W
elcome to the March edition.
Mother’s Day will fall on Sunday 15th March and it’s time to show your appreciation! As a mum, I know! Of course expensive gifts are not needed. Last year, thanks to my daughter, I had breakfast in bed and it was lovely to be made to feel special. Capturing the moment, this month’s column from Emily is all about Mother’s Day. It’s a must read about how she and her sisters treat their mum on Mother’s Day (see page 26). Nicky and I were shamelessly reduced to tears over our keyboards. Lucky lady! One of the quirks, and there are many, in publishing the magazines is the comments our readers come back with. We have many tales of appreciation but also correction on our grammar over an apostrophe and, as last month, on our historical accuracy. In last month’s competition to find a viking, we stand corrected in by a reader in Haxby for pointing out to us that Vikings did not actually wear horns on their helmets! The Handy Mags are all about supporting our communities. For our businesses we have paidfor advertising space, and for our local charities
and not-for-profit groups we give away space for free. However, we have been amazed in the office this month (actually we’ve been pretty cold, but amazed as well!) how few people actually know this. It really is free, utterly free, to local not-forprofit organisations and charities. As a community leader, or a willing member of the public planning a community event how else will you get to say what you are doing to 24200 households, a possible 50,000 faces! You just have to ask Nicky and she will ‘make it so’; no strings! Well done to GW Potter for winning the January competition. Until next month…

hoosing the perfect surround for your fire sets the tone for a room scheme says Focus Fireplaces and Stoves of York.
A fireplace, whatever the season, should be the primary focus in your living space. First, consider the age and size of your home. Unless you want to go for something ultra-chic and modern, the best rule of thumb is to work with the original fabric of your property. If you’re lucky enough to have the original opening – a brick-built inglenook, for example – then you’re ready to consider either an open fire or stove installation.
designs with equal impact,” says Julian Sommers of Focus Fireplaces. “We have seen a move towards a more refrained style which has culminated in the ‘hole-in the-wall’ look where a fire is inserted into the wall with a minimal frame.”
But if you’re starting from scratch, then there’s a fire surround to suit your home. Consider the size and space available – a fireplace that’s too busy is likely to overpower your scheme, but downscale too much and you’ll lose the dramatic focal point you’re after.
Focus Fireplaces have long been recognized as the area’s premier fireplace experts and specialists. Their large showroom features a selection of fires, stoves and fireplaces for all types of homes. The friendly and knowledgeable staff have literally decades of experience in imparting the technical help essential in choosing a new fireplace.
‘There’s a long tradition of framing the fires and stoves in our homes. Materials such as Marble, Wood and Limestone remain firm favourites and have proved capable of carrying either elaborate or simple

LOST AND FOUND They say you can both lose yourself and find answers to the meaning of life in a good book. We’ve put together a collection of some of the best stories about getting lost, being lost, and (sometimes) being recovered. Whatever age we are sometimes, we all feel a little lost and disoriented. This will help get you back on the right track- from a literary point of view at any rate.
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast - By Cheryl Strayed
There’s going for a walk to clear your head and then there’s deciding to trek eleven-hundred miles on your own. Twenty-six year old Cheryl Strayed has just lost her mother to cancer and her marriage to irreconcilable differences. She packs up her life and decides to hike along the West Coast of the United States, from the Mojave Desert in California up into Oregon and finally Washington State. She’s not a hiker and she has doesn’t really have a plan, other than to keep on walking. It’s an incredible journey, dominated by soul-searching and physical endurance. Read it with a cuppa and your feet up- or in a tent up a mountain somewhere if you’re that way inclined.
Lost and Found -
By Oliver Jeffers What would you do if you found a penguin on your doorstep? Would you keep him as a pet as in some soppy Christmas advert for a department store, or would you assume he was lost and take him back to the South Pole? This is such an endearing story for a picture book and asks questions about loneliness and isolation. Next time a penguin comes a-knocking, he might well just be looking for a friend.
Life of Pi - By Yann Martel
This is an incredible novel, and if you haven’t read it or heard about then you must have been stranded on a boat in the middle of the Pacific for some considerable time. Sixteen year old Pi is searching for answers and meaning to his life when he becomes lost at sea after a cargo ship sinks. His only companions are a lame zebra, a blood-thirsty hyena, a sea-sick orang-utan…and a 450 pound Bengal tiger. Not the most ideal of situations but what unfolds is the most incredible story of survival. Beautiful.
tale of schoolboys who find themselves washed up on a desert island after a plane crash has stood the test of time, with new readers discovering it from every generation. There’s camaraderie at first, with allegiances formed and survival skills kicking in. But events soon take a sinister turn and leader Ralph finds he has a bit of a mutiny on his hands. Who wants to spend all day doing chores when you have a tropical island to explore and enjoy? Civility quickly descends into anarchy and sadly, not everyone will leave the island alive.
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - By David Mitchell
From acclaimed author David Mitchell, this novel’s set just before the turn of the 18th century, in 1799. Clerk Jacob de Zoet becomes stranded on the Dutch East India Company trading post of Dejima just as war breaks out between the English and the Dutch. The historical novel focuses on the story of the Dutch trader’s love for a Japanese midwife and it’s a compelling tale, but it’s the attention to detail that makes this novel so remarkable as Mitchell paints a brilliant and elaborate picture of Japanese life and culture at that time.
Stolen - By Lucy Christopher
Not so much lost as taken- Gemma is a teenage girl who’s kidnapped at Bangkok airport and transported to the Australian Outback by her captor, the unusually gorgeous Ty. Gemma starts to develop a serious case of Stockholm syndrome and begins to see her captor in a different light. The story is recounted through a letter Gemma is writing to Tythe man who wanted her and her alone. Once again, the descriptions of the harsh and unforgiving Aussie landscape give it a great presence, as though it’s essentially the book’s third main character.
Lord of the Flies - By William Golding
How long would it take for a group of young castaways to turn feral? William Golding’s classic 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The City of York Council has announced that the number of York residents claiming Jobseekers Allowance has fallen by a huge 54%. Since January 2014, almost 1000 people have found employment in our city. Figures, released by the Office for National Statistics, show York to be the fourth best-performing city in the UK. Now, that’s truly something to celebrate! This positive news demonstrates that the Council’s plans are starting to improve local prospects, as well as our economy as a whole. The Council are continuing to build on this success and in January they held a highly popular apprenticeship drop-in session. The event helped those aged 16 and 24 to discover new ways of getting into paid work. Those in attendance were given guidance with CV writing and vacancy applications. The next session takes place on 12th March at the West Offices, Station Rise. These events provide young adults with essential knowledge, helping them stand out from the crowd. This March we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, to share the important impact apprenticeship’s have on individuals and the larger community. As York is well-known for its volunteering, it may not surprise you that the Council is currently offerings a wide range of opportunities. Residents are invited to get involved with the community by volunteering in adult learning, mentoring and even gardening! There is a project to suit any personality, so why not get involved, meet new people and learn something new? Last month our Council was credited for its continued commitment to development so we can be sure that local opportunities will not dry up. Prospects are rife and York’s economy seems truly at its peak. What better start to this wonderful spring season could we have hoped for? For more information on opportunities in the area, as either an applicant or an employer, visit www.york.gov.uk. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd March

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Sète - Water Jousting problem, a small fleet of motor boats buzzes around, ready to pluck the unfortunate fully soaked heavyweight out of the deep. Sometimes a burly jouster will miss the water altogether and drop like a stone into the opponents’ boat. Oh la la… The crowds cheer, laugh, clap, the judges scribble copious notes for it isn’t just about getting wet or staying dry; speed, accuracy and respect for the rules matter too.
B
etween the vast lagoon of Thau and the blue waters of the Med. in the south of France, Sète is a delightful place crisscrossed by canals where myriad boats tie up along the quays. Quaint flower-draped bridges span the water, seafood restaurants set up their tables in the shade and pastel-coloured lanes climb up the hill for spectacular views. But the ‘Little Venice of Languedoc’ comes into its own at the height of summer when water jousting is in full swing, staging over 50 tournaments across the region. Most prestigious of all is the heavyweight Grand Prix held in Sète on the feast of St Louis. Tingling with anticipation, crowds gather early on the banks of the Royal Canal to watch the opening parade and the first ‘pass of honour’ when opponents exchange the traditional handshake and if they know each other well, a resounding kiss on the cheek

in true French style. Two boats will compete, one red, one blue, each one with an oboist and a drummer playing traditional melodies in the bow to set the tone for the long-awaited festival. With their beribboned straw hats, they look straight out of a Venetian painting. Meanwhile, the White Knights take up their positions, 10 on each boat, most of them fishermen, entirely neutral but the strongest fastest oarsmen you’ve ever seen. Captain at the helm, the first star jouster climbs on the pedestal rising at the stern two metres above the water while others wait in line for their turn. All is set for action, shield protecting the jouster’s chest, long wooden spear with steel tips held tight under the right arm. Oboists and drummers break into a frenzy, excitement mounts on all sides and the red and blue boats race furiously towards each other, ready to send the first jouster diving into the water. Which will it be, the blue, the red, both of them maybe? No
At the end of the day, the winner will receive the best prize of all, ‘immortality’, just like a god, when his name is inscribed on the jousting shield, as per tradition for the past 348 years. Sète held its first jousting tournament on 29th July 1666 to mark the foundation of the harbour which would be linked to the Canal du Midi, then at the planning stage. In the early days of jousting, the blue boat was for bachelors, the red one for married men. Today colours denote different districts but wherever you come from, being a jouster is like belonging to a brotherhood, You are upholding an ancient tradition which reflects the very soul of Sète, a city on water where future generations train with pride in the local jousting school. Colourful, exciting and free to watch, jousting in Sète is one of the most exciting festivals in Languedoc.

Can you help the Special Care Baby Unit at York District Hospital and knit or crochet hats? Lucy Thurstans, one of the founders, says “The hats can be made with any scraps of left over yarn or wool and are a great project for beginners or experienced crafters! The pattern for both knitting and crocheting is available on our facebook page, along with info on what to do with the hats once they are made – we have collection points around York and surrounding villages.”
‘Makers dozen, make and donate’ is a new community set up in November 2014 to make charitable use of their Crocheting talents! The group hope to supply hundreds of hats for premature babies at the hospital - and they need over 3000 a year!
If you would like to take part in this project, the pattern for the hat is available on our Facebook page. We encourage our “makers” to try and make a dozen, or half a dozen, or however many you can manage! You can then drop them off at one of our “drop off points” around York. EMILY... ON MOTHER’S DAY
A day that arrives every year with little preamble, resulting in many panicked Google searches for gift ideas or emergency trips to the shops the night before to buy the only battered and slightly wilted bouquet of flowers that’s left on the shelf. A sorry excuse for a day that is designed to celebrate one of the most important people in your life. In my house, however, this is not the case. My sisters and I have worked to get the act of Mother’s Day down to a fine science.

First, we make breakfast in bed. This constitutes waking up a lot earlier than deemed ‘normal’ for three teenage girls on a Sunday morning, arguably a sacrifice in itself! Usually one of us has taken the time to go the shops the day previous so we have all of Mum’s favourite breakfast supplies in stock, so it’s easy to to put together the next morning. Present wise, we always go very simple. I honestly believe that a bunch of flowers, some nice chocolates and a simple cup of tea are all that are needed on Mother’s Day, despite what the marketing machine tries to tell you! Then, comes the final teenage sacrifice: our time. Mother’s Day is the day my sisters and I are expected to clear our agenda to spend the day doing whatever my mum wants. Invariably this constitutes a bracing walk at the beach or up a very steep hill. During which, we are not permitted to moan, whinge or argue. However, this is my Mum’s favourite part of the day and (secretly) mine too. It’s not big gestures or expensive things that make Mother’s Day, it’s small gestures and thoughtful acts that may cause inconvenience to yourself for the day. But, isn’t it worth it? A small nod to the free taxis, emotional support and constant champion that is your Mum. This Mother’s Day, give the gift of time. Emily

THE LIFE LIST - FE FI PHOBIA
f there’s one thing guaranteed to get people rattled, it’s talking about their fears and phobias. While workshop gurus tell us to ‘face our fears’ and despite Susan Jeffers writing that we should Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, it’s surprising the effects they can have on us.
Some have official names, while others are still waiting to be categorised, and of course there is the top trump that is Phobophobia - fear of phobias. Take a deep breath and see if you recognise any of these: Bees (Apiphobia) - they can bring you out in hives. Mineral deficiency - It can leave you feeling out of salts. Laughter (Geliophobia) - which can often make you feel funny. Trendy summer holidays - they can frequently lead to hot spots. Needles (Belonephobia) - scientists are currently working on a vaccination for it. Arrows (Belosophobia) - they can leave you all aquiver. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Multiple text documents - try aversion therapy. Camping (Tisantaphobia) - hard to peg down at first, but will lead to intense emotions. Examinations - these days there’s a test for it. Alcohol (Methyphobia) - sometimes this one can really lower your spirits. Cooking (Mageirocophobia) - will frequently cause a stir or a pan-ic. Dairy products - you may be able to get some cream for it. Salted meats - try not to worry because they’re working on a cure. Car journeys (Amaxophobia) - if you can avoid a breakdown you’ll find there is support out there, but it can be a long road to recovery. © Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines. blogspot.com Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd March

Top Tips from a dental professional
NON-SURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION Do you ever look in the mirror and wish you had fewer lines and wrinkles. Do you wish your complexion was more luminous and even?
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
Here at Howardian Dental Practice Christine Parker, a qualified dental surgeon, has undergone the necessary training and has several years’ experience, in wrinkle reduction, dermal fillers and chemical peels. These can be used together or as individual treatments to subtly enhance your features. As an introductory treatment the facial peels are a real skin booster encouraging increased cell turnover and act at a deeper level than regular facials. We call these our ‘Red Carpet Ready’ peels as they not only make your skin feel softer, they also allow the skin to develop a real glow which is maximised after 3-4 days. They are perfect to be used a week or so before that special event. A course of 6, over 6 months, gives really lasting results. We also provide treatment for the reduction of active wrinkles such as laughter lines around the eyes and forehead creasing. These can be substantially reduced, and in many cases erased completely, for between 3 and 6 months. We only use filler approved and recommended by the FDA (USA drug regulatory authority), this is purchased from a reputable dental supplier and has a proven history of safe use. It can give great results by plumping up your lips and framing your smile If you would like to brighten up your features this Spring book now for a FREE consultation. Call Georgina on…

HOW TO BLOW YOUR PENSION
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
I
’m really worried about the new pension flexibility rules due in April this year. In the olden days, you could take up to 25% of your personal pension pot tax free. Anything else usually took the form of a guaranteed income for life – either by buying an annuity (which swaps a capital sum for a regular income) or taking the equivalent directly from the pot – known as “drawdown”. In any event, it was impossible to take the whole pot all at once. The Government have decided that from April, you’ll be able to take the lot. And do whatever you want with it. Blow it on a Lamborghini if you like. Research shows that over half of consumers do not understand the retirement income options open to them. They
don’t understand annuities and they definitely don’t understand drawdown. They don’t understand the financial risks of living longer. They don’t understand the impact of inflation on savings. So how can they make sensible decisions about their retirement income? Most people get that if you blow all your money, you won’t have any left. But what many people don’t get is the real risk of taking your pension all at once. And that risk is tax. Anything taken above 25% will be taxed at your highest rate. So if you take your total pension pot of, say, £100,000 under the new flexible rules, the tax man will get up to £30,000 of it. This “tax grab”, sorry, “investor empowerment”, is expected to generate extra tax of £4 billion by 2020. In my view, there’s never been a more blatant attack on pensions since Gordon Brown’s back door tax raid on pension funds back in 1997 that has so far netted the Treasury £118 billion. Nice work, Gordon! COOKING
SMOKED HADDOCK KEDGEREE Ready in 45 mins. Serves 4. the haddock in a large pan, cover with 1. Place plenty of cold water and bring to the boil.
2.
3.
Just a few ingredients are needed to make this simple rice dish but it’s full of flavour! It’s ideal for a quick and easy supper or filling weekend brunch served with crusty bread or warmed mini naan breads, if liked. INGREDIENTS: • 350g smoked haddock fillet
4.
Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5-6 minutes until the fish just flakes. Boil the eggs in a small pan of water for 7-8 minutes. Remove the fish with a slotted spoon and flake the flesh discarding any skin and bones. Strain the cooking liquid into a jug – you’ll need about 600ml so top up with water if needed. Run the boiled eggs under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the shells and cut into wedges. Set aside. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the spices and cook for 1 minute then add the basmati rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the reserved stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Gently stir in the flaked haddock, eggs and coriander and heat through for 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately.
TIP Add a large handful of baby spinach leaves or some lightly fried mushrooms just before the end of cooking to make this dish even more substantial.
• 4 large eggs • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • tsp ground coriander • tsp ground turmeric • 1 tsp mild curry powder • 300g easy-cook basmati rice • 3tbsp fresh chopped coriander 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

SHORT STORY FLOPPITY POPPITY by Jackie Brewster
“No can do, Dad”, Maxwell peered through his parents’ window into the twilight, “I’m checking the coast is clear”.
Floppity Poppity had been a present from Aunty Betty for Maxwell’s first birthday. He had sat in the corner of Maxwell’s bedroom and been a wrestling partner, a makeshift beanbag and a comforter through chicken pox. Maxwell loved him, just not enough to have him in his flat.
“Didn’t you buy that fancy sports car to attract the ladies?” Colin chuckled, picking up his newspaper.
“Chuck him in a skip”, Colin said bluntly. “The Dawson’s on the corner have got one, and it’s only half full”.
“Your neighbour, Dolores Bagwell, is no lady. She treats me like a free taxi service”, moaned Maxwell, “the second I unlock the car she virtually leaps into the passenger seat”.
“I’m sure they’d be delighted if Floppity suddenly appeared in it”, Maxwell said sarcastically.
the familiar sound of high heels tottering up the drive. His heart sank.
“They’d be fine, I’ve already asked them”. Colin quickly hid behind the sports page. Maxwell’s mouth fell open, “you want me to just throw him away, like we owe him nothing? Can’t you just put him back in my bedroom once you’ve decorated?”
“Maxwell darling”, Mrs Bagwell called, “the off-licence please. And be quick, it closes in ten minutes”.
“Maxwell, we need to talk about the rabbit”, Colin said gruffly, “will you please stop twitching the curtain?”
Maxwell closed the curtain and looked at his Dad. He knew what this was about. “You’re not getting rid of Floppity Poppity”, he said, “and that’s final”. “Mum and I want to decorate the spare room, and it’s time the rabbit went”, Colin said. “Went where?” Maxwell asked suspiciously. “I’m sure there’s space in your flat”, Colin smiled. Maxwell grimaced. His flat had nothing but space, and that’s the way he liked it. It had reclaimed oak floorboards, and zinc worktops. Floppity Poppity, a four foot cuddly rabbit with one ear, a tatty bow, and some mysterious stains would certainly not go with his decor. “I don’t see why I’ve got to take him just because you’re giving my bedroom a lick of paint”, Maxwell sulked, “it seems very selfish”. 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
“It hasn’t been your bedroom for over ten years and why you still need a cuddly toy is beyond me”. “I can’t believe you could be so heartless”. Maxwell snatched up his car key. “I’m going”. “Take the rabbit with you”, Colin called after him. Maxwell bundled the rabbit out of the house, slamming the door behind him. Opening the passenger door of his car he sat Floppity down on the seat. The rabbit looked sadly at him. “I guess it’s time to say goodbye old fellow”, Maxwell said, and, in one last tender gesture, fastened the seatbelt around him. Maxwell was getting into the driver’s side when he heard
“Mrs Bagwell, I can’t…”, Maxwell began. “Who’s that? A lady friend?” Mrs Bagwell peered indignantly through the windscreen at the shadowy figure inside. “That’s no good, she’s in my seat”. Maxwell seized his opportunity, “Yes, that’s, er, Flo”. “Flo who?” Mrs Bagwell asked resentfully. “Flo who sits in the passenger seat now”, he added cryptically and quickly started the engine. Reversing off the drive, he called, “Dad would love to give you a lift”. Then he grinned at the sound of Mrs Bagwell’s urgent knocking on his parents’ front door. “Floppity, old friend”, Maxwell smiled, accelerating past the Dawson’s skip, “I think you’ve just found a whole new purpose in life”.

the public that lead to warrants being executed in your area. You can also call Crimestoppers and remain anonymous and pass information that way should you prefer. Building relationships in the community also involves attending residents meetings, school fayres and any other event.
COMMUNITY POLICING
If you are part of a group that meets regularly or are organising some sort of Community event contact your local team who will be happy to attend.
here have been a number of changes in the way that Community Policing has been conducted in the City Of York in recent years but it always has been and still is a vital part of the service that we provide. Every Ward in the City has at least one PCSO that works in the area aiming to tackle local issues and to build up good working relationships with local Councils, businesses and residents.
For example, if you are a fan of live sporting events, a team of North Yorkshire Police Officers will be taking on Joseph Rowntree School staff in a friendly football match at the school on 20th March at 1630hrs and any support for either team would be much appreciated.
It is these relationships that are vital in making sure that your local Police Team are tackling the issues that you as the Public would like us to deal with. Every call to our Control Room is logged and your local Officers will view these jobs and they can be incredibly useful in identifying areas and issues that need to be addressed.

Flying Ducks present The Wiz the younger, and sometimes less confident, members of the cast. And it’s not just the youngsters who are keen to get involved, many of their parents support the group with fundraising, producing, costume-making, refreshments and much more. Sue Blanchard, chairperson, said “Putting on an annual show is obviously the most important aim for the youth group but with this we hope to introduce you to new skills and techniques across acting, singing and dancing. It will help you build confidence as well as having fun with friends and meeting new ones!” Flying Ducks Youth Theatre are a combination of both ‘Ducklings’ (up to around 12yrs) and ‘Flying Ducks’ (12-18yrs).
T
his month I was fortunate to be invited to visit Flying Ducks Youth Theatre at one of their practices in Haxby for The Wiz at Joseph Rowntree Theatre in March.
The Wiz should be a fantastic show. For tickets, please contact Michael Whyte on 01904 768963 or York Theatre Royal Box Office.
They are an enthusiastic group of 12 to 18 year olds who get together to sing, dance and perform. The group puts on one big show every year in the spring and this year is no exception. The Wiz obviously lives in Oz and he’s also the man Dorothy needs to help her get back home to Kansas! But in this modern, urban version of the much-loved ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ by L.Frank Baum, Dorothy’s journey through the surreal Land of Oz to the Emerald City is told through amazing rock, gospel and soul songs and energetic dances. Flying Ducks Youth Theatre are very proud to present this spectacular award-winning musical adventure written by Charlie Smalls and William F.Brown. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion all join Dorothy on her quest, and there is still the matter of the Wicked Witch of the West to contend with! Back to the practice and the group was hardworking but obviously having fun. It was interesting to see how much the older teenagers supported

MOTORING
Land Rover Discovery Sport SD4 By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMagazine.co.uk) out of place on the moon. However, the landscape gave us very little idea what it would be like to drive on a normal road. We can report it’s incredibly competent off road, though. We found the ride a little hard, but then that could have been the dreadful surfaces, and it was a little loud inside too, but again that was probably the studded tyres. It’s the first model in a new family of cars from Land Rover, but can the Discovery Sport live up to the legacy of the Freelander it replaces? James Baggott heads to Iceland to find out.
WHAT IS IT?
Land Rover has split its range into three distinct ‘pillars’. There’s Range Rover, the soon to be retired Defender range and then there’s Discovery. The Disco Sport is the first and where it sits in the range will become clear as the new models are unveiled.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
A diesel engine. Yes, for now at least, just the one. Jaguar Land Rover has an all-new set of power plants waiting in the wings, but they’re not ready yet. It comes in six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic guises, has 190bhp and 420Nm of torque. CO2 emissions are 161g/km and it’ll return 47.1mpg. It’s nothing ground-breaking, but there’s little wrong with it either.
VERDICT
There’s no doubt the Discovery Sport is a marked improvement on the Freelander. The interior is a vast improvement; it’s comfortable and has plenty of room in the front and back. The multimedia system is better than before, although not perfect, and off road it’s in its absolute element. However, with no time on ‘normal’ roads on the launch it’s impossible to report on what it would be like as a daily driver. We’ll reserve judgement on that for a later date. Mother’s Day Around The World By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
M
others deserve attention all year round, so why do we celebrate mothers on one special day - and do other countries follow suit?
THE UK
Traditionally, on ‘Mothering Sunday’ (the fourth Sunday in Lent) people returned to their baptismal ‘mother church’. As their parents’ home was often nearby, over time the day became a holiday for visiting family. Flowers were gathered on the way home and mums received Simnel cakes. Observance of Mothering Sunday gradually withered but after its revival in 1920 it spread throughout the Empire, becoming known as Mother’s Day.
AROUND THE WORLD
Most countries have a Mother’s Day, but origins and traditions vary. Unless stated otherwise, countries below follow U.S. tradition, celebrating on the second Sunday in May. In France, American soldiers introduced their Mother’s Day during the First World War. Originally focussed on fertile mothers, today Fête des Mères celebrates all mothers, who traditionally receive a cake shaped like a bouquet of flowers. France celebrates on the last Sunday in May, as does Sweden, where the Red Cross sells plastic flowers in aid of deprived mothers. In Italy mums receive a heart-shaped cake, but on the second Sunday before Christmas children in Yugoslavia tie their mother up until she gives them treats. Egypt’s Mother’s Day on 21st March is celebrated with songs devoted to mothers. In Nepal, children return to the family home on “Aama ko Mukh Herne Din” (“to see Mother’s face”) on the last day of Baishak dark fortnight, making breakfast for their mothers and giving them gifts, favourite foods and new clothes. Those who have lost mothers visit Mata Tirtha, a sacred site with a pool in which they ‘look upon their mother’s face’. 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The USA didn’t keep English Mother’s Day, but Anna Jarvis campaigned for one in honour of her mother, who introduced “Mothers’ Friendship Day” after the Civil War. At a church service on the second anniversary of her mother’s death (the second Sunday of May), Anna distributed her mother’s favourite flowers: white carnations. Today they signify mothers who have passed away, while coloured carnations honour mothers still living. In Australia, Mother’s Day grew from Janet Heyden’s campaign to give gifts to lonely inmates of Newington State Home for Women. Schoolchildren in Japan draw pictures of their mothers for a nationwide competition and winning pictures travel the country in a mobile exhibition. Mexico’s Mother’s Day on 10th May was once a pawn in battles between government and church on modernisation and materialism. It now celebrates both mothers and the Virgin Mary. Children often arrive at their mother’s house the night before. Traditionally the day starts with mass before mothers are presented with a breakfast of tamales and atole, but many mothers are now treated to breakfast at home, accompanied by a song. In Paraguay, Mother’s Day is celebrated with Dia de la Patria (Independence Day) on 15th May, to honour Juana María de Lara’s role in winning Paraguay’s independence. Similarly, Bolivia’s Dia de la Madre Boliviana on 27th May commemorates the women killed fighting for independence in the Battle of Coronilla. In Ethiopia, their ‘Antrosht’ celebration lasts three days, beginning after the rains have ceased (usually October/November). Traditionally, mothers cook a special meal but daughters provide dairy products, vegetables and spices while sons bring the meat. Afterwards they enjoy traditional songs and dances. So why not celebrate Mexican-style this year and sing your Mum a song? Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd March

CAT CHARITY WARNS OF THE DANGERS OF FELINE STRESS Cats Protection’s York Adoption Centre is urging owners to be aware of feline stress in the light of research showing many owners are letting their love for their moggies cloud their judgement when it comes to providing a stress-free home. A survey of 1,300 cat owners found that, when it comes to dealing with their stressed out pet, more than half (53%) would give them a cuddle. “Being held or stroked for too long can be very stressful for some cats,” says deputy manager Helen Curry “They’re not small furry humans so what would comfort us won’t necessarily comfort them.” Helen says: “Currently around 25% of the cats in our care came in to us because of reasons linked to stress, such as the introduction of a new pet, baby or partner or a house move.” Cats Protection’s top 5 tips to relieve stress are: • Try not to overly stroke or cuddle a cat which is showing signs of stress as it can make it worse.
• Provide cats with easily accessible places to hide It can be something as simple as a cardboard box on its side or upside-down. • Cats feel safer if they can view their surroundings from up high, so make sure they can access somewhere like the top of the wardrobe or shelf. • Ensure there is enough food, water and litter trays for the all of the cats in your household, ideally one litter tray per cat plus one extra. • Install a microchip or magnetic cat flap, which lets your cats into your property and keeps neighbouring cats out. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 55

GARDENING
Facing North By Pippa Greenwood
The problem I am asked about most frequently is that of what to do with a north-facing wall. Everyone wants to know what you can plant up it but more importantly, what you can do to increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving. Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers
below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the shade if you can. Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced). Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if

you change the colour of the wall before planting. A pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back to the plant and make it more likely to thrive. Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount of time that the wall looks good. Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximise your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate of potash as this will increase flowering potential. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then >> again in spring.

>> Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well. Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.

Berberidopsis Coralline Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in early autumn. Clematis - Many smaller flowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well. Codonopsis Convolvulacea Pretty bell or saucer shaped violet coloured flowers in summer. Humulus Lupulus (the hop) The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ will perform quite well as long as the shade is not too intense or the site windy. Hydrangea Anomela Petiolaris - A deciduous climber with broad
