for a long time, but it seemed the installation and wiring meant they were stuck with it. Ben, however, managed to change them over to a thermostatic shower... and restore peace to the family once more! This typical case study demonstrates how Ben is willing to spend time to help homeowners find exactly he right solution for their home and their family. Free estimates and quotes are available.
H • Multi trade team e mainly works in domestic properties and specialises in installing bathrooms, showers – and helping families solve their plumbing problems.
Ben doesn’t believe in being a ‘jack of all trades’ – he prefers himself and the people he works with to be masters of one. He works alongside experienced tilers and a trusted, qualified electrician, which means he can ensure your bathroom project is completed as swiftly as possible and every aspect of it is carried out by the appropriate expert. While he focuses on the plumbing – the bit he does best – the tiling and electrics
are being carried out by people who are fully qualified for the job. In response to customer demand, last year Ben qualified to work with gas and was registered with Gas Safe, meaning he can bring the reliability and quality of workmanship he’s known for to boiler and central heating installations and plumbing. elcome to the June edition. This month in the magazine, there is help for booking your holiday, help with planning your will and lots of help from our local businesses who are keen to provide a fantastic service to their local customers. Sunday 16th June sees us all come together to celebrate the most important man in our lives – our dads! Remember to make him feel special. In our house, this will involve our teenagers letting their dad get on with DIY without being disturbed or asking whether he’s putting a top coat of paint on yet! My car, a Golf, is starting to look (and sound) a bit worn and I decided last month that it really didn’t look good to be driving around in a clapped-out car with peeling off Handy Mag stickers all over it. me in it! I always get lots of waves and smiles when driving around in our distribution areas - which is lovely. Time to remove the stickers, get the car cleaned properly and replace it or the stickers. Out I went with my hairdryer (helps warm the car so that the stickers come off ) and started peeling. Initially it was very satisfying and the car was starting to look cleaner and smarter, that was until I got a bit over enthusiastic, pulled off a big chunk of sticker and ripped off some of the lacquer! Now I’m driving around in a clapped-out Golf with peeling lacquer and the worst thing is that nobody waves at me anymore!

Making a Song and Dance of It The West End will soon be heaving again as tourists flock to see the hottest musicals. Many of them started life as novels, plays and poetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchy show-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s our pick of the best-loved tales to get the toetapping treatment. Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw Long before Julie Andrews was beaten to the film role by Audrey Hepburn, My Fair Lady began life as Bernard Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. The deliciously arrogant Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can turn ‘guttersnipe’ Eliza Doolittle into a lady but she is far from being the downtrodden flower girl he believes her to be. It’s one of Shaw’s greatest critiques of the English class system and it’s abso-bloomin’-lutely hilarious to boot. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats T.S. Eliot When Cats were merely kittens in Lloyd Webber’s eyes, readers were curling up in a sunny corner with T.S. Eliot’s Practical Cats. Writing under the name ‘Old Possum’ in letters to his godchildren, Eliot’s poems included tales of Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees and Bustopher Jones. The charming collection is much-loved the world over for its unique take on cat psychology. Les Miserables Victor Hugo Jean Valjean is a man who’s desperate to escape his past, but with a policeman like Javert on his tail, this escaped convict is going to have a battle on his hands. Les Mis has 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
everything: mistaken identity, injustice and love, all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Ian Fleming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Musical Car was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original threepart series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caractacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, crosschannel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory. Oliver Twist Charles Dickens Fagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and composer Lionel Bart picked more than an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of
Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and simply terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novel opens with Twist enduring life in the workhouse before being taken on by an undertaker. He escapes, only to fall in with Fagin’s gang of pickpockets. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Gregory Maguire Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.

Where do you find a painter and decorator who’s as passionate about your home style as you are?
R
ichard is an apprentice trained decorator, having spent 4 years at college learning his trade. He has 35 years experience working with some of the country’s best decorators up and down the UK and in thousands of homes and businesses, as well as well-known country estates. Job satisfaction is crucial to Richard, which is why the work he does is high quality workmanship. He says: “I like to work with people who think of their house as their pride and joy, because that’s how I feel about my work. I like a job to look absolutely amazing when it’s finished.” Most of Richard’s work comes through recommendation – he often returns to a single customer regularly, and it’s not uncommon for him to spend some months working for neighbours living in the same cul-de-sac, as word about his quality, good manner and competitive prices spreads. He’s well trusted by his customers, and if you’d prefer to give him the key while you’re at work or on holiday and avoid the hassle and disruption of having the decorators in, plenty of his customers have done that in the past, with complete peace of mind. Richard’s long experience means he can give lots of advice on what colours, styles and fixtures will work in a particular room, or how you can achieve the effect you want. For a reliable local decorator, call Richard now on 01653 693161 or visit his website to view examples of his work.

Bring Me Sunshine
Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory. Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. Bespoke designs will cost more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Size, siting and aspect For a useable room allow at least 8-10 metres of floor area and consider how the space will complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? Try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat. Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, to match or complement your house. More recently, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and can be system-built quickly and easily. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential and the best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argon-gas filled units for maximum insulation. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You could place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either warm-water pipe or electric cable, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue you can install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house. Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need a cool waft of air. Roof
vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open and close at the necessary time. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan. Shading Blinds ensure privacy, provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If heat is a problem, try solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. Take your time choosing a look that’s right for you; consider how easy they are to clean and whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. Check www. planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority. by Katherine Sorrell

Top Tips from a dental professional
How to reduce your Dental Bills...
When we go to the dentist be it our regular check- up or with a problem our hope is that we will either not require any treatment or that it will be quick, painless and not be expensive. Did you know that it’s within your control to reduce your need for dental by Christine Parker treatment and the associated BDS (GDC 72136) costs to a minimum? By following the following top tips you can just about guarantee yourself improved oral health and save time, distress and money! • Avoid snacks between meals and drink unsweetened tea, coffee or plain milk or water. You can use a sweetner for hot drinks, however diet fizzy drinks and cordial are often very acidic and can strip the enamel from your teeth. • If you enjoy sweet foods/drinks then have them immediately after a meal. • Brush with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes. Your dentist may prescribe you a high fluoride toothpaste if you are seen to be at increased risk of decay. Chew gum containing Xylitol as this also reduces cavities. • Don’t rinse after brushing as this keeps the Fluoride on your teeth and gives maximum protection against cavities. • Use disclosing tablets, they can be purchased from the dentist or chemist. When chewed these stain plaque bright pink/ purple and can highlight where we need to brush better. They are great for adults but your children will love them! • See your dentist at the recommended interval which can be from 3 monthly to 12 monthly depending on your risk. For a comprehensive oral health check and tailor made advice to improve your oral health contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice and change the way you look at the dentist.

Where there’s a (badly drafted) will, there’s a way (to contest it)
Y
orkshire folk have a reputation for being careful with money. Yet a recent survey suggests fewer than half of us have a will. What I don’t get is why you’d spend your whole life being careful with money, then let someone else decide who gets the spoils when you die? Husbands and wives assume their money and property automatically go to each other on death. Not so. Instead, “intestacy rules” apply, which means somebody else divis up your stuff and dishes it out. Even when there is a will, your wishes won’t necessarily be followed. Few people know that a valid will can be changed. And a badly drafted will – i.e. one when the wishes of the individual concerned are unclear, can lead to devastating consequences. Divorce and second marriages can raise some particularly thorny issues when it comes to wills. A recent case where a will was contested by warring siblings ended up with nobody but the lawyers getting anything at all. I’m sure that’s not what the deceased would have wanted.
A clear valid will is a vital part of professional financial planning by Julie Wilson – but is overlooked by many advisers. We always discuss wills with clients, and make sure they will achieve the desired effect. They rarely do. Often, old wills contain Discretionary Trusts which are not only no longer strictly necessary, but may actually make things worse. We have several arrangements with some of our legal contacts to get your will written or reviewed at special rates, or even for free in certain circumstances. If you want to make sure your wishes are carried out properly when you’re no longer here, just give us a call. An initial meeting is entirely at our expense and without any obligation. If you’d like a FREE copy of our Factsheet on Wills and Intestacy – which outlines what will happen to your money if you don’t make a valid will, and how to make sure your money ends up where you want, just contact us – details below – and we’ll get one straight to you

If you’re having veggie friends around for lunch or just fancy a meat-free supper for a change this colourful salad will fit the bill. Falafels are small Middle Eastern deep-fried patties made with cooked chick peas. You can buy them ready-made in most supermarkets or deli’s but they are really easy to make at home with just a can of chick peas and a few store cupboard ingredients. For an on-the-go salad pack into warmed pitta breads. Serves 4
Ready in 30 minutes
Ingredients: • 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 4 tbsp freshly chopped parsley or coriander • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp chilli powder • 2 tbsp plain flour
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Oil for shallow frying • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 2 tbsp olive oil • 150g bag mixed salad
• Half a small iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 150g goats’ cheese, roughly crumbled
For the Dressing: • 6 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • tsp Dijon mustard
Falafel, Pepper & Goats Cheese Salad To make the falafel, place the chick peas, garlic, parsley or coriander, spices and flour in a food processor and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Process for about 1 minute until you have a fairly smooth mixture. Turn into a bowl then divide and shape the mixture into 12 small patties with clean wetted hands. Shallow fry the patties in hot oil for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Meanwhile, place the sliced peppers on a foillined grill pan and drizzle over the olive oil. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until tender and lightly charred in places. Toss together the salad leaves and shredded iceberg lettuce. Arrange on four plates with the grilled peppers. Halve the hot falafel then add to the salad and top with roughly crumbled goats’ cheese. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a screw-topped jar and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve immediately. Tip Add a handful of fruity black or green olives to the salad or sprinkle with some lightly toasted pine nuts to give an extra Mediterranean flavour. 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Encephalitis Society is a registered Charity whose home is in Malton, North Yorkshire. The Society has resisted pressure to move to London and takes pride in supporting and being part of the local Yorkshire economy. Being the only resource of its kind in the World on Encephalitis, it has been described as a jewel in the crown of Yorkshire. Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain usually caused by infection or by our own immune system erroneously attacking the brain. Encephalitis is indiscriminate showing no respect for age, sex, nationality or culture and we estimate around 4000 new cases every year within the UK. Mortality (death rate) is high (1030%) even with treatment. With improvements in drug therapy and intensive care treatments more people are surviving than in the past. This means that many people are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary. The nature of such a hidden disability often means people’s needs are not met or recognised. The Society’s vision is to live in a world where Encephalitis is as rare as it possibly can be, given its eradication is unlikely; and that those affected, as well as their families, have access to early diagnosis, excellent management of their condition, timely access to rehabilitation and other forms of social support. Their aim is to improve the quality of life of all people affected directly and indirectly by Encephalitis, and they achieve this by: 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

supporting adults and children affected by Encephalitis, their families and carers by providing advice and information and working at a national and international level to improve services. producing evidence-based, quality information on all aspects of the condition in printed, electronic, video and audio formats. raising awareness about the condition and its subsequent problems among relevant professionals, statutory agencies and the general public. conducting research and work in partnership with other researchers and their establishments.
The Society values the support it has been shown by the Yorkshire community, particularly in recent difficult economic times. If you would like to support the work of the Society you can do this in a number of ways:
• • •
Do you own a Company and are looking for a Charity Partner? Have you got skills/expertise you would like to volunteer? Would you like to make a donation to their work, or hold a fundraising event?
The Society also supports their local community by hiring out its Executive meeting and training room. The room can be set up in a number of different ways and can accommodate up to 25 people. Full AV and conferencing facilities are available along with refreshments and basic secretarial services. The meeting room is provided at very competitive rates and a brochure and pricing structure can be obtained by contacting The Society below or clicking this link:

Short Story The Crab Sandwich
T
he beach was a well kept secret. On a day like today, other beaches would be teeming with holiday makers, but this secluded cove, a hike across grassy dunes, was known only to the locals. Barry stood, hands on hips, breathing in the fresh sea air. “We have the beach to ourselves, Daffers”, Barry called. “Nothing but us, the surf, the seagulls and delicious crab sandwiches”. Daphne was panting from the weight of the picnic hamper and bruised from the deckchair banging against her shin. Barry had insisted they bring them, but was unable to help carry due to a nasty back strain. By the time she reached the beach Barry had sandals off and was paddling in the surf. “Just set up anywhere”, he said. “I wish we’d bought a bucket and spade now”. Daphne doubted she could have carried another thing. “Wouldn’t digging be bad for your back?” “Oh yes”. Barry rubbed his back thoughtfully. Daphne battled to erect the deckchair while Barry watched. Then he eased himself down into it. “Ready for a spot of lunch?” He opened the hamper. “I couldn’t resist the crab sandwiches from that new delicatessen”. Barry took out the sandwiches wrapped in a paper bag. There was also a bottle of sparkling elderflower juice and several kilos of freezer packs. “You had me lug all these?”
34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Daphne said. “And what’s this?” Underneath was a hardback novel. “I fancied a spot of light reading”, Barry replied. The book was at least 800 pages long. Daphne was too hot to argue; all she wanted was a nice cold drink. “There’s only one glass”. She searched the hamper. “Yes, I didn’t want to weigh you down. You don’t mind swigging from the bottle, do you Daffers?” Daphne didn’t mind, though she objected when Barry used the handkerchief he’d been wearing on his head to wipe the bottle neck. Daphne bit into her sandwich, then chewed thoughtfully. Her taste-buds debated what she was eating. “Barry, there’s been a mistake. This is cottage cheese”. He wiped the crumbs from his lips. “Yes, I only had enough for one crab sandwich. They’re pricey, and I thought we’d agreed you were watching your weight”. Daphne fumed as she chewed on her tasteless sandwich, watching Barry savour every mouthful of his. A seagull landed and strutted about in the sand close by. “What a majestic creature”, Barry said. And Daphne had to agree that it was a beautiful bird. She was always amazed by how large seagulls were, and what intelligent eyes they had. The bird wandered a little closer.
“Shoo birdy!” Barry called. “Get your eyes off my crab sandwich”. The bird cawed and took to the sky. “That showed him”, Barry smiled. He was about to take another bite when the bird returned, dive bombing straight for him. Barry yelped and dropped his sandwich. With practised speed the seagull picked up its prize and dashed away. Barry leaped to his feet. Grabbing the hamper, he held it above his head and chased the bird towards the water. Daphne stared as Barry, without showing the slightest twinge in his back, threw the hamper at the bird, which, calmly spread its wings and flew into the sky, along with the crab sandwich. Barry came stomping back towards Daphne. “I blame tourists, they feed them chips and this is what happens”. Daphne swallowed the last mouthful of her sandwich and nipped into the vacant deckchair. “I totally agree with you”. She picked up the novel and turned to page one, “But, so lovely to see that your back has been fixed”. By Jackie Brewster

Volvo V40

ONE ARE the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes. Volvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable - and the V40 is the latest one. Like all Volvos it is well built but this one has a definite athletic appearance about it. From the twin tailpipes to the low profile tyres on 18 inch rims the V40 D4 SE means business. But does it deliver? Absolutely. The 1984cc five cylinder, 20 valve oil-burner churns out 175bhp, so 0-62 comes in at a rapid 8.6 seconds. The wide car sits low on the road and takes corners on rails. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and, as with all Swedishmade cars, the seats are ultra supportive on long commutes. The V40 isn’t just about performance and grip though; it also provides enough space for four-up. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough

to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids. Of course, safety is never an issue with Volvo and the V40 is no different. It is the safest car in its class, having achieved the highest score ever recorded by EuroNCAP in recent crash tests. This is thanks, in part, to pioneering technologies such as the world’s first pedestrian airbag and Volvo’s autonomous braking system, City Safety, which also now qualifies for reduced insurance premiums. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,795.00 V40 D4, on test here, is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 65.7mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don’t want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety

The Giza Pyramids
By Solange Hando
Did you know that in 1978 a Japanese corporation tried to build a replica of the Great Pyramid on a 1/20 scale, using the same methods as ancient Egyptians? They didn’t succeed so modern technology was called to the rescue but after just 18 days, the pyramid collapsed.
How did they manage in ancient Egypt? Over 100 pyramids have been discovered so far across the country, most stunning of all the iconic giants dotted on the Giza plateau. Up there, above the bustling city of Cairo, it’s hard to comprehend how blocks of granite weighing up to 80 tons could be brought down the Nile from Aswan, 800 kms away, hauled up to the site and put into place, together with over 2 million limestone blocks. That was around BC 2584; no wheel, no iron tools, but with a workforce reaching over 40,000 at times, the Great Pyramid rose to 146.5 metres. Over the millennia, erosion has nibbled away almost eight metres but among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Khufu is the only one still standing. Being the oldest and largest, it draws the biggest crowds while the nearby pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure seem almost lost in the wilderness, looking down on the small Queen’s satellites and the camels waiting for a ride on the desert sands. Khafre appears bigger than Khufu but guides will tell you it’s an illusion, due to its higher elevation and steeper angle. Besides the pyramids, the complex includes remains of a causeway, an 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Egypt impressive valley temple and a lost city or workers’ village, where evidence points to highly skilled labour rather than slaves, and pits for ritual boats with a life size reconstruction in the museum. Ritual barges were designed to carry the Pharaoh with the sun god across the heavens and ensure a royal afterlife. The pyramids, it was thought, were royal tombs but when they were discovered, they were empty, no human remains, no treasures. Looted or moved to a safer place? No one knows for sure yet their connection with the afterlife and the sun is undisputed. Rising on the west bank of the Nile, the side of the setting sun and symbol of death, they are shaped like the descending rays which were originally reflected by polished surfaces. Some experts believe the alignment of the Giza pyramids mirrors the Orion constellation, associated in ancient Egypt with Osiris, the sun god of rebirth and afterlife.
Visitors can no longer climb to the top of the Great Pyramid but those who come prepared with sturdy footwear venture up the high steps to the new entrance where a short passageway leading to nowhere sends shivers down their spine. It’s dark and eerie inside and you cannot help wondering what may be lurking in the chambers you cannot reach. It’s a relief to return to the light and watch great clouds of dust as guides vying for custom send their camels racing across the sand. ‘Ride, madame? I’ll show you the Great Sphinx.’ No one can leave Giza without paying tribute to this mythical guardian, half human, half lion, once partially buried in the sand. Over 73 metres long and 20 metres high, it’s said to be the world’s largest monolith statue. Defaced by vandals and desert storms, it remains hauntingly beautiful, as powerful today as it was over 4000 years ago.

Bugs and beasties are really thriving in this warmer weather, so just how should you deal with the most common problems you are likely to encounter at this time of year? Aphids Greenfly and blackfly, also known as aphids, can be a real menace as they suck sap from your plants and can transmit viruses at the same time. Aphids breed incredibly rapidly, so regular control is necessary. • Check plants regularly and either spray with a suitable insecticide or a soap or plant oil based insecticide • Use biological controls –
they’re totally safe for all other creatures and of course leave no residues • Use a strong jet of water to blast the aphids off plants, but do a thorough job or else they will soon be back up and causing damage Caterpillars Caterpillars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but can do a lot of damage as they munch their way through your plants and perhaps even into your vegetables. • Hand pick the pest where possible and either squash or place on the bird table. They’re easiest to spot at dusk or very early in the morning. • Spray with a suitable contact insecticide or better still use the Nemasys Caterpillar biological

control. • Some caterpillars, in particular the Tortrix Moth produce quantities of fine webbing which they use to bind leaves or other plant parts together to create particularly safe shelters for themselves. It’s hard for a pesticide to actually reach them so hand picking or squashing is often the best answer. • Cover caterpillar-susceptible crops such as calabrese, broccoli and other brassicas with Envirofleece or Enviromesh. Woodlice Woodlice often cause a lot of concern, however these little creatures are rarely responsible as they simply do not have adequately strong mouthparts. They can cause damage to soft new growth or occasionally to soft-fleshed fruits such as strawberries but can’t tackle tougher plant growth. You may see them at the ‘scene of the crime’ and presume that they

have caused the initial damage but they have probably moved in to clean up a lot of the debris created by other creatures. Earwigs Earwigs can cause quite a bit of damage, particularly on the flowers of plants such as clematis and dahlias, where they nibble out large quantities of petal or occasionally leaf. Try trapping them using an inverted flowerpot on top of a bamboo cane. The bamboo cane and pot should be positioned amongst susceptible plants and the pot needs to be stuffed loosely full of hay, straw or similar material. The earwigs climb in there to hide and the pots can them simply be emptied out on a regular basis. Mildew Powdery mildew is also a problem at this time of year; it coats plant leaves, stems, buds and sometimes even petals with a white floury deposit. Sometimes the mildew can also

prevent fruits from swelling normally, cause the leaves to become distorted and even fall early. Prompt action is essential and if you wish you can use a proprietary fungicide but check the label carefully for suitability. Keep the damage to a minimum in the first instance by ensuring that the plants are kept well watered. In addition try to ensure a good flow of air around the plants. I
returned from the supermarket the other day with my car full – not of food but cardboard boxes, they happened to have an exceptionally good range by the checkout tills.
I am always on the lookout for good boxes for my pets, as they are free and provide all sorts of uses and are easily replaceable. Pet rabbits like to have things to hide under in their outdoor runs to provide shelter from rain or shade from sun and also security if they are frightened by something. I up turn cardboard boxes and cut a hole in one side and a hole or flap in the other to provide some entertainment and a good thing to chew or gnaw on. My little boy also finds it hilarious if we cut smaller holes in the ‘roof’ of the box and poke dandelions through then watch them disappearing into the box as the bunnies eagerly pull them through. Cats always seem to make a b- line for any cardboard box lying around the house, the tray shape boxes make good beds – I’ve even seen them stacked to make ‘bunk beds’.

YORK • JUNE 2013 • ISSUE 91 My cousin’s cats sleep in double decker banana boxes by the Aga with the older stiff cat on the ground level with a little cut out on the side for ease of entry and the younger cat on the top tier, the whole thing would be purring when you came down in the morning! Another great gift for your cat is a cat nip plant for the garden. This is a lovely and long flowering herb and is used for making cat nip toys but the real thing is even better! My cat loves lying and rolling on the plant when he comes across it and we break off fronds, crush the leaves a bit and play – he goes quite crazy for it whether it is green and growing in the summer or dried up and brown in the winter.

also have different purposes, there are some that will involve interaction with their humans, things to throw and tug. Others are useful to keep your dog occupied when you are not around. Raw-hide chews, pigs ears and dentistix are useful not only to give your pet something to do but also help to promote healthy gums and teeth by chewing which stimulates saliva production in the mouth and has an antibacterial effect. One of my colleagues used to leave ‘ kong’ toys stuffed with bits of food (you can use some of their usual dry food or even smear the grooves with canine toothpaste) hidden in various places in the dog’s environment for them to seek out and consume whilst she was out. The favourite toy for a certain springer spaniel friend of mine is a torch and somewhere dark, she never seems to tire of chasing the light and entertaining whoever she can entice to play with her!
There is no end of toys available for dogs with different things suiting dogs of different sizes and breeds. The humble cardboard insert from a kitchen or toilet roll will always provide some ‘free’ entertainment. Toys
Can you help Rosie W
e currently have a very special young lady residing at York Cats Protection Adoption Centre. Of the 30+ cats we currently have in our care Rosie is the cat who is finding life in the Centre the hardest. Rosie is a beautiful smoky grey Maine Coon cat, with a fantastic whispy coat and bright green eyes. Rosie was brought in because her previous owner was having to move house and unfortunately couldn’t take cats into her new rented property. In this picture Rosie looks a bit scruffy because
we had to shave off some of her fur as she was quite matted when she arrived – so anybody thinking of homing her needs to be handy with a grooming brush! Poor Rosie is a very shy cat and as such is not suited to being in a busy Adoption Centre environment, where she is surrounded by other cats and lots of people coming and going. What this sweet girl needs is some good old fashioned peace and quiet. Rosie needs a serene new home where she is the only pet, and one where she can gently get used to new people and new surroundings. She has never been outside and so would be suitable as a house cat….in fact she may not even want to go outside, even if she has the option. On the plus side, we are sure that somewhere amidst all that fluff lurks a happy and friendly cat
and it would be a most satisfying experience to see Rosie’s true colours emerge. If you live in a quiet household and have the patience to wait for Rosie to learn to trust you then please contact the Adoption Centre. You’ll make a lovely cat’s life complete. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Visit www.york.cats.org.uk to see the other cats in our care.

Ella... ...on dreadlocks
L
et’s start with some facts; I have dreadlocks. At the moment, I have eleven of them. I am not a cavewoman or a wannabe new-age hippie – and, yes, I wash my hair. For those not in the know, a dreadlock is essentially a matted coil of hair that can be formed in numerous ways, all which are commonly disputed among dreadheads. Basically, a long string of knots needs to be created in one section of hair, and over time they become tighter and denser until, voila, dreadlock! Not a lot of people know all that much about dreadlocks, which is fair enough as it’s a pretty alternative hairstyle. As far as I’m concerned, I reserve my teenage right to look as weird as I want to, however, I have come across a fair few misconceptions floating around when it comes to the topic of my hair. First of all, “But dreadlocks are dirty and smelly and they attract headlice”. False. Hair actually forms dreadlocks much more effectively when it is clean and dry, and washing them regularly is really important in keeping them looking neat, as oil or grease reduces friction in your hair, so it’s more difficult to get really tight knots. As for lice, a dreadhead is just as likely to get them as any regular-haired person. Besides, head lice prefer to live in clean hair. Next, “Don’t you have to re-do them everyday?” No, actually, my oldest dreads I did roughly a year ago, and it can take even longer than that for them mature fully, and turn from a knotty string into a nice smooth, round cylinder shape. “Are you Rastafarian or something?” Nope, not that there’s anything wrong with Rastafarianism, but not everyone who has dreads is doing it for religious purposes, some of us just do it for a lowmaintenance hairstyle, or we think they look cool. Also not true is the famous “You’ll have to shave your head when you want to get rid of them”. It is, in fact, perfectly possible to brush out dreadlocks, provided you have copious time, energy and conditioner. Personally, I don’t plan on taking mine out for a while yet. They’re a fun thing to do with my hair, I get to decorate them by stringing little beads onto them, and dreading other people’s hair is a good way to a get a little extra cash! Dreadlocks may not be for everyone, but if you remember just one thing from this article, yes, I wash my hair! -Ella PS Apologies for not updating on the vegetarianism last month, shame on me. For anyone willing to give it a go, it’s totally manageable, in fact laughable so, and nut roasts taste really good!

Raise money to care for terminally people inyour area by taking part in Marie Curie’s 10K twilight walk at Castle Howardthis July. Afterwards enjoy picnics and after-dark entertainment finishing witha special nursing message and celebration of light. Together, the walkers and their supporters, helped raise more than £30,000, funding over 1000 hours of Marie Curie Nursing at last year’s event for nursing care in the local community, so that more terminally patients can continue to be treated in their own homes. Support your local Marie Curie Nurses by joining hundreds of people on a 10k twilight walk through the beautiful grounds and estate of Castle Howard. Write your own personal message for a loved one on a candle bag, and our glowing display of remembrance will welcome you on your return, after which you can picnic or treat yourself to something special from our caterers whilst enjoying the live entertainment. The evening will conclude with a special Nursing message and a celebration of light at 10pm, the time at which our nurses are starting their shifts in a patient’s home. With your help and support Walk Ten at Castle Howard will raise money for the care of people with terminal illnesses and provide support for their families.
