W
elcome to the November edition...
I know that it is still early to be thinking about Christmas but sympathise with me trying to be festive writing this at the beginning of October! It isn’t even cold yet and still seems like summer. Having said that, it pays to be organised and there are lots of opportunities to do just that this month. Look out for Christmas fairs galore and lots and lots of great independent retailers helping you get ready. I’ve been hearing so much about social media lately: how great it is, how awful it is, how our teenagers are going to be unable to hold conversations face to face, it’s the end of the world etc. etc. I’d like to think that I am taking part in this revolution - the Handy Mag (@Handymag) has 555 followers on twitter and I have daily updates on cupcakes and the weather on the Yorkshire Wolds - but I haven’t really worked out how to use it all properly yet. Should I tweet about my tea? Undoubtedly social media is amazing! It is here to stay and I intend to get to grips with it! We will be tweeting about local events, business news and local groups and will also be updating our Facebook page. As well as settling down with a nice cup of tea to read your Handy Mag this week, please follow us or like us to keep up with what’s happening in the area. With my daughter studying ‘A’ level History this year and the First World War, I have been reminded about Remembrance Day. I somehow associate the day with wars past but it is as much about current war veterans and their families. Wear that poppy with pride this November. A list of local Remembrance Day services and parades is on page 22. Congratulations to Julie Stormont-Dawber for winning the September competition. Until next month…

NOVEMBER’S BIG BANG: FIREWORKS NIGHT This year’s Bonfire Night will see Britain’s population stocking up on pyrotechnics and hoping for a starry night into which they will launch their rockets and colourful array of exploding projectiles. Guy Fawkes’ commemoration by no means holds a monopoly on the format. An increasing number of dates outside the 5th of November fill Britain’s calendar with spectacular displays at many events. People from all backgrounds, old and young, come together to marvel at the displays and join in the chorus of ooohs and aaahs. It’s an age-old, simple pleasure that makes no distinction between culture, politics, or language. Quite simply, fireworks are just fun to watch. BRITAIN’S PYROTECHNIC HISTORY As an English Catholic, Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot of 1605 was born of a desire to rid Parliament of Protestant King James I and replace him with third in line, Princess Elizabeth. Gunpowder was placed in a room (an ‘undercroft’) beneath the House of Lords as part of an audacious plan hatched by Fawkes and his fellow Catholic conspirators. News of the plan, however, was leaked to King James and Fawkes was captured and arrested. After some unsavoury interrogation and torture, Fawkes confessed to the crime and was banished to be hung, drawn and quartered. Not keen on facing the gallows, he leapt from the supporting scaffolding and met his end by way of a broken neck. Thus, the tale of conspiracy from 1605 became folklore in Britain

and spawned generations who collected wood for bonfires and roamed from house-to-house seeking ‘a penny for the guy’, after which the effigy was placed on the blaze to meet its doom. Some of these traditions remain, but the modern commemoration is a more commercial operation with safety and litigation as primary concerns, alongside enjoyment of the events. Notwithstanding this gloomy state of affairs, surfing the Internet reveals some fascinating information on the subject of fireworks as well as the do’s and don’ts of safety. The website Bonfire Night Safety, for example, states that in a recent year there were 990 injuries caused by fireworks in October and November, and alarmingly, that 285 of them were eye injuries. There are also some interesting snippets on the site; prior to 1959, it was illegal not to celebrate bonfire night in the UK and apparently, some fireworks can travel up to speeds of 150 mph. Despite the hazards of pyrotechnics, a few precautions will see you enjoying the action in safety. There is plenty of information online and from local
authorities to make for a safe and enjoyable night, so be sure to seek it out before lighting the touch paper or joining an organised event. THE BUSINESS OF PYROTECHNICS The history of fireworks dates back to China in the 7th century where displays accompanied festivities, a trend that spread to many other cultures around the world. The popularity of these displays created a firework manufacturing industry and the much-respected profession of the pyrotechnician. It seems, however, that the mainstay of the industry is harking back to its Chinese roots as the majority of fireworks are now made in China and imported. The squeeze on materials and labour costs, plus fierce competition in the business, has caused the UK’s industry to downsize and concentrate on specialist markets and displays, rather than manufacture. Our love affair with the spectacle continues. And for Britain, Guy Fawkes Night provides enough history and national enthusiasm to step out into the cold November air to indulge just one more time. ELLA... ON CINEMA “Cinema is truth at 24 frames per second,” says Jean-Luc Godard, director extraordinaire, and of course he’s quite right. There is no story-telling that can really compare to the wonders of the screen, even books, though they allow you to fabricate the story yourself, can only be enjoyed alone. Films however, are a communal learning experience, a showcase of the extent of human imagination. Now that our beautiful long summer evenings are getting shorter and darker by the day, it’s just about the time of year to put away the barbecue, and bring out the DVD player. This month in particular is going to be a fantastic time to do so, thanks to a lengthy list of highly rated films due to come out in November, no sunshine required. Coming out on the 1st, Cutie and the Boxer, a film/documentary following a Japanese couple living in New York, which tells the story of their marriage, their art, and what it means to express your identity. Also on the 1st, Philomena stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, as he -a struggling journalistpicks up the story of the Irish woman’s search for her long-lost son. The journey takes them to the USA, and some long-forgotten secrets are uncovered along the way. Gravity, an exciting prospect for sci-fi and thriller fans, is due to be released on the 8th, with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney portraying astronauts stuck adrift in space after a terrible accident. Apparently it is one of the best space films ever made, and going by its record break in the US box office, I wouldn’t be surprised. Perhaps one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Hunger Games sequel: Catching Fire comes out on 21st of November, with the next chapter in the dramatic dystopian saga. The 29th of November sees Carrie reincarnated. A remake of the 70s film, from the Stephen King novel, the new version has Chloe Grace Moretz as the telekinetic protagonist, and promises horror and carnage. Not to mention great TV series reappearing, such as the Doctor Who 50th anniversary on the 23rd, and the premier of Almost Human. All in all, it seems like the right kind of time to stock up on popcorn and get sitting comfortably outside is overrated. - Ella 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WHAT’S IT WORTH? It’s said that money makes the world go round and it’s certainly provided adequate fodder for fiction writers over the years. Here’s our pick of the best books on bucks…and how to spend them.
Bonfire of the Vanities By Tom Wolfe Here’s written proof that life can turn on a dime. Bond trader Sherman McCoy thinks he has life pretty sussed, with a swanky Park Avenue apartment, trophy wife and even a bit on the side. Then he’s involved in a hit and run and his life starts to come undone. Wolfe’s novel exudes money, and all the excesses of the 1980s come spilling out of the pages.
The Great Gatsby
By F. Scott Fitzgerald The very embodiment of the excesses of the so-called Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby himself is the millionaire Jay Gatsby who resides at West Egg, Long Island. For years he’s been in love with Daisy Buchanan, who now lives across the water at East Egg and remains as elusive and just out of his grasp as ever. Determined to win back Daisy’s affections, Gatsby holds lavish party after lavish party in the hope that someday, she will walk back into his opulent hallway, and his life. This cautionary tale reveals what happens when American Dreams turn out to be anything but, and Gatsby learns, to his detriment, that all that glitters 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
may not be gold.
Money
By Martin Amis Greedy chops personified, John Self loves everything to excess: spending money, sex, alcohol, tobacco, but then, equally, who doesn’t love a genuine glutton for all that they are? A director of TV adverts, with wild spending habits, Self is trying to produce his first major picture and is doing it with his usual excess and aplomb. This is a story of a man who lives without restraints; of excess and exuberance, all done in an incredibly comic way. You will be shocked and appalled, but in a good way.
The Way We Live Now By Anthony Trollope If you thought financial scandal was limited to modern day bankers and politicians then think again. This is Trollope’s great satire of the financial wheeler-dealings of the 1870s. Augustus Melmotte is a financier with a dubious past who relocates to London and sets the city alight with gossip and intrigue. Like Jay Gatsby, he holds lavish parties in order to extract what he wants from people, in this case investors,
and so begins an intricatelywoven tale of greed and dishonesty.
Confessions of a Shopaholic
By Sophie Kinsella You write about solving financial problems for a living, but your own bank account is firmly cemented in the red. Journalist Rebecca Bloomwood is a selfconfessed shopaholic, who becomes increasingly entangled in her own intricate web of credit card debts and unpaid bills, all the while dispensing advice to other poor financial flops. Can she ever see her way clear to a debt-free but romance-full life?
Vanity Fair
By William Makepeace Thackeray Becky Sharp knows what she wants and how to get it. Thackeray’s single-minded heroine has just graduated from Miss Pinkerton’s Academy for Young Ladies and now has her sights set firmly on wealth and worldly possessions. Amelia, her somewhat more loveable and kind- hearted companion, is a bit soppier and only has eyes for her soldier, George who it has to be said, is a bit of a cad and a bounder. Vanity Fair is an epic satire of love, loss, fortunes and fighting, all done with more than a smattering of Regency style.

GW Plumbing was established in 2007 and has grown from a one-man band to a 9 strong team. “We are one of York’s most rapidly expanding, reliable and experienced plumbing firms,” says Graham, owner. “Our success lies within our founding principles”, Graham explains. “We are always on time, always friendly and polite, reliable and trustworthy. We always tidy up after ourselves and are local, so we know our way around. We are competitively priced, focused on customer service and most importantly we are Gas Safe Registered.” Contractors who work on the plumbing and heating in your property without the necessary qualifications and affiliations risk tragic consequences both for themselves and their customers. Leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning are a real risk if gas work is not performed to a high legal standard. Gas pipes capped off with expanding foam, dangerously fitted cracked flues, a gas leak in a new-build property and a fraudulent gas fitter using bogus information to sign off a boiler – all work done by cowboy plumbers and seen in York within the last 2 months by Graham at GW Plumbing. Why the Poppy?
A
t the end of the First World War, in a bleak land of mud, completely devastated by fighting and the death of millions of soldiers, one plant thrived, the poppy. Year after year, as the warm weather arrived, the poppies bloomed and turned the bare ground into a sea of red. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended and civilians wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. Nowadays, we are all familiar with the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and a way to raise funds to support veterans. But how did the iconic flower make the journey from the fields to our lapels? It all began with Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician who fought in Flanders. In May 1915 his friend was killed in action. Looking at the poppies growing alongside his grave moved McCrae to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. The idea to use the poppy as a symbol of remembrance came from an American professor and YWCA worker, Moina Michael, in 1918. She
wrote a poem in reply to McCrae’s called ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ and started to sell silk poppies. The idea was adopted by the American Legion in 1920. In 1921, Anna E Guerin started making artificial poppies in France and gained the support of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of the Royal British Legion. The first poppy appeal was held on Armistice Day 1921. It was hugely popular and, despite a recommended selling price of threepence per poppy, single petals sold for £5. In all, the appeal raised £106,000 – that equates to almost £30 million in today’s money! Did you know that there is also a purple poppy? It commemorates the animals that have been victims of war and raises money for Animal Aid. Give your support and wear your poppy with pride this November.

MOTORING Aston Martin Rapide S
By James Baggott, MD of BlackballMedia.co.uk
THE KNOWELGE
• Model: Aston Martin Rapide S • Price: £165,580 (as tested) • Engine: 6.0-litre, V12, petrol • Power: 550bhp 620NM • Max speed: 190mph • 0-62mph: 4.9 seconds • MPG: 19.9mpg (combined) • Emissions: 332g/km CO2
WHAT IS IT?
Meet Aston Martin’s slightly awkward-looking four-door saloon, but now with added adrenaline. Not that the standard car really needed an additional dose of go-go juice, but that’s never stopped the Gaydon massive from administering aid before. As part of a mid-life refresh the S has more power and even more refinement, and is the only model in the maker’s range that comes with two rear seats.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
An almighty lump, that’s what. The ageing 6.0-litre V12 is still in situ – a last hurrah before AMG work their black magic under the hoods of Britain’s finest – but for now it has even more grunt. Power is up 80bhp to 550bhp and this helps the 60mph dash time tumble under that all-important five second barrier, but only by a tenth of a second. Top speed is a heady 190mph and with those sorts of figures fuel economy and emissions suffer. The former is a rather woeful 19.9mpg and CO2 is puffed out at a rate of 332g/km.
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?
In a word: glorious. The leather is soft, the carpets thick and 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
the wood burnished. Several cows were sacrificed to coat most surfaces inside and the instruments are as beautiful as one of the finest Swiss watches. Standard kit includes Bluetooth, sat nav, front and rear parking sensors (you need them, this thing is Ark Royal long), tracking device and a stunning 1000W Bang & Olufsen stereo. Some of the controls are a little small and fiddly, particularly the buttons in the centre console. Those rear seats have the option of TV screens (£2,495) and you can go mad on the other options too. Even the paint of our test car was an additional £3,495, but it’s worth it for the name alone: Skyfall Silver.
ANY RIVALS?
A few. The biggest is the Porsche Panamera. An ugly car from some angles, stunning from others, it’s a super-sized sports car that’s superb to drive, especially in GTS form. The new Mercedes S-Class will be a potent rival too as will Audi’s luxurious A8. Even BMW’s 7 Series will have a sniff in this category, where price matters far less than the badge that’s on the bonnet.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
Aston Martin’s range, that’s for sure, but this is a GT car to transport you and the family with ease. It’s relaxed and sedate when you want it to be, but can still pick up its skirt and go when you put your foot down. As the revs rise the butterflies in the exhaust containing the cacophony of noise open, releasing a guttural V12 groan. The rear seats are comfy too, even for adults, but that said, headroom can be a little cramped.
OUR VERDICT
The Aston Martin Rapide S is a stunning way to travel. It’s luxurious, looks sharp and is caked in cool. You can’t drive an Aston anywhere without gaining nods of appreciation and that very rarely happens in ostentatious equivalents from the likes of Ferrari or Lamborghini. There’s a certain respect for Aston Martin, and I like that. The Rapide S is a big car – and it feels it on the road – and that engine really is starting to feel dated in terms of economy, but the power is impressive and if you need those extra rear seats it’s worth considering… if you have the cash, of course.

AND TO THE TAX MAN I BEQUEATH…
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
O
ne of the hardest jobs I have to do is to persuade people to get rid of their money. “Hang on a minute”, I hear you say, “you’re a financial planner, you’re supposed to help people accumulate money not get rid of it.” And to some extent that’s true. There are two sets of people we help – those trying to accumulate money for the future, say retirement. And those who have already accumulated their money and now have a problem they’re not even aware of – the prospect of losing it all in death taxes or paying for elderly care.
More than £4 billion pounds is collected every year by the Inland Revenue in death tax – Inheritance Tax as it’s currently known. Much of that is entirely avoidable.
The irony is that those people who have accumulated money are those that have been prudent and saved for a rainy day. Let’s face it – the “ipod - want it all and want it now – generation” are unlikely to accumulate any wealth at all. But what the savers don’t recognise is that the rainy day is now, and if they’re not careful the money they’ve saved all their lives will end up down the pan.
Another reason is that people think that they’re going to spend the money at some point. That they’re too young to be thinking about death taxes. That they’ll deal with this later when it’s “nearer the time.”

The reason more action isn’t taken is, I think, threefold. One is that people are genuinely unaware they have a problem. They believe that death taxes only affect the rich. But the limit above which you will pay Inheritance Tax is only £325,000. Many houses are worth more than that without counting savings etc.
But the most common reason is that people think they’re immortal. They think they’re going to last forever. But of course they don’t. And most of them would turn in their grave when a bigger chunk of their money ends up with Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise than with their own children. Yet the steps you need to take to prevent this are relatively straight forward. But most take time to become effective. So you have to take action now and not wait until “nearer the time”. Because that time all too often sneaks up on you when you’re not looking. And then it’s too late. The independent consumer association “Which” produces a useful book on Inheritance Tax planning – “The Which? Guide to Inheriting & Giving” and we’ve got copies to give away. With today’s stressful lifestyles more and more people present to healthcare professionals with problems related to tooth clenching/grinding. Some symptoms can be very painful and debilitating for the patient therefore their correct diagnosis and management is very important. HOW CAN I TELL IF I DO IT? Most people are unaware of their habit as they may do it whilst asleep or when concentrating on everyday tasks.
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
You may suffer recurrent or chronic headaches especially when waking, however pain can present in the jaw, sinus, behind the eyes and also the neck and shoulders. The jaw joint, the TMJ, may click, grind ,be difficult to open and close and also be painful. Teeth may fracture repeatedly or become worn, they may also loosen or show localised gum shrinkage and be very sensitive or even develop toothache. You may notice the edges of your tongue are bumpy (crenelated). People who have lost some or all of their back teeth may be more prone due to their bites being unbalanced.

HOW CAN IT BE TREATED? Your dentist will make a provisional diagnosis, however they may refer you for a second opinion in more complicated cases. Treatment include the provision of tailor made splints (hard or soft), jaw exercises, modifying the way teeth bite together or more advanced forms of treatment depending on each individual case. SHORT STORY
THE AMAZING MISTER MITTENS by Jackie Brewster
Toby Daniels thought it was extremely unfair that he had to go next door and feed Mrs Withershaw’s cat. His neighbour would be in hospital for a whole week having a hip replacement. The boring chore would make him late home from school, and that meant ten minutes less computer game playing while his Mother made dinner. It simply was asking too much. He’d never paid much attention to Mrs Withershaw’s pet before. It had always seemed like the usual sort of cat, but by the third day of caring for it Toby wasn’t so sure. Yesterday he had left a dirty bowl next to the sink and today when he let himself in, the bowl had been washed and placed on the draining board. He watched as Mister Mittens hungrily ate his dinner. When he was sure the cat had finished Toby gently picked him up and placed him on the counter. “Show me how you turned on the tap, Mister Mittens,” Toby whispered in the cat’s ear. Mister Mittens began licking his paws enigmatically, clearly in no mood for performing. This was not the first time something unusual had happened. On the first day, in his rush to get home, Toby had knocked over a pile of newspapers, causing them to cascade across the kitchen floor. When he returned the next day Mister Mitten had piled the newspapers up neatly again. In fact as Toby walked in, the cat was curled up asleep on top of them. Toby wondered if all cats were as amazing as Mister Mittens, or whether this was a very special cat. He decided to ask his Mother. Mrs Daniels seemed genuinely surprised about how clever Mister Mittens was. “What a very considerate cat,” she agreed.
continued into the evening. Mrs Daniels noticed that Toby kept glancing nervously out of the living room window. “Something wrong Toby dear?” she asked finally. “I’m worried about next door,” Toby said. “I noticed a leak in Mrs Withershaw’s back porch, and if this rain carries on she’s going to have a big puddle there when she gets home. She could slip over and ruin that brand new hip.” “Oh dear.” Mrs Daniels pretended to read her magazine while watching her son out of the corner of her eye. “What is there to be done about it?” It amazed and amused her that Toby still hadn’t realised that she had been going round to Mrs Withershaw’s every morning to tidy up the mess he’d made. She was seeing another side to Toby emerging as he cared for that old cat, so she was more than happy for Mister Mittens to take all the credit. Toby made up his mind and went into the hall for his coat.
Over the following days Mister Mittens, while being left home alone, somehow put the empty tins of cat food into the recycling, swept up scattered cat litter and mopped up a puddle of milk next to the fridge. Toby knew that the milk had been mopped, not licked up, because the mop and bucket had moved, and the mop was damp.
“I’m going back there now to put a bucket under it,” he said decisively.
It began to rain the day before Mrs Withershaw was due to come home from hospital, and the rain
“Honestly Mum!” Toby sighed, zipping up his coat. “You can’t expect a cat to think of everything.”
30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
“That’s very thoughtful of you,” Mrs Daniels said, delighted that her son was finally learning to be considerate. Then, unable to resist, she added, “But won’t Mister Mittens do it?”

THE RISE OF THE
ALL INCLUSIVE HOLIDAY
I
t’s something we all take for granted today – being able to travel abroad on holiday and have everything available for all the family. From the babysitting services to the dedicated children’s swimming pools and clubs, all giving the younger members of the family hours upon hours worth of attractions and distractions to entertain them for the fortnights holiday away… It hasn’t always been this way, so where did it all begin and where did the All Inclusive concept come from? Back in the heady days of the 1960’s, our European counterparts across the Channel were living it up on what was then the World’s first ever All Inclusive concept, the brainchild of Club Mediteranee or what we now know today as simply Club Med. Guests would turn up in the resorts and be given strings of beads which they would
32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
wear and exchange in resort for drinks, food and activities – the whole idea being that no money changed hands while you were on your holiday – and the first All Inclusive style holiday was born. While the parents were having a great time enjoying all the hotels had to offer, Club Med turned their thinking to the children and how to keep them occupied during the days and nights so that they too could have as good a time as their parents .In 1967 the worlds first resort based Children’s Clubs were created where parents could leave their children supervised for the main parts of the day and evening and activities were created to keep all ages occupied! Since then there have been many incarnations of All Inclusive spring up, with hoteliers and travel companies all around the world getting on board with what is fast becoming the norm for holidays
on the beach. The standards and the inclusions vary vastly from one to another and it’s sometimes difficult to know where to choose – the skills of locals travel agents can definitely help narrow the options and give you the best value and quality for your budget. There is also the question of the local economy – how have the all inclusive resorts affected trade? Well for those companies operating well managed resorts, the focus is on utilising local business for supply of goods as well as the employing the available workforce. These resorts can become hubs for the local community – major employers as well as customers providing much needed sustainability for the area. Club Med and others fall into this category. It’s all about knowing the right ones to choose. Never a truer word was spoken with the phrase “You get what you pay for”… if it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is! Ask a travel expert for advice, check the resort reviews with them online and book knowing you have secured the best quality deal with the security of financial protection and a reputable operator. And most importantly, make time to visit the local shops and markets. Although everything is covered in your hotel, you never know what local delights you might eat, drink or buy when you step out and enjoy the flavours of the country you have visited – and the locals will appreciate it too!

Learn How to Make Your Business Work HARD So That YOU Don’t Have to….. I often talk in my workshops about the importance of time management — how everyone has the same amount of time every day, just 24 hours. What you get out of it depends on how you use it. I find Brian Tracy very inspiring in his book “Eat That Frog”. He recommends starting the day by dealing with the worst and the most important thing that you need to do i.e. the “Frog”. The key thing to bear in mind is, if you have to eat a frog, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it too long. The key to high performance is to plan every day in advance the night before, identifying and setting your priorities. Ask yourself, “If I can only complete one task on this list before I leave today, which one would it be?” Whatever that is, becomes your “Frog”. The next morning you need to discipline yourself to start in on that task, and deal only with that until it is complete. If you can develop that habit, you can double and triple your productivity, you’ll take full control of your life, you will eventually become wealthy, and the personal feeling of pride, accomplishment, discipline and achievement you get will be absolutely extraordinary. It is one of the most important of all lessons to learn, and one of the hardest things to implement. Once you’ve got the hang of this then it’s time to get your employees following your lead. COOKING TRAVEL
By Solange Hando
Twice Baked Cheese Souffle Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes
TIP To prepare ahead, leave the soufflés to cool after the initial baking, then turn them out into the baking dish and cover with cling film. Chill in the fridge for a few hours or overnight and top with the cheese and bake for the second time just before serving. Melt the butter in a saucepan then stir in the 1. flour and mix with a wooden spoon to make
If the thought of baking a fragile cheese soufflé for a special dinner seems a little too ambitious, then think again. Baked once in advance then baked again just before serving, these delicious individual soufflés work every time.
INGREDIENTS • 40g butter, plus extra for greasing • 40g plain flour • 225ml milk, warmed • 4 large eggs, separated • 3 tbsp fresh chopped parsley • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 75g Stilton cheese, crumbled • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 150ml double cream • Green salad, to serve • Cayenne pepper, to sprinkle (optional)

a smooth paste. Cook over a low heat for 1 minute. Gradually whisk the milk a little at a time. Once all the milk has been added, cook over a low heat for a further 2-3 minutes, whisking continuously, until you have a smooth and thick sauce. Remove from the heat and cool for 5 minutes.
in the egg yolks, parsley and two-thirds 2. ofBeat the Cheddar and Stilton. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Butter four large ramekin dishes and line the bases with circles of baking parchment.
Place the egg whites in a clean, grease-free 3. bowl and whisk until stiff. Beat one spoonful
of the egg whites into the cheese sauce to loosen it slightly then gently fold the sauce into the remaining egg whites. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared dishes.
Place the dishes in a roasting tin and pour in 4. boiling water to come halfway up the sides
of the dishes. Bake for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden. Transfer the dishes to a cooling rack (the soufflés will sink a little but don’t worry). Increase the oven temperature to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6.
Turn the soufflés out into a shallow baking dish 5. and remove the lining papers. Sprinkle over
the remaining cheese and return to the oven for 15-20 minutes until piping hot and puffy. Spoon the cream over the top and bake for a further 2-3 minutes until heated through. Serve immediately with salad, sprinkled lightly with cayenne pepper, if liked.

big owls by torchlight. The sight of a Great Grey Owl appearing from the gloom to silently land on a gently lit perch is one you are unlikely to forget. Whilst getting the owls practiced for the Owl Evenings we are also kept busy with the endless job of leaf raking. We are set on a 10 acre site within an area of veteran oak trees. The number of leaves that fall off these guys has to be seen to be believed! All our 40 aviaries are fully roofed so our birds remain warm and dry in the chilly Yorkshire winters.
I
t has been an eventful and challenging year. We first opened to the public on 23rd March and we don’t really seem to have stopped since then! The start of the year saw a fledgling (no pun intended!) team of flying birds come on in leaps and bounds. We have lost count of the number stoops, or dives, from 1000ft we have seen from Lora and Yarara, two of our Lanner Falcons; stoops like these are truly one of the wonders of nature. The nice weather this summer has been a great help; we have had some wonderful audiences for our flying demonstrations. September saw the arrival of some young birds bred at our sister centre in Gloucestershire. Two young Lanner Falcons, a stunning Steppe Eagle and the most delightful young Burrowing Owl are all making their debuts on the flying team. As the leaves fall off the trees and the nights draw in we are busy preparing for our Winter Owl Evenings. Starting at 7pm pre-booked visitors will be welcomed with a glass of mulled wine before heading off for a tour of the owl aviaries by torchlight. The owls are always some of our most popular residents, but you only really get to appreciate them when you go into their world; the darkness. We will fly some of our tiny owls in Christmas Tree Cottage, lit by candles and the lights from a couple of Christmas trees; this is going to be magical. A warming supper follows and then on to the main event. We head out to the flying ground to fly the

young birds will be trained and flown right through the winter. We stay open until Christmas Eve and reopen on 1st February. Hopefully some of our breeding birds will have laid eggs by the time we reopen. We are open 7 days a week until Christmas Eve and we reopen on 1st February 2014. We fly the birds three times a day. GARDENING GROUND COVER
by Pippa Greenwood Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about groundcover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start?
The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, some food and water in drier weather. It has a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the groundcover planting, the better the effect.
Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. Make sure you invest a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too.

YORK • NOVEMBER 2013 • ISSUE 96 If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Make sure the plants are kept just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as groundcover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting makes a wonderful groundcover planting and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your leafy planting will look even better.
If you want a reasonable effect all year around, then select at least some of the plants you use from the evergreens. These may lose their leaves, but they do so gradually so you’ll never be left with totally bare soil. EASY, QUICK COSTINGS FOR YOUR ELECTRICAL WORK
F
orward thinking local electrician, Chris Judge of Judge Electrical Ltd, has developed a new app for his business which means customers will be able to get a quick estimate for their electrical work. The app, available on both apple and android systems, has a ‘quick quote’ section. If the price is suitable, a site visit can then be arranged to discuss the work further. “We believe we are offering a unique service in York,” says Chris, “It will allow people to get estimates for work without any pressure and we aim to get quotes out on the same working day (as long as we received enquiries before 5pm).” The app will also give customers a chance to find out about Judge Electrical, advice about electrical issues and take up any special offers. Chris says, “We are always looking for ways we can improve on our service and we believe that the app will really help us do this.”

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF ALFIE PART 4 AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF A DAY IN PRACTICE.
ALFIE GOES ON HOLIDAY Today I don’t like Phil! It all began a week ago when Phil announced excitedly that he had booked to go camping in France. I did not share in his enthusiasm, as I knew this meant I would be spending the week abandoned in the kennels or ‘doggy holidays’ as Phil referred to it! Little did he know it was far from a holiday for me being cooped up all day with the other miserable hounds. On Phil’s return, I would be expected to appear all excited to see him and share in his happiness. He would not even notice the trauma I had endured or the fact that I could do with a holiday! This time though, Phil explained I would be coming with him. I was so excited as I had never been abroad before and judging by Phil’s mood and suntan when he returned I had always thought ‘holiday’ was a place I might like to visit. Besides being anywhere with Phil was going to be better than going to kennels! However, I did not know that to partake in Phil’s French adventure I would need to visit the VET. As a PATIENT not an observer! Now, I love going to work with Phil, to see my friends and be a part of the action from the safety of Phil’s desk, but I had a rather unpleasant discovery whilst exploring recently, about the procedures that go on within the vets. I tried to explain to Phil, that actually, I would like to go on ‘doggy holidays’ after all. It wasn’t all bad. Actually I quite enjoyed it. I wagged my tail to show my 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
enthusiasm, as he didn’t seem to understand me. He mistook this as me looking forward to France and enduring what ever was necessary to get there. ‘Good dog’ he said patting my head. I groaned and lay down looking up at him with heavy eyes. I loved Phil but sometimes he was just so STUPID. We arrived at the vets and poor unsuspecting me, trotted in happily behind Phil, unaware of the things to be bestowed on me. I started to realise that it was not going to be a normal day when instead of turning left to the vets office we turned right, to the consulting room. I knew I was in trouble when Phil closed the door behind us and turned to me with what he obviously thought was a reassuring face. I knew if he was making ‘that’ face at me, then something most unpleasant was about to happen. Apparently, so Phil was telling me, I needed a pet passport to travel within the EU and to get one, I needed to have a Rabies Vaccination, a microchip and receive a tapeworm treatment. I was mortified. Did I look like the kind of dog to have rabies or tapeworm? Phil then said I might as well have a flea treatment for good measure. Luckily I already had a microchip. Phil said I had had it done when I was castrated. I did not know what that word meant but it sounded very important and made me feel very manly! Phil was still talking despite me pulling my ‘I’m not listening face.’ ‘Right Alfie this rabies vaccination needs to be given 21 days before we travel so you need it now’ he bent down and tickled my ears, then he stuck the vaccination into my scruff. He gave me a handful of biscuits and told me I could have my flea and tapeworm treatment closer to the time of our holiday. Still chance to hide before then I thought whilst making a hasty retreat to his desk. What I didn’t know was I would have to have another tapeworm treatment in France before I was allowed back into the country, but that is another story. I have now decided to teach Phil a lesson and will ignore him until teatime! For more information on taking your pets abroad please speak to your Veterinary Surgeon. YOUR CAT DURING FIREWORK SEASON
Y
ork Cats Protection has issued advice to help keep pet cats safe during the fireworks season. Whilst the celebrations can be great fun for people, cats can be left stressed out, confused or injured by fireworks. Centre Manager James Hodgkison said: “Apart from the obvious physical damage suffered through accidental contact with fireworks, cats can be badly affected by fireworks noise and lights. Possible behavioural problems as a result of fear and stress could include house soiling or excessive grooming, whilst there is also the danger of a pet cat running away and potentially not returning home.” A few simple precautions can help owners to keep their cat out of harm’s way: • Keep your cat in after dark and ensure access to a litter tray • Try to reduce outside noise by keeping windows shut and curtains drawn. Playing soothing music or having
the TV on may also help. Try not to reinforce fearful behaviour by soothing and reassuring a cat that is looking anxious • While cats like to be settled in a cosy, familiar territory such as a comfy bed or favourite chair, when feeling scared they need safe places to hide. Ensure they can exhibit this natural behaviour by providing access to a hiding place, such as under the bed, an igloo-style cat bed or something simple like a cardboard box • Make sure all doors and windows are securely closed to prevent your cat from escaping the home • A Pheromone plug-in diffuser such as Feliway® can be used to decrease anxiety and spraying and can have a beneficial effect in calming a cat during fireworks. However, you must start using it a couple of weeks before 5 November to maximise the benefit. It should be sited in the room in which your cat chooses to rest. Please speak to your vet for more information For further information, please contact York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 51
A BETTER LIFE SHEDDING A TEAR by Derek Thompson
It looked pretty, but there was more plant than building!
Summerhouse still sounded so bright and optimistic, even this late in the year, despite its current appearance. The roof had become open plan in places and the Russian Vine (not for nothing is it sometimes known as mile-a-minute) had infiltrated and exploited the guttering, several joints and three places along one side panel. So, all things considered, it was time to make a difficult decision. Or rather, it was time for Anne to make a difficult decision. Demolition was a straightforward affair, once I’d taken on board Anne’s advice not to stand in the middle of it and pull. Nothing salvageable was wasted. The doors went to a neighbour to become elongated cold frames; likewise the bigger windows. We kept the smaller ones to bring on beans and butternut squash plants in the future. Plus, there was enough kindling - or rather, there will be - to fill our wood store. The next stage in my summerhouse grieving process occurred when Anne took me shed shopping, since we

It’s funny how attached you can become to inanimate objects. It was only a summerhouse, after all - a glorified, double-doored, glass-fronted shed. And in its time it has mainly housed folding chairs, the lawnmower, chicken bedding and the cat. Even so, I was sorry to be parting company with it. clearly didn’t need another summerhouse and our actual shed was also on its last legs. When you run out of spaces on the doors to fit replacement hinges, it’s time to call it a day.
up off the floor). By the time I returned home, all I needed to do was position some plastic sheeting, so that the cat didn’t feel tempted to leave an organic time capsule in the sand.
I wandered around the shed yard, surly and unimpressed, like a schoolboy having to buy new shoes for next term. And then I saw it, framed in golden sunlight: a wonder shed. With glass along one side to let in light for propagation and so that we can watch the birds, and enough space for my tools, my bike and the cat, it ticked all the boxes. Delivery was assured in four weeks’ time and no money down - an all-round winner.
The shed people delivered on time and put the shed up on site. The block work was, thanks to my non-involvement, perfect. Even the cat flap seemed to meet with Porsha’s approval. She is a pre-named, rescue cat, so I take no responsibility.
However, now that we’d prepared the ground, it was time to really prepare the ground by levelling it and adding a layer of sand. As the shed needs to sit on blocks and these have to be aligned and spaced perfectly, Anne waited until I’d gone out to work. A neighbour popped over to help; the same one who corrected my comedy coat rack (now you see it, now you pick it - and a pile of coats -
In the evening, a deputation of neighbours came up to take a look around the shed (with torches). Like I say, it’s a small village and not much happens here. One person asked, with genuine concern, if we planned to rent it out to holidaymakers. I quickly shed some light on the matter. Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country.
