elcome to the June edition. June has to be my favourite time of the year. Gardens are lush green and the weather is finally (hopefully!) warming up. This year June has the added bonus of an extra day off, with large numbers of celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee to get involved in. I hope you manage to get along to your local party. I wouldn’t really call myself a royalist, but even I can see that 60 years on the throne is something to be celebrated. I shall be dragging my troop along to our village celebrations come rain or shine! June also brings strawberries and cream and, best of all, tennis. I don’t play much sport – when I say not much – I mean none whatsoever! But Wimbledon fortnight always brings on a sense of nostalgia of games past and a need to find a tennis court. In my head I still play like I did in my 20s – serving overhead, winning rallies with a cross-court top spin forehand and chasing down every shot. In reality, I’m exhausted after a few shots, bored of chasing our 2 tennis balls into the surrounding countryside and in serving underarm looking hopeless; but at least the games get started! It was 2-year since we entered the local village

tennis tournament, and how we were shamed! Thank goodness there’s tennis to watch on the TV instead! The business editorials in the magazine give local businesses a real opportunity to tell you who they are and how they can help you and finding out all about them is one of my favourite monthly jobs. Please have a read through and remember to tell them that you read about them in the Handy Mag if you use their services. The competition winner in the April edition was Mrs P Goudy from Huntington. Well done! I have had a request for the answers to be published for anyone that couldn’t find all the Easter bunnies! They are on page 61. Until next time...

BGT Plumbing has one goal at the heart of everything they do – making their customers as happy as possible.
T
om Bradley and his two-man team of highly experienced gas fitters currently provide plumbing and heating services, repairs and installations to homes in York and the surrounding areas. They also provide services to rental homes and businesses in the Leeds area, on behalf of several letting agencies. Their work covers the full range of boiler and central heating installations, repairs and replacements, new bathrooms and general plumbing repairs.
Quality, value and reliability Getting a bathroom right requires finding the the best possible quality suite and fixtures for the customers’ budget, and Tom literally goes the extra mile in making sure this happens. For example, to ensure his customers get that bit more for their money, he puts in extra time and effort to source his goods directly from the suppliers’ supplier. Working closely with the customer, BGT Plumbing can help you decide on the very best options for you and your home. If you’re limited by the space and layout of your bathroom, or the budget available, Tom can work within those limitations. 6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
He’ll give a free quote at home, bringing along a full set of catalogues and tile samples, plus a stock of fresh ideas to help you make the best of what you have. Tom added: “It’s quite rare that a customer decides what we’re offering isn’t right for them, because we specialise in accommodating their needs, rather than encouraging them to do something that isn’t their best option. “Our business thrives on delivering exactly what the customer specified, on time, every time. All we really want is for the customer to be absolutely over the moon.”
Customers come first There’s no hard sell or false promises, and one thing BGT Pluming promises to never, ever do is use or even recommend a product that doesn’t represent excellent value for money for the customer. If you select something from a catalogue, that’s exactly what you’ll receive – cheap alternatives are never used for BGT Plumbing customers, and their competitive labour charges mean every penny you invest in the bathroom adds up to more quality for you. Furthermore, you’ll have all the information you need up front, with no unpleasant surprises or Copy deadline for the next edition is Friday 1st June

hidden costs. Tom said: “A bathroom is a very personal thing, and we like to give the customer lots of freedom in choosing the suite and the fixtures that they really like. That means we don’t do cheap deals where you’re tied into just one option; instead we work hard get the best possible price for the best quality supplies.” A recent en suite replacement BGT Plumbing carried out at a home in Sheriff Hutton, which involved gutting a 20-year-old bathroom, left the customer with a beautiful new bath, modern shower and floating vanity basin. The thank you letter from the customer said: “We are thrilled with the finished outcome. You should be proud of what you have done.” Tom’s team are fully GasSafe registered and accredited with BPEC, which means their safety training and installation skills are sharp and up to date with latest techniques and technologies.
Renewable energy In response to customer requests, BGT Plumbing will soon be equipped to install solar thermal panels. They’re now taking orders for the panels, which provide a constant source of hot water powered by the sun. This means you can cut your energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy hot water all year round. And with low maintenance costs and long warranties, once you’ve installed them, all you have to do is enjoy the savings for years to come. BGT Plumbing is well on course to achieve the MCS accreditation, a rigorous government quality assurance scheme that gives customers complete peace of mind that the installation, quality of service and products use satisfy exacting standards.

T
he tiles on your wall or floor have a massive impact on the look and feel of the room you’re decorating, so it makes good sense to choose a good quality option from a designer tile showroom. In addition to the way your tiles will look, their durability, quality and ‘clean-ability’ will have an effect as well, and it’s important to know that the product you choose will stand the test of time. Choosing the right tiles requires good advice, knowledge and experience. Ideally you need someone who knows tiles inside out, quite literally, and who can give you the design, style and decor advice that will stand you and your home in good stead for many years to come. Keith Bailey, owner of Continen-
tal Tile Studio, is that person. He founded the first tile shop in York many years ago and has been in the industry since 1974 – making him York’s most experienced tiles specialist. Added to this is the fact that he has been an agent for reputable italian, french and spanish tile factories since 1980 – which means he is guaranteed to always bring style and quality design to the forefront. Continental Tile Studio is to be found on The Bull Commercial Centre, just next to Dean’s Garden Centre. You can browse the showroom’s 21 wall and floor tile displays at your leisure, all of which are laid out together with accessories and other design ideas, so you can really get a feel for what can be achieved in the home. There are also mosaics in glass and stone to inspire you, plus

Furthermore, there are new designs and different sizes appearing every month, so it’s well worth visiting regularly to get a full picture of the range available. If you’re looking for a classic ceramic or porcelain look, the selection at Continental Tile Studio is second-to-none. Their selection of stone tiles can give a natural, warm feel to your bathroom or kitchen, whether you use them on the floor or walls. Their glass and stone mosaic tiles in a huge range of colours can really set your decoration ideas alight, making stunning splash backs behind sinks, adding interest to shower units or bordering plainer tiles to add a fresh feel. Or you can choose glass tiles, to add colour and a sense of light to your decor. Many of Continental Tile Studio’s tiles are imported from manufacturers from across Europe, hand-picked by Keith himself for their quality and up-to-date style. Browsing the showroom is a great way to get some ideas together for the right look for your home. However, if you’ve got a specific colour you
know you need, or a particular effect you’re trying to achieve, talk to Continental Tile Studio’s experienced staff. Keith and his team are always happy to share their knowledge with their customers, and they’ve got a wealth of professional advice to share. Keith said: “I always pride myself on good customer service – that is, and always will be, top priority for Continental Tile Studio. I only sell quality tiles and I’m the most experienced tile man in York, so our customers receive the very best in terms of choice, advice and professional service. That means they end up with results they’ll be delighted with every time.” Continental Tile Studio is a great place to visit, whether you’re just putting your interior decor plans together or you know exactly what you want With easy access, ample parking and a wealth of inspiration inside, it’s well worth a visit today Contact Keith at Continental Tile Studio on 01904 400526. 2012 - Diamond Jubilee Year
W
e all know that 2012 is the Diamond Jubilee of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne but what, or who, else is celebrating their 60 year anniversaries in 2012? I have taken a walk back through time to look at some of the events that took place in 1952 and to hopefully raise their profile in our Diamond Jubilee thoughts. In London Theatreland, Agatha Christie’s famous murder mystery play ‘The Mousetrap’ celebrates running continuously since 1952. During this time over 24,000 performances have been given making it the longest running show, of any kind, in the world. In celebration, The Mousetrap will go on its first ever UK tour - the ‘Diamond Anniversary Tour’ this year. Meanwhile in the world of film, 1952 saw the release of several, now well known, British films including Limelight, The Importance of Being Earnest, Moulin Rouge and The Pickwick Papers. The popular British children’s television programme, The Flower Pot Men, was first transmitted in 1952 as part of the BBC children’s series Watch with Mother. It was repeated regularly over the next twenty years and starred two little men made out of flower pots who lived at the bottom of a garden with the third character, Little Weed. Record charts in the UK started in 1952 when Percy Dickens from New Musical Express began compiling a hit parade. Initially, Dickens telephoned a sample of around 20 shops asking for a list of the 10 best-selling songs. These results were then aggregated to give a Top 12 chart published in the New Musical Express on 14 November 1952. The first ever number-one single was “Here in My Heart” by Al Martino and it held the top spot for nine weeks. An aviation ‘first’ celebrates its diamond anniversary in 2012. The world’s first Jet Airliner, a De Havilland Comet, made its first commercial flight from London to Johannesburg carrying 36 passengers. The total journey of nearly 7,000 miles took over 23 hours and allowed for five stops at Rome, Beirut, Khartoum, Entebbe and Livingstone. Each

passenger on the historic flight received a special first flight certificate signed by one of the pilots, Captain AM Majendie. A single fare was £175 and a return £315. On the home front, a report showed that many people were not paying their TV licences. This led to the implementation of the first TV detector vans in 1952. The vans were to pass slowly along roads and pin-point where receivers were in use. TV detection officers would make doorstep inquiries as they went along. Winston Churchill’s government scrapped ID cards as they felt that in peacetime they were no longer needed and tea rationing came to an end meaning that tea loving Britons were once again able to enjoy unlimited ‘brews’ for the first time in 12 years. Sweets, meat, eggs, butter and sugar remained on ration. With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder if Edinburgh City Council would have still voted in favour of getting rid of electric trams and replacing them with Double Decker buses back in 1952? Little did they know the issues that their successors would encounter in implementing a new tram system some 60 years later! In March 1952, William Speakman-Pitt received the first Victoria Cross invested by Queen Elizabeth II. Speakman-Pitt was born and raised in Altrincham. He was 24 years old and a private in The Black Watch when he broke up several enemy attacks, causing heavy casualties and in spite of being wounded in the leg continued to lead charge after charge. He kept the enemy at bay long enough to enable his company to withdraw safely. Later that year, John Bamford became the youngest person to be awarded the George Cross, aged 15, for bravery during a house fire in Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire. 60th birthday celebrations will be in order in 2012 for Allan Wells MBE (former Scottish athlete, who became Olympic Champion in the 100 metres at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow), Jenny Agutter (film and television actress) and Joe Johnson (1986 World Snooker Champion). So, I think it’s fair to say that there is certainly a great deal to commemorate in 2012! Copy deadline for the next edition is Friday 1st June

he European Court of Justice (ECJ) have made it official – there is no difference between men and women. At least when it comes to insurance there isn’t. From December 2012, it will be illegal for Insurers to differentiate between men and women when it comes to pricing their policies. So who cares? Well you should - it’s going to affect a lot of you. When men came to take income from their pension, they used to get better rates than women. But that was only because they were expected to die sooner than women. On the other hand, life insurance premiums for women would generally be lower – again because women were expected to live longer and therefore less likely to die before the end of the plan. The plain truth is that women live longer than men. But the European Court is so powerful, it has decreed that life expectancy of both men and women will henceforth be exactly the same. Well that’s not exactly true. But Insurers will not be allowed to differentiate between men and women - even though they pose completely different risks. So guess what? This makes absolutely no sense. But we’ll have no option but to accept it and cough up. Because the effect of this nonsense is that it’s likely that men’s pension income rates will fall and women’s insurance premiums will rise. MeMo to WoMen - if you’re thinking about taking out insurance, now might be a good time to do it. (If you don’t think you need life assurance – it could actually be the most important thing you do for your family.) Act now and talk to us. YORK
York Opera
Emily’s Column
at the Kirk theatre, Pickering
Hello again, All those who know me will probably be aware of my (bordering insane) passion for reading. In my opinion there is no better way to spend a weekend than to curl up with a good book, lying in front of a roaring fire and holding a good latte! Mmm… To me, reading isn’t a chore when your parents have dragged you off facebook. Nor is it a vain attempt to get educated. As geeky as this sounds (and I’m sure it will), I love reading for the same reason other teenage girls love watching a good film; to lose yourself in someone else’s fantasies, to hold your breath at the next cliff-hanger in anticipation of the protagonist’s catastrophes. In reading a book you don’t have to limit yourself to someone else’s acting abilities and interpretation of the story, you can use your own imagination. And you can read your favourite lines over and over and over again. Despite my love of a good paperback, I do also enjoy snuggling up to watch a film now and then. Recently, however, I’ve found myself getting more and more annoyed with films which ruin someone’s appreciation for a good story. A good example of this is the Twilight series. Stephenie Meyer created entertaining, emotional characters which can now be seen on almost every young teenage girl’s wall as ‘TEAM JACOB!’ posters. It seems that anybody who doesn’t fit the ‘giggling and squealing’ criteria, is thought to automatically cringe at the word Cullen and stick their nose up at the word vampire. I’m not in any way saying that I enjoy “’I want to drink your blood’ ‘YAY!’” books, but for me, supernatural novels simply add danger and difficulty to already exceptional storylines, and passion to the romantic tales that any girl could enjoy.
Shouts of “Bravo” were heard from enthusiastic audiences for York Opera’s series of spring concerts. They have enjoyed medleys from Gilbert and Sullivan and Mozart together with solos and ensembles and choruses from Verdi Puccini Wagner and Bizet. The final concert in the series will be held at The Kirk Theatre Pickering 7.30 pm Saturday 9th June. Tickets £10 from Television House, Market Place Pickering 01751 472847 or at the door
I told you it would sound geeky…

Marking the Jubilee with a tree You may have noticed a new cherry tree on the verge opposite the Recreation Hall in Wigginton. Wigginton & Haxby WI have donated a flowering cherry tree to the community to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. Angela Bailey, president of the Wigginton and Haxby WI said: “We thought it would be a lasting reminder of the Jubilee and we have planted it as near to the border of the villages as possible.” The Women’s Institute is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK and takes part in a wide variety of activities, striving to be a part of community life. Wigginton and Haxby WI meets every second Thursday in the month at St Mary’s Church Hall, Haxby at 7.30pm. For more information contact Mrs Graves on 01904 750570.

amilies in Sheriff Hutton and surrounding villages are about to have a brand new, purpose-built children’s nursery, providing welcome flexibility for busy parents in both holidays and term-time. Like many working mothers living in the area, when Sarah Kelly returned to work a year after her son was born, closer childcare would have made a huge difference to her long working day. Based on that experience, she has founded a new nursery on Sheriff Hutton business park – and as a primary Sarah Kelly, Owner of school teacher with a Puddleducks Day Nursery passion for childcare, she’s the ideal person to do so. At the heart of everything the nursery will do is Puddleducks’ ethos, which values working in partnership with parents to nurture children, and to help give them the strong grounding of confidence, curiosity and love of learning that will stand them in good stead for the future. The nursery building work is nearing completion, having received planning permission with unanimous support from Ryedale’s councillors, at Christmas. Sarah said: “We did a lot of market research beforehand, and the response we received from the business park, Sheriff Hutton village and the surrounding areas, confirmed that it will be a vital provision in the community.” The purpose-built nursery will have three rooms catering for different ages – babies in the ‘nest’, toddlers in the ‘ducklings’ room and pre-school youngsters in the ‘ducks’ room – all with their own outdoor play and learning environments. Freshly prepared food will be provided on site in the nursery’s own kitchen. Full details about the nursery, including drawings of the layout and images from the building process, are available at www.sheriffhuttonnursery.co.uk. You’re welcome to come along to our fun filled, family open day on 7th July from 1pm to view our impressive new premises, and meet the staff. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 19
YORK
providing quality upvc products The company Window Distribution Ltd was founded in 1991 to service the PVCu Window, Door and Conservatory needs of local Builders, Joiners, PVC fitters and Builders Merchants on a supply only basis. They were one of the first trade fabricators to seek to offer a quick turn around on orders and have developed a strong, successful association to supply many businesses within the sector, including some well known national building trade suppliers and local housing authorities. They are also on the approved supplier list for York and Ryedale housing. Still a privately owned company, they have proved sustainability in the market and after 20 years of trading, still trade under the same name. Unlike other companies who specialise in glass or frames, Window Distribution not only supply the frames, but also own the glass factory which means they are not relying on other companies for quality. Over this time, they have steadily grown and built up an enviable reputation for exceptional customer service and high quality products, manufacturing over half a million double glazed units and over 125,000 windows (which equates to 12,500 average 3 bedroom houses). They have a stable customer base and have indeed retained many customers from the first year of trading, underlining how seriously they take customer’s needs. Customer satisfaction is achieved by meeting the requirements of BS EN 1279 and the British Standards Institution Kitemark scheme.
QualiTy producTs Window Distribution encourage the end user to come and view the products: to see where they are made and the quality they are receiving. This inevitably promotes confidence and helps trades when selling their service. Products continue to be updated and they now offer intelligent self clean glass which also retains and refracts heat to keep up with energy efficient standards. 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

In this way, Window Distribution are able to work out details of yearly savings on heating costs which tradesmen can pass on to the end user, as home-owners will inevitably use the rating as part of their purchase decision.
QualiTy Team
The success of the company has been greatly assisted by the efforts of its staff and their dedicated contributions to the overall team effort. The majority of the shop floor team have been with the company 8 years or more. All of the admin team are involved in the quality process and are all BSI qualified and trained in quality management systems. As a small company with 20 full time employees, plus a key office team (who all have 18 years plus service) Window Distribution Ltd can offer a higher quality service as requests can be dealt with by staff who know and understand the business. They can offer a personal service and build up strong continuous customer relationships.
afTer sales service
Window Distribution offer a 10 year product guarantee and have now been established twice as long as that guarantee giving you confidence that they will be there to deal with any issues. They have complete technical knowledge of the products on offer, enabling immediate support to trades when you need it. As Window Distribution are fabricators, their products can still be updated 15-20 years on as well as additional parts supplied. Buying local means you get a personal service and you are able to come back if you should experience any problems, which is not always the case when buying from some of the bigger companies. Future plans for the company are to build a new showroom. With so many products on offer, Window Distribution Limited want to be able to display as many as possible, so traders benefit from being able to show the end user - i.e bi-fold doors, composite doors and indeed quality.

Handy Household ...Shining and Smooth with Olive Oil
W
hile you are likely to be aware of the health benefits of consuming olive oil, you may not realise the many other uses of this natural product. Not only is it a good lubricant, as its molecules have the ability to slide easily over one another, but its film can fill rough spots in many surfaces, making them look polished and shiny. For instance, it has many cosmetic uses. Olive oil can give a closer shave than shaving cream and can also be used to remove eye makeup, by simply dabbing some under the eyes and rinsing off with a face cloth. What’s more, you can massage it into your nail beds to moisturise your cuticles and if you have dry skin, rub in a thin layer after a shower. Around the house, adding a little to your duster will leave surfaces looking polished and stainless steel will look great when you use olive oil as a shining agent. You can silence squeaky doors by wiping the top of the door hinges so that the oil runs down the sides. Similarly, pour a little onto a cotton bud to get sticky zips moving again. Even the cat can benefit, because adding a quarter of a teaspoon to your pet’s food will help to prevent hairballs. So, not only is this ancient oil good for you, it’s also good for your home and your pets.

A Plumber to rely on Ben Leefe has been creating beautiful bathrooms in the York area for ten years.
for a long time, but it seemed the installation and wiring meant they were stuck with it. Ben, however, managed to change them over to a thermostatic shower... and restore peace to the family once more!
e mainly works in domestic properties and specialises in installing bathrooms, showers – and helping families solve their plumbing problems. For example, he recently helped a father get out of the doghouse with his family and become his teenage children’s flavour of the month. The household had been struggling with an inefficient, aging electric shower
In response to customer demand, last year Ben qualified to work with gas and was registered with Gas Safe, meaning he can bring the reliability and quality of workmanship he’s known for to boiler and central heating installations and plumbing.

Ben doesn’t believe in being a ‘jack of all trades’ – he prefers himself and the people he works with to be masters of one. He works alongside experienced tilers and a trusted, qualified electrician, which means he can ensure your bathroom project is completed as swiftly as possible and every aspect of it is carried out by the appropriate expert. While he focuses on the plumbing – the bit he does best – the tiling and electrics

Three days a week my son, who is 19, goes to Friendly personalised service for small college less than 20 miles away. But the free bus winds around every village and takes an hour and a businesses, home office and home users half. He has to catch it at 7.30, which means leaving Repairs the house at 7.25. Now if that was me I’d be up at 6.30 to give myself plenty of time for breakfast and a Upgrades shower. But not my son. If he misses the free college bus he’ll have to take two ordinary buses, pay more than £5, and be late. Eventually I can’t bear it any more. I rap tentatively on his door. Only now he’s 19 and a man I can’t bawl him out. Instead, I have to say something neutral like: “Everything under control up there?” I still receive the same old teenage mouthful back, though. Now I know perfectly well that I should let him stew. He’s a grown man now and ought to take the consequences of his own actions, or rather, inactions. But it’s easier said than done. Spring Clean Your
Make-Up Bag It’s a fact that many of us stubbornly hold on to our old favourite ‘can’t live without’ product, even though it lurks deep within a jam-packed make-up bag and is - more often than not - the most unappealing looking thing in there.
T
hat perfect shade of red lipstick, easy to apply liner and super-lengthening mascara might do its job expertly, but if it’s been hanging around for months, it may be threatening your health. Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes, all because your products are long past their best. Not all manufacturers place ‘use by’ guidelines on their make-up, so it can be hard to know what is an acceptable amount of time to keep your beauty buys for. So we have compiled a guide to give you the low down on when is the right time to say goodbye to your trusty old product. Mascara: Buy a new one at least every three or four months. Changes in texture and smell can indicate that it’s past its best. If you’ve had an eye infection, then discard the mascara you were using when it started and invest in a new one to avoid re-infection. Pencil eyeliner: They are fine to use until you need to replace them, as the tip that is in contact with the eye is constantly being sharpened and therefore kept fairly clean - just make sure you always cover the tip with the protective lid. liquid eyeliner: Should be treated the same as mascara and replaced every three to four months. As with all eye make-up, never be tempted to share yours or borrow someone else’s - it’s the fastest way to spread an eye infection. eye shadow: Fine for a few years as long as they are stored properly in their original container. Make sure you replace the applicators regularly. Foundation: Generally safe to use for around twelve months, foundations should be kept away from direct sunlight or intense heat to ensure a long lifespan. Clean your foundation brush or sponge on a regular basis. Powder Blusher: Safe to use for a few years as bacteria can’t breed easily in the dry formula. a year as they are in constant contact with your mouth. Be aware of changes in smell and texture to determine if it’s time you should be looking for a new one. Moisturiser: Aim to discard moisturisers after six months. Changes in smell and consistency indicate that the product has reached its ‘use by’ date. sunscreen: Aim to purchase brand new sunscreen every year, as the ingredients that protect you from damaging UV rays can become less potent over time. nail Varnish: Usually varnish will last for a good twelve months. If after shaking you aren’t able to mix it together, then it’s a sure sign it is ready to be thrown away.

Sticky Lamb Chops by Jared Smith age 12 Ingredients 8 Lamb Chops 6 Large Potatoes 2 tbsp Redcurrant Jelly 4 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar 2 Sprigs of Rosemary 2 Cloves of Garlic 2 Handfuls of Fresh Redcurrants
1. In a saucepan on low heat,
mix together the redcurrant jelly and red wine vinegar. Chop up the garlic and rosemary and add them to the sauce. Mix and leave on the heat until there are no chunks of the jelly left (this should take about 5 minutes). When finished put the lamb chops into a shallow dish and pour the sauce on top. Cover with cling film and leave aside for an hour. 2. Half an hour before you are ready to serve, peel the potatoes and slice them up into pieces around 1cm thick. Put them in a saucepan of boiling
water and cook for 10-15 minutes or until soft. When they are finished, strain the potatoes and fry in oil for 5-10 minutes on either side, ensuring that they are brown and crispy. You can now either put them on a plate under tinfoil or put them in a warm oven until they are needed to be served. 3. Remove the lamb chops from the marinade/sauce and put on a plate to dry a little before you cook them on the griddle. Heat up the griddle with olive oil until hot and sear the lamb chops on either side to your liking. Meanwhile pour the
sauce back into the saucepan, add a couple of handfuls of redcurrants, and heat it up to be served. 4. Once everything is cooked and prepared; remove the potatoes from the oven and serve with the sticky lamb chops, redcurrant sauce and green vegetables.

Nissan Juke R
at Goodwood
I
must admit if I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I wouldn’t get much work done. The temptation to hoon up and down and scare the milkman in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist. Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s well wheel-trodden hill climb is always welcome. My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events – the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from the supporting manufacturers. Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke / GT-R one night stand – and the right genes made it across into the sibling. Under the matt black Juke bodywork is the running gear and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed into the Juke’s bodywork, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around three seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe, gave it the green light. Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML – one left-hand and one right-hand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK. So what’s it like to drive? Well, the 1.16-mile Lord
38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
March drive was never going to be long enough to get a real feel for this amazing car, but first impressions were staggering. The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour. The first corner is a tight right hander and an overzealous prod on the cold brakes soon made me realise I could have carried 20mph more through the bend. In front of the house, I managed five secondsish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered – 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me). Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo – but turned all the way up to 11. It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify – especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k. Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissanpowered excursion will be remembered as a very special one. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk) Copy deadline for the next edition is Friday 1st June

ollowing last year’s event which raised nearly £10,000 for Ryedale Special Families, the Yorkshire Wold’s Cycle Challenge needs just 30 more entries to double the entry size from last year.
For those new to this event, the challenge is to cycle 146 miles in 2 days on the new fully signed “Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route”, a circular tour starting and finishing at Norton College, Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire. Leaving your car at Norton College on Saturday morning you will set off along the first day’s 73 mile section. At the end of day 1, enjoy an overnight camp at Hutton Cranswick Sports & Recreation Centre, complete with barbecue, licensed bar and live entertainment! (Don’t worry - your tents are transported to Hutton Cranswick for you!) After a hearty breakfast on Sunday morning, set off on the second 73 mile leg returning back to Norton College in the afternoon to collect your Completion Certificate and Goody-Bag and also where showers and refreshments will be available. The Challenge is suitable for experienced cyclists as well as adventurous families, couples, individuals, or groups, but please note that this is not a race and all cyclists must follow the Highway Code! Obviously an important part of your challenge is to raise as much sponsorship as possible for Ryedale Special Families! There is lots more information at www.yorkshirewoldscyclechallenge.org.uk or phone 01904 720003 or 01653 690503.

eeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. Feeding keeps the grasses growing vigorously enough to help keep out moss and weed growth. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is often in short supply largely because it is so important in the formation of the grass and, as this is constantly being removed by mowing, it’s constantly necessary to replace it. There are also many other nutrients, in particular phosphorus, potassium and iron which help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined by many factors including soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn.
and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps left by the dead weeds. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait a couple of weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand, using a daisy grubber or even an old kitchen knife. A proprietary moss killer should take care of the moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the mosses have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. It’s worth remembering that once the moss is dead the lawn will look worse than when the moss was alive. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect is even worse – all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed or, if necessary overseed the worst looking areas as well, it will soon green up.
Regular mowing is essential
If your lawn has a weed problem and you’re happy using chemicals, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers (usually two different ones to provide best overall control)
Regular mowing is essential. A lawn which is left for too long before the grass is cut will soon lose its good, green appearance and when it’s finally ...continued over

YORK cut, you may well wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green. As a rule, you should try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. During spring, once the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of cut will be noticeably greater than in early spring. With the onset of summer the rate increases rapidly again. However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a really smart lawn for show that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch or slightly longer, but remember that to achieve this during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week – another good reason for keeping a more low-key lawn! What about mowers? The range seems to be ever increasing and the one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job you want your machine to do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder mower is best, as it tends to give a better quality cut. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit
uneven then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations and, in most cases the cut it gives is perfectly adequate. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should definitely be raked up immediately. However, if you cut the lawn regularly and produce only tiny clippings then, particularly during very dry weather, there may be some advantage to leaving them on the lawn where they can act like a mulch and help to by Pippa Greenwood conserve soil moisture.

YORK
York's NHS Walk-in Centre has moved...
T
he NHS walk-in centre on Monkgate has moved to become part of the urgent care centre at York Hospital.
The urgent care centre will be situated within the emergency department at York Hospital, and is be managed by a team of medical and nursing staff with the skills to see and treat minor illnesses and injuries requiring urgent attention. Moving the walk-in centre makes it easier for patients to access the service that is most appropriate for their needs. They will also be able to access the range of specialist support services available at the hospital if required, for example x-ray and other diagnostic tests. By separating minor illness and injury from the main emergency department, the emergency department staff can focus their efforts on the most seriously ill patients. The emergency department has also been redesigned to better accommodate patients. There will be a single reception point and patients will be directed to the urgent care centre or the emergency department depending on their need. Mike Williams, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “A significant amount of work has been undertaken to design an improved service that both meets the needs of patients and makes the best use of all available resources. The project has involved close liaison and collaboration with GPs, walk-in centre staff and the ambulance service. It should ensure that those attending the urgent care centre are treated by the professional with the skills best suited to their needs. It is important that patients carefully consider if their need is truly urgent; the majority of minor ailments and minor traumatic conditions can be treated by GPs and pharmacists. The urgent care centre staff will refer patients presenting with chronic and none urgent conditions to a more appropriate health care provider.” Dr David Hayward, GP and member of the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group Board said: “The new urgent care centre is an important part
ntre n ce ent i k l wa urg NHS d to the Yor k e h e T e t Th mov has centre a igginton care ital on W p Hos d a Ro
of the urgent care pathway. General Practice surgeries also provide an excellent service for patients with urgent care needs and in fact 95 percent of urgent care is managed by GPs. We would encourage all patients with urgent care needs to contact their own GP practice in the first instance. Most practices have systems in place to prioritise these patients where appropriate and see them quickly and efficiently. It is important that patients are seen in the right place at the right time and GPs and the urgent care centre staff are working hard to make sure this happens.” The urgent care centre is one of a range of options that exists to support patients, and those who do not require emergency treatment can also consider making an appointment to see their GP, visiting a pharmacy or calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home
M
other’s Day is always a doddle to sort out: flowers, some chocs and smother her with cuddles. With June comes Father’s Day and suddenly we’re all stumped. We’ve put together a selection of books where fathers figure. Some will make you laugh, whilst others will have you crying with pity or frustration. Why not pop one in the post and start up a conversation with the old man?
Harry Silver Man and Boy Tony Parsons
Harry Silver’s life is turned upside down when the boy in him has a one night stand. Suddenly his marriage is over, he’s lost his job and he’s bringing up his son on his own. Mirroring Parson’s own life, this is the story of a 30 year old TV executive who’s forced to grow-up. This hilarious comic novel is wonderfully written and portrays the highs and lows of the touching and often tender relationship between a father and son. Will Harry ever reach maturity? Only time will tell.
King Lear William Shakespeare
Talk about the original ‘daddy’s girls’. King Lear decides to divide his estate between his three daughters based on how they flatter him, this apparently proving who loves him best. It’s a bit of a recipe for disaster, and Lear quickly descends into madness. Cordelia is the only daughter not to play along and is promptly disinherited. It’s a tragic story of misplaced fatherly love. Our advice to dads: read the cards from your children carefully! Atticus Finch 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee
Scout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town’s prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone’s hearts.
Willy Loman Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller’s ultimate tragic hero Willy Loman is a salesman at the end of his career. Miller wanted to capture the struggles of the ‘everyman’ by creating this ‘low-man’. It raises questions as to what makes a man great. Willy is a truly flawed character, constantly dispensing terrible advice to his two sons, Biff and Happy. He fails to see the love his family feels for him and this is the real tragedy. To the last, he strives to
leave something for his boys so that they at least, can live out the American Dream.
Allie Fox The Mosquito Coast Paul Theroux
The young Charlie Fox documents the time spent in the Honduras jungles after his father Allie uproots the family and turns his back on American capitalism and consumerism. The book charts the unravelling of Allie as he strives to find a better life for his ‘tribe’. There’s no doubt that Allie’s behaviour is erratic and maniacal but his sense of adventure and inventiveness means you can’t write him off as a bad father.
Dante Boys Don’t Cry Malorie Blackman
What happens when fatherhood is thrust upon you? Dante’s waiting for his A-level results but instead, finds his baby daughter on the doorstep. Her mother can’t cope and Dante’s forced to face up to his responsibilities. Battling with social preconceptions and the realisation that his plans have to change, this is a rare book that tells the story of teenage pregnancy from the father’s point of view.

Short Story Bernard’s Unlikely Catch by Jackie Brewster
B
ernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where
48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
she’s going,” Bernard thinks. Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things
cost money. Then, feeling more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles.

Diseases in Rabbits Nicola Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets
T
his month the focus of this article is on infectious diseases in rabbits and their prevention.
Rabbits are becoming increasingly popular pets in the UK and are often kept as much more than your typical child’s pet these days. With this rise in popularity, much more is also now known about the types of medical problems they can encounter and new treatments and procedures are also being developed too. One such new development is a combined vaccine that is now available against both myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease because, whilst there are now more treatments than ever available for bunnies, these two diseases are still usually fatal. Myxomatosis is caused by a poxvirus and is spread by rabbit fleas and also direct contact between rabbits, wild rabbits often act as a reservoir for the infection. When a rabbit becomes infected with the disease, the clinical signs usually seen include lethargy, a high temperature, not eating and conjunctivitis affecting both eyes. This often leads to swelling of the membranes around the nose, eyes, mouth, ears, genitalia and anus and can then also progress to a thick, pus-like discharge from the nose. The majority of affected rabbits die within 2 weeks and, though supportive treatment can be given, euthanasia is usually recommended to prevent suffering. Rabbit haemorrhagic disease, previously known as viral haemorrhagic disease, is another viral disease, this one caused by a calicivirus. It is a highly contagious disease that is caught either by direct contact with another infected rabbit or can be carried on our hands, clothing etc (although the virus itself is not harmful to humans). This disease is a common cause of sudden death in rabbits which can be accompanied by bleeding from the nose and mouth and there are often no warning signs that anything may be wrong. If a rabbit is over 2 months of age when it becomes affected, then there is nearly a 100% chance that it will die of the disease and there is no treatment available. Originally this disease was more commonly seen in the south of the UK in the 1990’s but it is now more widespread and can occur anywhere. The new vaccine has only recently been released
50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
for use but is the first time that it has been possible to vaccinate for both diseases at the same time, as with the previous vaccines that were available 2 separate injections had to be given 2 weeks apart. The vaccine can be given from 5 weeks of age and provides immunity for 12 months for both diseases, whereas previous vaccines have only given immunity for myxomatosis for between 6 and 12 months. The vaccine is available now and an appointment can be made by ringing reception at the practice, the cost is £30 +VAT and this also includes a full health check and the chance to discuss any concerns or queries you may have with the vet.

Lorelai A
mysterious pair of eyes peep at you from over the edge of the cat bed, flickering nervously as you slowly approach, you see a wriggling movement under the cat blanket, fleetingly revealing the soft luxurious tabby fur (and a rather generous belly too!), your eyes meet, slowly a furry head rises from the depths of the blanket to shyly greet you… Here she is…it’s Lorelai! This quiet 4 year old cat was brought in to us because her previous owners were separating and neither of them could take her to their new homes. Some cats settle in to life in the Adoption Centre very quickly, others, like our Lorelai here, find it hard to get used to the comings and goings, strange smells and sounds, so at present she is quite reserved. We think that once she’s found a new home, and had a chance to settle into it, Lorelai will once again be the playful
and adventurous cat she once was. Everyday she emerges a little more from her shell and we can see that behind that worried expression is a lovely young cat who is just dying to make friends with you. Lorelai would be best suited to a quieter home, ideally with no other pets, somewhere she can be given time to take things at her own pace and get that all important TLC that she needs. If you think you can offer this deserving lady a new home please contact York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or email us york@cats.org.uk . You can visit the Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Rd. everyday between 11am & 3pm.

Edmund Collins rides again! Forty year’s on – after winning at Ayr I’m back in the saddle on the 16th June 2012 at York Racecourse, but this time racing for Macmillan Cancer Support with the aim of raising £2,500+. I’m a firm believer in the importance of the great work performed by the Macmillan organisation, and I’ve personally known of a number of friends and relatives who have benefitted tremendously from their nurses’ kindness and expertise. I hope you will help me raise funds so that this worthy charity will continue to offer practical help and comfort to people diagnosed with cancer. To see my fund raising in progress and to make it easier for you to show your support please go to this link www.justgiving. com/Edmund-Collins All contributions however small will help towards the target ...and every pound will help people living with cancer. Thank you for your support
