elcome to the March edition.

It has been a challenging month moving into our new little office. Notwithstanding BT and energy companies we are finally in and settled and able to get to work properly on the Handy Mags this spring. Nicky has been busy getting organised putting together a schedule of local events for the whole year and there is a scary amount of events coming up this spring and summer. Keep reading your Handy Mag to make sure you don’t miss anything important! This month whilst you’re trying our puzzles or wondering if you need an eye test as you scour the pages for all 5 of our hidden cartoon characters, take time to look at all of the fabulous local businesses advertising in the magazine. Despite the national news telling us that things are looking brighter, every pound spent locally, whatever the business, really matters. And of course make sure you tell them that you found them in the Handy Mag! Do you live in or near Strensall? A group of Strensall residents are working to strengthen their community with a new group to organise events in the area.

BUILDING for your family

A

lan Holliday Builders specialise in giving family homes throughout York and the surrounding areas a new lease of life.

From small roofing repairs to driveways and extensions, you can make your home more attractive, comfortable and spacious with the help of Alan and his team. A popular choice is insulating your conservatory ceiling to give you an all year round usable room. “We have insulated quite a few ceilings now,” says Alan, “And it is amazing the difference it makes to your living space.” Garage conversions are also popular and Alan has turned customers’ garages into TV rooms, offices, utility rooms and even bedrooms. A bricklayer by trade, Alan and his team work alongside other local businesses to offer a full complement of building services. They do most of

their work with domestic properties, but they have also been used regularly by Haxby Parish Council and York City Council’s Tenants’ Choice. Alan said: “We work closely with a lot of the local, well-known tradesmen. As we live and work in the local community, we make sure we take pride in everything we do and give our customers the best possible quality of service we can.” When it comes to aspects of customer service most important to them, Alan and his team take pains to make the actual process of having work done as painless as possible, minimising the sense of intrusion. Also, before works begin, the whole process will be explained clearly and in detail, without jargon.

MARCH ON Now the weather’s improving and spring has almost sprung, it’s time to head outside and explore the great outdoors. OK, so this might be taking the month of March a tad literally, but how about taking it literary? Here are some of our top tips for great reads about epic journeys.

A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson Far from being a stroll among the bluebells, the Appalachian Trail is a two thousand mile route that goes right the way along the East Coast of North America, from Georgia to Maine. Bill Bryson’s hilarious account of all the things that will kill you along the way will have you longing for a bit of adventure. This is a trek that’s a journey into the wild. Some don’t make it alive. Rest assured, if the bears don’t get you then the poison ivy will.

Walking Home: A Poet’s Journey

Simon Armitage Most walkers complete the Pennine Way by going South to North but Simon Armitage decided it would be more poetic if he did it the other way around. He made the 256 mile journey from Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border to his native Yorkshire, and the village where he was born. True to form, Armitage decided not to look like he was on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition but to wander as a lonely troubadour, penniless on the Pennine Way and give poetry readings in village halls, churches and pubs. It’s packed with Northern soul 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

and would be best enjoyed with a pint of stout in a pub.

Walking

Henry David Thoreau According to Thoreau, in order to find happiness, we just need to spend more time outdoors. More specifically, not only do we need to constantly reconnect with nature but we need to be moving and discovering and taking long afternoon walks. As a writer he took inspiration from his surroundings and revelled in the wild and the free. Here he did his greatest thinking and he remains a hero among environmentalists and fans of American literature alike.

Rabbit-Proof Fence

Doris Pilkington, Nugi Garimara In 1931 the Australian government dictated that all Aboriginal and mixed race children should be removed from their homes and put into settlements to assimilate into white culture. This is the true story of three little girls who followed the rabbit-proof fence 1000 miles across the harsh Australian outback, all the way back home. Doris Pilkington’s mother was one of those girls and here she tells her mother’s remarkable survival story. It’s an absolutely unbelievable account of the human spirit and its resilience.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Rachel Joyce This is an extraordinary story that begins with the most ordinary of objects: a letter. Harold Fry receives a letter from old flame and dear friend Queenie, who is now in a hospice and facing her mortality. Harold writes her a reply but then on a whim, decides he must walk the 600 miles to hand deliver it to her, leaving his wife upstairs doing the housework. It’s such an amazing and heart-warming story. Will Harold reach Queenie in time?

The Hobbit

J R R Tolkien If there’s one thing in life that hobbits enjoy more than anything, it’s comfort. From the sanctuary of his hobbit-hole, Bilbo Baggins is plucked by the wizard Gandalf and taken off on an extraordinary and most unexpected journey, deep into Middle Earth. Accompanying Gandalf and his band of thirteen dwarves, the world’s most reluctant hero must help them raid the treasures of Smaug the Magnificent, a dangerous dragon. Written for Tolkien’s own grandchildren, it’s the prelude to The Lord of the Rings and a fantastic odyssey into the unknown.

A BETTER LIFE GREEN WITH ENVY by Derek Thompson Our Better Life has always been about cooperation. We try to work with Nature and the seasons; we swap produce and ideas with neighbours and friends. It’s never about competition...usually. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com “You must come and see our new place,” a friend of ours simpered. “We’re still renovating, but the garden is looking lovely.” In fairness, they’ve been renovating for months and months now and there’s no sign of the house surrendering yet. Anne was very keen to go, principally because she likes looking around other people’s houses - when they’re in, I hasten to add. The garden was, to my emerald eyes, spectacular. They had six chickens, each one a different breed and with its own pedigree, a humungous vegetable plot with three types of potato already in the ground and enough fruit trees to have made 48 litres of cider last autumn. By way of a contrast, we once harvested five sweet potatoes that wouldn’t fill a saucer and managed a mug of juice from a bag of foraged apples. We were given a whistle-stop tour of several fruit bushes and raspberry canes, a nod to the concrete pond (rectangular) and a visit to the earthworks soon to become a solar array. They 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

also showed us where the water butts will sit and how they plan to follow our example, by linking them to a Rainwater Hub up the wall under the main drainpipe. I was quiet on the drive home, thinking about what we could do with more space. Anne, ever the practical one, knew just how to harness my ambitions. She drew up a list of things we need to do in March for our own little eco-paradise: 1. Take up more grass, so we can extend the mini-meadow to make it a midi-meadow. We’ll also need more fine sand for the 50 / 50 mix before we sow last year’s wildflower seeds and it’ll be a chance to delve into a traditional seed catalogue to diversify. 2. Spread the love by spreading the compost. Plus, this year I really want to look at doing something with seaweed. Incidentally, the ‘love’ does not extend to weeds. 3. Tend to the plants in the (world’s smallest) conservatory. I tend to think everything is pot-bound, but sometimes I am right. It’s also a good time to check the

drainage and keep a watchful eye on the temperature. It may only be March but it can be pretty toasty in there on a sunny day. 4. Generally, get busy. This covers a multitude of activities - everything from checking car boot sales for new old tools to turning over the veg patch and planting out onions and beans. Naturally, we popped into a garden centre on our way home - for tea and cake. “While you were looking at their wood store,” Anne caught me daydreaming, “Stephanie told me how much they’d been inspired by our garden.” I smiled then, remembering how we’d agreed a tomato growing competition: Gardner’s Delight vs. Sweet Million - our conservatory vs. their leaky greenhouse. And I recalled those words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Mainly, it had to be said, because it was written in the seed catalogue.

COOKING TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

Easy Lamb Rogan Dhansak Makes 4. Ready in 40 minutes

This recipe does use fresh ingredients but ‘cheats’ a little by using a jar of sauce rather than creating it from scratch which saves time, but still produces a delicious and authentic dish. Unlike many curry type dishes, the lentils make this very thick so there’s no need for rice. It reheats perfectly and so can be cooked the day before ready to eat at short notice the next day.

Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas Mark 2. 1. Add a splash of olive oil to a frying pan and cook the onions, carrot and celery until they take on a bit of colour, then put these into a large casserole pot.

In the same pan put about half the diced lamb 2. and fry until sealed, then put into casserole pot, repeat with the rest of the lamb.

Fry the peppers for a couple of minutes, then 3. put them into casserole pot with a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Add the chillies to taste – 4 chillies will give a medium heat but use fewer chillies and remove the seeds if you don’t like it too hot.

in the two jars of Rogan Josh, then add 4. aPour bit of water to the jars, put the lid back on

and shake. Chop half the coriander and add to the pot with the liquid from the jars and stir thoroughly. You need the casserole pot filled to near the top, so add water if necessary. Don’t worry if it looks a bit watery, the lentils at the end will thicken it all up.

INGREDIENTS • 800g diced leg of lamb or lamb steaks • 3 whole peppers, red, green, yellow, sliced. • 1 chopped and diced onion. • 2 carrots peeled and finely diced • 2 sticks of celery chopped and finely diced. • 2 jars of Rogan Josh sauce (recommend Loyd Grosman). • Half a teacup of dried red lentils. • 2 – 4 whole red chillies sliced. • Bunch of fresh coriander. • Olive oil. • Salt and pepper. • For serving, naan bread and sour cream.

into the oven, giving it a stir after about 5. 2Puthours. After 3.5 hours sprinkle over lentils and stir in. 6. Put back into the oven for another 40 minutes. Just before serving sprinkle the rest of the 7. fresh coriander on top and then serve with naan bread, and sour cream.

Top Tips from a dental professional

Gum Disease and How to Prevent it! Last month I discussed Gum Disease, this month I’d like to give more detail on correct tooth-brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Toothbrushing Angle the bristles of the brush up or down so that they clean under the edge of the gum, Some people have smooth by Christine Parker gums which are easier to clean BDS (GDC 72136) but those that are diseased are often thickened and can trap plaque under their edges. Remember to clean the inside surface near the tongue and palate, behind the lower front teeth is where many people accumulate tartar, a round headed electric brush is particularly useful here. To clean the outside surfaces of the upper molars don’t open too wide.. Close fully put your finger along the outside of your molars and you should be able to touch the back of the last tooth. Now slowly open and you will feel the bone connecting your lower jaw compressing the side your finger. If you open wide to start with it will stop you getting your brush to the back. Work out what degree of opening is most comfortable for you.

Interdental cleaning Ideally this should be done every day from the teens onward. Ever wondered why so many Americans have great teeth. They are obsessed with flossing we call it anti-ageing for the gums! Flossing does require dexterity but the more you practice the better you’ll get. Interdental cleaning is best done after the last meal of the day if possible but you will get benefits whatever time of day it’s done. Your gums may bleed to start with but this should stop as your gums become healthier. If you find flossing too difficult there is a huge range of products of varying sizes your dentist will be able to advise you on. I’M SPARTACUS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets

M

y name is Spartacus. I live in Strensall. I am a big, black, handsome and intelligent specimen of the feline species. I strut about the streets gaining respect everywhere I go, but I have a secret! I was not always called Spartacus, until recently I have gone by the name ‘Mish Mish’ cruelly shortened by my owner to Mishy Moo and sometimes-even MOO MOO!!!!! Imagine my embarrassment when she summonsed me loudly from the back door, cooing ‘Mishy moooOOOOHHHh, where are yooOOOUUUUu? MOOOOOEEEEY!’ I would be happily strutting my stuff showing everyone what a fine specimen I was, when all of a sudden I would hear that! In horror I was forced to look around me and see who was about, if I was lucky, there was nobody and I could make a mad dash for the house before anyone realised she was talking to me. Other times I was less lucky and I would have to casually saunter around the cul-de -sac pretending she wasn’t referring to me, whilst looking accusingly at the other cats as though they were the one with the stupid name and hoping to goodness she would not come out of the house and TOUCH ME. Often by the time I had wandered around nonchalantly waiting for the coast to clear I’d get home to find the other cats had eaten all MY dinner. Thankfully we recently moved to a house with cat flaps so I can come and go as I please and no longer need to be called. As a result I am now introducing myself to the new neighbours as Spartacus. A down side to the move is that I have lost my six other dinners that I used to receive daily from our old neighbours, much to the relief of my owner. I

love food but my owner says I love food too much and that I need to lose weight. I decided she may be right as I often got a bit stuck in the cat flap which has not been a very pleasant experience as my bottom was open to the elements whilst I tried to manoeuvre myself in a carefree manner so nobody noticed that I was in fact STUCK. As I result I have made a consented effort over the last couple of months not to eat the other cats dinners and I have tried to be more active and despite licking the empty food bowl longingly, I have lost weight. This has not gone unnoticed by my owner. As a vet nurse she is never satisfied. First I was fat and needed to diet and now I have lost weight she has shipped me off to Station house Vets, her place of work, to be examined for weight loss! I do not like cat boxes, nor do I like cars, or being refused breakfast. And I certainly do not like being weighed, prodded, put in a kennel, looked at and having people comment rudely on my weight! They touched my feet. (A no no in any cats language) checked my blood pressure, took my heart rate, checked my TEMPERATURE which I will not ever ever be having done again, all I will say on that little humiliation was it was far far worse than having my feet touched or getting stuck in the cat flap! I had blood taken from my neck, urine taken directly from my bladder (I say taken as I did not consent to this). They took blood from my ear by pricking it to check my glucose levels and then palpated my abdomen, (another no touch area). Apparently I needed a full health check due to my recent weight loss, my age (I’m eight, which is rudely classed as mature) and the fact I’m always searching for food, (I’m hungry and dissatisfied as I’m on a diet!!!) I spent the rest of the day making my thoughts known and only perked up when I received my belated breakfast. My owner came bounding in happily to share the good news that I was all healthy and what a clever puss I was for losing weight. I did not share her enthusiasm for telling me what I already knew. I turned my back on her lifted my tail in the air, gave it a good flick (cat swear word!) and left the room making it absolutely clear I would not forgive her until tea time!

A FINE GENT Let me introduce you to a fine gent who goes by the name of Jonathan. This lion of a cat is desperate to find a new home in the near future and we’re hoping that the good readers of The Handy Mag can help. Jonathan came into the care of York Cats Protection because his previous owners were moving and also had a new baby who was making Jonathan unhappy. Once he gets to know you Jonathan is a very friendly chap, he loves sitting on laps and having his luxurious long coat stroked. Unfortunately big Jon does take some time before he trusts someone enough to let them get that close to him. He can get a bit grouchy when he doesn’t trust people and will hiss and even sometimes give a warning swipe to show his displeasure. As you can imagine this does put off potential adopters.

Jonathan needs a new home where he can take things at his own pace and build up a bond with a new family. We think he would be best suited to a quieter household where he is the only pet. The staff and volunteers and Cats Protection have been lucky enough to see Jonathan’s sweet side and we are all eager to see him settled into a new home where he relax and enjoy life. If you can give this big lad a chance then please get in touch York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am and 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance.

Sunday 30th March

Mother’s Day By Alex Albrighton

F

rom the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires. Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heart-warming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on every role in the family – carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us. The founder of

28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine). Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent – Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential.

SAVING ORDINARY FOLK MILLIONS OF POUNDS – ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

M

ost people think financial planning is just about managing investments, and yet the most rewarding things we do are nothing to do with investments. So far this year I’ve helped someone claim Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance, adding almost £7,000 per annum to the family coffers; protected £200,000 of a family’s wealth from attack from the Local Authority in paying for care; saved £160,000 of Inheritance tax instantly for a family by making one very low cost move; protected a client’s £250,000 pension death benefits from Inheritance Tax; solved an elderly couples Inheritance Tax problems for just £50 per month; put insurances in place for a young family which means they don’t have to worry about what happens if they die or are unable to earn an income to pay for everything; moved a dodgy £80,000 investment for clients with a “cautious“ attitude to risk from a very speculative investment. I could go on. And usually do! This is all in a day’s work for professional financial planners. So I was surprised to receive an email from a prospective client the other day saying “I am interested in your article on protecting wealth on death, and would like to make an appointment to see you to discuss this, though I must make it clear that I already have an investment manager who looks after my investments and I’m quite happy with him. However, he doesn’t do Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Wealth management.” I don’t get this. I don’t see how an investment manager can ignore the most fundamental aspects of financial planning. The tax wrapper you invest in – that is pension, bond, ISA etc is driven by an individual’s tax status, objectives for the future and attitudes about money. This encompasses every aspect of an individual’s estate – including the value of their

house and pension benefits, the potential inheritance tax and paying for care, risks to income and capital and many other factors. Just managing investments is, in my view, only doing half a job. And one that can’t be done very well given how much these other factors affect the investment strategy. I’ve got FREE copies of my “Wealth Kit” - the step by step blueprint for ensuring you have enough money for retirement, that your money lasts as long as you do, and anything left over ends up with your family, not the government - worth £29.95, to give to the first 20 people who ask for it by 31 March 2014. To get your FREE Family Wealth Kit, including my audio CD “How to find thousands of lost pounds with little-known secrets of the megawealthy”, worth £29.95, call 0330 100 1744, email your details to helen@pen-life.co.uk, go to www.wealth-kit.co.uk, or you can listen to my recorded message on 0800 107 2174.

Based in Strensall

Running a business is like driving a car. In a car you rely on the ‘dashboard’ to tell you how fast you are travelling, how many revs you are doing, which gear you are in and how much fuel you have in your tank. In business very few business owners I meet know the critical drivers to their business and therefore arrive at their year-end destination wondering why their performance hadn’t been better. So you may be asking, ‘what are the critical drivers in my business?’ Firstly it’s important to keep this really simple by understanding the numbers that impact on the profit that you make. I would recommend that every day you record the number of enquiries for your products or services and the source of each enquiry. (This will help you to establish what marketing is working for you). Then add up how many actually bought from you, which will give you your conversion rate. You should then establish how much they spent with you and be able to work out the average spend per customer. If you’re in retail the easiest way to track your conversion rate is to count the footfall into your store. At the end of the day take number of till transactions and divide by the footfall x 100 to give your % conversion rate. You will also need to establish what your profit is for each sale to double check you are selling and making a profit. Once you know your base numbers you can start to improve your performance by applying new strategies. If you’re stuck for ideas then pick up the phone and have a chat with me - I have over 340 strategies to pick from that will make a difference to your performance and rev up your profits in 2014.

COOKING MOTORING

First Drive: Infiniti Q50 S Hybrid THE KNOWLEDGE

WHAT IS IT? Remember the Infiniti G37? No, we didn’t think so. When it quietly appeared on the scene in 2009, it was one of the first Infiniti’s Brits could buy. But with, how should we say this, interesting styling, a thirsty 320bhp 3.7-litre V6 petrol under the bonnet and acres of switchgear poached from low-rent Nissans, it wasn’t terribly successful. But that was then and Infiniti now has a far more appealing proposition for the nation’s fleet managers used to buying 3 Series BMWs and Mercedes C-Classes. We’ve already driven this car abroad but now we’re one of the first to slip behind the wheel of a British car – and Infiniti UK is understandably proud of its latest product. “It’s a halo car for us,” a spokesperson told us on our test drive. “A real performance car with the added benefit of low running costs.” WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? We have the all-wheel-drive Q50S Hybrid on test – you could opt for a version fitted with Infiniti’s new 2.2-litre diesel – and it sports a 364bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol mated to a 50kW electric motor. It tops out at 155mph and reaches 60mph in 5.1 seconds. To put that into perspective, a BMW M5 will reach 60mph in 4.1 seconds but the Q50S will return a combined MPG of 41.5 and 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

emit 159g/km of CO2. It’s quick and punchy, but it won’t be the best-seller in the UK – that’ll be the diesel. WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? It seems to have everything you could want from this type of saloon. The Q50S Hybrid retails at £41,635 and comes absolutely loaded with tech and electric wizardry. The headlines are: full leather upholstery, NASA-developed ‘fatigue free’ front seats, climate control, parking sensors, Bluetooth with streaming and Infiniti’s clever new infotainment system. The latter not only looks neat but works well too – although we weren’t behind the wheel for long so we can’t say how easy it would be to live with. The Q50S has another crafty little piece of tech too. Called Active Lane Control, the system reads the white lines on the road and keeps the car tracking safely between them. ANY RIVALS? Well, it’s the three big guns that make up the biggest competition – namely, BMW’s 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. There’s no doubt the Infiniti matches the Bavarian threesome in many areas and it does have individuality up its sleeve too. For other left-field choices, there’s also the Volvo S60.

Model: Infiniti Q50S Hybrid AWD Price: £41,635 Engine: 3.5-litre V6, hybrid Power: 364bhp, 544Nm Max speed: 155mph (limited) 0-60mph: 5.1 seconds MPG: 41.5 mpg (combined) Emissions: 159g/km CO2

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? There’s no doubt it’s smooth and relaxing to drive. Complaints have been aimed at the Q50S’s steering-by-wires system that can feel artificial. But on our admittedly short test drive, we had little complaint. While it doesn’t match the sheer precision of the 3 Series, the Q50S can be set up for the driver’s tastes – whether sporting or comfort – and is perfectly adequate. A hybrid saloon will spend most of its time navigating city streets and motorways – and for this the Q50 would seem to excel. THE VERDICT This is a car with some of the tightest shut-lines in the business and seriously impressive build quality. Add in smooth driving dynamics and European styling, the Q50S is a fine car. Whether it’ll make a dent in the executive saloon car market is yet to be seen, but Infiniti deserves to do well with this car.

By Solange Hando

Nancy City of Stanislas ducal palace now houses the Lorraine Museum while the ‘Rue Gourmande’ beckons with the aroma of quiche Lorraine or traditional Mirabelle plum tart. King Stanislas would be pleased for he loved his food and is widely acclaimed for introducing the popular vol-au-vent and rum baba.

ust over an hour east of Paris by high speed rail, Nancy, the ancient capital of Lorraine, is one of the finest cities in France, all thanks to a deposed Polish King.

kindly gaze of the “Benefactor” and the view takes your breath away, the elegant City Hall, the Theatre-Opera House, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Triumphal Arch bearing a medallion of Louis XV.

In 1737, sixty year old Stanislas sought refuge at the French Court where his son in law, Louis XV, placed the newlyacquired Duchy of Lorraine in his care. Overwhelmed by gratitude, Stanislas devoted his personal fortune and the rest of his life to his new subjects, feeding the poor, encouraging the arts and planning an architectural showcase, a “royal town”, on former wasteland. He died aged 89 after falling in his fireplace. On that day, 23rd February 1766, the Duchy of Lorraine was returned to the French king.

Yet this is just one of three world heritage sites in the heart of the town. Walk through the Arch and you are greeted by the lovely Place Carrière with its fountains and statues, antique gods and leafy avenue leading to the colonnaded crescent of the former Governor’s Palace. Alliance, the third UNESCO square, is a quiet little place tucked in the back streets around a gurgling Italian-style fountain and trees twittering with birds.

Today, Nancy owes to Stanislas one of Europe’s most dazzling squares, aptly named after him, lined with classical buildings, fountains and wrought iron gates covered in gold leaf. Relax on a café-terrace under the 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

But just steps away from the 18th century city, the old medieval district leads you through a jumble of winding lanes, old-fashioned shops, flower stalls and private mansions festooned in sculpted balustrades and stone staircases. The old

Beyond its historical centre, Nancy is a modern city of broad avenues and pedestrian lanes, colourful markets, pavement cafés, bright department stores and exclusive boutiques gleaming with designer fashion, jewellery and highly prized local crystal. In the early 1900s, this vibrant town gave birth to a new art movement, covering every discipline from painting and sculpture to craft and architecture. It began as Art Nouveau with soft flowing lines symbolising a return to nature and later evolved into the more sober Art Deco but whatever one’s preference, Nancy is a treasure trove of architectural wonders. Wide-eyed visitors gaze at the ornate villas sprinkled in the suburbs, or the opulent Brasserie Excelsior at the heart of town, before strolling down to the river Meurthe or enjoying a cruise on the canal. But when the sun sets over the hills, it’s time to return to the square where golden lights twinkle all around and the dark silhouette of Stanilas the Benefactor keeps watch over his flock. This is just as it should be, a unique and enchanting sight, for no other city in France owes so much to a Polish king.

Provided the surface is made relatively slip-proof, a small bridge can be created quite easily using a simple plank of wood, allowing you to cross over an existing pond or water feature. Stain the wood an interesting colour: perhaps even bright Japanesestyle red if you’re feeling daring.

“The Japanese style is largely very simplistic and aims to create a relaxed, calm environment”

Thinking of water, why not create your own ‘deer chase’? All you need to set up is a source of water powered by a pump, then allow the water to pour out from a bamboo spout and then into another hollowed out piece of bamboo. As the weight of the water increases in the hollowed out bamboo it causes it to tip and to swivel around slightly. Once filled up it then tilts downwards and pours its water into the basin or bowl beneath. When empty it clunks back into position. If you want something even simpler, then buy some wide diameter bamboo canes, hollow one out, cut the end at an angle and simply create a trickling water spout. Provided you fix everything up with a pump, the water can then be recycled around from the bowl or basin and back into the trickling pipe.

When it comes to plants there are several which instantly help to evoke that Japanese effect. The Japanese maples with their intricately divided leaves epitomise Japanese gardens and many will turn brilliant shades in the autumn. Japanese azaleas too can be used to great effect and can bring in some of those really bright colours which look so good for the relatively simple garden surrounding them. ELLA...

ON HAVING A NAP Back in nursery school, “nap time” was specifically timetabled into the day; we got tucked up after a long hard hour of finger painting to rest and collect ourselves in preparation for tig, perhaps. Naps were the best. Sadly, for most of us these days are long gone, and having reached maturity our workaholic western culture expects us to man it from morning to evening on full alert. For any normal adult who isn’t retired or ill, napping during the day is immediately assumed to be a sign of laziness and lack of ambition. Strange, considering that insomnia and sleep deprivation are increasingly prevalent in modern times, and are shown to be highly detrimental to health and stress levels. Indeed, we are all quite familiar with the idea of a good rest in order to improve mental and physical health, yet this only seems to apply at night time.

We are in fact among the small percentage of mammals that sleep only once in 24 hours, and it is a relatively novel thing for humankind to do so anyway. The Romans had a daytime sleep “sexta”, at the sixth hour of the day, and this is in fact the etymological route of the Spanish “siesta”. Although apparently this, too, is getting lost thanks to the influence of the west, which is a shame. The alleged benefits of napping appear to be numerous – better memory, higher level of alertness, and perhaps even a decreased blood pressure, lowering the chances of heart disease and other cardio-vascular problems. Not to mention a better mood and therefore increased productivity – nobody can be expected to be able to work on full power if you’re having one of those bleary-eyed types of days, especially when the problem could be fixed with a simple 20 minute snooze. The term “power nap” was coined by Churchill, who was a firm believer in the potential of napping and took one daily. I reckon we need to embrace the concept, and put it back into the average working day – snuggling up is better than struggling on. Perhaps we should all be allowed to bring pillows into school and work, better still some milk… maybe even a bit of relaxing finger painting? Ella 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

HANDYMAN REQUIREMENTS

JOINERY: Including Doors, Cupboards, Flat Pack Furniture Assembly, Shelving, etc. PAINTING AND DECORATING: Including Plastering and Repair Work.

THE LIFE LIST

LESSONS LEARNED With age, so they say, comes wisdom. You see patterns and cycles - what was once old-hat eventually becomes retro chic (and that goes for hats too, if you wait long enough). However, looking back at the child you once were, there are sometimes lessons you wish you hadn’t learned. 1. When you pull an ugly face, it doesn’t stay with you as the wind changes. However age is going deliver that fate to you anyway. 2. Ailing animals don’t really go to a lovely farm in the country. Goldfish couldn’t live that long either, or change colour while you were at school. 3. Your uncle Bob - the one you really look like wasn’t really your uncle after all. 4. Pickled onions won’t put hair on your chest, no matter how many you eat. Similarly, eating crusts won’t give you curly hair, and a combination of excessive cycling and putting horse manure in your wellies won’t make you grow any taller. 5. Grandparents weren’t always in dire need of soap and hankies when it came to presents, even though they were appreciative. 6. Grown-ups got scared and sad too. 7. Even teachers didn’t know the answer to everything. (And nor will Wikipedia.) 8. There was never a situation where long division or trignometry saved your life. 9. No one would ever love you as unconditionally as your mum and dad. 10. However hard you try, you can’t make weekends, summer holidays, or childhood itself last forever.

PROPERTY MARKING

A

s we go into the New Year there is no doubt that many households have a lot of new electronic devices, cycles and other expensive toys from the Festive Period. Everybody records the Number Plate of their car incase it is ever stolen but sadly not everybody records details of their other possessions.

We load and dispose of your waste

There are many occasions when Police Officers locate items of value during the course of their duties but are unable to identify the rightful owner even if they believe the item to have been stolen. Too often this is because people do not record enough details of their possessions and they can not be identified after any theft has taken place.

North Yorkshire Police would like to draw your attention to a website called IMMOBILISE. This website is used by the Police nationally to help identify the owners of recovered property. Any member of the public can set up an account and it is easy to do. If you log onto the IMMOBILISE site you simply set up an account with your personal details and then you can record any items of value that you own with a description and serial number. You can record any electronic devices, cycles, indeed any item of value that you can provide details for. If any of your property is stolen you can then record it as such on the IMMOBILISE site and should it be recovered by the Police then it can be identified easily and returned to you. Not only does the IMMOBILISE site make returning your property easier it can assist greatly in proving offences against individuals found with these items in their possession. If you have any questions or queries contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team by calling 101. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 49

14, 15, 16 MARCH 2014. THE MILTON ROOMS, MALTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE

T

he Yorkshire Cajun & Zydeco Festival is fast establishing itself in the calendar for enthusiasts from all over Britain and Europe. It is also introducing this fabulous Louisiana music, dance and entire culture to a local public who may otherwise not come across one of the best kept secrets of the music and dance world. After two highly successful festivals, this year’s promises to be bigger and better still with great bands, dance and music workshops and Cajun food. Plus, new for this year, the chance to experience an authentic Louisiana Mardi Gras celebration as the Milton Rooms will be transformed on the Sunday (16th March) with banners, bunting and beads and festivalgoers will be encouraged to dress up and wear costumes and masks!

The line-up of live bands is now complete: Visiting us from Europe is fabulous young Dutch band - FRONT ROW ZYDECO. After their brilliant performance last year, Phil Underwood brings his band COLIN AND THE CRAWFISH back to Yorkshire. British Cajun & Zydeco star Gavin Lewery makes his debut at our festival with two of his bands LITTLE EASY and CHANKY CHANK. Returning again is our very own local band THE WANDERING ACES. Performing on our special Mardi Gras Sunday we have the highly visual and entertaining ROUGH CHOWDER. Finally, something of a scoop, making their UK festival debut – a brand new Cajun band from Scotland we have BLUEBELL CAJUN DANCE BAND. Once again a ‘star’ of the festival will be the Milton Rooms itself, with its great sprung dance floor and plenty of room for dancers and those who like to sit and watch the bands and the dancing.

Full details of bands, programme and anything else you may want to know can be found on the website www.yorkshirecajun.com or telephone 07786 040734 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

SHORT STORY THE SECRET ADMIRER by Jackie Brewster

“Can you be trusted to mind the café while I nip next door?” Aunt Carol asked solemnly as though she was leaving Becky in charge of the country. It was a big responsibility, and this was only Becky’s third day. The lunchtime rush was over, and there had been no customers for nearly an hour. While Becky was grateful to Carol for giving her a holiday job, she found that buttering cobs was not as easy as they made it look on television. She suspected Carol wasn’t convinced she had what it took to be a success in catering. “Whatever you do,” Carol warned her, “don’t let that rat chap in.” Which seemed both a strange and reasonable request. Left alone, Becky practised folding napkins until she heard the café door open. An elderly gentleman, smartly dressed, sat down at the table by the window. Becky took a deep breath, picked up her order pad and walked briskly over to him. “What can I get you, sir?” she asked. He was wearing a jacket which appeared to be wriggling. A small furry nose popped up between the lapels. Becky nearly dropped her pencil. “Oh, don’t worry about him,” the man said. “He’s fine.” “Pets aren’t allowed in the café,” Becky said nervously. She was almost certain this was true because she’d read a sign in the window. “Roland’s not a pet,” the man 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

replied, browsing the menu. “He’s a guide dog, and they’re perfectly welcome everywhere.” “But you’re not blind,” Becky said, a little embarrassed. “Of course everyone immediately thinks of guide dogs for the blind.” He closed the menu as though he found nothing appetising within it. “Roland’s an allergy guide dog. Have you heard of that?” Becky confessed she had not. “I am allergic to parma violets,” the man continued confidentially. “Roland has to sniff my food to confirm it’s safe to eat.” “Allergic to parma violets?” Becky repeated blankly. “Dangerously.” The man nodded sagely and tapped the menu. “Can you recommend anything that doesn’t include parma violets?” Becky was confused. Parma violets were little purple sweets - she had no idea they were also a cooking ingredient. “I don’t think there’s any in the tea,” Becky said hopefully. The man frowned, “Can you guarantee it?” She shook her head. “In that case, it’s a good job I have Roland here.” He pulled Roland out of his jacket and sat him in his lap. He was a funny looking dog, with short legs, a pointy nose and a long body. “What type of dog is he?” Becky asked.

“He’s an allergy dog, we’ve been through this.” The man waved his hand dismissively. “Be quick with the tea dear, I’ve a plane to catch.” Becky hurried back behind the counter. Something didn’t feel right about the man and his allergy dog. She hoped he would drink up and go before her aunt returned. After all, the nearest airport was a two hour drive. She was not in luck. Carol bustled into the café carrying a box of crisps. “Any customers?” she asked. “Not really,” Becky lied as she overflowed the teacup. “So who’s that for?” Carol asked dubiously. “The gentleman over there.” Carol turned round and almost exploded. “Not you again,” she screamed. “Get that rat out of here!” The man scooped up Roland protectively. “He’s not a rat,” he said indignantly. “He’s a ferret, and they’re very clever animals.” “He sniffs parma violets,” Becky added to explain the situation. And with that, her fate in the world of catering was sealed.
