elcome to the October edition...
With the nights closing in and the weather getting cooler, make time to curl up in front of the fire and read through this month’s edition! The clocks go back on 27th October and Halloween is just around the corner. There are pumpkin festivals and Halloween spectaculars this month to help you celebrate the change in season from summer to autumn. My family know I love reading (I devour books at great speed) and they bought me a Kindle for my last birthday. One of the things I love about it is that you can increase the size of the font on the page and this means that I can read in bed without glasses on. I do have to turn the page a lot though as I am now down to about 5 words on a page - I don’t think this is going to be a long term solution! You can also purchase books very quickly online – they only take about 2 seconds to download – so I can finish one book and be reading another within minutes. One of the main things I don’t like about my Kindle is that you don’t see the cover of the book you’re reading once you start. This means that I don’t remember what I’ve read – or even what I’m reading! And choosing books is difficult because you can’t really see what sort of book it is or how big it is from the little cover images on my Kindle. You really can’t beat spending a Saturday afternoon browsing a shop full of shelves filled with books. I think I might have to put up with wearing my glasses in bed and go back to buying proper paper books again! Well done to Brian Smith of Huntington for winning the August competition. Until next month…

A Maintenance Plumber to rely on Ben Leefe has been creating beautiful bathrooms in the York area for ten years.
for a long time, but it seemed the installation and wiring meant they were stuck with it. Ben, however, managed to change them over to a thermostatic shower... and restore peace to the family once more! This typical case study demonstrates how Ben is willing to spend time to help homeowners find exactly he right solution for their home and their family. Free estimates and quotes are available.
H • Multi trade team e mainly works in domestic properties and specialises in installing bathrooms, showers – and helping families solve their plumbing problems.
Ben doesn’t believe in being a ‘jack of all trades’ – he prefers himself and the people he works with to be masters of one. He works alongside experienced tilers and a trusted, qualified electrician, which means he can ensure your bathroom project is completed as swiftly as possible and every aspect of it is carried out by the appropriate expert. While he focuses on the plumbing – the bit he does best – the tiling and electrics
are being carried out by people who are fully qualified for the job. In response to customer demand, last year Ben qualified to work with gas and was registered with Gas Safe, meaning he can bring the reliability and quality of workmanship he’s known for to boiler and central heating installations and plumbing. A SEASON TO REMEMBER AT
STRENSALL BOWLING CLUB The Strensall club won promotion from the Ryedale Veterans 2nd Division to the 1st Division this season after a nail biting last game against the leaders, Easingwold, who had a 3 point advantage.
S
trensall Bowling Club, which was established in the 1930s, has come to the end of another season and after a slow start finished on a high note. They compete in three leagues; Ryedale Veterans, York Private Clubs and Bata Gas, and various knockout cups. As a small club they perform well against some of the much bigger clubs in the area. The Strensall club won promotion from the Ryedale Veterans 2nd Division to the 1st Division this season after a nail biting last game against the leaders, Easingwold, who had a 3 point advantage. Strensall were in good form and won the game 7-1. This was a great achievement as they have now moved from the 3rd Division to the 1st in just two years. The Private Clubs League had already been won by Stewart of Pocklington with Selby in second place only 1 point
10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
ahead of Strensall. Once again in a dramatic final game of the season against Wigginton, and in semi-darkness with two of their rinks already defeated, they won the last rink 11-10 and gained the 2 points needed for promotion. It was also rather fitting that the Club Captain, Graham Clarke was in the winning rink as he is standing down as captain at the end of this season after 4 years. The Bata Gas league is where inexperienced players learn the rules and etiquette of the game and Strensall finished in the lower half of this division. In conclusion, it was certainly a successful season for Strensall Bowling Club. The club will swap grass for carpet at the New Earswick Indoor Club during the autumn and winter months until next April. If you are interested in giving bowling a try, new members are always welcome. “Many of our visitors comment that they often get lost in
Strensall looking for the Bowling Club!” says Graham. “Our entrance is situated between house numbers 5-7 Park Gate, near the bus terminal. We have the clubhouse where members can gather, have a coffee and socialise and not all members have to take part in competitions.”

NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF If you don’t open your door to trick-or-treaters, try opening up a book with a terrifying plot-line. There are plenty of great novels and short stories to start your knees knocking and teeth chattering for this time of year…
The Shining
Stephen King For Jack Torrance, taking a new job as caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel is far from the fresh start he’s hoping for. Off-season at a deserted hotel means a playground for madness, leaving Jack and his unsuspecting family isolated and in danger. Five year old Danny Torrance is the only one who can sense the horrors to come. He’s gifted with ‘the shining’, a sort of sixthsense for the sinister and the threatening. As the snow begins to fall, the curtain of madness descends.
The Day of the Triffids
John Wyndham Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the garden… If you’ve ever hated that ‘morning after the night before’ feeling then Bill Masen is having the day from hell. He misses a major meteorite shower because his eyes have been bandaged, but the next morning is far from a sight for sore eyes. He wakes to find everyone else has been 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
blinded and the world has become a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Written in a time rife with Cold War paranoia, Wyndham’s vision of bio-warfare has made this a science fiction classic.
The Enemy
Charlie Higson Your teenagers will either love this book, or it’ll terrify the pants off them. In a postapocalyptic London, all adults have been infected with a sickness, effectively rendering them zombies. They’re hungry and crazed and are running amuck in the capital, leaving everyone under fourteen who have survived the zombie virus to either find a place to hide, or come up with a plan to defeat them. It’s the first in an absolutely cracking series. Just don’t make it your bedtime reading.
The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allen Poe The master of gothic horror, Poe doesn’t fail to send a chill down even the most rigid of spines. He has perfected the art of the psychological thriller with his tales of lunatics, ghosts and murderers all riddled with
the human characteristics of jealousy, deviousness, lust for revenge and sometimes just pure hatred. Whether it’s the ‘da-dum, da-dum’ of ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ or the haunting refrain of ‘The Raven’, his tales of terror will crawl inside your head, make a little nest, and stay there…until you’re just about to nod off to sleep.
1984
George Orwell ‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past’. Winston Smith works in the Record Department at the Ministry of Truth and is beavering away rewriting history to manipulate the present and future. Under the watchful eye of Big Brother, Winston secretly plots to overthrow the totalitarian regime. He’s going to need an ally and he thinks he’s found it in the form of new love, fellow-worker Julia. One of the most influential books ever written, Orwell’s dystopian vision has spawned many an imitator and many a reality TV show. Oh, the irony.
American Psycho
Bret Easton Ellis If this book teaches you one lesson, it’s to screen people thoroughly because even the handsome ones can be absolute nutters. Enter Patrick Bateman: Wall Street yuppie by day and psychopathic serial killer of young ladies by night. Let’s just say, he has a lot of nasty habits he wouldn’t want to list on his dating profile…and they’re all described in graphic detail for us. Proof that the devil takes many pleasing guises.

ELLA... ON UNIVERSITIES For many people my age, this is a worry at the top of the list. After getting our all-important results this year, there are far too many decisions to even comprehend, and along with them, far too many possible consequences. Getting good enough grades to get in to university is only the beginning of the battle, choosing where to go is more like a tactical war plan, to which strategy is key. Courses need to be evaluated and compared, accommodation needs to be examined, tutors and professors all need to be looked up, the ‘community feel’ of the institution needs assessing, (literally hours can be spent navigating student forums which debate the pros and cons of collegiate vs. non-collegiate unis), the distance from home needs to be accounted for, the transport to and from campus, and not forgetting the heavy artillery; cost. Frankly, I’d rather sit at home and watch films, but that doesn’t change the fact that the applications some of us make this year will not only affect us for the following three years, but potentially forever. Some of the closest friends will be made at university; in fact a relatively high percentage of couples will have met at university. You might leave with a degree and also a life partner to boot. Not to mention the fact that it will follow you on your CV for the rest of your life, along with your degree choice. All the more important then that we don’t choose wrong. 27,000 students dropped out last year, and according to the Telegraph, 32 percent said they might have chosen a different course if they’d had more information. It’s an expensive mistake to make, both in terms of money, and time spent being unhappy. The alternative to forget the whole kerfuffle and get yourself a job instead begins to look very appealing, and of course will get you a whole lot less debt. However, then you miss out on the student years, supposedly the best years of your life. Free from parental influence, but without the responsibilities of a job, living communally, training your mind, gaining confidence, discovering yourself and who you want to become. And drinking, a fair bit of drinking. And parties. But mostly self-discovery. I’m sure it’ll be worth it in the end… - Ella 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Conservatory comfort To make the most of your conservatory, it needs to be an ambient temperature all year round. Make your conservatory work for you with an insulated conservatory ceiling from Hobgate. Part of the appeal of having a conservatory is being able to bring the outside in during the summer months – but do you ever find that your garden room tends to be on the stifling side? This may have been an accepted downside of having a conservatory in days gone by, as the standard polycarbonate roof system used in many conservatories doesn’t insulate well even when expensive blinds are fitted. However, now there’s no need to put up with poor insulation thanks to a clever bit of engineering that will allow you to use your conservatory in comfort all year round.
The insulated conservatory ceiling, fitted by the expert team from Hobgate Insulated Conservatory Ceilings, will save you money on heating and air conditioning bills, while also making your conservatory feel like a proper, usable room in your home. Using the most thermally effective insulation, the team will fit SuperQuilt® - which comes with a lifetime guarantee – to the existing interior roof structure, and finish with plastering and optional decorating and lighting. The system allows you to save up to an incredible 80% of heat loss in the winter, and prevent uncomfortable heat build-up in
The new ceiling looks really smart, the conservatory remains bright and airy, and we have gained a room which we can now use all year round instead of just for a few weeks in the summer, and all at a very reasonable cost. We are happy to recommend conservatory roof insulation by Hobgate to anyone.” Sheila and Albert: Haxby the summer. Your conservatory really can feel like a part of your home and a room that you can use all year round without breaking the bank.
Is your conservatory too HOT in the summer and too COLD in the winter? Whatever the shape or style you won’t believe the difference an insulated conservatory ceiling will make to your conservatory. Save around 80% heat loss in the winter, and prevent uncomfortable heat build-up in the summer Save money on energy bills Reduce rain noise

THE LIFE LIST
really knows why.
HALLOWEEN HABITS
C
hildhood, as I recall, was marked by annual traditions - there was Christmas, New Year, Easter, the long, glorious summer break from school, and finally Halloween. When you’re an adult, it can seem like it’s only for the kids now, but those Halloween habits are still just as relevant when viewed from another angle.
1. Trick or Treat - strictly speaking, for grownups, this now comes with the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement in November. And sadly, if you are a saver, there are usually few treats.
4. Shops selling Christmas cards (to be fair they’ve probably been doing this since September and the Valentine cards are already in storage). 5. Carving pumpkins into lanterns - a great way to scare away your neighbour’s children. Often combined with sitting in the back room in the dark - a great way to save on electricity. 6. Telling scary stories - these often involve hospital visits, the car’s annual service, that last holiday where one of you was nearly caught short or the perils of online dating.
2. Bobbing for apples - a great way to test your teeth and gums. The winner is the person who finds an apple that has not been grown in a poly tunnel and which actually tastes of apple. 3. Bonfires - this ancient ritual involves sacrificing pallets and old furniture in order to undercook or cremate baked potatoes. No one dalby advert3 2103.pdf 05/07/2013

ost people we meet are baffled by their finances. Even those who think they’re sorted. They may have seen an adviser or bank years ago who’s left them high and dry. No wonder folk are brassed off with financial advice. Yet UK Government adviser, Carol Segeant said “We have known for a long time that managing your finances effectively leads to increased well-being and a better quality of life.” Research shows that individuals who do take financial advice: • have better pensions • worry less about financial stories in the press • feel more confident that they have everything in order • which leads to fewer sleepless nights
We’ve been helping clients achieve financial freedom and protect their family’s future for almost 30 years - and many of our clients have been with us from the beginning. COOL CROCHET C
rochet is making a big comeback. Crochet garments have been on display on catwalks around the world for a few years now and there are some fantastic new yarns and patterns available bringing crochet right into the 21st century. The comeback in crochet has been attributed to the economy and it is true that with inexpensive tools you can create wonderful effects with simple materials. The stitches are easy to learn and it is a relaxing way to fill those long winter evenings ahead. If you fancy giving crochet a try (or maybe a retry), help is at hand at Castaway Yarns in Haxby. New monthly crochet workshops, run by Nadine from the York School of Sewing, cater for both beginners and more advanced students. The next workshop is Saturday 12th October from 12 to 4pm and will cover how to make a foundation chain, double crochet and treble crochet and use all of these techniques to create a granny square. A crochet hook will be required but yarn and patterns are included as well as tea, coffee and cakes! Also throughout the month Castaway run 1 hour crochet clinics with Nadine, where people can drop in and pick her brains if they are stuck on a pattern or a stitch. Simply give Clare a quick call beforehand so she can let you know when Nadine will be in the shop but its usually from 11 to 12 before the workshops. Castaway Yarns is well stocked with a large range of exciting autumn and winter yarns in all colours and weights for both crochet and knitting work. And Clare Burborough, owner, is always on hand with a wealth of expert advice and guidance. Castaway Yarns is so much more than a knitting shop. It is a social hub for people to meet, share ideas and enjoy a common interest. There is a huge selection of wool and haberdashery essentials on the shelves including

Dry Mouth We all take having saliva for granted, sometimes it can be an annoyance if we produce too much from time to time, however not having enough can cause serious problems for our mouths and general wellbeing. COMMON CAUSES Age related reduction in by Christine Parker production of saliva, BDS (GDC 72136) Taking medication and drugs which can reduce salivary production and flow Systemic conditions such as Sjogrens syndrome which can dry up all the mucous membranes Dry mouth as a result of surgery or radiotherapy to the head and neck. SYMPTOMS You may feel you have insufficient saliva if you have to sip water when eating to allow yourself to chew and swallow more easily, or if you feel as though your tongue is sticking to the roof of your mouth when you wake, however symptoms can be more subtle. ASSESSMENT Your dentist should be able to rate your level of oral dryness by using a simple visual assessment, the Challacombe scale. TREATMENT Dry mouths can be much more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease and a preventative programme should be instituted to reduce its impact on your teeth. Saliva contains lubricants and antibodies to help maintain our oral health. Sometimes we can prescribe a saliva substitute to improve patient comfort. Other times medication can be tweaked to reduce its effect on saliva production. Your dentist should tailor a programme of treatment to help you maintain your oral health, changes to medication and systemic causes should be investigated by your medical practitioner.

Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen
32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us,
because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 22 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the

widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result.
Top Tips from a dental professional
Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.
Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need

TRAVEL
By Solange Hando
Paris Off The Beaten Track for the stage. But the planners went one step further, creating a hanging garden along the track with water features and lavender hedges and, at times, plunging views over the streets, heading all the way to the Bois de Vincennes.
B
eyond the grand boulevards and iconic monuments, the French capital has a few secret places known only to the Parisians. Who wants to join the crowds on the river Seine when Canal St Martin beckons with an air of countryside? Here, fishermen doze on the banks, boats glide through the locks and ancient bridges and traditional inns mingle their reflections. You can cruise on emerald waters, cycle or walk on the tow path or join the Tai Chi adepts moving in slow motion under the chestnut trees. Just a stone’s throw away, you reach La Villette, a futuristic park where the great Géode cinema sphere complements a Science Museum and Cité de la Musique. All around is a maze of elevated walkways and bright red follies sprouting like toadstools among immaculate lawns. There are curving stone seats with incorporated lights, fountains and jade-coloured pools, a bamboo grove and a

19th century cattle shed turned into a cultural venue. La Villette is only one of many parks in Paris barely visited by the tourists. On a sunny afternoon, families, young lovers and old folk flock to the scenic Buttes de Chaumont, well worth the climb for the views right across the capital to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You couldn’t dream of a more restful place with valleys and lawns and weeping willows tumbling down to the waterfall and man-made lake. But what can you do with a viaduct when trains no longer run on it? Paris is not just a glamorous face, it’s creative. Imagine scores of pink brick archways glowing in the light, stretching along a plane tree avenue, each one converted into a glass-fronted boutique or workshop, plus a pavement café or two, and you have the elegant ‘Viaduc des Arts’, a treasure trove of painted furniture and restored antiques, old maps, wrought iron, brass, paintings, sculptures, picture frames and period costumes hand-sewn
With its boating lake, its wild woodlands and floral gardens, Vincennes is the perfect escape. Here, the Parisians play pétanque, sunbathe in lush meadows or ramble through the forest, picking blackberries or looking out for squirrels and birds. The rural atmosphere of Vincennes is no secret but here and there in the capital are other village-like areas. Look out for the tree-lined rue de Mouzaia where bright façades recall the southern sun even on a winter day and villas with tiny rose gardens climb up the cobbled alleyways. Or make your way to the Belleville market, awash with exotic fruit, spices and herbs, Norwegian salmon, octopus, watches and T-shirts. The hill top reveals a lovely panorama over the city, framed by one of the last Parisian vineyards. Looking for culture? Try one of the unusual museums, romantic life, textiles, magic, or the house of Victor Hugo, author of Les Misérables, on Place des Vosges, then relax in the Luxembourg Gardens where men play chess in the shade and toddlers sail their boats on the ornamental pond. Flower beds bursting with colours meander along the paths while on the river bank, the Eiffel Tower looks down on the scene and a few Parisian secrets just off the beaten track.

NEW EARSWICK MUSICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS
MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET THE MUSICAL
O
h So, you don’t believe in Santa Claus? Well, we will return you to those happy innocent times when you were young enough to have confidence in the goodness of Christmas, the generosity of Santa and his journey all over the world on Christmas Eve. New Earswick Musical Society will take you to New York where a little girl discovers Santa working in the city. She needs to convince her mom that he exists and she has found him in Kris Kringle, a Santa Claus hired by Macy’s store. Kris Kringle decides that adults should be made to realise that Santa Claus was a very important character in the Christmas season and he was that very character. The worth of his claim is eventually decided in the city court. Miracle on 34th Street was a highly popular movie first shown in 1947. This warm tale was an excellent vehicle for Meredith Wilson to turn into a musical. He had already achieved great success with Music Man The musical first appeared on Broadway in 1963 under the title Here’s Love, but has reverted to Miracle on 34th Street. Full of music and lively dialogue this new, heartwarming show bounces along to a happy and all round satisfactory conclusion.

MOTORING
A Weekend with a Legend
By James Baggott, managing director of BlackballMedia. co.uk, an automotive services specialist
THE KNOWLEDGE Porsche 911 Turbo S Price: £130,791 Engine: 3.8-litre, turbo Power: 530bhp, 700Nm 0-60mph: 3.1s Max: 196mph
DRIVING 911 HUL
I
’d been looking forward to this moment for years. For some in the office too young to remember, it meant nothing – but for me it was a coming of age. Finally I’d be driving a Porsche with the famous 911 HUL number plate. I’ve been a motoring nut for years, spending money I often didn’t have on car magazines, long before I could even drive. And it was on those glossy pages that I became familiar with the famous plate. Owned by Porsche GB for decades it was the first private plate the firm acquired and ever since has taken pride of place on the Porsche press fleet Turbo models. Now it was my time to drive it. Here’s my week behind the wheel of Porsche’s fastest 997 edition – the 911 Turbo S with a very special moniker.
DAY ONE
It’s only you that cares – shouted one pre-pubescent member of the team as I explained, to yet another 911 admirer who clearly didn’t share my enthusiasm for six numbers 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
and letters, what the plate meant to car fans. Most people were more interested in the colour our test car had arrived in. Paint jobs make or break cars and the camouflage green our test car had arrived in was clearly splitting opinion. Still, it could have been painted pink for all I cared as what was sitting over the rear wheels was far more of interest to me. The 3.8-litre, turbo-charged lump produces a whopping 530bhp and 700Nm of torque thanks to a tweaked turbo output. The drive north to our photoshoot at Rockingham was one of the longest (traffic) but most enjoyable I’ve ever had.
DAY TWO
Photoshoot day at Rockingham and we’ve got 15 cars lined up for a series of tests. Also here is three times British superbike championship winner John Reynolds on the latest Suzuki GSX-R1000. He’s at our shoot to take on the Nissan Juke R (search for the video on YouTube) but it’s only fair we let him try his luck against the Porsche too…
With a 0-60mph sprint time of 3.1 seconds, the PDK automatic gearbox and launch control system mean that’s very achievable every time. Engage Sport Plus, floor the throttle with your foot on the brake, and the revs settle at a heady rpm. When you lift off the brake the car thunders towards the finish line in a cacophony of air sucking, turbo whooshing and tyres ripping chunks out of the asphalt. All I have to do is steer.
DAY THREE
Two tanks of fuel into the loan and I’m impressed the Turbo S is returning 26mpg. My old Focus ST never got any better than 23mpg on a long journey and considering this has such an almighty power output that’s very impressive. Today I’m heading into London for a meeting with the Queen. Well, I say meeting, I really mean a concert in her garden for the Coronation Festival. For what is essentially a rival to a Ferrari 458 or McLaren 12C, the Turbo S is fantastically well behaved in the clogged up capital. Visibility is excellent and although it’s got a low splitter at the front, speed humps aren’t really a problem nor tight underground and overpriced car

YORK • OCTOBER 2013 • ISSUE 95 parks. The drive back south is a magical one. London’s streets are a joy in the small hours of the morning and each traffic light gives me a chance to test the wife’s neck muscles.
DAY FOUR-SIX
It’s the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Porsche is headlining the event, and I can’t believe I’ve got the honour of driving 911 HUL to the south coast. It’s clear on the way there and back that the plate doesn’t just hold sway with me. I lose count of the number of phones I see trained on the Porsche, capturing pictures for tweets.
DAY SEVEN
Another business trip north beckons and my colleague and I decide to leave after the evening’s rush hour. Gosport to Chester – some 250 miles
– lay ahead and even at 9pm the digital temperature gauge is reading 25 degrees C. Hot tarmac and sticky tyres make the trip a delight. The seats get a little uncomfortable over long distance but apart from that the Turbo S is a competent tourer.
...never have I driven a car quite so intoxicating, quite so full of character and quite so mind-alteringly fast as the Turbo S It’s time for 911 HUL to return to Porsche. After a week behind the wheel of the monster I’m smitten. Yes, the ride is firm and the tyre noise a little intrusive. Granted the seats aren’t the most cosseting and the 997
interior is showing its age now the 991 has arrived. However, never have I driven a car quite so intoxicating, quite so full of character and quite so mind-alteringly fast as the Turbo S. The fact it was wearing one of the most iconic plates in motoring folklore simply made the whole experience all the more special.

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF ALFIE PART 3 AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF A DAY IN PRACTICE. Today I’m in trouble. This is my fault! Last night Phil finished work late so ordered an Indian takeaway, which he left on the kitchen side, whilst he locked the car. I had only meant to sniff it, perhaps taste a bit but it was just so good I ate it. All of it! Phil was not happy when he returned to find me amongst the empty foil trays, which I had also torn apart for good measure. Of course I tried to deny any involvement, to pretend there had never been a curry, sadly my ears had slipped in it and had turned a funny colour. I think had it not been for this, I would most definitely have got away with it.
Saturday 26th October 2013
Phil was very cross, which I only made worse when I tried to ingratiate myself by rubbing up against him and accidently rubbed my curry soaked ears on his new sofa. I slumped off to bed, promising to myself I would never be so bad again, and I meant it, I really did, I hated making Phil cross. Unfortunately this was not to be the case. I had woken with a start. I had known it was late as the house was quiet and bathed in darkness. My stomach was painful and grumbling. I felt apologetic but Phil needed to let me out. I had run upstairs and jumped on the bed and started to lick Phil’s face to alert him to my needs. This was not gratefully received and I found myself in the hallway with the bedroom door shut firmly behind me. Feeling sorry for myself I curled up on the new sofa, which had instantly made me feel better as it still smelt of Phil. It was on this sofa that I was then sick. Very sick. This is where Phil found me this morning as he came downstairs muttering about bad dogs and no sleep. The journey to work was a tense one. I sat in the foot-well quietly and did not react even when Phil

YORK • OCTOBER 2013 • ISSUE 95 bought a bacon sandwich and proceeded to eat it in front of me. At work I silently greeted the others then laid on my bed in disgrace. Later that morning the girls let me into the garden. After pottering around for a bit I got bored, it was then that I found the hole in the fence. Following a smell, I found some feathered friends who seemed to want to play. It was so exciting watching them run around squawking and flapping. We did have fun together! Before long hearing the commotion the land-owner appeared. I knew I was in trouble when she rang the Vets and told them to retrieve me. I slipped back through the hole in the hedge and back to the practice. Phil was out on a horse call, so I climbed sleepily back onto my bed, happy in the knowledge that he would have forgiven me by now. I was where he had left me and there was no evidence of today’s adventures. I smirked at how clever I was getting. Little did I know that I had chicken feathers stuck in my fur until Phil returned to work that evening………….. www.facebook.com/alfiestale Celia Carr, RVN Station House Vets

POOR BUNNY
T
his sad looking cat is a rather special young man who goes by the name of Bunny. As you can see Bunny is not looking his best at the moment, he has a head full of large scabs and some quite nasty scars on his body; he is even missing the end of his tail. Bunny was brought in to York Cats Protection some weeks ago after he had been found on the streets with terrible injuries, probably caused by someone throwing some boiling hot liquid on him, causing awful scalding and no doubt much distress for this gentle cat. We don’t know who did this or anything else about this brave cat’s past, but with your help we can certainly make sure his future life is far happier and safer. Despite his ill treatment Bunny is fortunately still a trusting fellow and has not lost his love of humans. He is always happy when someone comes along to say hello to him greeting
his visitors with a friendly head nudge and is soon purring as he enjoys a tickle under his chin. Bunny is making good progress and will soon be available to be adopted and no doubt he is eager get himself settled into a new home and is looking forward to being spoilt rotten! We are sure that Bunny will easily fit into most home environments as he is such a placid and easy going cat. Hopefully Bunny’s new start to life is just around the corner, if you would like to be part of it please do not hesitate to contact us. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. SUPPORTING CAST A few climbers are self-clingers and don’t need a special support system when grown against a fence or wall; Virginia creeper and Hydrangea
PLANTING DISTANCE Climbers won’t thrive if they don’t receive enough water at the base. The ‘rain shadow’ created by the house roof and the drying effect of the wall’s foundations can make the soil close-by extremely dry so plant a minimum of 45cm (18in) away from
O F RE W C AS YC TE LE IS D
Climbing plants, especially those with flamboyant flowers or fantastic foliage can transform a garden and offer a whole new planting opportunity, as your garden literally goes upwards and takes a vertical climb.
EASY ACCESS If you use trellis as a support on a wall, it can be attached to wooden battens which are fixed to the wall using rawl plugs. Use a series of hinges to attach one edge of the trellis to the batten, and a few hooks to allow you to raise or lower the trellis for when you need to maintain the wall.

>> GARDENING CONT... the base of the wall and fork in plenty of well-rotted bulky organic matter before planting too. TRAIN IT WELL If the climber is quite small, it may need to be trained in the right direction. A short bamboo cane, can be angled from the base of the plant to the vertical surface, allowing you to tie in the stems and edge them towards the support. Once the climber has reached the wall, the enlarging network of stems may become congested if left to its own devices, so actively train the stems to grow in the direction you need them to. EXTRA CARE Climbers planted against a wall will need extra TLC if they’re to look their best. Make watering them top priority. Apply a good, bulky organic mulch to a depth of about 8cm (3in) or so all around the rooting area, but take care to avoid the mulch coming in to direct contact with the stems.
to clothe an arbour. You may need to install some supporting wires here too, so go for galvanised wires and sturdy vine-eyes as fixings. Choosing a scented climber or two will add to the charm of a cosy arbour or archway. CLEVER COMBINATIONS If the surface that you want to plant up is big enough, try to use climbers that flower in different seasons as, chosen carefully, the plants you use will increase the period for which the arch, pergola, arbour, wall or fence, looks its best. BARE ANKLES Many climbers do have a habit of becoming a bit bare at the base, especially after they’ve been in place for a few years. Try some seasonal bedding plants around the base, or plant a small and attractive shrub a little further away to hide the bare stems. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com where you can sign up for her free newsletter.

Give your carpets, upholstery and mattresses a new lease of life
P
eter and Anita Wilkinson at Smart-Dry are celebrating a successful first year in business. Smart-Dry specialises in cleaning any carpets without the long drying time or messy shampoo process of traditional methods of cleaning. They also offer upholstery, leather and vinyl cleaning and have recently added a new service to get rid of the Mite-Y problem in your mattresses! The solutions used for cleaning are environmentally-friendly, neutral-based and shampoo-free and can actually help your carpet stay cleaner for longer. The best news about Smart-Dry’s methods is that they use around a tenth of the amount of water used by traditional cleaning techniques, which means drying time is slashed.
Sleeping with the enemy the Mite-Y problem The average bed can contain over 100,000 dust mites! The new Smart-Dry mattress cleaning service is designed to kill and eliminate up to 99% of dust mites and bed bugs leaving your mattress fresh, clean, odour free and dry. Dust mites are a major cause of asthma and allergy-related conditions. They are microscopic bugs that live primarily on dead skin cells shed from humans. It is not the mite itself that causes the problems but rather its droppings! We spend about one third of our lives in bed and dust mites love and thrive in warm humid conditions, making you mattress the ideal place to thrive. Dust mites don’t bite (unlike bed bugs), have 8 legs, no eyes, are translucent and are too small for the naked eye to see. Sleep tight tonight and give Smart-Dry a call now and get rid of the Mite-Y problem in your home.
Smart-Dry work in homes and businesses in the York area, including the surrounding villages. As a local, family firm they are proud to offer a good quality, friendly service. For more information about getting your carpets, upholstery and mattresses cleaner, give Anita and Peter a call on 01904 769327.

CELEBRATE A CENTENARY WITH
ST ANDREWS
W
e are celebrating the centenary of St Andrew’s this November. The original part of St. Andrew’s (shown in the picture) was built in November 1913. This report was printed in the York Herald November 8th 1913. THE NEW MISSION CHURCH AT NEW EARSWICK St Andrew’s Mission Church at New Earswick which is to be dedicated today by the Archbishop of York [Cosmo Lang] has been erected on the high ground on the Huntington road side of the Model Village, which it overlooks. The church is small and plain but it will be comfortably fitted and fully equipped for its purpose.’ The church was built next to a station on land purchased from St Martin’s Coney St church. The vicar at the time Rev’d Edwin Storrs Fox had responded to the need for an additional place of worship due to the building of New Earswick Village. Over the years the area around the church became more industrialised with a saw mill, leather works, Sessions printers and Eborcraft. The area around the church experienced an increase in 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
We are holding a variety of events over 2013/2014 to celebrate our 100 years beginning with a week of events in November 2013. housing and as a result an extention to the original building was constructed in 1938. The congregation continued to increase, particularly the Sunday School and in 1964 the church hall and new entrance were built. Over the next 25 years the church was refurbished to suit the needs of a changing congregation, as industry declined, the railway closed and more housing and schools were built. To mark the 100th anniversary another building project has been launched to improve the church and car park externally as well as completely refurbish the hall, kitchen and toilet facilities. The building is heavily used by diverse community groups as well as an increasing congregation and the buildings need to be brought up to 21st century standards.
We are holding a variety of events over 2013/2014 to celebrate our 100 years beginning with a week of events in November 2013 with a launch service on November 3rd with the new Archdeacon, Rev’d Cannon Sarah Bullock and culminating with a visit by Archbishop Sentamu in June 2014. We have begun a memory project asking the many people who have come into St. Andrew’s buildings over the years to write down their experiences either on paper, dropping them into the church office at St Andrew’s or on line at office@ huntingtonparish.org.uk. In addition we are holding an exhibition of maps and pictures showing the changing face of Huntington and the church over the years. Please come along and take a fresh look at St Andrew’s we’d love to see you.
