a haven for the wildlife, so varied and abundant. The top viewing area is the Etosha National Park created in 1967 on a former game reserve, across the Kalahari basin up in the north-west. The name means the ‘Great White Place’, referring to a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. It’s a desert in the dry season, a land of mirages and sweeping wind, but during the summer rains it all comes alive as huge flocks of flamingos and other migrating birds return to their seasonal lagoon. Beyond the pan which covers 23% of the park, the savanna ranges from open grasslands to dwarf shrubs, thorn bush and trees, most common the acacias and the lovely Mopane whose leaves are shaped like butterflies. Wildlife thrives in all areas but some species have favourite habitats – for instance, elephants like to shelter under the trees; lions, on the other hand, find the perfect camouflage in tall golden grass, so the best way to tick names off your list is to trust the local guides. Sightings are guaranteed, they say, within three minutes of entering the park, though during the wet season, so beautifully lush and green, this may be more difficult. However, the dry season, June to October, is always rewarding, as animals wander across the arid land on their way to the waterholes. 30 | Handy Mag | February 2019

Best safari times are early or late in the day – be prepared for the cold – but what matters is not the distance covered but an attitude in tune with nature: slow down, stop and wait, look around, listen and for sure something will happen. So what might you see in such a pristine place rising like a dream out of this world? 113 species of mammals, 350 of birds, 110 of reptiles, amphibians and even fish. Once endangered species, such as elephants, lions, rhinos and the black-faced impalas that can jump 11 metres, are recovering well, but most common are zebras and gambolling springboks. Lucky visitors may spot a lonely leopard, a cheetah with her young or a speeding hyena, but the elegant giraffes and the longhorned creatures are there for all to see, be it a red hartebeest zigzagging away to escape a predator, a solitary greater kudu, an eland – the largest African antelope – or an oryx, the national animal. Then there are the little ones: the rock hyrax, the yellow mongoose, the black-backed jackal, the smallest antelope or dick-dick, and of course the birds: hornbills, plump red bishop, yellow masked weaver, lilac-breasted roller and many more. As the sun sets over the savanna, the gently floodlit waterholes are pure magic as animals approach ever so carefully, waiting patiently for their turn to drink under a starlit sky. Solange Hando

Short Story La Chouette “Mum, come in here,” Jennifer whispered, dragging Doreen into the downstairs toilet. “Have you seen what Gary’s got in his rucksack?” “No love,” Doreen replied, steadying herself on the towel rail; it was a tight space for two people and a rucksack. “I don’t go nosing through your brother’s belongings, and neither should you.” “Shhh, he could be out of the shower any minute,” Jennifer said. “I need to show you something. Have you noticed he’s been behaving a bit strangely this week?” “He has been a bit jumpy,” Doreen agreed reluctantly. “I thought it meant love was in the air.” “Me too,” Jennifer nodded. “You know how I said he should take Elaine somewhere special for Valentine’s Day?” “You wouldn’t stop going on about it!” Doreen interrupted sternly. “I had to!” Jennifer declared. “The poor thing, all he ever does is take her for walks in the countryside. What woman wouldn’t rather be wined and dined somewhere fancy?” “She’s the outdoors type,” Doreen shrugged. “Honestly Mum, is she a woman or a Labrador?” Jennifer shuddered. “They even go out in the rain.” “He seems happy,” Doreen said. “That’s what I thought,” Jennifer said. “I just had this notion that he might be planning on popping the question tonight.” “What a lovely thought!” Doreen gasped. Jennifer continued, “I had this hunch that I if looked in his rucksack I’d find an engagement ring.” Doreen grasped Jennifer’s arm. “And did you?” “No.” Jennifer opened the drawstring of Gary’s bag. “I found these. They’re night-vision binoculars, a thermos and some cheese sandwiches.” Both women looked at each other in horror. “Mum, tell me honestly, have you properly met this Elaine?” Jennifer asked. “He says she’s quite shy,” Doreen offered. “Don’t you think it’s odd that he only invites her round when we’re not here?” 32 | Handy Mag | February 2019

“I assumed he wanted some privacy.” Doreen felt flustered. “What are you trying to say, Jennifer?” “Well, what if Gary just imagines that Elaine’s his girlfriend?” Jennifer said carefully. “What if he’s just been watching her from afar with these binoculars?” “You mean like a stalker?” Doreen shook her head. “Our Gary’s not like that.” “And you know how he finally agreed to book a fancy restaurant, La Chouette, for tonight? Well I googled the restaurant,” Jennifer said. “It doesn’t exist.” Doreen went pale. “What are you two doing hiding in here?” Gary surprised them both by opening the door. He frowned. “Why have you got my bag?” Jennifer took a moment to compose herself. “How do you explain these?” She held up the binoculars. Gary’s face froze. “They’re for this evening,” he snapped, “and none of your business.” “We know La Chouette doesn’t exist,” Jennifer said. “It’s time to come clean.” Gary stared at her and then his face softened. “I said that just to get you off my case,” he said. “Elaine really isn’t interested in fancy restaurants.” “Where are you going then?” Jennifer asked suspiciously. Gary sighed, “I’m taking her barn owl spotting.” “So you’re not stalking her then?” Doreen asked. “No, Mum,” Gary laughed. “She really is my girlfriend.” “That doesn’t sound very romantic,” Jennifer pouted. Gary smiled. What Jennifer had failed to find was the diamond engagement ring he’d hidden in the lid of the thermos flask. By Jackie Brewster

Salmon with Tomato and Coriander Salsa Ready in: 30 minutes | Serves 4

This low-fat supper is quick to make and is packed with flavour. If you prefer, replace the salmon with trout or sea bass fillets.

INGREDIENTS • 4 ripe tomatoes, halved • 1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • ½ red chill, deseeded and very finely chopped (optional) • 2 tbsp lime juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 4 salmon fillets • Boiled long-grain and wild rice, to serve

1. To make the salsa, scoop out and discard the tomato seeds and dice the flesh. Place in a bowl with the red onion, coriander, chilli (if using) and 1 tbsp each of the lime juice and olive oil. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and set aside. 2. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add the remaining olive oil. Place the salmon fillets in the pan, skin-side down, and cook for 5-6 minutes. Turn each fillet over, sprinkle over the rest of the lime juice and cook for a further 5-6 minutes or until the fish flakes easily. 3. Serve the salmon fillets on a bed of boiled longgrain and wild rice and topped with the salsa. TIP: If you prefer to oven bake the salmon fillets, wrap in individual foil parcels and place on a baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 190C / fan 170C / gas mark 5 for 25 minutes. thehandymag.co.uk | 35

February at York Theatre Royal GREASE Presented by York Light

GYPSY QUEEN Writer Rob Ward Director Adam Zane York Theatre Royal Studio 13 February at 7.45pm Award-winning writer Rob Ward’s play Gypsy Queen tells a love story about two men who find each other in the most unlikely world - the world of professional boxing. The production can be seen at York Theatre Royal Studio on 13 February. George O’Connell is a bare knuckle fighter from a traveller family. A hero to his people and self-proclaimed Gypsy King, George enters the world of professional boxing, putting him on a collision course with his roots, his fears and his very identity. In the opposite corner is Dane ‘The Pain’ Samson, the young pretender and son of a boxing legend. He’s fighting his battles, leading to a tragedy that neither man can predict. With the real challenge taking place outside the ring, can two men raised to fight ever learn to love? Gypsy Queen explores LGBTQ+ visibility in sport, faith and sexuality and the notion of masculinity, played out with biting humour, heart and soul. Tickets £10 from York Theatre Royal Box Office or online

York Theatre Royal 13th - 23rd February 7.30pm, Saturday matinees at 2.30 40 years since its electric Broadway and West End debut in the 1970s created by Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey and Robert Stigwood, Grease remains one of the world’s most popular and enduring musicals. Funny, frank and featuring the hit songs Greased Lightnin’, You’re The One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted To You and Summer Nights, Grease follows the journey of Danny and Sandy, alongside the T Birds and the Pink Ladies, as they navigate high school to the unforgettable rock n’roll soundtrack that defined generations. York Light Opera Society, formed in 1953 with No, No Nanette being the first ever production. The company first performed at York Theatre Royal in 1960 with Brigadoon and has been performing there ever since. Throughout the years they have built an excellent reputation for producing shows to a high standard; and the company takes great pride in continuing its tradition of breathing new life into old favourites as well as bringing brand new musicals to York with Guys and Dolls, The King and I, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers being the most recent. The company has continued to grow and in 2013 a youth group was formed, who perform regularly at Joseph Rowntree Theatre. With over 100 productions in their 66-year history, this is the first time York Light have performed Grease. So join York Light for two weeks of leather jackets, hand jives, milkshakes and plenty of grease... Tickets from £12. Family ticket available on Price bands 1 + 2 from Box Office

CHARLIE’S COLUMN The Value of The Volunteer

O

ne of the most valuable things in my world is the priceless work of a (Ryedale Special Families) volunteer called Graham. I have known him a long time (too long in some people’s joking eyes!) and he has seen both sides of my life. People like Graham provide incredible work, work that I feel needs to be recognised and celebrated. Graham does a lot for me every month.Whether it’s a night in with a takeaway, a cinema trip, or a couple of games of pool in Malton, those sessions help me have fun away from the parents. It’s always a good laugh and can especially help if I’m in feeling down or frustrated with my illnesses. Graham is not the only person giving up their own time to help others. It was reported back in 2016 that an estimated 14.2 Million people also gave up their spare time once a month to formally volunteer across the UK. That is a massive amount. And so many lives like mine do and will continue to benefit from these wonderful, selfless people. Some of the biggest charities have a great number of volunteers. According to 2017 statistics, The Royal British Legion has 119,000, Age UK has 41,000 and Cancer Research UK is at 40,000. It’s not just charities that rely on volunteers. There are schools, parks, events, hospitals etc that wouldn’t be able to function without volunteers. In North Yorkshire, there are 5,000 volunteer organisations that benefit the county. Volunteering is an often forgotten part of society: you rarely see it on the news. And when It has been so important to me and millions of others, it’s a shame it isn’t widely reported anywhere, it’s hidden away and never really considered. If I want you to take one thing from this, my latest article, the next time your out and about, in a shop, a cafe or just walking through town, stop and look around at everyone around you: anyone could be a person doing amazing things. Anyone could be a volunteer. by Charlie Ridgewell

KITCHENS & BEDROOMS Local service, choice & value

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 28 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one 52 | Handy Mag | February 2019

kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently

beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

Finding Love and Fixing Heartbreak

V

alentine’s Day means love is in the air, and research shows we’re generally healthier, happier and live longer if we’re in a relationship. Yet break-ups can be devastating both during and after. So how can we start again and survive a split while remaining mentally healthy?

READY FOR A NEW RELATIONSHIP?

Relationships can be wonderful, but also hard work. Can you currently invest the time a relationship requires? Are you over your last relationship? Acknowledging our part in a break-up “can help us to understand what we’re good at in relationships – and what we perhaps find difficult,” advises Relate. How serious do you want your next partnership to be? What about marriage and children? Think about your ethics, attitudes and your approach to money and free time. “Usually, you tend to have more satisfying and longer lasting relationships with people who share your values,” Relate advises. Beware searching exclusively for your perfect person tough; you won’t be giving ‘candidates’ a proper chance.

HOLD ON TO YOU

Online dating can seem ideal but some members aren’t single or honest about themselves and may only be looking for sex. Also, meeting for the first time solely to evaluate romantic potential is much more intense than meeting someone normally and gradually getting to know them. Widening your social circle is a great way to increase your chances of meeting a potential partner. Try volunteering, reconnecting with old friends or colleagues, or joining an interest group to help you build confidence and meet people in less pressured circumstances. 58 | Handy Mag | February 2019

Beware rushing headlong into a new relationship, spending all your time with your new love and abandoning everything and everyone else. Investing your happiness in other people, particularly one person, isn’t healthy; it can lessen your self-esteem (and your appeal as a partner or friend)? Crucially, it can also make it far harder to cope with a break-up or bereavement.

SURVIVE A BREAK-UP

“It’s not what happens to you in life that defines you; it’s what you do about it,” says Sara Davison, author of Uncoupling. Sara’s Four Keys to Surviving and Thriving after a break-up are: 1. Taking Responsibility (for your part in what’s happened). 2. Getting Clarity (about your feelings, separation practicalities and who can support you). 3. Taking Back Control (rather than “living life in reaction”). 4. Focusing On Moving Forward Positively. Talk to people you trust and consider counselling; talking to someone neutral can be a real help. Allow yourself to feel emotions, but think about what you’re going to change in your life for next time, advises Sara. “Because there will be a next time. You just have to be ready and strong enough to embrace it.”

Why It’s Important to Groom Your Pet This Spring

G

rooming is an important part of your pet care regime throughout the year, but when spring arrives you can be sure your furry friend will want to shed their coat in the warmer weather as much as we do.

trimmed – this makes them easier to groom, and also reduces the time you have to spend vacuuming.

So what do you need to consider when grooming your pet this springtime?

Avoiding hairballs When your pet grooms itself, loose hairs are ingested and can cause a blockage in their digestive tract. Cats in particular are fastidious about grooming themselves, which makes hairballs a common issue, especially for longhaired breeds. Regular grooming with a brush helps to avoid this problem by reducing the amount of fur entering their system. By Ann Haldon

Watch out for fleas and ticks Grooming your pet regularly means you’re more likely to spot fleas or ticks that have taken up residence in their fur. Encouraged out into the environment by the warmer weather, they can be difficult to spot unless you’re close to your pet. Dealing effectively with fleas and ticks is an important consideration, however, as ticks in particular can cause serious illness.

Brush them at least once a day Longhaired cats and dogs should be brushed at least once a day at this time of year. It not only makes them feel more comfortable, but also prevents knots and tangles developing. If the weather is particularly warm it may also be worthwhile having your dog

his month my mum is trying to get me to brush my teeth every day!

I thought that chewing bones would do the job but ever since I broke a tooth on a bone that I found in the woods I have been under strict orders to only chew things that pass the fingernail test (the fingernail should leave an impression in the chew or toy when pressed into it). Every morning after my walk I come and sit in the kitchen to have my teeth brushed, mum uses breakfast to bribe me as she knows I’ll do anything for food and when I know that I’m about to have a meal I’m on my best behaviour! I only have to wait a little bit longer for breakfast and although I grumble it’s not all bad as the toothpaste tastes delicious! Once my breath smells better hopefully my mum and dad won’t turn their head away when I go to kiss them!

SHOULD I NEUTER MY DOG OR CAT? Andy Yale BVMedSci (Hons) BVM BVS (Hons) MRCVS

N

eutering male dogs will reduce their straying response to bitches in season. In terms of health, neutering will eliminate risk of testicular cancer, and dramatically reduce the risk of prostatic disease later in life. With female dogs similar benefits apply. Neutering prevents problems associated with oestrus (season or ‘heat’) which usually occurs every 6 months, where during this time bitches must be kept away from entire dogs and supervised closely. It also prevents the risk of false pregnancy which can occur after a season and may be harmful - it can be distressing for both dog and owner. Neutering eliminates the risk of pyometra, a lifethreatening womb infection that can develop later in life. It also reduces the chance of developing mammary cancer, especially if neutered before the first season. There are some arguments against routine neutering but most are not justified when explored more closely, and certainly the benefits outweigh potential risks. Neutering can predispose to weight gain, but as long as diet is appropriately managed this is rarely a problem. In bitches, urinary incontinence later in life can occasionally be associated with neutering but this is a condition that is easily treated in most cases. Neutering is often recommended between 4-6 months of age for cats, and from 6 months for dogs, although this is decided on an individual and breed basis after discussion with your vet; advice should always be sought regarding the risks and benefits in individual cases. The procedure is usually performed as a day-case and patients often make a comfortable and quick recovery. Contact your vet today to discuss the decision of neutering your pet. We are now offering laparoscopic ‘key hole’ bitch speys at our Stamford Bridge Surgery. Clients know that keyhole surgery is very common in human procedures and now this expertise has been passed onto the veterinary profession we feel that

62 | Handy Mag | December 2018

this is the way forward with regards to treating our clients’ pets. The procedure is an ovariectomy (removing just the ovaries) rather than a full ovariohysterectomy (uterus as well). This has been proven to be all that is needed and there is no increased risk of pyometra or other complications as a result of not taking out the uterus. This is historically just a tradition in the UK, but means more tissue is removed for no real reason. Key hole spey in bitches has been proven to cause a lot less post operative pain and significantly less morbidity that a traditional spey. There is a much shorter recovery time, patients are happier to move around sooner and need less pain relief post-operatively as well as the wounds are smaller - just 2 x 1cm. Recovery is quicker and patients are less likely to traumatise or lick wounds. We at Battle Flatts feel that this is a much better way of neutering your dog and will hope to provide this service at all of our clinics in the future. If you have any questions or queries about this procedure then please feel free to give one of our surgeries a ring and ask to speak to either a vet or a nurse.

Smart Motorways Explained

V

ast swathes of UK roads are being transformed into ‘Smart Motorways’. They are cited as the solution for congestion, with the hard shoulder being used as a live lane and overhead gantries displaying variable speed limits with cameras enforcing them. Highways England says the introduction of Smart Motorways has ‘increased journey reliability’ and reduced personal injury accidents. But this new network requires a new way of driving, as well as a better understanding of what the overhead signs mean.

Are there different types of Smart Motorway?

There are, and different types of Smart Motorway are dotted throughout the country. The first is a controlled motorway, which retains its hard shoulder for emergency use. The remaining lanes are subject to variable speed limits, which are displayed on overhead gantries, and enforced by speed cameras. If no speed limit is displayed, then the national speed limit is in place. Then there are all-lane-running sections of motorway, where all lanes are live, and there isn’t a hard shoulder. In the event of an incident, a red ‘X’ is displayed above the closed lane. Any driver who ignores this will receive a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence. Again, overhead speed limits are enforced by cameras. Finally, you’ve got a dynamic hard shoulder, which can be opened to live traffic during periods of congestion, with overhead gantry signs showing whether or not it can be used. It shouldn’t be used if the signs above the lane are blank or displaying a red ‘X’. Again, this is enforced by the overhead cameras. 66 | Handy Mag | February 2019

What happens if I break down on a motorway with no hard shoulder?

Look out for an emergency refuge area (ERA), denoted by blue signs with an orange SOS telephone symbol, and dotted at 1.5 mile intervals along the highway. If you’re unable to get to an ERA, you should attempt to get onto the verge (providing there is no barrier), switch on your hazard lights and exit the vehicle safely via the nearside door. If you can’t get to the nearside of the motorway safely, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt securely fastened. If you can get out of the car, contact Highways England via one of the phones placed in the ERA. However, if you can’t exit the vehicle, you need to call 999 from your mobile.

Can I get caught for speeding even if a limit isn’t displayed above the road?

Highways England states that: “All mandatory speed limits are enforced by police, as is the national speed limit of 70mph when no speeds are shown. If you break the speed limits you will be caught.” The best advice is simply not to exceed the speed limit.

Do Smart Motorways actually work?

According to Highways England, Smart Motorways are helping to keep roads moving. Published statistics say that journey reliability has improved by 22 per cent and personal injury accidents have been reduced by more than half. Highways England also says that where accidents did occur, their severity was much lower overall. By James Baggott

Books to get you talking of a stereotype or saying. The trophy wife’s partner builds her a shelf to sit on, where she can be admired by his friends and family. The woman who feels invisible to society starts to slowly disappear. There are plenty of themes to digest and discuss and a lot of enjoyment to be had in each tale.

SUNNY SIDE UP

THE SILENCE OF THE GIRLS

Susan Calman Comedian and Strictly star Susan Calman is on a mission to encourage ‘joy, kindness and community’ with her latest book. There are anecdotes from her own life and examples of random acts of kindness that have been shared by her fans. Sunny Side Up is full of warmth, positivity and (of- course) plenty of humour.

Pat Barker The Silence of the Girls is a vivid retelling of Homer’s Iliad. However, this time the focus is on the minor characters, namely the women taken as ‘spoils of war’. Queen Briseis is taken as a sex slave by Achilles when he destroys her city. Through Briseis we hear of the other female slaves in the encampment – women who are forced to serve the men that killed their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.

THIS IS GOING TO HURT

Adam Kay From 100 hour weeks to moral conundrums and emergency operations, the life of a junior doctor is far from easy. Adam Kay reveals all through six years of diary entries. Surprisingly, This is Going to Hurt is an incredibly funny book, particularly the numerous footnotes explaining hospital lingo. However, Kay also gives us an insight into the stark reality of life on the frontline of the NHS.

Books that are perfect for discussing at your book club, dissecting over dinner and chatting about on social media. A few hours later, the little girl stirs. But who is she? Part adult fairy tale, part folk tale, Once Upon a River celebrates the art of storytelling and weaves numerous stories into one rich tapestry. Thoroughly enjoyable.

CODENAME VILLANELLE

Luke Jennings If you loved the BBC’s Killing Eve, don’t miss the book it was based on. Villanelle is a cold-blooded assassin, who you just can’t help but root for. Eve is the woman tasked with stopping her. The storyline is quite different from that of the TV series and has less dark humour, but there’s still plenty of suspense to keep you reading.

BEYOND THE HOMESTEAD: VIKING WOMEN TAKE CENTRE STAGE FOR 2019 JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL

E

urope’s largest Viking Festival returns to York next February, telling the stories of Viking women beyond the homestead through the voices of seers, queens and shield maidens – a story of women whose influence was as great as any mighty warrior. JORVIK Viking Festival runs from 20 – 27 February 2019. “For the last 35 years, the themes of JORVIK Viking Festival have enabled us to tell stories that encompass many different aspects of Viking history, from myths and legends to kings and warriors, and though women have taken key roles in many of the stories, this is the first time we’ve told all of the stories

70 | Handy Mag | February 2019

The eight-day long celebration of all things Norse runs from Wednesday to Wednesday in 2019 in line with differing dates for the school half term holiday across the country. from a female perspective,” comments Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, which organises the annual event that drew over 63,000 visitors in 2018. “We have some superb source material in the sagas, which enable us to tell stories of exploration, settlement, conquest, magic and nobility from the perspective of powerful women.” Characters coming to the fore during JORVIK Viking Festival 2019 will include the seeress Thorbjorgr litilvolva, the colourfully named Sigrid the Haughty and Aud the Deep Minded, and Gunnhild Konungamodir, wife of the last Viking King in York Eric Bloodaxe, who manoeuvred her sons to positions of power in Scandinavia after Eric’s death. Their stories will be presented at Freya’s Banquet on Friday 22 February, and re-enacted by a

cast of warriors and shield maidens on the evening of Saturday 23 February at the Eye of York. Visitors will also enjoy a larger encampment this year in Parliament Street, and the main stage which hosts presentations and displays throughout the week will be in St Sampson’s Square to accommodate the growing crowds who come to watch the Best Beard and Strongest Viking Competitions on Saturday 23 February. Crowds are also expected to line the city streets on the afternoon of 23 February for the parade of hundreds of warriors from York Minster to Coppergate, home of JORVIK Viking Centre. The eight-day long celebration of all things Norse runs from Wednesday to Wednesday in 2019 in line with differing dates for the school half term holiday across the country. “Traditionally, JORVIK Viking Festival has built up towards a finale weekend based on our local half term dates, but with an audience coming from across the country, we wanted to be sure that families can enjoy the many displays and events around the city during the week as well as the busy weekend. Depending on when visitors arrive, our parade and night-time son-et-lumière spectacular can be either the perfect start to a Viking visit, or a fantastic way to end a half-term break,” comments marketing manager, Beth Dawes.

As usual, the entertaining public events will run alongside academic talks and presentations highlighting York’s pre-eminent role in the understanding of Viking culture. Guest speakers include Dr Judith Jesch, professor of Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham, who is one of the world’s top experts on women in the Viking age. Full details of all of the events in this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival will be posted online at www.jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk

Remarkable Raspberries by Pippa Greenwood

S

ucculent, tangy, sweet, flavoursome and a lot better than any you can buy in the shops! I adore home-grown raspberries and if you are going to grow soft fruit then I would recommend them above everything else for value and reliability. Despite what you may imagine they are not a difficult crop to grow, and when you consider the price of a miniature (and often rather mushy) punnet of them in the shops, they’re really good value for money too. The rather unexciting looking canes, best bought bare root, are available now, so here are my top tips for planting and growing great raspberries. Raspberries like plenty of moisture, but hate being actually soggy around the roots. If your soil is very light and sandy , improve its texture and moistureretaining ability before you plant the canes – digging in plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden

compost, well-rotted manure, composted bark and composted bracken will all help. There are two main types of raspberry you can grow at home: the summer-fruiting ones that crop heavily in midsummer and the autumn fruiters that start cropping towards the end of summer and often produce plenty of gorgeous fruits right through until the first frosts. If you can spare the space, have a few of each – that way you can enjoy the longest possible period of raspberry-eating! There are several different varieties of both summer and autumnfruiting raspberries, and if you choose a variety like ‘Fallgold’ you can even have yellow fruits. If your soil is really rather heavy and wet, and if it is alkaline or chalky, you may find that summer raspberries struggle. If this is the case, do as I do on my heavily alkaline, sticky clay soil and grow autumn fruiters, as they seem to put up with adverse conditions like this really well. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and make sure that you weed the area thoroughly before you get started,

If your soil is really rather heavy and wet, and if it is alkaline or chalky, you may find that summer raspberries struggle. as the raspberry canes will do much better without weeds competing for moisture and nutrients. If your garden is very hot and sunny in the summer then the raspberries will enjoy a little light shade from a nearby tree; otherwise, they like sunshine. Summer-fruiting raspberries need a support system – sturdy posts at a spacing of about 1.8m (6ft) and galvanized wires at a spacing of about 30cm (12in) will do the trick, as you need to loosely tie the canes in to this support system. Autumn-fruiting raspberries do not need this sort of support, but

you can tie them in if you wish, or – as the canes are inclined to flop downwards when full-sized – simply supply a few wires to keep them away from the soil. The canes are available now from mail order suppliers and from many garden centres too. They may look like a rather unimpressive bundle of sticks, but in this ‘dormant’ state they respond well to planting right now. The canes need to be spaced 4045cm (15-17in) apart, and if you want more than one row allow about 2m (6ft 6in) between them. Dig in plenty of well-rotted manure for extra soil fertility and then plant each cane at a depth of 5-8cm (2-3in), making sure that you spread the roots out well so they establish better. Once you have firmed the canes in, cut each one back to about 25cm (10in) above ground level and, if the ground is at all dry, water in well to re-settle the soil. Once the weather warms up in the spring you will start to see growth on the canes as the buds come to life, but until then they’ll remain looking worryingly like a row of seemingly dead sticks!

Summer-fruiting raspberries fruit on the previous year’s growth, so plant now for only the tiniest crop in 2019 and a far bigger one from 2020 onwards. Autumn fruiters produce their crop on the growth produced that same year, so you should get a decent crop this autumn and an even heavier one from 2020 . To keep your raspberries in top condition, mulch each spring with well-rotted manure. As soon as the summer-fruiting varieties have finished cropping, cut the canes that bore the fruit back to ground level and the newly formed canes can then be tied in to the wires ready for next year. With autumn-fruiting raspberries, just cut back the old canes at the end of winter and the new canes will appear in spring.
