W

elcome to the October edition.

As I write the summer is coming to an end and we are back to school term time. It was lovely having a month without a magazine to print and not being a slave to the computer, although I’m quite looking forward to feeling more organised and back in a routine – my two children are probably not feeling the same way! There is so much to enjoy in October this year. Enjoy beautiful autumnal walks at pumpkin festivals and fungal forays. Or get your glad rags on to help raise funds for the Smiley Riley Fund at the Silver Ribbon Ball or York Rocks Against Cancer. These events alongside many others on our ‘what’s on’ pages will make for a great October.

www.thehandymag.co.uk | @Handymag Publisher: Moonriver Publishing Ltd Editor: Marianne Long Address: 5a Market Street, Malton YO17 7LY Tel: 01653 690859 Email: marianne@thehandymag.co.uk Community: nicky@thehandymag.co.uk

And enjoy it while it lasts as when the clocks go back on the 26th we will be in the run up to winter, cold weather and I won’t even mention the ‘C’ word yet! Remember to be prepared with boilers serviced, chimneys swept and logs and coal in the shed ready. We have lots of local businesses in the Handy Mag this month who are ready to help. If you live in the Haxby and Wigginton area, make sure you vote for the Churchfields ‘Play for All’ Project for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund (page 32). A group of volunteers are helping to make the play area a much better place and need to raise £66,000 to improve access and equipment. Well done to Mrs Carty of Strensall for winning the Aug/Sept competition. Until next month…

Marianne

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE

60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.

2. SHOP AROUND

You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS

By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.

8. PROTECT YOUR TANK

As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.

3. GRAB A GADGET

Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.

4. ADD AN ADDITIVE

As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.

5. BOOK A SERVICE

The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.

6. DIAL IT DOWN

It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%! 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Looking to find some extra space in your home without spending a fortune this winter?

I

f you have a conservatory, you will know that you can’t use it comfortably for many months of the year - it’s the room at the end of the house that no-one really wants to go in. It’s usually stifling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. You might have tried thermal blinds, and there are roof replacement companies who will fit a completely new roof on your conservatory, but this can cost thousands of pounds and often requires planning permission. For an elegant, cost-effective solution that really works, you need to have a chat with local Yorkshire company, Inceil. Their expert team will fit an insulated ceiling to your conservatory in 1 or 2 days which will completely transform it. An insulated ceiling from Inceil will save up to 80% of the heat that is lost through the roof in the winter, and maintain a better temperature

throughout the year. You don’t lose head-height as they follow the existing roof-line and it’s so much nicer to look up to a smooth plastered ceiling rather than a plastic roof covered in algae and bird droppings! If you want to find out more, you can watch a video on www.inceil.co.uk or call York 01904 891936 to arrange a free survey and quote.

Now what will you do with that extra usable space!

Is your conservatory too HOT in the summer and too COLD in the winter? There is a solution…

GOVERNMENT ATTACKS PENSIONERS. AGAIN.

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

T

he most radical changes to pensions in almost a hundred years were announced in the Chancellor’s 2014 Budget. Almost overnight, “vulnerable pensioners” have become “empowered investors” who will be allowed to access their entire pension fund and use it as they wish. In the olden days, restrictions applied on how much of your pension pot could be taken, in exchange for the valuable tax relief you’d have enjoyed as you saved up. None of that nonsense in future. In this new golden age you can have the lot. 25% of it will be tax-free, as it is now, but the balance will be taxed (at up to 45%.)

The more cynical amongst us might see this as a barely veiled attempt by the Government to get their hands on your taxable pension quicker than if they had to wait your entire lifetime to get it. A bird in the hand and all that. Anyway, the consultation on the new pension flexibility goes on. And we are a little closer to knowing what the new regime is going to look like. Worryingly, research is already showing that a significant number of pensioners are intending to take out their entire pension fund and put it in the bank. Proof, if it were needed, that consumers are completely befuddled by the tax consequences of doing so. Investments in a pension fund grow virtually tax free. But if you take it all out, you’ll be taxed on everything above 25% – and that tax could be as high as 45% (depending on your other income). And then when you put it on the bank you’ll be taxed again. And if you’re subject to Inheritance Tax, it could be taxed again when you die. It’s just bonkers.

The good news is that the Government is intending to provide impartial financial guidance by independent bodies to everyone approaching retirement. The bad news is that it looks like that guidance is going to be delivered by the Money Advice Service – the very same organisation Treasury Select Committee, Andrew Tyrie, expressed “serious concerns” about, and Money Savings Expert Martin Lewis described as “an atrocious waste of millions of pounds of public funds.” Another glaring example of your incompetent Government at work. HMRC estimates the extra tax it will collect as a result of pensioners moving their tax free pensions into taxable savings at £4 billion by 2020. It’s just as well the Government decided that yesterdays’ “vulnerable pensioners” became todays’ “empowered investors”, otherwise this would look like daylight robbery.

Make your home BurglarProof with new app Detective Chief Inspector Paul Sweeting, said: “This app is a great way for people to ensure that their homes are as secure as possible. “I urge people to download the app and take the security survey, to help secure their homes from thieves.” To access the app, visit the NYP App Store at www.northyorkshire.police.uk/appstore or visit burglarproof.nyp.mobi from any smartphone or tablet.

N

orth Yorkshire Police has launched an on-line app to help you make sure you don’t become the victim of burglars.

BurglarProof is a quick and easy step-by-step guide to help you assess your home’s security. A quarter of all burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves taking advantage of an unlocked door or window. Homes that don’t have basic security devices, such as window locks and sturdy door locks, are far more likely to be broken into. BurglarProof features: • a comprehensive home security selfassessment tool • a holiday checklist to give you peace of mind when you’re away from home • video tips from North Yorkshire Police officers • in-depth guides giving you professional, detailed advice on every aspect of home security

North Yorkshire Police are always looking to improve the way that they are using technology and there have been a number of improvements in the last few years, with this Burglarproof app just the latest one. It is now easier to speak to your local officer in person if you know their name or collar number. Simply dial 101, choose option 2 and then say either their name or collar number when prompted and you will be put straight through to their personal radio or the Officers voicemail if they are not available. If you are unsure who your local Officer is the members of the local Police teams are listed on the North Yorkshire Police website. Twitter has become more and more popular and the Police are also using it as a way to pass information to the public. You can follow us at @ SNAYORKNORTH , we regularly tweet crime prevention advice, appeals for witnesses to incidents, descriptions of persons that are missing that we would like to locate and details of upcoming Community Events that we will be attending. CHURCHFIELD ‘PLAY FOR ALL’ PROJECT Most of you that live in Wigginton and Haxby will have used and enjoyed Churchfields play area since it opened in 1991. But time is catching up with Churchfields and some items of equipment are now on their last legs! The committee responsible for Churchfields have launched an ambitious scheme to replace 3 key pieces with up to date, exciting and challenging apparatus. After much research and investigation it was decided to make our playground one that can be enjoyed by all.

EBOR MORRIS REUNION

One problem to be solved was access. At present people wishing to use the younger children’s area have to cross a large expanse of grass which can be a problem for wheelchair users and buggies, so a permanent pathway is to be laid. In the younger children’s area, we hope to provide a multipurpose Tower System that has been especially adapted for use by both able-bodied and disabled children. More seating for families is also planned. And in the older children’s area a Dragon Swing and a Climbing System will be installed.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Their shutters are also available in a selection of woods and 117 painted or stained colours and finishes. Shutters help keep a house cool in the summer, and cosy in the winter. THE 12TH ROTARY DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE TOOK PLACE ON SUNDAY 13TH JULY 2014

A

s the rain poured down, 34 teams once again bravely battled it out on the Ouse, between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge in the hope of becoming this year’s winners of the Challenge Trophy and other prestigious awards, including the fastest Charity Team, fastest Armed Services Team and of course the Best Dressed Team. Despite the wet start it turned out to be another fantastic day of racing as the river water levels

were actually lower than normal and the lack of current meant that the times were a bit slower but that made the races more exciting! The grand final of the six fastest teams was a nail biting affair with the GROWLERS (Ged Bell the Dringthorpe Butchers) inching ahead of the SHEPHERD SLAYERS to win the race in 1 min 18.02 seconds. The competition for the best dressed team, as always, produced some very colourful and ingenious costumes with the Lord Mayor of York declaring YORK COLLEGE CREW, who were dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland, as the winners!

York Rotary would like to thank everyone who took part on the day and to all who came and supported the event. Over £60,000 was raised for selected charities and the Rotary’s nominated charity this year, The Jack Raine Foundation. The York Dragon Boat Challenge has been held annually since 2003 and during that time has raised close to £800,000 for a whole host of worthwhile charities.

Plans for next year’s event on 12 July 2015 have already begun! More information about the event and the Charities involved can be found on www.yorkrotary.co.uk

From Italy with love... The story of our vests

B

ack in the late 90s, Bella di Notte founder Susan Johnson headed to Italy looking for romance. On a cold November day in Umbria she was seduced, not by the man of her dreams, but by a vest! She fell head over heels in love with the slinky, seam free vests she discovered in an Italian market. They were made from the softest merino wool and silk adorned with guipure lace – a gorgeous alternative to the traditional thermals she knew back home in Yorkshire. “I couldn’t believe how soft they were, I used to wait longingly in front of the washing machine until the moment I could wear it again.” Susan decided to turn her passion for Italian vests into a business. Her aim was to give thermals the look and feel of lingerie with expert fitting and exquisite quality natural fibres. She managed to get

a small start-up loan for £2500 from the Prince’s Trust and took a risk spending it all on vest stock. “It was tough in the early days, no one in Italy would deal with me because I was young and inexperienced.” Each knock on the door to potential new suppliers was met with a setback but Susan was tenacious. She finally found a small family firm to make her designs and her business started to take off. That first winter she sold all her vests to new customers who shared her passion so much that sales doubled each year. So Bella di Notte was born with the idea that thermals can be sexy, warm and fit comfortably. Susan didn’t stop there. Bella di Notte now has over 50,000 customers and has become a fit specialist offering a huge range of bras in AA to I cup, swimwear, nightwear and clothing. BACK TO THE FUTURE ‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past’ wrote George Orwell in his classic dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty Four. Gone are the images of hover boards and self-adjusting clothing, and in come repeated ideas that the future could be anything but rosy for the human race. The future may not be fantastic, but the fiction certainly is.

Divergent

Veronica Roth Life is generally considered to be confusing enough for teenagers, but in Veronica Roth’s vision of the future, society has become fragmented into five factions of virtue, and all sixteen year olds must choose that which they want to devote their lives to preserving. It’s ideal reading for anyone who’s stressing over which university to go to. After reading Divergent, it’ll be a doddle.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Philip K Dick If the plot starts to feel vaguely familiar, it’s because Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner was based on Dick’s novel. Bounty hunter Rick Deckard is preying on, and ‘retiring’ androids that have short but murderous lifespans, in order to pay his own bills and keep his depressed wife buoyant. In a parallel life, John Isidore is trying to conserve and protect the androids. The novel asks all kinds of questions about human emotions and, most importantly perhaps, about empathy. It’s an amazing and intriguing thriller.

Uglies

Scott Westerfeld Ever thought how much easier your life would be, if you had been born beautiful? In Tally’s world, everyone gets the chance to experience outer beauty- they just need to turn sixteen. The ‘Pretties’ live in a paradise of halcyon days and all the ‘Uglies’ can do is stay in the shadows and wait. But Tally’s friend Shay isn’t so convinced that pretty is the way to go, and she’s found a way out. So the authorities issue Tally with an ultimatum: find Shay and turn her in, or Tally will never turn ‘pretty’ herself.

Nineteen Eighty-Four

George Orwell Long before Davina McCall blasted onto our screens, George Orwell was writing his dystopian classic about Big Brother and Room 101. Written in the past (1949) about the future (1984), that’s now being read in the present (2014, in case you’re not sure!) has actually resulted in the creation of a timeless novel. The fear factor associated with the Ministry of Truth still reigns supreme and the fact that it was supposed to be a commentary on communism doesn’t seem to have dated it one bit. Freedom is life, and Winston Smith is determined that the Ministry won’t determine his future.

Brave New World

Aldous Huxley In Huxley’s vision of the future, everyone’s free to take recreational drugs and be as promiscuous as they like. The World Controllers have created the ideal living situation but, true to form, there’s always one who isn’t happy. Bernard Marx is searching for imperfections, unconvinced that this contrived society is really making people as happy as they appear. A future story that makes us question the present is always a goodie and shows us why this novel has stood the test of time. 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ELLA... ON DRIVERLESS CARS 10 years ago, the idea of a car that could drive itself existed only in science fiction, yet allegedly autonomous vehicles will be allowed onto UK streets by January. For many people, myself included, it sounds awesome. With your own electrical chauffeur, you could just pick a destination, and sit back and relax. There’d be less stress, less responsibility and, theoretically, less crashes. This is the kind of futuristic stuff that gets people excited. Others understandably find the idea not quite as relaxing. Handing your safety over to a machine is an unnerving prospect for those who aren’t completely happy with relying on technology. Not to mention those who enjoy driving anyway, and the fact that many believe themselves to be “one of the better drivers”. Many would see no need to own a driverless car, regardless of the fact that it could be much safer than a person. The concept does throw up a lot of scary questions though. If everyone had driverless cars, any accidents or collisions would no longer be the fault of the driver, but the car itself, and I suppose by extension the people who programmed it. Would you feel differently if someone you knew was involved in a crash with a driverless car, compared to if a human made the same mistake? On the subject of programming – how would the car solve a moral or ethical dilemma? Let’s say you’re in your driverless car, and you’re approaching a tunnel. Suddenly, a child runs across the tunnel’s mouth. Your car has two options: Hit the child, likely killing them, or swerve to miss the child, hitting the tunnel wall and likely killing you, and maybe even your passengers. With a problem like this, there is no real right answer – and yet someone would have to programme the car’s decision. What happens then, and who, if anyone, would be to blame? This is all beginning to sound like an Isaac Asimov novel, but the future is fast approaching. Within most of our lifetimes, these kinds of questions will have to be more than just thought experiments. Although it’s kind of cool, it’s also kind of terrifying. Ella 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BENEFITS AND RISKS INVOLVED IN FEEDING RAW DIETS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets In today’s world we have a multitude of different diets, all claiming various health benefits. The same can be said for dogs. There is an increasing number of people who wish to avoid commercially prepared diets and instead feed their dogs raw food diets also known as BARF (Bones and Raw Food). Raw food diets are gaining popularity and are based on what dogs ate before they became domesticated. They typically consist of muscle and meat, bones, organ meats, raw eggs, vegetables and some dairy. Followers of the BARF diet report various benefits including shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth and better breath, higher energy levels and smaller stools. However choosing to feed a raw diet does not come without risks. There is a threat to human and animal health from the bacteria contained in raw meat. Studies carried out on a variety of raw diets showed Salmonella and E.coli were both present which can be shed in faeces with a potential for humans to become exposed and infected. Toxoplasmosis can also be present in raw meat which is extremely dangerous to pregnant women. Another worry is the risk of missing out on major food groups or not feeding them in the correct quantities. In a study of five raw food diets, three homemade and two commercially available, all were all found to have nutritional deficiencies or excesses that could damage the dogs health when given long term. Vets often see evidence of this in dogs presenting with bad coats - a sign of too little fat in the diet. Mild anaemia is a result of too much fat and not enough protein. Homemade diets can lack the correct amounts of calcium and phosphorus, essential for healthy bones and teeth. Even if they are present in the correct amounts, if the diet is of a poor quality, it may make it difficult for the dog to absorb the calcium and phosphorus properly. Some raw meat diets can contain too much liver which

over time could lead to a vitamin A toxicity known as Hypervitaminosis A although this condition is uncommon. Feeding raw bones can lead to further problems such as internal puncture following ingestion, choking on bones and tooth fractures. Furthermore bones are not good for the teeth as they cause damage to the enamel. Dogs with late stage kidney or severe liver failure should avoid Raw diets altogether and opt for a commercially available kidney/ liver diet, which is low in protein to prevent further damage to the organs. Dogs with pancreatitis or other digestive problems should start with a cooked homemade diet prescribed by a vet until their symptoms clear up before changing to a raw version. In conclusion high quality commercially available dog foods have been tested extensively over many years to ensure they are nutritionally balanced and undergo rigorous testing and procedures to keep Salmonella and E.coli cases to a minimum just as in human food. Commercial food is far less time consuming, considerably cheaper and does not carry the risks previously mentioned.

HOMELESS CATS MORE LIKELY TO BE BLACK OR BLACK AND WHITE More black and black-and-white cats are being taken in by York Cats Protection Adoption Centre than any other colour.

equally good companions as any other colour cat. “If you are able to adopt a cat please get in touch as we’d love to show you the beautiful black and black and white cats we have that are desperate for a loving home,” says Helen.

The Centre which provides an essential cat rehoming service in the local area, says that out of the 40 of unwanted cats they are looking after, 17 are black or black and white.

Helen continues, “One black cat in need of a home is Dil, a proper soft lad! He simply loves being fussed and stroked and enjoys the company of people. He can be a little bit shy with new folk when he first meets them, but it doesn’t take him more than a few minutes to warm up and he’s soon putty in your hands! Dil is very eager to find a new home, so if you have a large shaped hole in your life this gentle giant is the man to fill it!”

“The unfortunate thing for these cats is that not only do we have more of them coming in, they are also much harder to find homes for. They often get overlooked by prospective owners who would rather adopt a more unusual colour, like ginger, or tabby cats which are very popular,” says Helen Curry, Deputy Adoption Centre Manager.

York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@ cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Website www.york.cats.org.uk

National figures from the charity show that on average black and black and white cats wait around 2 - 3 weeks longer to be rehomed than other coloured moggies. Staff at the York Centre are keen to express that black and white cats have just as much love to give and make

GARDENING CONIFERS

by Pippa Greenwood Dwarf Conifers - There are many conifers which reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well.

www.pippagreenwood.com

Conifers are a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year. With several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation.

Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’ Tall and Narrow - Very stylish, many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. >>

>> Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’.

• Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost.

Pyramid-shaped Conifers - With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and if carefully position are often useful to hide an eyesore.

• Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well.

Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’

• Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour.

Spherical Conifers - With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look great in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground. Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’ Ground-Cover Conifers - Great for hiding low-lying eyesores such as manhole covers, an evergreen groundcover hides them all year long. Low growing conifers also work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds. They will help to keep weeds at bay and are very low maintenance. Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’. Conifers for Containers - Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help to bring structure, texture and off-season colour. Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘SekkanSugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’ CONIFER PLANTING AND GROWING TIPS • Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure. 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

• Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely.

• Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll end up exposing all the old growth as they don’t produce dormant buds.

COOKING MOTORING Best 4x4s By James Baggott

F

rom mummies collecting at the school gates to business owners who need a reliable working vehicle, there’s plenty of choice in the off-road category. What’s more the latest crop of pumped-up SUVs also offer clever technology, luxurious interiors and don’t have to cost the earth. Here we take a look at five of our favourites for you to put a new reg plate on.

BMW X3 Price: From £30,990 The BMW X3 is the little brother to the Range Rover-rivaling X5, but don’t let that you put you off. It’s got the cache of that blue and white propeller badge on the bonnet, is beautifully trimmed and is built for comfort. Some say the styling isn’t as sharp as it needs to be, but with plenty of spec and low running costs it’s well worth a look.

NISSAN QASHQAI Price: From £17,595 The Nissan Qashqai has recently been revamped – giving it fresh looks to keep it firmly placed in the top 10 best-selling cars in the UK chart. It’s a compact SUV that’s easy to live with every day, affordable and extremely comfortable. The new exterior design tweaks look superb, it’s wonderfully refined and the interior is packed with helpful new technology. With plenty of engine choice it’s hard to beat.

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Price: From £37,705 With fresh new looks straight out of Stateside, the Jeep brings a slice of American Pie to a sometimes-bland car category. Beefy looks match its proportions and it’s certainly recognisable on the roads with an imposing stance. Packed with technology, a sumptuous interior and a surprisingly economic 2.0-litre engine choice, the Grand Cherokee is a leftfield choice that shouldn’t be ignored.

DACIA DUSTER Price: From £9,495 The budget brand offers no-nonsense, affordable and practical cars – and the Duster is our pick of the range. With chunky off-road styling, genuine 4x4 capability and prices that wouldn’t look out of place in a cash and carry it’s certainly worth a look. Think more functional than luxury, with the base spec coming without a radio and air-con. We’d say for the top-of-the-range model that’ll still be less than most hatchbacks.

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER Price: From £23,984 With an innovative plug-in hybrid variant that can do 30 miles on pure electric, combined with a combustion engine for longer journeys, the Outlander is carving a niche in the SUV market. Ok, so the looks won’t set the world on fire, but it’s well-made, extremely capable off road and is comfortable to drive. With very competitive pricing thrown into the mix, you really should try an Outlander.
