or better, or simply for the sake of change and aesthetics, you will, I hope, notice a major difference in the magazine this month! No prizes here, but after over 6 years of having an advert on the front cover, I’ve decided for future issues to run with a cover photograph. This month is a picture of Thomason Foss near Goathland on the Moors – one of my favourite places – and was taken by Alex Yoxall Photography based in Pickering. In small part, I hope, the change will help build the feeling that the Handy Mag is much more than a directory, and provide appeal to everyone through its content of local community organisations and events, articles and business editorials. Come September, as I’m writing this, and the weather and days are become distinctly autumnal; the leaves are turning and my other half is reminding

me of the value of jumpers versus the cost of heating. Easy for him when in he is off working in Tanzania or some other faraway place, and I’m in my office at home, all day wrapped in woollies! Whilst Autumn is a beautiful time, and ‘autumnal’ a rather beautiful word, it comes with its consequences. So plan ahead, and be prepared for winter by ordering your wood and coal, cleaning your chimney and servicing your boiler. It’s the girl guide in me! But have you noticed the masses of berries in the hedgerows? Is this an omen of a hard winter to come? If you have any comments about the magazine please send them to me at the email address below - especially if they are nice ones! Well done to Mrs Simpson of Wigginton for winning the August competition. Until next month,

Adverse weather conditions, extremes of temperatures and air pollution cause stress to woody plants. The consequences can be expensive if a tree fails with possible damages/injuries/fatalities when trees are not monitored by a professional arborist.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS CAN CARRY OUT COMPLIMENTARY 12-18 MONTH INSPECTIONS OF YOUR TREES Regular inspection of your trees by a professional arborist can not only help prevent/

reduce the severity of future insect and disease problems but an arborist will check your tree for potential hazards such as hanging/broken branches, cracks, cavities, deadwood, ground heave, trunk decay, root rot and lean. Additionally consideration is given to the age, target, size and species of the tree, it is often seen that trees can remain visually healthy for a long period of time despite having problems inflicted naturally or man-made. Bartlett Tree Experts can recognize hazardous defects in trees and suggest possible corrective actions. Don’t wait until a tree fails, have a professional arborist undertake regular inspections to avoid potential property damage/injury to persons.

Always be aware to look for fungal growths at all times

of the year but particularly in the autumn period and if any are seen, take a photograph if possible, and have a Bartlett arborist inspect the tree.

Laetiporus sulphureus Commonly known as ‘Chicken of the Wood’, occurs on some broadleaved and coniferous hosts such as; Oak, Sweet Chestnut and Yew and causes stem rot and/or butt rot. The fruiting bodies appear fleshy, bright yellow and white underneath but as they mature become darker. They vary in size from approximately 2 inches to 12 inches across and 1inch to 4inches thick. This fungi is a white rot decay fungi attacking cellulose and lignin especially on Oak and Yew, which, dependant on the characteristics of the timber can cause it to become rather brittle. • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Meripilus giganteus Occurs more commonly on Beech and occasionally Oak, this is one of the most serious white rot decay fungi that attacks to root system. Infected trees are liable to splitting and windthrow. The deeper root system may be seriously decayed but the upper root system may be of reasonable health supplying the tree with enough nutrients to give the appearance of the tree being of reasonable health.

Pests and Diseases Not all insects on trees and shrubs are damaging some are beneficial, Bartlett arborists are trained to correctly identify those which can damage woody plants and offer effective treatments. Bartlett Tree Experts operates a modern Diagnostic Laboratory under the supervision of Dr Glynn Percival to support insect pest and disease management services.

Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner The caterpillar feeds within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the upper surface which eventually form brown dead patches, giving the tree an autumnal appearance by July and resulting in early leaf fall. Recent evidence indicates that this insect can cause smaller trees to die while the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth. Cumulative loss in stored food products may compromise long-term health of mature trees.

Bleeding Canker / Root Rot Bleeding Canker is a bacterial, not a fungal disease. It affects the common Horse Chestnut, Beech, Lime, Sycamore, Birch and Alder. It affects the branches and trunks of trees which start oozing a red or black tarry substance from the affected lesions on the bark. This usually develops from ground level upwards and is caused by a bacterial infection which kills the cambium (bark). The infection is then likely to spread around the trunk.

T

he Howardian Dental Practice is a new practice specially comissioned to serve the community of the Howardian Hills and surrounding area. Dr Christine Parker BDS who hails form County Durham has lived in the locality for the past 10 years and has founded the surgery after recognising the need for a good quality, local and modern dental service. By providing access outside of normal working hours with appointments from 8am on some days and a late evening surgery on others, Christine encourages busy people to attend regularly for their essential dental care without having to use up their valuable holiday entitlement. Combined with ample free parking, fully disabled access and minimal travel costs Christine believes that private dentistry is a realistic option for many people. Christine is known and trusted by her existing patients, many of whom have moved practice with her in the past. They appreciate her expertise, quality of care and

customer service. “Here at The Howardian we prioritise patient care and comfort with traditional service values.” explains Christine. “Because we are a low volume, single surgery practice we do not have the high numbers of patients seen at other practices and therefore have the time to ensure your comfort and fully diagnose and discuss your dental requirements.” With a view to reducing your future need for dental treatment The Howardian also provides Oral Health Education, individualy tailored to your needs. Christine says that by doing this they aim to encourage patients into good habits, be they children or mature adults with a complex history of dental treatment. “We believe everyone can achieve a comfortable, functional and aesthetic mouth and dentition. We have a wealth of experience in transforming worn and diseased teeth into mouths patients can be proud of,” Christine says. By using quality dental materi-

als and proven, modern techniques Christine aims to provide pain free treatment and durable restorations thereby reducing your need for future treatment. Whilst Christine’s main passion is general dentistry she also has several years experience in Non Surgical Facial Rejuvenation, that is wrinkle reduction, non-permanent facial fillers and facial peeling. These techniques can be used to subtly enhance your features restoring contour and vitality . Christine has many patients who expressed their delight with their treatment over the years and these include Mr John Priestley BDS (retd) whose video testimonal can be seen on the practice website. For more information and to see a video of the practice please visit www.howardiandental.co.uk, or contact the surgery on 01347 878111. “We look forward to seeing you and impressing you with our care, service and comittment.”

Autumn Fruit Slump

Although we’ve seen the last of the summer berries there’s plenty of seasonal fruit around: pears, apples, blueberries, plums and damsons, and of course wild blackberries. For the photo recipe I used 800g cooking apples, 100g blackberries and 300g blueberries – but any combination works well, aim for a kilo to a kilo and a half of fruit for 4 – 6 people.

01904 468777 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Ingredients 1-1½ kilos fruit – peel, core and finely slice apples and pears and destone and halve plums and damsons. 4 tablespoons caster sugar 250g tub of mascarpone 175g self raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 lemon – grate the zest and squeeze the juice 50g melted butter 2 or 3 tbsp milk Method • Place the apples, pears or plums in a saucepan with a little water and 2 of the tbsps of sugar and bring slowly to the boil. Cook for a few minutes until the fruit just begins to soften. • Tip into a large ovenproof dish and add the blueberries and blackberries. Leave to cool. • Beat the mascarpone until smooth and using 2 spoons dollop 6 spoons of mascarpone onto the cooled fruit – don’t spread them together. • Sift the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl, add the lemon zest and 2 tbsps sugar. • Add the melted butter and 2 or 3 tbsps of milk and combine to get a loose scone type mixture. Again using 2 spoons top each mascarpone blob with a dollop of the scone mixture. • Bake in a preheated oven (220C/425F/gas mark 7) for 20- 25 minutes until the scones are golden and the fruit is bubbling. • Leave to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. TRAVEL

St Lucia by Solange Hando

T

ossed 14 times between French and English colonial powers, the island has thrown both cultures into the melting pot with a generous helping of African folklore, a little East Indian spice and vestiges of early Amerindian settlers. English is the official language but Creole, a mix of African dialects and French, is coming back, in tune with the stirring rhythm of reggae and calypso. St Lucia is tourist-hungry but eco-friendly and most developments have been limited to the north-west around Rodney Bay. There are fine sands and palm trees, a gleaming marina and out on the hilly peninsula, known as Pigeon Island, fabulous views over the shimmering Caribbean Sea on one side and foaming Atlantic breakers on the other. Pleasure boats sail along the coast looking out for sunfish, dolphins and whales, past the lovely Marigot Bay featured in Dr Doolittle, the fabulous diving sites, hidden coves and sleepy villages strung with fishing nets and laundry drying on the beach. On a Friday night, when the beat of Afro-Caribbean steel bands echo along the shore, the village of Anse la Raye stages a gigantic fish fry al fresco, a lively family event where all sorts of delicacies bubble in the pots or sizzle in the pans - seafood, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, rice, callaloo soup and more. The national dish is salt fish with green bananas, but equally popular is the fiery pepperpot cooked in cassava juice. Soufrière, the old capital, 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

nestles below the luxuriant volcanic cones of the Pitons, seen on every postcard, but few visitors linger in town. The world’s only ‘drive-in volcano’ is just a stone’s throw away, seething with sulphurous fumes and gurgling mud, and there are Botanical Gardens with mineral springs, tropical blooms and a stunning Diamond Fall gushing down multi-coloured rocks. To the north, the new capital, Castries, is famed for its Jazz Festival and duty-free malls, gleaming with Colombian emeralds and Amerindian craft, but the old town retains a quaint colonial charm. The cathedral has stunning murals and stained glass, designed by Nobel-prize artist Dunstan St Omer, no doubt a source of inspiration for myriad craftsmen and painters who have set up home on the nearby Hill of Good Luck. Climbing the Pitons is strictly for the brave but there are easier treks through the hills and rainforest with jeep safaris heading for remote hamlets, banana plantations and Creole farms fragrant with cinnamon and nutmeg. There may be time to taste cassava bread, bathe in a waterfall and bargain for bird ornaments carved out of coconut shells. At over

At the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean islands, St Lucia is just a drop in the ocean, 27 by 14 miles, with spectacular mountains, lush rainforest and fertile valleys fringed by sandy beaches. 3000 feet, Mount Gimmie, the highest peak, rises above it all but views can be enjoyed with no effort at all in the eight-seater gondola offering an expensive but popular ‘sky ride’. There you glide up a hillside, skimming the tree tops, gazing at incense and fern trees, breadnut, blue maho and heliconia, spotting hummingbirds, butterflies, mongoose and tarantulas dangling inches from your face. Rolling farmlands stretch into the distance, sprinkled with villages where the occasional beat of a Creole drum seems to touch the very heart of this varied and scenic island.

YORK

Mists and mellow fruitfulness The end of summer is unmistakably upon us. Cooler, greyer, darker earlier. Heavy dew in the morning. Autumn beckons.

T

he departure of summer can be depressing, but autumn has much to offer. The landscape is beautiful, especially if you have the good fortune to live near a forest which can be ablaze with yellow, gold and red. Autumn is, of course, the time of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Late blackberries, chestnuts, mushrooms, hazelnuts, rosehips – and sloes (which will make gin in time for Christmas). Fungi are mainly autumnal. In woodlands and forests, you can find a wonderful variety of mushrooms, toadstools, earth balls, puffballs and bracket fungi. But even with experience and modern field guides, 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

identifying them can be tricky and time-consuming. Mycologists (botanists who specialise in fungi) use scientific names as a matter of routine. English names have been coined for some of the better known mushrooms and toadstools: Shaggy Caps (also known as Lawyer’s Wigs), Parasols, the Oyster Mushroom, the Beefsteak Mushroom, the Penny Bun – to say nothing of the Death Cap and the Destroying Angel. In truth, I’ve seldom heard these allegedly popular names used. There are thousands of different species of mushroom and toadstool. A few are edible and delicious. A few are poisonous, some fatal. The great majority lie somewhere in between: not very nice, but not harmful either. If you want to experiment with some of the edible species, there are plenty of books available to help you identify them. But remember that the only really safe way is to identify with certainty anything you’re going to eat. Disregard all those old saws about blackening sixpences or being nibbled by rabbits. Some of the deadliest species can

be eaten with impunity by other mammals. I’ve tried a dozen or so species over the years, but for my money there’s little to beat the traditional mushroom family, Agaricus. There’s a variety of closely related species in the family, but the one to watch out for is the socalled Yellow Stainer (Agaricus xanthodermus). Looking like a horse mushroom, this species immediately turns bright yellow when cut or bruised. It won’t kill you, but it can make you very sick. The family Amanita contains the deadliest of all species, the Death Cap (Amanita phalloides). The tiniest quantity can bring death in appalling agony There is also has the all-white Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa) and that toadstool beloved of elves and goblins, the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), with its red cap and white spots. One way to be sure of avoiding these most deadly of toadstools is never to eat anything whose gills are white. But, again, there is only one sensible rule: if you don’t know with certainty what it is, don’t eat it. Perhaps the safest and most environmentally friendly way to enjoy autumn’s fungal feast is to photograph it. Then you can spend as long as you like poring over books trying to decide what you’ve seen. The book I use most is a photographic guide, ‘Mushrooms’ by Roger Phillips (Macmillan Reference, 2006). Of course, you don’t have to struggle to identify fungi. You can always just enjoy their strange beauty.

CUT FUEL COSTS & SAVE MONEY with a HEATING HEALTH CHECK

D

RS Plumbing has a fresh new option for homeowners who would like to reduce their heating bills and their carbon footprint – without great expense. Their heating health check can boost the energy efficiency of your current boiler, making savings of around 20% on your heating bill – or up to £160 a year.

“You don’t need a brand new boiler to improve the efficiency of your home heating system.” DRS Plumbing’s owner Darren Smillie and his team will flush out the system and install a grade A pump – the ‘heart’ of the central heating system – which will make a significant, noticeable difference to the boiler’s efficiency. Darren said: “Our heating health check is excellent value for money and represents our commitment to helping people improve their heating systems, whatever their budget. Pound for pound, we have found this is the most cost-effective way of reducing your carbon

footprint.” If you are in a position to invest in a new boiler, Darren offers excellent value for money and consistently emphasises quality. He works with top-of-therange Worcester Bosch boilers and is specially trained by Worcester to install and run their systems to optimum specifications. Customers have the confidence of knowing that DRS Plumbing uses the best materials for any job, putting quality, efficiency and safety first. As a Worcester specialist, DRS Plumbing can offer a five-year warranty on parts and labour for the boilers he installs. DRS Plumbing are registered with GasSafe and the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, and for extra peace of mind, Darren remains the contact for all his customers. In fact, as well as designing and selling your heating system, he’ll be the one who installs it, too. He added: “With any business, you always get the best service from the business owner, and I do like to give our customers the confidence that comes from dealing with me personally. We don’t use

call centres and we have a mobile number and a landline number that we endeavour to answer promptly, in person. “Also, we are not VAT registered – which means even more savings for our customers.” Happy customers Mr and Mrs Graham, from York, said: “Darren from DRS Plumbing fitted a new Worcester Bosh boiler and renewed our radiators. The heating is so much more efficient, the hot water is hot (and there’s plenty of it) and the whole house warms up so quick and it stays warm. We are genuine customers who are genuinely happy. I would recommend that anyone wanting a heating system upgrade in the York area to use DRS Plumbing.” Contact Darren on 01904 499247, mobile 07866 387846 or visit www.d-r-s.co.uk

T

he treasure hunt will take place during the two-day celebration of all things guitar and is organised by the York based music store MOR Music. Special events and performances are taking place around York city Center - all for free. Treasure hunt maps can be collected from MOR Music, Fibbers, The Red Lion, Merchantgate, Mojito’s & from York-Guitar Weekend and MORmusic York on facebook. All proceeds & donations will be going to 6 very worthy local charities - SNAPPY, The William Rhodes Appeal, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, & The Blue Cross at Thirsk, St Leonards Hospice & York Against Cancer. When you have a map, simply follow the clues from place to place, keeping an eye open for those 6 guitars hidden all around York City centre, and along the way pop into one of the venues (Fibbers, The Red Lion, Merchantgate & Mojito’s) who will all be hosting charity gigs from fantastic local bands - all with free entry. The bands & singers are generously all donating their time & talents free of charge to raise even more money for the charities - confirmed so far are; Mantra, Morpheus Rising, Littlemores Hot

Fudge, ..And The Hangnails, Boss Caine, Jonny Dobbs, Tom Kay, Ben Parcell, Prowl, Rachel FoxEvans, & David Swann, and more. There will be special offers to be had along the trail & each place you visit will be making a donation to one of the charities. Once you have completed your map, simply take it back to MOR Music & they’ll enter you into their prize draw to win a guitar! The winner will be announced here in the Handy Mag next month. After York Guitar Weekend is over, MOR Music are then donating the six guitars to the six charities involved to use themselves or auction, or raffle.

Kitchen & bedroom designs to suit you

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...”

“Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 20 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, or the new one which opened in Acomb early this year, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of

creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake

on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tired-out kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense knowhow, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

The best books for

Halloween It’s that one night of the year where we all prepare to be spooked and scared, donning our most frightening costumes and relaying stories of ghosts, ghouls and werewolves. Here, we’ve selected some of the best books to get all the family in the mood for some spinetingling fun and games. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson A fragile young woman, Eleanor, escapes her oppressive existence to stay with three other guests at old Hill House. Soon becoming the victim of a number of strange occurrences, Eleanor struggles to decipher whether she is terrified of the house, or comforted by it in all its weirdness. This dark, psychological tale is bound to set the cogs whirring. The Turn of the Screw by Henry James Hailed as one of the most sinister reads out there, Henry James’ classic tale is of a governess who is sent to care for two newly orphaned children. The story takes a twisted tale when ghosts begin to appear who seem to have much more in common with the two youngsters than they will admit. 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The Haunting of Toby Jugg by Dennis Wheatley Hailed as ‘The Prince of Thriller Writers’, this is Wheatley’s most chilling read which begins with a dark, sinister something trying desperately to get into Toby Jugg’s bedroom window. The wounded Battle of Britain pilot soon embarks upon a struggle with a supernatural force which will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned. Misery by Stephen King Although there are no ghosts or ghouls in this tale, there is one extremely frightening woman, who will be enough to keep you turning the pages long past bedtime. A great one for teenagers upwards, here we have the story of an author who having suffered a car accident and been rescued by his biggest fan, finds himself in one terrifying predicament. Gripping, from start to end.

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill The ultimate thriller about a frightening spectre that haunts the inhabitants of a small market town. When young solicitor Arthur Kipps attends the funeral of an elderly widow, he soon becomes intrigued by the tragic story of a woman in black whom appears to him regularly. Soon, he finds himself intrinsically involved with the legends surrounding the mysterious figure, to his own detriment. The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman This fantastic story is the perfect fright-night read for children over nine, written in a playful nonsensical tone and accompanied by stunning illustrations courtesy of Dave McKean. Lucy becomes alarmed when she suspects that she hears wolves in the walls of her house – particularly with her father’s words ringing in her ears: “when the wolves come out of the walls, it’s all over.”

A Classic...

Dracula by Bram Stoker

It’s a classic horror story, but despite being over a century old, none of the terror is lost in the ageing of this brilliant tale. Bram Stoker has created the ultimate fearsome character in Dracula, a vampire whose power and influence lead to the manipulation of a number of individuals who tend to meet a rather gruesome end. Sinister, dark and incredibly chilling, this is the ultimate vampire read.

MOTORING CAR makers. Give them their due, they normally produce some rather good motors. But occasionally – very occasionally – disasters that should have remained in the design studio slip by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer through the net.

Quiet disasters

Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Renault Koleos

You only have to look over the fence to sister firm Nissan to see that crossovers can be successful – try and order a Qashqai or Juke now and you’ll be looking at a rather long wait. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the Renault Koleos flopped. Renault launched it in 2008 and by 2010 it had been axed, selling just 2,890. The Qashqai, by comparison, sold 9,253 models in March alone.

Citroen C6

We all know that large French saloons haven’t been the most popular cars in Britain. Despite this, Citroen launched the C6 in 2006 with phrases like ‘freethinking’, ‘svelte’, and ‘unmistakable’ in its marketing bumpf. From its launch to the end of 2010, Citroen sold just 889 units – the E60 BMW 5 Series sold ten times as many in the same period. But Citroen always said it had expectations the C6 would find homes ‘in the hundreds, rather than thousands’.

Chrysler Sebring

Chrysler had its eye on entering the Dsegment back in 2007 – and thought the Sebring was the answer. It wasn’t. The press packs said it combined ‘striking design with interior craftsmanship’ with ‘great performance’ thrown in for good measure. The public disagreed and bought only 2,652 of them before it slipped off the price lists in 2009. In the same period, Ford sold 126,368 units of the Mondeo.

Subaru Tribeca

Like Renault, Subaru believed it needed an SUV in its range. So, in 2006, along came the Tribeca. Intended to offer a ‘practical SUV with great handling and a sporty drive’ it failed to find buyers. A face-lift in 2008 did nothing to improve sales and it bowed out that year with just 750 sold. In contrast, the Volvo XC90 – a car Subaru was competing with – sold 11,897 units in the same three years.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

The Toyota Urban Cruiser went on sale in May 2009. Designed to meet a ‘growing 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

demand for vehicles that are cut out for life on urban roads’ it didn’t do the job. Sales at the end of 2010 were 3,017 – the maker had planed to shift 2,000 units a year.

Chrysler Crossfire

Launched with great fanfare in 2003, the Crossfire was Chrysler’s sports car for the masses. Based on the firstgeneration Mercedes SLK, it came in coupe and convertible forms with retro American styling. However, only 4,544 units were sold in five years, and the Crossfire quietly died in 2008. In contrast the SLK sold 4,362 units in 2004 alone.

Vauxhall Signum

More than just a cut-down Vectra, the Signum was intended to offer the executive experience in an otherwise humdrum Vauxhall and arrived in 2003. But almost five years to the day, Vauxhall called time on the Signum, axing it with just 17,344 sales to its name. This was ‘on target’ according to the firm but industry experts say it was well off what was originally planned.

Ford Cougar

Along with the Focus, the Cougar was one of the cars that demonstrated Ford’s ‘new edge’ look in the late 90s. Available with the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, the Cougar was loved by the press. Sadly, the public wasn’t convinced – the lack of a prestige badge meant sales totaled 13,958 in four years. In contrast, the BMW 3 Series Coupe sold 44,420 between ’98 and ’02, showing a badge makes all the difference.

Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Billed as a car that combined ‘an SUV, sports saloon, and luxury estate car’ into one package, the Mercedes R-Class arrived in 2005 hoping to carve a niche of its own. It was such a niche that few Brits bought it, and even a makeover in 2010 did little to improve the 3,433 sales clocked up so far. Mercedes says those numbers are ‘in-line with expectations’, but we’re not so sure about that…

Amazing Autumn Colour

is just too tempting

A

utumn colour has the ability to make me go weak at the knees. I love it....just as the temperatures are dropping and things can become dull and gloomy, your garden develops a new potential – to be positively glowing with fantastic foliage colour. Autumn is a great time to plant trees and shrubs and as the plants are showing their beautiful colours, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting. Plants for vertical surfaces: Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, the heart-shaped leaves may measure 25-30cm across and their splendid scarlet and crimson colours are un-missable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. Colours are especially good if the soil is miserable or the root run restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia - commonly known as the Virginia creeper, it’s another sizeable climber, and this also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used on walls without a 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow tall so may need trimming. Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. In autumn the leaves turn from a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining to rich shades of red. Shrubs: Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub, covered with scented creamy white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. The foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-free soil. Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring. The leaves change from a coppery colour to bright green to one huge mass of fiery colours in autumn. Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn show stoppers, and for smaller

gardens you find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows. They do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish–orange or purple with a bright display in autumn. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke. If your garden soil is waterlogged now, then wait a week or more until it is in better condition before planting. If the

Design Tips...

Garden Landscaping

N

ow is the ideal time to make any major garden improvements you wish to make. Autumn and winter are prime planting times for trees, shrubs, hedges and bulbs. It gives the plants time to establish before the growing season commences in spring. Maybe you want to dig a pond, build a deck or patio or just fancy a change of scene. Find ideas from gardening magazines, TV programmes, and your neighbours. Alternatively, you can employ a professional garden landscaping service. They are especially useful if you have major design changes you wish to make or are unable to do the work yourself. Landscaping and garden design services can come up with ideas you hadn’t thought of, advise on the best plants for your garden and source hard landscaping items easily. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. It’s very easy to become carried away. Ensure any plants

you choose are suitable for your area and soil otherwise you could be very disappointed. Don’t forget your front garden either. This is the first thing visitors and passers-by see and a well-tended and beautifully designed front garden creates a positive impression.

Working from home

Shoes by Ted Bruning

I

have done it. I have taken the plunge. I have gone out and bought a new pair of slippers. Some time ago, I wrote of my horror at finding that I still had my slippers on at lunchtime. At the time I saw it as an ominous portent of decline, a herald of the day when, having no-one to impress, I would stop bothering even to change out of my pyjamas. I formed a resolution then always to get fully dressed – which to me includes shod – before sitting down to work. I have rigorously maintained my self-imposed dress code ever since. But now we have a white carpet... I would never buy a white carpet myself, and I was surprised to find one in the front room of the house we rented last August. Traditionally, landlords bought patterned carpets, often in swirly autumn shades, to hide the dirt. The suspicion is natural, if yet unproven, that the white carpet is an opportunity for a bit of profiteering, and that the cost of cleaning it that will inevitably be deducted from our deposit when we leave would actually clean a carpet ten times its size. Perhaps I’m being too cynical, but you can understand where I’m coming from. Anyway, the grim winter had a profound effect on our white carpet. No matter how hard I wiped my feet, a fair bit of leaf-litter, mud, and other substances were transferred from my shoes to the carpet. The effect was compounded by the dog’s negligent habit of not wiping its feet at all. Everybody else, including visitors, takes their shoes off when they come in, so the blame was entirely mine and Flossie’s. And I had to concede that we hadn’t half made a mess. My old slippers having long ago resolved themselves into their constituent parts, I trotted off to get a new pair and, although there’s not much we can do about the dog, at least I have now joined the ranks of the blameless and shall henceforth only wear slippers, not shoes, indoors. This does not, I have promised myself, presage that slow decline into working-from-home slobbishness I fear so much. It does, though, raise a question in my mind. I still have a horror of taking my shoes off in other people’s houses. Why? It’s a perfectly reasonable request now that everyone on the planet seems to have fitted carpets that are at least biscuit-coloured if not actually white. But somewhere deep in my psyche there is a commandment that will not be denied, and it says: Thou Shalt Not Take Thy Shoes Off, Even In Other People’s Houses. Our friends seem to be resigned to my being their only shod visitor; in strangers’ houses I make no move to remove, and no-one has challenged me yet, thank God. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Perhaps it’s a class thing. I am resolutely middle-class: I have a sitting room not a lounge, and a loo not a toilet. My dad, who would be 103 if he were alive, was even more middle-class than me: upper middle-class, if you like. I cannot begin to imagine his amazement if anyone had asked him to take his shoes off before coming indoors! And would you insist on Prince Charles slipping off his 500-guinea loafers if, for some reason, he turned up at your door? Or David Cameron? Well, maybe David Cameron; and indeed it’s such a part of modern etiquette that he might do it without being asked. Which makes me a real pariah! I shall, I have decided, only start taking off my shoes unasked when I see the Sweeney breaking down some villain’s door to be greeted by a wife not screaming hysterically, in accordance with cop show protocol: “Leavehimalonehesdonenuffinkwrongyouslags”, but calmly ordering Jack and George: “Shoes off please, lads – new carpet in the lounge”. And not before.

usinesses who file their tax returns late this year face a fine starting at £100, even for those who’ve paid their tax in advance. That means now is the time to get your paperwork in order and avoid that post-Christmas tax panic that spells more stress and inconvenience than most businesses can handle. As a former farmer and small business owner himself, Donald Inglis, of Donald Inglis Chartered Accountants, knows this very well. That’s why he’ll come to you at home or at your business premises to discuss your accounts – saving you the time and hassle of a day or half-day away from work that many business owners have to take when they need to see their accountant. If necessary, he’ll even see you in the evening or at the weekend. Farmers who need to improve their profits, keep more of the money they earn or work with someone who thoroughly understands the red tape affecting agricul-

Our new column from local teenager Emily

From hamster droppings to elephant dung...!

H

ello again. This month I am going to tell you about my month-long trip to Kenya during the 2012 summer holiday, for providing support to rural communities. It promises to be a life changing venture for me and, I trust, those I will be working for. The trip is organised by Camps International, an organisation which has built over 30 schools, planted nearly half a million trees and provided sports facilities for 6,500 people. I will be flying out to a rural community in south-east Kenya to contribute towards teamwork activities to improve the quality of life for the local people. A few things I might be taking part in will be; building schools, wells, libraries, houses, planting trees and (apparently!) making paper out of elephant poo!, whilst learning about the traditions and ways of life for the people who live there. Finally, after these weeks of hard labour, lugging rocks and painting doors, I am to make a five day trek up to the peak of the second largest mountain in Africa – Mount Kenya. Why not Mombasa beach, sun and relaxation?! Through these monthly articles the Handy Mag is helping me towards the cost of my trip. And between now and when I go, I am hoping to raise the majority of the £3500 needed. Already I’ve been hatching plans with others from my school to raise funds through nonuniform days, cake sales and car boot sales. So far I have made a drop in the ocean of £65 at my local village fete, thanks to the services of a deceptively woolly lamb for ‘Guessing the weight’ and my hamster in ‘Guess the square the hamster will poo on’!! On that note, I will leave you to your overdue essays and unfinished crosswords. Until next month,

50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

W

ith another summer definitely behind us and autumn setting in, its time to play avoid the bugs again for the next few months; dodge that person in the supermarket with the sniffles and turn away at the merest hint of a coughing individual nearby. Unfortunately the “common cold” will often still catch up with us despite our best efforts. However, dogs are much less discerning when coming into contact with each other and will happily spread their germs around at will. Last year we had quite a problem with a condition we call canine infectious tracheobronchitis, also commonly, but misleadingly, called kennel cough. The misleading part is that dog don’t have to have been in kennels to become infected. The condition is highly contagious and dogs can pick up infection anywhere where there are large numbers of dogs in reasonably close proximity to each other. This can include rescue and boarding kennels, obedience and puppy socialisation classes, dog shows and going shooting. However, they can pick it up just from being in contact with another infected dog or even just going for a walk in an area where an infected dog has been. There are several possible causes for kennel cough, the main ones being canine adenovirus 2, parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica. The other organisms we often see involved usually cause what we call secondary infections, whereby they aren’t

by Nicky Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets

the primary problem but take advantage of the fact that the dog’s immune system is already fighting another infection. In the average healthy, adult dog, kennel cough doesn’t normally make them particularly unwell. They will have a hacking cough, owners often say it sounds like they have something stuck in their throat, but are otherwise their usual bright, happy selves and still eating fine and keen to go for their walks. The infection can last for a couple of weeks and will often resolve on its own without treatment. However, in some cases, especially very young puppies, much older dogs, or those with long term chest problems, the illness can be a bit more serious and need more aggressive treatment. If needing treatment, this normally involves a course of antibiotics and sometimes anti-coughing medicine is needed if the cough is especially bad. Most dogs, though, would be expected to make a full recovery within a few weeks. Vaccination is available against the major causes of kennel cough, though unfortunately it doesn’t protect against every possible cause. The vaccine is given by squirting a small amount of liquid up the dog’s nose, most tolerate this very well, although some really don’t like it! If your dog is diagnosed with kennel cough, it is a good idea to try not to walk them in an area where a lot of other dogs go until the cough has settled. As with a lot of these types of infections the time that they’re most contagious is actually before the symptoms start to show but its still worth keeping them away from other dogs when they are coughing. Hopefully, though, this year both us and our dogs will stay cough-free, for the most part at least!

Cat Protection Cats Protection York is seeking….. a home for a familiar face! This month York CP is still on the search for a new home for our lovely lady Tinker. You may recognise her from last month’s edition but sadly she is still with us so we are championing her once again in the hope someone out there will want our Tinker! Tinker is a sprightly lady who has had some interest from potential adopters during her time with us. However, these potential adopters all seem put off when they realise that Tinker isn’t yet ready for kisses and cuddles with people she doesn’t know. Tinker is affectionate in her own way and she loves to chatter to you as you go about your

business, she just isn’t confident enough yet to approach every man and his dog for a nuzzle! Staff are certain that once she finds understanding new owners that will give her time to settle, that she will be just as affectionate with them as she is with us – hopefully more so! York CP would also like to remind all those feline loving folk out there that Black cats still need homes too! As we are in October please spare a thought for all those black cats in adoption centres that are been over-looked just because of their colour. Black cats aren’t bad luck, they don’t just belong with witches and they don’t all look the same – trust me! Black cats come in all shapes and sizes and can often be, though not

exclusively, some of the friendliest cats around. So if you think your house is missing a sleek black feline, why not drop into York adoption centre and see what black beauties we have seeking new homes.
