elcome to our May edition…

Whilst walking the dogs the skylarks are now singing high in the sky and spring is very definitely here. But even if the news is full of doom and gloom, there comes a time when you have to believe that better times are ahead. It’s a well-known fact that supporting your local area builds strong communities, sustains vibrant towns, links neighbours, creates more local jobs, enables local decisions and sees a larger share of the revenue cycled back into the local economy. Buy local, support local; and don’t forget to use your Handy Mag! The newly set up Haxby and Wigginton Traders Association hopes to bring businesses together in both Haxby and Wigginton to help promote the area and ensure its continued success. With over 400 businesses registered in this area, it is great to hear of business owners working together to help their businesses grow. If you want to find out more the website is at www. hw1.biz. We wish the group every success. The crowds will once again descend on Haxby and Wigginton next weekend for the annual Scarecrow Festival. I’m always amazed by the commitment of the local community at this event. There are always a huge number of very well crafted scarecrows and last year the event raised over £5000 for charities. Local community has always been strong in Haxby and Wigginton. There are lots of local businesses and local groups and organisations providing services for the area and many community events. We are also shining our spotlight on Gary Langley, local businessman and owner of well-established Instyle Kitchens in Haxby. Running a business is

Cloud 9 Windows Service with A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloud 9 Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up, we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and

I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

I get a huge amount of business from family and friends of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 328 8213 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cloud 9 Windows are based locally and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

MOVE OR IMPROVE?

T

By Scott Anscomb

here are many reasons why people think about moving house; it could be that they need or want to be in a different location, have a better view, need more space, or simply want a house with a different layout and all the latest fittings. As estate agents, we are involved on a day to day basis with many different homes, seeing first hand what works well and how our living spaces impact our day to day lives. I have noticed over the past 15 years that the way we live in our houses has changed, with many more of us knocking through adjoining rooms or extending to create bright open plan living spaces. Architectural innovations such as walls of glass with bi-folding or sliding doors, and atriumstyle glazed roof sections have become popular, adding a touch of Californian or Scandinavian design to our traditional British houses.

As a result, when people start to look into moving home, some find they don’t actually need to move at all to achieve the space they want for the next phase of their lives. Watching house-related TV shows or a quick visit to a new development to see a show home often gives people the inspiration they need, to either move house or indeed improve their own home. We are fortunate to see many different houses, which is fascinating and gives us an understanding of what people want from their homes, and how to achieve layouts and designs that work. When we meet potential customers in their homes to carry out a ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

valuation, we are able to advise on the ways in which homes can be improved for selling, and also how they can be changed it if they are thinking of staying. As both estate agents and mortgage brokers, we can help you with either scenario.

If you are thinking of selling, we can provide you with a free, no obligation valuation of your home and suggest improvements you can make to improve the value and saleability. Our highly experienced and fully qualified mortgage advisors can search thousands of mortgages from over a hundred lenders to provide you with your options going forward, ensuring you secure the very best deal. Then, when you are ready to make the move we can handle all aspects of selling your home with a personal service tailored to suit you. However, if you are considering improving your home, we can help by providing a free and impartial opinion on the changes you plan to make along with an up to date valuation. And our mortgage advisors can search the market to find you the very best re-mortgage deal to release the funds you need, taking away the hassle, so you can concentrate on the project itself. For the past 15 years, my team and I at Your Move Anscombs have helped thousands of people in and around York move or improve their home and secure the very best mortgage deal. So, if you’re unsure of what to do, please give us a call on 01904 621532 and we will be happy to come out and discuss your options.

Stacey Halls 1612 is a dangerous time to be a woman in Northern England, as King James has declared war on witches. Fleetwood is 17 and pregnant for the fourth time. Her other pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Desperate not to miscarry this child or lose her own life in childbirth, she turns to a local midwife, Alice Grey. When Alice gets accused of witchcraft, Fleetwood has to decide how far she’ll go to save her friend. Loosely based on the Pendle witch trials, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner. Zoe Sallis When Maya Angelou calls something a ‘fascinating collection’, you know you’re in for a treat and Voices of Powerful Women certainly doesn’t disappoint. Zoe Sallis interviewed 40 women for her book, including Judi Dench, Tracey Emin, Benazir Bhutto and Mariane Pearl. Each one gives us a glimpse into what made her who she is today. You’ll learn what inspires these women, what angers them, who they admire and what advice they want to pass on to the next generation. Julie Cohen A baby is born in 1970s Maine, USA. In one reality she’s a girl – Louise; in the other, a boy – Louis. Both have the same friends, the same interests and the same ambitions. Both flee from their hometown after one fateful night that changes everything. Thirteen years later, Lou’s mother is dying, so he/she returns to face the past. Original, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable, Louis & Louise is perfect for book clubs. 24 | Handy Mag | May 2019

James Collins Nutritionist James Collins is a world leader in the field of performance nutrition. He’s guided the eating habits of Olympic athletes and premier sports stars. His first book, The Energy Plan, is not about cutting out food groups, quick fix diets or denial. Instead, it’s about fuelling your body so it performs better and you feel fitter, have more energy and can fight off illnesses. The Energy Plan is well worth a read, whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to avoid the 3pm energy slump. Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen This book takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme. Many of the 40 homes featured are smaller than 150 square feet. From a refurbished Airstream to a treehouse, what these homes lack in space, they more than make up for in character. The book includes floorplans, advice and lots of lust-worthy photographs. Whether you’re thinking of building your own tiny home, want some tips to make the most of smaller rooms or just fancy taking a peek into how other people live, Micro Living is for you. Meredith May With a depressed single mother who could barely get out of bed, Meredith relied on her grandfather for love and solace. She also found another avenue for learning life’s lessons – her grandfather’s bees. Through the hive, Meredith learned about family, loyalty, self-sacrifice and resilience. A thoughtprovoking memoir.

WOODWORM IN YOUR HOME

D

by Peter Cox Ltd

ealing with woodworm can be a difficult task, as it’s often hard to identify an outbreak correctly. Woodworm is the generic term given to the wood-eating larvae and grubs of different species of wood boring beetles. They use the timber as a source of food and use it to lay their eggs in. Woodworm can spread quickly and can potentially cause severe structural and cosmetic damage if left untreated. Woodworm tend to appear between the end of March and September, when they leave the timber as an adult beetle. One sign of woodworm activity is small exit holes in the timber, but these don’t always mean that the infestation is active. The best way to spot an active infestation is to look for woodworm ‘frass’ (fine sawdust) around the exit holes. This indicates that an infestation is recent, and that woodworm larvae may still be present in the timber. Different species of woodworm vary in size, so the exit holes vary in size based on this. If you have noticed furniture or flooring is becoming weakened, it could be a sign of woodworm damage. The most common treatment process uses an insecticide applied to the affected timber. This involves spraying the infested area with a fluid that coats the surface, killing the insects before they can come out to breed - ideally this should be done by a professional. In the case of a mass outbreak of woodworm structural damage can occur and you should not even attempt the job on your own and instead got straight to a professional. If structural timber is severely damaged it may have to be replaced, historic or decorative timber may be repaired using epoxy resin repair methods. We offer a free domestic survey service for homeowners covering woodworm treatments and other property preservation solutions. You can contact us on 01904 899 757. Bluebell Gray Peggy Midnight duvet cover set, £135, Hurn and Hurn: 01603 559 250; www.hurnandhurn.com

Bold colours are on trend this spring, often quite dark and moody, and where better than a bedroom to go for this dark décor? Use fuchsia, turquoise, emerald, orange, mustard or deep blue in arresting combinations or perhaps just cover one wall with a strong shade. Lighting should be subtle and flattering. Make it adaptable with table or floor lamps in corners and fitting a dimmer switch to the central pendant. ON THE WALLS

Experiment with paint colours by using a tester pot to cover a large sheet of card, then stick it to different walls at various times of the day so you can see how the colour changes. Alternatively use patterned wallpaper, all over or just on a feature wall. Or opt for a wall-sized mural of, for example, a wooded glade, tropical palms, a cityscape, oversized flowers or a starry night sky.

BEAUTIFUL BED LINEN

Introduce sumptuous bed linens that are gorgeous to look at and soft to the touch. You can use plain white as the basics, just adding a stunning throw, blanket,

eiderdown or quilt – or several – for eye-catching colour and pattern. Or go for broke and put colour with colour and plains with patterns for layered vibrancy.

TAKE THE FLOOR

In a bedroom where wear and tear is not a factor, luxurious, deep-pile carpet is an option. If that’s beyond your budget, consider sanding back your floorboards and either varnishing or painting them, then adding a rug or two in a bold, modern style.

LIGHTS FANTASTIC

Lighting should be subtle and flattering. Make it adaptable with table or floor lamps in corners and fitting a dimmer switch to the central pendant. Choose warm white, energy-saving LED bulbs that are not overly bright. For bedside reading, a pair of swing-arm, wall-mounted lights frees up bedside table space, or hang a bare filament bulb from a coloured cotton flex suspended from the ceiling or a wall-mounted bracket. May: National Walking Month Walking: so good for you, it should be prescribed.

N

ational Walking Month is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking. It is perhaps walking that is the most accessible exercise, available to all regardless of current levels of fitness or income.

YOUR HEALTH

Walking helps gives your leg muscles and lungs a work out; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed. The NHS says even just a brisk 10-minute daily walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more brisk walking. Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system.

BE SOCIABLE – OR GET ALONE TIME

Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with. 30 | Handy Mag | May 2019

However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can help you get into a rhythm and walk faster If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic.

RAISE MONEY FOR A GOOD CAUSE

For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day.

HOW AND WHERE TO WALK

You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and journeys. Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant? • Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? A search on the internet as well as through our event listings will return lots of groups and resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Spotlight On...

Haxby business owner Gary Langley on The Village in Haxby. Gary says “We only had one supplier, five kitchen styles and seven worktops to choose from back then.” He explains how his initial business growth in Haxby was mainly thanks to his daughter, who came into the showroom on work experience from school. She and a friend printed flyers to send out to the local community, inviting everyone to a wine and cheese Saturday. It was a great success – hundreds of people turned up and they fitted seven kitchens in the area as a result! “I’ve always been grateful to my daughter and her school friend for her enthusiasm at that time!” he says.

T

his month, the spotlight is on Gary Langley, the owner of thriving local business, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms.

Originally from Newcastle, Gary and his wife, Lynda, decided to move to Haxby near York in 1984 (on April Fools Day!). They have two daughters together, and since moving here they have put down their roots for good. Gary says “We moved to Haxby to be close to family, but it’s a lovely place to live and bring up children. It’s close to York, safe and has all amenities on your doorstep.” It’s also where Gary decided to set up his own business. After being made redundant from his role as a sales and marketing manager for a window company, he decided it was time to branch out on his own, and his business journey began in 1990. Initially, Gary set out working from home – he recounts how, alongside his business partner, they would fit kitchens and windows by themselves. Fast forward two years, and they found themselves in a position to buy an office soon to be showroom

40 | Handy Mag | May 2019

Now, Gary manages four teams of kitchen and window fitters. He also offers bedrooms fitting, and they have extended their reach across the region. “We now work with many suppliers so we have hundreds of kitchens, worktops and fittings to choose from” Gary explains. “We have about 20 regular suppliers and all of our kitchens and bedrooms are manufactured in the UK. The average kitchen can come from 8 different suppliers for carcasses, doors, worktops, appliances, handles and accessories.” Customers enjoy being able to design their own kitchen and see the end result quickly. Speaking with Gary, it is clear he’s passionate about his business and making his customers happy. He’s also thankful for how supportive the local community in and around Haxby has been. He says, “The people of York have always made me feel at home.” Like many business owners, Gary also admits he works all the time. “My only time off is spent at our apartment in Cyprus where we go to relax, but even then the business is on my mind and I have a office where I can catch up with work for a couple of hours every day!” he says. After 29 years of trading - growing from a oneman band to a close-knit team – Gary is still as enthusiastic about his business. “I will do a job as long as I enjoy it, and after 29 years I can honestly say I still enjoy the variety of our work and ensuring our customers all receive the same brilliant service” he adds. TRADERS IN HAXBY AND WIGGINTON JOIN FORCES working together for the good of the community and deciding together on how to use the money from grants bestowed by the council.

A

After York City Council announced £100,000 of funding last year to help local businesses in secondary shopping areas including Haxby and Wigginton, a new trader’s association was born, and their website hw1.biz has just gone live! Haxby and Wigginton Trader’s Association was set up by local businesses for local businesses as a way to keep the high street alive and make it an attractive place for people to shop, eat and drink. Modelled on the successful association of Bishopthorpe Road, Chairman David Beal wanted to put together a committee that allows traders to openly collaborate, discuss and suggest improvements for the areas around Haxby and Wigginton in a friendly, inclusive environment. So, after a positive response from local business owners and a meeting with the chairman of Bishopthorpe Road Trader’s Association, the Haxby and Wigginton Trader’s Association was founded, its committee elected and a website created.

WHO’S IT FOR?

Traders and businesses, even those without a shop front, are welcome to join the association for an annual membership fee. And the benefits of joining are many. Not only can local businesses advertise on the new website, but they also have the opportunity to be actively involved in changes to their neighbourhood. Suggestions on improvements, schemes and initiatives are always welcome – and everyone is 42 | Handy Mag | May 2019

Their overall aim is to help increase trade by increasing footfall, and to create an area where businesses feel valued, supported and listened to. For example, the area is already established as somewhere that’s friendly to those who suffer from dementia. What’s more, the association set up an educational seminar to support this initiative and raise awareness.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Plans are in place for a whole host of events to bring people into Haxby and Wigginton, and allow them to enjoy all the different things on offer. These include the Haxby Carnival, a Celebration of Yorkshire Day and the annual Christmas Lights event – last year saw more people on the streets of Haxby than ever before! And the traders who stayed open for this benefited greatly, so the association is keen to organise even more successful events throughout the year. Suggestions from hw1.biz members for solutions to problems and environmental improvements are also invaluable to keeping the work of the association beneficial for all. Events are advertised on their new website and also includes a directory of all their members. For details of when the next meeting will be held and how to become a member, please contact Haxby & Wigginton Traders Association via their website at www.hw1.biz.

BREAKING NEWS!

SCARECROWS OVERRUN HAXBY AND WIGGINTON Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May This year will be no different, but you’ll not have to search for a needle in a haystack as there will be marked routes of varying lengths to choose from over the weekend. What’s more, proceeds from tickets sold will go to good causes. The chosen charities for 2019’s Scarecrow Festival include the Common Good Charity, based in South Africa, as well as Wigginton Grasshoppers Football Club. Also added to this year’s list of recipients are SASH, who work to prevent homelessness in North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire, and Marie Curie. Over £5,200 was raised last year with the proceeds going to Christian Aid, Wigginton Old School, Oaken Grove Community Centre and the Special Care Baby Unit. So this year, Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church are wanting to break the record.

T

his May bank holiday weekend sees the return of the legendary Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church Scarecrow Festival. And this year is set to be even bigger and better!

The now yearly event first started in 2007 after a church member visited South Africa to be involved in a project that supports people in townships, and wanted to help raise their profile at home. So, the idea of a scarecrow festival was born, and it’s been a success ever since. Refreshments, snacks and cakes will be available throughout the weekend too, so you can refuel ahead of your route or compare notes afterwards over a tea or coffee.

Over the last 13 years, residents of Haxby and Wigginton have channelled their creative energy to create a crowd-pleasing display of life-size straw characters – something you have to see to believe! It’s been such a popular event with visitors of all ages that it has become a firm fixture in the yearly calendar.

Each trail costs £2.50 or choose all five for £10. Tickets are available from Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church from 10am to 4.30pm.

Last year, an incredible 150 scarecrows popped up in front gardens overnight. Peter Rabbit was seen munching on some carrots, Postman Pat was doing his rounds and Harry and Meghan even made a surprise visit, amongst many more.

Follow the fun on twitter @ HWScarecrowFest and use #hwsf19 to share your favourite.

As you can imagine, there’s some fierce competition to win the crowd’s favourite with the standard getting better and better every year.

See you there!

Cusco

T

The Inca Capital in Peru

he Incas got it right. Up in the Andes, this was a great location for their capital, a remote plateau ringed by mountains and blessed by fertile valleys. Even today Cusco appears almost unreal, a hidden city basking in subtropical highlands at 3,400 metres. Eucalyptus rise in the thin mountain air, red-roofed houses clamber up the lower slopes and the sound of Andean flutes echoes along the streets. Little is known about the early Killke settlers but the first Incas arrived in the 1200s, led by Manco Capac whose origins remain shrouded in legend. The city reached its apogee from 1438 onwards when, after defeating the Chacas, Pachacuti came to power. Ninth ruler and ‘world shaker’, he transformed the Inca kingdom into one of the world’s greatest empires and rebuilt the capital with highways, irrigation channels, terraced gardens, ceremonial plaza with a gold-covered altar, magnificent Temple of the Sun and other major buildings near the Saphi stream, the mythical origins of Cusco. That’s where the Spanish conquistadors entered the heart of the city in 1533, described by their leader Francisco Pizarro as ‘very noble and great’ with palaces, regular streets and a temple studded with gold, ‘fabulous beyond belief ’. The Incas attempted to regain control in 1536 but failed after a ten months siege. Now the time had come to build churches, convent, cathedral and more, using the old Inca walls as foundations. Earthquakes have often damaged the Spanish buildings but Inca walls survived and in 1983 Cusco became a Unesco site for its combined Inca and colonial heritage. The Santo Domingo Convent and Church is a striking example, built originally on the sacred site 46 | Handy Mag | May 2019

of Coricancha and the most important Temple of the Sun. Today one can still sense the haunting presence of the Incas drifting along the pre-Hispanic walls. Other popular churches include La Merced and the Jesuits’, both famous for their Cusco Baroque style, while in the cathedral the Quechua builders, descendants of the Incas, made sure they left their mark. Guides will point out the suggestive phallic symbols, dear to the Incas, carved on the choir stalls but most surprising of all is the 18th century painting of the Last Supper. Forget bread and wine, here Jesus and the apostles are sharing Andean cheese, local fruit and a guinea pig, the traditional Peruvian dish. The cathedral opens on the Plaza de Armas, the colourful central square, which hosts two stunning festivals in June, the religious Feast of Corpus Christi and on the 24th - the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere - the Inca Festival of the Sun. A gentle stroll from the plaza, the artisans’ district of San Blas is a different world, winding through a maze of steps and alleyways where a mysterious twelve-angled stone holds pride of place in one of the best-preserved Inca walls. But on the hilltop above town, the largest stones of any Inca archaeological site are found in the Saksayhuman fortress, built by the Killke then massively extended by Pachacuti. Meanwhile, just along the path, a giant statue of Christ looks down on the old capital still shaped like a puma, the sacred animal of the Incas. With its rich heritage and vibrant colours, Cusco is indeed a lovely place to explore before heading to Machu Picchu on the scenic rail journey or one of the high altitude treks for the truly adventurous. by Solange Hando

PROTECTING YOUR PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION By PCSO Andy Smith 5520

Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic; just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name or address), it doesn’t mean they are genuine.

F

raudsters are sending the public fake TV Licensing emails to steal their personal and financial information. Victims who click on the link are led to a convincing looking TV Licensing website – where fraudsters can obtain bank account details and commit identity fraud. The increase in reporting was identified in September 2018, following publicity the same month around a security issue with the TV Licensing website. Reporting to the NFIB has increased month on month since then. Since April 2018, 926 crime reports have been made to Action Fraud, with a total loss of over £830,000. The highest single recorded loss is £50,000. Reports made to Action Fraud identify that the current TV Licensing phishing emails are part of a larger scam where criminals call individuals claiming to be bank employees. This is how the scam works: 1. The victim receives a TV Licensing phishing email with links to a convincing-looking website that steals personal and financial details. 2. Within a week or two, victims will receive a phone call from a fraudster claiming to be from the fraud department of the victim’s bank. The fraudsters are able to convince victims they are

50 | Handy Mag | May 2019

genuine banking staff by providing some of the personal details that were obtained using the fake TV Licensing emails and websites. The fraudster states that the victim’s account has been compromised, possibly by a phishing scam they may have fallen victim to recently, and states that they need to transfer their money to a new ‘safe account’. The average age of a victim is 54 and that 65% of victims are female.

UNSOLICITED EMAILS, TEXTS AND CALLS; Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details. Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic; just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name or address), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Remember, criminals can spoof the phone numbers and email addresses of companies you know and trust, such as TV Licensing. Your bank will never call and ask you for your PIN, full banking password, or ask you to transfer money out of your account.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE FALLEN VICTIM: Let your bank know as soon as possible and monitor your bank statements regularly for any unusual activity. If you suspect your identity may have been stolen you can check your credit file quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results.

nheritance Tax. A death tax on the wealthy has been around for centuries. But nowhere near enough people realise the importance of sorting out an Inheritance Tax plan. Far too many people still ignore it, leaving their families with a whopping tax bill when they die. Currently, anything you own above £325,000 is taxed at 40% when you die. Bear in mind, you’ll have already paid tax on all this stuff at least once in your lifetime. Probably more. From 2021, an extra £175,000 allowance may become available for some who are leaving their main residence to direct descendants. But that will almost certainly he swallowed up house price increases. And can you really trust Government promises? They say Inheritance Tax helps distribute wealth more fairly. But should ordinary families really have to contribute when the Government wastes hundreds of

billions of pounds every year? There’s no wonder some decide they’d rather take action regarding who benefits from their money when they die. Avoiding Inheritance Tax means your money can go towards the things your family needs or wants. Your grandchild’s first car, the dream holiday they’ve been looking at, a new home…The possibilities are endless, it just takes a few simple steps in the right direction to avoid or reduce the Inheritance Tax you’ll pay when you die. Why be smart with your money all your life if a massive chunk of it will be lost when you die? There are many SIMPLE & LEGAL ways to avoid Inheritance Tax, or at least soften the blow for your family. If you’d rather your money stays with your family, and not the Tax Man, you need to take action NOW. Short Story A Bad Day for Brutus? “Look, there’s a sign for a country park,” Pauline pointed. “Let’s stop for ten minutes and let Brutus out for a tiddle.” “A bit of fresh air will do us all some good,” Neil agreed, slowing down. They had spent the bank holiday weekend camping with Neil’s brother and his family, who were the devoted owners of Brutus the lurcher although not quite devoted enough to make room for him in their own car. Neil and Pauline luckily had a roof box for all their extra camping equipment so had Brutus riding with them. Brutus had an unfortunate habit of jumping out of vehicles, so they’d been driving for an hour with the windows shut. Brutus had also spent the entire weekend luxuriating in cow fields so the air in the car was eye-wateringly pungent. They drove towards the car park entrance. As they approached the barrier a young man in a baseball cap waved his hands at them, as though warning them not to go in. “Why doesn’t he want us to go in?” Pauline asked anxiously. “Do you think it’s full?” Neil drove on. “There’s always someone about to leave if you’re patient.” “I’ll ask him, he seems pretty insistent.” Pauline began winding down her window. “You never know, there could be a wild animal on the loose.” “Round here?” Neil snorted at the suggestion. “Like what? A horde of rabid squirrels?” At the mention of squirrels, Brutus leapt through Pauline’s open window. “Stop, Neil!” Pauline screamed. “The dog’s jumped out.” “I can’t stop,” Neil said, “I’ve got cars behind me.”

The air in the car was eye-wateringly pungent. The man who’d been waving at them tapped on Neil’s window. Neil wound it down. “Mate, I tried to warn you.” He shook his head. “I’d recommend you stay in the car. It’s pretty bad,” the man grimaced. “Not sure it’s retrievable to be honest.” Neil said, feeling queasy. “Should I go forward or back?” “I’d try reversing slowly. It’s going to be nasty but at least you’re only going back over the bits that are already crushed.” The sound of scraping and dragging vibrated through every nerve in his body. Finally it ended. “That’s it mate, you’re clear,” the man said, tapping the bonnet. “Do you want to get out and have a look?” Neil did not particularly. He turned off the engine and climbed out. This was just the opportunity Brutus needed to leap back in, smearing muddy footprints all over Pauline and the upholstery. “He’s fine, he’s fine. Not a scratch on him. So what was that awful noise, Neil?”

Pauline shrieked. “We’ve run over the dog!”

Neil was just discovering that the roof box he’d forgotten all about had been two inches higher than the car park height restriction barrier. Had been, but no longer was.

Neil slammed on the brake.

By Jackie Brewster

He regretted his decision instantly. With a sickening bang, the car made impact with something large.

Miso Broth with Pak Choi and Tofu Ready in: 15 minutes | Serves 4

Miso paste is made from fermented soya beans and is a staple in Japanese cooking. Look out for jars in Oriental stores or the World Food sections of large supermarkets. It’s perfect for making a quick and tasty soup or broth.

1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large deep frying pan over a high heat. Add the garlic and sliced mushrooms and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the mushrooms are just tender and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

INGREDIENTS

3. Return the mushrooms to the pan and heat through for a further minute. Divide the broth between four warmed bowls and serve immediately.

• • • • • • •

2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 200g shiitake mushrooms, sliced 2 x 225g packs smoked tofu, cubed 2 tbsp miso paste 2 tbsp light soy sauce 400g pak choi, roughly chopped

58 | Handy Mag | May 2019

2. Add the tofu to the pan and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until just browned. Reduce the heat and stir in the miso paste, soy sauce and 1 litre of boiling water. Slowly bring to the boil then add the pak choi and simmer for 2-3 minutes until just softened.

TIP For a heartier dish cook some thread egg or rice noodles following the pack instructions and divide between the serving bowls before spooning over the broth.

Price new: £42,870 Price one-year: £39,990 With the 3 Series being replaced this year, there are great deals to be had – the 330d Touring model with a 3.0-litre straight-six engine is ideal for motorway driving, and falls from £42,870 new to £39,990 at a year old.

INFINITI QX30

O

pting for a car that’s a year old over a brand-new model could save a packet. Here are a selection of the best. Finding money off a barely-used car can be tricky, so we’ve found classified ad examples representing huge savings over brand-new options. The prices quoted are correct at the time of writing.

BMW 3 SERIES GT

Price new: £38,280 Price one-year: £19,890 The 3 Series GT is pitched as an all-occasion car. It’s part-hatchback, part-saloon, part-executive, but this vehicle trying to be three hasn’t proved very successful. That said, it offers a high level of quality along with that premium badging. A new 320d M Sport Gran Turismo is £38,280, but with 10,000 miles on the clock and last year’s plate it costs around £19,890.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT

Price new: £45,810 Price one-year: £32,444 This baby Discovery is a desirable family car, mating a superbly practical seven-seat body with Land Rover prestige, albeit with a dated interior and lack of topend technology. At £12,000 off list price, a one-year old example is a bargain.

JAGUAR XF

Price new: £36,495 Price one-year: £27,500 The XF drives nicely and has a decent engine range, but hasn’t sold well. We found a 2018-reg R-Sport car fitted with the 2.0-litre 178bhp diesel engine for £27,500 with 4,000 miles on the clock – a huge saving. 66 | Handy Mag | May 2019

Price new: £29,720 Price one-year: £17,000 This combination of Mercedes platform, Nissan interior and Renault diesel engines was a reasonable mix until you looked at the price. However, at around £17,000 for a year-old example, the QX30 becomes easier to recommend.

TOYOTA YARIS GRMN

Price new: £26,295 Price one-year: £21,995 The Toyota Yaris GRMN may be a bargain buy at £21,995 and with less than 1,500 miles on the used market, particularly as its limited numbers and widely-hailed driving experience may make it a future collector’s item.

FORD MONDEO VIGNALE

Price new: £30,625 Price one-year: £19,999 Ford’s upmarket Mondeo Vignales are an absolute steal on the used market and come with a lengthy equipment list. We found a one-year-old example for just under £20,000.

VAUXHALL ASTRA

Price new: £21,760 Price one-year: £9,799 With £12,000 or 54% off a sporty-looking Astra SRi with the excellent 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine at just a year old, we wonder why anyone buys a new Vauxhall!

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT 6.2

Price new: £63,995 Price one-year: £38,995 It’s the Grand Cherokee’s monstrous 6.2-litre V8 engine that puts buyers off, but for performance, power, and sheer noise on a budget, this is a great way to go.

INTRODUCING CUDDLY KAPLINKSKY spring sunshine on her fur Kaplinsky is more of a home bird and she would prefer to stay close to the ones she loves. Because of this she’s carrying a little bit of extra *ahem* ‘holiday weight’ Kaplinsky is currently on a feline weight watchers program to help her get back down to a more healthy size, this means any new owners will need to help her with this and also ensure she gets a bit of exercise - so no lazing around watching Phil & Holly with packet of Dreamies for this lass! All this gorgeous girl wants is a lap to snooze on and she will be a perfect match for a retired home.

Jasper’s Diary WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT CATS? Dear Diary… Talking from a dog’s perspective, I feel like we are treated unfairly compared to cats. Take my sister Tiffin for example, she’s allowed to sleep on the bed whenever she wants, she jumps straight onto the sofa and curls up between mummy and daddy without any problem and she has her own special door so that she can come and go whenever she likes. Then when the mood takes her, she bites my tail and grabs at the hairs on my legs, mum even puts her food bowl high up so that I can’t share it, I think I have to put up with a lot! So, you can imagine my shock when I found that there is a separate cat waiting area at the practice with posters saying that we are “Cat Friendly” as we have an International Cat Care Silver Award. There’s even a shelf to put the cat basket on so that the cat can look down on everyone! Should we really be encouraging this idea that they are more important than everyone else? Apparently, they get nervous when they go to the vets so need some extra TLC, there’s also a cat only bedroom which I’m not allowed in because it’s supposed to be kept quiet and calm in there! The nurses say cats need to be handled calmly and carefully so they don’t get scared, to be honest I never want to cross a cat either! Jasper x

GIVING CATS THE CARE THEY DESERVE This non-profit organisation came about when a number of animal loving individuals formed a team, to help animals in need within the community. In 2015 the team decided that to gain some much needed support they needed to set up a public platform for sharing their work; Band of Rescuers North Yorkshire (BORNY) aims to: • Care for unwanted, homeless, neglected, abused and injured felines. • Facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of cats and kittens and work to keep feral colonies controlled using a trap, neuter, release programme; re-homing any feral kittens once socialised if suitable. • Prevent animals suffering from neglect or abuse by removing them from potentially dangerous situations; offering them a fresh start at life. • Provide a focus for learning, to educate and encourage the neutering and microchipping of companion animals along with all other welfare issues using a holistic approach. • Help people identify safe rescue spaces as an alternative to advertising animals online. • Work with partners and organisations in 70 | Handy Mag | May 2019

developing initiatives to help safeguard and protect the lives of animals. What is unique about BORNY is that instead of a cattery-based setup, they have a network of foster carers in and around York who welcome into their homes these abandoned, stray or neglected felines, where they can be given the TLC they deserve. Once back to full health and given the green light from the vets, the BORNY team find forever homes for the cats. The organisation is supported by other invaluable volunteers who help with fundraising, transport and home visits. BORNY rely solely on public donations and all monies raised go directly towards helping cats and kittens in need. Without this support they would not be able to continue the vital work they do. Since 2015 BORNY has successfully rehomed in excess of 650 felines. Jake is a sweet boy who came to the centre as an unclaimed stray, so he is understandably a little unsure of meeting new people. Jake will need a quiet rural home with owners who will give him the time needed to settle but he really has the potential to become a loving member of the family. He is best suited to a home where he is the only pet with teenage children and over. Chester came to the centre after being abandoned on the street and left to fend for himself, so he is a little shy at the moment, but once he trusts you he does enjoy a fuss and a cuddle, Chester will need a quiet and patient home with adopters who will love and

cherish him. He could possibly live with a female cat but would prefer an adult only home.

Make it Minimal by Pippa Greenwood

F

or some, the ideal view from their back door is a flower-filled cottage-style garden brimming with colourful perfumed plants and flowers, buzzing with bees and with not a straight line in sight. But there is an increasing interest in a more minimalist style, where plants are grown in a much more designed situation, with straight lines aplenty but far fewer plants and yet each plant having a much greater individual impact. If you hanker after a minimalist garden, here are some suggestions for achieving the effect you want. One of the key design elements to a minimalist garden is simplicity. Decide on the plants you like that will suit your garden, and then keep the different types you use as low as possible. The biggest

The colours on which you concentrate need to fit in with your personal preferences and the surroundings, but to increase that minimalist style try to restrict the number of colours used and the whole effect will be calmer and simpler. Any existing features that cannot be removed (perhaps a shed or fence) can either be recoloured or painted to fit in with the new scheme, or their current colour will have to be included with what you’re using for landscaping and planting.

impact will be achieved if you use just a few, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses. Another key to the minimalist look is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles thrown in. Edges need to be sharply defined, perhaps using sleepers or other timber, or even angled metal. Make sure that planting does not interfere with the lines created by border edging, so keep plants well back.

A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and a single type of container – for example, conifers of varying sizes look great in terracotta containers. The only variation here is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same. It is easy to achieve by buying several different sizes of the same type of conifer and then keeping them clipped regularly so that they remain of differing sizes. Alternatively, if you can only get one size, trim them lightly to achieve the desired look, but remember most conifers won’t withstand hard pruning and are inclined to show their brown inner foliage if cut back too hard.

Green, in the form of foliage, helps to add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so make sure you include it, perhaps as neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers. Any containers need to be as plain as possible, a single colour ideally, and straight-sided angular styles add to the minimalist slant too. An evenly spaced trio of pots, each with a single central plant, provides a perfect choice of container planting and will also bring movement to the garden as the breeze sways the foliage. If you like topiary this can be a great choice but stick to simple tightly clipped spheres or ‘lollipops’, cubes or at most spirals; there is no space for a peacock, rabbit, bear or other fantastically sculptured creature if you’re going minimalist! Plants with simple or angular shapes such as iris, alliums, conifers, clipped box, canna or palms are an excellent choice, but take a look at what is available locally and opt for any of your personal (but simple) favourites.

Grass alternatives such as gravel may feature highly. Gravel certainly makes for less maintenance than the classic grass, but make sure it stays weed-free and easy-care by installing a weed-membrane (rather like woven, plastic hessian) onto the soil before putting down the gravel. Thoroughly weed the area then firm and compact well before putting the fabric down and you this will ensure gravel without unwanted green shoots. Don’t be tempted to economise and use plastic sheeting as it won’t allow rain to penetrate, and after heavy rain you’ll end up with a flood plain! A minimalist garden need not be just for admiring: make it so that you can sit out there and soak up the calm feeling it gives you too. Choose simple, classically styled garden furniture with as few colours and textures as possible and the furniture won’t detract from the minimalist environment and look that you’ve achieved – so just sit back and enjoy.
