Focus on innovation With Focus Fireplaces, Stoves & Living
ideal for smokeless zones. Manufacturing to the highest standards for over 50 years, the Worcester brand is synonymous with warmth and reliability you can rely on.
T
hings never stand still at Focus Fireplaces and Stoves. The increasingly popular York based company is expanding and improving in order to offer an even wider range of fireplaces, stoves, interiors and lighting to suit all tastes from the traditional to ultra modern.
Focus also offer the latest range of Reflex 75T gas fires from Stovax, with unbelievable realism. “Enjoying the warmth from a perfect flame behind glass is the ultimate form of relaxation and enjoyment,” says Julian. “Our new range of gas fires offers breathtakingly realistic flame effects that are almost indistinguishable from a real wood burning fire.” Featuring an all-new multi-burner log engine, this designer fire’s captivating realism can be tailored to taste with a broad range of styles and finishes.
“Times are changing, and we are moving forward with new exciting products,“ says MD Julian Somers. “For instance we now believe we can offer our customers the best wood-burning or gas stoves on the market, which tick all the boxes for design, innovation, and user-friendliness.” The company has looked to Scandinavia for these new additions, namely modern and free standing stoves from Jotul and Scan which offer the best of Norwegian and Danish craftsmanship. These timeless products make a link between past and present, a style which fits in with modern interior design, but will withstand short-term trends. Like everything at Focus Fireplaces, these are designconscious pieces which will suit the majority of homes. Likewise, there’s the new Worcester Bosch Greenstyle stove range with clean-burn technology, It’s not just about fires and fireplaces at Focus. The company has recently launched a new interiors showroom including a cutting edge lighting department with new additions from Där – and there’s stylish clocks, mirrors, giftware and furniture. Visitors can see a range of innovative, unusual and exciting products that cross the design spectrum from classical to contemporary, and offer choices for all home interior styles. Focus Fireplaces and Stoves has showrooms off Stockton Lane where you’ll be sure of a warm welcome, helpful advice and the best choice in the area.

High quality, hand crafted timber windows by Yorkshire's joinery experts.
I
mage Windows and Doors are experts in high quality, hand crafted timber windows and doors at affordable prices – and the quality truly is remarkable. The wood frames and doors can be made from Accoya Wood which has become a phenomenon in the joinery trade for its 50-year timber warranty. Image supplies to the trade and direct to the public, with Accoya being a greatly cost-effective option. Window options include Stormproof, Flush Casement, High Performance, Traditional Casement and Traditional Sliding Sash. Accoya is a solid product created from fast-growing, responsibly managed forests. It has zero toxicity and provides durability that exceeds even the best
tropical hard woods. It is fast becoming the material of choice for exterior applications and can be used for windows and doors, as well as a variety of others. The exceptional durability and stability mean that Accoya wood requires less maintenance, because paints and stains stay where they belong: on the wood. In fact, test results show that coatings last up to three times as long on Accoya wood – which is why we give a 12-year warranty on the paint. It is also naturally insulating, more durable and stable than other woods. This means windows don’t swell when closed and doors continually open freely. Accoya wood may be opaque, translucent or transparent coated, and its lower maintenance requirements increase its cost effectiveness. The Hidden Language By Mary Mahon
W
hen summer arrives, it doesn’t come alone. It brings with it sunbathing and swimming, ice-creams and barbeques, and best of all, holidays. Yet when we go out exploring the world, we bring back more than just good memories… The English language isn’t quite as English as you’d initially think. Our language system is a synthesis of words borrowed from all over the world; most everyday words that we use originally stemmed from countries through world-wide exploration! Believe it or not, many of us speak fragments of foreign languages without even realising it! Latin has had a colossal influence on European language, giving us a profusion of words. ‘Nice’, ‘lemur’ and ‘addict’ emanated from Latin, yet what did these words originally mean? If you were ‘nice’ in the year 1500, it wouldn’t be good; the complimentary phrase comes from the word ‘nescire’, meaning ignorant! Similarly, in our age there are all forms of addiction, ranging from dangerous ones such as alcohol and drugs, to more harmless addictions like videogames or collectibles. However, regardless of the severity, you are still technically a ‘slave’ through the Latin translation. Most interestingly is the ‘Lemur’, whose nocturnal nature earned it the Latin name ‘spirit of the dead’. If you claim something is a ‘disaster’, did you know you’re really blaming bad planetary positions, with ‘dis’ coming from the Greek ‘bad’, and ‘aster’ meaning ‘star’? Astrological superstitions have significantly impacted our language, even the word ‘lunatic’ (from ‘luna’), relates to the belief that the moons’ cycles cause insanity! Unsettlingly, taking out a ‘mortgage’ in French means you’re making a ‘death pledge’, and if that idea gives you a ‘nightmare’ – be warned! – in Old English the word ‘mare’ refers to a demon attempting to suffocate you in your sleep! Yet perhaps my favourite is the origin of the word ‘tragedy’, which in Greek, loses its morbidity as it means the ‘song of the male goat’. Undeniably, the English language is amazing; every word added to it has an entire unique history behind it, so I believe we should continue to diversify it, through traveling and exploring our Earth.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Convert your new or existing conservatory into a usable all year round sun room. The increased incidence of storms over the last few years has clearly highlighted the unreliability of mortar to secure tiles. Switch from unreliable mortar to more secure dry ridge tiles. With all the advantages it is not difficult to see why.
With the incredible u-value of just 0.18 (0.15 for the Scottish market) of the Lightweight Tiled Roof System you will never experience these extreme temperature changes ever again!

Books
Summer Escapes From future catastrophes to whole new worlds, this month’s reads are pure escapism. THE NIGHT BROTHER - ROSIE GARLAND Two souls – one body. Nineteenth century Manchester is home to Edie by day and Gnome by night. But as both start to resent the other’s presence, an internal war breaks out which threatens to tear them apart. Throw in suffragettes, love affairs and family dynamics, and you have a truly absorbing read. If you enjoyed Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, or anything by Angela Carter, this book is for you.
THE GIRL OF INK AND STARS - KIRAN MILLWOOD HARGRAVE Isabella’s village is under the control of the ruthless Governor Adori, but the surrounding woods are under the control of a force even more dangerous. Isabella dreams of crossing the forest and charting the Forbidden Territories. A girl is found dead, and Isabella’s friend, Lupe, goes missing. With nothing to guide her but an ancient map, her beliefs, and her determination, Isabella sets out to rescue Lupe. This children’s book has gained rave reviews and while it lacks the depth needed to truly appeal to an adult audience, it’ll keep 9-12 year olds enthralled.
MENAGERIE - RACHEL VINCENT A travelling carnival has come to town, complete with its menagerie of fantastical beings. Delilah has always thought herself human, but her reaction at the exhibits’ treatment is anything but, and she is locked away and put on display herself. Delilah befriends her fellow captives, refuses to accept her slavery and forms an uneasy alliance with one of her ‘handlers’. But is escape really an option in a world where she has fewer rights than an animal? An easy, enjoyable read, perfect for the sun lounger.
A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA -URSULA K. LE GUIN A boy wizard learning to control his powers, mystical lands, magical battles, dragons – this book has them all. First published in 1968, A Wizard of Earthsea tells the story of Ged – a boy who
saves his village from attack and is sent to train to be a wizard. He learns to control his power, but accidently unleashes a shadow creature that nearly destroys him. Like Rowling, Tolkein and numerous other fantasy writers, Le Guin’s work will appeal to older children and adults alike.
NAONDEL - MARIA TURTSCHANINOFF 19 year old Kariba falls for a power-hungry young man and reveals to him the secrets of her family’s spring: it can foretell the future and bestow health or harm. Once Iskan has harnessed the spring’s power, there is little anyone can do to stop him. He starts collecting women to his harem, treating them as little more than playthings. Naondel is told from the point of view of Kariba and the other women, over the span of several decades. Beautifully written, and at times quite harrowing, this will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
THE SPACE BETWEEN THE STARS - ANNE CORLETT Jamie survives a virus that’s wiped out most of humanity. She’s on a planet far from home, and far from Daniel – the man she once loved. Together with the handful of other survivors she finds, Jamie sets out on the long journey across the stars back to Earth. If you’re not a sci-fi fan, don’t let that put you off. The Space Between the Stars is much more about human relationships and fragile societies than it is about space ships. This has summer bestseller written all over it.

Short Story Tadpoles
Dennis sat on his bench, pond watching. The starlings were coming home to roost. It was his favourite time of day. He enjoyed the soothing sound made by the fountain playing on the surface of the water. Gaynor said the fountain was tacky - two little stone cherubs huddled under their umbrella - but Dennis liked it. His peace was broken by Gaynor running down the lawn towards him. “That was our Daniel on the phone, you’ll never guess what?” Dennis could never guess what when it came to Gaynor. “Is his car alright?” He searched Gaynor’s flushed face for clues. “Never mind his car.” Gaynor perched on the bench next to him, fizzing with excitement. “He took Carly for a twelve week scan today.” Dennis nodded. “Aren’t you pleased?” she asked. “I’m always pleased,” Dennis said, watching a dragonfly hover among the reeds. “That’s not even the best bit,” Gaynor looked like she was about to pop. “They’re only having twins!” A wood pigeon flapped its wings in the ash tree. “Crikey,” said Dennis. “That’ll be a handful.” “We’re going to be grandparents,” Gaynor frowned. “Is that all you can say?” He unscrewed the tub of fish food. “You’re not doing that smelly stuff now are you?” she said. “Of all times?” “Fish have got to eat, Gaynor,” Dennis said. He rather liked the smell of fish food; it smelled honest. Gaynor watched with pursed lips as the flakes floated across the pond’s surface. “Of course that thing will have to go,” she said finally. “What will?” Dennis looked up. “The pond,” Gaynor tutted. “You can’t have toddlers around a pond, it’s not safe.” “They’re not even born yet,” Dennis said indignantly. “We have to show good faith,” Gaynor said. “Danny and Carly won’t bring them round if it’s not child-friendly.” Dennis opened his mouth to object.
“It’s no good.” Gaynor looked at the pond as though it was toxic waste. “It’ll have to be filled in.” Dennis brooded, saying nothing. The only sound was the little cherub fountain. “Would you look at that!” he said suddenly. “What?” Gaynor said. “On the lily pad.” He pointed. “That little black fellow.” “What’s that?” Gaynor peered over the top of her glasses. A shiny creature clung trembling to the leaf. “It’s a frog,” Dennis said. “I knew we had tadpoles, this must be the first one to find its legs.” “I didn’t know we had tadpoles,” Gaynor said. “We’ve had a fair few,” Dennis said. “Sweet little chap, isn’t it?” “Very sweet,” Gaynor said. Dennis sat back and smiled. “Do you remember filling a jam jar with frogspawn when you were a kid?” he said. “Oh yes.” She stretched out her legs. “I can remember it like it was yesterday.” “Then they’d hatch into tadpoles,” Dennis said. “We’d keep them in the pantry,” Gaynor said, “then tip them back into the brook and watch them swim away.” “Did you have a fishing net?” Dennis asked. “I didn’t, I used to scoop them up with my bare hands.” “You were brave,” Gaynor chuckled. “Summer lasts for ages when you’re a kid,” Dennis said, and then there was silence between them. The wood pigeon cooed. “I suppose we could just build a little fence around it,” Gaynor said finally. “You know, to make it safe.” “I suppose,” Dennis nodded. “That would be no bother.” “We could buy them fishing nets,” Gaynor added, “for when they’re older.” “Not a bad idea.” Dennis smiled and put his arm around Gaynor. “Twins, eh?” He chuckled, gazing at the pair of cherubs beneath their stone umbrella. Summer safety road campaign
W
PCSO Andy Smith 5520
hilst the start of summer, good weather and lighter nights are welcome for most, officers from North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group may see things slightly differently. Figures from previous summer road safety campaigns show, more sunshine means more social drinking which leads to more people having one too many and getting behind the wheel. Alarmingly, North Yorkshire Police’s figures show a worrying trend. Over the past three campaigns the numbers of drink drivers who have blown over 100ug – nearly three times the limit, has grown year-on-year from 5.5% of those arrested for the offence in 2014 to 13% in 2016. This year the force, alongside partners from the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership, are appealing directly to members of the public. If you know of someone who is driving over the limit, pick up the phone and report it. Officers are keen to spread the message that if the incident is happening there and then – call 999, or for non-emergencies call 101. Sgt Andy Morton of the Roads Policing Group and lead in force for the campaign said, “The public have been a huge support with our previous campaigns and we continue to appeal to them. If you have information which would enable us to locate a driver over the limit, please contact us and let us know. “Be assured, officers from the Roads Policing Group will be out in force throughout the campaign, targeting drivers who are putting others at risk. With the assistance of the public, we can ensure we get dangerous drivers off our roads and make them a much safer place to travel. “If a member of the public contacts us and gives us the information, we will act on it. By picking up the phone and dialling 999 or 101, you could save a person’s life.” Throughout the campaign the force will be sharing films of short interviews with traffic officers who routinely deal with the aftermath of drivers who are over the limit. The interviews give an insight into the incidents that officers witness and deal with on a daily basis and highlight how destructive this behaviour can be.
“If you have information that could prevent this tragedy from happening to another family – please pick up the phone and tell the police.” Lorraine Allaway, who has been campaigning for tougher sentences for drink and drug drivers since losing her husband Bob to a drink driver in October 2015, spoke in support of the campaign: “I fully support North Yorkshire Police’s campaign to encourage people to report drivers who are over the limit. I would appeal to everyone, if you have any information about someone driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, please pick up the phone and call the police. “To lose a loved one in this way is completely devastating and it’s something that myself and my family have to live with, day-in day-out. We will always miss Bob, all those special events other family’s celebrate, like birthdays and anniversaries, just remind us of our loss. I would not wish this heartbreak on anyone. “If you have information that could prevent this tragedy from happening to another family – please pick up the phone and tell the police.”

The Great Beyond
Tech tools to help you wherever you may roam
W
hether you’re hiking up mountains or just trying to get around Glastonbury, travelling can be made much easier with a few well-chosen gadgets - and some of the available options might surprise you. Fancy a hairgrip that doubles as a saw? Such things exist: the Monkey Business Multi-Tool Hairgrip (around £8.50) comes in stainless steel and is shaped to include a little wrench, screwdriver, cutter and ruler as well as being a hair grip. You can also use it in shopping trolleys instead of coins, although that only applies to pre-2017 ones: the new twelve-sided pound coin has sadly made most trolley coins redundant. Fancy something a bit sturdier? Since the wonderful Leatherman became a global hit, there’s been no shortage of multi-tools that attempt to provide everything you could possibly need in a single gadget. If you have Leatherman ambitions but not the accompanying budget, you’ll find cheaper options from the likes of supermarket favourite Rolson, whose 36019 multi-tool offers 12 stainless steel tools for £13.41. Just don’t take it anywhere you’re not allowed blades, such as airports. If you’d rather have something a little more high tech, the world of wearables continues to grow: for example TomTom’s Runner watches combine activity tracking with GPS for around £59, and there are even GPS-enabled trackers for kids such as the Witmoving Wrist Watch, which is available for around £19. The benefit of such kids’ watches is that they enable a lost child to press the SOS button to call a parent or guardian, and the companion app can tell you exactly where the child is if they wander off. Just be aware that anything that uses a phone SIM, such as the Witmoving watch, will need a data contract: a
pay as you go deal from the likes of budget operator Giffgaff, which uses O2’s network, offers reliable coverage for a low price. You can spend much more on a fully-featured smartwatch that does pretty much everything, but for now if it’s pure activity tracking you’re looking for, a running watch such as the TomTom is a better and cheaper option. Chances are that wherever you’re going, you’ll want to keep your phone charged - and if you’re far from a plug socket that isn’t always easy. The most effective portable chargers, such as the Anker PowerCore 13000 (around £24), are designed to be charged at home and then used when your phone battery runs out of puff, and they boast a range of features to charge quickly and to turn off the power when the battery’s full. They’re a little bulky compared to emergency phone chargers, which tend to give you just enough power to make a few calls, but they’re good for multiple full charges. Solar chargers are more environmentally friendly - at least, after they’ve been manufactured - and they can be quite cheap: Amazon currently lists a number of decent 10000mAh solar chargers for around £15, some of which can charge multiple devices simultaneously and double as LED flashlights. Be aware that such chargers only use solar energy as a backup: like other portable chargers they’ve got a great big battery inside them that you’re expected to charge before you go out and about. The panel is there for peace of mind should your adventure last longer than expected, but in the British summer don’t expect a full charge to happen very quickly.

Ryedale Rose Festival
T
he Ryedale Rose Festival is a major event on the rose exhibitors’ calendar, and is well established at the RV Roger nurseries in Pickering, where more than 50,000 roses of 650 varieties are grown annually. The festival came to the nurseries 5 years ago, and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with around 1200 visitors over the weekend of last year’s event. The festival showcases the achievements of some of the UK’s top rose exhibitors, as well as being a free rose-filled weekend for the whole family, with live music, refreshments, talks, displays, and demonstrations. RV Roger Ltd is one of the UK’s top rose growers, and hosts this prestigious annual event, incorporating the British Isles Rose Society’s flagship annual show and awards ceremony. According to The Horticultural Trades Association, half of all garden owners grow roses somewhere in their garden, and new ones are developed all the time. This year’s Ryedale Rose Festival will see the launch of the ‘Joe Maiden’ rose, named after the much loved author and radio broadcaster who passed away last year. There will be only a handful of the ‘Joe Maiden’ rose available this season, and these will be auctioned at the festival to raise funds for Joe’s favourite charities. Bidding is expected to be keen! With free entry to everyone, the Ryedale Rose Festival will be a blaze of colour and scent, and a rare chance to see displays by some of the premier rose growers in the UK. Visitors will be able to admire the huge range and diversity of our nation’s favourite flower, and have the opportunity to stroll amongst 50,000 rose bushes in full bloom in the RV Roger rose fields.

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
Can Tanzania give us a lesson in our diet?
O
Rowley& Sons
Independent Family Funeral Services
“We listen, we care, we serve” by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
n a recent visit to Zanzibar and Tanzania I was able to provide villagers with some diet and oral health advice. Type 2 Diabetes is an emerging problem in this relatively wealthy East African country but the villagers had no previous advice on how changing their diets might reduce their chances of avoiding obesity, diabetes and tooth decay and gum disease. I delivered a short talk on avoiding full sugar coke cola, which apparently has an even higher sugar content than that sold here. I also talked about brushing twice a day instead of just once. We also recommended rinsing their mouths with water before brushing to dislodge food particles as they do not have access to interdental brushes. Because it was the month of Ramadan I was not able to demonstrate tooth brushing on them so I showed them how I would do it. The villagers use a mixture of westernised brushes but they are twice the size of ours and actually do not work very well. The traditional toothbrush stick is also used and is believed to have antibacterial properties. As these are biodegradable and only used for a day or two they may actually be of more use than the modern brushes. The diet of Zanzibar people is high in vegetable starch and fruit sugars which as they are a hard working bunch is not too much of a problem historically, however with the introduction of high sugar and fats from western diets the balance has been tipped with a huge increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes. As there is no treatment locally these people die prematurely in their early forties. It is interesting that the same health problems we suffer in the UK and Europe are introduced with the western style diet perhaps we need to look again at our diets in this country and return to simpler home cooked food.

Prague - Golden City of Bohemia a city, the UNESCO castle rises proud and strong, once the residence of the kings of Bohemia and still housing the presidential offices. It’s a vast complex with an enticing maze of towers and gates, museums, galleries and quaint medieval cottages strung along the Golden Lane. At the heart of it all is St Vitus cathedral where the crown jewels are kept under seven locks and keys. Not so far away is the Lesser District with its parklands and mini Eiffel Tower, but across the river the Old Town begs to be explored, an eclectic mix of styles from Renaissance and Baroque to Rococo, Art Nouveau and more. It’s an open book in the history of art but sooner or later the Old Town Square holds you spellbound.
O
n a majestic loop of the Vltava river, the ‘Golden City of Bohemia’ greets you with a touch of Venetian charm. Islands, bridges, canals, swans gliding along the banks, traditional steamers and tourist boats, it’s a romantic place where water tumbles over the weir and spires and domes mingle their reflections from morning to night.
Horse-drawn carriages rattle on the flagstones, bustling café terraces serve goulash, potato pancake and desserts doused in butter and cream, flowers bloom all around and crowds gather by the astronomical clock to watch the figurines come out to mark the passing of time.
Whatever the season, the Vltava mirrors the mood of the sky, as meek as a lamb or impatient and wild, but along the banks life moves at a leisurely pace and there’s always plenty of time to enjoy a candle-lit dinner at the water’s edge or stroll under the bridges.
Others stroll under the arcades or wander in the lanes in search of Bohemian glassware, porcelain, colourful textiles or garnet, the traditional Czech stone. The more energetic climb to the top of the town hall tower to gaze in wonder at the most fabulous views over the fabled ‘City of 100 Spires’ and the river wandering through its myriad treasures on the way to the Elbe.
For in the Czech capital, every bridge has a story to tell, none more so than the Charles bridge with its foundation stone laid at the auspicious time of 5.31am on 9th July 1357. Today Prague’s best loved icon still spans the river for over 500 metres, guarded by 30 statues of saints sculpted by famous Bohemian artists. For locals and visitors alike, it’s the heart of town: the place to see and be seen, watch the artists painting the scene, listen to music and enjoy the sunset when the river shimmers like gold.
According to legend, a Bohemian princess once dreamed of a city whose fame would reach the stars as it flourished on the banks of the Vltava. Perhaps this is why the ever-changing river has inspired so many writers and artists, including the 19th century Czech composer Smetana who dedicated a Symphonic Poem to its journey across the land. He called it ‘Ma Vlast’, my homeland, and today, with its unrivalled heritage and convivial ambience, Prague, its capital, is one of the most visited cities in Europe.
For 450 years it was the only bridge across the river, but others followed, linking the town on the right bank to the castle district on the left. On the hill top, beyond the luminous vineyards, so unexpected in

2017...help us make it a £million
I
The 15th York Rotary Annual Dragon Boat Challenge will take place on Sunday 9th July.
t’s that time of year again when 36 teams will battle it out on the River Ouse, between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge. On offer are the Challenge Trophy and other prestigious awards, including awards for the fastest Charity Team, fastest Armed Services Team, and of course the “Best Dressed Team” trophy. Each crew is made up of 16 paddlers paced by a drummer at the bow and guided by a helmsman at the stern. The idea is that power and rhythm are combined to achieve maximum acceleration and speed over a 250 metre course. This is a visually exciting event and the crews learn very quickly that the best results come from working as a team. The teams have an enormous amount of fun and you can expect a very colourful display of wacky and inventive fancy dress outfits. This year, after 15 years of running this event, York Rotary anticipate that the cumulative amount raised,
for a whole host of worthwhile local charities, will exceed £1,000,000! The Rotary Club of York’s 2017 nominated charities are Alzheimer’s Society and Macmillan Cancer Support and there are many ways you can help support the Dragon Boat Challenge and help them to “make it a £1 million” for local charities. This is an event not to be missed – as well as the Racing, there will be a Gala on the North Bank of the Ouse, with music, fun and games, food and festivities as Charity stalls line the bank and create a wonderful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Entries for the 2017 race have now closed, however, you can find out more by visiting www.yorkrotary.co.uk
Can you solve the case? Summer Reading Challenge 2017
T
he Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the school summer holidays. The aim is to encourage children aged 4 to 11 from across the country into their local library each summer and inspire them to read for pleasure.
Children can sign up to read at least six library books of their choice over the school holidays to complete the challenge. They can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books. After reading each book, the children go to their Library, talk about what they have read and get a prize. When they have read their six books they will receive a certificate to say they have completed the challenge. The 2017 Summer Reading Challenge starts on 15th July and runs until the 16th September and its FREE! This year’s theme is Animal Agents, illustrated by the UK’s best-selling children’s illustrator Tony Ross. As children read their books on the Challenge, they will be able to join in the fun with the Animal Agents by
collecting clues in their detective folder and helping to find out what is going on behind the scenes! There will also be an end of challenge event at Acomb Explore in October where 100 lucky children, who have completed the challenge, will be invited to attend. To find out more about the Summer Reading Challenge visit www.readingagency.org.uk or visit your local library.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Providing the best care for your animals By Sarah Hunter BVetMed MRCVS
W
e are pleased to announce that Station House Vets has passed the rigorous assessment by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) known as the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS). This award is voluntary but requires a lot of hard work to ensure that we are working to a high standard and providing the best care for your animals. As the award is voluntary, not all practices will sign up for the scheme, however we feel that by going through the assessment every four years it shows you how dedicated we are to caring for your four-legged friends. There are a range of minimum standards to be met including hygiene, 24-hour emergency cover, staff training, certain types of equipment and cost estimation procedures as well as a range of other specifications. There are different categories to apply for and so we are accredited in three areas: Core Standards, Small Animal General Practice and Equine General Practice, which is the maximum number of categories that we can be accredited in. The RCVS have recently brought out extra awards on top of the Practice Standards Scheme! These awards demonstrate where we have gone above and beyond the stringent standards of accreditation and will be given the title of ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ much like the Ofsted accreditation for schools. These awards will help you to identify where each practice excels and allow you to make a choice based on the skills that are most important to you. Always look for the blue logo when choosing a practice as this indicates that they have passed an independent assessment. If you would like to know more about the Practice Standards Scheme please go to the RCVS website: http://findavet.rcvs.org.uk/ accredited-practices/

Noah came to the centre as an unclaimed stray via one of our inspectors in a poor state. He is now fully recovered and is a very friendly lad who is eager to say hello to everyone. We suspect Noah is an ex working dog so will need an experienced owner who will understand his needs. We are looking for a home where he will be the only pet, he is suitable to live with children of secondary school age and over, but cannot live with cats or small animals Jill came to us after her owners sadly could no longer take care of her. She is a sweet natured girl who can be a little shy with new situations, but once settled she is an affectionate
cat. Jill will need a quiet home where she can snooze her days away in the sunshine and enjoy the rest of her years. She needs to be a housecat and the only pet and children of secondary school age year 7 and over.

Gardening Outdoor Relaxation
also during the journey there. It is amazing how many plants are seriously damaged in the short period of time between leaving the garden centre and arriving in the new owner’s garden. If you really want to ensure that everything goes smoothly, it’s worth taking a few very sensible precautions.
N
ow that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. Before you get too carried away, don’t forget to make sure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can take something home the day you buy it if it is really far too large to fit in your car. The number of plants I have seen travelling home sticking out through the sunroof of a car is quite amazing. In a position like this, however slowly you drive, the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged and it is quite possible that a not too pliable stem may be broken. If a plant doesn’t fit in your car easily, then take advantage of the delivery service - almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius. Admittedly it may mean that you

Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. have to wait until the delivery day for your area, but it is much better than seriously damaging your plant as you attempt to get it home yourself. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures build up fantastically fast in a closed car, even if you leave the windows or the sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be
safer for a slightly longer period of time, but even then you should try to travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are absolutely determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage to fine twigs. The garden centre should be able to provide you with something (and if not do you should do it yourself), but make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so bear this in mind before you do anything too foolhardy! Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary tents.
73
Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden. And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is well worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Then make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for a really useful selection of favourite gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.
