W

elcome to the July edition.

What does July mean for you? BBQs, cricket, village fetes etc. For my family one of the highlights is camping. As a child, I always spent my summer holiday under canvas. The camping fields of Talybont and Barmouth in Wales, along with the canvas ridge tent that leaked along the pole, are ingrained in my memory. The story of our car being towed off a field at Harewood House after a muddy camping weekend and my dad threatening to throw the tent in the bin, vowing never to camp again (we did) is funny now but we were all crying at the time! Despite this we have been taking our family camping since our children were very young! You can’t beat a camp breakfast on a warm sunny morning overlooking the Yorkshire countryside.

Finding reasons to spend time outside this July should be easy. Maybe much needed after a month of football! This month’s magazine is packed full of good reasons to get out and about. We have festivals, fetes, summer celebrations, gardens, sporting events, Mad Hatters tea parties, fancy dress parades and ice creams!

www.thehandymag.co.uk | @Handymag

Rumour has it that there will be lots of cyclists around this month dressed in stretchy multicoloured lycra; and the colour of Yorkshire will be yellow! Do you know the difference between a maillot à pois and maillot jaune? I’m sure many of us will be bemused by all the fuss surrounding the Tour de France but it will be a great showcase for Yorkshire. It will be a fantastic spectacle whether you battle through the crowds to watch the peloton race past or enjoy it at home. Well done to Anne Harrison, Upper Poppleton for winning the May competition. (Answers are on page 71). Until next month...

From skydiving to dragon boat racing, there are fun ways to fundraise for the Jack Raine Foundation, based in York. And if you are the adventurous type, then this UK-based, national charity is looking for you! The Jack Raine Foundation was established with just £500 donated from the local police authority. The organisation focuses on positive support and encouragement for vulnerable children and young people in the local community through helping communities stand up against child abuse. A volunteer at the charity, Ryan, explained: “We believe that every child and young person has the right to be healthy, safe and have a happy, bright future. We strive to help every child and young person who has been victim of sexual exploitation, neglect or abuse. We also help and support troubled young people who have become disengaged from their community.” The foundation has five key points which work in tandem with the principle that ‘Every Child Matters’. These five points form a crucial guide for volunteers and community workers at Jack Raine, and state that every child should be: HEALTHY - Enjoying a good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle. SAFE - Protected, living a life free from harm and neglect in a safe environment. ENJOYING AND ACHIEVING - Getting the most out of life and developing skills for adulthood. MAKING A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION Being involved with the community and society and not engaging in anti-social or offending behaviour. 6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ECONOMIC WELLBEING - Being prevented by economic disadvantage from achieving their full potential in life. Ryan continued: “Our core work is focused on early intervention, prevention and after-care support in three key areas, which include Child Sexual Exploitation, Alternative Learning Provision and engagement through sport. “These guiding principles are achieved through various projects in the community. One of the most effective projects has been engagement through sport. We encourage young people to engage in a sporting activity which they enjoy. Meeting up as a team provides a safe environment for youngsters to socialise, practice teamwork while becoming fit and healthy at the same time. We have seen children and young people gain confidence, and trust themselves and others. For young adults, there is a programme through which they can mentor and coach other children, helping them develop and gain confidence.” So if you are the adventurous type, or a good organiser and have lots of enthusiasm, contact Jack Raine and see how you can help make a difference. Find out more on 01904 632089 or

£12,000 has been donated since the inception of the exhibition in August 2000. The Tithe Barn is over 450 years old and was restored by volunteers 14 years ago for the use of the community. It is a valuable asset for a variety of occasions such as weddings, parties and meetings. This has also proved to be a delightful venue for the Art exhibition which has sustained interest among the artists of Poppleton, and attracted an increasing number of visitors from further afield each succeeding year. The exhibition is a most enjoyable social event for the village offering an opportunity for artists to publicly exhibit their work. Poppleton Art Exhibition has become a major village event and is well supported by local people and from further afield. Entry is free and refreshments are available. There is free parking outside and wheelchair access.

T

he 16th century Tithe Barn in Nether Poppleton makes for a perfect setting for the annual art exhibition and sale of Poppleton-based artists. The Annual Exhibition will take place in the Tithe Barn, Church Lane, Nether Poppleton over the August Bank Holiday weekend 22nd to 25th August. The exhibition shows the work of up to 30 local artists who are residents of the village and mostly completed during the past year. Usually over 200 pieces of art work are on show and for sale. A percentage of all the art sold at the event is donated to the Tithe Barn. After expenses, any balances are given to the Tithe Barn and over

The exhibition begins with a preview evening on Friday 22nd August from 6.30pm - 9pm. The exhibition will then be open 10am - 6pm on Sat 23rd and Sun 24th and then 10am - 4pm on Mon 25th August. Tickets for the preview are available from 01904 797217 at a cost of £5 which includes wine and canapes. 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A BETTER LIFE THE JOY OF CAMPING by Derek Thompson

Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com

W

e Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Eco-friendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs. After that, with a clear conscience and greentinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one.

pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a water-retaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come. Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives. The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way and the tent wrestled back into its bag. Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?

What could be more relaxing than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring and hayfever is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly. The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

YELLOW YORKSHIRE - 3RD JULY 2014

Y

orkshire Air Ambulance – we’ve all heard of this amazing charity, and are familiar with its two bright yellow helicopters which patrol the Yorkshire skies. Since the charity was set up in 2000, the YAA has carried an incredible 5,500 people across the Yorkshire region. A vast array of individuals have benefitted from the YAA, from premature babies to those involved in a road traffic accident. And like any organisation, the YAA requires funds to operate its two aircraft- and to the tune of £9,990 a day, or £3.6m a year! While Yorkshire has some of the UK’s most varied terrain, including remote rural spots and major motorways such as the M62, thanks to its charitable funding, the YAA is so effective, its two helicopters are always 10 - 15 minutes from the most relevant medical treatment centre. And you can get involved with raising funds for the YAA by wearing yellow on July 3rd, which is the day prior to ‘the Grand Depart’. The ‘Yellow Yorkshire’ campaign involves wearing something yellow on July 3rd, and donating £1 to the YAA to help save lives. If you are a business or organisation, you could organise a bigger, ‘yellower’ event! The YAA would love to hear from you, phone number below. But did you know that there are some things the YAA won’t do to raise funds? For example, YAA doesn’t operate any doorknocking procedures, such as door-to-door calls

asking you to sign up to a lottery, textile recycling or requesting regular donations to the YAA via your bank account. The YAA also gets reports of door-knockers who claim to be collecting for the YAA. If this happens, ask for clarity as to which Air Ambulance they are collecting for, and also ask to see their official ID. YAA does operate a very successful recycling scheme, collected through textile recycling bins located throughout the Yorkshire area, in partnership with BIUGroup. Therefore if you get a recycling bag through your letterbox claiming it’s for YAA, this is not the case. YAA does not operate a cold-calling service, nor does it get involved with third party organised charity events. You can still support YAA through regular giving or their lottery by going to the web site or contacting the office. Have you heard of chugging? Well, so has YAA and again it’s not a tactic the charity uses. Chuggers are charity collectors who approach shoppers in town centres and ask them to sign up for donations or join a fundraising scheme. While our volunteers and staff attend countless events throughout the year, they will not be chugging in your nearest high street!

So now you know how to raise funds on July 3rd, and also how not to go about it! Call YAA on 01422 237900.

ST ANDREWS SOCIETY OF YORK

W

e are a very sociable group who offer a warm Scottish welcome to those who love Scotland and those of Scottish heritage. We enjoy celebrating our Scottish and British traditions in true style. The St Andrew Society of York is affiliated to the Robert Burns World Federation, Yorkshire District which provides us with further social opportunities. Our President, and Council Members, all of whom are elected by our members, put together and run our excellent programme of events. If you might like to join us, do contact our Secretary on info@ yorkscot.org.uk who can answer all your questions and give you further details. Our Coffee Morning on 28th June is a fundraising event for the President’s Charity, which this year is Age Uk’s ‘In Safe Hands’ and held at Haxby Memorial Hall. The Ladies Circle will be providing refreshments and there will be all sorts of games, activities and stalls where you can buy home grown produce, all in aid of a very good cause. The entry fee is terrific value at just £2, which includes a cuppa and scone! This year’s BBQ is on 9th August and will be held in Temple Lane, Copmanthorpe. Old favourite games like slinging the wellie, boules, putting will all be there but this year there will be an entirely new game to play! Sorry but you’ll just have to come along to find you what it may be. It is always a good way to enjoy a summer’s day and the monies raised from the raffle and games will all go to support this year’s charity. We are holding a Referendum Soiree on 18th September. Whichever way the vote goes, and we won’t know that as we enjoy our soiree, there will be many who are delighted and many who are devastated by the result. We aim to have a lively, but good natured evening of debate as we wait to find out the result. Whether you are pro or anti do come to the wake and help celebrate this important event in our lifetime. For all of our events please contact info@yorkscot. org.uk to find out more.

BEAUTY

Perfect Nails

By Helen Taylor

You spend a lot of time and money on your hair, your skin and your makeup. But are you letting your image down by not giving the same attention to your nails? We’ve taken a look at three of the most recent and popular - nail services. CND SHELLAC NAILS Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudge-proof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option – when it has grown out you’ll need to start again.

Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off. LONG LASTING NAIL POLISH There are several reasons you might still opt for traditional nail polish. You might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower price. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux).

MINX NAILS If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice, offering a vast choice of designs in show-stopping colours, patterns and prints. Minx ‘foils’ work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated allowing Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. While still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-today tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days.

ON PROCRASTINATION

Reliable, professional ironing service.

By the time this article is published, all exams will be over and I will be free. That thought is an exceptionally comforting one from my current position – neck-deep and sinking further into a veritable quicksand of notes, textbooks and revision guides. You might have thought that the glittery promise of sunshine and opportunities lying at the end of the long dark exam tunnel would be something to inspire, and spur all us weary students onwards – yet, sadly, the tunnel is guarded by the big friendly monster known as ‘Procrastination’. Procrastination is kind to you, it lets you stay up until 4 in the morning watching entire series of TV shows back to back. It lets you take the morning off, and as many tea breaks as you like, and when it gets to 6pm, Procrastination whispers softly into your ear “It’s a little late to be doing all this hard work now, don’t you think?” It’s really amazing what you can get done with Procrastination on your side. Together, you can easily achieve a spotless bedroom, a really well-exercised dog, and a beautifully ordered sock drawer. Suddenly, the real importance of all of these tasks becomes astoundingly clear, all thanks to your brand new best friend Procrastination. What a team you make! Of course, the more you put things off, the longer and narrower the tunnel gets, until something that would have been easy if you’d started it a month ago becomes a serious struggle to get through. Despite being more fun than those things you’d really rather not be doing, procrastinating ultimately results in more stress, not less. Nothing can truly be enjoyed if you’ve constantly got that niggling knowledge that you should really be doing something more productive right now.

PEN-LIFE ADVISER IN UK ELITE

O

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

ne of the problems we face as financial advisers is a lack of trust and engagement with the general public. Adverse press and mis-selling scandals have unfortunately tarred everyone with the same brush.

over 20,000 IFAs in the UK so to be in the top 0.5% is a big deal. What makes it even more special is that Deb’s clients have gone out of their way to help her achieve this accolade and we’d like to thank them all.

Yet the vast majority of independent financial advisers have their clients’ best interests at heart. Properly effected financial planning can increase your family wealth and protect it from hostile attacks. That’s why I believe we add more value to clients’ lives than any other profession on the planet.

Deb is one of the most competent advisers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. She has empathy and a common sense approach, is easy-going and doesn’t blind clients with financial science and jargon.

We spend a lot of time and effort on obtaining independent accreditation – we are the only financial planners in the region to have both the Chartered Status and British Kit Mark BS8577 – which denote the very highest ethical standards and commitment to client care. Which is why I was delighted that one of our advisers – Deb Jacobs – was named in “The Times” Highest Rated Advisers in the UK. Being a “Times” Top Rated Adviser is a real achievement – there are

Top Tips from a dental professional

Orthodontics (Part 1) The dental development of your child goes through 3 phases the Primary, Mixed and Permanent Dentition. Most by Christine Parker parents seek our advice when BDS (GDC 72136) their children are in the mixed dentition (ages 6- 13). Most parental concern is that the teeth look ‘too big’, are twisted, crowded, have spaces or are darker in colour. Firstly teeth often look too large as they start getting the bigger adult teeth from age 6, however they still have their small child’s face. One of the problems for the orthodontist is that your childs face can continue to mature and grow into their late teens, what may appear as a rather crowded mouth at 9 may be perfectly aligned all by itself at 18. When space is short the tooth may twist so it can come through into the available space, again even quite severe twisting can improve as the space available increases. The same applies to gaps. The permanent teeth usually look darker and rougher in texture than the baby teeth, the front teeth may have quite bumpy edges, these are called Mammelons, they tend to wear down as we age. No amount of brushing will make the teeth lighter than their natural shade. If you think your child isn’t brushing properly get them to use disclosing tablets , these will stain any plaque purple or pink and demonstrate where to brush more. Where your dentist suspects a tooth may be missing or out of position they may take an X ray this will usually show if the tooth is present. Where they feel an orthodontic opinion is required they will refer to the local orthodontic clinic. If your child does require orthodontic treatment it is very important that their cleaning is excellent as they can develop cavities and stains on their teeth under the braces. Most orthodontists will not start treatment unless there are no new cavities and the teeth are very clean.

TIME They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them is going to be praying that isn’t the case. However you’re spending the summer, these timely titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass you by, almost in an instant.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Audrey Niffenegger Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twenty-three and he was thirty-one. Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, meaning Claire has no idea where or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life. It’s a heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again.

A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki

A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end.

The Time Machine

H.G. Wells Long before Doctor Who started fighting Daleks and regenerating, H.G. Wells gave the world his view of the future, through the eyes of a Victorian scientist. The Time Traveller invents a time machine that sends him to the year 802,701AD and discovers a peaceful people called the Eloi. But these descendants of man live lives of unspoken terror, the Morlocks. The time traveller must escape post-haste…if only he can relocate his missing time machine.

Hard Times Charles Dickens

Domineering headmaster Thomas Gradgrind is the personification of the Industrial Revolution. He is a man of facts and the hard truth and he banishes free-thinking, creativity and freedom of expression from his home and from his classroom. His utilitarian regime dominates Coketown and it is little wonder that his son rebels and falls into a life of crime, 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

whilst his obedient daughter marries a man she doesn’t love. Enter the carefree circus performer Sissy Jupe to spice the world up a bit, along with the weaver, Stephen Blackpool. It may be there could be a chink of light in this otherwise drab, industrial prison of a town.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Mark Haddon Chris doesn’t make for the most likely of detectives in this ‘whodunit’. He’s fifteen years old and he has Asperger’s Syndrome. He likes facts and order, routine and mathematics. When Chris finds his neighbour’s dog has been murdered he must rise to the challenges that life has thrown to him. The story has been published in a version for adults and another for children and isn’t, says Haddon, a book about Asperger’s. It’s a story about what it’s like to be on the outside looking in; and how varied the human mind is in interpreting what’s going on around us.

RACING DRAGONS A

popular Chinese tradition can be seen in full flow in York on Sunday 13th July.

The 12th annual York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge will take place on the city’s famous River Ouse, during which 36 teams will battle it out between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge. Since its inception in 2003, the race has raised an incredible £720,000 for worthwhile causes, and this year’s nominated charity is the Jack Raine Foundation. Club President of York Rotary Club, Nigel Naish, said: “The beauty of Dragon Boat Racing is that it’s a sport that attracts ‘grass-root’ participants. “The York race includes crews from public companies, armed forces, clubs and educational organisations to name a few.

“Each crew is made up of around 16 paddlers, paced by a drummer at the bow and guided by the helmsman at the stern. The idea is power and rhythm are combined to achieve maximum acceleration and speed over the 250 metre course. It’s an exciting, fast-moving event!” For the teams taking part, the York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge provides a chance to motivate, integrate and inspire the teams. Crew members learn very quickly to work as a team, while at the same time raising funds for worthy causes. And to create a festival atmosphere, activities and various stalls will be placed alongside the River, with visitor numbers hopefully hitting a few thousand. York Rotary Club, who organise the event, was set up in 1921 and has around 80 members who are very active in the York district, raising funds for charities throughout the year.

Entries for 2014’s race have now closed. However, you can find out more about the 2015 race on the website, www.yorkrotary.co.uk 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

We Take Care of Ewe. EweMove help ...you move!

W

hether you’re a firsttime buyer, a seasoned house purchaser or looking for a letting agency with a difference, EweMove York East is streets ahead with their approach to the housing market.

Run by husband and wife team Nick and Sarah Neill, their ‘VIP’ service for vendors and purchasers means clients can expect a friendly, professional yet personal approach that’s long been needed in the York area. Nick explained: “We offer a seamless service to clients. While other agents have several colleagues working on a house purchase or rental, I personally manage the whole process from start to finish.”

Sarah’s main role with EweMove is as a mortgage broker and speaks to the buyers so that the purchase is completed swiftly and with the best advice available. To reduce the stress even further, EweMove offers Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum packages for their estate agency services, so that vendors can select a plan that suits their requirements. If you’re a landlord, or are considering letting your property, then EweMove has bespoke software which helps filter and cherry-pick the best applicants through a series of in-depth checks, including a personal inspection of the tenant’s current property. Nick said: “Letting your property can seem daunting, but we’ve gone that extra mile to help make it a profitable and problem-free venture.

‘Rent Now, Buy Later’ scheme. We are more than happy to discuss this with clients.” Nick and Sarah, who live locally and have an excellent knowledge of the area, have contacts for emergency repairs, and can arrange viewings during the early mornings, late evenings, and weekends. Nick said: “Statistics suggest that around 95% of potential house purchasers or tenants surf the web rather than gaze through an agent’s shop window. “Our online listings include a bookable viewing slot, so the interest of the buyer is captured and acted upon immediately. “So, don’t get fleeced, as the saying goes! Come to EweMove and we can help you move!”

Inle Lake Myanmar

D

eep in central Myanmar (formerly Burma), Inle, ‘the blue sea in the Shan hills’, is a truly magical place glistening at nearly 3000 feet in the first foothills of the Himalaya. Stretching for 11 miles and crisscrossed by myriad channels, it’s unlike anywhere else in the country, a cool escape for visitors who relax in luxurious floating hotels and a lifeline for the locals who toil in villages perched on stilts above the water. Rice and sugar cane glow all shades of green on the banks but for the Inthar people, the lake is the soul of the community. From morning to night, lonely fishermen ply the waters, standing as still as herons in their tiny skiffs, rowing with one leg now and then so they can cast and pull the net with both hands. Placid or choppy at times, the lake is a bustling highway where tourists in long-tail boats bounce in showers of spray, children paddle their canoes to school, red-robed monks make their

42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

way to secluded shrines and women sheltering under conical hats head for the floating market to sell beads and T-shirts to visitors or fresh vegetables to the locals. For it isn’t just the fishermen who make good use of the lake. The hard working Inthar produce much of their food in ingenious floating gardens which they build with silt and weeds. Anchored deep down, long bamboo poles keep the allotments in place but they can be moved around, extended, strengthened with an extra layer, and best of all, there’s no need to worry about watering crops. All sorts of vegetables and fruit are grown on the lake but the small Inle tomatoes are said to be the sweetest anywhere and come spring or summer, great swathes of flowers bloom on the water. Meanwhile, a housewife scrubs her laundry on a rickety pontoon, children shampoo their hair at the water’s edge and a buffalo waits for its turn to have a bath. Huts and gardens mingle

their reflections in shimmering colours, framed by the blue and purple hills silhouetted against the sky. All is quiet but no one is idle. Every village hides a sprinkling of workshops where cottage industries have long flourished, handed down through generations. Spinning, weaving, painting paper umbrellas, crafting silver bowls and figurines, clay ornaments and pots, it’s a hive of activity but pride of place goes to extracting and weaving silk from lotus fibre. A hundred years ago, according to legend, a girl offering a lotus bloom to the Buddha began to weave the thread trailing from the stem to make a robe for the local Abbot. Today, highly valued and unique to Myanmar, lotus silk is woven into luxury items as well as monks’ robes and drapes for precious statues. The people of the lake are devout Buddhists and many shrines and pagodas peep along the shore, the most important being the glittering Hpaung Daw Oo with its stepped roofs and golden dome mirrored in the water. Devotees have covered the Buddha images with so much gold leaf you can no longer see their shape but once a year at festival time, they are gloriously paraded all around the lake on a magnificent golden barge resembling a holy bird. There are devotions and prayers, leg-rowing races and traditional dancing and for a few days, Inle comes into its own as one of the most colourful places in the land.

WHEATLAND’S EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY WOODLAND

T

he Wheatland’s Educational Community Woodland (WECW) is a not for profit organisation set up in 2009 to provide a woodland habitat for future generations and an important conservation habitat for flora and fauna in an area where woodland is scarce. This woodland is planted with over 5000 native trees and shrubs. There are mammals, fungi, insects, wildflowers and grasses recorded, many numbered bird/bat boxes, a feeding station and Wildlife Discovery Trail leaflets. The summer is a busy time at Wheatlands and the best time to catch a large variety of native butterflies. Join Joy Jones on the butterfly walk to learn more. Volunteers manage the woodland trees and habitats, recording wildlife and wildflowers on a regular basis. Education is an important aim of the group and school groups are catered for with visits and information about conservation, environment and sustainability.

Volunteers are always welcome at the woodland to help with maintenance and recording. If you are interested, please contact Barry Otley on 07870 585832 or email barryotley@btinternet.com or Max Driffield on 01904 793405 or email maxdriffield@aol.com.

MR HUMBERFLOOB This month’s lost feline soul is the exotically named Mr Humberfloob. Mr H. was given this grand moniker by the 6 year old daughter of one of the staff here who was eager to give a cat this special name…after all, naming cats is one of the perks of the job! We don’t know a huge amount about Mr Humberfloob’s past as he was seemingly abandoned by his previous owner and later brought in by a concerned neighbour. When he first arrived he was very shy and preferred to hide away. Since then Mr H. has been involved in an ongoing action plan to help him learn to trust us humans and we are seeing gradual improvements in his confidence. The hiding has mostly stopped and he is finding it harder to resist that natural cat nosiness. He

is very keen on his grub and this has helped us to bring him out of his shell. Mr H. is only a couple of years old and he would be best suited to a quieter home where he can take things at a gentle pace. We are sure that any new owner will continue to see even greater strides in his progress and enjoy the strong bonds that cats like this often form with their new ‘people’. If you would like to help this lovely lad achieve his potential please call us. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am and 3pm. If you would like to adopt Mr H. or our other cats, please contact us on 01904 760356 or york@cats.org.uk. All of our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance.

THE OLD CAT’S TALE Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets It’s not my fault I got smelly and old, That my fur is all scurfy, that my breath smells of mould! I really don’t mean to keep wetting the floor, It’s because I keep drinking so very much more. I’ve got ugly and skinny and have a bad gait, I eat all the time but continually lose weight. I sometimes have stragglers stuck to my end I try to keep clean but I struggle to bend. I used to be agile but then I got sore, With age came arthritis in my back, neck and paws I know I’m no fun as I’m sleeping all day, It’s tiring being old and feeling this way.

COOKING TRAVEL

Muscle and Potato Chowder Makes 4. Ready in 45 minutes

This filling meal-in-a-bowl makes a lovely weekend supper that’s ready in less than an hour. Most supermarket fresh fish counters sell bags of fresh mussels all year round, but if they are unavailable you can use 2 x 500g packs of mussels in white wine sauce and just reduce the fish stock to 300ml and omit the white wine. First clean the mussels. Scrub under cold 1. running water and discard any that are

cracked or do not close when lightly tapped. Pull away the ‘beards’ from the sides of the shells. Place in a bowl and set aside.

Heat the oil and butter in a large deep 2. saucepan or flameproof casserole. Add the

INGREDIENTS • 1kg fresh mussels • 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 100ml white wine • 2 baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small chunks • 350ml fish stock made with ½ stock cube • 200ml crème fraiche • 4 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley • Warm ciabatta or sour dough bread, to serve

shallots and fry gently for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes then pour in the wine and cook for a further minute

Add the potatoes and stir well. Pour in the 3. stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the

heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the crème fraiche and half the chopped parsley and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Add the cleaned mussels to the pan and cover 4. and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mussels

have opened – discard any that remain closed.

Ladle the chowder into warmed bowls and 5. garnish with the rest of the parsley and

more ground black pepper. Serve with warm ciabatta or sour dough bread.

For a spicy Thai-style chowder, add 1 6. deseeded and chopped red chilli to the fried shallots and 1 bruised stalk of lemon grass to the simmering liquid. Replace the crème fraiche with 150ml coconut milk and the chopped parsley with coriander. Serve with steamed jasmine rice.

Creating your point of difference is about understanding your unique selling points or USP. A successful USP should be truly unique, exciting to your target market, something that will get people talking, and something that can’t be easily copied. From this you will be able to create a guarantee. To deliver a guarantee effectively you need to be able to manage this internally. For example a tradesperson may give a guarantee stating ‘we guarantee to turn up at the specified time otherwise the chargeout fee is on us’. Internally the systems need to be in place to ensure this happens otherwise it’s going to be costly to the business. If you would like a free document to help you identify your USP’s and Guarantee simply email me mandyhildred@actioncoach.com I guarantee it will dramatically improve your marketing as well as your business.

EXPLORE HAXBY LIBRARY STUDIO 58 COMPETITION Back in March, Haxby Library hosted a competition for local Haxby and Wigginton Art Group, Studio 58.

The group were tasked with producing a piece of art entitled ‘My Library’ to reflect what their library meant to them. The entries were on display in the Library throughout March and local residents were invited to vote on their favourite. The winning entry was from Sue Clayton whose art display above will now be on permanent display in the Library! Well done Sue!

COMMUNITY GARDEN

The latest project to be undertaken in Haxby is to spruce up the Library garden in the hope of turning the space into a Community Garden where people will be able to come and share their plants, take cuttings etc and use the space to relax or read a book in. They are also planning to use the space for activities, such as children’s story-times, or the annual holistic therapy event. Word travels fast and the garden has already received many donations of plants and materials from local supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s. Local residents, volunteers and local groups have also been in offering their time and dropping off cuttings that will either go into the garden or be used to raise funds for other garden materials. If you would like to volunteer your help or can make any donations to the Community Garden,

COOKING MOTORING

The New York Motor Show By James Baggott

T

he New York Motor Show might not be the biggest event on the automotive calendar, but there were some still some treats in store for car fans in the Big Apple.

The night before the show, Ford chopped one up and rebuilt it on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, recreating a stunt they pulled off with the original back in 1954.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY CONCEPT It was launched on an aircraft carrier, next to a spaceship, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop - this launch is a massive deal for the manufacture.

It’s only available in blue or white, has a retro four speed auto box and chrome detailing. Under the “hood” is a 5.0-litre V8 producing 414bhp.

It’s packed with tech, including augmented reality that can project sat nav directions onto the smart glass windscreen, gesture controls that open doors without touch and the ability to remotely drive the car using a tablet or smart phone. How much will make it into production is unclear, but it’s exciting stuff. MERCEDES S63 AMG COUPE The world’s chief executives are sure to make their next meeting on time thanks to this luxury missile. With 577bhp under the bonnet, the monster S63 AMG Coupe can hit 60mph in just 3.9 seconds. It has a 5.5-litre turbocharged V8 engine and an interior that’ll please those used to five star hotels. Air suspension, an imaginatively-titled Magic Body Control system and other trickery helps keep caramel lattes from spilling on Saville Row suits. On sale in November it will cost £100,000. BMW M4 CONVERTIBLE Convertible? Cabriolet? We’re not sure which term the Germans prefer, but all we know is the BMW M4 looks absolutely stunning with its roof chopped off.

KIA SEDONA At last, Kia’s not-so-pretty Sedona MPV has been given the same plastic-surgery treatment as the rest of the range. The new model might still be a little bit van-like, but with the trademark Kia tiger nose and smart headlights, it looks a lot more stylish – and it needed it. The MPV has seating for eight as well as some clever trickery that can fold seats away and remove them. BMW X4 There were a number of models that didn’t make our top cars of the show cut, and this X4 was very nearly one of them. Let’s face it, the crossover fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. The maker has form here - apparently 240,000 people bought the equally visually-challenged X6. Borrowing engines from the X3, the X4 will go on sale priced from £35,590 – that’s a lot of money for a car only a mother could love. So why’s it included here? Well, we like manufacturers being brave – and revealing this with a straight face was certainly that...

The M4 features a clever three-piece folding metal roof and some not-so-subtle design tweaks. These include quad tailpipes, a larger front bumper and a tweaked kidney grille. The convertible will go on sale in September costing £60,730 with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six cylinder. The 0-60mph time is now down to 4.6 seconds. FORD MUSTANG 50TH ANNIVERSARY It wouldn’t be an American motor show without some muscle, and thankfully Ford has been taking its protein shakes and come up with this. 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

GARDENING

MEDITERRANEAN MAGIC

by Pippa Greenwood The truth is that producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent salads in just a few weeks’ time and salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious.

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter and whether seriously stylish or lowbudget they’ll do fine. Compost is important too, but as salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost but as salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend

YORK • JULY 2014 • ISSUE 103 a fortune. Growing-bags give perfectly acceptable results and you can save yourself a lot of money in the process. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it it’ll be quite adequate. Salad leaves are all the rage and if you grow your own you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. If you treat them as cut-andcome-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but you want to hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you

I find the quality of the compost in grow-bags isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need them they’ll be quite adequate. can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container too – perhaps a rim of salad leaves, compact lettuce, or even a few herbs? If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot. Sweet peppers also do well in pots, but again you need as warm and sheltered a spot as possible. Fresh herbs will not only transform your cooking but can make a salad something very special too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops.

Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. It’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind but still get enough sun. You can make your salad pot using crops raised from seed and sown directly into the compost – root crops such as carrots don’t much like being transplanted, and so are perfect for direct sowing. If you’re growing beetroot for its sweet juicy root, it too tends to perform better if direct-sown. Just make sure that the compost is kept moist at all times: As long as the container has plenty of drainage holes in it you shouldn’t have any problems with over-watering. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The advantage of this is that the containers out in the garden will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Remap (Rehabilitation Engineering Movement Advisory Panels) is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers formed into local panels to help people with disabilities achieve independence and a better quality of life. It does this by tailor-making equipment and ‘gadgets’ for persons of any age with any need or disability, these are often simple devices that can be made in the home workshop. The York panel of volunteer experts uses a referral system under the jurisdiction of NHS occupational therapists and Social Services staff. The volunteers make tailormade pieces of special equipment for disabled clients whose needs cannot be met from the commercial market. New volunteers are always welcome to use their skills for this worthwhile charity. Please contact the chairman for details of recruitment and local meetings.

WHERE WILL YOU BE WATCHING?

THE GRAND DEPART | WWW.LETOUR.YORKSHIRE.COM STAGE 1

>

LEEDS TO HARROGATE 190KM

T

he whole of Yorkshire is turning yellow and there are bikes everywhere from on the side of buildings, painted, knitted, in fields and definitely on the roads! The Tour de France is the most watched annual sporting event in the world, and on the 5th and 6th July, all eyes will be on Yorkshire. The 101st Tour will start in Leeds before visiting Harrogate, York and Sheffield and heading down south to Stage 3 in Cambridge. This is the first time Le Tour has visited the north of England having previously only made visits to the south coast and the capital. With the recent success of British riders in the Olympics as well as Le Tour, notably Chris Froome in 2013 and Bradley Wiggins becoming the first Briton to win Le Tour in 2012, the popularity of cycling has never been higher. You don’t need tickets to watch the race but you do need to get your place early as roads will be closed early in the day. In York itself, roads will be closed from midnight. The caravan of sponsor vehicles will leave York Racecourse at 9am followed by the Peloton at 11am. By 12pm the race will have left York centre and be heading off towards the Dales and the majority of roads will be open from 1pm.

Saturday 5th July

The 101st running of the Tour de France will begin outside the 19th century Town Hall in the heart of historic Leeds. From the steps of the concert venue the riders will head northwest out of the city centre and into the Yorkshire countryside. They will pass Harewood House, home of the Lascelles family for over 250 years, before they head to Skipton, gateway to the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park. Up to this point the route is fairly flat, but once they enter the iconic Dales the terrain gets steeper as the riders race a semi-circular route across the contours of the valleys. They leave at the north east edge of the National Park sweeping southeast through Leyburn and the cathedral city of Ripon, rejoining the flat roads to the pretty spa town of Harrogate. It is here at the end of a long straight line finish that we will discover who will be the first rider to wear the famous yellow jersey of the 2014 Tour de France.

STAGE 2

>

YORK TO SHEFFIELD 200KM Sunday 6th July

York is the venue for the start of stage two. After starting at Clifford’s Tower the peloton will head west passing through Harrogate once again before turning south and heading to Huddersfield via Haworth, home of literary sisters, the Brontës. From here the cyclists will be able to stretch their legs on a number of steep sections before they arrive at the gateway to the Peak District, on the edge of the Pennines. The slopes start to get steeper here especially the stretch leading to Holme Moss, renowned as one of the toughest climbs in the whole of Great Britain. There are still a few hills to cross before the cyclists arrive in the UK’s first city of sport Sheffield. The last hill climb of the day is less than five kilometres from the finish in the northeast of the city next to the Don Valley Stadium.
