elcome to our June edition.

As I’m writing (first week of May), the temperature is soaring and there is a sense of excitement at the prospect of a Bank Holiday bathed in sun. I could be out enjoying time in the garden - had my other half not treated the lawn with moss killer and fertiliser so I can’t walk on it! He was going away for work though and I suppose we can look forward to a lovely green lawn when it’s raining in a couple of weeks’ time! In the office we really value those quieter moments after we’ve sent an edition to print. Chasing down those last bits of editorial, adverts and community events, jigging and re-jigging space and checking the index before pressing the sign-off button with the printers is super stressful. I have every admiration for weekly or daily publications – I just couldn’t do it! It’s simply lovely for a few fleetingly brief days to feel we have a whole fresh month ahead. At the first opportunity we tend to have a team meeting, over cake and coffee at a local café, to regroup and start planning the next one. Our advertising makes up about 50-60% of our pages and is always in – it’s what pays for the rest! We then have (sometimes tense) discussions about what else we can include. We work hard to give some space to everything but sometimes there’s just so much going on. The summer months are often like this as they’re awash with local events, from small village fetes to larger community-run events. If you have a local event happening in July or August – or even September – please let us know early so we can save you some space. So it’s no surprise that this month’s edition is super busy. Our comprehensive event listings are worth a

Make a difference to young people in York Local charity The Island are looking for new volunteer mentors “A mentor is somebody who takes you out and talks to you and really takes your mind off things.” is different so it is important to have a range of mentors to support diversity of children and young people. There are a wide range of volunteering opportunities available from the 1:1 mentoring to group provisions to specific targeted project work. Full training will be given.

The Island provides a mentoring service to young people aged 8-13, and to disabled young people aged 8 to 18 in York. The Charity links children and young people with fully-trained volunteer mentors, who, by means of weekly activity sessions, offer one to one support outside of school and the home over the course of a year. Supportive ongoing relationships develop whilst also providing ‘an Island of time and space’ with undivided attention to encourage development in confidence and self-esteem. It is a regular and reliable space to talk about feelings, difficulties and concerns, helping children and young people to address problems and work through difficult transitions in their lives.

Mentoring makes a difference

The Island are always looking for reliable adults who have the ability to listen, and who feel they can develop a positive rapport with a young person in an honest and non-judgemental way. Each relationship between mentee and mentor

“I like having a mentor because it gives me somebody else to talk to other than my mum and I need this sometimes.”

Volunteer mentors provide: • Access to positive recreational activities in the community • Time with a reliable adult role model • A consistent, supportive relationship through a period of transition or difficulty • Space outside the home and school to talk and be listened to • The opportunity to develop new skills and Interests

“I love coming to the group, I don’t fit in with a lot of other people my age, this is like my second family.” The Island organises a DBS check for all prospective volunteer mentors, as well as providing full training (OCN accredited and Certified), support and supervision. The training covers areas such as communication, child protection, and equal opportunities. Through this process mentors often learn more about themselves as well.

You could make a lasting difference in the life of a young person. For further information or to download our application please visit www.theislandyork.org or contact us at enquiries@theislandyork.org or York 01904 628449.

Short Story The Ice Sculpture

Mel was filling vases with peonies for the top table when a lady wearing huge sunglasses strode into to the marquee. “This all looks rather tragic,” she announced to no one in particular. Behind her, a delivery man wheeled a squeaky trolley carrying something the size of a sheep hidden beneath a white sheet. Grunting, the man lifted the heavy object onto the table reserved for wedding gifts and handed the lady a clipboard to sign. “How quaint,” she said, “in LA we’re completely digital, you never see pens and paper anywhere.” His task complete, the man scurried out of the marquee as though in a hurry to escape. “Are you here for the wedding?” Mel asked, placing the last vase in position. “You bet.” The lady removed her glasses and surveyed the marquee. “I’m Pauline, the bride’s aunt. Just flown in.” She then fixed her steely gaze upon Mel. “Is there time to do something about these sorry-looking flowers?” Mel held her tongue. She’d been up since four decorating the marquee for her friend Abbie’s big day, and had just been congratulating herself on how beautiful it looked. “This desperately needs touch of glamour, wouldn’t you say?” Pauline said. “In Hollywood we know how to throw a wedding.” “Is that where you’re from?” Mel asked, hoping to change the subject. “We moved out there six years ago,” Pauline said smugly. “Our pool is bigger than this whole tent.” “Cool.” Mel nodded, already tiring of Abbie’s boastful relative. “Make yourself useful and remove this sheet,” Pauline said, pointing at the strange object she’d just had delivered. “Be careful, what’s underneath costs more than you earn in a year.” Quietly seething, Mel gently took hold of the corners of the sheet. She could feel cold emanating from whatever was beneath it. Gently she lifted it. “Wow!” she said, standing back. “What is it?” “Botticelli’s Birth of Venus,” Pauline said curtly. “If you lived in LA, you’d know that.” To Mel it looked like a dumpy, naked lady standing on a seashell. “Is it carved out of ice?” Mel asked.

“You bet,” Pauline pouted. “Remind you of anyone?” Mel peered at the sculpture’s face, which was already starting to glisten in the heat. “I’m not sure,” Mel said, though she had her suspicions. “Is it you?” “That’s right,” Pauline purred. “It’s what we in Hollywood call a conversation piece.” “Lovely.” Mel frowned. She could imagine what kind of conversation Abbie’s wedding guests would have about it. “Won’t it melt?” she asked, noticing puddles of water already forming on the table. “Well, hurry up and turn on the air conditioning.” Pauline glanced irritably around the tent for the nonexistent air conditioning unit. “Which reminds me, you need to rearrange the seating plan so that I’m closest to it.” “I’m sure Abbie will love it,” Mel said, feeling not at all sure. “Perhaps I should let her know you’re here?” She had a sinking feeling her friend’s big day was about to become all about managing the needs of Auntie Pauline and her awful ice sculpture. “Abbie?” Pauline asked. “Who on earth’s Abbie?” “The bride,” Mel said dumbfounded. “The bride is Sara, you silly girl,” Pauline said hotly, “and she’s getting married here, today, the twentyfirst of June.” The two women stared at each other. The ice sculpture slowly dripped and Mel felt a pleasant calm descend upon her. “What’s the time difference between here and LA?” she asked. “Eight hours,” Pauline said tetchily. “Why?” “You’re a day ahead of yourself.” Mel smiled politely. “Today’s the twentieth. You’ve come to the wrong wedding.” By Jackie Brewster

Dalby Forest - the perfect place for a pedal! If the recent Tour de Yorkshire excitement and lovely weather inspired you to get back on two wheels, this is the place for you. Whether you’ve just bought your first bike, or are happy shredding through rock gardens, Dalby offers a fantastic opportunity for off-road cycling. Exploring our stunning forest on a bike will leave you grinning ear to ear. Hassle-free parking on-site makes things nice and easy. Before you set off, pick up a map and familiarise yourself with where you’re going.

Explore miles of footpaths, world-class bike trails, Go Ape and Tree Top Junior, Forest Segway, bike hire, play areas, picnic sites, cafes, fantastic scenery and Dalby Activity Centre.

The Ellerburn trail is a two mile multi-user pathway for everyone to enjoy. It’s also accessible for disabled cyclists and safe for children learning to ride. The trail runs along Ellerburn Beck so it takes in beautiful valley views as well. As you gain confidence, the green cycle route is an 8 to 12 mile ride along the high plateau around Adderstone. You’ll travel on forest roads and grass tracks with a few short climbs and descents. It’s a great way to see different parts of Dalby. As you crank up through your cycling gears and gain more skills and fitness, you can tackle the blue and red routes. For extreme and experienced riders there’s Dixon’s Hollow bike park and the World Cup cycle trail. These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Milan Cathedral door greets visitors with stunning bas-reliefs, while the 18th century sundial is still used to set the clocks around town. Large enough for 40,000 people, the interior is striking, with five broad naves supported by 40 columns. At 45 metres, the central aisle is the highest in a finished Gothic church and is decorated with impressive stained glass windows. Up above the apse, a small red light marks the holy place where a nail from the cross is kept. On the Feast of the Holy Cross in mid-September, the archbishop of Milan is slowly hoisted up in an angel-decorated basket to bring the relic down for display on the altar.

L

isted among the largest churches in the world, the Duomo rises on a magnificent square at the heart of Lombardy’s capital. It is dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity, an iconic landmark which took almost 600 years to complete. The last gate was inaugurated in 1965. Work began in the late 14th century by the church of St Maria Maggiore. Foundations were laid for three naves, soon increased to five as both the local bishop and duke aimed to raise the city to new heights. A canal network was designed to transport material. Gothic architecture would rival the great cathedrals in northern Europe but flexibility and innovations were welcome. Marble was used, foreign architects, artists and craftsmen joined the Italian team, and on this ancient pagan site building progressed unusually, from back to front. It started with the apse while the façade of St Maria Maggiore remained in use until 1682. The new one was only completed in the 1800s by order of Napoleon. Elegant buildings line the vast panoramic square but all lead the eye to the Duomo, stretching 92 x 158 metres. Inside are 98 gargoyles, 135 spires and over 3,400 statues which found their niche around the cathedral. The pink-hued marble of Candoglia cleverly hides the brickwork, playing all day long with light and shade to take your breath away. The main bronze

Statues, frescoes, sarcophagi, pulpits and the largest organ in Italy – there is much to see inside the cathedral, but most famous is the 16th century statue of St Bartholomew Flayed, a sad disturbing figure by Marco d’Agrate. More enticing are the three superb altars by Pelligrino Tibaldi, who was appointed by archbishop Borromeo to lighten up the old Gothic style with the flourishing Italian Renaissance. The treasury is housed in the Duomo Museum, a separate building next to the Palazzo Reale, where displays include some 200 items, tapestries, paintings, terracotta models, statues and more. Visitors could easily spend an hour or more in the cathedral but most exciting of all is the rooftop walk. Beyond the first terrace accessed by a lift are narrow passageways and slippery steps up to the wide open space of a safe but steeply-slanted roof. Up there, above pinnacles, flying buttresses and statues, the golden Madonna rises on the very top to bless the city at her feet. Views are superb and in clear weather the Alps are visible. It’s the perfect place to reflect on this unique building and the work of so many architects and artists over the centuries. Mark Twain described it as ‘so grand, so solemn, so vast’ and across the square, on the equestrian statue flanked by lions, Victor Emmanuel II, first king of the newly united Italy, certainly seems to approve. Got Some Time To Spare? Marie Curie is looking for new volunteers to join the existing York Fundraising Group to raise money and awareness in the local area. Fundraising Groups play a huge part in ensuring Marie Curie is able to provide nursing care to people living with a terminal illness, offer information and support, and fund vital research into end of life care. Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser says: “Being part of a Fundraising Group can fit around your own personal commitments, as long as you’re enthusiastic and willing to work as part of a team that’s all we ask! Everyone has different skills to offer, which is why our groups work so well. There are currently four wonderful members in the group, and they’re desperate to welcome new people with new ideas of how we could raise more money!”

Some of things you could be doing include: • Helping with public collections at local supermarkets and shopping centres • Placing and emptying collection tins in local shops and businesses. • Organising events and encouraging other people to fundraise for Marie Curie • Being the friendly face of Marie Curie at all events and collections you’re involved in Jennifer continues, “Volunteering means you’re enabling us to care for and support more people living with a terminal illness in North Yorkshire. Every one of us in the UK will be affected at some point by a terminal illness, and we need support so that we can provide the care everyone deserves at the end of their life. Help us to help us help more people. Simple as that!” If you would like more information about the Fundraising Group or other volunteering opportunities, please get in touch with Jennifer on 01904 755260 or jennifer. carmichael@mariecurie.org.uk.

10 Electric Vehicle Myths Busted. By James Baggot carefully seal all of the electrified components to make sure there aren’t any problems using car washes, or driving or charging in the rain.

5. You can’t go very far

Most electric vehicles now have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles becoming the norm – and the average journey is less than nine miles.

6. There’s nowhere to charge them Confusion surrounds the running and operation of an electric car. Here, we try to clear that up.

1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car

A National Grid report warned that home networks might struggle to cope with high-capacity car charging. However, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, so there’s little chance of the network being overloaded.

2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars

Generally, the base price of an EV will be slightly more expensive, but manufacturers compensate by offering a generous specification so that with the government’s £4,500 zero-emission vehicle grant taken into account, they’re a pretty good deal, plus have low running costs. What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, costs will reduce – the new Nissan Leaf starts at £1,500 less than the old one.

3. They’re more likely to catch fire in a crash

Concerns about crash safety are largely driven by a couple of high-profile Tesla Model S fires in 2013. The EV maker upgraded its underbody battery pack protection in 2014 but also noted that the odds of fires in its cars were “five times lower than those of an average gasoline car”.

4. You can’t drive them in car washes or when it’s raining Water and electricity don’t mix, so manufacturers

Long trips require a bit more planning, but charge point locator Zap Map indicates there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. Plus, rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes.

7. The batteries don’t last very long

Batteries do have a finite life but most manufacturers offer battery leasing for a monthly fee and will replace it for free when needed. Others offer replacement warranties, with five- to eightyear cover the norm.

8. EVs are less environmentally friendly across their life cycle

The energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car. However, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle, and that will continue to improve.

9. Battery disposal poses a huge environmental issue

It does, but the EV boom has encouraged lateral thinking to improve recycling rates, with companies taking used EV batteries for use elsewhere, such as home energy storage.

10. They’re boring to drive

Modern electric cars can be genuinely fun to drive, particularly thanks to the high-torque motors, which make acceleration brisk. Tesla takes this to extremes with its Model S, which reaches 60mph in less than three seconds – comparable to the new McLaren Senna supercar, with its petrol-powered twin-turbo V8.

Journey in Malton with Ryedale Book Festival

yedale Book Festival invites guests to join them on their inaugural Journey Fest Weekend this summer.

The Festival, which holds literary events throughout the year in the Ryedale district of Yorkshire, is trying something different this year - its first journey-themed weekend, Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018 (inclusive). Sarah Tyson, Festival Director, said: “The event will include appearances from some the best travel and nature writers as well as fiction favourites, history, a craft workshop and traditional storytelling.” The weekend begins on the morning of Friday 29th June with former airhostess Toni Mackenzie, who penned the bestselling self-help title, ‘Your Flight to Happiness’ following a life-changing experience when she crash-landed. Followed in the afternoon with a paper craft workshop led by York artist Lu Mason who will be helping people to design and make a mobile from re-cycled maps and atlases. A special Journey for Freedom dinner takes place at the Old Lodge Hotel, Malton, on the Friday evening with guest speakers Christina Lamb and Emma Jane Kirby (pictured), authors of ‘The Girl from Aleppo’ and ‘The Optician of Lampedusa’ whose books have been described as putting “a human face on the refugee crisis”. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Refugee Council charity that is working in North Yorkshire.

from storyteller Ian Douglas. Sunday 1st July will appeal to ramblers of all abilities as Andrew White, presenter of the television series ‘Walks Around Britain’, will lead a guided walk to Scampston Park (about 6 miles), ending with a visit to Malton Show. Sarah concludes: “Summertime is wonderful time of year to celebrate journeys of every kind and we look forward to meeting new friends in Malton this summer.” Tickets from www.ryedalebookfestival.com

Tom Jones

on headlining this years Music Showcase and being back with The Voice Sir Tom Jones, one of the biggest names in the music business, is set to return to York Racecourse to entertain the crowds on Music Showcase Friday evening, 27 July.

“The York races crowd were tremendous on my last visit, I’ve always loved outdoor shows and it’s always lovely to be asked back, we’re going to have some fun.”

Your popularity never seems to wane and your fanbase continues to attract new, younger generations, why do you think that is? It’s unavoidable and true that all performers and artists go through ups and downs. The only thing you can do is have confidence in yourself and your abilities and hope that the work you do is well received. It’s impossible to predict that moment in time when somebody who sees you will be the person who will offer the next opportunity. And who knows where that opportunity will lead? You’ve played at York Racecourse before (2015 was the last time), what is it about the racecourse shows that you enjoy playing as we know you have done a few around the UK before? The racecourses put on a great night out for everyone. Who wouldn’t want to come to see the world’s best horses and jockeys run, have excellent food and drink, have great fun with their friends, and see top-notch entertainment?

What can people expect from a Tom Jones concert that wont have seen you before? If someone hasn’t seen me live before, then they will get more than they ever imagined. This is the same for all live performances (if they’re good) — and it’s the reason why people spend their hardearned money and precious time to go out and experience a live show — they will get to know the performer much better and they’ll be taken to a wonderful place. If there was one show that you’ve done throughout your career that you could relive, can you tell us which one and why? You can never relive the past in the same way, so although I appreciate and enjoy the memories, I always look to the future. With such a catalogue and recent critically acclaimed albums, how do you keep your set lists interesting for you but also ensure your audience goes home happy? By mixing it all up and keeping things fresh. Actually, most people are delighted by surprises. They feel invigorated when they’ve experienced something unexpected. There are a few things I keep the same as well, simply because they are so good as they are. It’s fair to say you’ve recorded a lot of different musical styles throughout your career, have there been any genres that you haven’t done and would like to explore or genres that you just don’t want to touch? Although I’ve been pretty flexible over the years, of course there are genres that I just wouldn’t touch

37 because it wouldn’t sound genuine coming from me. However, there are always elements of things that are worth having a crack at, as you never know if a contribution from me would work as a unique flavour for a producer or artist. We’ve heard that you used to own some horses in the 60’s, how hands on were you and did you get enjoyment out of it? Would you consider ownership again, even as part of a syndicate? I love horses but never had the time to be very hands-on, I left that to the experts. I never thought about an investment, but perhaps I will! It’s great that you’re back with The Voice, was it an easy decision to make when ITV got in touch? Once I got the measure of things from the producers, it was an easy decision. I’m having such a great time with my fellow coaches this year, and the whole ITV production team is excellent to work with. Does the fact its on ITV rather than the BBC make any difference to how the show is working and the chances open to the acts coming through the series?

Well, that depends on so many things. The fact that ITV is a commercial venture does help the record company integrate into the process, but ultimately there are so many factors at work that contribute to the success of an artist. Being on The Voice is just one opportunity, and it’s a helluva test of talent and personality. If the contestant can get through to any point in the show, then take away what they’ve learned, they’ll be better off for it.

Gardening Colourful Containers. By Pippa Greenwood

C

olourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull back yard or a gloomy terrace or patio. But rather than just using containers from the garden centre, why not make some wackier, more unusual planters? With a little bit of imagination and ingenuity, it is amazing what you can achieve. Plastic flower pots, especially the larger ones, make a useful and practical home for all sorts of flowers, but they’re not exactly pretty. Use them, by all means, but transform that boring plastic by wrapping it in hessian. Available in a range of colours from classic pale brown to reds, greens and blues, it’s weather tolerant and tough but looks great.

64

Go for a single colour to match in with existing garden features, or even the colour of your front door or window frames. Alternatively, create a pattern of wild, fantastic colours and make your own planted-up art gallery. Plastic pots can also be made more exciting with a bit of planting around the sides. Before you fill the pot with compost, cut holes just over an inch in diameter at regular intervals around the sides of the pot. There you have it: you’ve created a planter with great side-planting holes, perfect for small bedding plants, allowing you make a tower of flower power. Just fill with compost to the base of the lowermost holes, add plants through the holes, add more compost to the next layer of holes and continue upwards, finishing off with plenty of colour on the top. Acrylic paints are a great way to colour a boring or discoloured container, and they’re quick drying

too. Go for a single colour to match in with existing garden features, or even the colour of your front door or window frames. Alternatively, create a pattern of wild, fantastic colours and make your own planted-up art gallery. Get creative with some mosaic tiles from your local craft or hobby store. Covering a container may take a while, but it’ll be a lot of fun and if time is short you could always just make a mosaic rim. Use rich colours to make a Moroccan style pot. When winter comes, its best to bring a mosaic pot into a frost-free spot to ensure it weathers the worst of the weather in style, or if you can get hold of the grouting adhesive used for swimming pools that should make it more weather resistant. The bigger the tyre, the bigger the planter – from wheelbarrow to tractor, there’s lots of potential. Make a deeper planter by stacking two or more tyres on top of each other, fill with compost and get planting. For a really striking effect, plant trailing flowers such as trailing geraniums around the edges so that they cascade over the sides. Try planting up an aged wheelbarrow: it’s great for

65

a larger display or even for permanent planting, and as long as the wheel still goes around you can even move the display around to brighten up different areas of your garden! If there are no holes in the pan of the barrow, make sure you place a layer of gravel or stones in the base so that the compost does not become waterlogged. Turn a punctured wellington boot or one that’s simply too small into a stylish planter. Fill the foot and ankle area with gravel or grit for drainage and to make the wellie more stable and less likely to fall over, add compost and plant up the top. You can also use acrylic paints to jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is totally dry before you start planting. Don’t bin your old gardening, walking or work boots as they have planting potential too, and because they tend to have heavier soles and are lower to the ground they can even make useful planters in a less-sheltered place. Plant up with bright bedding, or for a long-term display use a few house-leeks or sempervivums – their fleshy rosettes of leaves in shades of green and purple look great!

An old kitchen or bathroom sink can be put to good use, but don’t forget to pull the plug out before you add the compost or else you’ll end up with no drainage and the plants will quickly become waterlogged and die – but then again, if you leave the plug in place and add some sealant to ensure that it is firmly in place, you could always make a miniature water garden. For a serious show-stopper, I’ve even seen a loo cistern packed full of trailing plants including blue and white lobelia and trailing silvery foliage plants. The mass of blue, white and silver made a great waterfall of colour from an otherwise boring water closet. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more. Holiday homes for your friend! A new business has launched in the York area offering dog owners a home based alternative to kennels Run by Jane Bamford and her Cockerpoo Stanley, Wagging Tails give dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog Carer.

time they deserve. Both owners, their dogs and carers have a chance to meet before the holiday, which is reassuring to all parties. Jane is looking for potential Dog Carers who would welcome dogs into their homes. As well as companionship, all carers receive a small payment for looking after the dogs in their care. To find out more give Jane a call on 01904 738366 or 07415 490404.

All Wagging Tails Carers are experienced current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. Wagging Tails is also Trading Standards Approved as a member of the ‘Buy with Confidence’ scheme. A dog is a full member of the family and dog owners are able to go away knowing that they are dealing with people who will give them the home from home environment and dedicated care and

Roxy came to us when her previous owner could no longer take care of her, she arrived heavily pregnant and soon gave birth to 8 beautiful puppies. Roxy has been a fantastic mother and now she is ready to find herself the loving new home she deserves. Roxy loves to say hello to everyone she meets, she loves to sit on your knee and have a fuss and will happily stay there for hours. Roxy would ideally be the only pet in the home and can live with children of primary school age. Dave came to the centre as an unclaimed stray via our local dog warden. Unfortunately, he has not had a great start in life and is a

little nervous around people as a result, so he needs a loving home where he will feel safe and cherished. Dave loves to be around other dogs and gains in confidence when with them so we are looking for an adult only home where there is an existing confident dog.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month Ellie Kift (RVN fdSc). Station House Vets Last month was the BVNA’S Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM). The aim is to help create an awareness of the importance of the role of the Veterinary Nurse both in practice, and in the provision of responsible pet care. Veterinary Nursing is one of the most diverse jobs and there are definitely no two days the same. Becoming a Registered Veterinary nurse (RVN) is more intensive than people first think, and involves a minimum of two years training. There are two different routes to becoming a Veterinary Nurse, the apprenticeship route or the degree route. Both of these paths require regular theory and practical examinations which must be passed to achieve the qualification; plus whilst studying student vet nurses have to gain a minimum of 1,800 hours in a veterinary practice. After qualifying, a RVN must maintain their place on the VN Register by adhering to a strict code of professional conduct; this includes participating in a minimum of 15 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) per year. Many RVNs also undertake additional advanced qualifications in their chosen area of speciality.Beingon the register allows VNs to perform procedures known as “Schedule 3”; these include small lump removals, taking blood, putting cannulas into patients and so muchmore. Unfortunately, despite all this, the title of Registered Veterinary Nurse is still not a protected title, meaning any unqualified or untrained personnel can call themselves a Veterinary Nurse. A higher level of public awareness is essential in order to prevent someone with no formal training from monitoring your pet’s anaesthetics or performing surgery on your pooch! Back in 2014 a huge amount of people signed the petition to protect the VN title, and it achieved 37,000 signatures! Regretfully it did not reach the required 100,000 signatures necessary for the issue to be discussed in the House of Commons. Increased public awareness of the role of the VN will not only advance the movement to acquiring this protected title, but can also facilitate much needed public support.

As a RVN myself I am extremely proud of what we do, and strongly believe we are not ‘just’ veterinary Nurses. We are phlebotomists, radiographers, anaesthetists, surgical assistants, diagnostic assistants, lab technicians, recovery nurses, consultants, infection control nurses and a caring professional who always provides the very best care for your pet. All Registered Veterinary Nurses hold a RCVS badge in recognition of their training and commitment to the profession. Here at Station House Vets we are proud to be an RCVS training practice for Veterinary Nurses and you can be assured there will be a qualified and dedicated RVN caring for your pet through every stage of their visit to Station House Vets. Arthritis in dogs by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

Arthritis is also most common medical condition in dogs, in fact it’s estimated that one in five dogs suffer from this condition. • Dogs predisposed to developmental orthopaedic disorders such as hip or elbow dysplasia Dogs that are overweight are more likely to develop arthritis as the extra weight puts added pressure on their joints.

O

steoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that affects dog’s joints and it’s is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. Arthritis occurs when the protective layers that cushion joints (cartilage) begin to deteriorate, causing inflammation and pain. Because it is progressive, the effects of arthritis worsen with age.

The first thing to understand is that, with the right care, you can relieve your dog’s pain and help him return to a more active, happy life. However, treatment will likely be life long as unfortunately there is no cure for arthritis. If you are worried about your dog please contact your closest clinic to book an appointment.

The signs of Arthritis are predictable and shouldn’t be dismissed as just signs of old age. The condition can cause serious pain which many dogs try to hide, however, the following consistent signs are good clues that your dog may be suffering from arthritis: • • • • • •

Limping Stiffness after exercise Reluctance to exercise Difficulty rising, sitting or climbing stairs Changes in behaviour Loss of appetite

Arthritis is also most common medical condition in dogs, in fact it’s estimated that one in five dogs suffer from this condition. Although any dog, at any age can have arthritis, some dogs are at greater risk: • • • •

Dogs over the age of five years Inactive or overweight dogs Large or giant breeds Dogs who have suffered joint injuries

Merlin needs a home! You might not be able to see this little guy at first as he’s pretty nervous and likes to hide away a lot. Merlin needs an understanding new owner who can give him the time to find his feet at his own pace. He’d previously been living in a home with a lot of other cats so he’s just adjusting to having time to himself and not having to worry about competing with a multitude of other moggies for food and the best place for a snooze. He is however finding life at the Adoption Centre a little stressful therefore he would love to find his forever home as soon as possible so he can begin his happier future sooner rather than later. If you have a quiet home that needs a magic little cat like Merlin to make it complete, please get in touch with York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or york@ cats.org.uk

The Edstone Festival is back! Saturday 16th June This well-established, family friendly music festival has become a firm favourite in the area. Whatever the weather, there is a warm relaxed atmosphere with a wonderful range of music, plenty of delicious food and drink and lots of free entertainment for the kids. The music kicks off at midday and runs all the way through to midnight and beyond. Camping is available so no need to worry about the drive home! Acts this year include Irenie Rose all the way from the Highlands, ‘Say What’ and our headliners, ‘Holy Moly & the Crackers’, as well as many other brilliant acts. The festival was established to raise money for MS associated charities and all profits go to them. Tickets can be bought online from ‘Brown Paper Tickets’. Any remaining will be sold on the gate.
