W

elcome to our October edition.

If you have something special happening in November or December, please let us know as soon as possible as the magazines always fill up quickly at this time of year. Yes the ‘C’ word will be mentioned in the office this week!

I always love autumn. I think it’s my favourite time of the year with its beautiful colours, cooler evenings and weather which has not quite slipped into winter. Why not get out and about and take in the change in colours and light. It seems everyone has come back from their holidays reinvigorated and we’ve had to literally lever everything in to the magazine this month! So much so in fact that I’m afraid we’ve had to lose our local group listings. We’ve included those that had updates but everything else can still be found on our website at www.thehandymag.co.uk (under community) or if you really need some local information, feel free to give Nicky a call in the office – she is the font of all knowledge about our local area!

For children who face adversity in their lives, growing up can be especially tough but thanks to local charity The Island, vulnerable children can receive the support they need to help them on their way. Read more on page 10. There are lots of brilliant shows coming to York this month from the great fun Acorn Antiques, The Musical by York Musical Theatre Company to La Voce, pop opera at its best at York Opera House. Details are all in this month’s edition. Well done to Ms Rawle (Strensall) and Mrs Nutbrown (Huntington) for winning our July and August competitions. Until next month....

Enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable children and young people in York The Island is a registered charity in York which works with vulnerable children and young people between the ages of 8 to 13, or 8 to 18 if the young person has a disability. The charity links the children and young people with fully-trained volunteer mentors, who, by means of weekly activity sessions, offer one-to-one support outside of school and the family home for a full year. This consistent space and time offered to the children and young people on a weekly basis helps them to address problems and to work through other difficulties. For children who face adversity in their lives (such as family breakdown or disability), growing up can be especially tough. Having

someone who will meet with them regularly, build up a relationship, have fun and provide help with making positive choices can have a life-long influence. The Island currently has three areas of operation: • One-to-one mentoring with volunteer mentors. • North Island and South Island are two fortnightly clubs for children and young people awaiting a volunteer mentor • School Based Mentoring in Primary Schools during term time

This volunteer service is a series of projects for the community provided by the community, offering mentoring opportunities using volunteers from the local universities and the community. Like many charities, The Island is dependent on donations, legacies and fundraising events for selecting, training and supervising volunteer mentors, to ensure they continue this vital and unique work in York, which since being formed back in 2007 has mentored over 400 children and young people. To find out more please contact them on 01904 628449, email enquiries@ theislandyork.org or visit www.theislandyork.org

MEMORIES BY MARY MAHON

Local Carpet Cleaning Service

Smart-Dry of York Professional Upholstery Cleaning

Our lives are in constant turbulence; currently many students are moving into their new university lives, people move jobs, move house, move schools. Change in life is inevitable, so one way of creating comfort is through a sense of familiarity. Memories are a vital part of humanity - they’re the sole reason we have advanced so far! Yet whilst remembering something seems so simple, the mechanisms of memories are vastly complex… Often the memories that appear so vivid to us are the ones we don’t want to remember. Unfortunately, experiences of fear can linger with us and years later people can still be haunted by childhood fears that plague their dreams, or traumatising moments of public humiliation remain. So why does our brain simply not erase or diminish these miserable memories and store the moments that gave us such a rush of positive emotion? Our memories are prioritised by emotion, so memories with strong feelings are resilient in our minds regardless of whether they’re positive or negative. Our personal memories are divided and organised into ‘chapters’ in our brain - essentially creating a cellular storybook of our life. Yet whilst our brains are very good at organisation, scientists have also recognised that false memories are very easy to implant. In theory, our entire lives could subconsciously be reinvented! If a seed of an idea is subconsciously planted in our mind, or an uncertain question is asked, our brain will develop it or invent details, coming up with new ‘false’ memories. The more we recall memories, the more distorted from the truth they become through being remembered slightly different each time – almost like a game of Chinese whispers! However, whilst false memories may seem like a scary concept, and our old, painful memories of loss, humiliation, rejection or fear may still affect us to this day, it is important to remember that your memories are what make you who you are. Bad or good, happy or sad, real or invented, all our experiences and memories affect us, so embrace them all, because they’ve helped to make you who you are today. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

‘BOMB HAPPY’ N

RAILWAY IN WARTIME PLAY

ew for 2016, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is working with York Normandy Veterans and Everwitch Theatre to create an innovative new verbatim play as part of the annual Railway in Wartime event. The play will be based on the first hand experiences of D-Day and the subsequent battles to liberate France by the last five living members of York Normandy Veterans. ‘Bomb Happy’ will be performed on the 12th, 13th and 14th October at 8pm at Pickering Station, Platform 2, in an original 1930’s historic railway carriage. This extraordinary new play, built from testimonies of the last remaining York Normandy Veterans, explores through first hand experiences how at the tender age of 18 years these ordinary young conscripts found themselves part of the Normandy Landings. “The noise was horrific. We used to say we were bomb happy…after several months of constant shelling, you begin to get-it’s not shell shock – but we used to say we were bomb happy. And I could just feel that starting in myself, and I had to get out…” (excerpt from play). One such veteran, George Meredith, volunteered at the NYMR for 10 years restoring wagons, and has this month been presented with the Legion D’Honneur medal by senior personnel of the French Armed Forces, honouring his bravery. Aged just sixteen years old when he signed up for the army, George explains, “My friends who were eighteen went and signed up, and I didn’t want to be left behind! We wanted to fight for our country. The York Normandy Veterans are all getting older – there are only five of us left now. So it’s important to us that this project happens so that younger generations will know about our experiences.” Chris Price, General Manager at the railway said “The play is of vital importance as it documents what a great contribution the Normandy veterans have made to all our lives. The play uses the actual words of the veterans thus giving first-hand accounts of D-Day and battles in France, Belgium and Holland”.

of D-Day and the subsequent battles to liberate Europe, together with archived interviews held at York Explore. Tickets cost £15 per person, contact Customer Services on 01751 472508 and nymr.co.uk/ wartime/events-schedule/. This is a static 60-minute performance (It does not include a rail journey). RV Roger Apple Weekend Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th October 2016 10am to 5pm, with activities and demonstrations throughout the weekend. Hot drinks and tasty snacks will be available, as well as apple juicing demonstrations (and tastings!) from the Kirkbymoorside Fruit Group.

Y

ou know the apples that you buy at the supermarket? Those, where there are usually only the same 4 or 5 varieties all year round, many of which are imported from across the globe? Well, instead of that, if you visit the RV Roger plant centre in Pickering on the 8th and 9th October, you will be able to join in celebrating the richness and diversity of British grown fruit, in their annual Apple Weekend. The plant centre will have displays of more than 200 fruit, including many rare and heritage varieties, and there’ll be fruit experts on hand, who you can talk to about all aspects of choosing fruit to grow in your garden, so that you can have apples you can really taste!. Admission to the Plant Centre and the apple displays will be free, and the gates will be open from

There will be the opportunity to talk to fruit experts from RV Roger, who can help you choose the right type of fruit trees for your garden or orchard, and select the varieties that best suit your taste. In addition, you can watch demonstrations of how to prune your fruit trees to get the best out of them, and get advice on what to do about pests and problems. The old adage of ‘An apple a day, keeps the doctor away’ has been strengthened recently by research from Oxford University. Apples contain lots of Vitamin C which aids the immune system, and phenols which help to reduce cholesterol. They also reduce tooth decay by cleaning one’s teeth and killing off bacteria. And, although nine in 10 of us do manage to eat at least one portion a day, Dr Adam Briggs and his colleagues from the British Heart Foundation’s Health Promotion Research Group at Oxford University, say that we would all benefit from eating more. By their calculations, if adults of all ages ate an extra portion of fruit or veg a day, as many as 11,000 heart-disease related deaths could be averted each year. Apple celebrations have been growing in popularity since Apple

Day was initiated by Common Ground 25 years ago. Common Ground describe the day as a way of celebrating and demonstrating that variety and richness matter to a locality. Common Ground has used the apple as a symbol of the physical, cultural and genetic diversity we should not let slip away. In linking apples with their place of origin, they hope that orchards will be recognized and conserved for their contribution to local distinctiveness, including the rich diversity of wild-life they support. And RV Roger hope to encourage this by stocking more than 200 varieties of apple, pear, quince, mulberry and plum, including many local and regional varieties not found anywhere on the supermarket shelf!

Highlights of the Apple Weekend will include:

• A display of more than 200 varieties of fruit • An opportunity to watch or take part in pruning demonstrations, • And, to get advice from experts on the growing of fruit • Books and tools available • Apple identification • Apple juicing and sampling from the Kirkbymoorside Fruit Group

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and

The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After over 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can

The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. THE BEST QUALITY SEASONED LOGS AND MUCH MORE... AT DALBY FIREWOOD

CUSTOMER RATING

Dalby Firewood :: Logo 1

“Quality is our middle name,” says Joseph Woodhead of Dalby Firewood. “Whether you’re looking for firewood, outdoor pizza ovens or hot tubs, we supply and deliver the best.”

delivery drop-off vehicles fit down most driveways and the delivery team will leave the logs in the bag without mess or stress. Crate deliveries are also arranged at a time to suit.

Based at Low Marishes between Malton and Pickering, Joseph said: “We deliver to London, Leeds, Hull and all over the UK from our North Yorkshire base and delivery is FREE to the North Yorkshire area.”

Pizza Ovens and Hot Tubs

As one of the UK’s most reputable suppliers of kiln-dried ash and seasoned hardwood logs, Dalby Firewood consistently supplies top-grade timber to their customers with their friendly, efficient service. All of the wood supplied by Dalby Firewood is certified with Woodsure, the UK’s only woodfuel quality assurance scheme. The scheme comprehensively checks wood fuel producers to ensure that they produce and supply wood fuel to the correct standard. To ensure perfect burn quality, Dalby Firewood also tests for moisture before despatch and firewood is delivered bone-dry and ready to burn. Joseph explained: “Seasoning means drying the wood out until it’s in prime burning condition. Freshly felled and chopped hardwood has about 50% moisture content. Trying to burn wood in this condition is harmful to the environment because it produces creosote, which can cause chimney fires. We season and dry our logs until the moisture content is 20% or less. This makes them 60% more energy efficient than at the time of felling, and guarantees an efficient, carbon neutral fuel that burns with a clean, bright flame. No seasoning, no roaring fire! “Our hardwood logs - eucalyptus, ash, birch and beech - are supplied and stored separately ensuring our customers receive the best quality logs for their purposes.” Delivery is made within five working days, dependent on location and the time of year as the team are generally busier during the colder months. Hot tubs are beautifully handcrafted in either spruce, larch or ThermoWood with stainless steel and all tubs come with a free bag of kiln dried hardwood. By tapping into the earth’s naturally renewable resources, Pickering-based Peak Power Systems can help you be kinder to the environment while heating your home and helping you reduce your energy costs. Peak Power Systems can help their customers cut their energy bills and take full advantage of government- backed schemes, which offer financial incentives for those who upgrade their old heating system in favour of new, efficient, cost effective systems, that are also cheaper to run.

The Feed-In Tariff for solar panels is well known and has proved to be a good incentive for many homeowners. The recentlyintroduced Renewable Heat Incentive, or RHI, for Heat Pumps and Biomass boilers, means that BIOMASS these renewable BOILERS FROM energy heating systems are rapidly £10,000 INC VAT becoming the best FULLY FITTED option for heating many homes and businesses. YORK • OCTOBER 2016 • ISSUE 127 Biomass boilers are fuelled by wood pellets, delivered directly to your fuel store. Heat pumps extract heat from the air, or the ground, and heat your home without the need to burn any fuel. Like a traditional gas or oil-fired boiler, these systems provide heating and hot water for the property concerned. “The first thing to do” says Debbie, “is to contact us and ask one of our fullytrained surveyors to visit your house to assess your heating requirements.

HEAT PUMPS FROM £5500 INC VAT, FULLY FITTED

“These heating systems will run traditional radiators or underfloor heating, effectively replacing your current boiler. “There’s an easy online form for registration of new heating systems, after which payments will commence. These payments run for seven years, and in many cases will pay substantially more than the cost of the system. “Commercial buildings can also receive the RHI, but the registration system is different for commercial customers.” Although the Feed in Tariff has

now been reduced, you can still expect a return of between 7%10%, so as well as benefiting from free electricity, it is also still a very good investment. Peak Power Systems encourage new customers to ask for their free initial survey, as this would indicate which type of renewable energy is right for them. Advice is free and impartial, and we are always happy to offer advice over the telephone. Renewable energy systems are also suitable for schools, businesses, farms and small holdings, Take the heat out of moving from gas, LPG, electricity, coal or oil and give Peak Power Systems a call on 01751 476989 or visit www. peakpowersystems. co.uk

Physical prints are still an integral aspect of digital photography according to Paul Crick Fine Art Photographer. Paul says that traditionally photographers, including how he started himself many years ago, recorded images onto film stock, which needed to be developed and printed in order for the image to be viewed. In this digital age you are probably more used to looking at images on your smart phone, computer screen or sharing low quality images on social media sites; this has largely become the way that people think of photographs these days. Paul thinks that a lot of people have lost sight of how impressive a large well printed and framed image looks on the wall. This fine art image is 90cm x 120cm or 4’ x 3’ in old money, it makes a statement focal point and looks stunning on any wall. Although Vivien and Paul do work in colour, the black and white fine art prints that they specialise in are simply brilliant. These fine art prints are dependant upon the quality of the lighting to create the light and shade, which creates the depth and contrast in the images. To facilitate this their well equipped photographic studio is completely blacked out, ensuring total control over the lighting.

Once the images have been developed they also need to be printed and framed to a very high standard; this sort of quality is not found with a high street printing service, so to ensure the quality of their prints, they have invested in a large format photo printer and do their own in- house fine art printing. They get their frames made with a local craftsman and mount the images into them themselves to ensure the quality and confidentiality - but you would expect nothing less from a skilled and professional photographer. Digital images are fine for their intended purpose, you will receive some together with the video compilation that Paul puts together of your shoot. These are placed on the memory stick that is positioned in the bottom of your luxurious hand made presentation box. The box also contains the printed physical images that are mounted in strut mounts as part of their photographic packages. Please see: www.pcphotographics. co.uk for full details, or call Paul or Vivien on 01653 668110 to discuss your requirements.

POPPLETON COMMUNITY RAILWAY NURSERY

oppleton Railway Nursery would like to invite you to attend their Autumn Open Day on Saturday 1st October from 10am until 3pm.

around the nursery. The model railway will be in operation in the Museum that houses our archives and photographic collection; which will also be available to view.

This year has seen the 75th anniversary of the nursery, having been established in 1941 to grow plants and vegetables for the local stations and railway workers as part of the war effort.

Volunteers will be available to show you around the site and answer any questions you might have. There will be a sale of surplus stock; this includes furniture, tools, pots and other gardening equipment that the nursery has collected over the years. Perennials, shrubs, bedding plants, winter planters and baskets will be available to buy on the day. All profits will be ploughed back into the nursery in order to continue its work.

Visitors to the nursery will be able to discover the history of the site and learn about the origins and uses of many of the buildings, the narrow gauge railway, wagons and trucks that are used to transport plants, compost and equipment

Tea coffee and homemade cake will be on sale for you to enjoy during your visit. Please support the nursery on this day so that it can continue with its aims to restore the site and keep up its work with local health agencies providing a safe place for people to volunteer who are recovering from physical and mental health issues. It is hoped that the nursery will continue to develop and provide a valuable resource for the local community.

LIGHT UP - LOCK UP By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 As summer comes to an end and the nights draw in, it is important to consider your home security. Many steps that you can take are obvious but put simply, if you remember to “Light Up – Lock Up”, then you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. A home in darkness is potentially a target for an opportunistic thief. If you are going out during the evening leave a light on in the property to give the impression that somebody is home as a deterrent. Leaving a light on for a few hours whilst you are out will only cost you a few pence and is far preferable to returning home to find that you have been the victim of a crime. Timer switches are inexpensive and easy to use and are readily available in DIY Stores and online. Locking up is something that everybody should do although a large number of burglaries are committed through an unlocked door. An opportunistic thief will try your door and if it is unlocked could enter your property and steal items that we often leave in the hallway or very close to the front door. This only takes a couple of seconds and is easily prevented.

We all need to try and make sure that we do not leave items on display that will be a temptation for a thief. An expensive phone or laptop charging next to a window is a temptation therefore by removing this item from view you massively reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Your local police teams are actively marking property across York. Events are advertised on Twitter and this is a great opportunity to have your valuables permanently marked using the Dot Peen equipment. This is a great deterrent and should you ever be the victim of a theft makes the chances of your property being returned to you much greater. You can also follow the online form on the North Yorkshire Police website to request an Officer attend to mark your property or alternatively contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will be happy to arrange this for you. You can also receive updates and information by signing up to Community Messaging at www.nycm.co.uk 62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

Tools of the Trade By Pippa Greenwood

With the arrival of autumn, there is plenty of maintenance work needed in the garden. Using the right equipment will ensure that jobs are completed as easily and quickly as possible. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as you can afford. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. Ensure the metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. It is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Next decision: stainless steel or coated steel? Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but they are pricey. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them periodically and at the end of each season, they last well. You will need a hoe for weeding between small plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Sharpen your hoe regularly and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings.

allows you weed between fairly closely spaced crops. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small red-handled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Finally, if the tools carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when and where you bought it. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pullout EasyTunnels, biocontrols, signed books and lots more.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TRAVEL Vatican City

By Solange Hando

when he was just 25 - to the illustrious Sistine Chapel.

M

ost of us know what the Vatican looks like but when you first set eyes on St Peter’s dome at the far end of an avenue festooned in olive trees and obelisks, it simply takes your breath away. Rising to 136 metres, all silvery blue, it holds your gaze and you hardly notice the white line as you cross the border into the Vatican State. Then, suddenly, the view opens up on St Peter’s Square, where broad semi-circular colonnades topped by 140 statues welcome the world with open arms. Claiming just 44 hectares on the west bank of the Tiber and a population of around 800, Vatican City is the world’s smallest state and the only one where men can vote but not women, though some hold a Vatican passport. Created by the Lateran Treaty signed with Italy in 1929, it employs over 2,000 people, among them the Swiss guards who still wear full regalia on special occasions. Traditions are

strong but Pope Francis turned down the Papal Palace for a more modest dwelling, while in this ‘Jubilee Year’ millions of pilgrims are expected to pass through the ‘Holy Door’, open only every 25 years. Pilgrims or tourists, the basilica leaves no one untouched with its 186 metre long interior draped in chapels, relics, tombs, statues, medallions and other treasures. One barely knows which way to turn but pride of place goes to the dome soaring above St Peter’s tomb and the papal altar with its canopy of twisted bronze columns sculpted by Bernini in the 17th century. Bernini also designed St Peter’s Square but work had started on the basilica in 1506 on the site of an earlier church. It took around 120 years to complete with plans redesigned along the way by Michelangelo, then aged 72. He didn’t live to see completion but you feel his presence all around, from the magnificent dome and the beautiful marble Pieta - the only work he ever signed, sculpted

In the late 15th century Pope Sixtus IV began to embellish the chapel, now named after him, commissioning some of the best Renaissance artists to decorate the walls with scenes of the Old and New Testaments. The ceiling was blue with gold stars until 1508, when Julius II ordered Michelangelo to paint the 800 square metres of vaulted surface. From the Creation to the Fall from Grace and the Last Judgement on the wall, these powerful frescoes send shivers down your spine, restored in their bright original colours and almost threedimensional. Tourists gaze in awe, as no doubt do the red-caped cardinals when they gather in the chapel to elect a new Pope. But to reach the chapel which is part of the Papal Palace, tourists must first pass through the Vatican Museums, where sumptuous galleries display precious items gathered over the centuries, including rare books and ancient manuscripts. There is so much to see that the last ticket is sold two hours before closing time. But after such overwhelming splendour, climbing up to the dome offers plenty of fresh air and unrivalled views: St Peter’s Square at your feet with its obelisk, colonnades and statues, the long avenue leading to the castle of Sant’ Angelo, glowing honey-coloured in the setting sun and beyond the river, Rome, the eternal city, spreading as far as you can see towards the darkening hills.

FIRST DRIVE

By James Baggott

Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav Previously seen as the teenager that refused to grow up, the Renault Clio celebrates its 25th birthday this year – and with a host of new styling and design cues, could this be the most mature Clio yet?

What is it?

What’s it like to drive?

This longer and wider Clio, with its sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. The car’s agility and body control is improved, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor.

Originally launched in 2012, this is Renault’s facelifted fourth-generation Clio. Mechanical upgrade comes with the new 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel powertrain, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai, and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine.

Verdict

Renault has poured a lot of resources into styling, reprofiled bumpers and an LED light signature, while C-shaped daytime running lights can be specified on certain models. Cabin quality has improved significantly, with new upholstery, matt chrome trim and soft-touch materials – no more scratchy plastics to be found here.

The facelift does well to refresh the product and keep it relevant. But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon.

Renault claims the Clio is more versatile and mature than its predecessor, but with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we feel the carmaker is shoehorning itself into the more upmarket end of the B-segment.

With 30 different colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’. What’s under the bonnet? The pokey dCi 110 diesel powerplant is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, providing 108 bhp. 0-60mph takes 11.19 seconds, and top speed is 121mph.

What’s the spec like?

Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is extensive, with an updated sound and infotainment system and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard. However, the new diesel engine is only available in this top-level trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the pre-existing powertrains. The basic spec Clio starts from £10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.

Any rivals?

There are a host of affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more premium experience can opt for the Audi A1, which the Renault is no match for.

It is estimated that approximately 45 per cent of dogs become stressed and fearful while fireworks are going off, yet many owners are unaware of how to help their pets with firework fears and the precautions that can be taken to help them cope with their fear of loud noises. Here are some hints and tips to help keep your pets happy during the fireworks season: 1. Provide a den or hiding place for your pets 2. Use an Adaptil® for dogs or Feliway® for cats diffuser as close to the den or hiding place as possible, or where your pets spends most of their time 3. Keep dogs and cats inside during fireworks and check that their microchip is up to date 4. Walk dogs early in the evening before fireworks start 5. Ensure windows, doors and cat flaps remain closed during the firework season to both prevent pets escaping and reduce the noise 6. Ensure your cats have access to enough litter trays during the firework season, especially if you’re keeping them inside 7. Provide distractions in the form of new toys and chews. Draw curtains and put the TV or music on to mask any noise 8. Do not punish your pets! This will only make them more distressed 9. Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off 10. Continue to use Adaptil or Feliway after the party or fireworks season ends. Prepare hiding places and plug in diffusers the week before fireworks start and do give us a call to discuss your concerns. Consider your small pets and horses too, using blankets or increasing the depth of their bedding for pets to hide in and checking whether there are any displays near where your horses are kept, and bringing them in where necessary. For further information on how to prepare your pets for the firework season, please call Station House Vets on 01653618303 and visit www.adaptil.com/uk or http://www.feliway. com/uk www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 73

LUNGWORM

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

The lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated.

dog eats slugs and snails, but is not showing any symptoms, arrange a check up as a precaution. Not all worming products are effective against this particular parasite

Slugs and snails carry the lungworm larvae, and dogs can become infected when they accidentally (or purposefully) eat these common garden pests whilst rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys.

Lungworm & cats

The lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum is now endemic throughout much of the UK.

The signs of lungworm

Lungworm infections can result in a number of different signs, which may easily be confused with other illnesses, but improved detection methods including blood test and poo sampling mean more and more cases are now being confirmed. Some dogs don’t initially show visible signs of infection but there are a few things to look out for. If your dog is displaying any of the signs below, consult your veterinary surgeon immediately. Coughing, tiring easily, excessive bleeding from even minor wounds, nose bleeds, paleness around eyes and gums, weight loss, reduced appetite, sickness and diarrhoea, depression, lethargy and sometimes seizures (fits). Some dogs will happily ignore a snail or slug, but many will want to investigate. Dogs have plenty of opportunities to come into contact with slugs and snails on walks. They hide in grass or under objects left in the garden, and seek out areas of moisture, such as outdoor water bowls, puddles and ponds. You can never be sure where they are lurking, but spring and autumn are peak times for slug and snail activity.

Cats can become infected with another type of lungworm (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus). However, infections seem to be rare and the outcome tends to be not as severe as in dogs. If you are worried that your cat may be showing symptoms similar to those described for dogs (particularly coughing), speak to your vet.

Lungworm & humans

The lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is not known to infect humans. However, dogs and cats can carry roundworms, which can cause diseases in people, so make sure you keep your pet’s parasite protection programme up-to-date.

Prevention & treatment

Treatment is available and can result in full recovery, but as this parasite can be fatal it is important to consider prevention. Preventative products are available and with regular use prevention is easy to achieve. Your veterinary surgeon can recommend a parasite control programme for your dog. If your

After a long and troublesome building project York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Rd is finally open again! Open daily between 11am & 3pm with plenty of cats waiting to find loving new homes. Edwina & Catrina are looking for a lucky break and a new start. These 5 month old sisters are very shy with new people and will require new owners with lots of patience and understanding. Luckily they are still only young and we are confident that given time and lots of TLC it won’t be too long before they start to come out of their shells and become much more sociable and inquisitive! Call the Centre on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york.cats.org.uk for more details 76 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Susie and Lucky are quite nervous cats here in the centre, looking for a quiet home with no young children. Once settled in a home we are sure they will make lovely pets. They really need a loving family to give them the tlc they deserve. Marmalade really is a sweet and friendly girl with an excellent nature. She could possibly live with another calm dog and could live with junior school age children. Marmalade loves people so much she doesn’t like being left alone so would be best in a home with people around most of the day. A quiet home with patient people to help gain her confidence would be ideal.
