elcome to our January edition. I think a lot of us will be glad to see the back of 2016. What a traumatic year! I don’t suppose many of the problems will be solved quickly in 2017 but we can only hope for more positivity and sensible decision-making. All we can do is focus on making our own local area and lives the best they can be. On that note, there are many local groups and organisations to get involved with - from sports clubs to bridge! If you’d like to find a new hobby or join a social group or fundraise for a local cause, have a look through this month’s edition for ideas. At the Handy Mag we had a pretty good 2016 with lots of changes, the best one being our lovely new offices. They are now looking great inside (and

smelling better – they were very fusty!), thanks to a redecoration and some pictures. I love being able to see out over the Market Place at one side and the Wolds at the other. Malton Market Place is very busy – not that we spend hours staring out of the windows but it does help us think! If you are feeling the post-Christmas blues, why not head out to the countryside and blow those cobwebs away. Or go and see one of the great local pantos to help cheer you up. There is lots to do as usual in our what’s on listings. Our local businesses will be hoping for your support in 2017 when everyone is nervous about what the future will hold. Give them a chance and shop/use local when you can. A very Happy New Year to all of our readers, advertisers, columnists and contributors. Well done to Mrs Goudy from Huntington for winning our November competition. Until next month…

“If there is nothing obvious on display a thief is very unlikely to attack your vehicle as these offences are typically very quick and any offender will have smashed your window, removed your property and made good their escape in well under a minute.” properly closed and that the doors are locked, even if you are only leaving the vehicle for a minute or two.
VEHICLE CRIME By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 In recent weeks, there has been an increase in thefts from unattended motor vehicles around the City of York. A wide range of items have been taken from vehicles, including satellite navigation systems, mobile phones and cash. Many of the vehicles have been parked outside their home addresses on the street in residential areas. These crimes are opportunistic in nature and require little or no pre-planning. Individuals have simply walked down a street looking into parked cars and when they have seen something of value they have smashed the window, leant in and grabbed whatever they can see. To avoid becoming a victim of such a crime our advice is simple. Please remember to remove any items of value from your vehicle whenever you park it anywhere, or at the very least place any items out of sight within the vehicle. We all have hectic lives however it will only take a matter of moments to remove a satellite navigation system or similar from your vehicle and keep it inside whilst your vehicle is parked unattended. If there is nothing obvious on display a thief is very unlikely to attack your vehicle as these offences are typically very quick and any offender will have smashed your window, removed your property and made good their escape in well under a minute. It is also important to consider where you park your vehicle. Whenever possible try to park your car in a garage, or if that is not possible in well lit and public areas. It goes without saying that you should always make sure that the windows on your vehicle are 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Your local Police teams can also mark any valuables that you may have with our Dot Peen machine which makes a permanent engraving of your postcode and house number. This mark will not effect the functionality of any device and will make it far more likely that should the worst happen and you are a victim of a theft that the property can be returned to you. If you would like any further advice or have any questions you can contact your local Police Team using the 101 phone number or by following the links on the North Yorkshire Police Website.

SHORT STORY
THE SCIENCE OF SNOW SHOVELLING by Jackie Brewster
Maurice laced his boots up eagerly, pleased with himself for remembering to get the snow shovel out of the shed last night. Thanks to a thick blanket of snow, this Sunday morning was the perfect opportunity to win back the favour of Mrs Harby, his comely neighbour. What woman could resist a man with a shovel? And when it came to snow and the shovelling of it, Maurice considered himself quite the expert. He opened his front door and was met with an unwelcome sight. Mrs Harby’s teenage grandson, Dale, was already pacing her drive wielding a shovel of his own. Maurice’s last encounter with Dale had ended with a line full of Mrs Harby’s sheets going up in flames. The boy was a menace, and, by the looks of things thought Maurice, his snow shovelling technique was a disgrace. Rather than methodically working down the driveway, Dale was randomly throwing snow everywhere. “Can I give you some advice young man?” Maurice called over. “You’re going about that all wrong.” “Nah, I’m alright,” Dale called back.
“I didn’t ask.” Dale kicked a pile of snow. “I’d better lend a hand.” Maurice strode purposefully across with his shovel. It was time to impress the lady by taking control of the situation. “You know what would get this done quicker?” Dale said, stumbling into a snow drift. “Chucking down some hot water.” “That’s where you’re wrong,” Maurice said. “The only way to clear this drive is with hard work. Hot water will do more harm than good.” “Yeah, right,” Dale said sarcastically, throwing down his shovel. “I’m off to get some.” Good lord, Maurice thought, don’t they teach them anything at school these days? At least with the boy gone for a few minutes he could get on with the job properly.
“How lovely,” she said. This is wonderful Maurice thought, not only will she be pleased with me for clearing her drive, she’ll be impressed by how I’m educating her grandson. “Go ahead lad,” he said indulgently. “Whenever you’re ready.”
“Out the way,” he said, “I’m going to pour this.” “Don’t,” Maurice said. “It’ll just make matters worse.”
Maurice’s face drained of all colour.
“Course it won’t,” Dale said.
“Oh mate!” Dale laughed. “You were totally right.”
Dale returned with a freshly boiled kettle.
“Just to prove it, do a patch test,” Maurice said. “Pour a small amount somewhere that your grandmother won’t tread and see what happens.”
“Yeah,” Dale said, hacking at the ground. “She’s going out for Sunday lunch.”
“Good plan,” Dale said. “But if it works we’ll pour it everywhere.”
12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
“Morning!” Maurice gave a dignified bow. “We’re conducting an experiment.”
Dale stood next to his grandmother’s car with the kettle held high, a cloud of steam coming out of the spout. Then, before Maurice could stop him, Dale poured the scalding water all over the windscreen. There was a sickening crack as the glass shattered into a thousand irreparable fragments.
“You’re just making more work,” Maurice said. “I’m sure your grandmother would like to get her car off the drive at some point.”
“Anywhere nice?” Maurice liked to keep abreast of all Mrs Harby’s comings and goings.
opened the front door, elegantly dressed for her lunch date.
If it works I’ll eat my shovel Maurice thought. “Somewhere she definitely won’t tread?” Dale said. Mrs Harby
Mrs Harby scowled and stormed back inside the house, slamming the front door behind her. Maurice’s next challenge to impress Mrs Harby was how to get a windscreen replaced on a snowy Sunday morning. And the less Dale was involved in that the better.

The YAA are proud to operate as a professional, independent charity providing a life-saving service to 5 million people across Yorkshire. We would like to reinforce to our generous supporters that we do not engage in the following practices;
DOOR KNOCKING
Official YAA staff/volunteers would never approach you at your door – this is against the YAA Fundraising policy
DOOR TO DOOR RECYCLING
Working with our recycling partners BIU Group – we have over 250 clothing banks all over Yorkshire where you can drop your unwanted textiles without any hassle. We would never push recycling bags through your door.
COLD CALLING
It is against the YAA Fundraising policy for any members of our
team to cold call our supporters. We would always advise that you check which Air Ambulance has called you should you ever receive such a phone call.
CHUGGING
Chugging is now a common term used for charity collectors who approach shoppers to sign up for donations or join a fundraising scheme. The YAA do not operate this type of fundraising.
We would always suggest that you make sure you know exactly which charity or air ambulance you are donating to. Always check for the YAA logo and official YAA literature. Make sure the person you are speaking to is wearing the YAA uniform and is carrying YAA photo ID. Our friendly teams are here to raise awareness of the work we do and work with you to support your fundraising events – we’re here to help, not hassle!
MAILSHOTTING
The YAA does not send out blanket mailings of any kind. We never send letters asking for donations, nor do we share our donor data with other organisations or use databases supplied by third parties for any of our fundraising activities.
Recognising YAA official staff and volunteers Official staff and representatives of the YAA should: • Always be carrying an official YAA ID badge • Also staff will usually be wearing branded YAA clothing. 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A FRESH START and useful resources, along with plenty of practical information. And, unlike many other books in this genre, it’s also actually enjoyable to read.
The Girl in the Garden Melanie Wallace A single teenage mum, a grieving widow, a photographer, a recluse, a man trying to do what’s right. Characters with very different outlooks and lives, but their stories are all entwined. And their flaws, hopes and buried dreams are all too identifiable. They all need to allow themselves to heal and trust if they’re to take those first tentative steps towards a better life.
The start of a new year is often the time when we take a critical look at our lives and think about making some changes. Whether you want to take up a new hobby or start your own business, this month’s books are for you… The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A Simple, Effective Way to Banish Clutter Forever Marie Kondo
If you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of ‘stuff’, this book might help. Kondo encourages us to only keep those possessions that ‘spark joy’. There is some waffle in places, but stick with it. There are some great tips and tricks. Most importantly, Kondo helps the reader to think about the emotions connected to items, and the kind of life they could have if they lived in a simpler, less cluttered space.
The Idea in You: How to Find It, Build It, and Change Your Life
Martin Amor and Alex Pellew If you’re fed up with the daily grind and thinking of starting your own business, this book could give you the kick start you need. It’s packed with advice and encouragement for turning ‘your daydream into dynamite’. There are case studies, exercises, 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The Great British Sewing Bee: From Stitch to Style Wendy Gardiner
Those looking to indulge their creative side in 2017 could find plenty to tempt them here. The companion book to the fourth series of the BBC2 show The Great British Sewing Bee, the book offers advice on everything from choosing fabric to altering designs. There are also more than 25 patterns included with the book, with projects ranging from a Babygro to a cocktail dress. Aimed at all abilities, this could well prove to be indispensable for new and experienced sewers alike.
Bloom: Navigating Life and Style –
Estée Lalonde Beauty and lifestyle vlogger Lalonde has gained a legion of fans, and much critical acclaim, for her daily musings on style, beauty, food and life in general. In Bloom, Lalonde talks about the highs and lows of her life, including overcoming depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. A beautifully designed book for dipping in and out of when you need a bit of inspiration.
Making It Up As I Go Along
Marian Keyes In this collection of essays, Keyes gives us a hilarious insight into her daily life and thoughts. While it’s laughaloud funny, there’s also a good dose of reflection. Keyes isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself and reveal her own vulnerability. By doing so, she reminds us that often we’re our own worst critics and sometimes we need to just go easy on ourselves. Celebrating
26 Years of making windows & doors
Manufactured & supplied by the local experts
Window Distribution, based on York Road Industrial Estate in Malton is celebrating 25 years in business in 2017. It is a real success story and the reasons are simple: they listen to their customers, value their staff and support their local community. Andy Dykes, manager, who has worked at Window Distribution for almost 24 years, says “When you live in a small town like Malton, where everyone knows everyone else, it pays to put the customer at the heart of your business. Every member of staff has been here a very long time and takes pride in their individual roles within the company, ensuring that the end-product is delivered to the customer of the highest standard. This is coupled with an excellence after sales service.”
As part of their commitment to their local area, Window Distribution has provided sponsorship to a number of local organisations. As well as sponsoring the Malton and Norton Lions Santa Sleigh in December, they have also helped Brooklyn Under 13s Football Team with their kit. The new season jackets sport the Window Distribution logo. Andy explains “By sponsoring Brooklyn Under 13s we not only get some great advertising for the company but put ourselves in front of potential employees of the future.”

In these uncertain economic times, it is great to hear positive news of a local business investing in staff and machinery. Window Distribution is upgrading some of its machinery in 2017 to make production easier, which means better quality and value for their customers. Why not go and have a look at their factory? Talk to Andy or Sophy and tell them exactly what you need. Their door is always open. Sophy Daniels, says “We have great relationships with our customers and they return to us again and again, not just for a chat, but for more advice and our excellent products.” The team at Window Distribution make sure they keep up to date with current trends in the industry. Astragal Bars (or ‘stick on bars’ to you and me) give the appearance
of a Georgian window, divided into multiple panes. But unlike Georgian window bars, which are integral to the window and set inside the sealed units, astragal bars are fixed to the glass on the inside and out. You can achieve the traditional, crafted look of multiple panes on a single piece of glazing. If you drop into the factory you can see for yourself.
With a fully stocked trade counter offering everything from silicone, fixing bolts, door cylinders, hinges and handles. Everything you need under one roof. The one stop shop for complete service. n January, the plants at the nursery are having a well-deserved rest, perennial plants are going dormant for the winter when they stop growing and conserve energy until better cultural conditions present themselves, but there is still a lot going on. The nursery is open on Wednesday and Friday from 10am until 3pm when the volunteers are beginning to plan and prepare for the Spring Open Days and Sales by sowing seeds, taking cuttings and potting on seedlings and bedding plants. At these times it is still possible to visit the nursery to buy plants and get them established to go into your own garden, we are happy to help and will try to answer any questions you may have. Information on Open Days and Sales for 2017 will be available soon on the website.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Paul Robson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

TRAVEL Chichen Itza
L
isted by UNESCO and the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza claims the largest Maya site on the Yucatan peninsula. From their mysterious origins around 3000 BC to the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, the Maya were never an empire but a collection of autonomous city-states with a diverse culture and people who all left their mark across the ancient sites. Great architects, mathematicians and astrologers, skilled craftsmen, the Maya enjoyed their golden age during the classic era, around AD 250900, though Chichen Itza continued to flourish into the next millennium and beyond as new settlers arrived. Named after the Itza tribe at the ‘the mouth of the well’, the stone city scatters its atmospheric remains deep in the rainforest. There’s much to see on its 15 square kilometres but the great stepped pyramid of Kukulcan casts its spell at first sight. Rising to a height of 24 metres, the

four sides represent the cardinal points, each one with a stairway of 91 steps, the number of days between equinox and solstice. Add all the steps and one more to reach the top platform and that makes 365, the solar year. But the magic doesn’t stop there. During the equinox, a strange zigzag shadow creeps down the north stairway and for the Maya, this was the ‘feathered serpent god’ slithering down from the sky. They were at ease with the duality of the world, life death, day night, earth sky, hence the feathered serpent and the carvings of birds alongside jaguars and snakes. ‘Clap your hands,’ suggest the guides and suddenly the echo turns into a spine-chilling squeak, the call of the quetzal, they say, the Maya’s sacred bird. The sound travels far and one can imagine the high priest invoking the gods from the pyramid, watched by the 20,000 strong crowd gathered below. But in the Maya world, religious rituals were not confined to the great pyramids. Chichen Itza
boasts one of the largest surviving ball courts where warriors proved their worth, throwing heavy rubber balls through stone rings, eight metres above the ground, without using their hands. The rings were shaped like serpents, the high priest watched and on occasions, the winner would be sacrificed, for only the best should be offered to the gods. The sacred well had a similar use, a 60 metre wide sacrificial sink hole said to be the ‘womb of Mother Earth’. The Maya’s written history was almost entirely destroyed by conquerors but stone friezes and carvings say it all. Among the many archaeological sites in this part of the world, Chichen Itza is unique for its similarities to Tula, the centre of the Toltec empire some 1,300 km away. The connection remains a mystery but both elements fuse beautifully, from the Temples of Warriors, Eagles, Venus and more to the striking complex of 1,000 pillars, the market where the slightest whisper can be heard across the square or the snailshaped observatory used to study the sky. By late morning, when day trippers arrive from Cancun, stall holders set up their colourful ware in the main alleyway, Mayan masks jostling with mini-pyramids, hammocks, silver bangles and toy jaguars which roar as you walk past. But on this vast enticing site, there’s always a quiet place where you can stretch out your hand and almost touch the past. There, nothing disturbs the peace but the occasional gust of wind or the distant call of jungle birds.

In my experience, the sooner a woman gets involved in the family finances, the sooner everything can be put in place to make sure the whole family is financially secure. Top Tips from a dental professional
NEW YEAR NEW YOU
I
n the New Year we make lots of resolutions and are by Christine Parker generally inclined to try BDS (GDC 72136) to improve our health and fitness, however very few of us extend that attitude to our mouths. Some very small changes can have a big impact on your oral health and your smile. If you are prone to decay think about how often you are having something to eat or drink in the day, sugar in drinks is a major cause of tooth decay, even low sugar, reduced sugar or sugar free can cause problems as they either still contain some sugar or can be acidic to drink. Every time you take a sip it will attack your teeth for about 90 minutes! If you have tea or coffee without sugar and use a sweetener instead you will reduce your waistline and your rate of decay. Another excellent easy way to reduce your decay is to brush twice a day and not to rinse after so the fluoride toothpaste continues to protect your teeth. If you are prone to gum problems it is essential to speak to your dentist so they can work out a personalised programme of treatment for you. However in the meantime at home you can invest in an electric brush, preferably with a round head and also use interdental brushes to clean the gaps between your teeth. Whilst there is no substitute for professional oral care you can certainly improve your oral health by using the above. For personalised dental advice without the jargon speak to Jan at Howardian Dental Practice, we’ll help you get a healthy mouth and then keep it that way.

Shhh! It’s a secret! by Jeff Bentley of TLC Counselling
During 2015 I badly tore the calf muscle in my left leg and at the time I had no hesitation in telling people about the discomfort and pain I was experiencing. If anyone needed convincing of how my injury was impacting my life then my limp and pained expression provided them with ample evidence. People reacted with sympathy and understanding. Not once did I experience someone dismissing my injury as unimportant or imagined. However, had I shared that I was suffering from a mental illness such as anxiety and depression then research shows that the reaction from others would have been very different. Many people, after sharing their pain of suffering from a mental illness, have experienced being told that they are ‘merely over-thinking things’ or ‘you’re just being paranoid, chill’ or ‘you have a loving family, friends and a good job so what is there to worry about?’ and ‘just pull yourself together!’. Such responses produce an understandable reluctance in us to openly admit to such suffering. We therefore keep it a closely guarded secret to avoid what can be a shaming and wounding experience. Yet evidence provided by the Mental Health Foundation tells us that one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given year. This is also echoed in a recent survey of university students by YouGov. Their survey found that one in four students admitted to suffering from mental health issues with depression and anxiety topping the list. Many of the students reported being concerned over the stigma they would have to contend with if they were to speak out. So they suffer in silence, experiencing sleepless nights alone with their thoughts. Why do they feel so ashamed of their illness? It is not their fault, but many are often made to feel guilty or melodramatic about how they are feeling. It is as if suffering from depression or anxiety had been something they chose. What needs to be understood and openly talked about is that mental illnesses are present in many people’s lives; they are very real conditions and deserve to be treated as serious. My hope and fervent wish is that through events such as World Mental Health Day and increasing coverage of mental health issues in the national media, our awareness, attitude and reactions to someone suffering from a mental illness will change so that no one has to suffer in silence and live with a lonely secret.

HOW DO I RUN A COMPANY?
A
question I often get asked when someone is thinking of setting up a company, I thought I’d write a brief summary on what’s involved in running a limited company and some of the legalities, and it’s not a scary as you think.
Company stationery The company’s full name should be displayed at the registered office and on company cheques. All company letterheads must show the registered office and business address (if this is different), along with the company number. You must put all or none of the directors’ names on letterheads.
Company accounts You have a legal duty to prepare accounts, which are presented at the annual general meeting of shareholders (which in a lot of cases will just be you!). You are responsible for producing the accounts, or for providing accurate information to an accountant so that they can be prepared. You also have to sign to confirm that they are accurate. Copies of these accounts must be submitted to Companies House and are shown on the public record. You must keep all paperwork safe. You must keep: • Bank and cash records, bank paying-in counterfoils, goods in and out records, and all company records, including personnel records, for six years.

• Annual earnings summaries for 12 years. • Registers of directors and secretaries, share documents etc permanently.
Issuing shares When you issue shares, you must comply with the Companies Act 2006 and Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and the company’s Articles of Association. We can advise on the best way of structuring your company.
Directors’ Liabilities Although directors are responsible for making sure the company complies with the law, you could become personally liable if there is fraud, or in some cases, negligence. Directors can be found individually liable if they act negligently or in breach of trust. Directors may be asked to give personal guarantees for loans, overdrafts and other debts. Think through before agreeing to these as if your guarantee is secured by a mortgage on your house, for example, you could lose your home if things go wrong. Always seek advice first.
Borrowing money from your company There are strict limits on how much directors can borrow from their company. Loans by a director to their companies are legal and quite common. Again, we can advise on how to structure a director’s loan account.

SUPERNATURE-AL BY MARY MAHON As 2017 dawns, it promises so many new things. For me, it delivers Hollywood’s highlyanticipated blockbusters! The vast spectrum of genres provides pleasure for everybody, tempting us with an escape from the real world, offering us new-fangled worlds to explore and electrifying adventures to embark on. For those that feast on fear-inducing horrors, they might be more realistic than you think… Zombies! Dominating the horror industry, the mindless creatures range from simply limping along senselessly and easy prey to slay, to sprinting savages withstanding mass mutilation. Whatever the case, we can all rest easy knowing they’re fictional. However, ‘Ophiocordyceps unilateralis’ is a fungus that brings this nightmare to life! Found in tropical rainforests, this ‘mind-controlling zombie fungus’ enslaves ants by infecting their brains and controlling them until the parasite erupts free, firing spores to infect the rest of the colony. The iconic legend ‘Frankenstein’ has influenced many films, where ‘mutants’ are spliced together by mad scientists and subsequently wreak havoc. In reality, scientists have genetically modified a range of creatures, but they’re much tamer than the films depict! ‘Frankenswine’ is an ‘enviropig’, integrating DNA from pigs, mice and E. Coli to reduce the high levels of phosphorus that normal pigs ingest. Also, we have hybrids such as glow-in-the-dark cats, rabbits and pigs as well as goats modified with spider genes to produce web silk!

Cyborgs: sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never simply ordinary. Many people benefit from artificial aids such as pacemakers implanted into the chest to help stabilise abnormal heart rhythms. Last year we witnessed the world’s first bionic eye implant, and now prosthetic arms are able to be connected to nerves so it can be controlled by the brain! These fictional fantasies are all around us without us realising. Often the wonders of our world go unnoticed. Perhaps this New year we could try to look at around us more and less at a screen.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SQUASH & SPINACH LASAGNE Serves 4. Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes
1
Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes.
2
Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency.
3 If you fancy a meat-free supper this week then try this delicious filling vegetarian lasagne. Serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread. INGREDIENTS: • 1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 tsp dried oregano • 3 tbsp olive oil • 200g baby spinach leaves • 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets • 250g ricotta cheese • 300g cottage cheese • 150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese • 25g pine nuts • Green salad, to serve
Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese.
4
Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary.
5
Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. Serve with green salad.
TIP Instead of the spinach you could use lightly fried slices of courgette or sliced beefsteak tomatoes. 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

By James Baggott
Ferrari California T Handling Speciale VALUE FOR MONEY The California T Handling Speciale costs £155,244 – pitching it against the Audi R8 Spyder and Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. But options increase that base price; our test car had 29 added extras totalling £59,767, pushing the price up to a staggering £215,011.
Meet the California T HS – the tweaked version of the manufacturer’s folding hard-top family Ferrari. With two seats in the back for small children and a V8 turbo-charged engine, this is the convertible Italian supercar for those with more than one significant other. New for the Handling Speciale model are some stiffer springs, louder exhaust and some ever-so-subtle design tweaks – for which you’ll be charged £5,568 to add to an ever-expanding list of options. LOOKS AND IMAGE The California is aimed at a certain type of buyer - this is a GT car designed for comfort, looks and kerb appeal above driving entertainment, unlike its thoroughbred 488 stablemate. Even with the louder exhaust system on this HS model, on the road we found it just a little too quiet. In fact, we found the California lacked a lot of the excitement you’d expect to find in a Ferrari, though it was certainly comfortable over distance. The quality of its build is without question too – perfectly demonstrated with a wonderfully dramatic roof mechanism. 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
SPACE AND PRACTICALITY This is a sports car with sports car compromises – with the front seats back there is very little or no rear legroom and the boot is cramped too. If you don’t want to use the roof, you get a little more space, but if you do then you’ll be restricted to two small bags. BEHIND THE WHEEL For long distance motorway journeys, the California T HS is a comfortable companion. The 552bhp turbo-charged V8 has impressive breadth to its power delivery and can hit 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. Sadly, although the turbo engine offers improved performance, it lacks some of the aural pleasure you expect from a Ferrari. Those stiffer springs and louder exhaust come into play when you select the ‘Sport’ setting, and hit the bumpy road button on the steering wheel too and you’ll be rewarded with a compliant ride that’s just about perfect for rutted roads. A parking camera makes reversing straightforward and the visibility isn’t too bad either.
One well worth adding, though, is Apple CarPlay (£2,400) which makes the infotainment system far more usable. Ferrari’s standard system isn’t a match for the likes of Audi or Porsche, so the addition of Apple’s integrated software is well worth selecting. Who would buy one? California buyers are family men or women who need the occasional flexibility of carrying more than one passenger. It might mean compromising on space for everyone, but at least the option is there. VERDICT It’s hard not to be a little disappointed by the California, though what that’s down to is difficult to pinpoint. The turbocharged engine isn’t as evocative as it could be and it’s not as emotive to drive either – more functional long-distance GT than out and out sports car. However, for families that need flexible space, want convertible style but with the added refinement of a folding hard top, and for whom anything less than a Ferrari badge simply won’t do, the California will hit the spot and, the Handling Speciale pack does look like a bargain when compared to the other options on the list.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE
FIGHTING THE FROSTS by Pippa Greenwood The frosts are here, and in the weeks ahead the worst of the winter is likely to arrive too. Added to that there is often a fair bit of rain or even snow at this time of year, so our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Now most of the plants you grow in your garden are probably fairly frost-resistant, but what can you do to ensure that damage to those which are not so hardy is kept to a minimum? Some deterioration may already have occurred, but it is the last frosts and those which hit the plants in spring that are likely to be most damaging, as they catch plants out when they have already put on a bit of new
growth. So, there’s definitely a very good reason to brace yourself, get out into the garden and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting as their roots are not protected beneath the soil, but are relatively exposed with just the container and a bit of compost to cover them. Thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat, especially those made of metal. Thicker wood or ceramic pots provide a little extra insulation, but even these may need a bit more. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock. then wrap it up well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains – it may not look pretty but it’ll do the job. If the container is in a very prominent position and you want it to look more appealing, buy some hessian and use lengths of this to create an outermost layer to hide the insulation material – it can actually end up looking rather nice! If very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have promoted some soft, new growth that will be particularly frost prone, drape a double layer of
horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. If you want to make life a lot easier then invest in some Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and each one has a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it. You can find out more on my website www. pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect-your-crops. A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Larger individual plants in borders, which
are too big for even the large fleece jackets, can be given longer term protection with a home-made protective ‘cage’. Just use four stakes or sturdy canes to create a framework which you wrap with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth – during the cold weather they continue to need a fair amount of water and if this is frozen solid in the soil, they soon suffer. So it is essential to continue to water these, especially if they are in a spot where they are sheltered from a lot of the rain which does fall, or if the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground becomes frosted will help too. Once frozen, soil moisture

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE becomes unavailable, so this mulch will help to keep the water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly-opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful as by then the buds are further developed. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy them from a specialist nursery and try to get late-flowering varieties where possible, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, don’t forget to use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored fleece or a fleececovered pull-out EasyTunnel is
quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and any seedlings brave (or foolhardy) enough to poke their heads above ground before the cold weather is over! If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds

A Cheerless Day In January By The Pastoral Poet Late the blind of night was raised. Light averse to hailing the dawn. Translucent panes are over glazed: Blurred by the dank and drizzly morn. Oozing over far eastern hills, Sparingly, the thin light spills, Harried by the hounds of gloom. High above, a sobbing cloud weeps, Falling tears rinse the weathered leaves. A watery sun merely peeps, Uncaring as the sad day grieves. Lucid thoughts are somewhat hidden, Lost within the foetid midden Of mediocrity. Absent, the bugle’s rousing piece. Frostbitten, the withered flower. The all too punctual timepiece, Seems reluctant to meet the hour. The blindfolded sun, on this day, Is beamless on the savage way, Where crows pick the broken road kill. Clive Milson

STATION HOUSE VETS A CAT FRIENDLY CLINIC Station House Vets are delighted to announce that we are now an accredited ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic, achieving the silver award. So what is a Cat friendly Clinic? The International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) is the veterinary division of International Cat Care (www.icatcare.org), it’s a charity that is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of cat’s worldwide. The organisation recognises that because of their unique nature and needs, taking a cat to a veterinary clinic can be very stressful, both for the cat and also the owner. The Cat Friendly Clinic programme is designed to help address these issues and create more cat friendly veterinary clinics, so reducing the stress for the cat, and making veterinary visits easier for cat owners as well. The ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic Scheme means accredited clinics have reached higher standards of cat care in that they: • Understand the needs of cats and have make visits to the vets more cat-friendly • Understand how to approach and handle cats gently and with care • Have good knowledge and equipment to manage the care of cats The Cat Friendly clinic accreditation is at three levels- Bronze, Silver and Gold. These recognise that vet clinics can vary widely in the size, location, structure, staffing and equipment. Achieving the silver standard has involved all staff, from receptionists, nurses through to vets. We have two ‘Cat Advocate’s’ who ensure that the cat friendly standards are maintained, and are happy to talk to you about any questions you may have. So what does it mean for you cat and you? An ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic gives you peace of mind and reassurance, knowing that: • Our clinic has achieved a sliver accreditation standard • Our clinic staff have thought about the specific needs of cats and act on accordingly. • We will be happy to talk with you, show you around the clinic and discuss any concerns you may have.
Staff at Station house vets handle cats and treat cats with understanding, gentleness and respect, and make every effort to make the visit to the clinic as stress-free for you and your cat as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about bringing your cat to us, or even about the Cat Friendly Clinic please don’t hesitate to email us on: nurses@stationhousevets.co.uk or likewise you can visit the Cat Friendly Clinic website which contains all the information about the ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic: www. catfriendlyclinic.org Ellie Kift (Student Veterinary Nurse) Station House Vets

Clayton is a very sweet natured cat who would make a great family pet. He is the first to greet you on a morning when we arrive for work. Clayton will need to be a complete house cat and be the only cat. He will be suitable to live with junior school age children and over, he really is a lovely lad who deserves to be part of a loving new home. Nigel came to us after finding himself on the streets fending for himself; life has been tough for this gorgeous lad which has left him rather afraid of people. He really does want to be friends and just needs a nice quiet home where he can settle and learn what a loving home is. We would love for Nigel to find an adult only home to help him grow in confidence and offer him the love and stability he deserves.
THANK YOU!
We’ve been able to find loving homes for hundreds of animals this year, and none of this would have been possible without the dedicated support of all of our supporters and volunteers - so we’d just like to say a big thank you, and wish you all a happy and successful 2017! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 73
