W

elcome to the September edition. As editor of magazines and working 2 months ahead on the next issues, it seems to fast track time and muddle with your mind. It’s hard to talk about British Summertime ending when September is just starting and the sun has finally come out! Clocks go back on 28th October, bringing shorter days and long dark evenings – sorry for being depressing! On the plus side I love my winter wardrobe so much more than my summer clothes, and evenings spent with warming coal fires provide for good compensation. For those with real fires, be sure to buy in your coal and wood supplies soon. Maybe it is because of this need to compensate for the passing of summer that autumn comes with a flurry of local events. Amongst many highlights, Last Night of the Proms at Joseph Rowntree Theatre will be raising funds for the York Branch of the Myasthenia Gravis Society. Supporting people with neurological and respiratory illnesses, this is a really valued cause and Ron Middlemas, along with the local group, work tirelessly to help raise the necessary funds to

buy equipment for York Hospital. They would really appreciate your support, and promise some great entertainment. Another event this month is taking place at St Mary’s Church in Haxby where you can share surplus produce and garden tools. With fungal forays, vintage music and karate events, there really is something for everyone this autumn! In fact, we have changed the format of the events pages to hopefully make it easier to find places to go and things to see. I’d love to hear what you think of the change. There are two competitions in the magazine this month. Tickets for The Wizard of Oz at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre are on offer on page 26 and you can win a family ticket for the spectacular Gunpowder Plod on page 18. Well done to Ms Coyle of York for winning the August competition. The answers are on page 61.

Until next time....

Sharthee Scare

This Halloween why not settle down for some good old-fashioned ghost stories with the youngest members of your family. We’re not suggesting you curl up with the latest Stephen King; our selection of children’s favourites will deliver just the right amount of spooky. From toddlers to teenagers, these tales will ensure Halloween is less of a trick and more of a treat.

Funnybones

Janet and Allan Ahlberg What could be more fitting for Halloween than three skeletons on a night out? This classic tale of a somewhat unusual family unit will ease the youngest of readers into Halloween. Setting out on a walk, ready to scare someone and then settling for frightening themselves, it’s a humorous (or should that be humerus?) story with the best laughs coming when they try to reassemble Dog Skeleton. A definite bone-rattler for your littlies, it’s certain to have you humming ‘Dem bones, dem bones’ up until bedtime.

The Graveyard Book Neil Gaiman

Nobody Owens or ‘Bod’ is no ordinary boy. It’s not surprising really given that he’s been raised by ghosts and ghouls after his own family was murdered. Will Bod survive to adulthood given his unusual adopted family? Will his parents’ killers catch up to him? And how do you learn about life, from the dead? This is a strange and compelling tale for older children. Heavily influenced by Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, it’s easy to see why Gaiman has earned himself an 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

army of devoted fans… among the living.

Pure Dead Magic Debi Gliori

Move over Mary Poppins, there’s a new nanny in town. Mrs McLachlan’s hired to sort out the strange and mysterious StregaBorgia family. She has her work cut out dealing with both the children and the parents, not to mention beasts in the basement. This is a Scottish clan in crisis and only a super nanny can come to their rescue. It’s a strange tale that mixes tradition and new technology into a bizarre brew that could have come straight from a Scottish cauldron.

Little Shop of Hamsters (Goosebumps Horrorland)

R.L. Stine

The Goosebumps series does exactly what it says on the tin. Here’s one of our favourite titles in which Sam, who’s desperate to have a pet, starts work in a pet shop. He soon discovers that hamsters may be small, but they’re not always cute. For anyone who enjoyed

‘Bunnicula’, the vampire bunny has nothing on these evil furballs. Be careful what you wish for…and don’t forget to check the hamster cage before you go to sleep.

Kiss of Death Malcolm Rose

A school trip goes very wrong when twins Kim and Seth and their friend Wes visit Eyam: a community that was wiped out by the Black Death. Kim and Wes decide to take coins (one of which happens to be cursed) from the bottom of a well in the village only to have the theft come back to haunt them. When the boys are struck down with what looks like the plague, it’s Seth to the rescue. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘take nothing but photographs’.

The Boy Who Haunted Himself Terry Deary

A bizarre story of an experiment that goes somewhat awry, the shy and retiring Peter Stone becomes possessed by a spirit from the past. He faces an epic internal struggle to regain his body and mind. This is a chilling tale, with a sting at the end. Paul McKenna fans: be warned.

A dream kitchen for half the cost - Ready to use in 48 hours

G

etting a new kitchen can be a stressful experience. Researching magazines and searching online precede days spent traipsing around shops, experiencing all the extremes of retail Britain: from the helpful and the honest to the high-pressure and hard to escape from. And that’s before a decision has even been made. Then there’s a lengthy wait for the materials to arrive – hopefully on time – and preparing for one of the most used rooms in the house to be totally out of bounds. After which it’s at least a week of dust and disruption, takeaways, and a heavily diminished bank balance. But customers in and around York do have a choice. A welcome alternative that is half the cost of an average new kitchen, can be delivered within the month, and fitted in as little as a day. From its easily accessed showroom in Fishergate, Dream Doors York supplies time and money-saving kitchen makeovers – as well as appliances and complete new kitchens if required – fitted by approved and local installers. A family-run business, it is also part of a national franchised network of Dream Doors showrooms that stretches as far south as Exeter. “We understand how daunting a large home

10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

improvement project can be,” says Dream Doors York’s owner Barry Kent. “But there’s far less upheaval with our kitchen makeovers. A door swap takes just one day, whereas a facelift including new worktops and a sink might take an extra day. And by leaving the existing units in place and just changing what can be seen, customers get a kitchen that looks brand new, without the outlay or the stress of a complete refurbishment.” He adds: “All our doors are made-to-measure in the UK, and none are off-the-shelf. This means that when the order is taken, the doors are made specifically for that customer. We advise everyone to visit our

Before

showroom first so that they can look over the products we have on display. But makeovers can’t be bought from the showroom alone, as we have to survey the existing kitchen to give an honest quotation for the work. All of our quotations are free, and there is no pressure on the customer if they decide to wait, or go elsewhere.” Dream Doors takes just a 50 percent deposit from customers on order, and guarantees all its doors and work free of charge. Reviews can be found on Checkatrade, an independent consumer monitoring scheme, where Dream Doors York scores an average of 9.6 out of 10. “We’re part of a huge brand, the biggest name in kitchen facelifts,” says Barry. “But unlike other national companies, our customers deal with us – the business owners – and I know this ownership leads to greater customer service.”

What our customers say...

“Our heating was not sufficiently working in our spare room and we wanted Matthew to install an additional radiator in that room. Matthew advised that based on the size and capacity of the radiator in the room, this was unnecessary. After investigation Matthew bled, balanced and amended the heating inlet valve to fully open on the single radiator in that room. This was instead of the expense and upheaval of installing a second radiator as we originally requested. Matthew has immense enthusiasm towards assisting his customers. We would have no hesitation to recommend Matthew Benstead for the excellent and friendly work carried out for us”. Harry and Deborah Gardner, Haxby “I found MB Plumbing services to be friendly, efficient and extremely reliable. Work was carried out to the highest standards and more importantly everything was explained and detailed from quotation right through to completion”. Branching out How are your trees and shrubs doing? Whether you are responsible for a few saplings or a large woodland estate, October is an important time in the yearly cycle of your trees. Planting, hedge-laying and pruning of fruit trees should be carried out in autumn, and it’s also wise to make sure your trees are strong and healthy ahead of the winter weather. Any dead branches, rotting, snapping, cracking or creaking should be checked out, as well as any unusually early signs of autumn such as yellowing or browning of the leaves before their time. If you’re unsure about the health of your trees, or how to care for them, Expert Tree Care can help. They offer a huge range of tree care services, from dayto-day pruning and disease control to lightning protection and specialist specimen work, mainly in Malton, Pickering, Wetherby, Harrogate, York and Selby, but also covering all of Yorkshire and the Humber. The team is happy to come out and assess what you may need, and they offer noobligation quotes, consultations and advice. They can also carry out inspections and surveys, and work

with customers and the local council on matters surrounding tree preservation orders. What’s more, once Expert Tree Care have helped you once, they’ll keep in touch, with attentive aftercare for all customers. Getting experts in at such times is crucial for the protection of the customer as well as the council, as the penalties for getting it wrong can be costly. If a full tree health report is required for insurance purposes, Expert Tree Care has a tree consultancy team who can give the necessary professional recommendations for such cases. Business owner and founder Chris Neviani is a highly experienced tree surgeon. He joined Castle Howard’s forestry department on leaving school, 16 years ago and since then he has worked for some of the most well-known tree surgeons in the

world, as well as some small, local tree surgeon companies in and around York. He set up Expert Tree Care earlier this year to bring together the best of both types of business for his customers. He said: “Having worked for multi-national firms and for one-man-bands in and around York, I decided to form a business that would strike a good balance between a personal, friendly service to customers and highly professional equipment, training and staff. “The result is top class standards with the personal touch.” Every member of Expert Tree Care’s five-man team is highly qualified, with extensive vocational B-Tec National qualifications and industry accreditations on their wall, plus tree climbing, aerial rescue and chainsaw certificates that go way beyond the basic requirements for a company of this kind. M

for your home

aking the right choices when it comes to furnishing your home comes down to knowing what you want, having a good imaginative eye, and understanding how to use colour and fabric to create the look you’re after. Knowing what you want is the easy bit – but how do you ensure you don’t spend your hard-earned budget on something that seems like a great idea in the shop or the catalogue, but just doesn’t work when you get it home? Enter Janet Neilson, interior designer and curtain maker of more than 30 years’ experience. Janet helps homeowners from North Yorkshire turn their design dreams into well-executed reality. What’s more, Janet has a range of options to suit all budgets, which means getting professional soft furnishing and interior design advice need not cost as much as you might fear. Friendly advice is always available in the showroom, together with an affordable made-to-measure 14-day curtain and blinds service. Janet can supply a full range of beautiful curtains, drapes, blinds, and soft furnishings. If you do want a full, bespoke professional design service, Janet will visit you at your home, measure up and have a chat with you about what you’re looking for. Then she’ll suggest colours and styles and put together a scheme or a mood board to help you picture the end result. Or, if you’re budgeting carefully, there’s no need to miss out on the expertise – Janet can simply create the mood board, and leave you to do the rest. For more information, call Janet on 01904 762023 or visit the showroom at Neilson Interiors. 99a, The Village, Haxby, York. YO32 2JH.

New Earswick Musical Society

N

ew Earswick Musical Society are proud to present the Wizard of Oz as their next production at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, on the 7th – 11th November 2012. The Wizard of Oz, tells the story of Dorothy Gale (played by Jessica Bannister) from Kansas, and her pet dog Toto. Dorothy dreams of a wonderful land (“Over the Rainbowâ€?) but then she and Toto are caught in a terrifying storm. A cyclone lifts their home from Kansas and carries them over the rainbow into the beautiful, magical land of Oz. Dorothy finds herself in Munchkinland, and is hailed as a heroine by its villagers after Dorothy’s house fell on the Wicked Witch if the East (“Ding Dong the Witch is Deadâ€?). Unfortunately the dead Witch has a sister the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Perri Barley) who wants revenge on Dorothy. Dorothy asks the Munchkins how to get home and is comforted by the good Sorceress of The North (played by Stephanie Crossley) who urges her to go to the Emerald City to visit the powerful Wizard of Oz (played by Geoff Walker). Along the way, Dorothy and Toto are joined with other magical characters of Oz, the Scarecrow (played by Paul Blenkiron) joins Dorothy to meet the great Wizard so he may give him a brain (“If I only had a Brainâ€?) Next, Dorothy, Toto and the Scarecrow meet a Tin Man (played by Richard Rodgers) who is upset as he does not have a heart (“If I only had a Heartâ€?). Finally, the four travellers encounter the Cowardly Lion (played by Stephen Tearle) and he expresses his feelings of being a “dandy Lionâ€? (“If I only had the Nerveâ€?) and decides to join the others on their journey. The five friends eventually reach the Emerald City and are welcomed by Gloria (played by Amy Fletcher) who happily gives them a tour of her home (“Merry old Land of Ozâ€?). Will Dorothy and Toto return to Kansas? Will the Scarecrow be awarded his Brains? “We’re off to see the Wizardâ€? why don’t you! Banker’ Bonuses

- not your problem?

I

’d like to thank you on behalf of the Halifax Banking Group and the Inland Revenue for all your generous contributions this year. Thanks to your help the Tax Man got to keep in excess of 12.6 billion pounds in unclaimed tax and benefits. And due to your unstinting generosity, the Halifax got to pay its top brass employment packages of in excess of a million quid. Nice work if you can get it. “Nothing to do with me” you might say. Well you’re probably wrong. It might be everything to do with you. And here’s why. Most Cash ISA investors are with the Halifax – by far the biggest ISA provider. Many Halifax customers have a “Saver” account. After a one year “sweetener”, the interest rate is, at best , 0.5% pa. Let’s put this into numbers - £10,000 invested in a year old Saver account is earning £5 a year interest if you’re lucky. But hey – it’s tax free so that’s OK then. An extra £1 in your pot. You’re not going to get very rich on that, are you? No, but the Bankers and the Tax Man are, thank you very much. So to all of you grumbling about bankers’ bonuses – if you’ve got a Halifax ISA – you’re paying for them. The truth of the matter is that everyone thinks they’re doing great with a Cash ISA because it’s tax free. Well yippee do. What would you rather have - £5 of tax free interest or £200 of taxable interest? Think it through people. If you’ve had enough of feeding the greedy bankers, of being taxed into a corner, of being ripped off and throwing your hard earned cash down the drain in misguided and ineffective savings plans, get a copy of my FREE guide - “What’s Mine is Mine – A Straight Talking Guide To Protecting Your Stuff from Crazy Governments, Greedy Bankers, Desperate Creditors and Other Legalised Robbers”. In it, I tell you who’s attacking your money, and more importantly, what you can do about it. It’s time to fight back and take control of your money. Julie Wilson – Straight Talking ISO 22222 accredited Chartered Financial Planner & Director of Pen-Life Associates Ltd, who help individuals and small businesses with all aspects of financial planning including residential/commercial mortgages and equity release, individual and business protection, pensions, retirement and later life/long term care planning, savings, investment and inheritance tax planning.

Discover the

Canal du Midi

I

in the South of France

n 1996, the Canal du Midi became the first canal in the world to receive World Heritage status, as one of the ‘greatest engineering feats of modern times’ and ‘outstanding landscape fashioned by man’. Designed to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean across south west France, it had been planned since Roman times but work did not start until 1667, taking 14 years and 15,000 people to complete. Sadly, the engineer Pierre Paul Riquet passed away just months before the royal

barge opened the first stretch in his native town of Béziers, in 1681. From Toulouse, where it joins the Canal de Garonne, to the vast Etang de Thau on the Mediterranean, the 245 km long waterway is dotted with over 300 supporting structures, including bridges, locks and canal aqueducts invented by Riquet to cross streams and rivers. The canal tunnel in Malpas was also a world’s first, completed in secret in just a week before the authorities had a chance to find out. They had refused permission on safety grounds. The tunnel remains one of the highlights along the route, rivalled only by Fonserannes, a steep staircase of seven locks and now a listed monument. For 200 years or so, the canal brought wealth to the region, encouraging agriculture, trade and related business, from boat yards to inns. It was the cheapest way to transport people and goods since a single barge could carry the equivalent of 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Having turned down the canal because of the cost, the town of Carcassonne soon realised its mistake and agreed eventually to finance a diversion. Inevitably, the advent of the railway brought commercial trade to an end but right across Languedoc, the Canal du Midi is alive and well, an integral part of the landscape, meandering past lock-keepers’ cottages, hill top castles and red-roofed villages nestling among vineyards and sunflower fields. Fed by reservoirs from the Black Mountain, or foothills of the central range, shaded by plane trees, pines and cypresses which stabilise the banks and preserve moisture, it’s a peaceful haven for holiday barges, yachts and cruisers. Fishermen doze on the banks, swans and ducks nest in the reeds and the old tow path doubles up as a cycling and walking trail. For those who cruise along the canal, there is plenty of excitement, working the locks, ducking under low bridges, heading into the tunnel, and plenty to see, from Marseillan and the nearby oyster beds to the medieval walled town of Carcassonne, the largest in Europe, or Toulouse, the vibrant ‘pink city’ basking on the banks of the Garonne. There are picturesque harbours along the way, Castelnaudary, Le Somail, Capestang, wine tasting cellars, flower-draped inns, nature reserves, home to peacock butterflies and 200 species of birds, and glistening lagoons where flamingos feed among the islands. In Port Lauragais, the Pierre Paul Riquet Centre is dedicated to the history of the canal while at the nearby Seuil de Naurouze, the highest point on the route and the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, an obelisk has been erected in Riquet’s honour. There is no better place to celebrate this local genius, an engineer with amazing vision but also a caring man who introduced sick pay and rest days for his workers, centuries ahead of his time. by Solange Hando Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 2nd October

Autumn

Pudding Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.

1. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool. 2. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. INGREDIENTS 175g caster sugar 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced 100g raspberries 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced 100g blackcurrants or blueberries 100g blackberries 10 slices thick-sliced white bread Extra fruit, to decorate

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling) 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

3. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. 4. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. 5. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 2nd October

Mud Fever in Horses

A

by Vicky Williams Station House Vets

lthough mud fever is a condition that usually affects horses during the winter months, this summer has been so wet and dismal, we are seeing a high number of cases now. It is characterised by inflamed, crusty and oozing skin at the back of the lower leg of the horse, especially in the heel region. It often affects white legs (more sensitive skin) and tends to affect hind limbs more so than forelimbs. Mud fever mostly occurs in horses that spend some or all of their time living outdoors and occurs when the skin becomes wet and muddy, and therefore more susceptible to invasion by a bacteria called dermatophilus congolensis, which thrives in damp conditions, and can be difficult to ward off until environmental conditions change.

. . . e l Pick B

eautiful Pickle is a very friendly and gentle young lady. She is sadly back with us after having a little trouble with the other cat in her new home. Pickle enjoys a lot of attention and loves being 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

groomed, she will roll over to get the comb into all her little creases and along her belly, which is currently on the rather large side. This is currently being remedied with a diet and slowly but surely Pickle’s weight is going down. Pickle’s new family will need to be conscious of this and keep and eye on her weight as she does have a taste for the finer things in life! Pickle can be a little on the timid side at times but loves nothing more than sitting for cuddles and getting lots of attention, you just need to earn her trust. Due to her nature this gorgeous lady will need to be the only pet in the household. York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582

Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Visit www.york.cats.org.uk to see the other cats in our care.

PETS

OCTOBER 2012 • ISSUE 84 As with all diseases, prevention is better than cure! Prevention of mud fever can be difficult in winter months when fields are constantly wet and muddy, but you can help to protect your horses heels by applying a waterproof barrier cream to prevent wet penetrating the skin. In horses with feathered limbs, it can be helpful to clip away the hair along the backs of the legs, which will help the skin dry more quickly. It will also help if you wash mud off the legs of your horse each night and then dry them thoroughly. If you notice soreness, oozing or scabs on your horses lower limbs then you should contact your veterinary surgeon, as, if mud fever is diagnosed, antibiotics are often required to help fight off the bacterial infection. And lastly.... Edmund would like to thank all the kind sponsors who backed him to ride in the Macmillan Cancer Support race in York on 16th June. The whole day at the races raised over £300,000 to which Edmund’s sponsors contributed over £6,000 It was a fantastic achievement by all concerned and a real Win Win – a great fundraiser and great fun!

Mitsubishi Outlander '12 N ew car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty

big deal. So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is efficiency, space and refinement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it. In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a

time when design is at the forefront of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives. However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a four-wheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. We drove a pre-production model, Price: £24,995 (est) Engine: 2.2-litre, diesel Power: 148bhp, 380Nm Max speed: 125mph (est) 0-60mph: 9.7 (est) Efficiency: 50.4mpg (est) Emissions: 145g/km (est) Availability: On sale Nov 12 Rating: 3 Stars

MOTORING

OCTOBER 2012 • ISSUE 84 but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/ km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg. The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that made up our test route. The 2.2-litre is likely to be good for 125mph and will crack the benchmark 60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refinement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too. If we were to be picky, we did find the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners. New technology, for Mitsubishi at least, will also make a debut on the Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example. What will come as standard is yet to be finalised, but expect the lot on the top-of-the-range model. There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate. But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot floor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely flat. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run. Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole offering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year offering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very different story indeed.

Takethe

Floor

Katherine Sorrell offers a guide to fabulous flooring, from the traditional to the unconventional.

Timber

Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less long-lasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a wood-effect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a high-pressure laminate surface.

Carpet

Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile is the toughest). Natural wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fire-resistant, but expensive; while cheaper, man-made fibres may look unattractive or not wear

well. A popular solution is a combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a good quality underlay is essential.

Natural fibres

In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hardwearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring.

Hard surfaces

Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and waterresistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array

Sheet flooring

Softer and warmer than stone or timber, sheet floorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork – are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to lay (even on slightly uneven floors), and are easy to clean. Lino is a traditional material made from natural ingredients, and has its own lovely patina, while vinyl is a PVC-based man-made material, which comes in a huge range of textures and patterns, many of them good imitations of stone, wood or ceramic tiles. Cork, often under-rated, is hard-wearing, resilient to water and offers an interesting, natural look.

Rugs

With any flooring other than carpet, you will probably want to put down one or more rugs, adding softness, colour and extra interest. A rug can disguise poor flooring – and can be taken with you when you move. Often a good starting point for a decorative scheme, rugs come in an infinite variety of shapes and sizes, textures and colours, patterns and prices. There’s a wonderful range of hand-made rugs from around the world, including Indian dhurries, Greek flokatis, Middle Eastern kelims and French aubussons. Modern machine-made rugs can be very attractive, and you can even have a rug woven to your own design.

UNUSUAL CHOICES

• A leather floor (tiles or sheets) is warm, soft and quiet underfoot, and requires little more than regular buffing and waxing. It wears well, too – scuffs and marks acquired over the years are part of its attraction.

DISCOUNT FOR 2 OR MORE ROOMS

• Concrete floors, though cold and hard, can be dyed in innumerable colours and given an interesting variety of finishes, from polished to painted. • Rubber floors have a cool, stylish look and are great for waterproofing bathrooms. They come in tile or sheet form, and can be solidcoloured or patterned, smooth or studded. • Bamboo is thoroughly environmentally friendly, being fast-growing and everregenerating. The stems are laminated together to form boards as strong as wood, then coated with lacquer for a durable surface.

A Better Life

Man V Slug

The late poet Dorothy Frances Gurney wrote that: One is nearer God’s Heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth. That may be true, but preparing the garden, for growing vegetables, is its own special form of purgatory. Nature conspires to make the task as difficult as possible, so we took it in stages.

Step One – Peat-less pots are go. We chose green bean and mange tout seeds, and filled the little pots from our compost bin. I soon discovered that it’s a fine line between moist and soggy. Step Two - Mark out the plot, somewhere beyond the cypress tree’s reach to allow for the possibility of direct sunlight. That’s the easy part - it makes you feel like you’re retracing the first, tentative steps of our hunter-gatherer ancestors when they realised that a little porridge might be nice for a change. Step Three - Dig for Pyrrhic victory, trusting that the veg will subsequently be worthy of your muscles’ sacrifice. Once the soil has been dug, it’s time to remove the grass and weeds. The chickens loved some of the grass, but the worms received a reprieve, as they were on active service. Step Four - A ginger beer and a bag of crisps for me. Then the soil needs to be turned over and broken up, to help aerate it. I also removed the stones, which is especially important if you’re planting from seeds. Step Five - Dig in the pots when the little plants look old enough to fend for themselves. Once they were installed, I added enough bamboo canes and netting to deter any opportunistic gastropod-

about-garden. Or so I thought. Within a day of completing our defences we were invaded, in a flagrant act of mollusc aggression. We employed slug pellets; we - that is, I - made random security patrols. Enemy snails were sent to the chickens for summary execution, also known by the chooks as ‘snack time’. I did try and reason with the slugs, principally because the chickens weren’t keen on them, but settled for either eviction into the back lane or incarceration in the garden waste bin. But still they came. My vigilance gradually paid off and our plant casualties decreased. Then came that magical day when the first veg flowers appeared. We weren’t out of the woods (or slugs) yet though and you’d be surprised by the amount of slug pellets we used.

OCTOBER 2012 • ISSUE 84 Honestly, I don’t know where they put it all. Having freshly picked beans, from garden to plate in a matter of minutes, is one of life’s little pleasures. Having to play nettle roulette, when picking the mange tout, because I couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the weeding, was less of a joy. The mange tout still tasted great though and it has me thinking about nettle soup. Next time I’ll let the beanlings grow taller before I plant them in, to give them more of a fighting chance. I’ll also make my own peat-less pots out of old newspaper. It’s the Blue Peter approach to green living. sort of opportunity, it made me really appreciate what we have in the UK with free education for all giving us the opportunity to be whoever or whatever we want to be. The biggest highlight of the trip for me was playing football with the locals and the endless hours of ‘duck-duck-goose’ or the ‘hokey cokey’ with primary school children. If I ever had the opportunity to go again, I wouldn’t hesitate, and if anybody was entertaining the idea I would strongly recommend going for a gap year, it’s no word of a lie when they say it changes your life. Hello again, This summer – as some of you may already know, I spent a month sleeping under a mosquito net and bathing in a bucket of cold water in rural Kenya with a group of people from my school. We travelled to three different African communities where we helped with various types of project work which included everything from building a farm fence to cementing a classroom wall. Each task helped to sustain the local area in some way. At the final camp – Muhaka, we spent many an afternoon doing jobs which did seem rather pointless until we saw the bigger picture. The best example of this was the bottle filling… The majority of rural African areas have no recycling at all, so by using the bottles we were preventing them from going to landfill. We used them as a kind of filler in cement, to stabilise small walls and waterproof vegetable patches helping to create an area where vegetables, fruits and herbs could be grown successfully. One of the main things that struck me in Africa was not necessarily the heat, or even the camels wandering down the road, but how happy and content all of the young children were despite the fact that they have next to nothing. Kenyan children appreciate every little thing they have, making the most out of what they’ve been given, and they still manage to come out the other end with a grin. We visited Itinyi Primary the day before their GCSE-equivalent exams, yet when we arrived only half of the school (aged about 6 – 22) were there revising. This was because the other half couldn’t afford to pay the 200 Kenyan Shillings (about £1.60) per person per term to pay the teachers, and seeing as the resources belonged to school, they couldn’t revise at home either. They had to just come into the exam and leave again without any extra help. After seeing 40-50 children crammed into what apparently passed for a classroom, all so enthusiastic to learn because they felt privileged to get that

Please book a place by contacting Catherine on 01904 412861 or by emailing rotters@ stnicksfields.org.uk It’s that time of year when people start to think about having a garden clear out. Why not use all this garden waste to make free compost that you can then use back in your own garden. Making compost at home is a great way to save money, help the environment and the finished compost is great for your garden If you don’t know where to start then why not go along to a York Rotters free training session.. York Rotters Project Officer, Catherine Bamford, stated ‘composting is really easy to do once you know how. The trick is to make sure you add a variety of materials to your bin. Composting is possible even if you only have a small yard. The free training session will show people how, what and why to compost, including the basics and how to compost cooked food waste’.
