elcome to our July edition.

After 2½ years working from our little shop on Market Street in Malton, we are both happy and sad to be moving to bigger offices above The Deli of Malton and Smash Boutique with views over Malton Market Place. We will have much more storage space and have room to chat with people when they drop in and see us. But we will miss the up and coming community on Market Street – no more waving to Butter Bees over the road or shouting out to Computer FX next door for IT support! Come and visit us later in July when we’re all settled in at 18F Market Place – or at least give us a wave if you’re passing! It really is summer this month and with the school holidays just weeks away, children all over are on a countdown to summer freedom. No fear, there

is lots to do locally in July. From music festivals to carnivals, village fetes and sporting challenges have a look through our event listings for something brilliant to keep them entertained. Our next edition covers both August and September. The deadline will be Tuesday 12th July. With relentless monthly deadlines it is a challenge for Nicky, Phil and myself to take a break at any other time of the year. This year I will be heading off to Wales with family and dogs in tow for some sun. Yes I know Wales doesn’t have a great reputation weather-wise but at least it’ll be a break from the computer! Whatever you’re up to this summer, remember to keep your Handy Mag with you. It’s perfect for reading with a coffee in the garden or, if the weather is our usual British variety, curled up indoors! Well done to Sarah Hurst from York for winning our May competition.

MARINATED PEPPER PLATTER Serves 6 as starter or part of buffet. Ready in 1 hour, plus marinating

1

Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skin-side up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7-8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can.

2 3

Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly chop the sun-dried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Serve garnished with the shredded basil leaves.

A really summery platter of grilled peppers with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella pearls. Make a day in advance and chill in the fridge until required. Serve with crusty bread for a simple starter or as part of a summer buffet.

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?

T

he Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the school summer holidays, where thousands of families take part in the biggest reading event for children in libraries across the UK.

Friendly Read’ which honours the Worlds Number 1 storyteller, Roald Dahl. After reading each book, the children can go to their Library, talk about what they have read and get a prize. When they have read their six books they will receive a certificate to say they have completed the challenge.

The aim of the challenge, which is run by the charity The Reading Agency, is to get children to sign up at their local library, then read six books of their choice over the summer to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive fun prizes and collectors cards to collect along the way, and it’s FREE to take part!

Children are invited to read anything that they like and can even read books from home, including ebooks or audiobooks as long as they tell the Library about the stories they’ve discovered. The challenge starts on the 16th of July and is open to children aged 5-12 years. There is also a

SUMMER SAFETY By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 At long last we are starting to see warmer weather and a huge number of us will join friends for a drink to enjoy the sun, and very often we can drink rather more than we originally intended to. York is famous for its Riverside locations, which are a very popular place to meet. There have been a number of very well publicised tragedies in York over recent years where people have lost their lives in one of our Rivers. All too often alcohol is a contributing factor to these events. If you are going to enjoy a drink by the River, or plan to walk home alongside the River afterwards, it is vital that you remain sensible and consider your own safety, and that of your friends and family. The river bank is for the most part not fenced off and the paths do run very close to the edge of the water in many places. Lighting along the river is not always good and it is very possible for you to slip and fall in. If you can plan your route home either avoiding the River or walk with friends so that you can look after each others safety. You should also be aware that there are individuals who will take advantage of you if you are under the influence of alcohol. You are far more vulnerable after a few drinks and whilst it is thankfully an uncommon occurrence, there have been cases where individuals have been attacked after a night out and had their valuables stolen. Minimise your risks by walking home with a friend and sticking to well lit routes in public areas. If you do find that you have to go home alone there are a number of bus services in York that are inexpensive and safer than walking alone. There are also taxi’s available which will get you home safely. PHOBIAS BY MARY MAHON

As people living in 2016, we are lucky enough to experience new things that decades ago would have been pure fantasy, yet with this modernised society there’s an increasing abundance of phobias derived from our new inventions and wider world understanding – to the point where even phobophobia, the fear of fear itself, is an official term! Logically, as society expands with opportunities there’s more to be afraid of, such as the fear of heights. In its simplest form, a fear of heights is listed as acrophobia. Centuries ago, a fear of heights may have occurred by being at the top of a cliff, or climbing a great tree, however our expanded capabilities have afforded us to build vast skyscrapers and travel through the skies in winged metal tanks, and so it is no surprise that we have developed specific phobias. Air travel itself is ‘aerophobia’, bridges are categorised under ‘gephyrophobia’ and a fear of high buildings is ‘batophobia’. Now, whilst there are many easily explainable fears that have been begotten out of our modern society, there are many phobias that appear slightly odd… Some phobias are specific to groups of people, such as Americophobia (all things American), Sinophobia (Chinese) and Anglophobia (British); for almost every country, there is a phobia that goes hand-in-hand with it. Similarly, there are fears that are specific to certain types of feelings and senses, such as getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth (arachibutyrophobia), the taste of sourness (acerophobia) and most bizarre of all, anatidaephobia, the sense that you are being watched by a duck. Even various body parts have also been recorded to inspire fear, as bellybuttons (omphalophobia), chins (geniophobia), knees (genuphobia) and even beards (pogonophobia) can cause panic attacks in some individuals. Yet perhaps most odd and ironic of all is the trending term for the fear of long words – hippopotomonstroesquipedaliophobia.

Arguably, most relevant to our generation is nomophobia, the genuine fear of being out of mobile phone contact. However, as seemingly trivial some fears may be, they are very serious matters. Often, they can control elements of people’s lives and stop them from experiencing certain things, therefore it is important to try and overcome them. Life is so incredibly short, so don’t succumb to chronophobia – the fear of wasting your time.

YOUR PERSONAL MARATHON SATURDAY 9TH JULY. STARTING BETWEEN 11.30AM AND 12PM

I

t is half a mile between St Mary’s Church in Haxby and St Nicholas’ Church in Wigginton. A short stroll for some but for many in our community it is a marathon. Inspired by two year old Blake Knaggs, a group of women from both churches are organising a walk from St Mary’s to St Nicholas to raise funds for the charity Blake’s Genes. Blake has a very rare lifelimiting genetic condition called Mucolipidosis II (Ml2). The group created in his name has had great success in raising funds for research and promoting

awareness of this condition. The walk will take place on Saturday 9th July from 11.30am to 12 noon at St Mary’s and participants can walk, toddle, hop, skip, go three legged with a partner or dress up – whatever will make it a personal marathon for them. Sponsorship forms are available from both Churches, the Co-op in Haxby or contact Lindsey on 01904 762929 or email steejoh47@aol.coml or visit the Facebook page Wigginton Community Fair 2016. You don’t have to raise sponsorship, you could help by making a

donation, buy a drink or cake or just join the walk to show support for everyone, like Blake, who has mobility problems. There will be refreshments available, thanks to the Co-op in Haxby, at St Nicholas’ Church at the finish along with children’s activities and story time.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL THERE TO SUPPORT BLAKE’S GENES

Bringing art to the heart of the city

Bringing art Sunday into theof heart the city on the last eachofmonth onartists the last Local HattiSunday in the month McKenzie and Sue Clayton are on a mission to bring life back to the refurbished Little Shambles Market with Little www.littleshamblesbigart .co.uk Shambles Big Art on the last Sunday of each month.

Sunday 25th September The Knavesmire, York

Launched on Easter Sunday, ‘Little Shambles Big Art’ is a family-friendly event bringing local professional artists in to York alongside live free art demonstrations and children’s art activities. Sue says “Each event will have live demonstrations with guest artists encouraging all to have a go. Activities are open to all, aged 0 to 90! Come and join in with the art-themed activities every month.” In May, children made Stallwarts (like gargoyles) which will be displayed around the market stalls and Hatti invited visitors to walk across a large slab of clay as a record of the footfall in the market and which will be made into tiles, fired and create a striking installation in the market. Local professional artists are on hand exhibiting and selling their work in all mediums including painting, textiles, ceramics, papercut and glass. There are budgets to suit all, from cards and prints to bespoke pieces. Live music and food from neighbouring street food area make Little Shambles Big Art a great place to visit with your family on 31st July. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RAGWORT POISONING

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic Ragwort poisoning is one of the most common causes of liver disease in horses and ponies in the UK. Ragwort is a tall plant with yellow flowers. Its scientific name is Senecio jacobea and it contains a poison (toxin) which is also found in some other plants, such as Lantana and some Heliotropes. The poison is found in variable concentrations in different parts of the plant and at different stages of its growth. The plants are not palatable and horses will not usually eat them unless pasture is heavily contaminated or there is little other food available. However, the poison is very stable and remains toxic even when the dried plant is incorporated into hay. The most common cause of ragwort poisoning is therefore from chronic (long-term) eating of hay which includes dried ragwort.

Signs of ragwort poisoning

Unless very large quantities of fresh plants are eaten, which is very uncommon in UK, the symptoms of poisoning are usually not seen until 4 weeks to 6 months after eating the plants. Small doses of the poison gradually accumulate in the horse’s liver where it causes damage to the liver cells and subsequent scarring, eventually causing the liver to shrink in size. Symptoms of liver disease only develop when the organ is no longer able to compensate for the loss of functional tissue. Symptoms usually develop quite suddenly, although in some horses and ponies slight illness can precede more severe symptoms. Early signs include loss of appetite, depression, diarrhoea, weight loss and mild jaundice. More severe symptoms include marked jaundice and collapse or abnormal behaviour, which can range from profound depression to compulsive walking and pressing the head against objects, e.g. walls, apparent blindness, photosensitization (excessive sensitivity to sunlight) and convulsions. These behavioural abnormalities are caused by toxic effects on the horse’s brain (hepatic encephalopathy). Most severely affected cases with behavioural abnormalities die within approximately 10 days.

of ingestion of ragwort is often unclear due to the time lag between ingestion and the development of clinical signs. Laboratory tests, including the measurement of liver enzymes, bile acids and bilirubin levels in the horse’s blood, confirm a diagnosis of liver disease and assess the liver’s ability to function. To confirm the diagnosis of ragwort poisoning, a liver biopsy is required to demonstrate the typical microscopic abnormalities (pathology). If these are not found, the biopsy may help to suggest other possible causes of liver damage. Follow-up liver biopsies help to monitor progression of the condition in horses receiving treatment for ragwort poisoning.

Preventing ragwort poisoning

Any ragwort plants that are found should be pulled up by their roots and disposed of away from livestock. Do not leave cut or pulled plants in the paddock or they may be eaten when they have dried and are more palatable. Plants on adjacent land should be removed to avoid the spreading of seed back into your paddocks. Always ensure that there is adequate grazing or alternative food sources such as hay, so that your horse or pony is not tempted to eat any ragwort which may have been missed.

CAT HEALTH

The population of cats in the UK is at a record high. Some of these cats are much loved family pets, but many are from unplanned litters and become stray or feral cats, who can carry disease and have a damaging effect on the populations for wild birds and rodents. Un-spayed female cats can produce up to 18 kittens a year and there are simply not enough homes for them all. Unless you actively want your cat to have kittens we strongly recommend you have your male and female cats neutered from 4 months old. As well as preventing unwanted litters, there are many health benefits to early neutering of cats including fewer health problems and a longer life expectancy. Spaying your female cat before their first season can greatly reduce the risk of mammary cancer and prevent a life threatening uterus infection, called a pyometra. Infections can also be transmitted between cats through mating or passed from infected mothers to their offspring. There are behavioural benefits too that benefit both you and your cat. An un-neutered male cat tends to mark his territory by spraying urine; neutering can reduce his need to do this and also his inclination to roam so far from home. Un-neutered male cats also have a higher tendency to fight with other cats. Unneutered female cats are often restless and vocalise loudly by yowling during their seasons and they are very attractive to amorous tom cats. All in all, a neutered cat tends to be a happier and more contented cat. If you would like to discuss having your cat neutered or need more information please don’t hesitate to call us. We hope to see you and your cat soon! Michelle Grahame and Eleanor Kift Veterinary nursing colleagues at Station House Vets Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 12th July

SORRY!

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Talking of Sorry (did you see what I did there?) I was heartened to learn that Ronnie Corbett does appear to have been thinking ahead. He sold their beloved family home of 33 years for £1.27 million in 2003. They moved to a modest £250,000 house and dished out the rest to their daughters, Emma and Sophie. And as this was more than 7 years ago, they undoubtedly saved the family a 6 figure tax liability.

I

s it me, or have we had more than our fair share of celebrity deaths recently? I was struck by two very different approaches to Inheritance Tax by two of our ‘national treasures’. Cilla Black appears to have done no planning at all, and left her family a £6 million tax headache. That’s a lorra lorra tax. And it means the tax man will get twice as much as her three sons. Ouch. (Incidentally, I got into a spat over this very subject when more than one commentator accused me of scaremongering. Cilla Black’s lawyers will make sure they don’t pay the tax, they said. Well, unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. You can’t do anything about it when you’re dead. Sorry.

Ronnie’s wife, Anne Hart, is known to have been rattled by the unfairness of death duties. She had a pop at the then Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls at the 2013 Pride of Britain Awards, saying, “We have already paid hundreds of thousands in tax. We should be able to leave what’s left to our girls.” Interesting comments coming out of our posts on social media around this subject. A surprisingly high number of people are saying that Inheritance Tax is fair because it stops people amassing vast fortunes. I’m guessing these people have no money. And very little prospect of getting any. Because they don’t appear to grasp that amassing vast fortunes rarely happens by magic, but is generally preceded by vast amounts of work.

GET MY NEW INHERITANCE TAX COURSE NOW

If you’d rather your family got the fruits of your labour rather than our crazy Government, why not get my new online Inheritance Tax Course ‘How to save Inheritance Tax without giving everything away’? Just go to www.julie. direct/ihtonlinecourse - use the special Handy Mag Code HMIHT and you’ll get it for £29 rather than the usual £99. & Afternoon Tea At The Old Surgery, 18 The Village, Strensall

From 1st July 2016 Stockton on the Forest Village Hall has a new booking secretary. For all enquiries please now contact Trish Lewis on 01904 400155. Many thanks to Vicky Gilbert for all her hard work over the past eight years. We wish her well.

Cheeks came to us as a battered old street cat, he is now looking for that loving home where he can start to enjoy life as a family pet. Life on the streets has left Cheeks a little unsure but he is desperate to be friends. Once he realises you are not going to hurt him he does love a fuss. He would be best suited to an adult only home with no other pets. Archie really has had a tough life up to now, he came to us as an unclaimed stray who had not been shown much love and attention. Archie is a little shy of meeting new people so would need time to settle in and feel safe. Once he realises you are not going to hurt him he is up for a head rub and tickle under the chin.

Ryedale Rose Festival 9th & 10th July at RV Roger’s Nursery, Pickering

T

he Ryedale Rose Festival is a major event on the rose exhibitors’ calendar, and is well established at the RV Roger nurseries, where more than 600 varieties of roses are grown. The festival came to the nurseries 4 years ago, and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with last year’s festival bringing in around 1200 visitors over the weekend. The Ryedale Rose Festival will showcase the achievements of some of the UK’s top rose exhibitors, as well as being a free rose-filled weekend for the whole family with live music, refreshments, talks, displays, and demonstrations. RV Roger Ltd is one of the UK’s top rose growers, and hosts this prestigious annual event, incorporating the British Isles Rose Society’s flagship annual show and awards ceremony. According to The Horticultural Trades Association, half of all garden owners grow roses somewhere in their garden, and new ones are being developed all the time. Previous Ryedale Rose Festivals have seen the introduction of new roses supporting charities such as the Calendar Girls, the Paralympian gold medal winner Hannah Lucy Cockcroft’s chosen charity, and Tommy’s Rose raising funds for the Western Front Association in this anniversary year!

Some of the highlights of the 2016 show... • British Isles Rose Society annual awards • New roses from the country’s top breeders • Amateur Rose Breeders association new varieties. • Local Ryedale schools class depicting a scene from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ • Two marquees displaying over 1000 roses • Rose pruning and budding demonstrations, plus the chance to try your own! • Seek advice from professionals about your own roses and gardens • Refreshments from ‘Fish ’n’ Chips’, the ‘Coffee Stop’ and Bradley’s Ice Cream. • The RV Roger rose fields open with more than 50,000 roses in bloom • Artists and craftsmen demonstrations, including Royal Horticultural Society’s Gold medal winning botanical artist Bridget Gillespie and sculptural Blacksmith David Stephenson • Top range of DeWit garden tools on sale at show special discounts • Talks from garden designer Stephen Bean • Kirkbymoorside Photographic Society display • Live musical entertainment throughout the day

Open to everyone, the free event will be a blaze of colour and scent, and is a rare opportunity to see displays by some of the premier rose growers in the UK. Visitors will be able to admire the huge range and diversity of our nation’s favourite flower, whilst having the unique opportunity to stroll amongst RV Roger’s rose fields and enjoy the heady experience of 50,000 rose bushes in full bloom.

FIRST DRIVE

By James Baggott

Range Rover Evoque Convertible What’s the spec like?

A 10.2inch touchscreen allows the driver to navigate using easy pinch and swipe motions even whilst driving. However, it can prove difficult to read when the roof is down. Safety is accounted for by hidden aluminium roll over bars, which automatically deploy in the event of an accident. The convertible is not just a summer fancy. Boasting a 251litre boot, 500mm water wade ability, all terrain progress control and a ski hatch, it is a comfortable and relatively practical drive. Four years after its concept debut, Range Rover’s Evoque convertible has come to fruition. Its hard top sibling has already sold more than half a million units since it was launched in 2011 and over 1,500 orders have so far been placed for the convertible variant. What is it? The Evoque convertible is the world’s first convertible compact SUV. Based on the same platform as the Evoque, and featuring much of the same spec, the convertible looks luxurious. The car’s chassis has received strengthening in order to maintain the car’s torsional rigidity, despite its lack of roof.

What’s under the bonnet?

A 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium diesel engine powers the 4x4, putting out 180PS and 430Nm of torque through the Efficient Driveline four-wheeldrive system. This system varies the flow of torque between the front and rear wheels in different driving conditions. Fuel economy is a modest 49.6mpg while the diesel emits 149g of C02 per kilometre, making it theoretically one of the most fuel efficient Range Rovers available. The 9-speed automatic gearbox is from the standard Evoque. The added weight of the chassis – 1,967kg compared to the coupe’s 1,690kg – is noticeable when accelerating out of corners, though switching into its semi-automatic function and making use of the steering wheel mounted paddles proves slightly more responsive. 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The roof can operate at speeds of up to 30mph and, unlike some other convertibles, neither rear visibility nor boot capacity is compromised when the roof is folded down.

Any rivals?

Like for like, the Evoque convertible has no rivals. It is likely to draw a customer base from fans of luxury D-segment convertibles, and drivers of the original Evoque are also expected to be tempted.

What’s it like to drive?

The 9-speed gearbox feels too sluggish for the convertible, due to the weight of the strengthened chassis. However, in its position as the new it-car for fashionistas, it is unlikely that the convertible will be tackling much more than the occasional country road. Acceleration to 60mph takes 9.7seconds while the vehicle tops out at 121mph and steering is reassuringly firm at both high and low speeds. Wind noise is reduced in convertible form thanks to clever aerodynamics and an optional wind deflector, meaning that noise and buffeting in the front of the cabin is limited, and audible conversations can be held even at motorway speeds.

Verdict

As 4x4s go, the Evoque convertible wouldn’t be the obvious choice. Practicality is seriously limited, and realistically the model would only provide a comfortable long distance journey for two. But drivers wanting the benefits of both a 4x4 and a soft top can’t go wrong. Perhaps the model could do with some refinement, but for the first of its kind it will certainly set a precedent. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 12th July

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

Heritage in Palermo

justly renowned for its acoustics, and the place where the final scenes of the Godfather Part III were filmed in 1990.

L

apped by the blue Tyrrhenian Sea, framed by mountains rising over 1,000 metres, Palermo is the bustling capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Attracted by the natural harbour and strategic location, myriad civilisations landed on these shores and on its solitary headland, the iconic Mount Pellegrino has seen them all: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish to name just a few, all leaving their mark on a city which became one of the richest on the Mediterranean. Today Palermo remains an enticing mix of old and new, tree-lined avenues festooned in hibiscus and oleander, traditional street markets, hidden courtyards and breezy squares and narrow twisting lanes where laundry flaps on the balconies. The air smells of oranges and lemons and freshlybaked pizza, church bells mingle with the hooting of scooters and tuk-tuks and pony and traps rattle side by side. Bursting with colour, Palermo

58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

is above all a city of palaces, theatres and churches, contributing to Sicily’s generous share of UNESCO sites. In a capital once protected by four patron saints, the most venerated today is Saint Rosalia, who freed the people from the plague. Churches pop up around every corner: austere or ornate, Norman, Renaissance, Baroque and more, but most endearing are the hidden chapels in the Vucciria neighbourhood, their gleaming interiors entirely covered in white stucco angels. Yet top of the list must be the Cathedral founded in the 12th century, boasting a magnificent doorway and royal tombs, a stunning Treasury and a rooftop walk, up 107 spiral steps but worth the effort for the panoramic view of the city bristling with domes, the sea and the surrounding hills. Meanwhile, far below, visitors head for Piazza Verdi to pose on the steps of the Teatro Massimo and gaze at its refined neoclassical façade flanked by two bronze lions. Dating back to the late19th century, it’s the third largest Opera House in Europe,

Stroll along the road and you come to another architectural gem, the Politeama Garibaldi Theatre; unlike Teatro Massimo, this was built for the common people who preferred operetta, plays, equestrian shows and the circus. Yet one of the theatre’s greatest moments was the performance of Puccini’s opera La Bohème in 1896, applauded by a near delirious audience after a disappointing reception in Turin. Now home to the Sicilian Foundation Symphonic Orchestra, it dazzles visitors with its grand entrance and superb decorations, while on some guided tours you might see the original painted stage curtain weighing 450 kilos. As for Palermo’s palaces, most exotic are the Zisa and Cuba in Arabic style, set in the former pleasure grounds of the Norman kings, but most impressive is the Norman Palace, currently the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Following the Norman Conquest in 1072, the Arabic fortress was transformed into a sumptuous palace for the new Kings of Sicily, and as such is said to be the oldest royal residence in Europe. Beyond the 17th century façade, highlights include the splendid Ruggero Hall, named after Sicily’s first Norman King, and the 12th century Palatine Chapel. With its Norman architecture, its wooden ceiling in traditional Islamic style and its glittering Byzantine mosaics and dome, it exemplifies the rich blend of cultures which have shaped Palermo for over 1,000 years.

The school holidays are coming!

T

he holidays for children and young people gives the promise of 6 weeks of fun! For parents or carers it can be much more of a headache – juggling child care, planning and paying for a summer holiday and what to do if it rains and you are all stuck inside together. The number of telephone calls we get after the children go back to school hits a peak in January and September. Lots of people struggle to spend time together when they are used to their day to day routine. Planning for the holidays can make them smoother; Plan early. Don’t leave arrangements for child care until the last minute and try to have a contingency if the plans fall through. If you are going on holiday, plan in advance what you are taking. Give everyone simple tasks to do to get prepared in advance. It’s far less stressful than doing it all the night before! Get the kids involved in household chores. Everyone wants to enjoy the holidays so it’s not fair if all the workload falls onto one person. When planning days out, make a list of what everyone wants to do and schedule it so that everyone is happy. Having a wish list for both rainy and sunny days is a great way to do things. For long car journeys, find some fun games to play together while you are driving and take plenty of comfort breaks. If you are holidaying with others, make sure you are all aware of what each family wants from the holiday to avoid any tension while you are there. But most of all – plan for fun and laughter!

SHOULD I BE SELF EMPLOYED OR A LIMITED COMPANY?

A

nyone who is in business or is thinking of going into business should have considered what structure to use, whether it be Self Employed, Partnership or Limited Company. Being Self Employed, (or a Sole Trader) is the simplest way of running a business. You simply register with HMRC and account for your income and expenses each year through Self-Assessment. Forming a Limited Company is more complex and the admin burden often puts people off, however the benefits often out way the disadvantages.

Advantages of “going limited” Limit your Liability – being Self Employed means there is no separation between you and your business, meaning all business debts are personal debts, and your liability is unlimited. A limited company however, is a separate legal entity, which can give the owners protection. As shareholders in your company, your liability is limited to the amount paid for your shares, which can be as little as £1. This is assuming you haven’t given any personal guarantees. Credibility – being “limited” is often seen as being more prestigious and gives your business credibility. This can help win more work and grow your business. Pay less tax – one of the main reasons for trading as a limited company are the potential tax savings. Being Self Employed means you may be paying up

to 40% or even 50% in income tax and up to 9% in National Insurance. Companies pay Corporation Tax at just 20% on profits up to £300k. As an employee of your company you can pay yourself a salary, and as a shareholder you can receive dividends. We can calculate the most tax efficient mix of salary and dividend to minimise your own personal tax liability. Pension payments – set up in the right way, employer contributions could be made which will usually be tax deductible in the company, saving corporation tax.

Disadvantages of “going limited” Start Up Costs – you need to register a company at Companies House and ensure its set up correctly, as it can be costly to correct mistakes later. However, PCLG offer a low cost Company Formation service, starting from as little as £100. Increased Admin – accounts have to be filed both with Companies House and HMRC, and some basic financial information will be available to view on the public record. PCLG can ensure you meet all of your filing obligations. Mortgage Applications – it may make applying for a mortgage more difficult if you receive a small salary and the rest of your income as dividends, especially in your first couple of years of trade.

If you are in business or thinking of starting up and want to talk about “going limited”, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@ pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information. SUMMER READS There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month.

Flawed – Cecelia Ahern

Another book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal.

Best British Short Stories 2016 –

edited by Nicholas Royle Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best fiction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to find this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer.

The Hanging Club – Tony Parsons

There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping.

My Name is Leon – Kit de Waal

When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.

The Museum of You – Carys Bray

Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings.

The Sudden Appearance of Hope –

Claire North No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 12th July

Water, Water Everywhere

By Pippa Greenwood

With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden?

equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on.

If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better

It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds. In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now. Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the

downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative, always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a

light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. DRAGON BOAT RACING

D

ragon Boat Racing is one of the fastest growing athletic events in the world. The World Championships of Dragon Boat Racing have been held annually since 1976 in Hong Kong. What is most exciting, however, is the growth of the sport at the grass roots level and how it has become very popular with charities in recent years. The York Rotary Annual Dragon Boat Challenge will take place on Sunday 10th July between 10am and 4pm. For the 14th year running, 36 teams will battle it out on the Ouse, between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge, for the Challenge Trophy and other awards, including fastest Charity Team, fastest Armed Services Team, and of course the “Best Dressed Team” trophy. Each crew is made up of 16 paddlers paced by a drummer at the bow and guided by a helmsman at the stern. The idea is that power and rhythm are combined to achieve maximum acceleration and speed over a 250 metre course. This is a visually exciting event and the crews learn very early on that the best results come from working as a team. The teams have an enormous amount of fun and you can expect to see a very colourful display of wacky and inventive fancy dress outfits! The York Dragon Boat Challenge has raised over £850,000 since 2003 for a whole host of charities. The Rotary Club of York’s 2016 nominated local charities, supporting children, are Family Fund York and The Island York. In addition to the racing, there will be a number of stalls and a variety of activities alongside the River for all to enjoy. The York Rotary Club who organises this event was set up in 1921 and they currently have around 90 members who are very active in the community raising funds and supporting local charities. Entries for the 2016 race have now closed, however, you can find out more by visiting www.yorkrotary.co.uk

SHORT STORY

THE REMORSE OF THE ARISTOCRACY by Jackie Brewster

“I can’t allow you to eat that in here,” Violet said curtly to the lady who had just stepped through the door, “because of the sculpture.” Apart from the shrieks of children down by the lake, and the whistling of Ted the porter in the courtyard, her afternoon volunteering in the Coach House Gallery had been pleasantly undisturbed until now. The lady looked longingly at the choc ice she was holding. “I just need to cool down for a minute,” she said, and then, “I’m sorry, what sculpture?” “This, obviously.” Violet pointed to the installation by the hall’s artist in residence that filled half the room. The lady looked at the sculpture frowning. “What’s it called?” she asked. “There’s no sign on it.” “Not yet, it’s brand new.” Violet smiled patronisingly. “It’s called ‘The Remorse of the Aristocracy’.” The Coach House Gallery, while sounding very grand was just a converted stable barn, and prone to pigeons roosting in the rafters. Despite that, it was the coolest place to be on such a hot day, and probably the only place to successfully eat a choc ice before it melted. However, Violet’s role was to protect the artwork from sticky fingers and she took that role very seriously. The lady walked around the sculpture slowly and sniffed. “This just looks like a pile of old canteen chairs.” “The artist’s saying something important about the aristocracy.” What Violet most liked about art was telling visitors what to think about it, “And their value in today’s society.” The lady raised her eyebrows. A drip of melted ice cream fell from her choc ice. “You really need to take that outside, madam,” Violet said. “You’re making a mess.” “But the floor is rather dirty already,” the lady observed. As though to prove her point a flurry of pigeon feathers fell from above. “This is a very valuable sculpture,” Violet said, “we can’t have melted ice cream on it.” “But some of the chairs in this so-called sculpture have tea stains on them,” the lady said, and pointed, 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“and that one’s got a lump of chewing gum under the seat.” “If it has…” Violet hadn’t noticed the chewing gum before, and this lady was starting to annoy her, “it’s because the artist intended it. What he didn’t intend was for it to be covered in choc ice.” “I can hardly see how it’s going to make much difference,” the lady said. “Well, that just goes to show what you know about art,” Violet replied tartly. Honestly, sometimes she thought the hall would run a lot more smoothly with no visitors at all. With his trademark whistle, Ted backed into the gallery wheeling a sack trolley. “Afternoon ladies,” he said, and began dismantling the sculpture. “What on earth are you doing?” Violet cried, “The artist will go spare if he sees you meddling with that.” “He certainly will if I don’t get this lot shifted before five,” Ted said, grunting over a pair of particularly tangled chairs, “he needs this space cleared.” “But this is ‘The Remorse of the Aristocracy’!” Violet was mortified. “No duck, this is just a pile of old canteen chairs for the skip.” Ted looked up and snorted, “If you’re on about the new sculpture, it’s coming later.” He wiped the sweat from his forehead. “There’s been a delay, what with the heat.” The lady had been watching from the back of the gallery, a triumphant smile forming on her face. “Then I don’t suppose anyone would mind,” she took a large bite out of her choc ice, “if I eat this in here after all.”
