elcome to the May edition.
A big welcome to readers in the Poppletons, Dunnington, Murton and surrounding areas; the HandyMag York Villages is bigger and better with you in our distribution. We look forward to finding out what is going on in your area. Back in 2005 we had this really good idea – how can we bring together local business and community information in one ‘handy’ place – and the Handy Mag was ‘born’! If you belong to a local group or charity, we’d be happy to publicise your events and details for free. If you own a local business, we can get you seen in over 24000 homes and businesses on the north side of York. Give us a call to find out how we can help. There is so much going on locally this summer, I’m tempted to stay in Yorkshire for our holiday this year! From huge events like the Tour de France Grand Depart to many local festivals and fetes. As ever you can catch them in your Handy Mag.
Prepare to go Green with FREE electric car charges! This 3.7kw basic home charger allows you to charge your electric or hybrid vehicle safely overnight!
• •
Takes between 6-8 hours to charge the vehicle No need for the property owner to currently own a plug-in electric vehicle
There are a finite number of units available and these will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. A national grant scheme, funded by OLEV allows YESSS Electrical Distributors to offer a FULLY SUBSIDISED standard 3.7kW home charging unit which Adrian Smith Electrical Contractors will install free for people in our area. For more information please call: 01904 422112 or email: info@pod-point.co.uk
My two young adults are once again in the midst of exams and revision. With two years between them it seems like a GCSE or an AS/A level exam is always to hand. Good luck to all students taking exams this spring. You will look back on them as I do – a complete blur, kind of fun and worth it in the end. Having had a couple of comments from readers who have dropped their competition entries to the office this month, we have decided to put in the answers for the last edition (p73). I’m sorry those little blighters are so difficult to find! I hope we’ve made it a bit easier this month! Well done to Linda Mitchell of York for winning the March competition. Until next month…

YORK MAN TO RIDE THE TOUR DE FRANCE ROUTE IN AID OF MARIE CURIE
Y
ork commercial agent Mike Hughes of licensed property specialists Sidney Phillips has raised more than £10k over the last 3 years for charity and now he’s part of the Tour De France. Each year Mr Hughes sets himself a challenge to push himself to the limits on a bicycle for charity. This year is no different as he aims to complete the hardest challenge he has ever attempted. Mike has pledged to raise £19,000 for Marie Curie, the official charity of the Tour de France Grand Depart, by taking part in the Power Peloton ahead of this year’s Tour De France in the UK. The Power Peloton, a feat of endurance, will see 25 participants take on the gruelling roads of stage one of the Tour de France’s Grand Départ just hours before legends such as Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish. Mr Hughes is not content with just doing the first stage however, on 24th July he will set off from London for Paris cycling with Marie Curie to finish off what he started. He will eventually ride down 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

TO ANNUITISE OR NOT TO ANNUITISE – Wilson, Straight talking THAT IS THE QUESTION Julie Chartered Financial Planner fluctuate depending on the performance of the underlying investment. And it’s not all about risk either. Death benefits, spouse’s pensions, inflation and a whole host of other factors need to be considered. And just because you can take what you like from your pension doesn’t mean you should. After all, what are you going to do with it? Let’s say you have a pension worth £100,000. After 25% tax free cash, you’ll have £75,000 left. So you take it all out. You’ll have to pay tax on it – some at 20% and some at 40%. And then what? You put it in the bank? Really? So you’re going to take it out of a tax free environment, pay tax on it, and then invest it in a taxable environment. Or maybe you’ll buy a lamborghini? And live on fresh air for the rest of your life? It’s just plain bonkers.
Y
ou’ll have no doubt heard about Osborne’s “shock announcement” in the Budget that, with effect from April 2015, “no one will have to buy an annuity.” Well, I have a shock announcement too. No-one has had to buy an annuity for almost 20 years. The requirement to annuitise – that is, swap your pension pot for an income for life - was introduced by the Finance Act 1956. In 1995, in response to falling annuity rates, “Income Drawdown” was introduced as an alternative. Drawdown involves taking an “income” roughly equivalent to an annuity directly from your pension pot. The rest stays invested. There’s a huge difference between annuity and drawdown. If you buy an annuity you buy a “guaranteed income for life”. If you drawdown, your pension pot and potential future income will
The factors that need to be considered as you approach retirement haven’t changed. You need to work out how much you want to live on and what’s important to you, given your own personal circumstances, and then figure out the most tax efficient way of going about it. (Just for the record, I think this whole pension liberation thing has fiasco written all over it. There’ll have to be some major changes to current pension rules for it to work as Osborne outlined. We’ll be following the consultation very closely. Watch this space!)
If you want a FREE no nonsense chat about how to make sure your money lasts as long as you do and that anything left over goes to your family and not the Government, call us today and we can outline your options, the pros and cons of the different routes, and help you figure out what’s best for you.

TRAVEL Istanbul
By Solange Hando
and chariots have long gone but today the square is graced by a pretty gazebo-style fountain and obelisks and columns rising through the greenery. At the other end is Hagia Sophia, the world’s largest cathedral for 1000 years, later converted into a mosque and now a dark cavernous museum. The Chora Monastery went through a similar fate but the finely restored mosaics and frescoes are well worth a detour, just steps away from the lovely Ottoman houses climbing up the hillside with overhanging upper floors and bright façades.
P
oised on the old Silk Road, Istanbul is a glistening city of palaces and mosques, sparkling fountains, leafy squares and breezy waterways. The legendary Bosphorus flows through the heart of town, linking the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and marking the boundary between Europe and Asia. On the western side, the inlet of the Golden Horn heads down to the tip of the peninsula and an amazing treasure trove of cultural highlights. Named Byzantium, then Constantinople and later Istanbul, the city prospered during the Eastern Roman and Ottoman empires, with a brief interlude of Venetian rule. All left a colourful legacy but the top attraction remains the Topkapi Palace built in 1453. Perched above the confluence of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn, it offers one of the most glorious panoramas in Istanbul and fine museums displaying all sorts of exhibits, including the dazzling Imperial Treasure and its 86 carat Spoonmaker’s diamond. After such opulence, the Blue Mosque welcomes you like a breath of fresh air with a vast arcaded courtyard and cascading domes framed by slender minarets. The lofty prayer hall oozes peace and simplicity, flooded in natural light as the sun filters through 260 stained glass windows, lighting up some of the 20,000 blue tiles which give the mosque its name. It stands on the edge of Sultanahmet Square, once a Roman Hippodrome holding up to 100,000 spectators. Wild beasts

Meanwhile down town, the legendary Grand Bazaar claims over 4000 shops jostling cheek by jowl in a grid of over 60 streets. It’s one of the world’s largest covered markets, a dizzying place where the air smells of spices and apple tea, water pipes bubble in every corner and locals and visitors bargain for amber beads, gilded icons, copperware, embroidered slippers, leather, antiques, carpets or mother of pearl. It’s a city within a city with its own marble fountains, cafés, hammam and mosques. Shopping over, it’s good to stroll through the streets where more wonders await, here a shrine, there remains of the Roman aqueduct, the iconic double-decked Galata bridge, packed with fishermen, the secluded tea gardens, the parks blooming with tulips and roses or the cool waterside promenade with superb views of the city’s skyline and by clear weather, the idyllic Princes’ Islands in the distance. But the ultimate treat is sailing on the Bosphorus lined with myriad historical buildings. There are summer palaces and pavilions, fragrant gardens and villas in pastel colours, now a Venetian scene, now an Arabian dream or a 21st century call as an ocean liner approaches the gleaming suspension bridge. Cargo vessels, galleons, luxury yachts, fishing boats, ferries, it’s a busy channel yet totally enchanting. The old fortress still guards the narrowest point while scenic bays and seafood restaurants beckon along the shores. When night falls over the strait and lights twinkle all around, Istanbul is one of the most magical cities on earth.

‘Inspirational’, ‘confidence-boosting’, and ‘invaluable’ are just three words that have been used to describe Make It Happen Mentoring, based in Haxby, near York. The not-for-profit organisation is helping local people find fulfilling, paid employment and furnished many others with skills sets and increased confidence to aid them in their future career ambitions.
Make It Happen has been at its Haxby location since December, and includes a retail unit which provides a multi-purpose ‘space’ to deliver information, advice, guidance and access to accredited learning. Howard said: “The retail shop ticks quite a few boxes. It benefits the surrounding community by stocking high quality, pre-owned items and sells them to consumers. The shop also offers an ideal environment for ‘on-the-job’ work experience for candidates seeking employment.

For example, we can help those who aren’t able to claim benefits too; some personal situations cause people to fall ‘through the cracks’ and we are here to help them.” Make It Happen Mentoring has numerous excellent testimonials, including this one from Julie Howarth Pulleyn: “I have found the coaching sessions which I had to be very helpful and I would recommend them I had been searching for work on my own, at home, for a long time and had begun to feel stuck and at a dead end. I felt I had tried all the things I knew about how to get a job and was at a loss. Just being able to talk about looking for work re focused me, gave me new ideas and unblocked a few things. The charity has helped thousands of people affected by the condition. From research, education, cancer care to respite services, this specialist, local charity has achieved incredible feats during its first quarter century. York Against Cancer’s Administrator, Keith Hayton, explains: “We have helped to dispel some of the fear that cancer can cause, and provide real support for those affected and their families. York Against Cancer can bridge gaps in care and work in tandem with the NHS and offer support.” Founded in 1987 by two surgeons, Steve Leveson and John Craven and research scientist Colin Garner, the innovative achievements of York Against Cancer include the following: • Setting up of the Cancer Care Centre at York District Hospital • Cancer Care Centre Administrator posts • Complementary therapy • A free, daily minibus service between York and St James’ Hospital in Leeds, taking the stress out of a busy journey • Wheel chairs at York District Hospital car park • Family Support Worker • Two Health Care Assistants • Five Specialist Oncology Nurses • A seaside respite apartment in beautiful Whitby available for three or four night stays, sleeping up to seven guests and beautifully decorated • Working with the University of York to set up the Jack Birch Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis, part of the university’s prestigious Biology Department In addition to these achievements, York Against Cancer also supports education and research into the condition. “York Against Cancer can bridge gaps in care and work in tandem with the NHS and offer support.” believes that awareness is a crucial way of helping fight the fear of the disease. To help achieve this, local primary schools have been presented with an education pack suitable for Key Stage One and Two teaching. And while the fight to understand cancer continues, the reality is that York Against Cancer’s fantastic work requires funding to help provide these essential services. An events calendar is already in place for 2014, including Steve Knightley at Sheriff Hutton Hall on Friday 4th April, and York Swings Against Cancer at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Sunday May 18th from 7pm. Other events will take place throughout the year to raise funds for the charity. Steve Leveson, one of the founders of York Against Cancer, says: “One of the reasons for setting up York Against Cancer was the fact that the public needed more information about cancer. Since helping set up the charity, the science and research has been productive and additional patient-related activities have drawn acclaim from many organisations. Most importantly, the public have benefited greatly and have been very supportive and appreciative.” Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th May

BEAUTY
Age-Proof Your Hair
By Helen Taylor Instead of opting for a block shade, choose a base colour that’s no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hue, and add highlights. Not only will your hair look younger, your face will too. CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION Smother the lengths and ends of your hair with a rich deep-conditioning treatment once or twice a week. Try hair oils and products that are specially formulated for ageing, thinning, or dried-out hair.
Y
ou’re probably all too aware that you need to look after your skin if you want to stay looking younger for longer – but have you ever thought that you might need to age-proof your hair as well? Hair, like skin, suffers two types of ageing: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic ageing is the effect of everything that your locks are exposed to, like heat-styling, sun damage, and colouring. Intrinsic ageing comes from below the scalp and reveals the signs that your hair is past its prime: reduction in melanin, decline in sebum production, and a change in hair diameter. What that means is that greys start to appear, the shine starts to disappear, and your hair loses its bounce. Hair growth also begins to slow over the years, so it’s harder to achieve the length you loved when you were younger. Ageing a natural process, but there’s plenty you can do to slow it down. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR HAIR Try to limit extrinsic damage. Lay off the heated styling tools; prevent your hair from being frazzled by the sun by applying a deep conditioner to the lengths and ends when you’re on the beach; and cut right back on products that can dry your hair, like hairsprays. RECONSIDER YOUR COLOUR Although you might colour your hair to hide greys, choosing the wrong hue can be very ageing. An all-over colour can be hard to wear as you get older. 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
TRY A NEW HAIRSTYLE It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, but out-of-date, unflattering styles really do make you look a lot older than you are. That’s why it’s important to take a fresh look at yourself every so often. Talk to your stylist, or try a new salon. The opinion of someone who doesn’t already know you and your hair can result in a fantastic new look. Any hairdresser worth their salt can advise on what styles work best for thinning or ageing hair, but generally it’s worth considering the following: LENGTH – Long locks look lovely if they’re bouncy, thick, and full of life, but if that’s not the case then they really aren’t worth holding on to. Chopping long hair into a flattering, blunt, midi-cut is a quick way to create more youthful-looking hair. Ridding your tresses of dead split-ends improves condition, and a blunt cutting technique will create the look of fullness. FRAME YOUR FACE – Try a fringe, or have some soft layers added to the styling around your face. This lifts your features and makes you look younger. A PROFESSIONAL OPINION IS BEST Although it’s normal for your hair to show signs of change such as thinning over the years, it’s worth seeing your GP if you notice any sudden changes. Hair loss can be caused by hormone deficiencies – low thyroid levels, for example – a deficiency in nutrients, stress, and the side-effects of various medications. So if you’re in doubt, ask your doctor’s advice.

AT CASTLE HOWARD Duty comes in many forms, and aristocratic men and women have responded to this call in various ways: military, political, religious, and social. Generations of Howard sons went to fight overseas, but the impact of war was often more powerfully felt at home: bereavement and loss were shared by the Howard family, staff and tenants, and their stories are now told in a commemorative exhibition, Duty Calls: Castle Howard in Time of War Illustrated with documents and photographs, Duty Calls tells various stories from WWI and WWII, including: Rosalind, the 9th Countess, refusing to make Castle Howard available to the military in September 1914; the story of her son Geoffrey commanding a fleet of London buses in Belgium that ferried troops to the front (blind in one eye he was not able to fight in the trenches); the tragic death of his younger brother Michael at Passchendaele in 1917; and most surprising of all, the extraordinary diary of Private James Prest from his time as a prisoner of war in 1918, generously loaned by his son John who lives in Coneysthorpe. There is also a reminder that life went on as normal despite the conflict - when the house was a school the headmistress asked for modifications to be made to the house whilst occupied by so many pupils in the same week as thousands of British troops were lying exhausted on the beaches of Dunkirk awaiting evacuation. 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Due to the wealth of material discovered in the archive at Castle Howard, some of the stories did not make the exhibition, including the touching episode of how the estate horses were requisitioned by the army in 1914, with the request by the agent that the children’s ponies be returned after the conflict. These stories will now be shared in a new commemorative event Duty Calls: Share Our Story on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2014, when visitors will be invited to find out more about the impact of war on the estate, and watch the story of the horses commandeered for the war effort in The Final Charge. There will also be a display of vehicles from the period, traditional fairground rides and music hall style entertainment.
THE EXHIBITION DUTY CALLS: Castle Howard in Time of Wa r is on display in the house unt November, with admissiilonSunday 2nd the ticket price. A book to included in complement the exhibition is due to be pub lished during May. Find out more at www.castlehoward.co .uk

2014 Mitsubishi ASX
By James Baggott
THE KNOWLEDGE Model: Mitsubishi ASX 4 2.2 Di-D 4WD Auto Price: £23,899 Engine: 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel Power: 148bhp, 380Nm Max speed: 118mph 0-60mph: 10.6s MPG: 48.7mpg Emissions: 153g/km
will come as a welcome addition. The larger diesel develops 148bhp and 380Nm of torque.
C
rossovers are fast becoming the default car choice of the masses. Consumers love their commanding driving position and pumped-up looks while it seems manufacturers can’t stop releasing new versions. Pretty much all the mainstream makers now have an SUV in their range and that has led to the marketplace becoming rather overcrowded. That boom in choice for buyers has also meant those manufacturers that arrived early to the crossover party have been forced to up their games and release refreshed models. Skoda has recently renosed its Yeti, Nissan has worked its magic on the built-in-Britain Qashqai and now it’s Mitsubishi’s turn with its ASX. When it first appeared in 2010, the ASX was one of the more niche models in the segment, but even then it managed to chalk up 8,000 sales in its first year.
30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
However, that success was short lived: a devastatingly high Yen put up the price of imports and buyers fled to rivals. A year later sales had dropped to just 3,000. But Mitsubishi is bouncing back. The exchange rate has moved back in the maker’s favour, prices have dropped and the ASX has had a makeover. Mitsubishi has slashed prices of the ASX by an average of 10 per cent and for 2014 it’s been treated to a nip and tuck with plush interior fittings, new suspension tweaks and a panoramic glass roof with LED mood lighting on the top-of-the-range models. There’s a new engine too. Joining the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.8-litre diesel is a 2.2-litre diesel unit poached from the larger Outlander off-roader. By not offering a larger capacity diesel engine in the ASX range at the start, Mitsubishi thinks it missed out on nearly 20 per cent of the market, so this new lump
Naturally that means more power and shove, but thankfully not at the cost of fuel economy. At 48.7mpg on the combined cycle, the ASX4 2.2 diesel is more economical than a number of rivals’ 2.0-litre diesel offerings, including the sector’s allconquering Nissan Qashqai. There’s also a new automatic gearbox thrown into the mix. That self-shifter has also been borrowed from the Outlander and with six ratios and paddles behind the steering wheel, it’s a smooth and precise set-up. Some models get a switchable four-wheel drive system. One press of a button on the centre console sends 30 per cent of the car’s power to the rear wheels, while a second prod locks the centre diff and splits power 50/50 front and rear. The ASX’s small dimensions always meant it was good to drive, but road noise was a bit of a let it down. These new 2014

That’s not to say it’s a perfect driving experience though. The steering still lacks crispness, there’s a fair degree of body roll and the ASX is sadly just not as refined or as comfortable as a Kia Sportage or Skoda Yeti.

Mitsubishi has splashed out on upgrading the interior. There are some more up-market plastics, “piano black” materials now adorn the dashboard and the top spec ASX4 gets that aforementioned panoramic glass roof, which makes the cabin wonderfully light and airy. But despite Mitsubishi’s efforts, compared to rivals, the interior still lacks a certain sparkle. That said, with revised pricing, unique styling and an enviable reputation for reliability, the ASX certainly deserves a second look if you’re in the market for a crossover – and if the sales figures are anything to go by, there’s a high chance that’s most of you. The range kicks off at £14,999, while the range topping ASX4 2.2 (tested here) is £23,899.

GARDENING
WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE
by Pippa Greenwood
A visit to your local garden centre or specialist aquatics centre, or a browse online, will reveal a plentiful choice of water features of all shapes, styles, and sizes; but before you commit yourself, just what are the main points to bear in mind?
A water feature adds a truly magical dimension to any garden, large or small. The sound of tinkling water and the movement of light on its surface both works wonders, even on a less than perfect plot, and can be just the finishing touch you need for a patio or back yard or for a much larger garden.
First, position. If you want moving water, your choice of feature will almost certainly need an electric pump, so there has to be a power-point nearby – an obvious point perhaps, but one that people do sometimes overlook. Do you want an eye-catching centrepiece for a formal garden, or just the music of running water as the soundtrack to your barbecues or alfresco Sunday lunch? In either case, you need to carefully consider the appropriate position. Any water feature from pond to delicate fountain can turn bright green in summer due to the build-up of floating algae. You can go a long way towards preventing this pea-soup effect by

Make sure it’s well away from overhanging deciduous trees, too, as falling leaves are likely to clog everything up. For smaller spaces or patios you’re best off with a self-contained and perhaps wall-mounted feature. There are lots of great self-contained water features available such as terracotta or glazed pot stacks with the water continuously circulated from one container to another by a hidden pump, so you would only need to top it up in the hottest weather to compensate for the effects of evaporation. Spouts and fountains are great fun in a garden. A spitting fish, frog, or gargoyle can add a touch of art – or humour – while its water-jet will oxygenate a pool, reducing algae and keeping the pondlife happy. If you want moving water and the reflections it provides but perhaps have toddlers, a stone-effect millstone with a low centrallypositioned jet spreading ripples of water across its surface is both beautiful and safe.

GARDENING CONTINUED... shallower water or boggy ground. Use plenty of them: they look gorgeous; they hide unsightly edges and signs of the liner; and they are a haven for wildlife. For a more formal look you’ll want fewer marginals, but some shapely rushes or ferns or some yellow or purple bog-iris will add extra impact.
Water-features attract wildlife, and on summer days you may well be visited by beautiful, colourful dragonflies or mayflies. If there’s any depth of water then many birds may also come to drink and bathe. And remember, even a small pond needs a safe exit-route in case wildlife such as hedgehogs pop by for a drink and inadvertently tumble in. A shallow beach of pebbles at one end should do the trick. If your feature has a sizeable surface, it’s well worth netting it in the autumn to catch falling leaves. Simple garden netting stretched taut over the surface is ideal. Remove it as necessary, tip off the leaves, and replace it until the worst of the leaf-fall is over. If leaves are allowed to accumulate in the water they’ll not only clog the pumps and reduce the depth of the water, but as they rot down they’ll produce methane gas which is toxic to pond life. In winter, try to stop the water feature from freezing up. If the weather forecast predicts extremely cold temperatures, smaller features are best emptied out completely and the pump cleaned up and stored in the shed. Ponds with fish need to have an ice-free area maintained on the surface or the fish may be killed by toxic gasses such as methane building up under the ice. Floating an old football on the surface helps, or you could melt a hole in the ice using the bottom of a pan of very hot water (but don’t pour the water in), repeating when the surface re-freezes.

Environmental Easaway Environmental is delighted to announce we have added a comprehensive commercial cleaning section to our impressive company portfolio. With a brand new website launched in January 2014 and the introduction of new employees, the last few months have been very exciting for the company. Our commercial cleaning service not only includes the standard expected options such as window cleaning, office cleaning and kitchen cleaning, but also a plethora of specialised services. These include life of grime cleans, crime scene cleaning and trauma cleaning, custody cell sanitation, hazardous waste removal and raw sewerage contamination cleans. As a result of our specialist cleaning services, we have already begun working with respected organisations, notably Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Housing. Recent projects include life of grime cleans at city centre locations where speed, quality and impeccable professionalism are required. Life of grime cleans essentially turn a house which has rubbish, waste, broken pipes, leaking taps and much more back into a home for a new council tenant. Often these cleans involve lots of ripping out of items and an awful smell but the job satisfaction that comes with being able to give someone a new home outweighs any horrific stench or sights. Company Secretary Tracey Phillips is delighted at the recent growth commenting: “This is another great step forward for Easaway Environmental. Being able to help other companies be more productive is something which we are all excited by and the job satisfaction that comes with that makes it exciting times for the whole company.” Easaway is able to offer one-off or provide a regular cleaning package for your office, commercial or industrial unit, so, if you are looking for a company who can work around your requirements, cause little disruption and provide that spotless clean, consider Easaway Environmental and call 0800 0830 617.

THE COUNTRYSIDE IS CALLING When Shakespeare wrote, ‘Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,’ it’s highly unlikely he was picturing Ma and Pop Larkin and a ‘perfick’ lifestyle in the rural southern counties of England. Comparing your love with a summer’s day though goes hand in hand with ripening apples in the orchard, meadows of wild flowers blossoming and our love affair with the lush, green pastures of early summer. Here are a handful of novels to spark the romance of this often tempestuous relationship with our landscape.
The Darling Buds of May
Swallows and Amazons
Far From the Madding Crowd
Cold Comfort Farm
H.E. Bates Get yourself some scones, clotted cream and jam and settle down with a nice cuppa. This is the story of the infectiously joyful and downright gorgeous Larkin family. If ever there was a couple with a lust for life, it’s Ma and Pa, who are just brimming over with unbridled enthusiasm for each other, their growing and extended family, and the idyllic rural setting they inhabit. It’s all apple and strawberry picking combined with family life and love. H.E. Bates’ love of the English countryside just exudes from the pages, bringing sunshine, even in the pouring rain. Thomas Hardy To Wessex first where young shepherd Gabriel Oak has put all his money into sheep. He falls for the younger and fiercely independent Bathsheba Everdene, who has come to live with her Aunt. Oak’s rejected marriage proposal is the least of his worries when tragedy strikes in the most dramatic and memorable way, ruining his livelihood. This was Hardy’s fourth novel, but his first real literary success, and his descriptions of a pastoral Dorset are just beautiful. It’s more English than Churchill drinking a pint of stout, sat astride a bull-dog, and is wonderful escapism.
A Kestrel for a Knave
Barry Hines To Yorkshire now, and a coming of age tale of love and respect between a boy and his bird of prey. Billy Casper’s life is far from the rural idyll of the Larkin family. It’s a tough existence in the mining town of Barnsley and he struggles to find any joy in his world at all. His life is transformed when he takes Kes under his wing, so to speak. Billy learns how to train and care for his bird in this gritty and poignant novel that’s been a classroom favourite for years. Escaping to the surrounding rolling hills enables both bird and boy to soar. It’s a fantastic novel and one that will stay with you for a long time. 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Arthur Ransome Life is going swimmingly for the Walker children, aka the ‘Swallows’, until they come across the ‘Amazons’: the fearsome Blackett sisters. John, Susan, Titty and Roger must stand their ground on Wild Cat Island as adventures abound in this classic tale. Set in the Norfolk Broads across a glorious summer holiday, it’s a story about growing up, and life on the ‘high seas’. This is what the six week break was created for; it’s time to escape and live out an alternative life where the children rule the waves and the grown-ups are nowhere to be seen. Stella Gibbons Newly-orphaned Flora Poste uproots and moves to rural Sussex to live with her relatives. And what a bunch of oddballs they are! The Starkadders are a family in crisis and Flora’s arrival at Cold Comfort Farm couldn’t have been timed better. She wastes no time in whipping them into shape with her own brand of common sense, resourcefulness and her willingness to boss other people around. This is a brilliant comic novel that will make even your family seem normal.
Wuthering Heights
Emily Bronte Set against a backdrop of the wild Yorkshire Moors, Wuthering Heights is Bronte’s masterpiece of jealousy and revenge, deep passion, and a love so intense that it’s destructive. Heathcliff is adopted by Catherine Earnshaw’s father and falls in love with his guardian’s daughter. When Mr Earnshaw dies, Catherine’s brother convinces Heathcliff that she doesn’t feel the same way and he leaves, returning some years later as a wealthy man, hell-bent on getting revenge. And so begins his unravelling, with the chaotic and tempestuous moorland helping to make this a violent and brutal novel.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Langton Court, Strensall Detached Bungalow: 3 beds, 1 bath Guide Price £260,000
So if you are thinking about springing into the housing market, here are six steps to successful selling:
FOR SALE
Why choose Hudson Moody? Hudson Moody ticks the following boxes when it comes to helping you sell your home: 3 local knowledge and expertise 3 realistic valuations 3 keep in contact 3 an enthusiastic yet professional team
3 open seven days a week 3 advertise widely 3 user-friendly website 3 listings on property portals 3 a lettings service

1. Spring-time selling demand can outstrip supply in terms of numbers of houses on the market, and this can keep house prices buoyant. 2. De-clutter and depersonalise your home – pack away ornaments, photographs etc, giving the prospective buyer a chance to imagine themselves in your house. This also means some of your packing is already underway! 3. If you can’t redecorate, then make sure your home is spotless – time for a traditional ‘spring clean’! Kitchens and bathrooms must be hygienic and fresh; ensure overstuffed cupboards, untidy bookshelves and similar aspects of your home are sorted out. 4. Instruct a solicitor and estate agent – local, efficient service is crucial, along with a good track record. 5. It is advisable to have a sales board erected so people know your house is on the market. People who are looking to move to York will often drive around the area and make a note of houses for sale. 6. Decide who is doing the viewings: either yourself or the estate agent. Have in mind a thoughtful method of showing a home indicating you are thinking about the buyer and what he/she wants.

ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES
RIVERS In the first three months of 2014 there have been two well publicised deaths in the rivers of York. These tragedies are thankfully rare but do have a massive impact on those directly involved and the community in general. There has been much written over the last months around the subject of safety along the Rivers but we would like to use this column to just reinforce a few safety tips. Whilst the recent tragedies have involved two young adults the advice given should be taken by any persons of any age. The Ouse and the Foss bring many benefits to the City of York, and the footpaths alongside each are often used by locals and tourists alike. In the same way that pedestrians need to be careful when walking alongside a busy road they need to be equally vigilant when walking alongside the river. Children should be kept within sight at all times and groups of youths or adults should behave appropriately and not view these areas as a place for horseplay. A seemingly innocent prank and pushing match can easily end with an individual in the river. Throughout the year York is a popular venue for people to meet for drinks, even more so in the Summer months when events such as the Races bring huge numbers into the city. Everybody is aware of the effects that alcohol has on them and would not consider getting behind the wheel of a car for example, but many people under the influence of alcohol will leave the city along one of the river paths. It should be noted that in the vast majority of these cases there are no tragic consequences but the public need to be aware of the potential risks. If you do decide to walk home from the city alongside either of the rivers then try whenever possible to walk as part of a group. Not only does this reduce the risks associated with the river but also the chances of becoming a victim of crime is much reduced if you are walking as part of a group. If you do

www.prospectdesign.co.uk find that only you will be walking in the direction that will take you down the river then consider your other options. Is there another route home you could take avoiding the river path? Are there any bus services still running at that time? The other alternative is to get a taxi of course. There are a number of taxi ranks in the city of York and several private hire firms and short journeys are not that expensive. Whilst the above advice has been written specifically with the rivers of York in mind it would also apply to Railway lines and crossings, of which there are a great number in York. This column provides only basic advice which I am quite sure most people will already have considered, however it does no harm reinforcing these messages. It is worth taking the time to consider your potential route home from the city centre however, and the routes taken by your children, just to minimise the risks associated with Rivers and Railways and also the general risk of becoming a victim of crime. Morrocan Stuffed Loin Of Pork Makes 4. Ready in 40 minutes
Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the 1. onion for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in half
the ground coriander and cumin and cook for 1 minute. Add the apricots, pine nuts, sultanas and cook rice and fry for 2-3 minutes until piping hot. Leave to cool completely then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
the oven to 220C/ fan 200C/gas mark 2. 7.Preheat Unroll the pork loin and spoon the cold stuffing down the centre. Re-roll the pork to enclose the filling and secure tightly with fine string at intervals.
Mix together the rest of the ground coriander 3. and cumin and rub into the scored skin. Weigh the stuffed joint then place it in a roasting tin.
Roast for 30 minutes then reduce the oven 4. temperature to 190C/fan 170C/ gas mark 5
This roast pork is full of flavour and the spiced fruit and nut rice stuffing makes a change from the usual sage and onion. For really crispy crackling, the pork rind needs to be finely scored right through to the layer of fat underneath – ask your butcher to do this for you.
INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 tsp each ground coriander and ground cumin • 40g ready-to-eat dried apricots, finely chopped • 25g pine nuts • 25g sultanas • 100g cold cooked basmati rice • 1 tbsp beaten egg • 1.5kg joint boned and rolled loin of pork with skin scored • Salt and freshly ground black pepper 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
and roast for a further 35 minutes per 450g. Cover loosely with foil towards the end of the cooking time if the cracking starts to overcook.
Remove from the oven and cover with foil. 5. Leave in a warm place for 20-30 minutes to allow the meat to rest before carving.
To make a delicious gravy, pour off any excess 6. fat from the roasting tin just leaving a little fat and the meat juices in the base. Heat the pan juices on the hob until sizzling. Stir in 1 tbsp flour and cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in 400ml apple juice or cider and 2 tsp Dijon mustard, scraping up any sediment from the base of the roasting tin. Bring to the boil then simmer, stirring all the time, until reduced and thickened. Season to taste then pour into a warmed jug or gravy boat.

ELLA... ON GOOD IDEAS
Since the industrial revolution, humankind has been a non-stop invention factory, producing more and more gadgets, gimmicks and devices year upon year. What with the knowledge and technology available nowadays, new inventions seem to increase exponentially in complexity. But, an idea doesn’t necessarily have to be complicated in order to be brilliant. In fact, some of the most incredible products of the most ingenious minds are so much more impressive than so-called landmark inventions, just by the virtue of their simplicity. An idol of mine, Douglas Adams once wrote: “It is a rare mind indeed that can render the hitherto non-existent blindingly obvious. The cry ‘I could have thought of that’ is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn’t, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too.” To me, it seems that some of those clever minds, and their staggeringly clever inventions, may have been neglected their fair share of awe. For example, before Mr. Robert Plath’s magical brainchild, everyone used to have porters and bellboys to carry their heavy luggage, or otherwise do it themselves. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the idea appeared to add little wheels onto suitcases. Now, in hindsight, that doesn’t seem all that impressive, but hindsight here is the key. What is astounding is the fact that this simple, easy, obvious solution was not thought of until this guy thought of it. Paperclips came into existence from the mind of Samuel Fay – he found a way to attach together fabric and paper without damaging the materials whatsoever. Again, a tiny piece of bent metal hardly seems that worthy of recognition, but think how many paperclips have you used in your life? How many have you used this week, or even today? Their design is in fact so flawless that it has remained unchanged for over 100 years. The same goes for post-it notes, Velcro, zips, millions of seemingly boring and obvious inventions were in fact not at all obvious until someone came up with them. I’ll even dare say it – sliced bread was a damn good idea (congratulations to Frederick Rohwedder). Ella 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

SHORT STORY CANDLES by Jackie Brewster
As Cassie walked up College Street she was accompanied by the unsettling feeling she had forgotten something. She was still in a bad mood with Mum for not allowing her to wear high heels, and Bethany for crying because she wasn’t invited to the party. Bethany was a strange kid. Her current obsessions were blowing out birthday candles and answering the phone. Cassie could tolerate the candle blowing, but the phone answering was too much, especially when a boy called for her. Mum encouraged Bethany, saying she was the perfect device for getting rid of both cold callers and boys. So Cassie had told Bethany that once you’re a teenager you don’t have candles anymore and Bethany had cried even louder and vowed never to become a teenager. The last thing Cassie heard as she slammed the front door was Mum saying, “One teenager in the house is quite enough, thank you”. Spots of rain splashed onto the pavement. She’d spent ages straightening her hair and now she was going to arrive at the party looking like an otter. With horror, she remembered what she had forgotten. She had borrowed Mum’s straighteners without asking and left them lying on her bedroom carpet; even worse, they were still switched on. The carpet would be melted. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The straighteners would be ruined. Mum was going to be furious. Her life wouldn’t be worth living. There had to be a way out of this. A devious thought crept into Cassie’s head. She had always forbidden Bethany from going in her bedroom but today she might make an exception. She pulled out her phone and dialled home. As expected, after a few rings, Bethany picked up. “Is Mum there?” Cassie whispered. “No”. Bethany said. “Can you do me a favour?” Cassie asked. “Okay”. Her four year old voice sounded even younger on the phone. “Go into my room and very carefully un-plug Mummy’s straighteners”. Even as she spoke Cassie knew this was a terrible idea. “I’ll bring you back some cake if you don’t tell Mum”. This bribe did not make her feel any better. “Mummy said I’ve got to stay in the lounge”. Bethany said. “Where is Mum?” Cassie asked. “She’s in the loft”. Bethany answered. “What’s she doing up there?” “She’s gone to get the candles”, Bethany said, “I’m allowed to blow them out later”. “Okay, so while she’s up there, sneak into my room”. Cassie continued. “No. I’m waiting for the candles”. Bethany insisted and hung up.
beginning to smell. Mum could discover the straighteners at any moment. Cassie looked at her watch. The party was about to start. She should turn off her phone, go to the party, and by the time she got home Mum might have calmed down. She would be grounded forever but at least she wouldn’t miss the party. She groaned, and looked down at her feet. Ten minutes later Cassie burst through her own front door. “Only me!” She yelled, dashing upstairs, “Forgot something!” She flicked her bedroom light on. The bulb had gone. Cassie cursed and dropped to her knees, feeling gingerly around on the carpet for the straighteners. When she finally closed her fingers around them they were completely cold. The carpet was undamaged. “The power’s been off since you left”. Mum called, “Do you want a candle?” “No need!” Cassie stealthily returned the straighteners to Mum’s dressing table and skipped back downstairs. She was out the front door, on her way to the party once more; grateful she wasn’t wearing high heels.
Cassie stamped her feet in fury. The melting carpet would be Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th May

Top Tips from a dental professional
Giving Your Child Good Teeth For Life. Part 2 The health of your childs ‘baby’ teeth is just as important as their permanent ones. Your baby will by Christine Parker normally start to develop teeth BDS (GDC 72136) around 6 months however this varies. As soon as they are coming through it’s important to clean them, as a creamy layer of plaque will develop. Make brushing fun - you don’t want a battle every day! A good technique is to sit your baby in your lap, facing away, with their head into your chest so you can look down onto their teeth. Gently pull the lower lip down until you can see the teeth to clean them. There are lots of different brushes, choose a small soft one, or use a piece of gauze when there are just a few teeth. Gently brush or wipe the teeth praising all the time and use just a smear of toothpaste. Then a big cuddle at the end! As a qualified dentist I have no objection to a clean dummy as these will eventually be discarded unlike their thumbs! Never dip the dummy in anything. The hydration of your baby should be in order of preference, breast milk, formula then plain boiled water. Drinks in ‘shoot’ style bottles or with a teat/ spout mean the front teeth are bathed in acidic or sugary liquid. This is particularly harmful if the child has the drink ‘on demand’ or during the night. When teething your baby may experience pain and tenderness in the mouth and may drool excessively a stick of peeled, cold carrot or a cold teething ring can numb the area and help bring relief. Between 6 and 18 months your baby is most likely to try new foods. Aim for a balanced diet and keep sweet foods as a weekend treat. Baby food manufacturers encourage you to give your child a pudding (it doubles their profits). Take your baby to the dentist with you, we love to see them, even if they cry. They will get used to coming, so when it’s their turn for a check it will be familiar to them.

F
rom decking to fencing, summer houses to log cabins, Apex Shed and Fencing Specialists, near Strensall, can offer high quality timber products along with excellent customer service. An established small family business which started in 2002, Apex began by making simple fence panels and trellis work at home for local landscape gardeners and fencing contractors. Their reputation for quality and value has grown over the years and Apex now manufacture and retail fences, sheds and other garden timber products at their large workshop off Pottery Lane, Strensall. Ricky Bellhouse and his staff have a vast knowledge of timber products and offers free advice to his customers. He says “We
are keen for our customers to leave with the correct product for their particular circumstances. DIY enthusiasts are welcomed! Our timber ranges should have a long life and stand up to all the British weather can throw at them.” Ricky is keen for customers to visit their site in Strensall where there is a huge range of fencing, sheds and garden furniture on display. Many products are unique to Apex so the showroom is worth a visit if you are considering what sort of timber might fit in your garden. Personally I didn’t know there was such an enormous range of different types of fencing!
Being a modern company they are also aware of the impact of their consumption on our natural resources and the products they supply are produced from timber certified in accordance with FSC and PEFC rules, ensuring minimal environmental damage by replanting saplings to create new forests. Ricky says “Your outdoor space is there to be enjoyed so why not get some inspiration from our show site where you will find many of our products on display. Or visit our website at www.apexfencing.co.uk for more examples of our work.”
Apex have also teamed up with several market-leading suppliers to provide a collection of timber products designed to offer the perfect decorative solution for your garden environment, providing space, privacy and security.

A BETTER LIFE MAY DAY FORAGING by Derek Thompson
Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www. alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com
T
he 1st of May usually means one thing in our house - a trip to the Obby Oss festival at Padstow, on Cornwall’s north coast. It’s generally a glorious day, especially when it doesn’t fall on a weekend or a bank holiday (less traffic). We like to get to Padstow early and soak up the atmosphere. There is drumming and singing, streets bedecked with greenery, and people wearing sprays of cowslips and other flowers. Some say it’s a halfremembered nature and fertility festival, but even if its origins lie in the 1800s it’s a great way to welcome in the summer. And after the winter we’ve had - and the spring too - our garden needs all the help it can get. Mixed in with all the folklore is a tradition of our own - the annual Padstow crazy golf match in which, invariably: a) Anne will forget to write down her score and then introduce a new version of mathematics. b) I will play one or two epic holes yet somehow still end up losing by a wide margin. In keeping with our greener aspirations, a trip out is a perfect opportunity to do a bit of foraging. Our first stop is a

lay-by that has fresh mackerel on sale (top tip: always check the eyes). From there, with our trusty wild food guides stowed aboard, we head west a little, still hugging the north coast, to visit friends on the north coast who are blessed with both fields and patience. We don’t travel up country that often, so knowing more experienced foragers is a real bonus. Left to my own devices I can easily find wild garlic and nettles, but that’s not much of a meal. Successful (i.e. safe and bountiful) foraging requires knowledge and experience, as well permission from the landowner. Last time we ventured north, we managed to forage for cow parsley, chickweed and the aniseed flavoured sweet cicely. We thought we were doing brilliantly until our friends told us that they had created a variety of soil types and seeded them to encourage wild food. Even so, a find is a find. When we get home, while Anne cleans the fish (I can’t help it if I’m squeamish), I introduce the foraged leaves to a homegrown lettuce and usually we wrap the mackerel in foil with butter and pop it in the oven.
Once, in a spirit of adventure, I tried smoking mackerel indoors, following Alan Titchmarsh’s Complete Countryman (an encouraging gift from a neighbour). To be honest, it was a bit of a kerfuffle, what with salting the fish beforehand, lining the pan with foil, adding the smoking mixture; laying the fish on chopsticks, popping it in the pan and then covering it with a lid. Smoking fish is one talent I’ve yet to master properly, but if you haven’t put the pan lid on properly it’s also a great way to test your smoke alarm. A foraged salad has a surprising range of subtle and bitter tastes, while steamed chickweed really tastes like spinach. As summer finally reaches our garden, it is possible to forage there for wild garlic, nettles and dandelion leaves (yes, really). Sadly, though, in my experience, you can never find a wild strawberry when you want one.

MISH MISH MY CONTINUED WEIGHT LOSS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets I have been losing more weight! It has had my owner flummoxed as all my bloods came back clear which ruled out the conditions that could start to affect a cat of my age and that would be consistent with my symptoms. She has been worried. I, however, have been perfectly happy, purring merrily to myself as I sunbathed on the patio table, basking in beautiful spring sunshine. I was disturbed from my thoughts by my owner, who came out, stared at me, then took my heart rate which was 200 beats per minute. Too fast for a healthy cat, but normal
for me of late. She stroked me and frowned as she could feel every part of my spinal column. As I looked in the conservatory window I saw myself, my fur dull, greasy and scurfy. I looked like I had aged dramatically over the last couple of weeks since my last visit to the Vets. I am half the cat I used to be, but I feel fine, a bit vague at times, lacking appetite occasionally but I’m always purring. My owner is concerned as she saw me standing in my bed staring into space as though I had forgotten why I was there. Then there was the occasion I shot through the kitchen door at breakfast time, desperate to get to my biscuits only to forget why I was there. My owner found me under the dining room table staring at the wall. I was very surprised when she placed a bowl of food under my nose and I let out a little miaow before eating them slowly. As a result here I am again. At the Vets! I was here a few weeks ago and weighed just 6.1kg. I’m a tall and long cat and used to weigh 8kg I was mildly overweight but not overly, I was a panther. We were both surprised at my weight loss but attributed it to the fact I was no longer getting fed extra dinners from our old neighbours as the bloods ruled out any medical conditions.

YORK • MAY 2014 • ISSUE 101 Today my owner gasped as I purred happily on the cat scales. I weighed just 5.38kg. - a dramatic loss in such a short space of time. The vet examined me and palpated my abdomen. Then I heard the words no one wants to hear. She explained she could feel an intestinal mass about the size of a tangerine. Lymphoma she called it. My owner was devastated. She said she had had her suspicions when I continued to lose weight and condition that there must be something more sinister going on but she convinced herself I had a treatable disease. The vet x-rayed me to see whether the cancer had spread to any other organs and to see if my intestines were attached to the tumour. It looked positive but she explained that until she started surgery she could not be sure whether it would be possible to fully remove the tumour. She took a fine needle aspirate from the tumour, which looks at the cells to send for analysis to a certain how aggressive the cancer was. When I was examined a few weeks ago the vet did not feel the tumour so my owner is concerned it has grown rapidly. The other option is to treat me with steroids but this will only support me not cure me. The future is looking bleak for me but I hold out hope for receiving my lab results tomorrow...

MR BUTTONS This cheeky young man goes by the name of Mr Buttons…and what a splendid cat he is! Despite having a difficult start to his life Mr Buttons has managed to accentuate the positives and lives his life to the full. He is a lively and happy cat and enjoys nothing more than engaging in various fun activities – his favourites are Pounce on the Catnip Mouse, usually ending in a very dead catnip mouse, and Belt the Pingpong Ball, which often ends with a squashed pingpong ball and very pleased looking Mr Buttons. Life wasn’t always fun for Mr B. He was found hiding in a hedge after being hit by a car, with a broken leg, feeling very sorry for himself. Luckily the vets were able to mend his leg, and he has healed up very well, enabling him to charge around his pen at great speed! The recover process was quite difficult for Mr Buttons because he had to be confined to a smaller pen whilst his leg mended, so now he’s more than ready to get out
of captivity and back into the big wide world. Mr Buttons needs a new home where he has plenty of space to keep him occupied and a robust family who will enjoy having such a large character sharing their house. Mr Buttons just loves attention from people and would be most happy having folk around who have plenty of time to play with him and keep him entertained. In return the lucky new family will have a fabulous edition to their household, a great cat that will give them lots of affection and lots of entertainment in return. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt Mr B or any of our other cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All of our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. York Rouleurs Newly-established and now having had our first 3 rides, York Rouleurs is a group for cyclists in and around the York area who wish to ride with others. Many cycling clubs and teams exist, but with an expectation that you’ll meet on a particular day at a particular time each week. There are also the cost implications. We are unique in that there is no expectation of riders. Turn up if you can and when you can. Rides are Sundays at 9am from the Askham Bar Tesco recycling centre. Distance is approximately 30 miles at a steady 15-18mph, but this isn’t set in stone. THE LIFE LIST
WHAT WE LEARNED FROM 1970S TELEVISION
S
ome say television has become our unofficial childminder and educator, even if programme quality has improved over the years. However, there’s a lot to be said for the way things used to be on the goggle box. Dixon of Dock Green and Z-Cars taught us how to behave, what not to do and the notion of consequences. It also introduced us to community policing without the need for a mission statement. Blue Peter proved that pretty much anything is possible with empty yoghurt pots, loo roll holders, coat hangers, sticky backed plastic, and a little creativity.

JOINERY AND PROPERTY MAINTENANCE High class carpentry and joinery. Floors, doors and fitted furniture. Staircases, ballustrading, handrails.
If children’s TV finishes by 6pm it’s easier to do your homework, go out and play, or read a book. Disney programmes were a big event on bank holidays. You anticipated them and appreciated them, even the rubbish parts, because you knew you wouldn’t see another one for ages.
Property maintenance and care. Plastering, tiling and decorating. Period restoration, building repair.
Vintage Dr Who, along with groundbreaking sci-fi programmes like Timeslip and Ace of Wands, showed us that the best special effects were in our imaginations.

STAR CHEF LINE-UP AT MALTON FOOD LOVERS FESTIVAL
By Tom Naylor-Leyland
“It was Antonio Carluccio who dubbed Malton Yorkshire’s Food Capital several years ago and, since then, the town has emerged as a foodie destination for all who care about where their food comes from. There is now a year-round list of foodie activities and events. The Malton Cookery School opens on May 16th in the old congregational chapel on Saville Street – a new Temple to Yorkshire Gastronomy! On the second Saturday each month, the award-winning Malton Monthly Food Market is busier than ever and the Made in Malton producers’ scheme is doing great too. In fact, if you haven’t visited the new Brass Castle Brewery (just off Yorkersgate) please do, it is fab! “The town’s flagship foodie event is, of course, the annual Food Lovers Festival and this year’s dates are Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2014. Patrons include Jean-Christophe Novelli, the nation’s favourite French chef; BBC stars the Incredible Spice Men; and the glamorous Welsh-Italian Chiappa Sisters who featured on Channel 4. They, along with fantastic local Yorkshire chefs, will be giving live cooking demonstrations as well as providing cookery master classes for small classes of eight (tickets required). There is a huge new festival bar, family entertainment, a new music stage and last, but not least, 160 stalls sporting the finest Yorkshire produce and street food. “The Festival is hailed as one of the premier festivals of the north and is free to visit! For more information or to reserve tickets, visit www. maltonyorkshire.co.uk.”

BLACK BELTS
FOR JUNIOR MEMBERS Haxby Shotokan Karate Club is celebrating after four club members were awarded their black belt at a JKS karate grading course. The four new black belts, Elizabeth age 11, Oliver age 13, Jack age 13 and Thomas age 15 were awarded their black belt by Alan Campbell, Head of JKS England and well done to fellow club member Lee, age 12, who passed 2 out of 3 parts of the grading. Twenty one club members, ranging from age 5 to 54, successfully graded making it one of the club’s most successful gradings. Chief Instructor Sensei Mike Gude stated ‘all of our Club members put in a brilliant performance and for some it was their first time grading. To have four of your students be awarded their shodan at the same grading is amazing and I am proud of everyone who attempted their grading’. Elizabeth’s dad Ian said “We have always been impressed with Elizabeth’s commitment and effort, both in training and competition. To see her, with the help and support of her senseis and club mates from Haxby, achieve her black belt at the first try and at such a young age has made us very proud”. Despite having ten black belts the club remains a place for all ages and abilities to train, with members ranging from beginners to black belts and from age 5 to over 60. If you fancy joining in then why not sign up to the Club’s four week beginners course for adults. 5 YEAR 50K
AT WIGGINTON GRASSHOPPERS
W
igginton Grasshoppers is a communityrun football club, serving the local area to provide grassroots football. Currently with 20 teams including boys, girls and open age (not forgetting the 2 nursery teams!), the Club encourage everyone to get involved and reap the benefits of playing football in a safe and welcoming learning environment. “We have served several thousand children and hundreds of adults over the last 30 years” says Mike Blacker, Club Chairman. “Wigginton is a large village and the football club is a big part of the community heritage. In an era of growing health problems, I feel that we owe it to the community to get our children active and give them the opportunity to lead a healthier life and develop lifelong social skills” The Club is over 30 years old and despite their proud heritage, the current facilities at Wigginton are in need of modernisation! They have recently launched a 5 year fundraising campaign to help work towards a plan to redevelop their facilities. This involves raising £50,000 which will be spent on providing changing rooms, store rooms, a kitchen, and possibly even a 3G artificial pitch to ensure all year round activity. This is an ambitious target but one the Club are
68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
confident in achieving which they believe will better serve the community for many years to come. They have just teamed up with Localgiving.com to make it easier for community groups like themselves to fundraise. Every £10 donated to Wigginton Grasshoppers through the site turns into £12.50 as the Club qualifies for Gift Aid (assuming you are a UK taxpayer). Mike says that one of his biggest challenges is “trying to achieve this with only a handful of people who tirelessly dedicate a lot of their spare time to moving the club forward. It is not just about raising money, we also need more volunteers on the committee. A Club Treasurer and a Vice Chairperson are urgently required to assist the team, a Project Development Chairperson, a Fundraising Chairperson (and of course Fundraisers!) as well as enthusiastic people who can support the team in the areas of Sponsorship and Grants, Website and Social media are also required to help the Club achieve the 5 year 50k target!”
ANNUAL JUNIOR FOOTBALL GALA
On Saturday 24th May, in association with their main club sponsor ‘Haxby Group Practice’, the Club are hosting their Annual Junior Football Gala at Wigginton Playing Fields (just behind the Squash Club). The Gala brings together teams from the local area and beyond to play mini-soccer on a non competitive level for U7’s/U8’s with U9’s/U10’s playing in a knock out style competition. This is a really enjoyable day of football and the Club would like to welcome as many local people as possible to support the event. If you are a local business, organisation, or feel you could be part of the team to help support the Club going forward, please contact Mike Blacker on 07950 933310 or email grasshoppers1982@ yahoo.co.uk. To donate to the fundraising campaign just visit http://localgiving.com/charity/ wiggygrasshoppers
