ovember is a testing month, ever shortening days, memories of snow and ice now pending afresh and Christmas to relish (or dread). And with the economy not exactly warming the pockets, this year it comes with costs that need to be kept in check. The main thing is to look local for products and services as our local businesses offer great competitive prices…less driving = less fuel = cheaper! I actually quite like November and the excuse it gives me to cosy-up in front of the fire, with feel-good snacks that I probably shouldn’t eat – especially in the run up to Christmas excesses! With the bad weather also comes muddy dogs! We routinely give our two a hose down after a muddy walk. One of them loves this, but the other (our black lab) whimpers foul treatment and makes us feel like abusive owners! But I do sympathise, as

in making him stand under a cold hose pipe he may have a case! Luckily for him he has a coat a bit like Teflon and rarely gets so bad; whereas our Golden Retriever has a coat with remarkable water and mud gathering capabilities, and with his significant size it is simply extraordinary the mess he can create. There is only 1 edition of the Handy Mag left before 2012 which goes out at the end of November. The deadline is 8th November so if you would like to publicise any community events happening in December and January please let me know as soon as possible. Well done to Clare Mawson of New Earswick for winning the September competition. Until next month,

eith Williams can deal with crawling or flying insects and specialises in dealing with ants, plus rats, mice, moles, pest birds and any other creature threatening your peace or wellbeing. Infestations of insects and small birds or rodents can cause serious damage to a buildings’ structure, damage electrical wiring and contaminate food supplies. HuntCatchKill has contracts available to cover business premises, such as restaurants, farms or food stores, against a particular pest, or one-off jobs are available should a problem like a wasps’ nest arise. And to prevent the problem arising in the first place, Keith will carry out a free, no-obligation survey of your property or area to assess what protection may be needed. If you simply need a bit of free advice, you’re welcome to give him a call. HuntCatchKill is a local company which promises to offer competitive contracts, a prompt response and a personal service, plus the peace of mind that comes from knowing your property is pest-free. Happy customer D. Smith, from Wiggington, said: “On contacting HuntCatchKill Pest Control Services they arrived on time and dealt with our pest problem efficiently and effectively. I would not hesitate in recommending this company to others.” Andy Oliver, from Riccall, writes: “We had an ant problem; on calling HuntCatchKill Pest Control Solutions they were quick to attend and within a few days our problem was gone. Thanks for your efforts guys.” Safety is always a priority and Keith will always carry out a full risk assessment on any pest control job. He uses government-approved traps and materials that comply with the Wildlife and Countryside Act, and he’s a member of the National Pest Technicians’ Association. • info@thehandymag.co.uk

W Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer…

hen long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat

producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic Continued over ►

YORK converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient. The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness • • •

Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair. On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece. Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it.

FUN – CURIOSITY – CREATIVITY - CONFIDENCE – POTENTIAL

T

At The Mount Pre-School all our children are encouraged to develop their own ideas, make decisions, solve problems and take risks.

he extensive school grounds and facilities provide further opportunities for active learning. Every day, our children visit the adventure playground where they climb, swing, play and explore. In addition, our children visit our Woodland Area every week where there is a large tee pee, outdoor kitchen and classroom. Our children learn to express their curiosity freely asking

questions and finding out about the world around them. At the Mount PreSchool we ensure that our calm environment allows our children to feel safe, nurtured, happy and confident. We take our children on educational visits in

the local area and invite visitors into school which helps to bring learning to life and gives our children confidence to explore and make new

discoveries. Creativity thrives in our pre-school setting. Our children have the freedom to express themselves through art, dance, music and imaginative play. By drawing out our children’s natural curiosity and basing activities on their enthusiasms and interests, we can build the foundations of independent learning. We cater for the individual child and provide an environment that stimulates and accelerates learning. In our experience happy children learn. Our aim is to ensure that each one of our children is happy and confident at school, and is ready to move onto Reception.

FOOD

Pork

Goulash

01904 468777

Although originating from Hungary Goulash is a popular warming stew made in many Northern European countries. It is traditionally made with beef although depending on which meat tends to be reared locally it is also made with pork. Some cooks make it as a thick stew, others as a soup – I usually use my mum’s recipe which is for a stew but turn leftovers into a soup with the addition of some stock and chunks of cooked potato. My mum is from Germany and this is how she taught me to make it.

Serves 6 (or 4 with leftovers to make soup) 1 kilo of diced stewing pork 3 green peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped 2 onions, peeled and finely chopped 6 tomatoes roughly chopped 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced 1 tbsp tomato puree 3 dill gherkins, finely chopped 2 tsp caraway seeds 2 tbsp sweet paprika 1 tsp sugar Salt and black pepper to taste Olive oil To serve: Small pot of sour cream Small bunch of fresh dill, chopped Tagliatelle noodles  I usually cook this on the hob so you’ll need a large lidded pan or casserole dish that you can use on the hob. Failing that use a large frying pan and then transfer to an ovenproof dish to cook in the oven.  Heat the pan over a medium to high heat, add a glug of olive oil and quickly seal the pork, don’t worry if it goes watery and doesn’t brown, that’s fine.  Add the rest of the ingredients, give it all a good 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

stir and wait for it to come up to the boil. As soon as it does, cover the pan and turn down to a low simmer. Cook for about an hour, stirring frequently and checking it isn’t drying out – you want a rich sauce so add a little water if it looks dry, or if it looks too watery turn the heat up a little to reduce the sauce. If you are cooking it in the oven set the temperature to 180C/160 fan/gas mark 5 and cook for an hour. After this time check the pork for tenderness, depending on the cut it may need a further 30 minutes. Also check the seasoning. If you are cooking it in the oven I would allow a longer cooking time, up to 2 hours. When the meat is tender you can cook the noodles according to the instruction on the packet. At this stage if your sauce is a bit thin you can leave the lid off the pan and reduce it by turning the heat up a little but stir it occasionally to check it doesn’t burn on the bottom! When you are ready to serve, drain the pasta and pile onto a serving dish, cover this with the goulash and top with some sour cream and chopped dill. If you do have any left-overs for soup, make sure you heat the goulash with the stock and cooked potatoes until piping hot. You will need to check the seasoning again before serving with a swirl of sour cream.

Children in Need

Must-read titles

Recent years have seen a massive rise in the popularity of books depicting tortured childhoods - and although this may not be the happiest of subjects, many of these titles are fascinating, well-written and extremely emotive. This month, to celebrate Children in Need, we’ve put together a selection of the best books in this genre.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

An incredible story about the transformation of a quiet racism victim into a self-assured and confident young woman. As the first in a six volume series, here Maya Angelou tells the tale of her coming-of-age in awful circumstances, but finds strength in the birth of her son to discover her inner voice and passion for independence. Bad Blood by Lorna Sage

A fantastic memoir depicting three generations of the Sage family, and the family history which led to her own mother’s belief that Lorna was born with “bad blood”. Fear not, there is light at the end of the tunnel as Lorna’s life turns around with the arrival of a new husband, baby and university – and life away from the miserable Shropshire village she calls home. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

First They Killed my Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers

sadistic torture. Not a pleasant or an easy read, but nonetheless fascinating.

by Loung Ung

Penned by a survivor of the Pol Pot regime, Loung Ung spent the first part of her childhood growing up in comfort as the daughter of a Government Official, but when the Khmer Rouge stormed Phnom Penn in 1975, her life was transformed beyond belief. This title recalls her life in work camps, separated from her family and friends, and being trained as a child soldier, as she somehow found the bravery to fight on in search of a new life. A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer

One of the most famous titles depicting a shattered childhood, this is the horrific story of a boy referred to by his alcoholic mother as ‘an it’ and who suffered at her hands years of horrific abuse and

.

. Just out.

A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines

Life is tough for Billy Casper; brought up in a Yorkshire mining village, mistreated at home and in trouble at school. But life takes on a new meaning when he finds a kestrel and rears him as his pet ‘Kes’. Sad, intense and touching, this novel manages to conjure inspiration and awe through the eyes of an unlikely protagonist. Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

This may be yet another account of a tortured childhood, but as a brilliantlywritten memoir the tale is uplifting and told with humour and strength. Raised in a less-than-loving family, the author describes her upbringing faced with poverty, abuse and neglect, yet she writes with seeming acceptance and compels the reader from start to finish.

Breaking Night by Liz Murray

Born to an addict father and a mother who spent most of her daughter’s childhood in and out of a mental institute, Liz Murray ended up on the streets of New York at the tender age of 15. Desperate to salvage her life from turning into that of her parents, the author recounts her tale of how she enrolled in school, achieved a scholarship from the New York Times and went on to graduate from Harvard. A truly inspirational read.

What cars make sensible buys?

assing your driving test is one of the best feelings in the world – but the joy of finally getting your licence can quickly disappear when it comes to finding a car. Astronomical insurance costs can put many models out of the reach of teenagers, but don’t despair too much – there are options out there. You need to accept the fact that insurance is going to cost you more than the car, but you can help cut the price by taking a Pass Plus course or asking to be added to your parents’ policy as a named driver. That will mean talking to them first though. If that sounds too challenging there are new insurance schemes that place a black box in your car to monitor your driving style and charge you accordingly – this can be a great way of cutting premiums. But what cars make sensible buys? Here, we have scoured the classifieds to hunt down a few options you may want to consider.

Peugeot 106

Toyota Yaris

from £300

from £750

They can be picked up for next to nothing and with a choice of engines and trims to suit most budgets, a 106 is a tempting option. Most are a bit basic, but they’re entertaining to drive and reasonably affordable to insure. However, they’re not known for their reliability so try and buy one with service history and have it checked over before handing over your cash.

One of the most bulletproof models if you want to avoid running repairs, a Yaris is a sensible choice. They’re roomy inside and if you can stretch to a diesel variant, trips to fuel stations will be relatively infrequent. Insurance costs are surprisingly affordable and it’s a safe option, but prices can reflect that.

MOTORING Fiat Cinquecento from £400 Made famous by TV show The Inbetweeners, this little city car wasn’t Simon’s motor of choice without good reason. It’s extremely cheap to run and insurance won’t be too painful either. Don’t expect much in the way of equipment and remember these Fiats can be a little unreliable, so budget for repairs.

Ford Ka from £300

Cheap to buy, run and fix and there’s thousands on the road to choose from. Even models with air conditioning and CD players can be had for under a grand, but keep an eye out for rust under the sills, behind the bumpers and around the fuel filler cap. And buy the latest one you can afford.

28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Citroen C1 from £2,700 This Citroen is the sister car of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo – not much changes apart from the badge. It’s good to drive and being relatively new it’s one of the safest options. However, insurance will be a bit more expensive than others and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with air con. Fuel economy will make up for the lack of equipment, but they are still pricey.

Finally, a couple of tips if you’re buying your first car: Always take someone with you who knows what they’re looking at, even – and don’t laugh – if that means your parents. Have the car checked over by a mechanic too – it’s often worth half an hour’s labour in a garage to save you big bills. And for more expensive cars fork out for an HPI check to ensure it’s not stolen (or ask your Gran to pay for it). Happy hunting! by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

A new plumber in town A fully qualified family-run independent business based in York - and with no call out fees!

T

here’s a new plumber in town with a great record of quality, reliability and honesty. Paul Griffin, of Jupiter Plumbing, is offering his excellent value plumbing and heating service to households throughout York and the surrounding area. He offers boiler services from as little as £40 – and is urging customers to get their boiler checked out sooner rather than later when we’re deep into the winter. He said: “A breakdown on Christmas Eve is too late to get your boiler fixed. It’s the last thing you should be ignoring as winter comes. Of course, there’s also the safety aspect as well. There are needless deaths every year from carbon monoxide poisoning – it’s like fixing the brakes on your car. Do it now, don’t leave it till it’s too late.” If a replacement boiler is required, Paul can supply and install one for as little as £1,500. No job is too small, however – don’t suffer from leaky taps or dodgy toilets, give Paul a call and put your mind at rest. If something goes wrong in the middle of the night, Jupiter Plumbing charges no call-out fees and they are available for emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For your convenience, if you need routine work, they’re happy to visit in the early evening. And because Paul knows the best business comes through referral, you’re guaranteed to receive a great customer service that you’ll be happy to rave about to your friends and neighbours. He is registered with OFTEC and the GasSafe register, and has a City and Guilds qualification in plumbing and heating. Paul comes to running his own business from employment with British Gas, and before that he worked for several plumbing companies. As well as traditional plumbing and heating, he can also install solar panels to provide you with hot water – as well as saving money and the environment. And if you’re wondering where the unusual

company name came from, it was named after ‘Jupiter’s Travels’, the story of Ted Simon, who travelled the world on his motorbike. Paul wasn’t only inspired to name the business after him – he is a motorcyclist himself and, so far, has travelled half the world! Recently relocated from the south-west, Paul is returning to his family roots – his family can trace its roots back for 200 years in Thirsk, where they worked as farriers and coopers. So for a genuine, trustworthy local plumber with a record of great customer service, contact Jupiter Plumbing on 01904 766732 or 07840 870352, visit www.jupiter-plumbing.co.uk or email pgriffin1@btinternet.com

arren Emmerson, owner, says “We provide a personal service for our customers, offering expert advice on design, layout, preparation and which tiles to choose to create their desired look. “Some customers don’t realise that you can get specific tiles for floors, walls and different rooms. Some tiles are stronger than others but the customer wouldn’t necessarily know this just from looking at it. This is when I like to talk to the customer about their requirements and make sure they are looking in the right direction”. 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Hedge your

Boundary

Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging.

I

f you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with wellestablished root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge.

So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m especially fond: Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade. Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime.

Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries. Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and

HOMES & GARDENS variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer. Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade.

Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather. Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring. Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure. Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart. Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.

remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants. Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring. Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils. Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive

Customer service is a priority for Mark Smith Electrical

W

hat is it that you should look for in an electrician? Qualifications, experience, trustworthiness and attention to detail are all important. Mark Smith is a qualified local electrician based in Haxby and his job is to provide your home with power in the safest possible way. Mark Smith Electrical was established in 2009. Mark is fully qualified to current regulations (17th Edition), Part P, registered with NAPIT (Trustmark approved) and JIB. For the customer, this means that you know you are getting someone who is qualified to certify all electrical work and will perform projects to the highest of standards.

Mark places a huge amount of importance on his customer service and says, “Customer service is a priority for me, every time. A big part of that is being a clean and tidy worker – I’m actually known for being a bit obsessive with a hoover! I love it when a customer says I’ve left their home so tidy they would almost think I’d never been there. “I am never late to an appointment - it is a personal grievance of mine - and I know that first impressions are extremely important. The customer will receive an honest written quote within a few days of my initial visit (unless it is an emergency). You will always have the work completed within pre-agreed timescales and hopefully be satisfied with my work. “I urge my customers to pass on recommendations if they are happy with my work and if not, let me know so I can rectify any problems”. This year Mark’s father retired from his job and has joined Mark in the business to help with the workload which covers a wide variety of jobs in the installation, maintenance and repairs of both domestic and commercial electrical systems. Mark’s main specialism is house rewires where he can provide mains board upgrades and periodic maintenance. He explains, “I can test a property, make necessary changes, provide a test certificate and upgrade it to the latest standards if that is required. If you are moving or have an old property this service will give you peace of mind.” Whilst this is Mark’s specialist area of work, he is also extremely proficient in all other areas and can provide all electrical services from adding a socket to new build extensions. Innovative technology such as Taptile, Tile Vision and home automation can be introduced to the home and Mark uses his talents to help this happen.

If you are looking for a reliable, experienced electrician who puts the customer first, give Mark a ring for a free consultation. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 37

ork Opera’s main aim is to bring opera of high quality to the people of York and its surrounding area. Formed in 1966 performs both serious and light works. Their regular fare includes ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, ‘I Pagliacci’, ‘Nabucco’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Aida’ and ‘Carmen’. In addition to these large-scale works they have also staged Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’, ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and ‘Don Giovanni’ and we regularly produce Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The lighter works not only provide variety of style, but also help to subsidise the more demanding repertoire. The group currently consists of approximately 70 singing members along with numerous friends,

associate members, orchestral musicians and technical volunteers whose provide vital support. The company can now draw on a substantial list of principals, both amateur and professional, some local and some who travel in from across the region. With the range of work produced, however, there are regular opportunities for younger and developing singers to step into principal roles. In 1849 Otto Nicolai composed some wonderful music for The Merry Wives of Windsor, an opera based on the comic Shakespearean play, but tragically died at a young age soon afterwards. Tickets for the production are available from York Theatre Royal Box Office on 01904 623568.

COMMUNITY

A warm woolly November...

THE FORESTERS FOLK & FUN CHRISTMAS CONCERT at HAXBY MEMORIAL HALL

H

ello again.

November… time to get the log basket filled, the woolly socks out and pack away the skimpy skirts and sandals. But more importantly, November is a time for Rockets and Screechers to light up the sky, for the whole community to gather around Guy Fawkes’ burning embers and to share a toffee apple with the neighbours. Bonfire night is one among many of my favourite events of the year, I just love seeing everybody together, young children’s mittens clutching onto their parent’ coat and the joy of writing your name with a sparkler (something I refuse to grow out of!). In my village we are having our yearly village bonfire, an evening where everyone trudges through knee-high mud wearing their wellies and thermal t-shirts, to watch the firework display whilst eating their ketchup-caked hotdog. Though as cold as it may be I love everything about the evening, from boots to bobble hats, even the annual horse drugging to keep them calm over the sky-lighted hours.

Saturday 10th December at 7.30pm Tickets £7.50 Tel: 01904 490440 Bring your own drinks and supper and join the party The Foresters Folk Group have been playing music in and around York for 40 years having formed in 1971.. The blend of folk, country, humour, monologues (and even popular music) has an appeal to a wide ranging audience. Music influences include the original base of folk and roots music but now with anything that is easy listening and pleases and invites audience participation with words to help - on battered wallpaper drop sheets.

Besides Bonfire Night, November is an important month for other reasons, for Ireland November 1st is the beginning of winter, for other European countries, the 14th of November recognises the snowy season. But I’m sure we all feel the chill in the air as the snow dawns nearer. For the country-loving folk, this is the time to ‘send away’ the ram for spring time lambs. But with the end of the year coming nearer, so does St Nick. Personally I cannot believe how early some shops bring out their fairy baubles, but the atmosphere on a white Christmas morning is well worth the preparation. Besides, the end of the year means roll on January Sales! So pack away your pumpkins and prepare you extra layers. Until next month, 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

he castle, perched high on the cliff top above the city, has been home to some of Scotland’s most famous, and infamous, figures. The infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots, was housed there when he was crowned in the Holy Rood Church as James the Sixth of Scotland, later to follow Elizabeth the First on the throne of England, uniting the two crowns. The church is one of only two surviving buildings in the United Kingdom where a coronation has taken place. Westminster Abbey is the other. From the castle ramparts, visitors can view seven battlefields, all of which played a significant part in Scotland’s history, such as Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn (1314). Below the castle, mediaeval buildings include churches, mansions and public houses. There are special walks designed to ensure visitors don’t miss any of the important sites. The Old Town Walk takes the same route as that covered by kings and commoners alike when moving from the town to the castle. This route was only changed in the 19th century when the city centre was developed. The Black Walk follows the town’s 16th century walls, with purple plaques giving details of the 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Near to the castle is the Old Town Jail, which was once a Victorian reform prison – a place of misery, hardship and cruelty. This is now an interesting and not to be missed tourist attraction. Stirling is also home to many haunted buildings, most notably The Settle Inn, scene of ghostly manifestations. But with so many battles and murders taking place over the centuries, it’s not surprising that the ghosts walk – and you can walk with them on an eerie night tour designed to take in the spectral corners where spirits await. There is even a mystery walk, where amateur sleuths

The National Wallace Monument was erected in his honour. The tower is 220ft high and, from the top of its 246 steps, views of the glorious Stirling countryside and beyond reward those who make the climb. Don’t miss the ruined Cambuskenneth Abbey situated nearby. This was where Robert the Bruce held his Parliament in 1326 and is the burial place of King James III. Christmas ‘Design a Poster’ Competition

C

hristmas may seem like a long time away but York Rotters are encouraging people to start thinking about how to have a green Christmas. York Rotters are launching their annual ‘Christmas Design a Poster’ competition where children in the York area are invited to design a poster to show what festive items can be composted at Christmas time. Catherine Bamford, York Rotters Project Officer commented ‘People often believe that only vegetable and fruit peelings can be composted but there are lots of festive items that can be put into a compost bin. Gift wrap (apart from metallic paper), sellotape, discarded Christmas crackers, envelopes, cardboard, string, tissue paper and burst balloons can all be composted. Composting is a great way to green up your Christmas but preparations should start before you put your peelings in the compost bin. As metallic gift wrap can’t be recycled or composted, if people choose paper based gift wrap and crackers, they will be reducing the amount of rubbish put into their landfill bin’ The competition will be judged in two age groups: under 8 years and 8 to 16 years, one winner will be chosen from each group. Winners will win gift vouchers worth £20 and the winning 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

designs will be made into large posters and displayed across the city as part of the York Rotters Christmas compost campaign. Compost Bins can make an unusual Christmas present for that hard-to-buy for person and will help get rid of the extra waste that is generated at Christmas. To buy a cheap bin, subsidised by the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership, visit www.getcomposting.com or telephone 0844 571 4444 Posters can be drawn, painted, stuck or computer generated but should be submitted on either A4 or A3 paper. The child’s name, address, telephone number, age at 25th November 2010, along with a parents name and signature, should be on the back. Entries should be sent to York Rotters, York Environment Centre, Rawdon Avenue, York, YO10 3ST. All entries should be received by Friday 25th November. All posters entered into the competition will be displayed at the Environment Centre over the Christmas period. Unfortunately we are unable to return any posters. If you want to know more about composting or volunteering for York Rotters please contact Catherine Bamford at York Rotters on 01904 412861 or email rotters@stnicksfields.org.uk.

Fireworks How to keep pets safe on

by Nicky Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets

I

Remember, remember the fifth of November....

50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Night

t’s that time of year again that excites so many of us around the country with the smell of bonfires and the anticipation of all the bangs, whizzes and whooshes that go alongside the bright colours that light up the night sky. But what about the pets in your life, do they enjoy the whole experience quite so much? Few pets seem to relish this time of year, often they don’t seem to notice anything different but for a proportion of our dogs and cats it is a time of stress, anxiety and even, for a small percentage, phobia and total terror. So, what can we do to help our pets through the whole experience, hopefully minimising their stress and encouraging them to view fireworks as something not to be afraid of and definitely not doing anything to compound their fear and make the situation worse next time around. There are a few obvious things like drawing the curtains, keeping cats indoors and making sure the dog has had a good walk while it’s still daylight outside. Animals are best not left in single storey extensions as the acoustics of these magnify the sound and either having the television or music with a regular beat on are both good ways of drowning out as much sound as possible too. Providing a safe place where they can hide and feel safe will help a lot of pets. If they choose to use this refuge then don’t try and force them out of it as this can only add to their stress levels. If these basic ideas aren’t enough there are other options available. Pheromone-based products come in

spray or plug-in diffuser form, one for cats and one for dogs. These mimic the scent their mother gives off when she is feeding her offspring and helps to make animals feel more at ease in their surroundings. However, these products often need to be used in the home for up to 4 weeks in advance to get the full effect. There are also some supplements on the market which can be given on food, they are natural products that aid in calming and can have good results. In extreme cases sedative drugs need to be prescribed for animals that really don’t cope well so make an appointment to discuss things with your vet if you’re concerned. Firework celebrations are often spread over several nights and can last for several hours at a time so it’s important to be prepared if you do have an animal that suffers. It’s not always easy but try to act as naturally as possible when fireworks are going off, your pet will pick up on your mood and so if you are feeling stressed then they will often react to that. Similarly, if you fuss over them too much or punish them for the behaviour they’re exhibiting then they feel that there is a reason to be afraid, whereas if you act as though nothing out of the ordinary is happening then you may find that they are calmer too. Finally, if you have a pet that is really affected by any kind of noise phobia, not just firework-related, then there are desensitisation programs available, these often take the form of a CD that gradually increases the noise levels to help get them used to it. Though not an option for immediate effect, it is something worth thinking about before the next onslaught of firework season. Anway, I’m off to get some cinder toffee in preparation for the big night!
