elcome to the May edition of the Handy Mag, your community magazine, business directory and guide to what’s happening in your area. Recently I was asked “What makes a great community?” Every edition Nicky and I are amazed by the amount of community events and local groups that we are asked to publicise in the Handy Mag. I think it all comes down to people caring about their local area, all those who contribute to making it a great place to live, and everyone being able to feel part of that community, whatever your age. Is ours a great community? Certainly York comes high up the list of the best places to live in the UK. There is an army of volunteers in the area who help in a huge variety of ways to make our communities better from seed sharing groups, festival organisers and scarecrow-makers to charity fundraisers,

library volunteers, scout leaders and enthusiastic event-goers! Hooray for York! If you’d like to get involved, whatever your interests, you will find an organisation in our pages who need your help. Our community is also served by a huge range of fantastic businesses, run by local people, who need our support to keep our city and villages vibrant and interesting places to live and work. This month sees crowds flock to the villages for annual community events. The Haxby and Wigginton Scarecrow Trail is a highlight of the calendar, and you may even spot a Handy Mag offering on the trail this year! The Poppleton Sports Day brings the community together to celebrate the bank holiday weekend with May Pole dancing and entertainment to please all. Let’s enjoy and celebrate what we have to offer on our doorstep! You can find much more to do in our events listings this month. Well done to Sam Ayres for winning the March competition.

CAN YOU HELP? On 6 June, four friends from York are cycling 250 miles from Wembley Stadium to Stade de France, Paris arriving in time for the opening game of Euro 2016, to raise vital funds for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF). In 2014, Billy, the son of one of the cyclists, had major heart surgery to save his life at just two weeks old. Billy is now a happy and healthy toddler. The CHSF were a great source of help during a very difficult time and the team want to raise awareness and funds to help provide training and equipment for the Children’s Hospital. 10 YEARS OF SCARECROW 30 April, Sunday FESTIVAL FUN Saturday 1 May and Monday 2 May.
A
s we approach the first Bank Holiday weekend in May, it can only mean one thing – get your straw at the ready! Yes, the Haxby and Wigginton Scarecrow Festival is celebrating its 10th year! This extremely popular event is definitely worth visiting, and every year the stakes or should we say straw, are upped! With dozens of scarecrows, different trail lengths, tea and homemade cakes and ice creams, you will be sure to witness a spectacular event in all its glory as these two close-knit villages showcase their best offerings while raising money for good causes.
Characters from children’s classics and cartoons, alongside scary space aliens, dinosaurs and monsters lined the streets last year. There was a towering Xenomorph lurking somewhere along The Village and a mermaid keeping watch in Wyre Pond! Scarecrows first came to Haxby and Wigginton back in 2007, after a 13 year old from the Church visited a project in South Africa that supports people in townships. She was so moved by what she saw that she wanted to raise their profile and raise money so came up with the idea of a scarecrow festival. Since then, the Festival has really grown and now supports lots of local charities aswell.
wonderful work of St Leonards Hospice, along with other local voluntary organisations. This is also a milestone year for St Leonards as they are celebrating 30 years of caring for local people. Details of all the charities will be available throughout the weekend at the Methodist Church. This year will also see a first for the Handy Mag team as we will be attempting a creation of our own! See if you can spot it on your way round ….and no giggling!
Last year’s festival hit an all new fundraising record of a whopping £4,900. This supported the work of Phambili ngeThemba in Cape Town as well as local charities, Jumbulance, Street Angels York, The Island, Wigginton Church Fields, Memorial Hall Trust, Oaken Grove Community Centre, Haxby Helpers, Wonder Years. This year, the organisers are delighted to be supporting the
The 10th Festival will be held on Saturday 30 April, Sunday 1 May and Monday 2 May. There will be trails of varying lengths around Haxby and Wigginton. Trails will cost £2.50 and will be available in the Methodist Church from 10am to 4.30pm (4pm on the Monday). Follow us on twitter – @HWScarecrowFest. #hwsf16 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

IT’S A MYSTERY Few things beat curling up with a good mystery. Whether you prefer a classic whodunit, a gritty crime novel, or a supernatural thriller, there’s sure to be something to tempt you in our pick of the latest releases.
In the Dark, In the Woods
Eliza Wass While aimed at the young adult audience, In the Dark, In the Woods definitely crosses the age barrier. Castley Cresswell lives with her siblings, broken mother and domineering father, in a rundown house in the woods. Her father tells her that they are the chosen ones, and that he is God’s conduit. As with all teenagers, Castley struggles with being ‘different’ from her school peers, and starts to question her parents’ ideology. Will she find the strength to break free from her father? Will he let her?
Quiet Neighbors
Catriona McPherson Needing a place to run, Jude flees to a Scottish town, and the quiet solace of the tumble-down bookstore. Staying in a gravedigger’s cottage, she begins to unravel some of the town’s closely-guarded secrets. This is a novel of quiet mysteries to puzzle over, rather than a gruesome whodunit. Nevertheless, the characters will keep you turning the pages until night has fallen and your tea has long gone cold.
Switcheroo
Aaron Elkins Switched identities, unsolved murders and a gorgeous setting to boot, Switcheroo has them all. This is Elkins’ 18th book featuring the forensic anthropologist Gideon Oliver, and fans say it’s one of the best to date. Investing a cold case in Jersey dating from the 1960s, Gideon discovers a web of deceit, dating to before the war, when two boys were swapped by their fathers. Not quite as gripping as some in the genre, Switcheroo is nevertheless a very enjoyable read.
What She Never Told Me
Kate McQuaile Back in Ireland due to her mother’s death, Louise is hoping to finally find out who her father is. Does a stranger hold the answers? Who is the little girl in 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
her memories and why do they leave her feeling so unsettled? A psychological thriller with twists and turns aplenty, this could well end up on this year’s bestseller list. Prepare to put everything aside for a few hours, as you won’t want to put it down. A must for fans of Before I go to Sleep, Girl on a Train and Little Face.
The Deadlock Trilogy Box Set
P.T. Hylton If you like your mysteries to have a supernatural edge to them, and more than a touch of horror, The Deadlock Trilogy needs to be on your wish list. Convict Frank returns to his childhood home - a backwater town in Tennessee - to find that things have taken a turn for the bizarre. Brilliantly original, well-plotted and skilfully narrated, this trilogy is a real find. Perfect for fans of early Stephen King.
The Hollow Men
Rob McCarthy Police surgeon Dr Harry Kent is known as a man with a weakness for lost causes. So when a teenager takes a group of people hostage, then later seems to be in clear danger himself, Harry can’t help but get involved. As he works to find out what drove the boy to such desperate measures, Harry starts to uncover a trail of deception and cruelty. Gritty, tense and fast paced, this is the first in a new series starring Dr Harry Kent, and fans are already clamouring for more. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd May

Need PlaNs drawiNg?
WHAT IS DOTPEEN? By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 As the weather improves we start to spend more time in our gardens or out on cycles or similar. Most of us keep a variety of power tools in our garage or shed, and in general the locks on these doors are easier to force than on the rest of your property. During the spring and summer it is not uncommon to find garages or sheds left open as residents retrieve items and use them at the rear of their property. Those of us with children are aware that once they have retrieved their cycle or scooter to use they do not always shut and lock the garage/ shed door. A passing opportunistic thief will seize on any opportunity to enter a garage or similar and take power tools or cycles. The easiest way to prevent yourself becoming a victim of such a crime is to make sure that all garages/sheds are left secure after you use them. If the door is closed a thief cannot see if there is anything of value inside and if the door is locked, then they will look to target easier properties. There are a number of locks, alarms and other security devices that you can purchase to make your garages more secure. If you take a few moments to look in your garages/sheds you will be amazed just how much you have in there and the value of your property. You can also arrange to have your property security marked by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We use the Dotpeen machine which leaves a permanent mark on almost any item. It will engrave your details onto the surface of your property and can be used on metal, plastic and wood. It only takes a matter of moments and will make items far less desirable for a thief and much easier for the Police to identify as stolen should the worst happen. There are property marking events arranged by your local Police team which will be advertised on Twitter/website, but we are also happy to attend your home address at a time convenient to yourselves. Contact your local Team via the 101 telephone number or by email to arrange this free service. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

THE EDUCATIONAL GAP BY MARY MAHON
As summer draws nearer, people generally think of their holidays, the weather and the beauty of the world at this time, but for the vast majority of the younger generation, summertime also means something else: exams Schools and colleges now offer so many different, optional courses to choose from, ranging from learning ancient, extinct languages such as Latin, to special effects make-up, to abstract maths. People truly have the world at their fingertips, able to pursue any dream they desire, however, whilst it’s great to revel in all that the education system offers, there are also equally worrying gaps. All throughout school life, young people are taught fundamental subjects such as maths, science and English up until the final compulsory year, at which point students tackle challenging and complex formulae such as the quadratic equations, understand the incredible life cycle of a star and can quote and analyse the works of William Shakespeare. Now, whilst this curriculum is vastly significant in creating cultured, diverse people who will one day be leading our future, it also just as important to note what young people are not learning.

Biology is studied for a minimum of five years, yet basic first aid is not time-tabled in with it and the delicate but crucial subject of mental health is largely neglected too. When learning about the history of the world, why are lessons explaining our own justice system and laws ignored? School leavers often graduate with an unclear view on how to do taxes, how to vote or even what our 30 basic human rights are; we live in a society where we aren’t taught a lot about the basics of our reality. Essentially, we absorb a lot of impressive, intellectual content, however that isn’t to say what we are taught isn’t important for real life! Yes, a lot of things may never come in handy (personally I don’t see when my knowledge of longitudinal or transverse waves will ever help me), but in the end whatever education you’re provided with is a brilliant opportunity. Knowledge is power, after all.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE
The Grass Can Be Greener By Pippa Greenwood
Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started. PREPARING THE SITE Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in
grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flat-soled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary. BUYING TURF Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade.
A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly. LAYING THE TURF Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour.
Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of. SHORT STORY THE DITHERING DOTTIES by Jackie Brewster
Martha was thankful that the sun had finally decided to shine. Since moving into her new house she had been so busy decorating that she had not given any thought to the increasingly overgrown garden that accompanied it. She had never been a particularly enthusiastic gardener, but even she could see that the weeds were now outnumbering the plants. Naturally, four your old Rosie didn’t mind. She was happy scrambling between old runner bean canes, chattering away to herself, looking for snails. Martha wondered whether her granddaughter’s boisterous presence would give the Dithering Dotties something else to whinge about. The two elderly sisters next door were her only neighbours, but since she moved in they had done nothing but tut about the squeaking of her front gate, refused to accept parcels on her behalf and twitched their curtains every time she left the house. “Are you ready for a drink Rosie?” she called, “All this playing is thirsty work isn’t it?” The cheerful four year old bounced to her feet and came running over. “Grandma, you know the fairies that live at the bottom of your garden?” Rosie asked breathlessly.
Martha snorted with laughter. “Those fairies don’t think much of my gardening do they?” “No,” Rosie shook her head. “They said Mr Primton did a better job than you.” Martha looked at the child curiously. “What do you know about Mr Primton?” she asked. “Nothing,” Rosie guzzled her drink noisily, “Who’s he?” “He’s the man who used to live in this house,” Martha said. “The fairies liked him better than you,” Rosie said decisively. “Yes, they did.” Martha glanced suspiciously at the house next door, and frowned. “Did the fairies sound like boys or girls?” she prompted. “All fairies are girls,” Rosie said with authority. “How many of them were there?” Martha continued, “Two?” The child pondered.
Martha smiled. “Yes dear.”
“Maybe,” she said finally.
“I heard them talking just now.”
“I knew it!” Martha muttered with annoyance. Didn’t those two ditherers have something better to gossip about?
“Oh really? What did they say?” “They said you should clear out the leaves from your guttering.” “That’s nice.” Martha handed the child a beaker of juice. “Grandma.” “Yes, dear.” “What’s guttering?” “It’s the pipe the rain runs down.” Martha was amused. “Did the fairies say anything else?” “Yes. They said just because you can never completely get rid of bindweed,” Rosie struggled with the unfamiliar words, “doesn’t mean you have to make a feature of it.” “Oh really?” Martha raised her eyebrows. “And they thought you could lose an elephant in the lawn.” 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
For the rest of the day and into the evening Martha mowed, pruned and weeded. Even after a weary Rosie had been taken home she continued to fill her compost heap with grass clippings, leaf mulch and weeds. Her arms were scratched and her joints ached but by the time the sun had set anyone would agree how beautiful the garden now looked, if only there was enough light to see it. She sat on her back step and contemplated the day’s work. It amazed her how much energy her indignation had given her, but it was still not completely spent. Martha went into the kitchen and picked up a notepad. Decisively she scribbled the words ‘ARE YOU BOTH SATISFIED NOW?’, tore it off and posted it through the Dithering Dotties’ letterbox. A note they would find when they returned from a fortnight’s holiday in Dorset the following day, which would be a source of great mystery and remain a conversation point between them for years to come. HOW TO SAVE INHERITANCE TAX WITHOUT GIVING EVERYTHING AWAY Straight talking Yorkshire Estate Planner, Julie Wilson shares her top strategies to avoid this unfair tax and save your family £thousands I’m passionate about saving families Inheritance Tax. Tax is the price we have to pay to live in a civilised society, it’s true. But Inheritance Tax is unfair because it taxes money that’s already been taxed once, probably more. And it penalises ordinary people who have made smart decisions around money. That’s why I’ve built my online course, where I show you:
How Inheritance Tax works and when it’s payable
Why it’s unfair and how Government wastes it
Simple steps to calculate your own tax bill
Straight forward solutions to pay less tax without giving everything away
Real life case studies show you how ordinary families saved £thousands
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to calculate your own tax bill and understand how Inheritance Tax could affect your family. More importantly, you’ll learn simple, Government approved ways to reduce your bill and save your family £thousands. This course could save you thousands, but sells for a mere £99. For a limited period I can offer HandyMag readers a special discount, so you only pay £29. Plus I’m giving you my personal no quibble money back guarantee. If you don’t agree this course could save you £thousands, I’ll give you a full refund, no questions asked. To sign up, go to the website below, and enter HMIHT as the Promo Code to get your discount

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had
her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. One of the great British jazz voices of all time, Elaine Delmar brings her acclaimed interpretations of two of the greatest songbooks of all time, Gershwin and Porter, to Saturday evening. Completing Saturday’s line up, ’60s legend P.P. Arnold will have festivalgoers off their seats and dancing. Surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds and set in the award winning grounds and Great Hall of this Elizabethan stately home, could this be the most breathtaking place to spend a weekend, soaking up the UK’s hottest jazz and blues acts? Festival favourites Octopus kick off the festival in style on Friday evening with their classic big band swing, before Bugalu Foundation brings a fusion of jazz, funk and soul. Manjula kicks off Saturday’s line up with their haunting ambience of Indian vocal training and the rhythmic attack of jazz improvisation. From here, we move to pannist Dudley Nesbitt , who is an unflagging advocate for the art and culture of the steel pan. Blind Monk Trio rounds off the afternoon session, putting a fresh spin on the sax/bass/drums trio format. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Improvising violinist Matt Holborn will start off the festival on Sunday. Lindsay Hannon and her band will then take us on a journey from raucous barrel house blues to thoughtful, spacious ballads and Graeme Wilson will play an infusion of driving jazz and Latin rhythms, ambient swing with enthusiasm for folk and rock ballads, and free jazz. Simon Cunliffe-lister will join Ben Beattie’s After Midnight Band to round off the festival. Delicious food will be served on the Food Lawn and Tea Tent, and we’ll have the award-winning Wold Top beer on tap. There’s camping in our adjacent Park Field, with hot showers. Discounted ‘early bird’ tickets are currently on sale, priced at £70 for the full weekend, while children under 12 are free with an adult. Top Tips from a dental professional
FOR PEOPLE WHO SPIT BLOOD WHEN THEY BRUSH THEIR TEETH
Y
ou may well have seen the TV advert about a by Christine Parker well-known brand of BDS (GDC 72136) mouthwash. You may not be aware that using mouthwash is no substitute for a thorough gum check and professional cleaning. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease or other underlying health conditions and should always be assessed by a dental professional. The mouthwash advertised can cause severe staining of the teeth and whilst it may stop or reduce the bleeding it will not usually address the cause. When your dentist examines you they should assess the bone support around your teeth and the degree of gum inflammation. Where there are problems these can often be addressed by some fairly simple methods. These include: • Stopping smoking as this is a major cause of gum disease and can cause oral cancer. • Brush thoroughly for a minimum of 2 minutes twice a day. Disclosing tablets can be used to show you where you might be missing (they are not just for children) • Use interdental brushes or floss to clean the spaces between your teeth, this removes plaque and food which can stagnate causing bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. • See a dentist at least once a year who will establish the specific cause of your bleeding, recommend a course of treatment and demonstrate home care you can do to manage and control your future risk. So for people who do spit blood the message is see your dentist because bleeding gums really can lead to tooth loss. For a thorough gum assessment and treatment planning please call Jan at Howardian Dental.

HAPPY NEW TAX YEAR! (OR IS IT?)
Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants
Minimum Wage – from 1 April 2016, the “living wage” is being introduced for employees aged 25 and over which is £7.20 per hour. The minimum wage for under 21s is increasing in October 2016. Stamp Duty Tax – bad news for property investors and those buying second properties (which can include homes with Granny flats!) Those buying a buy to let or second property will have an additional 3% stamp duty to pay. Wear and tear – more bad news for landlords in that the 10% “wear and tear” allowance has been scrapped, with landlords only being able to claim on actual repair costs.
T
he new tax year is now upon us and with many changes occurring, it’s hard to keep on top of what’s what – so here’s a brief summary of some of the changes:
Changes for the 2016 / 2017 tax year Income Tax – the amount you can earn before paying any tax has increased to £11,000 from £10,600, and will rise again to £11,500 in 2017 / 2018. Also the amount you can earn before paying 40% has increased to £43,000 from £42,385. Good news for most!
Capital Gain Tax – good news for those selling assets for more than they cost, with rates being reduced to 10% (from 18%) for basic rate income tax payers and to 20% (from 28%) for high rate tax payers. Gains on residential properties however remain to be taxed at the old rates. Dividends – good news for investors holding a portfolio of shares with modest dividend income, but bad news for business owners who take most of their income out of their business as dividends. The first £5,000 of dividend income is tax free, however the previous year’s rates are in effect being increased by 7.5% - basic rate tax payers will pay 7.5% and higher rates tax payers 32.5%. Many business owners with income just below the higher rates for tax will now face an income tax bill for the first time in a while!

JAPAN
By Solange Hando
Iconic Cherry Blossom But beauty aside, what is so special about blossom?
W
hen winter draws to a close, the whole of Japan looks forward to the arrival of the cherry blossom. Every night on the news, the weather is followed by the ‘cherry blossom forecast’, carefully mapping out its progress. It all begins in January in the subtropical island of Okinawa down south, reaching Tokyo around the end of March and finally Hokkaido, the northern island, in May. Should you miss the blossom on the plain in Honshu, just head for the delightful mountain resorts of Hakone or Takayama when it comes out a little later. Legend has it that Hanami, or ‘flower viewing’, began around the 8th-9th centuries when Emperor Saga and his Court in Kyoto made offerings to the spirits dwelling in the trees while celebrating the occasion with sake, the traditional rice wine. Later the custom extended to the warrior class of
52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
the Samurai and eventually the common people followed suit. So to this day, at Hanami time, everyone heads for gardens and parks, castle grounds, temples and shrines to gaze in wonder and party under the cherry trees. Children joyfully celebrate the first day of school after the holidays and some companies pay an employee to sit in the park all day and reserve the best viewing spot for the after work party. Hanami can be enjoyed throughout the day or at night when paper lanterns hanging in the trees add a magical glow to the blossom. There is music and laughter and feasting on all sorts of blossom-flavoured snacks, sweets, dumplings, Kit Kats, crisps or beer, and you can even try a suitably flavoured Starbucks latte. Only the older folks might prefer a quiet time under a tree in their own courtyard, while for a few, wisteria and plum blossom are just as attractive.
For the Japanese, it reflects the two main religions on their islands, the traditional Shinto based on the worship of spirits in the natural world and Buddhism, which alongside respect for nature reminds followers that nothing in this world can last for ever. Life is short, we’re only passing through just like the beautiful cherry blossom which lasts no more than a couple of weeks. For many Japanese, the blossom is at its most inspiring when it starts to fall like ‘pink snow’ and carpet the land. The parties die down and it’s a time to reflect on life, past, present and future. As for the cherry trees, they are as iconic as Mount Fuji, with over 200 varieties producing all sorts of blooms, from the most delicate flowers to frothy clouds of colour in every shade of red and pink though for many, white, the rarest of all, is the favourite. Every public building and garden has its cherry trees but for those who can manage it, there are top viewing spots listed on the news, such as Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s many parks, claiming over 1,000 cherry trees, the Five Lake District, the Botanical Gardens in Kanazawa and in Miharu, the 1,000 year old aptly named ‘Waterfall Cherry Tree’ with its glorious show spanning some 20 metres around. Add a geisha in a traditional kimono and you have the essence of Japan, at its most endearing when the cherry trees are in full bloom.

POPPLETON CHILDREN’S Bank Holiday Monday 30 May SPORTS DAY Spring from 12.45pm on the Green
A
ny plans for the Bank Holiday weekend? Why not join in with the annual traditional village celebrations at Poppleton this year? The 2016 Poppleton Children’s Sports Day continues with a long tradition of ‘sports days’ dating back to the early 1900’s when Poppleton was actually two villages. Sports Day is now one of the highlights of the village social calendar, where family and friends can meet to enjoy this happy and traditional event. The main activities are centered around the village Maypole and sees children taking part in
traditional maypole dancing, while Morris Dancers entertain the many villagers and visitors that attend every year. As well as the dancing, childrens races for all primary school ages and the handicraft competition remain at the heart of the day. This year’s fancy dress theme is ‘space’, so why not indulge your inner ‘Trekkie’ and allow your creative side to shine through with your children’s costumes! (Be inspired but make sure it’s homemade!)
face painting, plants, jams, cakes, ice cream, tombola, candy floss, children’s games, afternoon tea and cakes and much, much more. And don’t miss the chance to see some amazing birds of prey at the Falconry Display.
Around the Green you will hear the sounds of the Brass Band and Taiko Japanese drumming, aswell as stalls selling food, crafts,

ANNUAL FOOD LOVER’S FESTIVAL
SET TO WELCOME THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO MALTON
T
he North Yorkshire market town of Malton is soon to welcome its 8th annual Malton Food Lover’s Festival (28 – 29th May 2016). Attracting thousands of visitors to Malton over the weekend, the Festival is well regarded as one of the most prestigious food festivals in the UK. Dubbed ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ by esteemed chef Antonio Carluccio, Malton’s annual Food Lovers Festival has grown significantly from just 1,500 visitors in its first year to being one of the biggest food festivals in the north, attracting some of the finest foodie talent in the country. Among the 2016 festival line-up is celebrity chef Rosemary Schrager, returning to Malton for a 3rd year to host an exclusive cookery tutorial, a live demonstration and a Q&A session. With over a decade on our TV screens, Rosemary endeared herself to the nation when she took part in I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here where she proved she could cook just about anything, anywhere. Her new show The Chopping Block begins on ITV1 on 11 April. Rosemary said; “What I love about Malton is the atmosphere, it’s passion for food and the incredible location. I jumped at the opportunity to come back this year and really can’t wait!” Festival Organiser, Tom Naylor-Leyland

arah Bellwood and Ruth Pearson of St Mary’s Church, Haxby have come up with a great way to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday by creating a calendar of local photos. Sarah says “The idea is for photos or artwork created by members of our community here in Haxby and Wigginton to be used in the calendar so it is really ours. It will include key dates for church services, school fairs, and the carnival and scarecrow festival for examples. The theme for the calendar is simply Haxby and Wigginton and the photo could be of anything in the area from buildings, scenes,

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MOTORING
Geneva Motor Show 2016 The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest events on the automotive calendar, and is an opportunity for the largest car manufacturers in the world to showcase their new models and technology. With hundreds of stands spread across vast halls, the motor show at Geneva gives a real insight into the direction that the motor industry is heading. RENAULT SCENIC Putting the humble Scenic beneath a fire-breathing Bugatti may seem a little odd, but the MPV’s importance can’t be understated. This size of vehicle has been waning in popularity of late, owing to the growth of the SUV and crossover in the family car market. The Scenic is hoping to fight back, bringing with it more radical styling and a design that will no doubt attract younger buyers back to the MPV. JAGUAR F-TYPE SVR It may have a snarling cat on the bonnet, but this is no ordinary Jaguar. Set to be the company’s fastest production car, this latest Jaguar is the first to have been worked on by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operation department. Capable of 200mph, the SVR is faster and lighter than a standard F-Type – and is £20,000 more expensive, too. Sitting at £110,000, the SVR features a deployable rear spoiler and added aerodynamic pieces designed to make it as stable as possible at high speed.

ALPINE VISION CONCEPT French manufacturer Alpine is hoping to make a grand return to the motoring world with its Vision Concept. A reveal in Monaco confirmed that the display vehicle is 80 per cent of the production car – and breaks with Alpine tradition by mounting the engine in the middle of the car rather than the rear. If the concept is popular enough, it will no doubt propel Alpine into a full return to form. AUDI Q2 Audi’s Q-series of cars has been ever-popular, offering drivers a raised ride height while maintaining excellent on-road characteristics. The Q2 will be the smallest of Audi’s SUVs, with entry-level models coming with front-wheel drive. Of course, more expensive Q2s will come with Audi’s popular Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which should mean that despite its diminutive size the Q2 will still be a capable off-road vehicle.

BUGATTI CHIRON Everyone knows of the legendary Bugatti Veyron, the W16-powered, 250mph hypercar, which has spent 11 years at the top of the motoring chain. It’s time, however, for a new model. Enter the Chiron. Named after Bugatti’s most successful driver, Louis Chiron, this latest model is reported to produce more than 1,400bhp and is capable of 288mph. The Chiron has been completely redesigned, but does contain elements of the Veyron. Likely to be the car of the event, the Chiron should completely rewrite the rule book in terms of speed and acceleration.

With the support of Ian McMillan we were able to offer a free workshop educating local primary children on the world renowned steam engine.” New for 2016 at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway ‘The Last Train’ workshop. Let your pupils explore the impact of the 1965 closure of the Whitby to Pickering and Esk Valley railways on school children living in the North York Moors. POOR PERFORMANCE IN HORSES Preparing a horse for any type of competition involves a huge investment in terms of time, effort and money, and so frustration often occurs when a horse fails to perform to expectations.
Most owners will agree that a sound horse is important for athletic performance, but many horses examined for performance problems are, for a variety of reasons, lame. While it is true that some horses compete successfully while carrying low-grade lameness problems, the pain associated with lameness often contributes to poor performance, in part by altering the horse’s attitude toward exercise. Treatment of the lameness often results in a rapid return of performance.
Poor performance is an inability of the horse to perform at a level previously observed, or at a level that can be reasonably expected based on the horse’s physical characteristics and state of training. This situation can present a particularly difficult diagnostic challenge for the veterinarian, with two main scenarios usually involved:
This emphasises two points regarding diagnosis of poor performance problems:
1. A horse which has clearly suffered a loss of proven performance 2. An unproven horse which is not performing up to the expectations of the owner/trainer - in many cases, these expectations are overly lofty and in reality there is nothing medically amiss with the horse The horse often appears to be quite healthy, has a good appetite, and is in good body condition, but a decline in ability/attitude during training and a fall-off in performance during competition has been noticed. Many factors contribute to athletic performance and just like a well-oiled and fine-tuned motor vehicle, the horse must be firing on all cylinders for peak performance.
1. Veterinary examination of the horse during exercise is often necessary 2. A thorough and comprehensive work-up is required and can be lengthy by Catriona Moon BSc(Hons) BVSc CertAVP(EP) MRCVS FEI Permitted Treatment Veterinarian FEI 2* Official Veterinarian for Endurance Station House Vets
STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal
The most important cylinders (body systems) for athletic performance are: • Musculoskeletal • Respiratory • Cardiovascular • Nervous system • Gastrointestinal Whether a particular problem impairs the horse’s performance depends on two factors; the level of exercise required by the horse and the severity of the problem. Minor ailments might not impact upon performance during light exercise, but the same seemingly minor ailment could pose a problem during harder exercise when all cylinders must be firing!

SPRING TIME ITCHES – IS YOUR PET AFFECTED? Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
Spring has arrived! Although most of us look forward to the warmer weather, the budding trees and the colour returning to our gardens, it can herald the start of the “itchy season” and misery for sensitive pets, especially dogs. Many animals will start to lick or scratch themselves at this time of year. It is their version of hay fever but while we react to pollens going up our noses and into our eyes, dogs are affected by contact with the skin. This is why the most commonly affected areas of the body are those close to the ground or often in contact with foliage, such as the feet, tummy and ears.
feet, to a reddish-brown colour. This is staining from the saliva caused by excessive licking of a particular area and it is most obvious on lighter coloured dogs. Diagnosis of allergies can be tricky, but blood tests and skin testing can help to identify substances in the environment that individual animals are allergic to. Common culprits include various pollens, fleas and house dust mites
Once the skin flares up the dog starts to scratch, rub or lick it. Known as the itch/scratch cycle the problem rapidly escalates causing inflamed, angry sore areas.
When treating these conditions medication is needed to reduce the itching and to tackle any infection caused by scratching or licking and if possible to look at reducing exposure to the allergens.
There is often a change in the coat colour, most often on the

to ensure that parasites are not causing a problem. Longer term treatments may include attempting to identify the underlying cause of the allergy, then creating a vaccine to gradually desensitise the pet to the allergy. This treatment has proved helpful for many dogs. Although allergies are usually managed rather than totally cured, modern medications can make a real difference to our pets. ONE NIGHT TWO PLAYS
Membership of the local amateur drama society has dwindled to four. Time for dramatic action. There's only one thing that sells tickets these days - sex. But how will the locals react to the promise of a sizzling sex comedy?
The poignant and witty tale of 3 Yorkshire sisters who come together after the funeral of their mother. One sister wants to spend her inheritance on a patio and another would love a through-lounge. But when the whisky takes hold, old secrets float to the surface and reveal a very different past…

PUZZLE SOLUTION
W
e know it’s a bold statement, but we have yet to be proved otherwise. Since we started Vale Radio in 2014, we have helped raise in excess of £100,000 for local charities, social groups and more.
It was only 2 months ago that Chris & Jayne from Vale Radio Breakfast were hosting a charity auction in aid of Martin House Hospice and managed to raise in excess of £14,000. One foggy night in October of 2014 saw £10,000 raised for Blake’s Genes within just 3 hours at Haxby Sports Bar and Social Club. Without the help of such factors of professionalism, showbiz, stage presence and charitable approach, the organisers themselves have said that they wouldn’t have raised so much money. Sandie Dunleavy, Dougie Weake, Chris Marsden, William Jenkyns, Steve Twynham who are all presenters on the radio station, have been raising money for charity for many years and have developed a winning formula for raising a smile and getting folks to dig deep into their pockets for good causes. Vale Radio is a not for profit company itself and prides itself in distributing its’ excess profits to local good causes. Vale Radio broadcasts local information and great music from the 50’s to now, 24 hours a day on your DAB Digital Radio set across North Yorkshire, Online at www. vale-radio.com and on their free mobile app. To hire the team to host your next event, please get in touch by calling 01904 765900 or email: charity@thevaleonline.com
