elcome to the May edition! With longer days and better weather, there is so much more to do in May from gardening to DIY to having a bite to eat in your local pub. We are so lucky in this part of Yorkshire to have such a huge range of foodie businesses to choose from and May is a great month for sampling local food and drink. Our small independent suppliers are passionate about what they do so if you are in any doubt about what you can do with their ingredients, my advice would be to go and talk to them. They are always full of advice on the best way to enjoy local produce. One of the best places to do this is at local festivals and markets, where you can see (and sometimes even sample) their food and chat direct with business owners. The Malton Food Lovers Festival (23-24 May) has a star line-up with Prue Leith, Levi Roots, Valentine Warner and more, all heading to Malton this year. It will be a great place to re-discover our foodie roots. This year at the Festival, the Handy Mag team are sponsoring the treasure trail with Yorkshire puds to be found around town and a great prize for the winner. We are also on hand over the

weekend running our Festival Selfie competition! Come and say hello to us. It is what we love best about running our magazines – meeting our readers and other businesses and hearing about what you get up to in the area. May also brings a cycling frenzy back to Yorkshire with the Tour de Yorkshire through a large part of our area from 1st to 3rd May. On Days 1 and 2, the Tour will travel through the Handy Mag distribution area. Why not get out on the route to cheer on the peloton? Well done to Mrs Murphy (Nether Poppleton) and Mr Maslen (Haxby) for winning our February and March competitions. Until next month…

A

lan Holliday, of Alan Holliday Builders, is a man who takes a great deal of pride in the work he does.

Keeping the customer happy matters too. Any job will start with the whole process being explained very carefully, without jargon. “I want the customer on board from the outset. I am happy to give all the advice I can, so the customer can make an informed choice, and the right decision”, says Alan. A bricklayer by trade, Alan and his team work alongside other local businesses to offer the full complement of building services. And they have just added to their team: local man Bill Lansell, a labourer. They do most of their work with domestic properties, but they have also been employed regularly by Haxby Parish Council and York City Council’s Tenants’ Choice. Their latest client is a charitable trust - Sir

John Hunt Holmes memorial cottages. Alan adds: “We work closely with a lot of the local, well-known tradesmen. As we live and work in the local community, we make sure we take pride in what we do and give our customers the best possible quality of service we can.” This quality of service includes minimising the sense of disruption and intrusion that goes with any building job - but ALH Builders Ltd will talk to you about what they can do to make things run as smoothly as possible for you and your family, while they are busy on-site. Give ALH Builders a call. No job too small – from insulating rooms, to fixing small roofing repairs to building driveways and extensions.

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK... TRAIL walk the trails and stand and stare at the weird and wonderful straw men, set a new record by raising a remarkable £4,700. This was shared between Martin House Children’s Hospice “Good Night’s Sleep Appeal” and other local charities.

T

widdling your thumbs this bank holiday weekend? Well, a rather special annual phenomenon is taking place over this weekend that would have involved quite a bit of thumb twiddling –with straw. It is, of course, the Haxby and Wigginton Scarecrow Festival.

This year the organisers are once again supporting the work of Phambili ngeThemba, a church charity supporting a community in Cape Town devastated by a fire. The Festival started in 2007 after a 13 year old from the church visited a project in South Africa that supports people in townships. She was so moved by what she saw that she wanted to do something to raise their profile and raise money so came up with the idea of a Scarecrow Festival. Tim Black, the project co-ordinator at Phambili in South Africa, will be coming with his wife to help over the weekend. This year alongside Phambilli they will be supporting the York Street Angels, Jumbulance, The Island, Haxby Memorial Hall Trust Fund, Wonder Years, Haxby Helpers, Oaken Grove Community and Churchfield Open Space. Details of all the charities will be available throughout the weekend and a whole lot more at the church including refreshments, quiet reflection room and face painting.

And these two close-knit communities are pretty experienced at running the show. Now in its ninth year, you’ll certainly get a giggle and your money’s worth. With dozens of scarecrows, different length trails and tea and homemade cake, surely there is no better way to spend a day in the spring sunshine? Characters from children’s classics, comic book heroes and the fantasy world of video games stole the show last year. But we are sure one year we saw an incarnation of Mary Berry having cake with Paul Hollywood, and Nessie in the Haxby Pond on York Road and in Wyre Pond opposite the Methodist Church!

So polish up your ruby slippers and head over to Haxby and Wigginton for a lovely day out. We can’t guarantee that you’ll see Dorothy and Toto, the Tin Man or the Cowardly Lion or that the sun will be shining, but we can guarantee that a whole lot of inventive ideas, hard work, effort and copious amounts of straw will be on show for all to see!

Last year was an astonishing year for this local scarecrow festival, not just because of some memorable entries, but a new fundraising record was set. The thousands of visitors, who travelled to

The 9th Festival will be held over the 2nd, 3rd & 4th May. So put the dates in your diary. Trails are on sale in the church at £2.50 each from 10am to 4.30pm. Refreshments are available from 10am to 5.30pm.

JEN’S COLUMN

Horseracing in York By Jen Grimble

Horseracing has been etched on the British sporting calendar since the 12th century. York was one of the first cities to embrace it, and to this day we enjoy an array of annual equestrian events. With the first races of the season in May, we prepare for another year of sunshine and fancy headwear.

was new transport systems and television. These three factors gave York a sporting boost; our Roman roots and our impeccable transport links made the city one of the country’s most popular racing venues. It is claimed that we have hosted equestrian events for over 2,000 years, while records show that races took place on a frozen River Ouse in 1607. During the 18th century, Clifton began hosting meets, but due to its proximity to the flood-prone river, the site soon closed.

The Romans, the Royal Family and modern technology all contributed to the success of British horseracing. Roman chariots sparked our interest, while monarchic support invited us to celebrate its traditions. Perhaps the most important element in the success of racing

By 1731 the Knavesmire had become our permanent

racecourse, with competitions coinciding with court sessions, so that the on-site gallows, erected in 1379, could be utilised for race-day entertainment. This lively atmosphere increased the sport’s popularity and by 1754 the first Grandstand, designed by local architect, John Carr, was opened. The project was financed by 250 locals, who in return, were granted free access to the course. To show their status, the benefactors wore brass brooches, which would later influence the modern County Stand Badges we see today. So it seems our racing story is as interesting as our social one. York still boasts one of the best courses in the country, so pack a picnic, or don your finest attire, and head to the Knavesmire, a racecourse brimming with stories.

Stockton Day Nursery implements the Early Years Curriculum - the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The team are continually working towards developing the Nursery and have already made fun, bright changes to the internal décor along with exciting changes in new activities designed to help children learn through play. We are very lucky to have an amazing outdoor area to explore and investigate and we are currently adding to

the resources in this area. The Nursery is open 51 weeks per year, 7.30 – 18.30 daily Monday – Friday. We also offer wrap-around-care for children aged 5 to 11 years, all year round - this is called The Wood-Pecker Club. We are holding an OPEN DAY on Saturday 16th May 2015 from 12.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. for existing families and prospective new families to look around the setting, see all our exciting changes, join in with some fun activities and meet our team of staff. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

IS YOUR BUSINESS READY FOR AUTO ENROLMENT??

Y

ou may have seen the adverts on TV with groups of workers shouting “We’re all in!” but what exactly are they going on about? Well, Auto Enrolment is the biggest change to workplace pensions in over a decade, and is basically the process of employers enrolling their workers in to a pension scheme. If you’re a business owner and employ people, you will be receiving a letter from the Pensions Regulator on what you are expected to do.

What is Auto-enrolment?

Auto-enrolment is the Governments way of encouraging people to save into a pension, and it requires businesses to have a work based pension scheme. Qualifying employees are then “automatically” enrolled and the employee and employer both pay contributions into it. Qualifying employees are those who are aged between 22 and state pension age, and earn over £10,000 per year.

Will Auto-enrolment affect my business?

If you own a business and employ people then this will affect you, and you will need to make sure you comply with the strict rules and deadlines set by the Pensions Regulator. However, if you own your own limited company and are the only director and employee, it may not apply to your business.

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

What do I need to do?

• WHEN – find out your Staging Date – the date by which you need to comply with the new rules – this is set by the Pensions Regulator and depends on how many employees you have. Most small businesses staging date will be between 2015 and 2017. It is recommended you start planning 12 months in advance. • HOW – you need to find a suitable Pension Scheme. For small businesses there are a handful of providers, including NEST (set up by the Government specifically for Auto-enrolment). The scheme you chose will depend on cost, quality and investment profile. • WHO – once you have your scheme, your need to: - Assess your workforce – consider who are qualifying employees, and who needs to be automatically enrolled. - Communicate with your workforce – tell all your employees about the pension changes and explain their options. Employees who don’t qualify may still be eligible to join. - Automatically enrol your qualifying employees – the relevant employees join the pension scheme. - Pay contributions into the pension – minimum contributions must be paid into the scheme from both employer and employee combined.

Do employees have to join?

Qualifying employees have to be automatically enrolled but can chose to “opt out” and leave the scheme within a month, and receive a refund of any contributions.

If you employ people and want to know more on how Auto-enrolment affects you, or how we can help run your scheme, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@ pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information.

Coach, Counsellor, Supervisor, Trainer & Consultant Counselling provides the client (or clients if it is relationship counselling) with a safe, confidential space where they can talk about anything that is causing them difficulty. As the counsellor I help the client feel safe and supported, so that together we can explore their issues at depth, from differing perspectives. I work from the humanistic principle that each of us has the resources to live in a fulfilling way; through counselling we address what is making that difficult to achieve. Common examples of issues that people bring to counselling include: anxiety, grief, depression, obsessions, fears, addictive behaviour, anger, trauma and abuse, stress, challenging decisions, difficulties in relationships and significant life changes. Typically my clients say that after counselling they feel better able to manage their feelings, trust their own judgement, speak their truth in relationships, have greater clarity about their choices and take action. The coaching I offer is focussed on helping clients achieve everything they can in their work. My coaching clients include entrepreneurs who are running their own businesses and want to talk about concerns such as: developing a clear plan for their business, sorting out their business priorities, setting realistic goals and targets, increasing their self-confidence when dealing with customers and employees and keeping some time for their personal and family life. Top Tips from a dental professional

PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY

Most of you will be familiar with what dentists do such as examinations and fillings, if you are unlucky you will also have experienced extractions.

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Modern dentistry is far more complex and it presents you and your dentist with many more choices than previously.

Hovingham is 20 miles North of York, between Helmsley and Malton on B1257

Your dentist should perform an examination of your mouth for signs of oral cancer as detected early it has a much better outcome. This is one of the best reasons for attending regularly for a dental check, as growths can become very difficult to treat by the time you may notice something is not right. We can also assess your diet and patterns of eating to allocate your risk level of dental decay, there are even test kits which can measure the presence of bacteria that cause dental decay and gum disease. Other things we can measure are your susceptibility to gum disease, erosion and tooth wear. Your dentist may ask to a lot more questions than they used to 5 years ago. This is because they are assessing your individual risk for further dental disease. Once they have assessed your risk they can then tailor advice to that risk and give you specific information on reducing your need for further dental treatment.

EMILY... ON VOTING

It is safe to say election fever is upon us, as the 7th May draws ever closer the likes of David Cameron and Ed Miliband occupy the space of every newspaper and news channel as they try to win over the last few undecided voters. As they debate issues such as the economy and health care, it is all too easy for younger voters such as myself to be turned off at the thought of politics, thinking the issues simply don’t apply to our lives. However, this could not be further from the truth. As cliché as it may sound, younger voters are the future and thus their ballot is often the most important. Personally, as a bit of a politics nerd, turning 18 was an exciting time for me because I knew that I could finally cast my vote in an election. Whilst young people can be politically active, it is often startling the vast numbers that don’t turn out to vote on election day. It is too easy to think that our votes won’t make a difference and that turning out to vote is a waste of time and effort. This negative mind-set is not one present just in young people, but felt by many in society. The fanfare of Westminster can sometimes feel a million miles away from our little Yorkshire towns and villages. But, we all attend the doctor’s surgeries. We all drive on government-owned roads. Schools, colleges and libraries are all government institutions. Public transport is a vital part of our lives in the UK. These are all affected by the way we choose to vote. So if you want change, or even if you want things to stay the same, then taking a few minutes out of your day on May 7th is the easiest way to do it. After all, you only get one and it would be a shame to waste it. Emily 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Tour de Yorkshire at Dalby – a day out for everyone Dalby Forest is readying itself for the most exciting sporting event to come to the region in 2015 and one of the biggest cycle gatherings in the UK. The world-status cycle race visits Dalby on day one, Friday 1 May, meaning a grueling challenge to riders and a perfect day out for spectators. The field of world class riders will want to come out on top of the first points section of stage one. Located at Bickley Bank this is the chance to claim King of the Mountain glory and set down a marker for the whole tour.

The best views and fun for all

Dalby boasts four ideal viewing areas including: • Cote de Dalby: King of the Mountains, Bickley Bank (including a bike park). • Adderstone Field: Parking for up to 1000 cars, a climbing wall and a large screen showing the race. • Staindale: Cyclists have to navigate a tight hairpin corner and pass by Staindale Lake’s beautiful conservation area. • Haygate: A perfect setting to catch the cyclists as they navigate from Low Dalby passing Haygate before they leave the forest.

A family-friendly Yorkshire welcome The Tour de Yorkshire at Dalby will be a real family affair and offers a safe venue for kids to watch elite professionals and get caught up in the excitement of a live race. Special events and facilities on the day: • The Forestry Commission is reducing vehicle entry to the forest to only £4.00 per car. • Visitors by car will also receive a free return visit voucher to be used later in 2015. • Dalby Activity Centre will be open for Yorkshirethemed paint ball targets and refreshments. • Events and facilities at Adderstone Field and a bike bank at Bickley Bank for the day. • The courtyard café and Forest Café at the visitor centre, Low Dalby will serve up Yorkshire specialities to add a local flavour to the day.

Tour de Dalby Sportive

offering a unique chance to ride a section of the Tour de Yorkshire route in Dalby Forest – just hours before the competitors themselves pass through. Sportives are a great way to get into organised cycling events, giving riders the chance to complete a fully signed, timed and supported ride in a relaxed environment. There’s no need to feel intimidated as Sportives are primarily fun, non-competitive days out on your bike with like-minded people. Sportive Event features: • Entry fee is £10 per adult, kids £5. A family of four is £25 (including free entry and parking in Dalby Forest). • Enter online at www.dalbybikebarn.co.uk. Day entries available only if event is not full (£12/£7/£30). • Circular 10k route on the picturesque trafficcalmed Forest Drive. • Start and end location at Adderstone Field with parking, kids play area, toilets, refreshments and activites. • Bike hire available including a helmet and puncture repair kit if needed. • Family-friendly, safe and fun for kids. • Attractive to a wide range of riders looking for a fun and easy introduction to sportives with likeminded riders. • Mechanical support and a feed/drink station. • Keen enthusiasts can ride the Tour de Dalby Sportive, watch the Tour de Yorkshire race whizz by, then pedal down the beautiful Forge Valley and watch the race finish in Scarborough (approximately 11 miles). The Dalby Sportive offers the thrill of being part of a group of riders riding an inaugural event, discovering the amazing views along the Forest Drive, the chance to make new friends along the way and then watch the elite riders straight after.

For those that want to experience the true cycling experience, the Tour de Dalby Sportive is a fun race

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

ANNIVERSARY SALE UPTO 50% OFF just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big

investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the

COLD CALLERS By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 Everybody within the City of York at some point will be contacted by a Cold Caller, either by telephone or on your doorstep. It is important to stress that the vast majority of these calls or visits are from entirely legitimate businesses and as annoying as their timing can be there are no offences being committed. There are however criminals who will use a cold call to commit an offence. In the worst of cases these can result in the victim losing many thousands of pounds. As the weather improves many of us will be considering making improvements to the outdoor spaces of our homes. There are many local and national businesses who will be happy to do this work, although there are often local tradesmen who will offer to do the works for considerably less. This does not in itself indicate that they are not legitimate however you should be wary. Criminals will often quote for works and offer what appears to be a very competitive price. Once you have agreed to have this work undertaken though they will often come to you and state that there is further works need doing and give you a new price to include this. On many occasions the actual work that they have done is either unnecessary or of a poor quality as well and will need to be made good afterwards. These criminals will target the most vulnerable in Society and will think nothing of even driving these victims to a cash point to make them take out even more cash to pay for this work. Many of these offences go unreported as the victim is often embarrassed or fears losing their independence if they are elderly or otherwise vulnerable and falls victim to these scams. If you do have any worries about any traders that come to your door you can contact the Police or Trading Standards who will work together to bring these offenders to justice. If they have left any flyers or notes with contact details on please keep these as they can be very useful in any investigation. Also keep an eye out for any vulnerable neighbours or relatives.

HONK! IF YOU ARE COMING TO SEE US! US

S

poiler alert! Soon Ugly wakes up and realises he is not a duck, but a swan. Recognise the story line? Of course you do! And it happens to be York Light Youth’s next big production, at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. Honk! is a musical comedy, re-telling the tale of Hans Christian Andersen’s, The Ugly Duckling. The Daily Telegraph announced Honk! as, ‘an exuberant smash hit’, and Time Out described it as, ‘stonkingly brilliant’. With music by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles, who wrote Betty Blue Eyes and the music for Mary Poppins, it’s a show just stuffed with lyrical, catchy and memorable songs. Honk! opened on the West End in December 1999 at The Royal National Theatre in London; the following year it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical.

is lost and Jackdawor begins to interview Ida for “Birdwatch UK”. The magical farce in Act 2, when the farm Cat - the villain of the show - enters, poorly disguised as a duck, who then falls in love with Queenie – a domesticated cat - but Queenie thinks he’s a duck, but when he removes his disguise, she falls in love with him. You get the idea? I hope you followed that. Underscoring all the fun, there is a serious message for the younger members in the audience though, and it’s one of tolerance: accepting difference and not being swift to judge others.

Running during the Spring Bank Holiday week, and with a Saturday matinee, it’s a real family event with a wonderful story, everyone loves Ugly now he’s a swan, truly memorable songs and lots and lots of laughter. Honk! The story of the ugly duckling is on at Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York from 27-30 May 2015. Evenings and a Saturday matinee.

Always embracing new challenges, York Light Youth is a very busy theatre group that last October put on Les Miserables to great acclaim. Honk! has 44 cast members and an age range of 8 to 18. With a band on stage, this is going to be a show stacked with boundless fun and energy. With songs like ‘Warts and all, sung by the bullfrog (of course!), ‘Wild Goose Chase’, ‘Hold your Head Up High’ and ‘Look at Him’, the songs cleverly chart the transformation of ugly duckling to beautiful swan. There is humour – a lot of it. Wait for the scene where Ugly 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Koreans unleashed a whole raft of silly, inappropriate or misunderstood monikers: Hyundai “Accent” - nothing wrong with that per se, except the script style typeface at a quick glance looks like “effluent”. From Kia: The Cee’d (don’t forget the apostrophe!) Hyundai again: The Pony - never a truer word said. But it won’t end there, because coming over the horizon are the Chinese. With a manufacturing industry geared to produce just about everything, mass car export is just a matter of time and with it some more silly names.

A BIG

WELL DONE

SHERIFF HUTTON JUMBLIES!

MAJOR REFURBISHMENT The York Cats Protection Adoption Centre based on Huntington Road is set to undergo a major refurbishment from mid-April – the biggest revamp in 20-years – which will require the Centre to temporarily close for around three months. Funded entirely by generous donations, the much needed new-look centre will ensure that the branch is able to meet the needs of unwanted cats and kittens of York, and the surrounding area, for the next 20-years and beyond. At present the buildings on the site are wooden sheds that are well past their best. By replacing these with purpose built buildings and by replacing the older wooden pens with brand new UPVC pens, it will enable the branch to maintain its high standards of cat care. The branch also intends to use this time to make essential repairs to other existing cat pens to both extend their lifespan and to make improvements for cat welfare. Furthermore the refurbishment will also see the layout of the Adoption Centre improving so the branch will be able to offer an even better and more efficient cat adoption experience for its customers, and of course for the cats in its care. James Hodgkinson, Adoption Centre Manager, said: “We’ve helped to re-home over 100 cats and kittens already this year but with ever increasing demand on our services we need to ensure our centre continues to offer the best quality of care. The newlook centre will ensure we can continue to meet the needs of unwanted cats and kittens of York, and the surrounding area, for the generations to come. We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has, and continues to, generously donate towards the centre. Without them this wouldn’t be possible.”

The team have raised a staggering £250,000 for charities and good causes since they started back in 1986!!!

Any cats which aren’t rehomed before the closure close will be transferred to other Cats Protection Adoption Centres close by.

The Jumblies are a hugely successful team of volunteers who expertly organise a programme of jumble sales each year. They work alongside many support groups to raise money for local organisations and local and national charities.

Although the Centre itself will be temporarily closed, York Cats Protection will still be offering support and advice during the renovations through its local helpline 01904 760356 (Mon- Fri 9am -5pm) or email york@ cats.org.uk)

For more information about the group contact 01347 878392 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

For more information about the refurbishment follow York Cats Protection on Facebook (facebook.com/YorkCatsProtection) or Twitter (twitter.com/yorkcats) for regular updates. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th May

F

rom decking to fencing, summer houses to log cabins, Apex Shed and Fencing Specialists, near Strensall, can offer high quality timber products along with excellent customer service. An established small family business which started in 2002, Apex began by making simple fence panels and trellis work at home for local landscape gardeners and fencing contractors. Their reputation for quality and value has grown and Apex now manufacture and retail fences, sheds and other garden timber products at their large workshop off Pottery Lane, Strensall. Ricky Bellhouse, his brother Brett, sister Toni and their staff have a vast knowledge of timber products and offers free advice to customers. Ricky says “We

are keen for our customers to leave with the correct product for their particular circumstances. DIY enthusiasts are welcomed! Our timber ranges should have a long life and stand up to all the British weather can throw at them.” Ricky is keen for customers to visit their site in Strensall where there is a huge range of fencing, sheds and garden furniture on display. Many products are unique to Apex so the showroom is worth a visit if you are considering timber products for your garden. Personally I didn’t know there was such an enormous range of fencing! Apex have also teamed up with several market-leading suppliers to provide a collection of timber products designed to offer the perfect decorative solution for your garden environment, providing space, privacy and security.

Being a modern company they are also aware of the impact of their consumption on our natural resources and the products they supply are produced from timber certified in accordance with FSC and PEFC rules, ensuring minimal environmental damage by replanting saplings to create new forests. Ricky says “Your outdoor space is there to be enjoyed so why not get some inspiration from our show site where you will find many of our products on display. GARDENING Going Potty By Pippa Greenwood

I

am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of course gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in. There are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak? You can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end.

YORK • MAY 2015 • ISSUE 112 Old footwear can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well but a pair of wellies may need a few holes. As I mentioned drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun!
