elcome to the June edition! A vintage theme to our cover this month. Get out your picnic basket, fill it with treats and take it to Scampston Hall for the Big Vintage Weekend on 13th and 14th June. In fact, this month’s magazine is packed full of good reasons to get out and about in and around York. We have festivals, fetes, gardens, sporting events and carnivals! There is May’hem at Piglets Adventure Farm Park, handicrafts to see at Wigginton Fair or try a ‘Grand Yorkshire Day Out’ at Strensall Carnival on 20th June. Let’s hope for perfect weather too! There was a report in one of the papers a few months ago about how careers in traditional trades are on the rise among young people. They are keen to get away from careers in front of a computer screen to do something more practical. It is great to see young people taking an interest in keeping our traditional trades alive. From blacksmithing to saddle-makers and joinery to plumbing and roofing, it is essential that we value the work of our local specialist trades. After all, our small businesses are the heart of our local communities and they contribute a huge chunk of money into our local economy as well as

employment. Many of our local trade businesses are family-run with generations being involved and making them successful concerns with a wealth of expertise and local knowledge. For those just starting out on their career, instead of taking the usual academic route, why not look into apprenticeships? Locally we’re lucky to have Derwent Training Association who offer a whole range of engineering apprenticeships with a wide variety of employers in and around our area (page 19). Well done to Mrs Leather of Haxby for winning our April competition. Until next month…

Buying or selling a residential property in the York area? Then it’s time to go ‘Green!’

B

usiness owner Simon Cartwright has over 13 years experience as an estate agent and set up Greens Estate Agents earlier this year. And Simon’s fresh approach to property marketing means spring has been a busy season so far. But what makes Greens a shade different to other Estate Agents in the York area? Simon explained. “We care for our environment and our beautiful city – we are committed to using pedal power and hybrid cars when attending valuations or viewings. “And while we use modern technology for marketing – websites, social media, floor plans, online property portals – there are tried and tested methods which still have their place today. “Potential vendors can contact us directly for a noobligation valuation and then hopefully place their property on the market with us.

6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“We don’t have a tie-in period and we are very proactive for our clients.” Greens also use a professional photographer for the all-important property images, along with an accurate, detailed floor plan and an Energy Performance Certificate, or EPC.

THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORKS By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 Almost everybody uses or knows somebody who does use one of the many Social Networks that are available now. Facebook, Twitter and other sites when used properly cause no issues whatsoever. There are an increasing number of people who fall victim to crimes related to their use of these sites and an ever increasing number of calls to the Police about comments written on these sites. It is a huge area to try to cover in a brief article although there are a few simple things that everybody can do to try and keep themselves safe on these sites and on the internet in general. First and foremost never put any personal details on any of these sites that you would not be happy to tell a complete stranger sat on the bus next to you. When somebody makes contact with you via one of these sites asking for such details you should never reply. Although they may say that they are legitimate you have no way of knowing who this person is or even which Country they are in. If somebody asked you for your pin number at the bus stop you would never pass it yet it is amazing how many people will give information of this nature out over the internet. Many people update Facebook profiles saying that they are going on holiday for two weeks and put photographs on their page to show where they are. Many people have far more “friends” on Facebook than they would ever consider actually talking to in person. The privacy settings on many peoples accounts are not set correctly allowing others to see updates to their account, or a friend of a friend will be told that you are enjoying a week in the sun. You have no way of knowing who gets that information and a burglar would love to have access to an empty home! The message is to treat the internet and social networks in the same way that you would deal with persons on the street. There are many great things about these sites but they should be treated with care. Used properly they can be very useful but do not put yourself or your property at risk by revealing more than you would wish.

An Appeal for York City Baths Club Volunteers

T

he ‘York City Swimming Club’ was founded in 1882. A second organisation, The ‘York Baths Club’ was founded in 1937 for competitive swimming. The two organisations amalgamated in 1951 to form ‘York City Baths Club’.

This section is run solely by a work force of dedicated volunteers, consisting of Level 1 and 2 Teachers, Lifeguards and Poolside Helpers, supported administratively by the YCBC Executive and Swim Committee members.

From then to the current day, thousands of local children have been taught to swim and a number have gone on to compete at the highest standard of top class National and International Competitive Swimming, right up to Olympic level! YCBC is run on a day to day basis by an Executive Committee of officers and ordinary members, freely elected at each year’s Annual General Meeting, giving their time and expertise on a purely voluntary basis. Our Teaching Section, is a vibrant and fun learning environment for children from the age of 4 years of age-upwards, who are introduced to the water, gain confidence through various teaching methods, and ultimately learn to swim all four strokes to recognised ASA standards.

Presently, there is a need to recruit additional volunteers to support the current growing numbers of swimmers within the Teaching Section. Therefore, if you hold a Level 1 or 2 Swimming Teacher’s qualification, Lifeguarding qualification, or would simply like to give some time to supporting the Club, we would very much like to hear from you (Even if you could spare just 30 mins of your time per week) If you are able to help, please contact Shelley Postchild at ycbc.workforcecoordinator@gmail.com Thank you for your help - a greater number of qualified volunteers will help us to continue to provide a high standard of quality teaching.

JEN’S COLUMN

Annual Events By Jen Grimble

Last month the Tour de Yorkshire brought thousands of visitors to our streets and highlighted the amazing versatility of our region. The event also signalled the start of our summer festivities, as June hosts two highly popular celebrations; the Food and Drink Festival, and the Festival of Ideas. Fun and education meet as these two annual events share the spotlight. In September York will host the main Food and Drink Festival, but for now, we can enjoy the taster weekend, which will run on 6th and 7th June. The event is a warm up for the big shebang later in the year. As always there will be local produce, incredible regional markets, and international cuisine, as stallholders bring extraordinary gastronomy to Parliament Street. Prepare for ample sampling and good-old-fashioned Yorkshire fayre, as the community comes alive for this much celebrated market. Just two days after this wonderful event comes to an end, the Festival of Ideas begins. Here, some of the cities brightest minds will contribute to talks, performances and workshops. This year’s theme is Secrets and Discoveries, exploring York’s clandestine history and revelling in our standing as a hub of learning. The festival, which takes place across the city between 9th and 21st June, will feature over 100 free activities to engage, educate, and excite. The strong community feel is a key aspect in proceeding, as the array of versatile events will bring people together. Partake in family fun day, Goodfest, or hunt for poetry around our historic ruins. So, as we reach the half-way point of another glorious year, we can look forward to the next six months and all the unique community events still to come. There really is nothing better than York in June; it is a month for sunglasses and sun-cream, so get out there and discover something new, because York’s events calendar has plenty to show for itself.

THE BIG TOP Roll up, roll up! June’s a time for carnivals, fetes and of course, the circus is coming to town. Whether these travelling entertainers bring joy or terror to the towns they visit, it’s all ‘fair’ game as far as we’re concerned, and it’s made for some great novels.

The Carnivorous Carnival Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen

Newly-orphaned scholar Jacob Jankowski decides to kiss his old life goodbye and skip town, hopping on a passing freight train. It turns out to be the travelling Benzini Brothers and their Flying Squadron, billed as ‘the most spectacular show on earth’. Bedazzled by the glitz and glamour of the big top and the circus performers, Jacob falls head over heels in love with someone he definitely shouldn’t and he soon finds out that carrying on the affair could be the most risky of death-defying acts.

Lemony Snicket One for the Young Adult age-group now and if you haven’t read any of Lemony Snicket’s offerings then you really must. The Carnivorous Circus is the ninth novella in the series and follows the continuing exploits of the orphaned Baudelaire children who are trying to escape from the clutches of the evil Count Olaf. In this instalment, the intrepid and inventive children must disguise themselves as circus freaks to hide in amongst the acts of the Caligari Carnival. Prepare for much craziness and mayhem…and baby Sunny in a beard.

GET YOUR HEAD IN THE (ACCOUNTING) CLOUDS!

E

veryone seems to be talking about “the cloud”, but what does it actually mean, what’s happening in this cloud and where is it?! Firstly, I’m no IT expert (I prefer to leave that to the professionals), but simply put, the cloud is somewhere at the other end of your internet connection. So why is a Chartered Accountant harping on about the cloud? Well, one of the fastest growing areas is “Cloud Accounting”, with more and more software providers offering their own version of an online accounting solution.

What is Cloud Accounting?

With cloud accounting, you access your accounts and bookkeeping software via the internet, through your web browser, rather than buying a program and installing it directly onto a computer. You can use it to: • Create and send invoices to customer • Track who owes you what • Manage expenses and cash flow • Track profits etc

Benefits of Cloud Accounting

Access your accounts from anywhere – as long as you have an internet connection, you can access your accounts anywhere, anytime, whether it be on a

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

laptop, tablet or phone. You could invoice a customer whilst out on the road, or check your cash flow sat by the pool. Low set up costs – you don’t have to buy a program up front, you simply subscribe to use it, usually paying monthly which also helps with cash flow. No updates required – the online software is constantly updated, meaning you don’t have to pay for expensive annual upgrades. No backups required – your data should be stored in a high security data centre which will have to meet certain standards and eliminates the need for you to back up your data files. Automated processes – many software providers have automated functions, for example links to your online banking, which can simplify the bookkeeping process Share your data with your Accountant – makes it easier to share information with us, and allows us to check figures for you.

Cloud Accounting tips:

Make sure Cloud Accounting is right for you and your business – it doesn’t suit everyone. • Make sure your internet connection is reliable • Try before you buy – take advantage of the free trials which most providers offer • Try and convert your old data – some providers will transfer your old data to the cloud

If you want to find out if Cloud Accounting is the right solution for you, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email: phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk Call: 01904 558300, or visit: www.pclg. co.uk for more information. PCLG is partnered with a number of software providers, including Sage and Xero.

THANK YOU

FROM CHURCHFIELD OPEN SPACE, WIGGINTON.

C

hurchfield Wigginton’s newly refurbished playground was officially opened by the Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor of York Councillor Ian Gillies on Wednesday 29th April. He was accompanied by the Sheriff of York Mr John Kenny and their ladies. A large crowd of local people including pupils from Wigginton Primary School and Wonder Years Pre-school saw the Lord Mayor cut the ribbon and declare Phase 1 of the project open. All the children got a bag of fruit, sweets and chocolate kindly provided by Tesco and Nestlé to mark the occasion. Thanks also go to ASDA who provided willing volunteers to help prepare the site. Peter Vaughan, Chairman of Wigginton Parish Council thanked all those who have made the PLAY FOR ALL project possible with grants, donations, support and time. Fundraising continues to further develop Churchfield with more inclusive play and exercise equipment. £18,000 has been raised towards the £26,500 needed.

EMILY...

ON RESPONSIBILITY Recently, it seems as though the ever present threat of adult responsibility is everywhere. The countdown on my phone never fails to remind me of the sickeningly short amount of time I have left in school, days which now consist of frantically cramming information into my head and hoping that it sticks. It’s with an odd sense of sadness, nostalgia and excitement that I approach my final few weeks of school, sugar coated with denial that something that has played such a huge role in my life for seven years is finally ending. Making my final university choices was a relief, the reality that in a few short months I will really be moving away finally sinking in. It’s now that my mum is desperately trying to ensure that I can survive on my own, on top of my school studies giving me ‘lessons’ on things such as cooking and cleaning. If this is growing up, I’m not sure I like it! Outside of school and university, this summer will mark my first holiday away with friends. It’s far too easy to think of these post exam holidays as a carefree jaunt, but so far all it has been is a lot of work! Who knew holidays could be so expensive? Who would’ve thought you have to think about serious things such as travel insurance and whether you want lost luggage protection? Or, how on earth do you get to the airport at four in the morning? It’s certainly something I was ignorant to on holidays abroad with my family, where my dad would take care of everything and my biggest responsibility was making sure I packed something to keep me entertained on the plane. It seems as though I am stuck in the in between stage of being an adult and being a teenager. The future is something that is so exciting and so terrifying I can’t decide whether I want to wish the time away or mourn each passing day of my childhood. My dad’s advice? Enjoy having your Sunday Dinner cooked for you while you still can. Emily 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

Budapest - Queen of the Danube’ alongside the Millennium Underground Railway which follows the same route, starting a few steps from St Stephen’s Basilica and stretching all the way to the city park. Among the many notable sights are the State Opera House, the nearby Franz Liszt Academy of Music and at the entrance to the park, the Museum of Fine Arts and Heroes’ Square where the semicircular memorial is described as ‘a history book made of stone’.

S

et in the Carpathian basin, Hungary’s capital is said to rank among the most beautiful cities in Europe. Here, the legendary Danube flows through the heart of town, meandering romantically around green islands and under iconic bridges. On the west bank, the wooded hills of Buda climb to 527 metres while to the east, the plain of Pest rises gently into the distance. Stroll along the promenade or sail on the Danube and as you gaze at the elegant façades, the domes and spires glistening with mosaics, it’s easy to see why the river banks form an integral part of the city’s World Heritage. On the eastern side, beyond the superb Chain Bridge guarded by lion statues, pride of place goes to the grandiose Parliament Building, bristling with pinnacles and turrets and topped by a splendid red dome. Stretching 268 metres along the river, with 27 gates, 691 rooms and a stunning 20kms of stairways, it was inaugurated in 1896 for

the Millennium which marked 1000 years of Hungarian history. It is home to the Crown Jewels and affectionately known as the ‘Mother of the Country’. On the Buda side, the Royal Palace rises on Castle Hill, one of the prettiest districts around with cobbled squares and traditional buildings. There are imposing statues and wrought iron gates, stylish colonnades and archways, a lofty church with neo-Gothic ornaments and the must-see Fisherman’s Bastion, named after the Guild once responsible for its upkeep, now a top attraction for its unrivalled views over the river and city. Beyond its historical complex, Buda is a select residential area while down town, Pest is all hustle and bustle, its streets lined with gleaming shops and architectural gems, ranging from neo-Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque, Ottoman and Art Nouveau. Andrassy Avenue, the 2.5 km long commercial hub, is protected by UNESCO,

With a lake which is an ice rink in winter, Botanical Gardens and medicinal baths boasting 18 pools in and outdoors, the park is a favourite haunt of city folks, just one of many venues where you can relax in this ‘land of 1000 hot springs.’ There are over 100 of them in and around town, including those on Gellert Hill prized since Roman times. The hill offers sweeping vistas over the city. But sooner or later, the Danube calls you back with waterside restaurants, panoramic cruises and bridges revealing ever changing views and architectural styles, from the contemporary Elizabeth Bridge to the iron Liberty Bridge where the last silver rivet was put in place by Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Budapest suffered much destruction in the past, but with its beautifully restored buildings, the ‘Queen of the Danube’ truly deserves its place among Europe’s finest cities.

NEW TOWING SUPACENTRE

T

owing specialists Harland Fletcher have opened their new Towing Supacentre at Flaxley Road, Selby.

And with summer on the horizon, it’s time to think of that cycle rack/roof box installation or trailer repair/ purchase. Harland Fletcher is a member of the National Trailer and Towing Associaton and has been accredited as one of only 51 quality secured accredited members. The Harland Fletcher team has a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of towing including tow bar fitting, trailer sales and repairs and towing equipment. Stuart of Harland Fletcher, explained: “Our new site at Flaxley Road provides a convenient location for every towing requirement. The fact that we are NTTA members with QSA accreditation gives customers peace of mind. The NTTA scheme is supported by the Camping and Caravan Club, the Caravan Club, the AA and the British Horse Box Society.

“We have recently become a Thule partner stockist so we have a large range of Thule’s top quality towing accessories in store such as roof boxes, roof bars and cycle carriers.” Stuart said: “The summer season is a busy time for towing vehicles, whether it’s a touring caravan or a cattle trailer going to an agricultural show. “And with cycling being the sport of choice at the moment, customers can call in and see cycle racks and other equipment so everyone can get pedaling!” Harland Fletcher is open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm, Saturday 8.30am to 3pm, closed Sunday. The new Towing Supacentre is at Flaxley Road, Selby, YO8 4BG. www. harlandfletcher.co.uk Check out our new Towing Supacentre

MOTORING Top 5 Eco Cars

By James Baggott @ CarDealerEd

A

s the costs to run our beloved petroland diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices. FORD FIESTA The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not without good reason. Although it’s not labelled an official

‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from £13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km. FIAT 500 The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from £12,715 and is the perfect city run around.

>> BMW I3 BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its onboard petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road. VOLKSWAGEN E-UP! The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonablypriced electric cars on the market, with five doors and an estimated driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini. RENAULT TWIZY Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hours to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Top Tips from a dental professional

TOOTH WEAR Studies have shown that dental anomalies are often more readily noticed when viewing a person than other physical by Christine Parker defects. BDS (GDC 72136) With time, age and lifestyle choices our teeth and mouth alter and the gleaming set of teeth we took for granted in our teens and twenties seem to be replaced by shorter and somewhat darker ones. Traditionally to repair the ravages of time we had to resort to crowning teeth which can be a destructive BEFORE process to achieve a good aesthetic result. Porcelain veneers were introduced but these again needed to have some removal AFTER of tooth tissue and were difficult to repair if chipped. Modern conservative dentistry now offers tooth shape and colour to be altered with little or no damage to the underlying tooth by placing white fillings over the front face of the teeth and repairing the chipped edges. These are a cost effective alternative to the porcelain based veneers and whist they may need to polished more regularly , if they chip they can be easily repaired. When combined with whitening they can have a very aesthetic result and make you and your teeth look younger. CONDITIONS AFFECTING RABBITS by Celia Carr RVN at Station House Vets

Now the weather is getting sunny It’s important to take care of your bunny Vaccinate for Myxo and VHD Treat for Fly Strike, Cheyletiella and Fleas. Myxo makes the rabbit unwell They grow lumps and the genitals swell Pus forms in the nose and the eyes Within two weeks the rabbit will die. It’s spread by contact with wild rabbits Or infected Bunny’s that co-habit Bites from Mosquitoes, Mites and Fleas Aid transmission of this nasty disease. No appetite, fever and lethargy Are signs of Viral Haemorrhagic Disease Bleeding from the mouth, rectum and nose Will lead bunny to curl up his toes. From five weeks they can have an injection Which provides them one years protection Treat rabbits for Biting Insects and Fleas Visit the Vets for MYXO-RHD. Cheyletiella, a mite, looks like fluff We know it as ‘walking dandruff’ It’s hard to stop it from spreading As it’s passed between animals and bedding. They cause red skin, hair loss and scabs It’s diagnosed by tape strips in labs As Cheyletiella can be host to disease Use a spot on for Mites and for Fleas. A nasty condition I really dislike Goes by the name of Blow Fly Strike Flies lay their eggs on the rabbits The next day they are covered in maggots.

Flies are attracted to faeces In warm weather this attraction increases Old, overweight or unclean rabbits Are the perfect host for flies to inhabit. The maggots hatch and begin to eat Shock sets in quickly and its hard to treat The rabbit may appear to be sleepy Have skin seizures and sores that are weepy. ‘Rear guard’ provides 10 weeks protection From maggots and Veterinary attention Keep hutches and rabbits clean and dry And use a screen to help repel flies.

MAJOR REFURBISHMENT WELL UNDER WAY Building work at York Cats Protection Adoption Centre on Huntington Rd. is well under way - as this ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture clearly shows. The Centre, that is undergoing a major refurbishment project, is temporarily closed whilst a new facility is built to provide safe new homes for the unwanted cats and kittens of York and the surrounding area. The old wooden sheds that made up the old Centre have been removed, the concrete bases have been lifted in preparation for the next phase of the project. Once drains and new foundations have been laid new buildings for staff and visitors will be built, alongside a new amenity block for the all important cat care activities. The Centre is also having new cat pens installed and the charity is taking the opportunity to 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

repair and improve some of their older cat pens and also to enhance the layout of the site. Deputy Centre Manager, Helen Curry, says “We hope that the new look Centre will be up and running by mid Summer and will provide an even better experience for the cats in our care and for members of the public who come to visit us.” Helen continues, “We have found homes for over 5000 cats since the Adoption Centre first opened in late 2001, with these important improvements and essential repairs taking place we will be able to help the next 5000 needy cats and kittens”. Although York Cats Protection is currently closed members of the public can still contact them for cat advice on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk As a registered charity, all of Cats Protection’s funding comes from the generosity of the cat loving public. ADDERS

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

The common adder is mostly found in rough, open countryside and woodland, and although it is the only venomous snake native to Britain, is not aggressive by nature and will only bite if it is threatened or cornered. They prefer to move on if given the chance to do so. On warm days the adders will bask in the sun on tracks and paths, but disappear into the grass when they feel the vibrations of footsteps. However, due to their inquisitive nature dogs can sometimes disturb adders whilst exploring which is why we start to see bites to the face or paws at this time of year. Most adder encounters occur between March and October. To prevent your dog encountering an adder, keep them to paths and under control (preferably on a lead) in areas where adders are likely to be (North York Moors, Allerthorpe, Strensall Common) If you know or suspect your pet has been bitten by an adder try not to panic. Contact your vet promptly for treatment. Do not attempt first aid measures

Marshmallow and Mayo came to the York Animal Home when their owner could no longer care for them. Their mother died when they were only 4 weeks old, but they have grown up well and now need someone to love them both and give them the attention they deserve. Dandelion and Thistle came to the animal home because their previous owners moved house and were not able to take

such as trying to suck out the venom or applying a tourniquet as this may cause further harm. Try to keep your dog calm and if possible carry rather than let him walk as this will help slow the spread of venom around the body. It is likely that your pet will be admitted for an intravenous drip containing anti-venom and pain relief. If he has reacted particularly badly to the bite he will be hospitalised overnight to be monitored and kept comfortable. Once the vet is happy that your pet is recovering well he will be sent home and usually reexamined a few days later to ensure the swelling has gone and the surrounding tissue is healthy. Bites from adders are rarely fatal and most dogs will make a full recovery.

them. Thistle loves to be nosey and likes to help out when their cage is being cleaned. Dandelion loves nothing more than to eat and laze about, hence looking a little bit chubby. They would love a big garden to run and play in.

GARDENING

Making A Pest Of Themselves By Pippa Greenwood They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone.

organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully.

Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year and they can breed rapidly. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring.

Visit Pippa’s website at www.pippagreenwood. com.

They can cause leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content and as the aphids cannot digest it all, their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants. Honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’. On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. Pinching out the shoot tips on beans often solves the problem. The woolly aphid attacks apple trees and is also seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. Encourage naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls which work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Faire is the

Heaven

Jane Sturmheit, Musical Director Geoffrey Coffin, Accompanist

Featuring a Requiem by the Canadian composer Eleanor Daley and British sacred choral music favourites by Parry, Stanford, Andrew Carter, John Rutter, Howells and others at The Chapel of the Bar Convent, York on Saturday 27 June at 7.30pm Tickets (£10/£7.50, students/children free) available from the Ticket Secretary (tel. 01653 691589) and on the door (if available) on the night.

Summer River

By The Pastoral Poet By calm meadows and fields of corn; Through ancient, peaceful countryside, Past sculpted boulders, water worn; Swirling over polished gravel, Waltzing whirlpools onward travel Giddily, down to salty tides. Curling around some silted shoal, Each curl, as if a coiffured tress; Here jaunty damselflies patrol The verdant isles of watercress. Hazy thermals rise and tremble, Where the listless cows assemble Beside the giving waterhole. Murmurings, softer than a prayer, Are filtered through rising vapours. Swallows, hawking the upper air, Dash and dart in lofty capers; Dipping low to snip at midges, Skimming under wooden bridges, Twittering, with never a care.
