elcome to the June edition.
Are you looking forward to another long summer of sport? We will be treated to football galore in Brazil, the usual tennis and cricket and of course the famous faces of cycling on our Yorkshire roads. Myself, I will be watching the Tour de France Grand Depart with interest, tennis and maybe even a bit of cricket (probably just the highlights if I’m honest and then only if there are any!). Football is not normally for me (I leave the room when Match of the Day comes on) but the World Cup could be different this time. For a nation that pins its hopes so much on sport, we can expect and dream! When my son was small I remember the World Cup being a valuable lesson in learning the flags of the world and national anthems – we had home-drawn flags everywhere! Whatever your sport, I hope you’ll accompany it with local food and drink and in our local pubs and bars who provide a great atmosphere even if you can’t get to the actual event itself. If you have passed our office this month, you’ll have noticed its smart new look, grey with pink stripes. Someone said it was ‘elephant ear’ coloured, which may not have been complimentary, but I rather like it! The window will be displaying posters for local events from this month, yet more publicity for those of you who have sent in event posters for the magazines. Our website has also undergone a makeover, courtesy of Gary our office neighbour at Computer FX, who has done a fabulous job of bringing it up to date. Here you will find everything that is in the magazine, including listings for local businesses, community groups and events. Well done to Sue May of Strensall, the winner of the April competition (answers on page 71). Until next month…

Blind Image specialises in conservatory blinds where getting the correct shading solution is essential to maintain a comfortable and usable room. Expert advice is on hand to ensure your blinds will be perfect. Samples of stock fabrics are available to take home or to a local carpet, decorating or interiors shop to check colour and shade suitability. The friendly team can also provide you with a free on-site measuring service, bringing a vast selection of fabrics for you to co-ordinate with your furnishings. There is then a free quotation for the total price of your blind including free fitting. Instead of employing shop-only staff, the showroom is manned by an experienced member of the manufacturing team or factory manager who has over 25 years of experience in manufacture and fitting of all types of blinds. This also means that costs can be kept to a minimum and prices are very competitive. The showroom carries the largest stock of roller blinds, vertical blinds and pleated conservatory blind fabric in the York area as well as the largest stock of blind hardware components. This allows the company to make blinds for the same day if required.
Tony says “We are also in a position to offer a repair service for a wide range of blinds (usually ones not made by us). We also re-cover roller blinds, supply replacement louvres for vertical blinds and re-string wooden venetian blinds, aluminium venetian blinds and pleated blinds.” If you require just one blind or a hundred blinds, Blind Image is there to help with a perfect finishing touch to your decor. Transform your kitchen without having to buy a new one
D
ream Doors in York has been established for 5 years and has completed hundreds of kitchen facelifts during that time. The business has recently been taken over by Robert and James from the previous owner Barry, who retired in March 2014. The business is located at 110 Fishergate in York where we have several kitchen displays and samples of all the doors and worktops along with appliances, sinks and taps. We provide a service across all the York postcodes and beyond and offer home appointments where we can discuss your requirements in the kitchen to be transformed. We can bring all of our door and worktop samples to you so that you can see them in your own kitchen. A brand new kitchen is often too expensive but, thanks to the Dream Doors service there is a real alternative. We have developed a niche service, understanding that many people choose a new kitchen because of minor faults or a dated look.
The base and wall units are invariably as solid as the day they were installed and an effective facelift can deliver outstanding results.
By replacing the doors and drawer fronts we can transform your old kitchen and save you time, money and hassle. There are hundreds of door style and colour combinations to choose from that will appeal to everyone’s taste – from contemporary to classical and town to country. All our doors and drawers are made to measure to fit your existing units and are manufactured in the UK using the best quality materials. All doors and drawers are available with matching end panels, cornice, lighting pelmets and plinth. Dream Doors also offers worktops, a vast range of appliances and sinks to achieve that new look kitchen. All our kitchens are installed by qualified and experienced local tradesmen to the highest standards. So if you are looking to replace your kitchen why not give us a call to arrange an appointment on 01904 622234.

said: “This is a fantastic project which builds on our commitment to further improve our parks and open spaces by supporting pollinators with a greater diversity of wildflowers. York’s Buzzing is worth backing.” Speaking on behalf of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Conservation Officer Sara Robin, said “We are thrilled to be part of this wonderful project that will see beautiful wild flower meadows planted across the city of York.” These buzzing meadows will be a beautiful asset to the city for everyone to use and enjoy. Buglife and its partners want as many people in York as possible to get involved in supporting and creating them. If you live in York and would like to get involved please email info@buglife.org.uk to register your interest.

Buglife has so far raised £20,000 to get the project off the ground but also more is needed from the people of York and local businesses to complete the transformation.
create buzz in York
A
new project, York’s Buzzing, launched this week by environmental charity Buglife, in partnership with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, City of York Council, and York Friends of the Earth will transform an area 50 times the size of York Minster’s nave, into vibrant meadows buzzing with wildlife and rich with colourful wildflowers that both people and pollinators can enjoy. Since the 1940’s large-scale changes in land use have resulted in a 97% loss of wildflowerrich meadows across the UK. This exciting York-wide project

will help to reverse the loss of this precious habitat which has contributed to decline in over two thirds of UK pollinators, including many species of butterfly, moth, hoverfly and bumblebee. York’s Buzzing will, restore 7.4 hectares of wildflower meadows at 8 sites across the city, including the Bar Walls, parts of West Bank Park and Monk Stray and around the Millennium Bridge. As well as bringing a Buzz to the city the project will provide more vital homes and habitat for wildlife. Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism,
Vicky Kindemba, Conservation Delivery Manager for Buglife, who is leading the project, said “This is a great project for the City of York and we hope that local residents, visitors and businesses will engage with it and also help with our fundraising.” If you would like to support York’s Buzzing you can do so by texting “Buzz14” and then the amount you’d like to give in pounds eg “Buzz14£3” or “Buzz14£5” or donate by going to our website www.buglife.org.uk/help-us-getyork-buzzing. If you have a York-based business and would like to become a project sponsor or supporter then call Buglife on 01733 201210.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

DYING TOO SOON OR LIVING TOO LONG?
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
Of course the nonsense of all this is that “average life expectancy” has nothing to do with you. You’re not average. According to the World Health Organisation the average life expectancy for women in the UK is 82.5 years. My Grandma turned 100 last August. Just as well she didn’t rely on Steve’s cockeyed calculations otherwise she’d have spent the last 18 years living on fresh air. Another 54,000 women aged 60 today are expected to see their 100th birthday. And these figures are rising all the time due to a combination of medical interventions and healthier lifestyles.
O
ne of our jobs is to make sure your money lasts as long as you do. And one of the challenges is that we don’t know how long that is. What we do know is that people are living longer. 1 in 3 babies born today are expected to live past their 100th birthday. It appears that soon we’ll no longer have to worry about this planning conundrum. Pensions Minister Steve Webb has announced the Government intention to give pensioners an estimate of their date of death to help them manage their finances. Great. That’s alright then. You’ll be able to work out exactly how much you’ll need and put a plan in place to make sure your money lasts exactly as long as you do. Steve says they’re going to use postcodes, lifestyle choices and hereditary factors to calculate your date of death. That’s something to look forward to then. Nothing worse than not knowing?
With interest rates at record lows, many pensioners are having to delve into their savings to make ends meet – and that can lead to a very slippery slope. Others make the mistake of hanging on to too much of their money for too long, and risk losing a great big chunk of it to Inheritance Tax or paying for care. Fortunately, there are simple ways to “have your cake and eat it”, so to speak. We’ve helped thousands of clients make sure their money lasts as long as they do, and anything left over ends up with their family and not the Government. The steps you need to take are actually very straight forward. If you’d like a copy of my free no nonsense guide showing you how we do that, just call 0330 100 1744, email Helen@pen-life.co.uk, visit www.straight-talking-iht.co.uk or complete the coupon below

CYCLING
As Summer approaches and the weather improves many of us begin to use our cycles more often. The use of cycles in York is widespread amongst both adults and children and is well publicised particularly this year with The Grand Depart of the Tour de France in the area. It would seem to be a sensible time to pass some basic safety advice for cyclists and to mention a couple of the more common offences that cyclists commit. Children do enjoy cycling and it does provide them with good exercise and a sense of freedom. Parents should be sensible when deciding where and when to let their children use their cycles however. Even a quiet road can be potentially dangerous if the cyclist is not confident. If your child is not yet confident on their cycle York has many cycle paths in all parts of the city that are an ideal area for them to practice and to boost their confidence. For children and adults alike who are more confident on their cycles we would recommend that you use the cycle paths where they are available but you can of course use the roads in the city. However, when using the road as a cyclist you should always remember that you must ride according to the rules of the road, just as any motorist has to. You must obey all traffic lights and road signs. This will keep you and other road users safe. When you are going to make a turn or change direction on your cycle check behind you before moving and signal clearly so that other road users are aware of your intentions. This may seem like common sense, as when driving a car you always do this, but it is equally important when riding a bike. Even experienced cyclists will have accidents from time to time and fall off. A cycle helmet can and does prevent many injuries for cyclists. A helmet is not expensive and can save your life. It could be compared to wearing your seatbelt in a car.
26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
If like many people you have not used your bike since last summer and it has been in the garage or shed all winter it will need to be checked before use. If you are not confident in checking the brakes, gears and other working parts of your cycle there are a number of cycle shops in York that will do these checks for you. During the hours of darkness you need to have working lights on the front and rear of your cycle. Lights are again inexpensive, and are certainly cheaper than paying the ticket that a Police officer could issue you with for not having them! The other common offence dealt with by officers is for cycling on the footpath. The footpath is for pedestrians and not cycles. That being said if a child is using the footpath or it is clearly safer for the cyclist to use the path than the road you will not be issued a ticket. It is a matter of common sense, if the footpath is busy with pedestrians then do not use it as a cycle path. Enjoy the summer and any cycling that you may do but remember to be seen and enjoy it safely. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

ELLA...
ON WHAT I SHOULD HAVE LEARNT IN SCHOOL As the final days of my 14year stint in the education system loom ever closer, thoughts turn to moving out, going to university and generally being a self-sufficient, wellorganised and responsible adult. Oh, God. I may well have received a good education (that might be a little pre-emptive to say before exam results in August!), but academic education really doesn’t constitute real preparation. Prepared is something that I am not, and I’ve started to wonder if this could have been remedied by altering the secondary school curriculum somewhat: I doubt Pythagoras’s theorem will be of much use to me out there in the “real world” (where, you know, we could just measure the triangle’s third side?) How to calculate taxes, along with budgeting and working out loans and interest rates et cetera would be much more applicable. Most people in the working world don’t communicate information with essays, so a good few lessons on how to deliver decent presentations wouldn’t go amiss. (In fact, I know some teachers that could benefit from such lessons) The type of D&T that I’ll be doing from now on is not going to be making an acrylic pen-holder. Rather, we should have had classes to practise putting together flat-pack furniture, so we can learn to tell the difference between ‘screw G’ and ‘bolt K’ (and probably learn a bit of Swedish at the same time). Certainly how to change a fuse is something that should be covered. Some people learnt cooking in school, but the fancy recipes of celebrity chefs probably won’t be that practical for student life. Knowing how to make something good out of leftovers and cheap food is a priceless skill to leave home with. As well as, you know, not burning down your kitchen. Along with this is what my Mum likes to call “fridge management” – not only do groceries not actually buy themselves, you also have to think about all the meals you intend to make when you go out and get them. From the shop. Yourself. I could also do to know already what all those buttons on the washing machine do, how to use a plunger, and that the “check engine” light in a car doesn’t mean “check that the engine’s still there”. and freshly ground black pepper and brush all over with sunflower oil. Cook under a medium preheated grill for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is just cooked through.
Meanwhile, boil the sweet potatoes in a large 2. pan of lightly salted boiling water for 10-15
minutes, or until tender. Drain well, then mash with the butter and crème fraiche until smooth. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
INGREDIENTS • 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into cubes • 2 small red onions, peeled and cut into thin wedges • 2 tsp sunflower oil • 1 kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 25g butter • 2 tbsp crème fraiche • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • 1 tbsp runny honey • 2 tsp red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

until syrupy. Brush half the glaze all over the chicken kebabs and grill for a further 1-2 minutes.
Serve the kebabs on the sweet potato mash 4. with the rest of the hot glaze drizzled over. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander.
For an extra fiery flavour add some finely 5. chopped fresh red chilli pepper to the glaze.

The room is a ‘pop-up’ facility and will be set up with the appropriate equipment for each session in the Living & Learning Zone at the Wilberforce headquarters, Wilberforce House. The facility has been created following requests from a variety of support organisations in York and a consultation with some of them including the Disabilities Trust, Mencap, the Rowntree Foundation, UBU, United Reform, and the Wilf Ward Family Trust. The sensory facility has been funded by Wilberforce itself, Sainsbury’s in York and the York City Council. COOKING MOTORING
Sébastien Loeb Interview
By James Baggott
it. I’d had the GT Turbo for about a year before I drove it into a pole. I drove it too hard. I bought another one with a broken engine – there were lots of those around – and I swapped it over.
He’s the most successful driver in the World Rally Championship’s history, with an incredible nine titles to his name. He holds the record for fastest ascent of the buttockclenching Pikes Peak hill climb – and if you haven’t seen the video, go do it now. But most of all he’s an all-round nice guy and a massive car nut. Sébastien Loeb is a legend among rally car fans and a hero to petrol heads. After years of dominating the world’s rally stages with Citroen, the 40-year-old is now starting at the bottom rung of the ladder once more and taking on a new challenge – competing in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with Citroen. Here, in an exclusive interview, Loeb talks crashing his first car, gives his tips for driving on the limit, tries to sell us his Lamborghini Aventador and says he simply doesn’t care how he does in WTCC as long as it’s not finishing last. My first car was a Renault 5 GT Turbo. My friends all drove BMWs, Golf GTIs and Peugeot 205 GTIs at the time I was growing up. We all loved cars. I picked the Renault because I wanted a fast small car. My grandmother helped me buy it second-hand. It didn’t last too long – I crashed 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
I eventually part exchanged it for a Fiesta RS Turbo. This was no good in comparison as it had too much power going through the front wheels. It under-steered all over the place. I soon got rid of that and moved on to a Peugeot 205 Rallye, after that two 205 GTIs, then I swapped into a Saxo VTS. I have to say the Saxo was my favourite. I used it to recce rallies in it before I competed in them. I modified it with a short gearbox, big brakes, better suspension, a roll cage and sports seats. It was a road car, but very quick and great fun to drive. These days I don’t really have much of a car collection. I have my Citroen C4 WRC car that was given to me as a present. I will keep that forever – it’s very special. I like to change my other cars regularly though. I have a Citroen DS5, a Lamborghini Aventador and a Porsche 911 Turbo. I’m changing the latter for a Cayenne and am selling the Aventador – do you want to buy it? I used to drive everywhere on the limit. I realised I had a talent behind the wheel in my Renault 5 when I was quicker than all my friends. I’ve always liked to drive through corners fast and picked up the skill of sliding when my dad would take me to a field in his old saloon and he’d let me handbrake turn it. I always enjoyed those times.
My best piece of advice to upcoming rally drivers is try and get noticed. I started off in a competition in France that had 15,000 entrants. I won the regionals and then everyone was pitched against each other in a national final. I won, but the judge chose the second placed guy over me. So I tried again the following year and won it again. I then had a call from the guy who is now my team manager who spotted my perseverance. So my advice is: Keep trying. In rally you need good notes. You need to be able to anticipate what’s coming up next and you can only do that with good pace notes. You have to focus on what you’re doing at that moment, maybe that’s adjusting brake pressure, but also think about what’s around the next bend. Winning the World Rally Championship in front of my friends and family was a career highlight. Of course my first World Championship was very special – it finally felt like I’d achieved something – but when I won the final stage, in my home town, in front of my friends and family, well, that was something else. It was a very proud moment. I don’t want to be in the queue this year. World Touring Cars are very different and I’m starting from zero again and learning how to improve. Racing is different to rallying: You’ve got other cars on the track at the same time for a start and you need to be perfect everywhere, with every braking point and every corner. These are all new things to be, but I will get the rhythm. I want a good position, but I prefer finishing first.

GARDENING
PLOTTING A VEGETABLE GARDEN
by Pippa Greenwood
So you have a small garden – maybe no more than a paved back yard or a balcony. That means you can’t really grow much for kitchen, right? Wrong! Start now and you can feast on delicious home-grown salads all summer long. The truth is that producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And the good news is that salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm >>

YORK • JUNE 2014 • ISSUE 102 lettuce, or even a few herbs? If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot. Sweet peppers also do well in pots, but again you need as warm and sheltered a spot as possible. Fresh herbs will not only transform your cooking but can make a salad something very special too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind but still get enough sun – although sunshine is less critical to salad crops than it is to fruit. You can make your salad pot using crops raised from seed and sown directly into the compost – root crops such as carrots don’t much like being transplanted, and so are perfect for direct sowing. If you’re growing beetroot for its sweet juicy root,
it too tends to perform better if direct-sown. Just make sure that the compost is kept moist at all times but not actually wet: as long as the container has plenty of drainage holes in it you shouldn’t have any problems with over-watering, even if there’s a downpour or two. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The advantage of this is that the containers out in the garden will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. A BETTER LIFE ALL CHANGE by Derek Thompson Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com
T
he arrival of each new season is a constant reminder that change is the only constant. Well, that and the increasing cost of birdseed. For enthusiastic eco-amateurs like me, the garden is a living, breathing thing - plants need to be replaced, borders occasionally reclaimed from the wilderness and, sometimes when we least expect it, losses faced. Having said farewell to three trees in the past (a withered willow that seemed to subsist solely as a home for honey fungus, a neglected ash that our predecessors left pushing against a neighbour’s garage for years, and a lawson’s cypress whose trunk had begun to split in two), I did not relish the loss of a fourth. Even Anne reminding me that it was a leylandii after all, growing so close to the house that it tapped on the roof in strong winds, failed to reassure me. But gardening is sometimes about doing what is necessary and not just what looks pretty. The tree feller (our third, ironically) was given three simple instructions: 1. Avoid the phone line to the right and the electricity cable to the left. 2. Reduce the tree to log-sized pieces or slices that I can hatchet up once they’ve seasoned. 3. Don’t drop any branches on our neighbours’ garage roofs. In any other circumstances, two out of three would have been a reasonable result. The damage wasn’t extensive, limited to just a couple of corrugated plastic panels. I suppose it was an opportunity to meet our new neighbour, and for her to meet her new open-air garage roof. Thankfully, she took it in good spirits and our lumberjack extraordinaire took responsibility for the restoration. We plan to drill holes in the leylandii stump and insert mushroom plugs to see if we can grow them (it’s amazing what you can find on the Internet).

Other parts of the garden have also changed. The mini meadow experiment has been extended, but rather than use seed-impregnated paper sheets again, we opted for yellow rattle to control the grass last year, scattering collected wild seeds in the spaces once the rattle had died back. That was augmented with some heritage seeds, including cowslip, lady’s bedstraw, wild carrot and musk mallow. And yes, I did read that off the packet. Not that we’re solely traditionalists. Last year’s nursery bought Himalayan blue poppies were a great success (and the envy of our neighbours), but we took the collected seeds out of the freezer quite late this year. They like partial shade and dislike the heat. I suppose the clue is in the name! Mint is once more flavour of the month, with the addition of apple mint to the set. This is mainly because we visited a Lebanese restaurant that uses mint in its wonderful pressed juices, which I hope to emulate. Meanwhile, indoors, Anne made an executive decision (i.e. while I was out at work) and took down the curtains. These have now been converted into a rather fetching pair of Roman blinds and the remaining material left over was used to reupholster the ottoman. Ever the competitive one I rose to the challenge, finding someone who could use the carrier bags of old bubble wrap that I’ve been storing in the attic for longer than I care to admit. Now, I just need someone who’s desperate for 25 used Jiffy bags! Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd June

WE ARE RECRUITING
Y
ork Cats Protection are seeking to recruit a new green fingered volunteer to help maintain their grounds.
Using your skills and passion for ‘all things green’ will help make our Adoption Centre welcoming, not only to the general public but also to wildlife, greatly enriching the lives of our cats whilst in our care. Looking out onto gardens, plants and pots our cats can spend their days watching bees, birds and butterflies whilst waiting for their new home. Not only will you get a lot of personal satisfaction and enjoyment from your volunteering role, you will also have the opportunity to make a real difference to the cats and kittens in our Centre. It’s also a great chance to meet new people and work as part of a dedicated team. Tea and biccies provided! The role involves cutting hedges, weeding, planting, preparing pots and soil and generally managing and maintaining our green spaces throughout the year. Knowledge and confidence in gardening would be
advantageous for this role, but more importantly an enthusiastic and positive approach is desirable. This is an extremely flexible role, usually requiring a few hours each week, depending on the seasons of course! This role can be shared by several volunteers. If you are interested please contact James Hodgkison, the Adoption Centre Manager on the number below. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Visit www.york.cats.org.uk to see the other cats in our care. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 49

WHAT IS NEUTERING?
Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
N
eutering is a simple operation that prevents males and females from reproducing by the removal of their reproducing organs; in females it is called spaying and males it is called castrating. Both are routine procedures carried out under general anaesthetic and animals usually recover within 10 days.
FEMALE CATS
While she is in season she will be restless and vocal, and can become aggressive. She may spend long periods, even days, away from home in the search for a mate. Aside from preventing unwanted kittens, neutering your female cat at an early age reduces the risks of her developing MAMMARY CANCER in the future.
MALE CATS
Once mature the adult male will also begin to spend long periods away from home. The ‘calling’ female will have attracted many other potential mates and fighting will inevitably follow, leading to painful physical injuries and abscesses which in turn puts them at risk of contracting serious diseases such as FELINE LEUKAEMIA VIRUS and FELINE AIDS (FIV). NEUTERING WILL REDUCE THESE RISKS
MALE DOGS
Neutering will help prevent a number of undesirable behavioural traits. Some behavioural problems are more common in the entire male, and these often lead to territorial and dominance issues. Neutering your dog is also a preventative measure for a number of medical disorders such as TESTICULAR TUMOURS, PROSTATIC DISEASE, HERNIAS and RETAINED TESTICLES.
FEMALE DOGS
Neutering will prevent seasons, false pregnancies, unwanted puppies and all the disruption that goes with these. False pregnancies are a natural phenomenon when your bitch will show signs of pregnancy, nursing and lactation and yet has no puppies. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Neutering also helps prevent and reduce the risk of a number of medical problems. As your bitch ages, many uterine abnormalities can develop. Older bitches are prone to PYOMETRA, an accumulation of pus in the uterus, which often needs emergency veterinary surgery. This normally occurs 4-6 weeks after being in season and can be fatal. Early neutering reduces the risk of MAMMARY TUMOURS. Many bitches left entire will develop mammary tumours by the time they are eight.
MALE RABBITS
Male rabbits are usually bolder than females. They are responsive and enjoyable pets, but most are territorial and frequently spray urine, and aggression is a common problem. Neutered males are much happier and more relaxed. They can enjoy life without constantly looking for a mate and are much less aggressive. If carefully introduced, they can live with a spayed female or even another neutered male. Neutered males will stop spraying urine even if the operation is performed later in life.
FEMALE RABBITS
Having female rabbits spayed is equally important. Most female Rabbits become territorial and aggressive from sexual maturity (4-6months). They often have repeated false pregnancies, and may growl at, bite and scratch their owners as well as other rabbits. Keeping two females together (even if they are sisters) tends to make things worse. Spaying reduces (sometimes eliminates) all these behavioural problems. Spayed females are likely to live longer lives than their unspayed sisters. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd June

BEAUTY
Beach Ready Beauty
By Helen Taylor
evenly. Don’t forget you are likely to need help to do your back.
HEAVENLY HAIR
Y
ou’ve been toning up and getting into shape for months, ready to flaunt your bikini body on the beach. So, now your holiday is just around the corner, it’s time plan your holiday beauty routine.
FAKE IT FIRST
Winter pale skin does not look great in a bikini, so you’ll need to fake the golden glow. Head to the beauty salon (for best results) or to the shops (if on a budget) and prepare your skin. Thorough exfoliation is key and it’s best done the night before. Concentrate on those areas prone to dryness like knees, ankles and elbows. Allow at least 24 hours between waxing and tanning. If you tan too soon after waxing your pores and hair follicles will still be open and you may find that the product builds up leaving you with dark dots. Be really generous with your moisturiser and put plenty on your knees, elbows and feet. If you are going for the DIY option, don a pair of latex gloves, squeeze a dollop of fake tan on to your hand and then work quickly and methodically, covering every inch of your skin 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
If your hair is a bit dry, or has split-ends, a couple of weeks in the sun and in sea-water or chlorinated pools will make the matter far worse. Book a trim before you head off. At the poolside, slather a leave-in conditioner onto your hair. This will help to protect against sun damage and will leave your locks looking thoroughly shiny, as the heat makes the product even more effective. Always rinse your tresses with fresh water after swimming in the sea or pool. Both salt and chlorine will really dry your hair out.
your lips too. Wear a large hat on the beach. Not only will you look chic, you’ll also be protecting the delicate skin on your face too. Always apply after-sun lotion. A long day on the beach calls for plenty of after-sun when you get back to the hotel.
MINIMAL MAKE-UP
Keep make-up light in the day by swapping a full-coverage foundation with a tinted moisturiser. Cover imperfections with a little concealer. Wear one coat of quality waterproof mascara on your top lashes for definition. Better still, arrange a trip to your beauty salon for an eyelash and eyebrow tint before you jet off.
If your hair is long enough keep it pinned up during the day and preferably covered up too. Not only will this protect your hair, put it will also protect your head which can easily burn along a parting line.
A peachy coloured blush will look fabulous with bronzed skin and is much better than pink hues which only serve to add more redness to already flushed cheeks.
SUMPTUOUS SKIN
Drink plenty of water each day, more if you’re out in the hot sun for long periods of time. Of course you are on holiday so if you do indulge in cocktails and beers, try to alternate each alcoholic drink with water.
The three important steps which you should follow at home are cleanse, tone and moisturise, and it’s even more important on holiday. Regularly apply and re-apply sunscreen. Ensuring that your entire body is protected against damaging UV rays is a must. Use a high factor, and remember to re-apply after swimming. And use a nourishing balm for

Do you ever look in the mirror and wish you had fewer lines and wrinkles. Do you wish your complexion was more luminous and even?
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
Here at Howardian Dental Practice Christine Parker, a qualified dental surgeon, has undergone the necessary training and has several years’ experience, in wrinkle reduction, dermal fillers and chemical peels. These can be used together or as individual treatments to subtly enhance your features. As an introductory treatment the facial peels are a real skin booster encouraging increased cell turnover and act at a deeper level than regular facials. We call these our ‘Red Carpet Ready’ peels as they not only make your skin feel softer, they also allow the skin to develop a real glow which is maximised after 3-4 days. They are perfect to be used a week or so before that special event. A course of 6, over 6 months, gives really lasting results. We also provide treatment for the reduction of active wrinkles such as laughter lines around the eyes and forehead creasing. These can be substantially reduced, and in many cases erased completely, for between 3 and 6 months.

2014 AT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR BIRDS OF PREY, DUNCOMBE PARK, HELMSLEY
Great things are happening at the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Duncombe Park in Helmsley! Although we only opened for the first time in 2013, we have just had a bumper Easter. The weather certainly helped, but word is out about us now too. We are open 7 days a week and during our 3 daily flying demonstrations. The Centre features the largest collection of birds of prey in the north of England and houses birds from the tiny Burrowing Owls right up to the truly gigantic Steller’s Sea Eagles. Lora, one of our Lanner Falcons performed a 600ft vertical stoop over the audience the other day – spine-tingling stuff. The Griffon Vultures are raising their young chick and the Grey Buzzard Eagles’ eggs have just hatched. New for 2014 are Photography Days. The noted wildlife photographer, Linda Wright is coming to host the days. Participants will get ample opportunity to take both 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Raptor Fair is being held within the centre’s grounds on 14 and 15th June 2014. We have a whole host of trade stands coming to exhibit all manner of bird of prey related goods. In addition a number of falconry clubs, both local and national, are also coming to exhibit. Both the Hawk and Owl Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will be promoting their valuable conservation work. Conceived to appeal to anyone with an interest in these wonderful birds, the Fair will feature flying demonstrations by our own staff and by other falconers. Nigel King is coming from Kent to fly some of his birds, and Simon Jewitt from Yorkshire Gundogs will be giving
There is a programme of seminars and workshops within our Discovery Centre. Amongst others these will feature Battleflatts Vets talking about veterinary care of raptors and Bob Dalton will doubtless be showing us some of his amazing photos of exotic raptors from his extensive travels. Full access to the International Centre for Birds of Prey is included in the ticket price for the Fair. The Fair opens at 9am on 14th June. No need to book, just turn up on the day. There is stacks of free parking, and if you want to make a weekend of things there is even a camping area (please pre-book for this). The Leaning Tower of Pisa north side to increase the counterweight, before lead could be added.
O
n 5th January 1172, a widow named Berta di Bernardo passed away in Pisa, a prosperous city bristling with thousands of impressive towers. Yet, the cathedral didn’t have one of its own so the pious Berta left 60 ‘soldi’ in her Will to put things right. The foundations were laid 18 months later. Problems arose almost straightaway. The marshy ground struggled to accommodate the heavy marble blocks and for the next two centuries, it was all stop and start for the free-standing tower. Completed at last in the 1370s, it is the only monument in the cathedral ground which does not bear a signature. The tower kept on leaning throughout the ages, though little was done until the belfry of St Mark’s in Venice collapsed in 1902. The time had come to keep a close eye on Pisa and after long years of deliberations, it was decided that the tilt would
58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
be checked every year in June on the same day with the same instrument. All sorts of plans were hatched, injecting 90 tons of liquid cement, which almost led to disaster, lifting the tower to strengthen the foundations, which never came to fruition, but eventually in 1990, the ‘Iron Lady’ was forced to close her door. A new commission set to work, binding the weakest point with concealed steel cables, then piling tons of lead on the north side while Alpine climbers installed a new monitoring system. For fear of vibration damage, the bells fell silent for seven years. In 1995, ‘Black September’ struck in the middle of the night as, following the injection of liquid nitrogen to secure anchors, a successful technique used in the London underground, the tower suddenly tilted at an alarming rate, causing great anxiety as diggers and cranes were frantically moved to the
The battle was finally won in 2001 with tons of earth painstakingly removed under the tower, a few hundred grams at a time, to lower the side opposite the overhang. After 12 years and millions of liras, the leaning tower re-emerged, safe and beautifully pristine, despite its somewhat diminished iconic slant. Today, the visitors are back, just 30 at a time, climbing the 293 marble steps spiralling inside, slippery and smooth, hollowed out in the centre by millions of footprints. The incline takes you by surprise before you even step through the door and is most apparent on the lower floors as you lean one way then the other, but the view from the top is superb, the entire piazza at your feet, the cathedral and baptistry gleaming on extensive lawns, the red roofs of Pisa, the Tuscan hills and the blue waters of the Mediterranean glistening in the distance. But whether you climb up or stay on the ground, the tower remains a unique focal point in this superb World Heritage site. Rising to a lofty 56 meters, it looks like a giant wedding cake, eight creamy tiers decorated with a total of 207 delicate columns. Yet, it is an amazingly resilient building with over 32,000 marble blocks encircling a hollow cylindrical centre. Monitoring continues on a daily basis but experts are confident now that the tower is safe for at least 200 years. The pious lady of Pisa would be pleased.

HOW DADDY IS DOING With Fathers’ Day just around the corner we thought we’d put together a collection of books about dads and their offspring. Whether they’re doting or disastrous, destructive or departed, this is a day for celebrating the role of these most influential of men.
The Road Cormac McCarthy
Although this book is set in a post-apocalyptic world and is, quite frankly, a bit terrifying, it’s a fantastic tale of a man who’ll do anything to protect his boy. Together they walk through the battered remnants of America, heading to the coast and hoping for salvation, with only each other to rely on. The landscape is brutal, chilling and ash-ridden and father and son must find food and shelter where they can, away from the dangers that lie in wait. Often described as a masterpiece, Cormac McCarthy’s novel is haunting and yet reassuring that the bond between parent and child can withstand anything.
To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee
Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller
There’s no way that Willy Loman is winning any Father of the Year prizes anytime soon and yet his son Happy is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. His other son, Biff has more of the measure of the man having once caught his father in a compromising situation. Whatever the dropout Biff and the hapless Happy decide to do with their lives, Loman himself is all washed up as a salesman and facing a precipice. Arthur Miller’s play is set using a series of flashbacks as we watch this family and their own American Dream vaporise before our very eyes. Loman commits one final act of desperation for his sons, and the reader is left to decide whether or not he was heroic in the end.
Show me the person who wouldn’t want Atticus Finch as their father-figure. Atticus is an attorney and is often hailed as being the personification of all that is moral and just. He’s adored by his two children, Scout and Jem who try to make sense of the happenings in the sleepy southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus must face the disapproving eyes of the town’s residents as he defends Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Scout and her brother Jem aren’t allowed into the courtroom but they sneak in and hide out on the ‘coloured balcony’ to watch their father in action, and the trial that will change Maycomb forever.
And When Did You Last See Your Father? Blake Morrison
Danny the Champion of the World
A bit of light relief comes in the form of Jeffrey Brown’s ponderings over Darth Vader’s propensity for fatherhood. What if Vader uttering the immortal words, “Luke, I am your father” opened the floodgates for some father-son bonding and making up for lost time across the galaxies. What if he was completely misinterpreted and it was a just a stern telling off from daddy? Brown’s comic illustrations reveal life as it could have been if he and Luke had been able to build a relationship and end up as allies rather than enemies, revealing what a handson dad Lord Vader could really have been.
Roald Dahl ‘The most marvellous and exciting father a boy ever had’- you can’t do much better than that accolade. Nine year old Danny idolises his father and adores hearing his fantastic stories and tales of daring-do. Danny’s seemingly simple existence is his own personal bliss: growing up in a traveller’s caravan and tinkering with cars in his spare time. Then his dad comes up with a master plan in the form of a pheasant-snatching adventure and Danny’s world becomes that much more exciting. Roald Dahl’s story of a boy and his love and admiration for his dad is so heart-warming, you’ll want to start finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and realise that you too, can be the champion of the world. 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
In his memoirs, the author recounts his relationship with his own father, throughout his dad’s life and after his death. It raises questions as to whether or not we ever see our parents as adults in their own right, or simply as our parents. How do we deal with family secrets and is it destructive to reveal them? Do we ever really get to know our parents and how they view the world? It might be time to put the kettle on, call the folks and see if there are any skeletons in the closet.
Darth Vader and Son Jeffrey Brown

What is... A VirtuAl AssistAnt? By Jan Osborne, My Local PA www.mylocalpa.co.uk A Virtual Assistant is sometimes referred to as a VA, but in a nutshell is actually a freelance administrator who provides business support to busy business owners on a self-employed basis. It is virtual because sometimes, you don’t ever get to meet your business assistant personally as with today’s technical world, your VA could live in any part of the country or even in another part of the world! A VA can do most administrative and secretarial work, organising meetings, events and functions. They can return your calls, keep in touch with your top clients, answer emails, type up reports, print and post them on your behalf, in fact, the only thing they can’t do is make you a coffee! (Unless of course they are physically in your office) Most VAs work from a home based office using their own equipment, professional knowledge and experience. Work assignments can be sent by email, phone, Skype, fax, online calendars or sharing your webmail account. A good investment is a digital recorder where you can record, or dictate, your instructions, reports or notes, download onto your computer and send by email – great! There is a recording facility on most iphone or smart phones. Have a go, practice by making a recording and sending it by email to yourself. Most VAs have their own transcription software in order to be able to download the file and play it through their computer and type up your dictation. Your personal VA can also lend “size” to your business, could impress your (potential) clients and give you back precious time to focus on your own business. There is one simple invoice to pay and no payroll to worry about. Think about how much time you could save yourself! Contact me to see how I can help. 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

DO YOU NEED A WEBSITE BUILDING?
What Is A Business Coach? A business coach is just like a sporting coach. A sporting coach pushes an athlete to achieve optimum performance, provides support when they are exhausted and teaches the athlete to execute plays that their competition does not anticipate. A sporting coach will make you run more laps than you feel like. A sporting coach will tell it like it is. And a sporting coach will listen.
07885 521486 INFO@NUMBERTWENTYTHREE.CO.UK WWW.NUMBERTWENTYTHREE.CO.UK
The role of the business coach is to coach business owners to improve their business through guidance, support and encouragement. They help the owners of small and medium sized businesses with their sales, marketing, management, team building and so much more. Just like a sporting coach, your business coach will make you focus on the game. The owners of small to medium sized businesses find it hard enough to keep up the pace with all of the changes and innovations going on in today’s modern world, let alone to find the time to devote to sales, marketing, systems, planning and team management, and then to run their businesses as well!

THE LIFE LIST PROVERBS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Technology moves with the times, but some things never seem to change. Take the perennial wisdom you learned at school, or from your parents, that you never really questioned. For example, why would a cat look at a queen? Maybe it’s time that those half-forgotten nuggets, rarely considered outside a cryptic crossword, had a proverbial reboot. See how many you still recognise here - and how many you agree with now! • A WiFi for a WiFi, and a Bluetooth for a Bluetooth • A fool and his credit card details are soon parted • Let sleeping blogs lie • Brevity is the soul of Twitter
• He who laughs last has only just seen the amusing kitten clip on Youtube • What goes up must come downloadable • An app a day keeps the boredom away • Do judge an ebook by its cover - along with its spelling and punctuation • Beauty is only Photoshop deep • Early to bed, early to rise - the broadband must be on the blink again. • Many fans make light work of promoting your online event • Least said soonest trended • A little knowledge is a conspiracy website in the making • Talk is cheap, especially if you’re doing it on Skype • Fortune favourites the brave I hope that you Like this list and that it piqued your Pinterest. Hopefully I haven’t made a Hashtag of it, or fallen flat on my Facebook. I think this new terminology is as addictive as the technology it describes! © Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com
