elcome to our October edition…

Did you know that 1st – 5th October is National Work Life Week? It’s a week supported by the Working Families Charity when we can focus on how employees and employers can improve their work-life balance. As someone who regularly works at weekends (as I’m currently doing writing this editors letter!) I’ve juggled work and home life for years – probably not always very well. I remember when I first started the Handy Mags, I worked around my young children and frequently felt guilty – even getting them to help me with work so I could spend more time with them. Now they’re older, I still find it difficult to actually spend time away from work and, after long school holidays, it’s a constant topic in our office discussions. Fitting work around family life is a huge challenge. We all know that working long hours is bad for us – never mind the slouching at a computer for endless hours and not getting any exercise, what about snacking on unhealthy food between meals? According to research, half of parents feel their worklife balance causes stress and one in ten is ready to resign. Seven out of ten parents work at home in the evenings or weekends due to increasing workloads, the organisational culture and/or their manager’s attitude. Basically, it’s not a balance at all! There has been so much about mental health issues in the news recently and anything we can do to reduce stress has got to be a good thing. So this autumn I’m going to try turning off my phone and emails in the evenings, go home on time and spend time outdoors enjoying the changing autumn colours, or, when the weather turns, simply spend evenings at home wrapped up in a warm jumper and slippers doing something ‘creative’!

In the office, we’re looking forward to our trip to see Carmen at York Theatre Royal (cover photo). We’ve never been to a ‘proper’ opera so we’re expecting to be moved to tears like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman! It is a performance by local amateur company York Opera and we’re very much looking forward to it!

Short Story The Nervous Goldfish

“Are you Joan?” A breathless young man in a cagoule approached with a small dog in tow. “Yes.” Joan, about to walk into the dentists, was caught off guard. “I’ve found your dog.” He thrust the lead into her hand, before sprinting off down the path. “Thank you,” she called automatically, even though she didn’t own a dog. Joan looked at the dog, who looked up at Joan. She guessed it was some sort of chihuahua. It was not a pretty dog. Its teeth couldn’t make up their mind which direction to point in, and its fur stuck out as though it had built up a considerable amount of static electricity. Joan could sympathise, she had exactly the same trouble with her own hair. “You’re an ugly little thing aren’t you?” she said, but not unkindly. The dog gave a bored whine as though it was sick to death of hearing about it. “Let’s have a look to see who you really belong to.” Joan crouched to examine the copper disc attached to the dog’s collar. The dog dutifully waited. The name tag had just one word engraved on it – ‘Joan’. “It seems we’ve got something in common,” Joan said, stroking Joan behind the ears. What sort of person, she wondered, called their dog Joan? She was running late for her check-up. Should she take the dog in with her? They’d started charging people for late arrivals; she’d thought this was a good idea but never thought she would be one of the offenders. What was the dentist’s policy on dogs she wondered? She knew he was an animal lover. The last time she visited for a particularly harrowing scale and polish, he’d told her he had lots of pets and he liked to name them after his patients. Joan studied canine Joan who yawned idly, all her wonky teeth on display. Was this the dentist’s dog? It’s true she’d always regretted not getting dental braces as a girl, but surely it was unkind to name this scruffy dog after her? “Come on Joan,” she said firmly, “I’m taking you back to where you belong.” The dog trotted cheerfully after her, showing neither

familiarity nor fear as they marched through the door into the dentist’s reception area. “You’re cutting it fine,” Melissa, the receptionist, said sternly, “I was about to mark you as late.” “That would be a bit rich, considering.” Joan summoned all her righteous indignation. “And I don’t appreciate people making fun of my teeth.” Melissa looked genuinely confused. “I wasn’t aware I was,” she answered. Joan was on the warpath. “Why, then, has the dentist named a pet after me?” Melissa blushed. “If it’s any consolation,” she said soothingly, “we’re all very fond of Joan the goldfish.” “Goldfish?” Joan stuttered. “In the waiting room aquarium,” Melissa said sweetly. “He called her after you, because, like you, she’s a bit nervous.” “Everyone’s nervous at the dentist’s!” Joan said indignantly. “Then who does this Joan belong to?” Melissa leaned across the counter and frowned at Joan the dog, who was chewing her lead. “I’m going to hazard a guess,” Melissa said, “I bet she belongs to the gentleman over there.” She nodded towards a well-dressed man with his back to them leafing through a copy of ‘Hello’ magazine. “I said he couldn’t bring his dog in, so he tied her up outside.” Joan went pale. “Do you know him?” Melissa asked. “He’s my hairdresser.” Joan ran a hand through her nest of hair. “How flattering,” Melissa flicked her silken hair and smiled, “to have so many pets named after you.” By Jackie Brewster

Marie Curie seeks volunteers for York Marie Curie is looking for local people to join the York Fundraising Group to help raise vital funds so that Marie Curie nurses can continue to provide care for people with terminal illnesses in the comfort of their own homes. Set up almost 4 years ago, the team of four volunteers has worked tirelessly on annual campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and last year alone, raised a staggering £17,600. The group is looking for more people to join to help them stage imaginative, entertaining and successful events across York, explore new fundraising opportunities, build relationships with local businesses and organisations and uncover new sites for collection tins. The group is also looking to recruit a Community Speaker to help champion the Charity’s work locally. The role involves working with organisations such as Women’s Institutes, schools, business networks and church groups to deliver a

presentation that tells the Marie Curie story to ensure more people know about the Charity’s services in their area, how to access them and increase volunteering and fundraising support. Katie Grinter, Volunteer Manager for Marie Curie explained: “Marie Curie nurses provide a vital service in our area, caring for local people with terminal illnesses. Whilst the Charity is part funded by the NHS, it is heavily dependent on donations from the general public and our fundraising groups play a pivotal role in supporting the Charity and raising awareness of its good work.” If you have an affinity with Marie Curie, are organised, creative, keen to raise money for a worthy cause and looking for a new challenge, then why not join the team? To join a local fundraising group for Marie Curie, or to find out more about the group and other ways to support the charity, please contact Katie Grinter on 07884 180517 or email katie. grinter@mariecurie.org.uk

Threat To Our Peaceful Villages Says Haxby and Wigginton Against Fracking

have no say about having gas exploration well sites in fields next to our villages and the industry envisages building thousands across Yorkshire. All this for gas we possibly do not need! The Government admits we do not need shale gas for security of supply and it will not mean cheaper energy bills as INEOS, who hold the licence in this area, intend to use it to make plastic.”

This picture is of a gas exploration well site which is around the size of two football pitches.

“Like most other people living in Haxby and Wigginton and surrounding villages I greatly appreciate the tranquillity and beauty of the local area with access to open countryside on our doorstep. The thought of losing all this and the area becoming industrialised, an estimated 12,000 wells could be built across the north of England, fills me with horror.

Susan Turner, co-founder of Haxby & Wigginton Against Fracking says, “Our government have proposed a change to planning policy to enable gas exploration well sites to be built under the permitted development scheme. This means planning permission won’t be needed. We could

“Fracking results in many lorry movements, noisy operations, 24/7, uses millions of litres of water lost for ever to the system and dangerous chemicals which create a great risk of contamination and pollution. It changes the land use from agricultural to industrial.”

Travel

Canada - Adventrue on Athabasca the red craggy rocks almost within arm’s reach, the soaring birds, mighty glaciers and snow-covered peaks rising all around. Even more exciting is the iconic ride on one of the giant Ice Explorers. The first few minutes include a steep scary descent on a stone track until you reach the edge of the Athabasca, a tongue of ice, six km long and thicker in places than the Eiffel Tower.

S

preading out from the ‘Columbia’, the largest icefield in the Rockies, Athabasca is among the world’s most accessible glaciers, a popular day trip from Lake Louise, Jasper or even Banff, though this involves a longer drive. Winding along the Continental Divide, past soaring peaks, forests, waterfalls and lakes, the Icefields Parkway leads almost to the very edge, near the meeting point of the Jasper and Banff National Parks. Up there the Discovery Centre is the first point of call with exhibits on the history and movements of the ice and the area’s natural world. It is the perfect introduction before tackling the day’s adventure but one should be prepared for changing weather and high altitude, with the glacier’s average height around 3,000 metres. There are walking trails for the brave and well-organised treats in season, led by knowledgeable and highly entertaining guides. First on anyone’s list is the award-winning skywalk, just a five minute bus transfer from the centre. Built into the rock, carefully integrated into the environment with near-zero footprint, it begins along a vertiginous cliff’s edge then steps out on a semi-circular look out with a glass floor, perched 280 metres above the valley. There you are, suspended between heaven and earth, the Sunwapta river meandering far below,

Glacial vistas, snowy mountains etched into the sky, it’s like the end of the world, even though the Explorer can only venture so far on the crunchy surface. The ice is pure blue in places as this is the only colour it cannot absorb. Then the ‘giant’ stops, giving you ten minutes or so to walk around the safe icy section. No one ventures beyond the danger cones for untouched snow and ice are amazingly thick, dotted with hidden crevasses and water holes where lives have been lost. Sometimes a deep rumble echoes in the thin mountain air and you might spot an avalanche tumbling down the slope just ahead of you. Don’t expect to be alone on the glacier, it is highly popular, but whatever the crowds, you can switch off and commune with the natural world, so mighty and inspiring. Visitors leaving before dusk are likely to see bears and elks close to the road, and those on the way to Jasper might enjoy the last rays of the sun on the Athabasca waterfall. Meanwhile, high above on the edge of the glacier, the lucky ones settle down in the lodge for a starlit night. Strange noises in the dark may remind them that the Athabasca is always on the move, receding by around five metres a year. By Solange Hando

Parcels, Peculiarities and the Postal Service Privacy and Peculiarity

Long before the internet, retaining privacy in communication while ensuring security was problematic.

Royal Mail Coach at The Science Museum. Credit Martinvl, Wikimedia Commons.

It’s World Post Day on 9th October, but how was our own postal service created?

Non-Humble Beginnings

A royal dispatch system existed even in Edward IV’s reign, but it was Henry VIII who created the Master of the Posts role and Brian Tuke who truly founded the service. Tuke, who became a knight and Master of the Posts in 1516, used his experience of continental postal services and his influence to create a formal postal network. In each key town he nominated, three horses were used to transport mail. Their stable was called a post, hence our mail system’s nickname. But this service was truly Royal Mail, solely for the King and court. Common folk had to wait for Charles I to open up the King’s Posts to everyone in 1635. Cromwell’s more formal Office of Postage covered the whole Commonwealth, but once the monarchy was restored this was replaced by the General Post Office, a genuinely public service. By this time, senders rather than recipients were paying the postage, and by 1661 letters were also being date-stamped – to mitigate complaints about delays. Royal Mail was privatised in 2011 and the UK government sold its remaining shares in 2015, ending 499 years of public ownership.

Oliver Cromwell’s Principal Secretary of State, John Thurloe, regularly intercepted mail for intelligence purposes, but if he hadn’t, Sexby’s plot to assassinate Cromwell may never have been discovered. As for scam emails, they’re merely descendants of scam letters. In the 1870s, many US citizens received letters from someone claiming they had been given their name by a friend and offering $1,500 of ‘the best and safest’ counterfeit money for $75 of genuine cash (or a bargain $30,000 for $400). On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, whom you might have expected to value his privacy given the times he lived in, is rumoured to have thrown his stamped letters into the street, relying on the good nature of passers-by to pick them up and post them. Far more peculiar were the antics of Willie Reginald Bray, who was inspired to test the limits of the postal service by its own 1898 guide. Among other things, it promised to send creatures through the post, including a live bee, ‘if confined in a suitable receptacle’. Bray took a dog to the post office, which was ‘posted’ via a walk with an obliging postman, and even posted himself once. It’s also believed that in December 1899, he became the first person to send a postcard to Santa Claus Esq. Finally, while Lewis Carroll is now viewed as something of a dubious character by many, some of the advice in his letter-writing guide is still relevant today. He advised always placing a cheque or document in the envelope before you finish writing the letter, lest you forget to put it in. Wise words indeed.

Light Up - Lock Up by PCSO Andy Smith 5520

As Summer comes to an end and the nights draw in, it is important to consider your home security. Many steps that you can take are obvious but put simply if you remember to “Light Up – Lock Up” then you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. A home in darkness is potentially a target for an opportunistic thief. If you are going out during the evening leave a light on in the property to give the impression that somebody is home as a deterrent. To leave a light on inside your home for a few hours whilst you are out will cost you only a few pence and is far preferable to returning home to find that you have been the victim of a crime. Timer switches are inexpensive and easy to use and are readily available in DIY Stores and online. Locking Up is something that everybody should do although a large number of burglaries are committed through an unlocked door. An opportunistic thief will try your door and if it is unlocked could enter your property and steal items that we often leave in the hallway or very close to the front door. This only takes a couple of seconds and is easily prevented. We all need to try and make sure that we do not leave items on display that will be a temptation for a thief. An expensive phone or laptop charging next to a window is a temptation and again simply by removing this item from view you massively reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Your local Police teams are actively marking property across York, events are advertised on Twitter and this is a great opportunity to have your valuables permanently marked using the Dot Peen equipment. This is a great deterrent and should you ever be the victim of a theft, makes the chances of your property being returned to you much greater. You can also follow the online form on the North Yorkshire Police website to request an Officer attend to mark your property or alternatively contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will be happy to arrange this for you. You can also receive updates and information from your local Police team by signing up to Community Messaging at www.nycm.co.uk

The magic of Disney comes to Joseph Rowntree Theatre Following York Musical Theatre Company’s many hit successes with devised shows over the years including Something Wonderful, Hooray for Hollywood, Coward and Cole and Happy & Glorious, Paul Laidlaw turns to a show for all ages to enjoy, When You Wish Upon A Star. It’s hard to imagine a childhood without the magic of Walt Disney. The timeless songs, characters and films that Disney has created over the many years have charmed and enthralled children and adults the world over. Devised and Directed by Paul Laidlaw, this new show brings the magic of Disney to York in a unique way, journeying through the decades of Disney from Steamboat Willie in 1928 up to the hits of today such as Moana and Frozen. Paul said, “There is no question that the success of Disney’s animated and live action films owed a great debt to the talented composers who provided the songs and scores which made the films so memorable. From Frank Churchill through

the Sherman Brothers to Elton John and Alan Menkin a team of dedicated people provided some of the most romantic, witty and exuberant songs ever to appear on the silver screen. ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ is a tribute to those who created the music which was the very essence of Walt Disney’s timeless magic.” When You Wish Upon A Star plays for four performances only, 4 – 6 October with a Saturday matinee at The Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York. Tickets for the show are £14 with a fantastic family ticket offer available and are on sale now www.josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk or from the Box Office 01904 501935.

Kitchens & Bedrooms Local service, choice & value

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.”

After 28 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.

Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

All About Apples

A

is for apple, seemingly the most ordinary fruit in the world and so embedded in our lives we use it to help us learn the alphabet as children. Time and again it tops the polls as the favourite fruit of the nation but how much do we really know about the humble apple? It came originally from Kazakhstan in Asia, introduced into Britain by the Romans who understood how to cross different apple varieties and how to graft them on to different root stocks. The Victorians prized the thinner skinned varieties over tougher waxier ones and would be stunned to see the popularity of varieties such as Braeburn and Jazz today. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the apple is how many different varieties can grow in Britain. We see maybe half a dozen varieties in the supermarket, but in Yorkshire alone you could be growing Lane’s Prince Albert (gorgeous late cooker) Nancy Jackson (another late cooker which keeps well in storage), Adam’s Pearmain (late dessert) or Bloody Ploughman ( a mid-season dessert apple with its own murderous legend). All these apples grow at Helmsley Walled Garden where we have over one hundred trees and nearly as many varieties. They clothe the walls in espaliers, grow freely in the orchard and make cordons and steps overs around the community plots. These last mentioned form the Hilary Wilson collection of apples that grow well in Yorkshire. Hilary is a well-known pomologist with an almost unparalled knowledge of northern apples. Over the years she tracked down these unusual varieties and generously donated this collection to the Garden. One of the things I find most fascinating is how different apples can look and taste. I grew up when the main apple choices in the supermarket were Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. Imagine my surprise later in life to discover that apples can differ in colour from pale lemon through green and rose to deepest burgundy and can taste crisp, dry or light and sweet. Imagine also my surprise to discover that

picked fresh, Golden Delicious has a delicate flavour rather than none at all after it has been in cold storage for months. When we make apple juice here at the Garden it ranges from palest pink to deepest amber and the flesh comes in different textures also. So embedded in our history is the apple that many myths surround it including the power of bestowing eternal youth, or so the Celts believed. I can’t vouch for that but I can say that there is a wealth of gorgeous British apples to be discovered and you can find out more if you come to Helmsley Walled Garden on Saturday 20th October for our Apple Day event. There will be juicing demonstrations and the chance to taste both apples and juice along with apple trails and activities for children. So come and enjoy this most British fruit with us.

Love and Betrayal at York Theatre Royal

C

armen is one of the most famous operas and in its exciting new production, York Opera will bring to the stage this story of love and betrayal set in nineteenth century Spain.

The opera will be sung in English and supported by a full orchestra. Musical highlights include Carmen’s Habanera, Escamillo’s Toreador’s Song and the March Of The Toreadors. York Opera is York’s leading amateur opera company. Each year they produce a number of operas, operettas and concerts, including some for charity. Singers are from all over Yorkshire, and are occasionally even recruited internationally! Back With A Bang York Business Week 2018 Will Be 'Best Yet' York Business Week is back and shaping up to be the ‘biggest and best yet’ according to organisers Make It York. York Business Week 2018 will take place from 1319 November, with a wide range of events running across the city. Based around four core themes, the week’s events will focus firmly on the future: both futureproofing the city’s economy and helping businesses take steps to secure long-term success. Andrew Sharp, Head of Business at Make it York, says: “Our themes this year are world class York; start-up to scale-up; innovation; and skills and talent; and we have curated a programme of events to inspire and help the region’s businesses set strong foundations for future success.” The York Business Week conference on Tuesday 13 November will get the week off to a flying start, welcoming a host of well-known businesses leaders to York Racecourse to share some of the secrets of their success. Speakers include Richard Harpin, founder and CEO of FTSE 250 firm Homeserve, and Tim Leigh, whose creative construction company Stage One Creative has been involved in every single Olympic opening and closing ceremony since 2004. Andrew Swift CEO of FERA Science Ltd will also take to the stage, highlighting the city’s world leading strengths in science and technology. TEDxYork will also be taking place during York Business Week (Friday 16th November), aimed to inspire, educate and bring new ideas worth sharing to the city. The event will be a carefully curated combination of TED talk videos, live presenters from all over the world and local people sharing innovative ideas, insights and deep discussions. The TEDxYork programme and website will be launching soon and tickets will go on sale at the end of September. In an exciting and topical collaboration the York BID is set to host a special event focusing on the future of the high-street. Bill Grimsey, Government advisor and author of the influential Grimsey Review will share his views on the dramatic structural changes affecting the retail sector, from changing consumer behaviour driven by technology, to an out of date business rates system, and he will share his blueprint for change.

(left to right): Make It York Staff who are organising York Business Week: Mark Bates, Business Growth Executive; Charles Storr, Business Growth Manager; Faye Rhodes, Partnerships Manager; Heather Niven, Head of Science City York; and Andrew Sharp, Head of Business.

Principal sponsors of York Business Week are Business Switch Gas and Electric, Garbutt and Elliot, h2h , Incremental Solutions, Penlife Associates Chartered Financial Planners, Rollits LLP, Sparq (a part of the Saville Group), XPS Solutions Ltd, York BID and Yorwaste. These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Motoring

The most rugged cars you can buy We’ve rounded up nine of the most hardwearing and brawny cars you can buy today, ideal for surviving a nuclear war – or the muddy car boot sale in Sandford, Gloucestershire.

Jeep Wrangler

The latest Jeep Wrangler is more refined, luxurious and car-like than ever, but still retains the DNA of the original Willys Jeep – one of the most iconic off-roaders of all time. Solid axles ensure simplicity, allowing Wranglers to be modified for almost any purpose. For traversing sand dunes or mud-plugging in a deep forest, the Wrangler is about as tough as they come.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Originally known as the G-Wagen, this militaryspec beast has morphed into the ideal transport for those who want to be seen. With glitzy chrome atop the blocky body, and optional AMGtuned engines, it’s often seen in London’s most glamorous districts.

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is typically used as a taxi in London rather than for blasting through sand dunes. But that’s where the ruggedness lies. Nobody expected the Prius to be as reliable as it is – but even daily abuse as Uber cabs can’t break them. Many of these cars have done over 500,000 miles and still have their original battery packs.

Ariel Nomad

Most off-roaders are designed to traverse rough terrain at about 5mph. The Ariel Nomad is designed to do it at 50. With an engine and body from the Atom road car, the rear-wheel-drive Nomad bounces across the terrain rather than ploughing through it. It’s hardcore, open to the elements and great fun.

However, it’s also one of the most serious off-roaders you can buy, thanks to a supersophisticated 4WD system plus three locking differentials. When fitted with chunky tyres, the G-Class is near unstoppable.

Subaru Forester

Toyota Land Cruiser

The brand’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is legendary for its simplicity and reliability, while boxer engines lower the centre of gravity and make for a reassuring drive.

The legendary Land Cruiser is the vehicle that pushed Land Rover out of Australia and showed the world that the Japanese could build off-roaders that never broke down. Though the Land Cruiser isn’t as luxurious as a Range Rover, treat it properly and it’ll probably outlast you. There’s no compromise to be made off-road either.

Isuzu D-Max AT35 Arctic Trucks

Isuzu’s D-Max pickup is already a pretty rugged vehicle, with a beefy diesel engine and four-wheel drive. The specialists at Arctic Trucks, however, have given it enormous tyres and widened arches, giving the car a more purposeful stance, while custom Fox suspension lets it deal with terrain that would trouble a mountain goat.

Subaru has a reputation for producing reliable, rugged cars, and the Forester is no exception. Loved by farmers, Subaru owners tend to keep their cars for longer than any other.

Toyota Hilux

Our third Toyota is perhaps the most legendary – the Hilux, notably the ‘unkillable car’. On BBC’s Top Gear, a 1994 Hilux survived being left at sea, falling off a building, being crashed into a tree and crushed with a wrecking ball – and still started up afterwards. Today’s rather plusher Hilux still retains a wellearned reputation for serious reliability. By James Baggott

Beautiful Bulbs - by Pippa Greenwood

O

rnaments on your windowsills and shelves are pretty enough, but why not make your house all the more special this winter with some bowls of bulbs that are really brimful of colour, perhaps with gorgeous perfume too? You can buy readyplanted bowls of bulbs later in the year, but act now and you could soon have a stunning display at a fraction of the price. The best bulbs are those described as ‘prepared’, which basically means they have been put through a carefully planned sequence of conditions to ensure that they flower well, reliably and uniformly indoors. Prepared bulbs are often a bit pricier but are still great value. You can also use standard bulbs but the results may be unpredictable. I like to use some prepared hyacinths, but just cannot help creating more bowls of non-prepared bulbs too.

Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Special bulb bowls are a good buy, and are available in just about every colour imaginable. They’re rather like huge soup bowls, but in plastic or china. Unlike standard pots they have no drainage holes, which is better for your furniture! You can use normal flower pots, but do make sure you put a fully waterproof container or saucer beneath each pot – or watering will prove messy later on. You can use standard multi-purpose compost for indoor bulb displays, but better still buy yourself some bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb planting. It’s more expensive than multi-purpose compost, but performs better in bulb bowls or other containers without drainage. Hyacinths for forcing are available in just about every shade imaginable – red, pink, white, cream, yellow and blue. It is best to use a single colour in any one container as there is often some variation in flowering times between the colours, and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. Specially prepared crocus, paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. If

you want to make some seriously low-cost bowls, then do as I do and buy a large bag of inexpensive dwarf narcissus, such as the cheerful, often multiheaded ‘Tete-a-Tete’. They work very well, as do crocuses. Fill your bowl about one third full of compost for larger bulbs to one half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the compost gently, but don’t compact it or the roots of the bulbs will not penetrate it well and you’ll end up with bulbs popping out of the top of the bowl. Position the bulbs pointed end uppermost – you can put them quite close to each other but not so close that they are touching their neighbours, and make sure they are not in contact with the sides of the bowl either. Nestle the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that just the noses (the pointed end from which the shoots will appear) are poking out. Water the compost lightly, making sure it is moist but not waterlogged. Then cover the bowls loosely with a black bin liner and put them in a cool, dark place – a cool shed, garage or cupboard under the stairs is ideal. It needs to be both dark and cool or the bulbs will not form good root systems.

Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Check the bowls every week or so and apply a little more water if necessary. It is time to bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about 2-3cm tall, which usually takes 3-5 weeks. Put them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight – a cool but frost-free greenhouse or a spare room window sill for instance. The shoots will continue to grow and develop a healthy green colour; they will now need a little more water. Once the flower buds just start to colour up you can put your bulb bowl in a warmer room, where you will soon be able to enjoy its perfume and good looks. If you want to give the bowl a really

smart look, cover the compost with some moss or tie a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: stylish cloches, tunnels, the fantastic SpeedHoe, plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Lungworm by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic What is Lungworm

The lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Lungworm has spread considerably in recent years and is now endemic in much of the UK.

How do dogs get Lungworm

Lungworm larvae are carried by slugs and snails and can be picked up by dogs whilst rummaging through undergrowth, drinking from puddles, eating grass, or playing with toys that have tiny slugs or snails stuck to them. It’s even been shown that the larvae are released into the mollusc’s slime, so anywhere a slug or snail have been in contact with, which could be on a dogs toy, water bowl etc…. there is a risk that lungworm can be contracted. When a dog eats a slug or snail the lungworm larvae are released into the dog’s intestines. The larvae then burrow through the gut wall and make their way towards the heart, where they develop into adult worms and reproduce. The Lungworm eggs are carried in the bloodstream to the lungs, where they hatch into new larvae that burrow through the lung tissue. These larvae are coughed up by the dog, swallowed and then pass out in the dog’s poo, ready to infect more slugs and snails continuing the cycle. Foxes can also become infected with lungworm, and play a part in spreading the parasite around the country. With more people travelling in the UK with their pets, and roaming foxes, there is a very real risk that this parasite will continue to spread around the country. Frogs can also carry the larvae, posing an additional risk to dogs.

What are the symptoms of Lungworm

Symptoms of lungworm can be easily confused with other illnesses, so it is important to consult your vet immediately if your pet displays any of the following: • A change in behaviour – depression, lethargy or seizures • Breathing problems – coughing or tiring easily • General sickness – weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea

• Poor blood clotting – for example excessive bleeding from minor wounds, nose bleeds, bleeding into the eyes or paleness around the eyes and gums indicating possible anaemia A dog can show just one of these symptoms, or a combination of them. . Lungworm can be fatal if left untreated, so it’s important to get your dog checked over by a vet if you have any concerns.

How is it treated and prevented

If spotted and treated early enough most dogs will make a full recovery, but as this parasite can be fatal, the best way to ensure your pet is protected is by regularly using a product that acts as a preventative. However, not all wormers are effective against lungworm so be sure to ask your vet for advice. Remember, for lungworm prevention must be monthly; using a product every 3 months will not prevent this potentially fatal parasite, as this leaves the dog unprotected for too long between doses. .

A home for Amber? Lovely older girl Amber has come to York Cats Protection as sadly her previous owner passed away. She had been with her owner since she was very young and would ideally need somebody who will be able to give her all the love and attention that she was used to. Adorable Amber has had a grand life so far and is keen to enjoy her retirement that same way! Amber is a quiet cat, but it doesn’t take her long to get used to new people, so after her initial shyness she’ll soon become your best friend and a perfect companion. Although she is only 12 years old (a mere 64 years old in human terms!) Amber is getting overlooked because people think she is too old. Could you be the one to give Amber the blissful life she once knew and so very much deserves? If so get in touch with the team at York Cats Protection on 01904 760356 or via the contact page on our website www.york.cats.org.uk

Boomer & Minnie are very lovely and sweet natured dogs who are totally devoted each other, so we are hoping to find them a home where they will be kept together. Boomer is a typical Labrador who loves everyone he meets, Minnie is a little quieter and loves her cuddles. They are suitable to live with children of junior school age and over, and other dogs. Bailey is a lovely older gentleman, a happy and enthusiastic chap who just loves to play fetch and meet new people. Bailey knows basic commands and walks well on

the lead; he could possibly live with another dog after a successful meet and greet, and with children of secondary school age and over.

A 10th Anniversary Celebration For Harmonia Choir

Harmonia Choir will be celebrating their 10th anniversary alongside York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir (York Phil) at St Peter’s Church in Norton on Saturday 13th October. Harmonia was set up by local singing teacher Alison Davis who saw a need for a ladies choir in the area. Over the years the choir has grown in size and ability and now has 60 members who practice at Norton College every Thursday evening. The choir sings in 3-6 parts performing a wide range of material from folk to gospel, choral to jazz, world music and everything in between. 2018 has been a very successful year for Harmonia with another win in the recital class at the Eskdale Festival Choir Day. Next year they are looking forward to entering the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition in March 2019 to compete against choirs from around the UK. Harmonia has always been keen to be a part of the local community and has performed all over Ryedale, Scarborough, York and Bridlington, raising money for local causes. The choir have performed with York Phil a number of times previously in both Malton and York, as well as supporting them at the Eskdale Festival, and are looking forward to another wonderful and varied programme of music at the October concert.

York Phil have had an equally good year which began with the Community Choir Festival in York in March which attracted 23 choirs. A York Phil member said, “This was followed by winning the Male Voice Class at the Eskdale Festival in April, although we could not get the better of our

talented October hosts, in other classes!” In June York Phil worked with top tenor Graham Edwards in a Pocklington concert which raised more than £3000 for two charities Parkinson’s UK and PSPA. They surprised their long serving director Berry Lewis in July by conferring honorary life membership for her 20 years of dedication to the choir. And in the midst of all this they held three recording sessions and laid down 11 tracks as the basis of their next CD. September brought another day out and concert in Swaledale, and an unusual but very entertaining evening when we hosted the Australian Welsh Male Voice Choir during their comprehensive tour of the UK. York Phil said, “In October we are pleased to be sharing a concert platform again with our friends in Harmonia, without doubt one of the finest choirs in Yorkshire, and we are looking forward to another enjoyable evening.” Tickets for the concert on 13th October are available from Massers, Castlegate, Malton or on 01653 692468.

Twisted Fairy Tales If you like your fairy tales more Brothers Grimm than Disney, you’re in for a treat with this lot… THE BLOODY CHAMBER AND OTHER STORIES ANGELA CARTER

Angela Carter is often seen as the queen of the reimagined fairy tale. In this collection, the stories are as dark, twisted and brilliantly written as they come. The main story, The Bloody Chamber, is a retelling of the French folk tale Bluebeard, which sees a young wife make a gruesome discovery in a locked room at her new husband’s house. The collection also includes retellings of Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Red Riding Hood.

GRIMM TALES FOR OLD AND YOUNG PHILIP PULLMAN

Pullman has reworked 50 of the Grimm brothers’ tales. He’s kept most of the content the same, but updated the language and ‘tidied them up’. The collection includes well-known tales, such as Rapunzel, Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin, along with lesser-known stories such as Hans-My-Hedgehog and The Musicians of Bremen.

REVOLTING RHYMES - ROALD DAHL

Dahl’s childhood classic is more than 35 years old but still just as funny today. Six well-known fairy stories are reimagined in rhyme, with various twists to the tales and extra helpings of gore. Cinderella’s stepsister has her head chopped off, Red Riding Hood turns out to be a crack shot with a pistol and Jack’s mum gets eaten when she climbs the beanstalk. Great fun for kids and parents alike.

THE SURFACE BREAKS - LOUISE O'NEILL

The Surface Breaks is a feminist reimagining of The Little Mermaid. In Gaia’s world, mermaids are supposed to look good, entertain the mermen and stay subservient. Gaia’s father, the king, rules with an iron fist. Gaia swaps her life underwater, her tail and her voice for a chance with the man she saves from a shipwreck. But is he really worth it? An intriguing, thought-provoking tale.

KISSING THE WITCH - EMMA DONOGHUE

Donoghue wrote Kissing the Witch long before her bestselling Room. It’s a collection of 13 rewritten well-known tales, including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Whether it’s Cinderella choosing the Fairy Godmother over the prince, or Beauty discovering an entirely unexpected Beast, the tales are original and well-written. They’re also very short – perfect for enjoying over a coffee break.

THE TRUE STORY OF HANSEL AND GRETEL LOUISE MURPHY

In Nazi-occupied Poland, two Jewish children take on new identities – Hansel and Gretel. Pursued by soldiers, the children’s father and stepmother urge the children to seek safety in the forest while they try to draw the danger away. Deep in the woods lives an old woman who may be the children’s only hope. A harrowing read, but a memorable one.
