elcome to the January Edition of the Handy Mag! We hope you had a good Christmas and Santa brought you all that you wished for! We’re already thinking of our New Year’s Resolutions and hopefully here at Handy Mag, we will stick to them a bit longer this year! My New Year’s Resolution is to get more exercise enjoying the fresh air and our lovely Ryedale countryside with the dogs. Maybe even try to take more time away from the computer screen – except that there is so much going on in the area with businesses and events, this is always a big challenge! As it is a big birthday year for Nicky, she says she’s going to have lots of fun this year with more time for herself – I think her young boys might have other plans for her! Faith says she’s going to cut down on her Marmite consumption – always one for a challenge!

So as we say goodbye to 2015 and hello to 2016, we’re delighted to bring you our New Year edition, packed with ideas to help kick-start your year. St Nick’s Environment Centre in York will have a busy January with its Eco-Active Day on 9th, a Hedge Laying Course on the 20th and their annual open day on the 30th. Or how about going to a Burns Night Tartan Ceilidh in aid of the Brain Tumour Charity and St Leonard’s Hospice at York Racecourse on 23rd January? We all enjoy a good sing, so why not make a note in the diary for the York Community Choir Festival at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York 28th, 29th and 30th January. November’s competition winner was Lydia Coughlin from Stockton on the Forest. Congratulations to Lydia for spotting five hidden rockets in the magazine. All that remains is to wish all our readers a very successful and healthy New Year.

Sarah Clark, Company Director and Interior Designer at Interiors at Nine to Eleven in Malton, tells us about her incredible interior design journey so far… How did you embark on your Interior Design journey? My interior design career began in some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful historic houses and stately homes, experiencing every aspect of the creative process, from the work room through to full building projects. This classical training laid the foundations for what has become our signature style.

What influences your design style? We design with Yorkshire in mind: landscapes, colours, textures and seasons which help us create timeless pieces with a contemporary twist. We design bespoke pieces to last – some of our customers have been loyal for over 30 years! As a team we immerse ourselves in new ideas and trends yet we always put ‘our stamp’ up on it. The design process is a precise yet fluid process, involving many talented people along the way. I love antiques and simple designs. Our design team mixes the classic with the contemporary, the traditional with the modern all of which present us with our unique style. We also source suppliers from around the world, providing us with inspiration for our designs from different cultures.

If someone has something in mind for their home, we listen to them, taking into account their lifestyle, age of their home and how the piece is going to be used, so each person gets their own special piece of Nine to Eleven! We’ve heard that Interiors at Nine to Eleven is a ‘destination emporium’. What does that mean? We’re very flattered to hear that! We think it means that it’s a very special place to visit. We want people to come in, relax and really enjoy their ‘Nine to Eleven’ experience here in Malton. As people discover us, they recognise our brand too and can take that home with them. And they know that all our pieces are carefully selected and are different to high street brands. Nothing is mass produced, we have something for every budget and we like to have an element of surprise in store!

If a new customer comes through the door, what can they expect? Our customers form the very heart of our business. Everyone receives a warm welcome and as much attention as they need whether it’s choosing a tasteful accessory or requesting us to design a whole room for them.

How Do You Relate to Each Other After the Festive Season? At Relate, we know Christmas can put a big strain on families. In January, we get an increase in calls from people struggling with tensions that have developed over the festive season: dealing with extended family, money worries, step children, ex-partners, intensive time together and loneliness can take their toll. There are some steps you can take during first days of New Year for a happy start to 2016: • Consider what the real issue is. Can you pin-point the problem? Is it something that occurs regularly or is it unique to the festive period? Being able to identify the problem and the root cause of it can go some way to helping solve it. • Think about everyone’s part in the problem, as it’s easy to blame someone else. • Gather together the relevant individuals involved and try to have a discussion about it. • Avoid starting the discussion when you’re angry, as you won’t be constructive. • Set a time and place (preferably a neutral location) where there

• •

won’t be any interruptions and make sure the other people know what you want to talk about so they have a chance to prepare. Try to ensure that the discussion goes well. A good way to do this is to allot each person the same length of time to explain how they feel about the situation and what they would suggest as a ‘fix’ for the future. It’s best not to interrupt when someone is talking, and listen actively. At the end of a person’s time, clarify what you heard by reflecting it back to them to see if it is accurate. Keep to the topic and don’t try to cover earlier incidents – think about what happened

specifically this year. • Use positive phrases to explain how you feel such as “I”, rather than “You made me …”, for example. • When each person has had their say, find common ground. • Can an agreement be reached during the session? If not, set another date when people have had a chance to think. If none of this works and you keep going round in circles, then it might just be worth considering talking to a professional to help with your communication. Relate counsellors are trained to work with couples and families in a wide range of situations.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS BY PETE BROADLEY

LOCAL PARENT & BRAND NEW COLUMNIST!

A

t this time of year people are thinking about making New Year’s resolutions, and after the Christmas excess it is no surprise that most relate to health and fitness. The majority of people have a lapse within the first few days and by the end of the month the resolve is all but gone. If we’re honest it was only ever a matter of time. A snap decision made just before midnight with a glass in hand is hardly the basis for sound choices. So this year I’ve resolved not to make any. My lifestyle is largely dictated by the routines of two young girls, who only have a limited understanding of the workings of the calendar, and they would be mystified by a sudden change my behaviour. We all know money can be tight in January, and it’s a long time ‘til payday, so I won’t be committing to an expensive new gym membership! In the evening, by the time the children are in bed (and hopefully asleep) and we’ve moved an assortment of toys off the floor, I often feel too tired to contemplate going out. It’s cold and dark out there, hardly the weather to be out jogging. I think it’s much more sensible to stay indoors, wrap up under a blanket and maybe put the fire on. And there’s no harm in a little snooze. It would be very easy to feel guilty. There’s a constant battle in trying to get the children to eat healthily, and the demands of trying to juggle a busy schedule doesn’t always gel with the pressure to be fit and healthy. But there’s still half a Stilton in the fridge and it would be a terrible shame for it to go waste. The same goes for the last of the Christmas crisps, nuts and those last remaining Quality Street … waste not, want not, as the saying goes; the health kick can wait till the spring!

“Whilst it is not a legal requirement to wear a cycle helmet they are relatively cheap to buy and should you ever have an accident on your cycle then a helmet will prevent you suffering a serious injury.” appropriate clothing whilst cycling. Florescent jackets make you much more visible to other road users and will help to keep you safe on the roads.

CYCLE SAFE By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

A

fter Christmas and the New Year many of us will be looking to take more exercise in an effort to lose those additional festive pounds. For a lot of us this may well involve getting a cycle out of the garage or shed and using it for the first time in a period of months. Nobody would ignore the maintenance of their car and set off on a journey without checking that it is roadworthy but many people just take the bike out and get on it without checking. It takes only a couple of minutes to check the important parts of your cycle and to make sure that they are all working. Everybody should check that the brakes are working, that the chain is oiled and undamaged and that gears are in working order at the very least. None of this is complicated and a fault in any one of these key areas could cause you serious problems when on the road. If you do not feel confident in checking these parts of your cycle then it is inexpensive to take it to a cycle shop and have them check it for you. When you have checked that your cycle is safe to ride make sure that you have lights that work. It goes without saying that you would not drive your car without lights on in the hours of darkness but there are still many people who do not have lights on their cycles. Whilst it is not a legal requirement to wear a cycle helmet they are relatively cheap to buy and should you ever have an accident on your cycle then a helmet will prevent you suffering a serious injury. It is also important to make sure that you wear 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

It is also important to remember that when cycling on the road you must adhere to the rules of the road as you would when driving a car. Traffic lights, signalling, and correct lane use (including the use of a cycle path when available) all helps to keep you safe. It makes it much easier for other road users to know what your intentions are if you signal early, clearly and use the road responsibly. Cycling in York can be a very pleasurable experience and help to keep you fit and if you remember the above points it will help to keep you safe.

TRAVEL

By Richard Jones

Majestic Mallorca

in the lovely town square and watch the townsfolk go about their daily business, before taking the very scenic 45 minute train journey back to Palma.

I

instinctively knew that tarring all of Mallorca with the same brush of notoriety for the rowdy, alcohol-fuelled behaviour of a large number of its visitors was unfair, so I flew over to uncover the island’s delights away from the package holiday resorts. I wasn’t disappointed. The 340 bus from the capital, Palma, took us to Pollença, nestling in the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. The town’s key landmark, the 365 Steps of Calvari, leads to an old convent at the top and the climb was well worth the effort for the views over the town and the terrain around. Afterwards, we cooled down with a delicious artisan ice cream from Gelats Valls in the Plaça Major. Later that evening, we were lucky to witness the spectacle of the Corpus Christi festival. After mass in the church, a masked and dancing John the Baptist leads Pollença’s youth, dancing, playing music and carrying an icon representing the body of Jesus through the narrow streets. The entire town comes out to celebrate its religious heritage and, very much, its future. The town acts as gateway to the

30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

northernmost part of Mallorca, the outstanding Formentor peninsula. You can drive the narrow roads, enjoy it on foot or, as we did, take a boat trip from Port de Pollença. The views were breathtaking and we stopped off at the little beach near the 5-star Barcelo Formentor Hotel, which once welcomed Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill as guests. The hotel’s Verandah bar, sheltered from the sun by the trees lining the beach, is a great place to relax with a gin and tonic. The beach itself is rocky: for the best swim in the area, try the beach at Cala San Vicenç, easily reached by bus from Pollença. For dinner, our choices were two neighbouring eateries in a side street: tapas at Bar Alhambra (if they have the squid cooked in ink and wine, don’t miss it), or choose a home cooked hearty meal (the portions of suckling pig and monkfish were immense) at La Font del Gall. Both restaurants serve delicious wines from the local Mortitx vineyard, about which the townsfolk will wax lyrical at any opportunity. Instead of catching the bus back south, we took a cab to the working town of Sa Pobla. Untouched by tourism, it’s an opportunity to relax with a coffee

The city is truly the island’s beating heart with something for everyone. The perceived wisdom of the travel advisors is to visit Bellver Castle and the cathedral, but choose your time of day to do so. In the midday sun, you’d be better off wandering aimlessly around the shops and bars in the narrow and cooler streets of the old town, taking care not to miss the amazing Olivar fish market (the frito mixto with a small beer at Bar de Peix inside makes for a great lunch). If art is your thing, the Esbaluard modern art museum is worth a look. For sun worshippers, at the end of the day head to the small city beach at Can Pere Antoni. It’s very convenient and popular with locals. For food, do join the locals at the excellent Quina Creu, offering small tapas known as pintxos for €1.50 each. At the other end of the scale, I have to recommend the Michelin starred Simply Fosh, where the seasonal tasting menu, including paired wines and cheeses, came to less than £100 per person. The food was outstanding, and I’m saving up for another visit when the menu changes in the autumn. Finishing off my evening with some live music in the compact and cool Jazz Voyeur club, I reflected on a great trip. I also felt some pity for those people on my flight unwittingly imprisoned down the coast in one of the rowdier resorts.

HOW DO I OBTAIN A DIVORCE? CAN I BE FORCED TO LEAVE MY HOME? WHO WILL KEEP THE MARITAL HOME? WHERE WILL THE CHILDREN LIVE? CAN I KEEP THE WHOLE OF MY PENSION? These are just a few of the questions we are frequently asked by clients who are considering or facing a breakdown in their relationship.

DIVORCE

The only ground for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of your marriage. The person who starts the divorce proceedings is known as the “Petitioner” and the other spouse is called the “Respondent”. To satisfy the court that there has been an irretrievable breakdown, the Petitioner must prove one of five facts which include adultery by your spouse, unreasonable behaviour by your spouse, desertion for a continuous period of two years immediately before the start of the divorce, separation for a period of two years immediately before the start of the divorce and your spouse consents to the divorce or the parties have lived apart for a continuous period of five years immediately before the start of the divorce. Five years separation does not require the Respondent’s consent.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

The court always has power to make orders for financial support between husband and wife unless or until a clean break order has been made. After a divorce the court can make various other orders including for payment of a lump sum, property rights and a pension sharing order. It can also make a clean break order which prevents either or both spouses from making any further financial claims against the other or against

his or her estate after death. If you cannot agree on financial arrangements you can apply to the court for a decision. Most cases are settled by agreement sometimes with the help of a Judge who can make suggestions about what is fair. Each spouse will need to make full disclosure of financial and other information In deciding what might be a fair financial settlement the Judge and Solicitors will have regard to the following legal factors: 1. The first consideration is given to the needs of your children (under 18). For this reason the possession of the former matrimonial home after a separation is often given to the spouse with whom the children live 2. The income (including earning capacity) capital assets and other financial resources of each Spouse 3. The financial needs of each spouse including outgoings and debts 4. The length of the marriage 5. Your and your spouse’s ages 6. The standard of living enjoyed during the marriage 7. The contributions made by either of you including financial contributions of income and capital and contributions of looking after the home and

bringing up a family 8. Conduct of the parties (only if it would be inequitable for the court to disregard it: conduct is rarely taken into account) 9. Loss of pension rights e.g. resulting from the divorce 10. Disability of either you or your spouse

MAKING A WILL

Divorce revokes any legacy in favour of your former spouse and re-marriage revokes any previous will unless it has been stated that Will has been made in contemplation of that remarriage. Divorce is a good time to make a Will.

INHERITANCE CLAIMS You have the right to make a claim against the estate of your deceased spouse under the Inheritance Act 1975 if your spouse has not made reasonable financial provision for you in the Will or as a result of the Intestacy Rules applying.

You have a similar right against the estate of your former spouse if you have neither remarried nor been prevented by court order from making such a claim.

Philip Chapman and Lorna Pratt at Mitchells will always be happy to answer any queries that you may have and advise and act for you in relation to Divorce or other Family Law matters. 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

With the latest government figures revealing that 67.9% of North Yorkshire’s population are now overweight or obese, Michelle says her new group has never been more important. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping so many people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get my new group open to help even more shed the misery and guilt that excess weight causes. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on experience, insight and understanding, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target.

“Like many slimmers, I tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate.”

“Like many slimmers, I tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself.

entering events and races to give me something to focus on. I have now completed Triathlons, Duathlons, 5 and 10k races and recently competed in the Great North Run for the fourth time. Next year I’m entered in a British Military Fitness obstacle race which has been organised by one of my group members, they know they only have to mention a challenge and I’m there! I certainly couldn’t or wouldn’t have done that before finding Slimming World.”

“Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle like finding ways to become more active even if you’re not very mobile or don’t like exercise. “My weight loss has completely changed my life. I was never a sporty child, to be honest I avoided PE like the plague, that has all changed! I took up running as a way of helping my weight loss and to get me more active, I started very gently at first but was soon 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“On top of that, I’ve got an amazing career. I’m doing something that I’m passionate about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost my weight without my Consultant and my group. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success was all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun in my Slimming World groups.” For more information or to join Michelle’s groups either pop along on Wednesday 6th January or call her on 07941 371921. IN FINE VOICE

YORK COMMUNITY CHOIR FESTIVAL AT JOSEPH ROWNTREE THEATRE From 28 – 30 January, the stage of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre will welcome some of the finest vocal ensembles from York and nearby when it hosts the first York Community Choir Festival.

T

he Festival came about following successful Music Nights featuring vocal groups including the Tuesday Singers.

“For many choirs, performing a full hour-long concert requires a huge amount of rehearsal time and preparation, so each of our three evening concerts will feature either three or four choirs singing some of the most popular songs in their repertoire,” comments festival organiser, David Stainton. “When we first put feelers out to the choirs of York to see if they would be interested in performing in a special choir concert, we were delighted by the number of groups who said ‘yes’ and so our Festival was born!”

The Vocal Vikings The Macmillan Cancer Care Workplace Choir The South Bank Singers FRIDAY 29 JANUARY, 7.30PM In Harmony Spirit of Harmony Cantar SATURDAY 30 JANUARY, 7.00PM The Stamford Bridge Singers Harmonix Main Street Sound York Musical Theatre Company

“We’ve got a fantastic mix of groups each with very different repertoires, from the classical South Bank Singers to the a capella sounds of In Harmony, male and female Barbershop groups, Spirit of Harmony and Main Street Sound, young voices in youth choir Tutti Amici, and classics from stage and screen with York Musical Theatre Company,” adds Joseph Rowntree Theatre’s fundraising director, Graham Mitchell. If successful, it is hoped that the York Community Choir Festival becomes an annual event in the Joseph Rowntree Theatre calendar. Proceeds from all of the concerts will go to help improve facilities of York’s Art Deco theatre, which is entirely self-funding, and run completely by a dedicated army of volunteers. Tickets cost £9 for one night, £15 for two or £18 for all three evening concerts, available online from www.jrtheatre.co.uk, emailing tickets@jrtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01904 639117. Discounts for groups are available on request.

In total, 11 choirs will perform over the three nights of the Festival, with the line-ups as follows: THURSDAY 28 JANUARY, 7.30PM Tutti Amici 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Goal Setting for Goddesses by Sue Jefferson

U

h Oh…those three words that make us shudder…New Year’s Resolutions! The one that always got me down, was my wish to lose weight. It NEVER happened. I knew the answer - eat less and exercise more - but I love food and wine and hate exercise. Am I alone in this? My doctor told me one day, “After your high powered job, you will retire to ill health!” It was my wake up call and I became motivated with the WHY I wanted to lose weight. My mission was now to become a wild and wacky 90 year old! I found an amazing personal trainer who turns up at 6.45am twice a week to put me through an hour of torture. It’s not pretty and I am glad it’s dark! In two years I’ve gone from not being able to walk 500yds without pain to running a 5k race this summer. TIPS: I became clear as to WHY, planned HOW in small steps, TOLD family and friends who encouraged me and had one person who held me ACCOUNTABLE. I made the FIRST step and celebrated my PROGRESS. If I can do it, you too can achieve anything important to you. At Damsels in Success we have an abundance of different strategies to help you succeed. BRITISH MADE, OVEN BAKED AND READY FOR YOUR FIRE THIS WINTER!

I

t is a rarity nowadays for log suppliers to sell logs that are grown and sourced within this country. Corners Warmers pride themselves on supplying logs which are predominantly sourced from Yorkshire, thereby reducing the carbon footprint and supporting the reason many people choose to burn logs to keep their houses warm.

To demonstrate its capability: If you were to put freshly felled logs (which could be as much as 70% moisture) into the kiln it would take only 3 days to dry the logs to only 15% moisture. Kiln dried logs not only burn extremely hot but they are also a ‘clean’ burn so they do not produce as much soot.

The timber is transported to the farm in Easingwold where it is seasoned for at least 12 months prior to getting sawn up. The logs are then cleaned and stored in the log barn before delivery. The resulting logs are never more than 20% moisture and produce a good heat output. Andrew Corner believes that in this day and age it is often important to the customer that the fuel they buy is sustainable and its origin is traceable.

Andrew speaks from experience when he says, “We have burnt these logs on our own woodburner and were impressed to find that we didn’t even need kindling or firelighters to start the fire. He continues, “We just placed the kiln dried logs on a bed of newspaper, ignited it and the logs commenced burning immediately”. The kiln is heated by a woodchip biomass boiler. The woodchip used in the boiler is a by-product of the wood processing. There is therefore no waste from the conversion of the felled timber, to the dry logs that are delivered to the customers’ homes. For dry, local logs for your home, call Corners Warmers on 07967 301368 or 01347 823645

Customers can also have the option of buying kiln dried logs as as a kiln was installed on the farm in 2014 (see photo). A massive 24 cubic metres of logs can be dried in the kiln at any one time.

Review of 2015 Here at the Handy Mag office, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking back at 2015, a bumper year for local events! JANUARY This month in the Handy Mag we helped promote the AGMs of many of our local groups and organisations who were planning a huge range of activities. This year also marked 10 years since the Handy Mag was first launched. and we celebrated a decade of successful publishing in York.

FEBRUARY York was host to the Europe’s largest Viking Festival, a city wide celebration. Organised by Visit York, York Residents Festival gave residents the chance to be tourists in their own city for a weekend. St Nicks Environment Centre had a busy month with an Open Day and Ceilidh.

MARCH Daffodils, early spring sunshine and saying ‘goodbye’ to winter made March a welcome month. Marianne and Nicky enjoyed a great evening at 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Ryedale towards York.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre with the Haxby-based Flying ducks Youth Theatre performing ‘The Wiz’.

APRIL Art lovers enjoyed local work of the Sheriff Hutton Art Group on Easter Sunday and Monday in the Village Hall. The Lord Mayor officially opened the Churchfield Open Space Play Area in Wigginton. The Handy Mag team were there to see this brilliant local development ‘open its doors’.

MAY This month was the ideal time for some outdoor activity including the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire. Marianne was in Norton and Malton, to see the peloton wind its way around

The Haxby and Wiggington Scarecrow Festival was held over the bank holiday weekend and Nicky went to wander round with her boys and her mum in tow. Paddington Bear drew in quite a crowd! The event raised £4,900 for charity. After the sights in Haxby & Wigginton there was still time for Nicky to visit the beautiful Flower Power Fair at Sutton Park on the way home!

New Earswick’s Nellivision (now rebranded as ‘Film at the Folk Hall’) became the newest edition to York’s cinema scene. Aroma Coffee Shop in Haxby served its 200,000th coffee since it opened in 2008 – that’s a lot of coffee!

JUNE The second annual Wiggington Community Fair & Craft Competition proved successful. And despite a rainy start, the whole village turned out at Strensall Carnival, including Nicky, accompanied by her two very wet Strensall Tigers footballers marching in the parade, followed by much hilarity while helping to man the penalty shoot-out.

JULY Summer continued to be a mixed bag of weather but it didn’t put a stop to summer events! Locally there was the annual Haxby Carnival, while scarecrows a-plenty could be seen at the Orchard Park Community Centre Scarecrow Trail. For garden lovers, Stockton on the Forest had its Festival of Gardening.

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER The school holidays seemed to go on forever, so thankfully there were lots of things happening in the York area. Dunnington Fayre and Huntington’s popular Summer Gala gathered the crowds and who can forget the 5K Bubble Rush event for St Leonard’s Hospice?

and the Handy Mag published listings so that all were able to remember the fallen at this time.

busy Strensall and Towthorpe Village Show at the beginning of September where the boys admired the many oversized onions and vegetables on display! The area’s Women’s Institutes celebrated their centenary in September, an amazing achievement for this nationwide organisation.

A Craft Fair and Santa’s Grotto helped raise funds for the Raise the Roof appeal at Haxby Memorial Hall, while Huntington Methodist Church held its annual Christmas Tree Festival.

OCTOBER

The Handy Mag team took part in ‘Supernetworking’ at the Novotel in York where we enjoyed the company of lots of other brilliant local York businesses.

There were Halloween festivals galore including the annual Pumpkin festival at Piglets Adventure Farm Park. York Maze put on their fantastic annual Hallowscream event which was a sell out and particularly enjoyed by Marianne’s teenage son and friends!

DECEMBER Christmas is a busy time of year but is also a poignant time for those who’ve lost loved ones, so Candles on the Ouse and Light up a Life events prove a peaceful time to take stock. There were dozens of church services and lots of events listed in December’s edition. Aroma Coffee Shop in Haxby had a special visit from Santa on two Saturdays and products from the local crafters group York Makers had a fair in Wigginton and Clements Hall.

Castle Howard was host to Kaboom!, who put on a Fireworks Spectacular with a James Bond theme. Nicky and the whole family went to this fabulous event equipped with wellies, torches and Halloween attire!

Big congratulations to Bishy Road for winning the Best Local Parade of Shops award in the Great British High Street of the Year Awards this month. A fantastic achievement for small local independent businesses.

NOVEMBER Nicky and her boys enjoyed the

Remembrance Day events were held throughout the region,

At the Handy Mag, we are looking forward to another exciting and full year of supporting our local communities and businesses in 2016!

When is my Tax Return due?

W

hilst most of us were tucking into our Christmas Dinner and enjoying a glass of lemonade or two, spare a thought for the 1,500 or so people who spent the festive day completing their Self-Assessment Tax Return. In fact, according to past HMRC figures, a total of around 75,000 Tax Returns are submitted over the festive period each year. For the rest of those who perhaps will be online shopping in the New Year sales, rather than online filing their Tax Return, don’t panic, there is still time to file your 2015 Tax Return before the deadline.

Do I need to do a Tax Return?

Not everyone needs to complete a Tax Return, however, if you receive income which hasn’t already had tax taken off (such as Rents, Self Employment, investment income), you are a Company Director or if you or your partner earns over £50,000 and you

The deadline for filing your 2015 Tax Return and paying any tax due is 31 January 2016. The penalties for submitting a late Tax Return can be substantial and range between £100 and £1,600. There can also be additional penalties for any tax that hasn’t been paid after the deadline.

Do I really need an Accountant?

I tend to think that a good accountant should pay for themselves in terms of tax savings and good quality advice given. So rather than putting “some numbers in some boxes” on your Tax Return, we can make sure the “right numbers go in the right boxes” by looking at ways of maximising allowances and reliefs in order to minimise your tax bill. No one wants to pay more than their fair share of tax.

Excuses, Excuses……

Finally, if you can’t submit your Tax Return on time for a genuine reason, HMRC will review the situation on a case by case basis. They have however published their Top 10 oddest excuses which include “my husband told me the deadline was 31 March…. and I believed him”, “my pet goldfish died”, and lastly a farmer in the Midlands “had a run in with a cow”. Unsurprisingly, they all ended up paying hefty penalties.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

Extremely rare skeleton and coffin go on display at JORVIK Viking Centre, York

A

n extremely rare skeletal find joins the displays at JORVIK Viking Centre this month, as one of the Swinegate skeletons, uncovered during archaeological excavations in 1990, goes on public display for the first time. The female skeleton was found as part of a larger excavation in the Swinegate area of York by York Archaeological Trust (YAT) which took place in late 1989 and early 1990. The dig explored the churchyard of the lost church of St Benet, which stood on the site from around the 8th to the early 14th century. Over 100 burials were discovered at the site, several of which date from the period of York’s Viking occupation, between AD 866 and AD 1066. The skeleton on display is thought to date from the late Viking period, possibly a woman who was alive during the reign of King Canute, who took the English throne 999

years ago in 1016. What makes the Swinegate finds unusual is that many of the timber coffins in which the bodies were buried remain largely intact. “For archaeologists studying Viking history, finding a skeleton preserved in a wooden coffin is a unique find indeed – as timber rarely survives for so long – but that is precisely what we have in this display,” comments Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust. “Once again, as we found in the Coppergate dig of the late 1970s, York’s waterlogged soil conditions preserved the timber of several coffins, including this one, so what our archaeologists unearthed represents a series of previously undisturbed burials with complete skeletons, some of which date back more than 1000 years.” The condition of the wood gives this coffin national significance,

as so few similar examples exist – particularly as this coffin would have been fairly fragile when first constructed, which tells archaeologists that it would have only been transported a short distance for burial. The coffin was made for a young woman, estimated at being aged between 26 and 35. Recent analysis of the bones reveals some of her life story– including that she had inadequate nutrition or disease as a child and degenerative joint disease in the spine and hips – but there is no indication of the cause of her death. Over the last few weeks YAT’s conservation team have undertaken a thorough examination of the coffin to determine its structure and reveal how it was constructed. “The coffin is made from oak with pegged fastenings, and you can see that during construction, the piece of timber used for the lid of the coffin split and was repaired using a baton fastened inside, with the pegs cut flush on the outer surface to make the repair less obvious,” adds Sarah. The coffin and skeleton are on display in the final gallery of the JORVIK Viking Centre, representing the late Viking period which will be a focus of new installations in 2016 as part of the Canute Millennial celebrations. The national commemorations of King Canute will start in February as part of the 32nd JORVIK Viking Festival, and indeed, those interested in hearing more about the Swinegate Skeletons can do so on Wednesday 17 February, when conservator Steve Allen and osteoarchaeologist Malin Holst share detailed findings about the skeleton in a special lecture.

JORVIK Viking Centre is open daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Admission prices are £10.25 for adults, £8.25 for concessions and £7.25 for children, with family tickets available for £30.95 (two adults and two children) or £32.95 (two adults and three children). MOTORING

Best Small Cars

By Rebecca Chaplin

If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked a couple of our favourites. FORD FIESTA Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a welllaid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification. VW POLO - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-tolast materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s wellrespected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment. HONDA JAZZ - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out. DACIA SANDERO - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.

SHORT STORY

AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE WARDROBE by Jackie Brewster

Morris stared at the contents of his wardrobe, and knew he had a problem. Not only was the man from the park six inches taller than him, he was also considerably broader. Dorothy always said he made dreadful decisions under pressure, but this time he had to get it right. Time was ticking, and before long the Sunday morning joggers would begin to arrive at the park. With every passing second the risk of detection, not to mention hypothermia, became ever greater. It was lucky for the young man that Morris had been the first to find him. Morris was walking the dog at his usual time, and as he’d passed the shelter by the lime trees a strange voice had hailed him hoarsely from the shadows within. Morris’s heart had nearly leapt from his chest. It was a classic fight or flight situation. Considering neither he, nor his basset, Broadstairs, were getting any younger, flight wasn’t really an option. To his utter relief the voice did not belong to a mugger but to a young man, who was stark naked, save for a battered Indian headdress. “I don’t suppose you could lend me a couple of quid to catch the bus home?” the man had asked politely, yet desperately. “And possibly some clothes?” It was an understandable request Morris reflected now, looking at the suits in his wardrobe. After all, there’s no point having the correct fare if the driver won’t let you get on the bus. “Do you live nearby?” the man had said. “Could we nip to your house for a coat, some trousers and shoes? I promise I’ll return them.” It turned out that the young man had been on something called a stag night, and that his friends had abandoned him an hour earlier, taking all of his clothes. Time to get some better friends, Morris thought. Morris had insisted that the young man wait there. It was too risky to have him brazenly walking through the park, and besides, Morris didn’t want a naked man in the house disturbing Dorothy. He looked over at Dorothy snoring contentedly under the eiderdown. The less she knew about this sorry business the better. If he could just find some suitable clothes then it would be a secret he and Broadstairs could take to the grave. Even in this dim light Morris could see that nothing he owned would fit. His jackets, his shoes, and 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

even his trousers would be far too small. The man would get some funny looks on the bus squeezed into those. His eyes strayed across the rail to Dorothy’s clothes. Dorothy was by anyone’s standards a large lady. In fact, Morris realised, a pair of her slacks would fit quite nicely. She also had size ten feet, a source of much frustration when shoe shopping. Morris pondered the ethics of lending the stranger his wife’s clothes. The biggest problem was how to avoid Dorothy finding out. Would the man return them promptly? He had to lend him something that Dorothy would never miss, something she rarely wore and wasn’t likely to need in the foreseeable future. Morris’s eyes alighted on the perfect choice. Delighted by his excellent decision making, he stuffed the clothes in a carrier bag and left the house without once disturbing Dorothy. He and poor Broadstairs, would, however, be enduring a deeply disturbed Dorothy two days later. There’s no easy way to explain to your wife why you’ve received a parcel containing her peach satin mother-of-the-bride outfit, her matching sling-backs, two pound coins and a battered Indian headdress in the post. FEELING THE PINCH AFTER CHRISTMAS AND MAKING SOME NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS? What about your pet – are they in tip top condition or has their weight slowly crept up or even down over the last year? It’s easy to miss gradual changes in body weight when we are with our pets every day. Here’s an easy way to tell if your dog is overweight or underweight: Use your hands to try to feel their ribs. If your dog is overweight, it will be hard to feel the bone underneath your pet’s flesh. If your dog is underweight, the ribs will feel sharp to the touch and will be distinctly visible. You may be able to see the indentation of a healthy dog’s ribs, but you should not be able to count each one. The same applies to cats, you should be able to feel their ribs with light pressure. Now, look at your pet from above, they should have a well-proportioned waste line with the waste narrower than the ribs. If your pet is overweight, consider all the food they are getting daily, dry food, canned food, tit bits from the table or treats. Have a look at the recommended feeding guide for the ideal weight of your pet (bearing in mind most feeding companies tend to over-estimate your pets requirements) and consider weighing out the food they are going to have each day. If they are getting titbits remember that what appears to us as small amounts of food can be a considerable amount of your pet’s daily calorie requirement, so consider using some of their own food instead or low calorie treats like bits of raw carrot or broccoli.

We have scales for both big and small pets so can monitor weight changes accurately. There are a variety of ‘light’ and prescription diets for weight reduction that are formulated to satisfy your pet’s appetite with a lower calorie intake. NEW BEGINNINGS In need of a change in 2016? Whether you want to alter your life’s direction, go travelling, or just be a bit healthier, sometimes you need a little inspiration before you take the plunge. This month’s selection of books features new adventures, new thinking and everyday acts of courage that might well offer just the motivation you need.

The Soup Cleanse

Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella If you’re feeling the effects of a Christmas of excess, a detox could help you get back on track. Soups are a great way to get the nutrition you need, while cutting out the ‘junk’. They’re also far more filling than juices, so won’t leave you feeling hungry, and they can be prepared ahead in batches, so work well if you don’t always have time to cook fresh food from scratch. With several detox programmes to choose from, and some truly delicious recipes, The Soup Cleanse could help you to kickstart a healthier 2016.

No Baggage

Clara Bensen A travel memoir with a difference, No Baggage sees Clara travelling through Europe with a man she’s only recently met, no luggage and no fixed plans for where to stay. She’s also only recently overcome the depression that stole two years of her life. Sleeping mainly on strangers’ sofas, the pair get to experience a different side of the countries they visit, and learn more about themselves, and each other, as they go.

One Million Lovely Letters

Jodi Ann Bickley A serious brain infection at 22 left Jodi Ann Bickley so depressed she was close to ending her own life. While re-learning to walk and do basic everyday tasks, Jodi decided to bring hope to other people’s lives by writing letters to strangers. She ended up writing thousands, and now has a team of volunteers, who handwrite letters to people who request them, all over the globe.

The Year Without a Purchase

Scott Dannemiller Tired of the relentless drive for more ‘stuff’, Scott and Gaby Dannemiller decided to take a step away from 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

consumerism and commit to a year without buying anything other than food and other essentials. This book records their experience and what they learned along the way. The couple are Christian and their religious beliefs played a big part in their decision, as did the desire to spend more meaningful time together as a family. Far from being a self-righteous lecture, it’s laugh out loud funny, and manages to make you think about your own spending habits, without a hint of nagging.

Take Your Soul to Work

Erica Brown Whether you’re a team manager, or the CEO of a multi-national business, leadership can be exhausting. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of working life, and forget about the bigger picture. Take Your Soul to Work gives you a daily meditation to help you steer your business in a more compassionate way, and inspire your employees. Read it in order, or dip in and out when you need particular guidance on an area of leadership, from mentoring to discipline.

Coal River

Ellen Marie Wiseman Sometimes small acts of courage can change communities. This historical novel tells the story of the harsh reality of coal mining in the 1900s and Emma, a young woman who decides to take a stand and speak out against child labour. While fictional, much of what Emma witnesses is based on fact, and in many parts of the world her fight is just as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. Gripping. Lola’s owner moved house and couldn’t take her with them so she is now looking for a new home to call her own. She would prefer a home with a yard or garden as she enjoys going outside and can use a catflap to come and go as she pleases. She needs an adult only, experienced home. Tallulah is looking for an experienced and understanding owner, where she will be the only pet. Due to her start in life, she can sometimes be nervous around people and takes time to trust, but once she knows you she is extremely affectionate and loving, and will make a lovely pet in the right home.

THANK YOU! This year at the York home we have successfully re-homed over 400 animals like Tallulah and Lola, and we couldn’t have done any of it without the generous support of our volunteers and supporters. So we’d just like to say a big thank you for all your help in 2015, and wish you all a happy and healthy 2016!

Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! YORK • JANUARY 2016 • ISSUE 119 somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility.

spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately. Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring. Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense
