elcome to our June edition.
At the time of writing, we’re in the throes of exam season in our house. Our last ever term involved with schools. It’s the end of an era; gone is balancing school pick-ups and holidays with work. I’ll have to find alternative distractions!

For those students leaving this summer, good luck with those exams. For those parents now less needed, deep breaths and remember, that whatever happens, it will be fine! At the time of writing, the election campaigns are just getting started. On announcing the election, it was as if the country took a resigned groan at the opportunity. But anyway, we should all take our chance to vote and trust that this election gives some end to the interminable talk on referendums where ‘no’ is not ‘no’ and ‘yes’ is at best at ‘maybe’! On a brighter note, there are two very different festivals happening in the area this month. Tickets are on sale now for the Ryedale Festival, which starts in July with great music and top class performers at beautiful venues around Ryedale. The brand new Atlas Festival, a ‘travel-based music and performance extravaganza’, promises entertainment from around the world. This starts on 29th July at Scampston Hall. See page 38 for details. Don’t forget to celebrate your Dad on Sunday 18th June. With five loud and opinionated daughters, mine has always needed appreciating! Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there! Well done to Anne Dransfield of Skelton for winning the April competition. All the best

China - Pandas in Chengdu to look straight into your soul. Wander along the trails and you gaze in wonder as you see pandas eat, sleep or play in large enclosures and, if you’re lucky, you may get within feet of a bear. But most of the time they’re far too busy to take any notice, for there’s bamboo to munch, trees to climb and mates and cubs to socialise with.
O
nly 1,000 giant pandas are believed to survive in the wilds of China, 80% of them in the south-west province of Sichuan where, in 1987, a Research and Breeding Centre for Giant Pandas was set up in a northern suburb of Chengdu. From the original six pandas rescued at the start of the programme, nearly 100 have been successfully bred, thus increasing the population without affecting those in the wild. Today this awardwinning centre is one of the best places in the world to see giant pandas in a semi-wild environment. Not surprisingly, the centre is a popular attraction for foreign and domestic tourists, including Chinese schoolchildren on their annual outing, but those in the know visit early in the morning to avoid tour groups and watch the pandas waking up, all set for their bamboo breakfast. It’s also a pleasant time to wander through the grounds, before the heat sets in, and enjoy over 100 hectares of greenery landscaped to resemble the bears’ natural habitat, with hills and lake, 400 species of trees and some 10,000 clumps of bamboo and bushes. In this natural environment the pandas are not as pristine and white as their cuddly toy counterparts, but despite their somewhat muddy bottoms you can’t help falling in love with those big dark eyes that seem
Besides the giant pandas, you’re almost sure to spot a few members of the red variety, much smaller and often going in pairs, sleeping in the trees, eating, lapping up water or just nosing around. Other rare breeds who found a home in Chengdu include blacknecked cranes, white storks and golden monkeys who live alongside song birds, egrets, peacocks and swans. Meanwhile the new-born pandas are cared for in the nursery, so tiny you can’t imagine they’ll ever grow into soft furry giants - but visitors who don’t mind the extra cost can have a peep or even a cuddle. But it is all in a good cause for this is a non-profit organisation and all funds are reinvested into the project. Besides the adoption scheme, the centre raises extra funds through various activities and the sale of panda memorabilia in order to sustain its twofold ambition: conservation and education. Conservation involves studying the behaviour and specific needs of pandas and encouraging breeding, naturally or, if that fails, by artificial insemination. Increasing numbers, they say, is the key to survival and the time may come when some bears born in captivity could be released into the wild. On the other hand, education means raising awareness about the giant pandas’ plight, not only in the Chengdu Centre but also worldwide by working with a range of partners far beyond the borders. Having settled in Edinburgh in December 2011, Tian Tian and Yang Guang haven’t managed to breed just yet but they are doing well and remain the only giant pandas in the UK.

Convert your new or existing conservatory into a usable all year round sun room. The increased incidence of storms over the last few years has clearly highlighted the unreliability of mortar to secure tiles. Switch from unreliable mortar to more secure dry ridge tiles. With all the advantages it is not difficult to see why.
With the incredible u-value of just 0.18 (0.15 for the Scottish market) of the Lightweight Tiled Roof System you will never experience these extreme temperature changes ever again!

Go out on the tiles
M
aking a choice about the tiles to use in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere else in the home is a serious business. The tiles on your wall or floor have a massive impact on the look and feel of the room you’re decorating, so it makes good sense to choose a good quality option from a designer tile showroom. In addition to the way your tiles will look, their durability, quality and ‘clean-ability’ will have an effect as well, and it’s important to know the product you choose will stand the test of time. Choosing the right tiles requires good advice, knowledge and experience. Ideally you need someone who knows tiles inside out, quite literally, and who can give you the design, style and decor advice that will stand you and your home in good stead for many years to come. Keith Bailey, owner of Continental Tile Studio, is that person. He founded the first tile shop in York many years ago and has been in the industry since
1972 – making him York’s most experienced tiles specialist. Add to this the fact that he has been an agent for reputable tile Italian, Spanish and French tile factories since 1980 – which means he is guaranteed to always bring style and quality design to the forefront. Continental Tile Studio is to be found on The Bull Commercial Centre at Stockton on the Forest, next to Dean’s Garden Centre. Tiles are imported from manufacturers from across Europe, hand-picked by Keith himself for their quality and up-to-date style. Browsing the showroom is a great way to get some ideas together for the right look for your home. If you’ve got a specific colour you know you need, or a particular effect you’re trying to achieve, talk to Keith who is always happy to share his knowledge and wealth of professional advice. Would you like the look of a hardwood floor with the durability of tiles? New in this year to Continental Tile Studio are wood-looking porcelain tiles from Italy. They look amazing, are slip resistant and come in a huge variety of sizes to suit any size or style of room. Continental Tile Studio is a great place to visit, whether you’re just putting your interior decor plans together or you know exactly what you want. With easy access, ample parking and a wealth of inspiration inside, it’s well worth a visit today. Contact Continental Tile Studio on 01904 400526, or email Keith directly at keith.bailey17@btopenworld.com. You can also visit their website, with an image gallery from their showroom, at www.continentaltilestudioyork.co.uk

Multiple Choice By Mary Mahon
Y
es or no? Left or right? Black or white? Life is a series of ongoing choices, and lately, there’s been many influential choices we’ve needed to make. It seems the further we venture into 2017, the further we seem to plunge into political pandemonium! Yet it’s not just the big, political decisions we make that affect us; every choice has the potential to shape our lives in big or little ways. Yet, whilst the future is brimming with endless possibilities, the exams we sit in our teenage years can enormously influence the direction of our future! The vast spectrum of subjects available means there’s something to inspire everyone, yet the way in which subject knowledge is annually tested inspires few. Churning out paper after paper, exam boards sometimes seem like factories, squeezing and squashing students into moulds of their design. Their mark schemes are so precise, they often test memory more than analysis, creativity or true understanding, alongside the students’ ability to stay cool under pressure. Take technology – most intricate devices are designed in a certain way for certain purposes. You wouldn’t bin your toaster because it wouldn’t play your favourite movie, or trash your TV because it wouldn’t toast your bread! And while many pieces of tech are made multi-purpose, they can’t be expected to excel in everything. My phone is great at many things, but it can’t do the washing up! So why are teens tested so strictly in every topic? If you struggle in exam conditions but blossom in creativity, what good are exams for you? Yet whilst they can be petrifying for some, they do have their benefits for others. For many, exams are positive; they’re reflections of years of hardwork and learning. Yet we have multiple choices; whilst school and exams are important, we can choose whether we let our results define our future. Everyone has their own special qualities that are ungradable, like the ability to make people laugh and smile. I believe that ultimately, life is not a materialistic competition, but a series of choices we make in order to try and find personal happiness.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Motoring Kia Picanto
four-cylinder; and a 1.0-litre turbo charged, 100bhp version of the three cylinder. We couldn’t try the latter but both the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre are punchy and more than adequately powered. Our pick is the 1.2-litre, which hits 60mph in 12 seconds, tops out at 107mph and returns 61.4mpg. Manual and automatic options are available across the range.
K
BEHIND THE WHEEL The Picanto will divide opinion. Older buyers looking for a comfortable ride will notice the improved suspension. However, the sprightly engines, quicker turn in and faster steering may make them feel too hurried behind the wheel - exactly what Kia is hoping younger buyers will appreciate.
LOOKS AND IMAGE Kia has worked hard to liven things up, with an extended ‘tiger nose’ grille, smart LED driving lights and a large front air intake. Double wheel arches add flair, there’s a ‘shark’ antenna and the GT-Line specification includes sporty red trim and a twintipped exhaust.
Overall there’s a noticeable improvement in both ride and handling, largely thanks to reduced weight and a stiffer body, but whether that’s suitable for you will depend on your driving style.
ia wants to ditch their blue rinse image and target a younger age group with their spiced up city car. The refreshed model teams sporty looks with a more focused driving style to woo young professionals to part with their cash. But are the tweaks enough?
SPACE AND PRACTICALITY The Picanto is Kia’s second best-selling model in the UK after the Sportage and is predominantly bought as a second car by more mature buyers. Kia thinks the new technology – like wireless charging for your mobile, parking camera and Apple CarPlay – will tempt younger, first time car buyers. Kia has created a little more cabin space over its predecessor by increasing the wheelbase and reducing the front overhang, but rear legroom is still limited. Up front you’ll sit shoulder to shoulder with your passenger, but there’s ample leg room and the driving position is comfortable. Autonomous emergency braking – which warns, then stops you, if it senses a crash – as well as a smart torque vectoring system that improves handling by braking individual wheels are also available. WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? Three engine options are offered: a 1.0-litre, 67bhp, 89g/km, three-cylinder; a 1.2-litre, 84bhp, 104g/km
VALUE FOR MONEY As the time of the test there were few details as to what options will feature on UK models. Kia UK will follow the conventional Kia strategy of one, two, and three levels of specification and the GT-Line, driven here, will slot between two and three. In the GT-Line model we tried at the Spanish launch, a seven-inch media screen, wireless charging for mobiles, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay all featured, along with a heated steering wheel and seats, climate control and electric windows and mirrors. VERDICT Kia has sharpened up the looks and driving dynamics of the third generation Picanto. In titanium silver or shiny red it looks striking, and will likely attract younger buyers who demand cool technology. However, these tweaks may put off the stalwart Picanto buyer. Kia is confident though, and is promising ‘modest price rises’ over the current range. The entry level model will be no more than £9,000 and the top of the range no more than £14,000. The World in a Weekend! Pack your passport for a weekend of travel experiences at Scampston
T
he Atlas Festival organisers promise a unique celebration of music, food, drinks and entertainment from around the globe right on our doorstep at Scampston Hall on 29th to 30th July 2017. Atlas is based on travelling and seeing the best the world has to offer. Alongside a great music line up featuring nearly every genre from world music to rap, hip-hop, chart, indie, dance, techno, jazz, plus many more across 4 stages, there is much more to see and experience. Organiser Lindsay Atkinson says, “The difference between Atlas and other ‘world music’ festivals is that we are not just focussing on the music, but also the experiences you get whilst travelling – the good, the crazy and the really different! There is lots to discover in Scampston’s gorgeous parkland from travel photography seminars to giant board games and meditation classes!”
Learn bushcraft with Ray Mears, enjoy inspirational travel speakers including Justin Miles who came back from being brain damaged in a car accident to a prolific explorer, street food cookery classes, the adventure park (where you can try out real outdoor activities such as rock climbing, surf simulators, stand up paddle boarding, yoga, martial arts etc.),

special areas such as the Atlas Backpackers based on a real hostel and the Moroccan Souk where you can find creative wares to purchase. “Our stages reflect the travelling theme; the World Stage has our headline acts, world music plus a mixture of musical styles. The LA Rooftop Club is cool and classy, offering jazz, live vocalists and burlesque. The Full Moon Party is based on Thailand’s famous party and is a mishmash of Dance styles and UV paint keeping everyone dancing all night. The Long Haul Campsite stage is for the campers only and features the best of new bands, acoustic sets and campfire ditties. Basically there is something for everyone!” Artists so far include Sunday headliners Reef, Fatman Scoop, Toploader, Sian Evans, Goldie Lookin’ Chain, Tall Paul, Rui da Silva, Dave Mun, The Shakers, Rose Betts, Panjabi MC, N-Trance, Blow Trio, Red Hot Chilli Pipers (bagpipe band), Pacific, Seeds of Creation, Rogue One, DJ Kippax, Jimmy K with many more still to be announced. The tickets are in the form of boarding passes, and passports are included where you can collect stamps at the event to win prizes. The organisers have worked hard to make this festival about the best of
travelling the world. Lindsay says “As far as I can see there is not an event like this in the UK!” Book your tickets and find out more at https:// atlasfestival.co.uk/tickets/ Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ events/703141053172113/ The current ticket price is £54 for a day, and £115 for the 4 day long weekend with exclusive classes and bands. Hovingham Village Market Next market - Saturday 3rd June
O
n the first Saturday of every month, February through December (with an extra special Christmas Market on the third Saturday of December), Hovingham Village is the picturesque setting for their unique Award Winning Market. Hovingham is 18 miles North-East of York and 8 miles away from Helmsley and Malton. Hovingham’s Market Charter was dated 1256; however, with the arrival of the steam railway in Hovingham in 1853 that Market closed. The current Market developed from the 2009 Hovingham Community Plan when over 83% residents supported a Local Producers’ Market. The Market is run by a team of enthusiastic Volunteers; they start setting up at 3pm on Friday; by 10:30am on Saturday morning over 50 stallholders present their wares, championing local producers and local products, to the 800 plus visitors from all over North Yorkshire and further afield. Popular stalls run out early and the Market closes at 1:30pm.
The Market supports a Community Café that provides essential sustenance to visitors, stallholders and the volunteers. This is run by a rota of Community Groups and has raised over £73,000 for more than 40 Community Groups in the last 8 years. Local Community Groups can also run their own Community Stalls, for free, to raise their profile and valuable funds in the Community. The Market is the focal point and social meeting point for residents, and is now established as a vibrant and successful event always ready to welcome new visitors and stallholders; details on the www.hovingham-market.org.uk website.

'Keep your pet' dog walk on the Knavesmire raises record £1,500
T
he dog walk on the Knavesmire organised by York charity ‘Keep your pet’ (KYP) has now become a fixture in dogowners’ diaries. This year’s walk on 30 April was the largest ever, with 120 dogs & over 200 owners. It raised a record £1500 which will contribute to the £5,000 p.a. running costs of the scheme, allowing a part-time administrator to be employed and publicity material produced to spread the word about the scheme. Stalls sold books, crafts and toys, and the two volunteers running the tombola survived the collapse of their gazebo in the strong wind. Competitions included ‘waggiest tail’, ‘sit for a sausage’ & ‘dog most like their owner’.
Disability was no barrier to taking part, with Great Dane Rupert being accompanied by owner Jilly on her mobility scooter. Volunteer Jill had spent the previous week baking, and the queue for her cakes, savouries and homemade soup stretched right out of the tent. Thanks are due to Jonathan Cowap of Radio York for his enthusiastic help, to Copmanthorpe Scouts & Harlequin for their generous financial donations, to Tesco & Pets at Home for their donations of prizes & doggie bags, to students of James College at the University of York for their practical help, & to the Racecourse for their facilities. Next year’s walk will be 29 April 2018 – save the date now! For further information please contact Keith Martin, Chair, on 07592 547326, email keepyourpet@ageukyork.org.uk or visit www.keepyourpet.co.uk

An evening with Stephen Booth at Haxby Memorial Hall “It was a warm summers evening at Haxby Memorial Hall, the place was packed to the rafters, anticipation hung in the air. Outside, the white and blue police tape fluttered in the breeze. The presence of Ben Cooper and Diane Fry was felt by everyone.” Stephen Booth creator of the Cooper and Fry crime novels, set in the Peak District, is coming to Haxby Memorial Hall on Monday 24th July at 7.30pm. A newspaper and magazine journalist for over 25 years, Stephen Booth was born in the English Pennine mill town of Burnley. He was brought up on the Lancashire coast at Blackpool, where he attended Arnold School. He began his career
in journalism by editing his school magazine, and wrote his first novel at the age of 12. Stephen is releasing his new novel in July and will be giving an insight into his books and signing his new release, so please join us and meet this fabulous author. To book a place for this fantastic event go to haxbymemorialhall.co.uk. Tickets are £5. Raising funds for the new Haxby Library. Numbers are limited to 160 places so be quick!

Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival 30th June to 2nd July 2017
H
appy 10th birthday!! The Burton Agnes Jazz & Blues Festival, which began in 2007, is celebrating its tenth anniversary over the weekend of Friday 30th June to Sunday 2nd July 2017. To help us celebrate we’re welcoming very special guests from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, home to the internationally renowned St Lucia Jazz Festival. Come and enjoy the best of Saint Lucian jazz talent, with the island’s famous rum cocktails and Caribbean cuisine. The festival is uniquely set in one of the UK’s finest Elizabethan stately piles, our very own Burton Agnes Hall! Over twenty five bands provide a weekend of Jazz and Blues from our manicured lawns and inside our ornately carved Great Hall. Civilised camping with hot showers in the adjacent park field, children’s entertainers, local ale and food inspired The Independent to describe the Festival as “Possibly the most enjoyable jazz concert I’ve ever attended”.

As always, bands will overflow from the outdoor main stage into the Great Hall, our shops and cafe courtyard, and the late night sessions in our bar tent. We provide music for all tastes, from those seeking an ambient accompaniment to a glass of wine in the majestic grounds; to the jazz or blues aficionado wanting to get up close to star performers. There is camping in the beautiful surroundings of the adjacent Park Field, with hot showers laid on. The child in all of us is taken care of by balloon artistry and face painting, and highlights of Burton Agnes’ grounds including a maze, giant games, jungle garden and woodland walk with forest creatures to find.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

‘Should I neuter my dog or cat?’ This is a question that a vet gets asked every day and, in most cases, the answer is yes; let’s look at why.
T
he underlying principle of neutering is to prevent reproduction, however there are also many behavioural and health benefits. For example neutering your cat will reduce how much they will roam, and therefore reduce the risk of injury in road accidents. It will reduce fighting and the risk of wounds, abscesses and spread of infection such as FIV (feline AIDS). It will also eliminate the chance of unwanted or unexpected litters of kittens. Neutering male dogs will reduce their straying response to bitches in season. In terms of health, neutering will eliminate risk of testicular cancer, and dramatically reduce the risk of prostatic disease later in life. With female dogs similar benefits apply. Neutering prevents problems associated with oestrus (season or ‘heat’) which usually occurs every 6 months, where during this time bitches must be kept away from entire dogs and supervised closely. It also prevents the risk of false pregnancy which can occur after a season and may be harmful - it can be distressing for both dog and owner. Neutering eliminates the risk of pyometra, a lifethreatening womb infection that can develop later in life. It also reduces the chance of developing mammary cancer, especially if neutered before the first season.
There are some arguments against routine neutering but most are not justified when explored more closely, and certainly the benefits outweigh potential risks. Neutering can predispose to weight gain, but as long as diet is appropriately managed this is rarely a problem. In bitches, urinary incontinence later in life can occasionally be associated with neutering but this is a condition that is easily treated in most cases. Neutering is often recommended between 4-6 months of age for cats, and from 6 months for dogs, although this is decided on an individual and breed basis after discussion with your vet; advice should always be sought regarding the risks and benefits in individual cases. The procedure is usually performed as a day-case and patients often make a comfortable and quick recovery. Contact your vet today to discuss the decision of neutering your pet. by Andy Yale BVMedSci (Hons) BVM BVS (Hons) MRCVS Battle Flatts Vets Pet neutering prices are now discounted by an amazing 20% OFF (and 30% OFF for all members of The Healthy Pet Club) until 30th June - call us now to book!

Dillys is looking for a new owner Dillys is a funny young cat. She previously lived in a home with lots of other cats and as a result was very shy and anxious when she first arrived. Luckily having the chance to have some personal space and no competition has had a positive effect on her and she is now a much happier cat. She does still greet you with half-hearted hiss, but then starts to roll around seeking attention and fuss! Dillys will probably be happier living in a quieter home, but we are certain that once she gets her paws under your table she will be the best feline friend you could wish for. Dillys has recently had cat flu, she is fine now but is currently in our isolation pens, because of this Dillys can only be met by special appointment (much like the Queen!) For further details, or to make an appointment to meet this lovely cat please call York Cats Protection Centre on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york.cats.org.uk
Arnold came to us as an unclaimed stray, via an inspector, after being found with a nasty wound to his tail, but he is now on the road to recovery and we are now able to find him a loving new home. He has flourished since arriving at the centre, going from a very scared cat who shook from head to tail to a very friendly lad who just craves attention. He would be best suited as an only cat and where any children are of junior school age and over. Frankie came to the centre after his devoted owner sadly passed away; he really is a lovely lad although quite shy on first meetings. Once he knows you he is great and
loves a fuss and being groomed. Frankie is looking for a quiet home where he can settle in his own time and feel safe. Frankie could possibly live with another cat and any children should be secondary school age, Year 8 and over.

Care Of Old Pets With Stiff Joints

boots of cars. Either lift them in and out or, if they are too large, ramps are available. 6. Both older cats and dogs will benefit from a thick padded bed in a draught free area. 7. Cats like to be in elevated positions to feel safe and secure so might benefit from placing something lower down so they can step up on to their spot. 8. Use a lower sided litter tray and possibly softer cat litter, such as a paper based one.
O
ur senior cats and dogs who have been faithful friends for so long may now be feeling their years and becoming a bit stiff in their old joints. Join pain in older pets is often caused by osteoarthritis which is a chronic degenerative joint disease that affects soft tissues and bones. You may notice that your pet is less keen to jump, walk or play; they may sleep more and struggle to get up after resting. Their personality may change. Sometimes this is shown as nervousness, depression or even aggressive behaviour. If a particular joint is affected you may notice the animal licking this area more than normal. Some animals become less able to groom themselves, leaving their coat to become matted in places or look unkempt and dull. Their toileting habits may change, and cats may struggle to get in to high sided litter trays. Cats may not be able to climb to their favourite positions, or stretch and sharpen claws on scratching posts.
9. Older pets often struggle to groom themselves as they are not as flexible. You may wish to start grooming them more often, and if you use a soft flexible brush like a ‘Zoom Groom’ you can gently massage them to ease discomfort. 10. Getting less active can lead to weight gain which can put extra strain on joints (as well as the body and organs). Keep control of their diet to keep them as close to their ideal bodyweight as possible. For some, these changes may not be enough, and your pet may need support and treatment from your vet supplements or medication. If you think your pet is in pain or discomfort please call us for help.

You may be able to help ease joint pain and stiffness by making a few adjustments to your daily routines: 1. When walking your dog, keep exercise steady and constant, and discourage vigorous running. 2. If your dog is only used to short walks, don’t take them on huge hikes - as their joints will suffer. 3. After exercise, put a light weight coat on your dog, to cover their body and upper joints (onesies for dogs), just while their muscles cool down.

Gardening Outdoor Relaxation
Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax? Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up. A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers produce wafts of really sweet scent.
W
hen you find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes.
Experienced company based in Strensall. INSURED TO 5 MILLION
If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height

of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with freedraining soil, perhaps to edge a border. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grottolike patch planted up with ferns is wonderful. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink. www.pippagreenwood.com

Marie Curie is counting on your cuppa! Host a Blooming Great Tea Party this June
M
arie Curie is calling on people in York to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party in aid of the charity this June. From 23rd - 25th June, Marie Curie is encouraging people to get together with friends, family or colleagues to host a tea party, bake sale or special tea break to raise funds. The money raised will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families. This year, the charity is being supported by John Lewis in their fundraising efforts, with every store getting involved and holding their own tea parties on 9th June, as well as donating a percentage of sales from some of their National Treasures product range.
Jennifer Carmichael, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser in North Yorkshire said: “Holding a Blooming Great Tea Party is so easy, you just pick a date, send out some invites and have a cuppa and some cake between 23rd- 25th June (or if those dates don’t work, then do it whenever you like!). You can make everything yourself or pop to the shops for some tasty treats, as long as you price each slice or put a donation box by the front door you’ll be sure to raise funds to help Marie Curie support people when they need it most. I’ll also be at the John Lewis tea party on 9th June, so please do pop along. And you’ll be able to register there and then to hold your own tea party!” To find out more or to register for your free fundraising pack, call Jennifer on 01904 755260 or email her at Jennifer.carmichael@ mariecurie.org.uk.
