elcome to our March edition… Well, I trust that you’ve survived those miserable winter months and are readying yourselves to welcome in the green shoots and longer days of spring! To help brighten the spirit, this month we’re focussing on spring gardens and we have plenty of local businesses to help you make the most of your outside space. As a small business ourselves that works with many other businesses and community groups, big and small, we have a good insight into what’s happening across the area and we are proud to work with a great diversity of people from all walks of life. Diversity makes our lives richer and we are particularly reminded of this on International Women’s Day on 8th March. This year’s International campaign is called ‘Better the balance, better the world’, and it focusses on gender balance in all aspects of life from government to business, media and sport. The message does seem to be getting through in the UK as a report from the Federation of Small Businesses identifies many positive changes, furthering year-on-year the significant contribution made by women in small and medium-sized businesses and to the UK economy. See page 32 for more information and to see some of our local businesses run by inspiring business women. This month we said a sad goodbye to Imogen from the Handy Mag team. Having worked with us on and off since she was 13 (now 22), doing everything from admin and deliveries to designing our website and business planning, she is off to

NEW MONTHLY MARKET IN SHERIFF HUTTON First market Sunday 17th March
W
ith traditional market stalls outside and smaller stalls indoors, the market will host an array of local, independent traders selling a variety of goods; including food, locally grown fruit and vegetables, crafts and textiles, pet products and much more. Louise Chandler, who lives and runs a local business in the village, came up with the idea of having a regular village market after seeing the success of other markets in other local areas. After testing the waters by putting an advert in the village newsletter, a group of 11 villagers with a variety of ages and backgrounds, along with Louise as Chair, have worked together as the village market committee to organise and promote the new Sheriff Hutton Village Market. The market aims to benefit local causes, projects and organisations in two ways. Firstly, any funds raised from stallholder fees after costs are covered will be distributed amongst local projects and organisations. Secondly, refreshments will be provided in the Village Hall on market days and the committee are encouraging local clubs and groups
to take turns in providing the refreshments allowing them to raise money to benefit their groups. Aside from the benefit they hope to provide for voluntary groups and projects within the village, the committee also hope the markets will help to enhance community spirit. They are very keen for the whole village to embrace this new idea, and hope that the monthly markets will become a regular part of village life. The first market will be held on Sunday 17th March at Sheriff Hutton Village Hall, York Road, Sheriff Hutton, York YO60 6RA. There will be stalls inside and outside the village hall, and the market will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm. For dates, and a full list of stallholders please visit www.shvm.co.uk.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR BLUEWATER BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS THANKS TO MAJOR SHOWROOM UPDATE It doesn’t matter whether you have loads of ideas or none at all, Bluewater help design your new bathroom or kitchen...
C
reating the perfect bathroom or kitchen is not always a straightforward process and the prospect of upheaval can put homeowners off starting a big project. Bluewater Bathrooms and Kitchens has earned a reputation in York for being the go-to company when it comes to home improvements. Now, with a brand new showroom at Clifton Moor, Bluewater is making a stand for independent, family-run businesses. The company has gone from strength to strength and in December completed the new showroom which really spotlights the company’s talents for quality and craftsmanship. It is really important to plan every tiny detail of a kitchen or bathroom fit, as you will want it all to be over within the shortest possible timescale. Everything from measurements, electricals, plastering, tiling, fitting and finishing needs to be carefully curated. That’s not to mention the intricate design process and actually picking the perfect suites. That’s where Bluewater Bathrooms and Kitchens really come in to their own. Bluewater’s full fitting service covers every aspect of a bathroom or kitchen installation, saving you the time, the cost, and the headache of trying to do it yourself. Being a family business, Bluewater Bathrooms and Kitchens relies on having the upper hand when it comes to customer service. The team is friendly and welcoming, with no pushy sales staff, so you know you are being guided through the process with a friendly expert at your side. It all began when fully qualified Bathroom fitters Adrian Lount and Pete Reynolds often found 18 | Handy Mag | March 2019
themselves working together on the same job, and they were so impressed with each other’s work ethic and attention to detail they often recommended each other for work. The first Bluewater showroom opened in 2009. After only 4 years they became such a success Adrian and Pete were already looking for bigger premises. They didn’t have to move far when space became available just a stone’s throw away on Auster Road, Clifton Moor, York. It doesn’t matter whether you have loads of ideas or none at all, Bluewater help design your new bathroom or kitchen by taking accurate measurements of the room and using state-of-theart computer software to plan a layout. You can take an impressive virtual reality tour around the space and take home some fantastic 3D pictures. If you prefer to install your new kitchen or bathroom yourself, or you already have someone else in mind, Bluewater can supply all that you need, going that extra mile to make sure everything is perfect. Short Story Laundry Day “Give me a hand with this would you?” Danny had been sitting anxiously on the park bench. He turned to a lady with a mass of wild grey hair struggling to throw a length of thin rope over the branch of a nearby oak tree. “Me?” Danny said. “Yes you, you’re a tall lad,” she called, unravelling the rope. “I want to tie this end to this tree, and the other end to that big one over there.” Danny was glad of the distraction. His cousin had set him up on a blind date with her friend Rebecca, and he wasn’t at all sure what to expect. Under the lady’s watchful eye, he tied up the rope so that it was taut between the two trees. “We’re going to peg out my washing,” she said, smiling. He then saw a wicker basket filled with damp laundry on a rock behind her. “It’s only bedding. There’s no unmentionables, so don’t get your knickers in a twist.” “Do you always dry your washing in the park?” Danny asked.. “Aren’t you worried that someone might steal it?” “Who’d want my threadbare sheets?” the lady cackled, unravelling a flowery duvet cover. “It’s my First Day of Spring ritual, they always smell lovely after a blast of country air.” “Doesn’t anybody ever stop you?” he asked. “Like who?” She took a couple of pegs from a bag. “Air’s free, isn’t it?” “I suppose,” Danny agreed, looking at his watch. “What’s up?” she said. “Stood you up, has she?”
There’s no unmentionables, so don’t get your knickers in a twist “Well fancy that.” She coyly took the handkerchief from him. “Bet you weren’t expecting me.” Danny gulped. It was clear he’d been the victim of his cousin’s cruel practical joke. “You seem like a really nice person,” he began, “and you’ve got some very interesting laundry ideas…” “Thank you,” the lady said admiring her line of washing. “You seem quite a nice lad yourself.” “But I’m worried about the age gap,” Danny continued, choosing his words carefully. “I’m not sure we’d have a lot in common.” The lady brushed her hair out of her eyes and squinted at him. “I have to disagree,” she said, and winked. “There’s one thing we’ve got in common.” “What’s that?” Danny said warily; he’d hoped she would be better at taking the hint. “My granddaughter Rebecca,” she laughed, as a girl of Danny’s age walked towards them.
“I hope not.” Danny helped her straighten the sheets.
“Hello Nanna.” She kissed the lady on the cheek.
As she pegged the last pillow case a small scrap of white fabric fluttered to the ground.
“Hello Rebecca. This is Danny. He’s been very chivalrous.”
Danny picked it up before it could get muddy. It was a handkerchief, and across one corner was neatly embroidered the name ‘Rebecca’.
Danny felt his face burning. She patted his shoulder kindly. “I don’t think you need a chaperone.” She handed him the basket. “Just bring in my washing when it’s ready.”
“That’s funny,” he said, frowning, “the girl I’m waiting for is called Rebecca.”

Technology is my coping method
A IN STOCK We keep a huge amount of stock for you to take away today!
round me right now are at least 6 different pieces of technology: my TV, 2 games consoles, my smartphone, my wireless keyboard I am currently using to write this article and my tablet, currently sat charging. Now that’s a lot of technology, even for me. But in my most urgent times, it might not have been a hug or bar of chocolate I’ve needed, it’s been a slice of escapism into a different world, a music album or a film I’ve craved the most... From the first telephone call in 1876, to electronic TV’s being sold in America in 1938 and all the way to the original revolutionary iPhone being released on June 29th 2007, turning some of us into “screen zombies” (at least they would be of no threat in the event of an actual apocalypse). Technology is everywhere and is something that has revolutionised our day to day lives for better or worse - for me, it’s the former.
FREE DESIGN SERVICE
Professional imaging design to help you create beautiful rooms.
Through my life, facing medical obstacles with no breaks in-between has been all I’ve ever known. I’ve reached the point where I’m just counting down the days till the next diagnosis. Whether it’s that or I’m having a rough day, I’ll dive head first into gaming, bingeing films and putting Coldplay on. Now it’s never been easier for me to “escape”.

Sometimes for me, just the act of talking to my friends online, be that over a headset or through social media, for an hour will make the past dreadful 23 hours disappear from my mind. I might not be even doing anything, I’ll be laying down staring at my ceiling laughing from a bad joke or a mate getting (hilariously) angry at a level he’s been stuck on for hours. All in all, technology has been a great lifeline for me. Your coping method might be as simple as a cup of tea under a blanket, but for me, it’s been my 6+ pieces of technology that has “My Coping Method” written on them.

DB ALL AND END ALL By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at Pen Life Associates
The world of pensions changed dramatically. You don’t have to look hard to see the words ‘Final Salary’ and ‘Pension Transfer’ in the same sentence. The floodgates have opened. Countless previously untouchable pension schemes can now be transferred into personal pension schemes at people’s will. According to the Financial Times, the value of transfers out of Final Salary (aka Defined Benefit or DB) schemes into Defined Contribution (aka Personal Pensions or DC) schemes jumped from £7.9bn in 2016 to £20.8bn in 2017. Let’s rewind. For decades, a whole host of employers (like Aviva, British Steel, The Post Office, Nestlé and most of the big banks) offered their employees ‘Final Salary’ pension schemes. The benefits were calculated as a percentage of salary. So retirees could go into retirement with a guaranteed, inflationproofed pension for life. Fast-forward to 2015 to the Pensions Freedom. You can now take as much as you like out of a personal pension without restriction. Whereas most benefits from final salary schemes can only be taken as an annual income. And, where most final salary schemes die when you/your spouse dies, personal pensions can be passed down to future generations – Inheritance Tax free! Plus, the current values of a lot of these final salary schemes are eye-wateringly high. And all this means is that transferring out of a final salary scheme for some people is a big no brainer. But making such a decision certainly isn’t black and white. And it definitely isn’t easy. Every individual has their own set of unique circumstances. What’s right for one isn’t right for the other. It so evenly split that we actually advise as many people not to transfer as we advise to transfer – and once you’ve chosen what you want to do that’s it. You can’t go back. It’s permanent. Read on to find out how you can sign up to attend our free presentation. You won’t regret investing some time into your future.

omen-owned businesses now contribute an incredible £105bn to the UK economy. So, as part of International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we’re celebrating the achievements of all female entrepreneurs in the area and supporting the next generation.
• Achieving credibility for the business (37%) • Lack of confidence (22%) Obstacles like these are limiting women’s ability to start, run and grow their business. It’s a huge potential loss for the economy. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) published a report in November 2018 called ‘Supporting Women’s Enterprise in the UK: The Economic Case’, which revealed an increase in both the ...only 22% of small and economic contribution and employment generated by medium sized businesses are women-owned businesses.

However, it also revealed there are still 2.7 million women who want to open a business – but haven’t. And only 22% of small and medium sized businesses are majority owned by women. Why?
Research from the FSB’s previous report (‘Women in Enterprise: The Untapped Potential’) explores how women face the typical challenges of setting up a small business, such as cash flow and access to finance, but also additional challenges that are specific to them, including: • Balancing work and family life (40%) 32 | Handy Mag | March 2019
The FSB’s report called on the Government to recognise the economic contribution by women and build on this with career advice, role models and access to business support and finance.
More needs to be done to help women and lead the next generation of female entrepreneurs. Through long-term business support, vocational education, better advice, mentoring and statutory Maternity Allowance for the self-employed, more women could have the skills and confidence to set up their own business. In the report, a quarter of female business owners highlighted access to finance as a key challenge. So, more is being done to make women aware of the full

KEEP SAFE THIS SPRING by Anna Maxwell, C2 Safety
A
s signs of spring begin to appear we begin to think about tidying up the garden. Gardening will involve lifting, lugging, shuffling and shunting of boxes, barrows and brooms. All these activities require physical effort and it is easy to cause an injury such as a strain or pull, and, all too commonly, a bad back. Whatever your plans are you should always consider safe manual handling techniques to help reduce the chance of an injury (which could affect your ability to work). Some basic planning can be the difference between an injury and a job well done. Be mindful of your own strength and physical capability. The weight you can safely carry changes depending on where you carry it in relation to your body. You cannot lift as much if you are holding it above your head, are sitting down or are having to twist for example. Consider the size and weight of the item and reduce it by splitting it up and taking several trips. If it cannot be split then a trolley will help. If you do not have a trolley then ask for assistance from a friend or colleague (this is known as Team Lifting). Check the route you intend to carry the load and make sure there are no trip hazards, tight spaces or things you could get caught up on such as trees, hose pipes, cables or other equipment. Gloves will improve your grip when lifting and also protect fingers and hands from scuffs and scrapes. When picking up a load you should always start from a squat and keep a straight back and stand up through your legs. Don’t bend over with straight legs and a straight back as this is a fast-track to a back injury. Always carry the weight as close to your body as possible around waist/chest level as this is where you are strongest. And when you put the load down don’t drop it! Musculoskeletal injuries caused by poor manual handling account for more than one-third of all work-related illnesses reported to the HSE each year. Employers must provide training and information in the workplace to help workers prevent injuries and this knowledge could save you from injuries in the home too. C2 Safety can provide effective Manual Handling training and Health and Safety support to all types of businesses and organisations from our offices in North Yorkshire. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

SILVER VERSUS WHITE FILLINGS...WHAT’S NEW?
Y
ou may find that when you next go to the dentist there are some changes to the type of filling you are given. In agreement with an international treaty, we are working to reduce the amount of mercury being released by Christine Parker into the environment. Some people BDS (GDC 72136) may be concerned that amalgam fillings, which do contain mercury, are unsafe and could affect their health. In fact, studies have found that there is more mercury in cow and formula milk than in the breastmilk of mothers who have fillings. I would like to allay any fears. Silver fillings have a long history of safety (150 years) and whilst they might not look as pretty as white fillings, they offer long service and can be placed in very heavily filled teeth. It’s not a great idea to get them removed unless there is a clinical need. When silver fillings are placed or removed, a small amount of silver amalgam is released into the waste. When mercury, from any source, enters the environment it can eventually enter our oceans and this is where the problem starts. Microorganisms convert the previously stable mercury into methyl mercury which is easily absorbed by fish. This is why the government recommends pregnant or breastfeeding women limit their fish consumption to 2 portions a week. White fillings are primarily made of plastic material which is set in the mouth and we do not yet have enough long term studies to establish all their risks. They have been thoroughly tested but they are in no way better than silver fillings. So don’t worry about your silver fillings and if you want to make your fillings last as long as possible book an appointment and we’ll show you how. Technical references are taken from the Dental Protection webinar regarding the Phasing Down of Amalgam. Jan 19.

Lisbon
wept by the Atlantic breeze on the banks of the river Tagus, Lisbon is a lovely city where beyond the tree-lined avenues and elegant squares, the past lingers in myriad nooks and crannies. Old or new, quiet or bustling, the Portuguese capital is full of contrasts and always surprising. At the foot of the ‘seven hills’, Baixa, the lower town, is the main commercial hub, rebuilt in neoclassical style by the Marquis of Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. At the heart of it all is the spacious Rossio Square, beautifully paved in wave-like patterns of limestone and basalt. Fountains, flower sellers, cafés and pastry shops, it’s a place to relax and watch the world go by. Restaurants and boutiques line the popular Augusta Street, while beyond the Triumphal Arch the vast Plaça do Comércio opens out on to the river, spanned by the 25th of April suspension bridge. Inspired by the Golden Gate in San Francisco, the bridge commemorates the peaceful return to democracy in 1974 when the population muzzled the soldiers’ rifles with carnations. Stylish façades, blue mosaics glinting in the sunshine, churches, museums and gardens: there’s plenty to explore in the centre, but sooner or later visitors come across the intriguing Santa Justa Elevator, a neo-gothic lift embellished with filigree, wood panels and brass fittings. Built in 1902 by an apprentice of Eiffel, it takes you up to the western heights of Bairro Alto overlooking the low town and 38 | Handy Mag | March 2019
river. Sleepy in the day, lively at night, this old district loves bohemian life. On the eastern side of town, the traditional Alfama district clambers up the slopes, just like the Kasbah set up long ago by Moorish invaders. Tightly packed houses, steep winding lanes, narrow passageways and hidden squares, it’s a nostalgic place where old-fashioned trams rattle on the cobbles and the melancholy sound of Fado guitars drifts in dark tavernas. Up on the top is Castelo de Sao Jorge, the citadel built by the Moors then turned into a royal palace. It’s well worth the climb, for up on the battlements one can enjoy the most magnificent panorama over Lisbon and the river Tagus on its way to Belem, where caravels once set off to explore the world. At the mouth of the river, Belem claims some of the finest buildings financed by the golden Age of Discoveries, including two UNESCO sites, the grand Jeronimos Monastery, with its turrets and archways mirrored in a pond, and – also commissioned by Manuel I – the fortified yet delicate Belem Tower lapped by ocean waves. But most dramatic perhaps is the Monument to the Discoveries, built in 1960 and rising 52 metres above a huge mariner’s compass. Shaped like a caravel about to sail, it is flanked by statues of maritime heroes, among them Vasco de Gama, and led on the prow by the great pioneer Henry the Navigator. Solange Hando

SOLOISTS BEYOND COMPARE LINED UP FOR CASTLE HOWARD PROMS 2019 Saturday 3 August 2019
“I’m delighted to be returning for the Castle Howard Proms, it’s always such a spectacular evening, and I’m looking forward to performing again in August.” Giggleswick born-and-bred Sarah Fox will be hitting the high notes in the concert. 2019 will be her first time at Castle Howard, but she is no stranger to the Proms, having performed in the BBC MGM Prom in 2009 and The Proms in 2011. Sarah has taken her vocal talents around the world, with leading operatic roles in Germany, Barcelona and Cincinnati. Wynne Evans
A
lthough a warm mid-summer’s eve may feel incredibly far away as Britain shivers through the cold winter, plans for the 2019 Castle Howard Proms (Saturday 3 August 2019) are well underway, with the two guest soloists now confirmed. Best-selling tenor Wynne Evans will be joining North Yorkshire’s own operatic soprano, Sarah Fox for the North’s most prestigious al fresco Proms event.
The rousing musical accompaniment to the evening will be provided by the London Gala Orchestra under the baton of Stephen Bell, and the compère for the evening is Phil Seymour, who is both the master of ceremonies for World Snooker and World of Sport Wrestling. Warm-up acts will also perform as the thousands of concert goers set up deckchairs, picnics and sometimes even dining tables with silver platters candelabra on the North Front lawns of the historic house, which gently slope down towards the lakeside-stage - a natural amphitheatre for the grand performance.
Wynne Evans is a best-selling classical artist, with his debut album with Warner Music going straight to number one in the classical charts. His acclaimed performance in the 25th anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera, and appearances in a host of concerts at the Royal Opera House, English National Opera and Opera North have made him an incredibly Sarah Fox popular live performer, whilst he is also well known for his decade in the recurring role as Gio Compario in a series of TV adverts.
“This is a fantastic line-up for this year’s event, and it is wonderful to have Wynne returning after a very warm reception five years ago,” comments promoter and event organiser, Mark Harrison. “The Castle Howard Proms always provides a night to remember, and we’re looking forward to bringing back traditional favourites such as the Spitfire flypast at the start of the evening, as well as a stunning fireworks and laser show to bring the evening to a close.”
Wynne last performed at Castle Howard Proms in 2014, and comments:
Tickets for Castle Howard Proms are available until 31 March 2019 at the early-bird price of £33 per adult and £5 per child via the Castle Howard ticket office or online at www.castlehoward.co.uk (booking fees apply to online sales). VIP tickets start from £175 per head.
40 | Handy Mag | March 2019
The concert is slightly earlier in 2019 to previous years, as the enormous BBC Countryfile Live event will be taking over the grounds from 15 - 18 August. Tickets for the Proms have also gone on sale earlier than normal, with strong ticket sales and an enhanced VIP ticket - which includes a champagne reception and dedicated seating - also proving popular.

BECK ISLE MUSEUM RE-OPENS FOR 2019
T
he Museum opens with new exhibitions and displays alongside the old favourites. Marking 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria, this year’s costume exhibition is “Six Decades of Victorian Fashion”. Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and reigned for just over 63 years. During Victoria’s reign, fashion - particularly for women – changed a great deal. The dresses on show reflect these changes, from the soft shapes of the 1840’s to the highly sculpted forms created by the crinoline and the bustle. Pickering Musical Society is celebrating it’s 100th birthday this year and visitors to the Museum will be able to see programmes and photographs from performances in each decade since 1919. ork Cats Protection are offering the perfect solution to anyone in need of an environmentally-friendly pest control service, with this lovely 3 year old feral cat called Sooty. A feral cat like Sooty can provide a highly efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical pest control. Garden centres, golf clubs, smallholdings, farms, stables, shops; in fact, anywhere where there is room to roam and rodents
to catch, will provide working cats like Sooty with a suitable environment in which to live and work. Poor Sooty has ended up in our care after we became involved in a welfare situation which meant she had to be removed from the unsuitable location where she lived previously. She has lived her whole life outdoors and is really unhappy being kept cooped up at the Centre and is longing to feel the breeze blowing through her whiskers once again. Owners must be prepared to provide their feline employee with food, water, shelter and veterinary care when needed, none of which will affect their desire to catch prey. If you are able to provide an appropriate home for Sooty please contact the Adoption Centre on 01904 760356 or through our website york.cats. org.uk. Once this young lady is back in a suitable location we’re sure she’ll turn that feline frown upside down!
Every daffodil counts - we need you!
I
t’s that time again, where the days get a little longer, spring feels a little closer and daffodils start to bloom. It can only mean one thing…The Great Daffodil Appeal is here! Marie Curie’s biggest annual fundraising campaign has once again kicked off and we’ll be raising as much money and awareness as possible for our local services right through to April. Behind every daffodil there is a story and each and every donation for a daffodil keeps the Marie Curie nursing services in your area going. Every one of us in the UK will be affected at some point by a terminal illness, and we need more support than ever so that we can provide the care everyone deserves at the end of their life. And it’s so easy to help. We need as many collectors as possible to sign up for a couple of hours at one of our street or supermarket collections. There are lots of collections in your area to choose from and we are so grateful for all the help we can get. 50 | Handy Mag | March 2019

Simply Style
e all want our homes to be comfortable, practical and goodlooking. Just as important as gorgeous colours and appealing accessories are necessities such as easy-to-clean surfaces, effective lighting and durable kitchenware. Which is where simple style – a combination of form and function that is completely unpretentious and always hard working – excels. It takes classic designs that have stood the test of time and combines them with the best of modern furnishings, using tactile materials and pale, neutral colours to achieve a look that is calm and quiet, comfortable and honest, and hugely pleasing to live with. Walls and floors are the starting point. Quick and inexpensive to achieve are walls in plain paint shades. Neutrals are fundamental, with a palette of soft whites ranging from chalk and ivory through to deeper taupes and greys, with stronger accents providing contrast: sage green, midnight blue or earthy brown, for example. More finished surfaces could include grasscloth wallpaper, bevel-edge tiles or timber panelling. As for floors, the key is to combine the practicality of sturdy materials such as traditional stone flags, brick pavers or wooden floorboards with the softness of plain or minimally patterned carpets or conveniently placed, understated rugs. 56 | Handy Mag | March 2019
Furniture should be pared down in style, chosen for its strength, durability and comfort first and foremost, and always clean-lined as opposed to over-decorative. Mixing eras works perfectly, too, provided pieces are chosen for their inherent good design and plain style. Rather than elaborate window treatments, this style has a less-is-more feel, and where windows can be left bare, then why not? Panelled wooden shutters look elegant and discreet, while Roman blinds and gathered curtains are preferable to anything elaborate. Other soft furnishings might include the plainest of loose covers for chairs and sofas and cushions with no-nonsense fastenings and the most basic of trims. Linen, cotton and wool are ideal fabrics for this style: unassuming, natural fibres that have been the backbone of classical decorating for centuries. Look for plain colours and stripes, adding a range of textures for interest. In addition to the soft drape of textiles, introduce a range of natural materials, such as woven willow, sisal, slate or timber, to provide an interesting atmosphere even in an apparently minimal room. To ensure a calm and airy feel overall, good storage is vital. Ancillary areas such as utility rooms, laundry rooms, boot rooms and dressing rooms are a great asset, but where space is more

For a fuss-free and timelessly good-looking style, choose plain and simple chic. limited well-designed cupboards and shelves are incredibly helpful in terms of clearing away the clutter and confusion of everyday life and making simple rooms feel more spacious and liveable. In kitchens, a free-standing storage piece such as a dresser, plate rack or butcher’s block breaks up the uniformity of fitted cupboards and creates a more timeless appearance. Finally, when it comes to lighting, inset spotlights throw light where needed without drawing the eye, while classic fittings, such as glass pendants, Anglepoise table lamps or slender wall lights with ceramic shades can be added where necessary. As for finishing touches, beware an abundance of accessories, and choose essential

items such as wooden peg hooks, thick woollen throws and blankets, blue and white crockery, rustic bread boards and pillar candles, plus loose arrangements of gorgeous cottage-garden flowers. Key ingredients of simple style: • Consider wooden panelling, tongue-and-groove boarding, textured wallpaper and classic tiles. • Opt for classic floorboards, stone or slate flags, brick pavers or terracotta tiles for the floor, combined with plain carpets and/or subtle rugs. • Use soft white shades with a few deeper colours. • Choose natural materials such as wood, slate, wicker, wool and cotton. • Ensure rooms are clear of clutter by making the most of storage space. • Remember that good design applies across all eras, so combining old and new will work if furnishings are chosen carefully for both form and function. • Avoid bold patterns in favour of plains and stripes. • Fit wooden shutters, Roman blinds or softly gathered curtains at the windows, or leave them bare if you dare. Is A Diesel Car Right For Me? WHAT TYPE OF JOURNEYS DO YOU USUALLY DO?
Diesels are only efficient after heating up, which means they’ll be inefficient and polluting during the first 10 miles or so of any journey – not good if you regularly make short trips. In addition, modern pollution control systems need the engines to be running at a certain RPM to function. This is easily achievable on the motorway, but if your car starts a regeneration cycle while idling on the school run, you risk clogging up exhaust gas recirculation systems or diesel particulate filters.
D
espite recent bad publicity, diesels still fit the bill for some drivers – and we explain why.
Since September 2015, when news broke that Volkswagen had covered up illegally high emissions of nitrogen oxides from its diesel vehicles, diesel has come under a lot of pressure, with calls for it to be heavily taxed or even banned altogether. Many say that diesel was mis-sold to buyers, promising low emissions and high fuel economy when in reality it was totally unsuitable for the journeys they do – but for some it’s still a good choice…
WHAT’S YOUR MILEAGE?
Diesel cars make sense for drivers doing over 20,000 miles a year, who benefit from the increased fuel economy a diesel engine provides – and will save money over time. Diesel fuel contains more energy than petrol, so despite being slightly more expensive it offers better fuel economy. However, in most cases, diesel variants of cars cost more to buy than their petrol equivalents, hence this price gap dictates the break-even mileage. For example, the Volkswagen Golf 1.6-litre diesel costs around £1,600 more than the equivalent petrol car, giving a break-even mileage of 75,000 based on official fuel economy figures. For an average driver, that’s over six years, but someone doing 30,000 miles a year would break even in less than three years. 58 | Handy Mag | March 2019
HOW HEAVILY LOADED ARE YOU?
Diesels have more torque or pulling power than petrol engines and thus are ideal for heavily loaded vehicles such as people carriers, vans, or trucks, or for those who often tow heavy items like caravans or horse boxes. A diesel is more pleasant to use when loaded to capacity, and won’t suffer as much strain as a petrol car would.
WHICH CARS ARE YOU LOOKING AT?
Sometimes there really is no alternative to a diesel unless you choose a different car – for example, there’s currently not a single petrol-powered crew-cab pickup truck on the UK market. The same can be true of people carriers and some executive or family cars. Diesel can also be the sensible option in the luxury end of the market, where the petrol offering is perhaps a powerful V8 with poor fuel economy. In these situations, consider the diesel if you intend to take regular long journeys and have it serviced to keep the emission control systems running properly. Certainly, many diesel car drivers would be better off in a petrol model, or an equivalent hybrid or electric model. Yet the fuel has its uses, for high-mileage, heavily laden or penny-pinching buyers. As always, shop carefully and consider all the options before buying. By James Baggott

Beat the Mad March Hairs
T
echnology promises to tame your tangles and your tresses, solve split ends and make your hair incredibly curly or fantastically flat.
Vacuum cleaner company Dyson’s expertise in moving air around means it makes a very effective (and very expensive) hairdryer that gets your hair dry in a fraction of the usual time without extreme heat. At £299 the Supersonic is a big investment but it might seem a good buy when you consider the cost of your time. If that’s out of reach though, review site ExpertReviews says the best budget model is currently the BaByliss 2100 Salon Light, which delivers great results for a little under £30. If you’re considering a cheaper model, pay attention to both the power and the weight: some hairdryers are uncomfortable to hold if you need to dry longer hair. One of the best-rated curling tongs is the gHD Soft Curl Tong. It has a large 32mm width barrel and has an automatic cut-out so you don’t need to worry about whether you’ve left it on. The results are spectacular but again it’s pricey at £110. As with hairdryers there are plenty of less hightech and considerably less expensive models around that do a perfectly good job, such as Remington’s Keratin Protect Curling Wand; at the time of writing it’s £24.50 online. gHD is probably better known for its hair straighteners, and its Platinum + White Styler tops 62 | Handy Mag | March 2019
the Cosmopolitan best-buy list despite its £175 price tag. It constantly monitors your hair to ensure it’s delivering the right temperature to the right place at the right time. For men, hair care is more often about removal than styling. According to the tech site T3, the best electric razor for men is the Philips 9000 Series Prestige, a wet and dry razor with wireless charging and the ability to cope with days of stubble. The RRP is silly at £450 and it’s widely available for much less, but lesser models do a great job too. Hair removal isn’t just for men, of course. Epilation is a great alternative to waxing, and Braun’s Silk-épil 9 is the best and – according to many reviewers – the least painful model around. Shop around, however; if you don’t want the various scrubbing and shaving attachments you can get it for considerably less. If you’d rather zap hair than pluck it, consider an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) machine although it’s not as effective on blonde, grey or red hairs or darker skin tones. The best known brand is Philips, whose Lumea range starts at around £150. Just be careful if you’re planning to travel anywhere sunny, as you shouldn’t use these devices on skin that’s just been – or is about to be – exposed to lots of sunlight. itizens in Policing is the term used to describe the thousands of people across the UK who give up their own time to support the police. They range from special constables to puppy walkers, volunteer police cadets to Neighbourhood Watch volunteers. They help to increase the capacity of the police service and enhance the service provided by North Yorkshire Police. North Yorkshire Police has a strong history of volunteering. It plays a vital role in policing, whether it’s directly for the police or for one of the many organisations who work in partnership with us. People come from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences to give their own time freely, and for this we are extremely grateful. Our Citizens in Policing team manage all aspects of volunteering at North Yorkshire Police. The History of Plastic
t has been around for less than 200 years but has become our indispensable disposable. Now, with the realisation of its hugely detrimental impact on our environment, are its days numbered? Put simply, plastics are polymer chains which can be carbon or silicon-based and moulded into any shape. The first plastics were derived from natural and organic sources. Rubber, a plant-based material, was being used as early as the 1820s. It was manufactured from a substance called latex, the thick milky sap produced by the rubber tree. Elastic, invented in 1820 by Thomas Hancock, is also produced from latex. Similarly, in 1839, a German chemist, Eduard Simon, accidentally came across what he called Styrol (now known as styrene) while distilling a natural resin of the Turkish sweetgum tree. However, he did not realise its potential and his work was resurrected in the early 1900s by Hermann Staudinger to become the basis of polystyrene. Another plant-derived substance, and the forerunner of the plastics family, was called Parkesine. It was unveiled by Alexander Parkes at London’s Great International Exhibition in 1862 and used to make objects like buttons and cutlery handles. Derived from cellulose, it could be heated, moulded into whatever shape was needed and then cooled to retain this shape. Cellulose also gave rise to celluloid and cellophane. Bakelite, invented in 1907, was the first plastic to be made from a non-plant source. A hard resin formed from formaldehyde and phenol (a chemical from coal tar), its manufacture was perfected by a Belgian inventor, Leo Baekeland. It was initially used as an insulator for electrical wires but went on to be made into all kinds of everyday objects from decorative bowls and cigarette holders to telephones and jewellery. The Bakelite 66 | Handy Mag | March 2019
Corporation’s tagline was ‘the material of a thousand uses’, which could equally be applied to all plastic today. In 1930, Badische Anilin & Soda-Fabrik (BASF) used the work of Simon and Staudinger to start commercially manufacturing polystyrene, which could be injected, extruded or moulded. Later, the Dow Chemical Company produced the first foamed polystyrene dubbed Styrofoam – a light, air-filled insulating plastic that went on to be used in disposable cups, packaging and the building industry. By the 1930s, a range of synthetic plastics was introduced: vinyl, acrylic, polyester, polyvinylchloride (PVC), polythene, polyurethanes and nylon. This is now seen as the most significant era in the history of plastics. Manufacture was taken over by petrochemical companies who turned crude oil into mass-produced plastics for every conceivable commercial and domestic requirement. It was a miracle material. With the 1941 development of polyethylene, which can withstand up to two atmospheres of pressure, the plastics drinks bottle was born. Inexpensive to mass-produce, plastics quickly became an integral part of our disposable society. By simply tweaking the polymer chains, a plastic suitable for any form or function could be made. And the downside? Plastic can be divided into two types: thermoplastic and thermoset. Thermoplastic can be recycled but thermoset cannot and endures. Also, plastics that find their way into the sea are broken down into microplastics that can invade living organisms, including, ultimately, ourselves. So, as we ingest increasingly more of our miracle invention, is our DNA chain slowly becoming a polymer one? By Catherine Rose

FOIL FOR SNAPPY WINS EVERY CAN COUNTS GREEN CAN AWARD by recycling their drink cans and other aluminium packaging. The project’s work is of benefit to both the local community and the wider environment, so it’s a privilege to present Karen with this Green Can Award.”
F
oil for Snappy based in York have received a national recycling award for their outstanding work in recycling drink cans and other aluminium packaging. Foil for Snappy was created by Karen Nash in December 2012 to help raise funds for The Snappy Trust. The Snappy Trust, formerly known as Snappy (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York), is a registered charity supporting children and young people with wide ranging disabilities, from across the York area and was originally set up back in 1985. The Every Can Counts Green Can Award has been awarded to Karen Nash and her Foil for Snappy project in recognition of her hard work and dedication to the initiative. The project collects drink cans, foil and household cables for recycling. The material is sold to L. Clancey & Sons – an aluminium recycling centre based on the outskirts of York in Murton. Since its establishment Foil for Snappy has recycled over 7 tonnes of aluminium material, raising £5000 for The Snappy Trust. The Foil for Snappy project has gone from strength to strength over the years and now operates over 50 collection points across York in a variety of locations, including supermarket car parks, community buildings and local businesses. Presenting the award, Chris Latham-Warde, Programme Manager for Every Can Counts, said “Karen has achieved brilliant results since starting Foil for Snappy. Thanks to Karen, York residents have the opportunity to support an important local charity whilst also doing the right thing for the environment 68 | Handy Mag | March 2019
Karen Nash, the Project Leader for Foil for Snappy, said “The Snappy Trust supports over 300 children with additional needs including my own son. By recycling what others throw away we are fundraising for them and saving the planet at the same time which is very satisfying. I never imagined that asking friends of Snappy to collect a few Christmas drink cans and mince pie cases to raise a little bit of extra money could become a city-wide aluminium recycling collection. I am very proud of what we have achieved and to receive this national award in recognition of our hard work is very special.” Anne Stamp, Service Manager at The Snappy Trust said “We are incredibly grateful for the Foil for Snappy project. Not only has it raised awareness for The Snappy Trust but also for the environment, so much so that even the young people who attend Snappy have become more responsible with their cans.”
Every Can Counts is a free to use recycling initiative that aims to increase the number of drinks cans recycled, whether at work or while out and about. The programme aims to increase the number of drinks cans recycled, whether at work or whilst out and about, by providing provides practical advice and support, including free communication materials and help with finding a recycling collection partner. Fabulous Fruit Trees by Pippa Greenwood
I
f you have ever been put off the idea of growing your own tree fruit, such as apples, pears, plums or cherries, simply because your garden is on the small size, think again; it is not difficult to grow a fair quantity of fruit in even a tiny garden. There is no need for an orchard, acres of land or even a large garden, so just how do you manage it? Start by checking out the plant’s ‘rootstock’, which is the type of tree root that the variety you want has been grafted on to. The rootstock determines how big a tree will grow, and if you get one that has a dwarfing effect your tree will be much less inclined to become huge. Rootstocks ‘Pixey’ on plums, ‘M9’ on apples or ‘Quince A’ on pears should help to reduce the risk of a large tree developing. You could also use an apple or pear as a border

edging. Each tree will spread to 150cm (5ft) or more and can be trained to form a horizontal barrier at about 45cm (18in) above the ground – they look fantastic when in flower, and then bear fruit along the horizontal ‘arms’. A pollinator tree nearby is needed to ensure good fruit set or choose the self-fertile ‘Concorde’ pear and you’ll still get a reasonable crop with just one tree. You can buy ready-trained step-overs from some garden centres and specialist fruit nurseries. Consider growing fruit trees in pots. There is no doubt that growing pretty well anything in a pot takes more effort from you, as the plant will be reliant on you for food and more moisture, but provided you use a good-sized pot – perhaps even a half-barrel – it can work well. It is best to use a loam-based John Innes No. 3 compost, but make sure there is plenty of drainage material at the base of the container – broken flower pots work well! Provided you make sure that no one variety gets out of hand and grows too vigorously, it is a useful idea in a smaller garden.

‘Family Trees’ are basically trees on to which two additional varieties of the same fruit have been grafted, meaning you can grow three varieties of apple or pear on just one tree. The varieties are selected by the nursery so that they all pollinate each other and so you should get a fair crop from an established tree. When space is limited, you can grow ‘Ballerina’ or ‘Minarettes’ trees. These are what I call ‘skyward’ apples, because they produce their fruits on short spurs which grow out of the vertical main stem, with the result that you end up with a tree measuring up to 2.4m (8ft) tall, but which is so columnar that you can plant them just 60-90cm (2-3ft) apart if you want more than one tree. This form of tree is available as many different varieties, including dessert apples, cooking apples, pears, plums, gages and damsons. They can be grown in patio pots or in open ground. Most fruit trees need a pollinator, or sometimes two, to ensure that the flowers on each variety are pollinated so that the fruit can form. If space is very

If you love apples, this might be a ‘Queen Cox’, ‘Greensleeves’ or ‘Red Devil’, or if pears are your passion, try the variety ‘Concorde’ or ‘Invincible’, for cherries try ‘Stella’ and for plums choose variety

‘Victoria’. If you do provide a pollinator you’re likely to get a heavier crop, but without you’ll still get a fair quantity of fruit. If you have a fence or framework with a bit of planting space next to it, then you could also grow your fruit as an ‘espalier’, which means trained and pruned so that the tree lies pretty well flat against the fence with several parallel ‘arms’ that bear the fruit, or perhaps as a ‘fan’ where the branches are trained and pruned to produce a near flat fan shape against the surface – this works especially well for cherries, plums, damsons and even apricots. Why not grow a cordon or single-stemmed apple or pear over a simple arch? Better still, grow one variety up one side and another (a suitable pollinator) up the other – it’ll look stunning in the spring when in flower, and then again when it bears its tasty crop!
