elcome to our March edition.

For the Romans this month was ruled by Mars, the god of war, for when their armies could at last get back to fighting after the winter months. Curiously, the Pentagon seems to agree with this tradition as almost all major US-NATO led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March! Thankfully Mars was also the god of agriculture. It is appropriate then that we’re all out looking at our gardens expecting them to burst into life this month. If your garden is in need of some attention, there are lots of places and people who can help in this month’s edition. From garden centres to landscapers and tree surgeons, there really is no excuse for not getting your outdoors off to a great start this spring. My other half will be itching to get out there tidying and raking and digging and cutting. The garden centre will be a big draw and I’m sure some new ‘interesting’ plants will appear in the flower beds when I’m not looking! Everyone seems to be ‘springing’ back to life this month and we’ve squeezed in lots of local events. York Literature Festival has a great line up with the likes of Michael Palin, Mark Gatiss and Sue Perkins with many others. More details are on page 44. In Malton, get your outfits ready for dancing in the streets once again at the annual Cajun and Zydeco Festival on the 18th. Enjoy the coming of spring and let’s hope March ‘comes in like a lion’ and goes ‘out like a lamb’ like it should. Congratulations to Jane Burrows of Heworth for winning our January competition. Until next time…

WHAT IS “DOT PEEN” By Andy Smith, PCSO 5520 Every year, we recover hundreds and thousands of pounds worth of stolen property from the hands of criminals, but all too often there is no way of identifying its rightful owners. Being able to trace the ownership of the property not only helps people get the property back, but it can also provide evidence that is vital in securing convictions. Since July 2015, North Yorkshire Police have been pioneering dot peen property marking as a free crime prevention service across York and have marked more than 3500 items. Dot peen marking involves using a tungsten carbidetipped pin to indent an object with dots to create a visible, permanent unique number. The unique number will be entered onto the national Immobilise property register database, vastly increasing the chances that it will be reunited with its owner if it is lost or stolen. The marking is suitable for everything from mobile phones, laptops, tablets, bikes, garden tools, golf clubs, electrical items, farm equipment including horse saddles and fishing equipment. Security marking your property using a dot peen machine is an effective way of protecting yourself from being a victim of crime. Criminals will spot the security mark, and will quickly realise that the property is too difficult to sell on and when officers stop criminals they can check the item immediately for the mark which may lead to the item being seized and possible conviction. Now Christmas is a distant memory, and many of you or your family have new bikes, games consoles and mobile phones, I would encourage residents to contact us and arrange to have items security marked, and while we are with you we can offer security advice to protect your property or answer any questions you may have about the area where you live. Once we have your details it takes about a minute to mark your item. You can contact your local Neighbourhood policing team by e-mail snayorknorth@northyorkshirepolice.pnn.police. uk or follow the team on Facebook and Twitter @ snayorknorth @yorknorthpolice

Care home or your home – you DO have a choice Inevitably, with age, day-to-day tasks become more difficult to manage. And what happens to us at that point? Sadly, for many, it means leaving the homes we know and love to move into residential care. At the same time, sacrificing our independence for a predetermined routine. However, it needn’t be this way. In fact, it shouldn’t. Studies show that health and well-being is improved by being cared for in the comfort of our own homes. Live-in care is not a new concept; it’s been preserving people’s independence for years throughout England. Carers live in your home with you as your companion and assist with everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning and personal care meaning you live your life exactly how you choose. Carers also support those with more advanced needs so families can be confident their loved ones are safe, comfortable and getting the most out of life. Perhaps surprisingly, the cost of live-in care services is comparable and often more affordable than a residential care home.

“Typically, when people learn about live-in care their reaction is, ‘it sounds brilliant, but I’m sure I won’t be able to afford it’. When I explain that the cost can be half that of a care home, you see genuine hope in their eyes. You can’t put a price on that,” says Tahira Rahman of Promedica24 in Harrogate. Preserving yours and your loved ones dignity is a very simple, affordable reality. Care home or YOUR home? You do have a choice... We are Europe’s largest live-in care provider. Our expert care workers live in your home with you, 24-7 as a companion, a carer and a friend. Get the care you need, want and deserve, in the comfort of your own home. We offer a genuine alternative to residential care homes. Our mission is to give elderly and vulnerable people the opportunity to remain safely in their own homes by providing 24 hour, live-in care. Each carer is matched to you based on personality, hobbies and interests as well as overall care needs. This means there’s some common ground from day one and genuine friendships blossom. Maybe you’re cared for by a family member who just needs a break, or you need help getting back on your feet after a hospital stay. Perhaps you simply require a companion to help with day-to-day tasks such as cooking, cleaning and shopping. Our packages cover all this and range

from short term solutions through to ongoing support. We also offer complex care packages for those with more advanced care needs such as Dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s and palliative end-of-life care. Because our care packages are tailored to meet your individual needs, we ensure you retain as much independence and dignity as possible. The standard of care and attention to detail making sure Mum was well cared for and had all she needed was excellent. They took time to get to know Mum, listen to her stories, look at photos with her, learn her likes and dislikes and show an interest in Mum’s life experiences. Joanne L. - August 2016

Your one-to-one live-in companion/care package starts from just £695pw If you would like an informal chat or you would like to know more please get in touch with Tahira on 07967 239 086 or 01423 205 019 or visit www.promedica24.co.uk/harrogate-york

AN EXCITING PROPOSITION... ...from the all youth cast of Flying Ducks Youth Theatre, presenting Peter Pan the Musical at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre

Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th April Flying ducks are offering a discount on Thursday night or Saturday matinee performances. So if you fancy arranging to bring 10 or more people, you can have one ticket FREE.

A

ll the magic of the original story is brought to life in this production of the timeless classic for all the family. You can join Peter Pan, Wendy, John and Michael in the absolute adventure for every child who never wants to grow up and for every parent who wishes they never will. Peter Pan tells the classic tale of a young boy who refuses to grow up. On a quest to find stories with which to entertain his young cohorts in Neverland - an island refuge for “Lost Boys” - Peter returns to the real world and meets Wendy, Michael, and John Darling. The Darling children accompany Peter back to the magical Neverland, where they embark on an adventure they will never forget - the travelers learn to fly, come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook. Aaron Blanchard returns as the spritely Peter Pan and Tom Wilson as the fiendish Captain Hook, after their performances as Bugsy and Dandy Dan in 2016, and Faye Stainton steps up to the leading lady role as Peter Pan’s companion; mother of the lost boys and eldest of the Darling siblings, Wendy. J.M. Barrie’s masterful story shines especially brightly with a rich score that includes such beloved songs as “Come Away, Come Away,” and “Don’t say Goodbye”.” A delightful musical featuring singing pirates, daring swordfights, and fantastical make-believe, Peter Pan is a story that is filled with magic, delight, and just a fairy dusting of heartbreak. 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

HEALTH

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month which also increase breast cancer risk. Previous breast cancer doubles the risk, and pushes it even higher if you were diagnosed before age 40.

A

round 7,300 UK women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually and less than half are alive 5 years later. Yet early diagnosis can increase 5-year survival to 90%. That’s why March’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is vital. Reducing Risk: Taking the contraceptive pill, having children and breastfeeding are all proven to reduce ovarian cancer risk. Types of Ovarian Cancer About 90% of ovarian tumours are epithelial ovarian cancer, starting in the layer covering the ovary. Around 1 to 2% of ovarian cancers are germ cell cancers, formed in the ovary’s egg making cells. Rare stromal tumours and sarcomas can also affect the ovary and a few ovarian cancers are primary peritoneal carcinomas, which develop in the membrane around abdominal organs. Slow-growing borderline ovarian tumours do not grow into the stroma (supportive tissue of the ovary). Risk Factors Increasing age: Most ovarian cancer sufferers are postmenopause. Faulty genes: 5 to 15% of ovarian cancers are thought to be caused by an inherited faulty gene, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Infertility may increase risk, but fertility treatments are no longer believed to do so. There may be an increased risk of borderline ovarian tumours in infertile women treated with IVF. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is linked to less than 1% of ovarian cancers. Being overweight or tall: A BMI of 28 or over increases risk in premenopausal women but has no effect on risk in postmenopausal women. Taller women also have a higher risk. Endometriosis Using talcum powder between your legs is thought to increase ovarian cancer risk due to its irritant effect. Smoking: The longer you’ve smoked, the greater the risk increase for certain ovarian cancers. Symptoms Ovarian cancer symptoms aren’t always easy to identify and may be mistaken for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms in the early stages. However, if symptoms are new, severe, frequent or persistent (occurring most days for three weeks or more), you should see your GP immediately, although often, a less serious condition is to blame. Look out for: • Abdominal swelling and persistent bloating.

• Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain. • Difficulty eating, nausea and feeling full unusually quickly. • Back pain. • Needing to urinate more frequently. • Pain during sex. Remember that ovarian cancer is rare in women under 40, but that you should be particularly cautious if you are over 50 or have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Diagnosis Your GP may do some tests themselves or refer you straight to a specialist. You will be examined externally and internally to check for any lumps or swelling and will then have an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound scan. They’ll also do a blood test for CA125, a protein that’s elevated in half of women with early stage ovarian cancer and 90% of women with advanced ovarian cancer (although other pelvic conditions and pregnancy can cause elevated levels too). They may also order a CT or MRI scan. However, sometimes it’s impossible to diagnose ovarian cancer definitively without surgery. Treatment Most women with ovarian cancer will require surgery. If your cancer is diagnosed early, you may only need the affected ovary and fallopian tube removed. More advanced cancers may need more extensive surgery, plus chemotherapy before and after, to treat cancerous cells and reduce reoccurrence risk.

LUDICROUS LAWS BY MARY MAHON

America: the land of freedom and prosperity? With every passing day, American politics looks like they are clawing themselves away from Democratic legislation, to alternative Republican ideas. The ‘economic burden’ of Obamacare is being diminished, the right to abortion is being stripped, and there is a much stricter immigration control. Although shocking changes are taking place in America right now, they still have a long way to go before they rival some of the world’s weirdest laws… Some laws are so extraordinary you wouldn’t believe they are true. They just make you smile. Literally. In Milan, legislation requires that citizens must smile at all times - if not, you definitely won’t be smiling when you receive a hefty fine. Similarly, some laws are so odd you question their origin. For example, why in Arizona is it illegal for donkeys to sleep in a bathtub after 7pm, or in Florida, why can’t you pass wind in public after 6pm? Although it’s reassuring that you won’t literally be penalised under these laws, some existing legislation is actually very worrying… The fact that there is no minimum age for marriage in Saudi Arabia meant that in 2008, an 8-year-old girl was denied a divorce against her 58-year-old husband. An ancient 1800s law states that in Arkansas, a husband can beat his wife once a month if deemed necessary, and in India, a man who is in debt can offer up his wife until it is paid off. It balances out however; for each ludicrous law, there are laws of common sense - despite how good the food may taste, it is illegal in Chicago to eat in an establishment which is on fire! – and laws which completely contradict themselves! In Britain, you can’t die in the Houses of Parliament (or I’m sure you’ll face extreme consequences), and from the country that brought us Sumo wrestling, it is illegal to be overweight! In combination, our world has an amalgamation of very strange laws, where if you united them, we would have a very upside-down world! Yet regardless of what our laws dictate, I believe that primarily, our hearts and minds are our true guides. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Angkor Wat - Cambodia

F

rom the 9th to the 15th century, the Khmer dynasty ruled one of the largest kingdoms in southeast Asia. Today Angkor, their ‘capital city’, is a unique history book highlighting the different styles and cultures which evolved over the 300 years it took to complete. It’s a World Heritage site, a ‘lost city’ claiming hundreds of temples and ruins scattered in a vast archaeological park. Most iconic is Angkor Wat, the best preserved temple and the largest religious structure in the world. It was built in the 12th century to honour the Hindu god Vishnu, was later used for Buddhist worship, and is featured on the national flag. Rising like a dream above the plain, it’s the finest example of Khmer classical architecture, stylish and harmonious with towers and colonnades reflected in a lotus pond. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially in the soft light of dawn tinged in silver and

32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

gold. The sandstone glows, almost surreal, birds stir in the trees and monks in saffron robes meditate at the water’s edge. The causeway leading to the entrance is still deserted and for the early pilgrims, this is a sublime vision of heaven as lotus-shaped towers mirror the five peaks of Mount Meru, the home of the gods. The first westerner to set eyes on Angkor Wat was a Portuguese monk in the 16th century, who spoke of ‘a building like no other in the world…with all the refinements the human genius could conceive.’ But the gods must have played a part for whatever the time of day, the temple is pure magic, shimmering in the cool of the morning, burning in the midday heat, silhouetted against the darkening sky in the last rays of the setting sun. So from morning to dusk, the visitors pour in, spellbound as they shuffle around the lower gallery, marvelling at the basreliefs stretching for 800 metres around the central temple and

regarded as the greatest artistic legacy in Angkor. There are epic legends and battle scenes but most highly praised is ‘The Churning of the Ocean Milk’, where devils and gods fight for immortality, the latter led to victory by some of the 3,000 heavenly nymphs, or apsara, found in Angkor Wat. They also line the walls on the second level, encouraging meditation before the near vertical climb to the top, an act which requires unflinching concentration and a very slow descent. Visitors clamber down backwards and one can’t help wondering how the high priest ever managed to preserve his dignity. But when you’re up there, the world is at your feet, the courtyards, the galleries, the entrance gates at each cardinal point, two of them large enough to accommodate elephants. The oversized moats glisten like oceans, the outer walls mark the edge of the world and the forest spreads as far as you can see, hiding more vestiges from a glorious past. It’s a sacred replica of the universe, they say, and you can feel the vibes in the air. Back on the ground where city and palace once stood, cicadas whir in the trees and lizards bask in the hot sun. ‘Close your eyes’, whisper the guides, ‘and feel the past clinging to the stones.’ Then for a moment or two, you step back in time, sitting in the Royal Court, bewitched by the wonderful apsara and dreaming of the legendary seven-headed snake who built a rainbow bridge to link heaven and earth by the lofty towers of Angkor Wat.

IS YOUR BUSINESS READY FOR AUTO ENROLMENT??

Y

ou may have seen the adverts on TV with groups of workers shouting “We’re all in!” but what exactly are they going on about? Well, Auto Enrolment is the biggest change to workplace pensions in over a decade, and is basically the process of employers enrolling their workers in to a pension scheme. If you’re a business owner and employ people, you will be receiving a letter from the Pensions Regulator on what you are expected to do.

What is Auto-enrolment? Auto-enrolment is the Governments way of encouraging people to save into a pension, and it requires businesses to have a work based pension scheme. Qualifying employees are then “automatically” enrolled and the employee and employer both pay contributions into it. Qualifying employees are those who are aged between 22 and state pension age, and earn over £10,000 per year.

Will Auto-enrolment affect my business? If you own a business and employ people then this will affect you, and you will need to make sure you comply with the strict rules and deadlines set by the Pensions Regulator. However, if you own your own limited company and are the only director and employee, it may not apply to your business.

What do I need to do? WHEN – find out your Staging Date – the date by which you need to comply with the new rules – this is

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

set by the Pensions Regulator and depends on how many employees you have. Most small businesses staging date will be between 2016 and 2017. It is recommended you start planning 12 months in advance. HOW – you need to find a suitable Pension Scheme. For small businesses there are a handful of providers, including NEST (set up by the Government specifically for Auto-enrolment). The scheme you chose will depend on cost, quality and investment profile. WHO – once you have your scheme, your need to: Assess your workforce – consider who are qualifying employees, and who needs to be automatically enrolled. Communicate with your workforce – tell all your employees about the pension changes and explain their options. Employees who don’t qualify may still be eligible to join. Automatically enrol your qualifying employees – the relevant employees join the pension scheme. Pay contributions into the pension – minimum contributions must be paid into the scheme from both employer and employee combined.

Do employees have to join? Qualifying employees have to be automatically enrolled but can chose to “opt out” and leave the scheme within a month, and receive a refund of any contributions.

If you employ people and want to know more on how Auto-enrolment affects you, or how we can help run your scheme, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@ pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

HOW TO HEDGE by Pippa Greenwood

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant one. Prepare the area by forking the soil over and removing large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. Fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost if the soil is either very sandy or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. At this time of year you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and then carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-

root plants, plant them immediately. It is essential to plant and space the plants correctly, to both achieve the desired effect and ensure the plants establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should generally be spaced about 3045cm apart. For a thicker or denser hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, but positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE the roots and so allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants: • Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge. • Thuja - stunning conifer for year round colour. • Beech - deciduous plant. Both purple and greenleafed forms. • Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge, but more prone to mildew than beech. • Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped regularly. • Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty creamywhite flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge. • Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. • Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny, good for wildlife. • Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes – vigorous!

Alzheimer’s Society shout out for 1500 volunteers for Tour de Yorkshire partnership

Alzheimer’s Society, official charity partner for Tour de Yorkshire 2017, is appealing for over one thousand volunteers to support fundraising activity at this year’s cycling spectacular. The Yorkshire fundraising team (pictured at the launch of this year’s route) are recruiting volunteer collectors to raise funds along the race route, taking place Friday 28th- Sunday 30th April. They are also seeking charity champions to help coordinate fundraising activity and inspire their local community to get behind Alzheimer’s Society for the event.

Aimee Maguet, corporate fundraiser for the North, said “Volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society at this year’s Tour is a fantastic way to get to the heart of the race day action. We have already had a fantastic response from supporters wishing to volunteer, but we need hundreds more people willing to donate just a few hours over the race weekend. “You will be part of an amazing team, uniting to raise vital funds and awareness for the many thousands of people affected by dementia across Yorkshire.” Every volunteer will receive support and materials to help them in their role. All funds raised from the Tour will go directly towards improving the lives of an estimated 67,000

people living with dementia across Yorkshire and Humber. Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. We work tirelessly to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure for dementia. We provide expert information, training, and support services to all those who need our help. We are creating a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice. Visit www.alzheimers.org.uk/ tourdeyorkshire to register as a volunteer fundraiser. If you would like to volunteer your services as a charity champion for the Tour, please contact Julie Lee on 07484513640 or julie.lee@ alzheimers.org.uk

What with Dry January and now Sugar Free February it seems as though we are under constant pressure to dramatically alter our diets with a free guilt trip built in when we fail. Good health, oral or otherwise is not about denial it is about balance. If you are very overweight or gradually increasing in girth then abruptly reducing your food to starvation rations will undoubtedly help you to lose weight, sadly when you start to eat again your body will lay down fat in case you starve yourself again. As a dentist its very annoying when it is recommended to eat ‘little and often’ this may keep your metabolism burning however it can have a drastic effect on your teeth. Each time we take in food or drink our teeth are under attack for about 90 minutes, so most dentist will recommend 3 meals with 1 snack per day. Any drinks in between should be sugar free and have a neutral pH. Over the years there have been a variety of craze diets which have thankfully fallen out of favour, anyone remember the PLJ diet ? Your dentist will as it caused serious dental problems. I think there a few similarly acidic or highly coloured juice diets still around and these have the same potential to cause tooth decay and dental erosion. By restricting how often you eat, unless you increase your portion sizes significantly you should lose weight without causing damage to your teeth, combine this with a bit more exercise and the weight should gradually reduce. So you don’t need to cut sugar out completely unless you really want to, you just need to keep it for mealtimes! SECOND YORK CHOIR FESTIVAL - BIGGER & BETTER billing. Apart from York based choirs there are choirs from Haxby, Easingwold, Boroughbridge & Tadcaster. There are 3 youth choirs, including one of last year’s participants Tutti Amici as well as newcomers “York Light Youth” and “Queen Ethelburga’s College Choir”.

2016 saw Joseph Rowntree Theatre stage the first York Community Choir Festival with a mix of choirs performing over 3 concerts and it was deemed such a success by both audiences and the choirs that they were all calling for more before the last concert was over! Not only that, but other choirs from near and far heard of the event and the organisers had to field numerous requests for a bigger festival in 2017. So, the 2017 festival (March 29 – April 1) will feature FIVE concerts, each with FOUR CHOIRS sharing the

hank you very much for collecting all your aluminium foil, drinks cans and cables in 2016. The totals have been added and we have collected a massive 791kg! This is a lot more than in previous years. For those interested in the breakdown; 154kg foil, 355kg aluminium cans, 120kg steel cans and scrap and 162kg cables were collected. This raised £317.80 and we received £211.30 in donations from people dropping their scrap metal off directly to Clancey’s at Murton. In addition, Christmas charity collections brought in another £228.94. A grand total of £758.04 for SNAPPY! The collections will continue throughout 2017 and metal recycling prices are improving

We are continuing to make good money for SNAPPY from your rubbish and it’s not going into landfill so we are helping the environment too. Please can you make sure there are no food tins in your collection boxes as these are steel. You can check your drinks cans with a fridge magnet – if it sticks the can is steel so needs to go into your council recycling box. In addition, please no plastic – these are the coffee and tea packets, crisp bags and biscuit wrappers and pill strips. Just because they are shiny doesn’t

SHORT STORY

THE FRIENDS OF YARROW AVENUE by Jackie Brewster

“What time do you call this?” Gladys was straightening papers at her mahogany desk when Jean came shuffling into the study. “We can’t have dawdling the Press are coming.” “Sorry,” said Jean, “I just bumped into Mr Pike at number three.”

she’d finally get the recognition she deserved. “He said that given where they’d been planted,” Jean settled herself at the card table which doubled as her desk, “he thought they were offensive.”

“How’s he?” Gladys asked.

“Offensive!” Gladys scoffed. “Who could possibly be offended by tulips?”

“He’s got these temporary dentures,” Jean said. “They’re absolutely huge. He reminds me of that old cartoon dog, what’s his name?”

“I know!” Jean picked up her stapler as though she’d never seen one before. “Have you walked down to admire them yet?”

“False teeth, whatever the size, are hardly an excuse for leaving his bin out,” Gladys muttered tartly. “Did he have anything to say for himself?”

Gladys had not; she preferred to drive along the avenue. Her role was purely organisational. It was Jean, as secretary, who’d gone out in the freezing fog with a dibber to plant them last Autumn.

“Nothing much.” Jean began unwinding her scarf. “Just some remarks about the tulips.” “Remarks?” Gladys sat upright. “What sort of remarks?” One thing she’d discovered since appointing herself Chair of the Friends of Yarrow Avenue was that there were always remarks. She’d thought her neighbours would be glad of a cheerful reminder that it was time to take down their outdoor Christmas lights, or attend to the guttering. Who wouldn’t be glad of a note suggesting that they tackle their privet? All she got was remarks. Things would change after today. A man from the Gazette was coming to photograph the tulips they’d planted on the avenue’s grass verge. She’d had her hair done specially. With the right publicity, Gladys imagined, 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“What’s wrong with them?” Gladys asked. “I imagine he’s got a wonderful view from his bay window.” “He has,” Jean said. “They look ever so colourful.” “So why are they offensive?” Gladys asked. “They’re not. At least, I don’t think they are.” “What aren’t you telling me?” Gladys narrowed her eyes. “Don’t bother taking your coat off, we’re going to have a look.” Gladys strode through the hall with Jean hurrying behind her. “At first, I decided to plant them so they spelled GOOD DAY!” Jean said. Gladys froze. “Please tell me you didn’t?” She imagined some dreadful municipal park planting scheme.

“I didn’t,” Jean said. Gladys breathed a sigh of relief, and set off down the garden path. “I just planted GOO.” Jean stammered. “I see.” Gladys marched purposefully towards the corner of the avenue. “So the tulips just say GOO?” “Well no,” Jean continued. “I remembered you’d said we should promote our residents’ association. So after GOO, I began to spell out FY – you know for the…” “Friends of Yarrow Avenue,” Gladys interrupted. A little tacky, she thought, but at least people would know who was responsible for the tulips. “Yes,” Jean said, catching her breath. “Only I ran out of bulbs before I could do the A.” “Please tell me my flowers don’t spell the word GOOFY?” Gladys cried. They turned the corner to see poor Mr Pike and his temporary false teeth with the photographer from the Gazette. “Goofy!” Jean laughed cheerfully, “Yes, that was the cartoon dog’s name.” The front page of the Gazette the next day was indeed all about the Friends of Yarrow Avenue and their tulips, finally giving Gladys exactly the type of recognition she deserved.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MOTORING

By James Baggott

First Ride: Honda VFR1200F GT DCT love it like I never expected I would. It’s really that good. In fact, the VFR1200F has won me over in more ways than one. It helps that it’s got a glorious engine. The liquid cooled V4 lump produces 173bhp and is good for 165mph. It sounds wonderful and as the revs increase your helmet is filled with an intoxicating warble. You’ll find it quite addictive.

Take a quick glance at the handlebars of this Honda VFR1200F and you can tell something is missing – but it often takes a while to work out exactly what. Even hard-nosed biker friends will struggle to spot that what this sports tourer is lacking is a clutch lever. You see, this is Honda’s DCT automatic model, a sort of giant, grown-up twist and go scooter that’s not nearly as horrifying to ride as it might sound. Most bikers will find the idea of losing control of the gears and letting a computer do the shifting for them a cardinal sin – and I’ll happily admit I was one of them – but then I learned to live with the Honda, and you know what: I think most riders will find it hard to go back to a ‘normal’ bike again. Hop on board the Honda and you’ll find the semi-automatic transmission doesn’t feel as far removed from a standard gearbox after all. The rider selects drive at the push of a button on the handlebars and that familiar ‘clonk’ of a bike’s gear being engaged is still apparent. However, pulling away requires no slipping of the clutch or fumbling with your feet – you simply let the bike take care of swapping cogs and concentrate on riding. If you’re feeling lively, you can do it yourself by prodding up and down buttons on the handlebars – but chances are you probably won’t. That paragraph won’t convince many bikers to change to a DCT any time soon, but I can assure you as a devout gear shifter I’ve quickly learned to 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

On the road it feels stable and solid to ride. The confidence it inspires in the corners right from the off makes it an easy bike to get on with, and one you’ll want to use whatever the weather. Rarely do you ride a bike that feels as stable in the wet as it does in the dry, but this Honda certainly does. The VFR is practical too. Our test model features luggage that comes as standard on the GT model, which consists of a top box and panniers (£725 optional extra on other models). These are easy to operate with the ignition key and fit everything you’ll need for a weekend away, or will cope admirably with an ad-hoc trip to the supermarket. The heated grips (costing £250 usually but standard on this GT) are a welcome addition too. They warm up quickly and lightly toast your fingers on colder morning rides. The usual excellent Honda build quality is very much apparent. The fit and finish of the switchgear is beautiful and certainly feels like it justifies the £14,599 price tag. The shaft drive is an added bonus – it’s refined and convenient, reducing on cleaning rituals (especially with those classy white wheels) and cuts down on the need for maintenance. There’s a lot to love about the VFR1200F. Once you get over the initial shock of not having to grab a clutch – and believe me you’ll go for it more than once before you remember it’s not there – then the VFR really is easy to fall for. Practical, comfortable, incredibly swift and great fun – it’s very close to being the perfect all-rounder you’ve always promised yourself.

Oscar is a lovely boy with lots of energy, he needs an active home where he will get long walks to tire him out. An adult only home will suit him best, due to his bouncy nature. Oscar loves humans so much, he is looking for a home where he won’t be left alone too long as he can get upset when he’s left on his own, he will take some time to settle into a home but our behaviourist will offer help and support with this. Luna came to us as her owners could no longer take care of her, she is a very sweet natured girl who loves life and is full of fun. She will need some basic training but she is so eager to please that we feel she will learn in no time. Luna is not used to being left on her own for long periods so we are looking for a home where she will not be left for too long. Luna will be best suited to being the only pet in the home and could live with children of junior school age.

Lovely lady Ginny was found living rough in someone’s garden, so she’s more than ready to get her rump settled into a proper home. She is a very happy little cat and loves to be around people. Nothing makes her purr louder than when she’s sitting on your lap enjoying some fuss – she’s greedy for the attention! Three year old Ginny has had some problems with her skin, more than likely caused by a serious flea infestation combined with a flea allergy. Don’t worry though she is now free of the pesky blighters and on the road to recovery. Ginny is on medication to help prevent her skin issues reoccurring and any new owner will need to be able to continue this treatment to keep her happy and well. CATRIONA’S RIDE FOR THEIR LIVES YORK 2017 I’m going to be racing in front of 25,000 people for Macmillan Cancer Support because I want to support and promote their amazing work in memory of my Grandma, Doreen Palmer.

OK, it seemed like a perfectly sensible thing to do when I filled in the application form in December 2016... I have been fortunate enough to be selected as 1 of 12 riders to take part in a 1 mile 1 furlong flat race round the Knavesmire at York Racecourse on June 17th 2017 to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, kindly sponsored by Best Western Hotels. Now, I have never sat on a racehorse before and this event will be in front of a grandstand full of 25,000 people at the end of a normal race day, riding a fully fledged racehorse! I lost my Grandma to pancreatic cancer in February 2016 and I had close dealings with Macmillan Cancer Support during the difficult period from her diagnosis to her departing this world. As a fitting tribute to my Grandma, who worked for Coral Bookmakers for many years, I am excited to be taking part in the Best Western Hotels and Macmillan “Ride of Their Lives” 2017. Please check my Just Giving page for updates as I share my journey with you through the 4 months of intensive training and learning that lie ahead. It could be rather entertaining.
