elcome to the September edition. As editor of magazines and working 2 months ahead on the next issues, it seems to fast track time and muddle with your mind. It’s hard to talk about British Summertime ending when September is just starting and the sun has finally come out! Clocks go back on 28th October, bringing shorter days and long dark evenings – sorry for being depressing! On the plus side I love my winter wardrobe so much more than my summer clothes, and evenings spent with warming coal fires provide for good compensation. For those with real fires, be sure to buy in your coal and wood supplies soon. Maybe it is because of this need to compensate for the passing of summer that autumn comes with a flurry of local events. Amongst many highlights, Last Night of the Proms at Joseph Rowntree Theatre will be raising funds for the York Branch of the Myasthenia Gravis Society. Supporting people with neurological and respiratory illnesses, this is a really valued cause and Ron Middlemas, along with the local group, work tirelessly to help raise the necessary funds to

ew Earswick Musical Society are proud to present the Wizard of Oz as their next production at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, on the 7th – 11th November 2012. The Wizard of Oz, tells the story of Dorothy Gale (played by Jessica Bannister) from Kansas, and her pet dog Toto. Dorothy dreams of a wonderful land (“Over the Rainbowâ€?) but then she and Toto are caught in a terrifying storm. A cyclone lifts their home from Kansas and carries them over the rainbow into the beautiful, magical land of Oz. Dorothy finds herself in Munchkinland, and is hailed as a heroine by its villagers after Dorothy’s house fell on the Wicked Witch if the East (“Ding Dong the Witch is Deadâ€?). Unfortunately the dead Witch has a sister the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Perri Barley) who wants revenge on Dorothy. Dorothy asks the Munchkins how to get home and is comforted by the good Sorceress of The North (played by Stephanie Crossley) who urges her to go to the Emerald City to visit the powerful Wizard of Oz (played by Geoff Walker). Along the way, Dorothy and Toto are joined with other magical characters of Oz, the Scarecrow (played by Paul Blenkiron) joins Dorothy to meet the great Wizard so he may give him a brain (“If I only had a Brainâ€?) Next, Dorothy, Toto and the Scarecrow meet a Tin Man (played by Richard Rodgers) who is upset as he does not have a heart (“If I only had a Heartâ€?). Finally, the four travellers encounter the Cowardly Lion (played by Stephen Tearle) and he expresses his feelings of being a “dandy Lionâ€? (“If I only had the Nerveâ€?) and decides to join the others on their journey. The five friends eventually reach the Emerald City and are welcomed by Gloria (played by Amy Fletcher) who happily gives them a tour of her home (“Merry old Land of Ozâ€?). Canal du Midi

in the South of France
n 1996, the Canal du Midi became the first canal in the world to receive World Heritage status, as one of the ‘greatest engineering feats of modern times’ and ‘outstanding landscape fashioned by man’. Designed to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean across south west France, it had been planned since Roman times but work did not start until 1667, taking 14 years and 15,000 people to complete. Sadly, the engineer Pierre Paul Riquet passed away just months before the royal
barge opened the first stretch in his native town of Béziers, in 1681. From Toulouse, where it joins the Canal de Garonne, to the vast Etang de Thau on the Mediterranean, the 245 km long waterway is dotted with over 300 supporting structures, including bridges, locks and canal aqueducts invented by Riquet to cross streams and rivers. The canal tunnel in Malpas was also a world’s first, completed in secret in just a week before the authorities had a chance to find out. They had refused permission on safety grounds. The tunnel remains one of the highlights along the route, rivalled only by Fonserannes, a steep staircase of seven locks and now a listed monument. For 200 years or so, the canal brought wealth to the region, encouraging agriculture, trade and related business, from boat yards to inns. Having turned down the canal because of the cost, the town of Carcassonne soon realised its mistake and agreed eventually to finance a diversion. Inevitably, the advent of the railway brought commercial trade to an end but right across Languedoc, the Canal du Midi is alive and well, an integral part of the landscape, meandering past lock-keepers’ cottages, hill top castles and red-roofed villages nestling among vineyards and sunflower fields. Fed by reservoirs from the Black Mountain, or foothills of the central range, shaded by plane trees, pines and cypresses which stabilise the banks and preserve moisture, it’s a peaceful haven for holiday barges, yachts and cruisers. Fishermen doze on the banks, swans and ducks nest in the reeds and the old tow path doubles up as a cycling and walking trail. For those who cruise along the canal, there is plenty of excitement, working the locks, ducking under low bridges, heading into the tunnel, and plenty to see, from Marseillan and the nearby oyster beds to the medieval walled town of Carcassonne, the largest in Europe, or Toulouse, the vibrant ‘pink city’ basking on the banks of the Garonne. There are picturesque harbours along the way, Castelnaudary, Le Somail, Capestang, wine tasting cellars, flower-draped inns, nature reserves, home to peacock butterflies and 200 species of birds, and glistening lagoons where flamingos feed among the islands. In Port Lauragais, the Pierre Paul Riquet Centre is dedicated to the history of the canal while at the nearby Seuil de Naurouze, the highest point on the route and the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, an obelisk has been erected in Riquet’s honour. The Farmer’s CarT reCipe....
Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Melted Cheese 1 Pumpkin (3-4lb) 1 tbsp groud nut oil 1 large onion (peeled & finely chopped) 1.5 pints chicken or vegetable stock 15fl oz milk 1 oz butter Freshly grated nutmeg Salt & freshly milled black pepper 4oz Gruyere or Fontina Cheese (cut into 1/4 inch pieces) 2oz of the above cheese coarsely grated 6 tsp creme fraiche Croutons & Parsley for garnish
1. Cut the pumpkin into quarters and remove all the seeds. Place on a baking sheet and brush with the oil, season and place on a high shelf in the oven to roast for 20-30 minutes until tender. Then leave to cool. 2. Melt the butter, add the onions and cook for 20 minutes without a lid, stir from time to time. Add the stock and milk to the onions and bring to simmering point. 3. Scoop out the pumpkin flesh and then add to the pan and simmer for 15-20 minutes. 4. Process the soup to a puree and sieve if desired. Add salt, pepper and nutmeg for seasoning to taste. Re-heat to simmering point.

Autumn
Pudding Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.
1. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool. 2. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. INGREDIENTS 175g caster sugar 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced 100g raspberries 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced 100g blackcurrants or blueberries 100g blackberries 10 slices thick-sliced white bread Extra fruit, to decorate

3. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. 4. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. 5. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Mud Fever in Horses

lthough mud fever is a condition that usually affects horses during the winter months, this summer has been so wet and dismal, we are seeing a high number of cases now. It is characterised by inflamed, crusty and oozing skin at the back of the lower leg of the horse, especially in the heel region. It often affects white legs (more sensitive skin) and tends to affect hind limbs more so than forelimbs. Mud fever mostly occurs in horses that spend some or all of their time living outdoors and occurs when the skin becomes wet and muddy, and therefore more susceptible to invasion by a bacteria called dermatophilus congolensis, which thrives in damp conditions, and can be difficult to ward off until environmental conditions change.

Prevention of mud fever can be difficult in winter months when fields are constantly wet and muddy, but you can help to protect your horses heels by applying a waterproof barrier cream to prevent wet penetrating the skin. In horses with feathered limbs, it can be helpful to clip away the hair along the backs of the legs, which will help the skin dry more quickly. It will also help if you wash mud off the legs of your horse each night and then dry them thoroughly. If you notice soreness, oozing or scabs on your horses lower limbs then you should contact your veterinary surgeon, as, if mud fever is diagnosed, antibiotics are often required to help fight off the bacterial infection. Mitsubishi Outlander '12 N ew car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty
big deal. So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is efficiency, space and refinement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it. In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a
time when design is at the forefront of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives. However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a four-wheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. OCTOBER 2012 • ISSUE 84 but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/ km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg. The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that made up our test route. The 2.2-litre is likely to be good for 125mph and will crack the benchmark 60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refinement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too. If we were to be picky, we did find the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners. New technology, for Mitsubishi at least, will also make a debut on the Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example. What will come as standard is yet to be finalised, but expect the lot on the top-of-the-range model. There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate. But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot floor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely flat. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run. Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole offering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year offering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very different story indeed.

axby Shotokan Karate Club is getting involved with Just 30’s campaign to get people to do 30 minutes exercise a day. The Club is holding a special free class for the over 50’s as part of the Eng-AGE 50+ games on Monday 1st October. Haxby Shotokan Karate Club has members ranging from 5 years to in their 60’s. Chief Instructor Mike Gude, age 63, is keen to teach karate to anyone who wants to learn, whatever their age or fitness level. Brenda, who has just celebrated her 60th birthday, has been a member of Haxby Shotokan Karate Club for over 2 years had wanted to learn karate for a long time but had never plucked up the courage to start training. Brenda said “Eventually I took the plunge and went along to one of Haxby Shotokan Karate Club’s training sessions. They made me feel so welcome and their help and encouragement has helped me obtain my 5th Kyu. The group was founded in 1988 to provide help and support to cardiac patients and their families following their release from hospital. the group meets every month at the Folk Hall at New Earswick on the first Monday of each month (second if Bank Holiday occurs). Timber
Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less long-lasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a wood-effect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a high-pressure laminate surface.
Carpet
Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile is the toughest). Natural wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fire-resistant, but expensive; while cheaper, man-made fibres may look unattractive or not wear

well. A popular solution is a combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a good quality underlay is essential.
Natural fibres
In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hardwearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring.
Hard surfaces
Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and waterresistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array

Sheet flooring
Softer and warmer than stone or timber, sheet floorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork – are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to lay (even on slightly uneven floors), and are easy to clean. Lino is a traditional material made from natural ingredients, and has its own lovely patina, while vinyl is a PVC-based man-made material, which comes in a huge range of textures and patterns, many of them good imitations of stone, wood or ceramic tiles. Cork, often under-rated, is hard-wearing, resilient to water and offers an interesting, natural look.

The late poet Dorothy Frances Gurney wrote that: One is nearer God’s Heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth. That may be true, but preparing the garden, for growing vegetables, is its own special form of purgatory. Nature conspires to make the task as difficult as possible, so we took it in stages.
Step One – Peat-less pots are go. We chose green bean and mange tout seeds, and filled the little pots from our compost bin. I soon discovered that it’s a fine line between moist and soggy. Step Two - Mark out the plot, somewhere beyond the cypress tree’s reach to allow for the possibility of direct sunlight. That’s the easy part - it makes you feel like you’re retracing the first, tentative steps of our hunter-gatherer ancestors when they realised that a little porridge might be nice for a change. Step Three - Dig for Pyrrhic victory, trusting that the veg will subsequently be worthy of your muscles’ sacrifice. Once the soil has been dug, it’s time to remove the grass and weeds. The chickens loved some of the grass, but the worms received a reprieve, as they were on active service. Step Four - A ginger beer and a bag of crisps for me. Then the soil needs to be turned over and broken up, to help aerate it. I also removed the stones, which is especially important if you’re planting from seeds. Step Five - Dig in the pots when the little plants look old enough to fend for themselves. Once they were installed, I added enough bamboo canes and netting to deter any opportunistic gastropod-
about-garden. Or so I thought. Within a day of completing our defences we were invaded, in a flagrant act of mollusc aggression. We employed slug pellets; we - that is, I - made random security patrols. Enemy snails were sent to the chickens for summary execution, also known by the chooks as ‘snack time’. I did try and reason with the slugs, principally because the chickens weren’t keen on them, but settled for either eviction into the back lane or incarceration in the garden waste bin. But still they came. My vigilance gradually paid off and our plant casualties decreased. Then came that magical day when the first veg flowers appeared. We weren’t out of the woods (or slugs) yet though and you’d be surprised by the amount of slug pellets we used.

Having to play nettle roulette, when picking the mange tout, because I couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the weeding, was less of a joy. The mange tout still tasted great though and it has me thinking about nettle soup. Next time I’ll let the beanlings grow taller before I plant them in, to give them more of a fighting chance. I’ll also make my own peat-less pots out of old newspaper. It’s the Blue Peter approach to green living. sort of opportunity, it made me really appreciate what we have in the UK with free education for all giving us the opportunity to be whoever or whatever we want to be. The biggest highlight of the trip for me was playing football with the locals and the endless hours of ‘duck-duck-goose’ or the ‘hokey cokey’ with primary school children. If I ever had the opportunity to go again, I wouldn’t hesitate, and if anybody was entertaining the idea I would strongly recommend going for a gap year, it’s no word of a lie when they say it changes your life. Hello again, This summer – as some of you may already know, I spent a month sleeping under a mosquito net and bathing in a bucket of cold water in rural Kenya with a group of people from my school. We travelled to three different African communities where we helped with various types of project work which included everything from building a farm fence to cementing a classroom wall. Each task helped to sustain the local area in some way. At the final camp – Muhaka, we spent many an afternoon doing jobs which did seem rather pointless until we saw the bigger picture. The best example of this was the bottle filling… The majority of rural African areas have no recycling at all, so by using the bottles we were preventing them from going to landfill. We used them as a kind of filler in cement, to stabilise small walls and waterproof vegetable patches helping to create an area where vegetables, fruits and herbs could be grown successfully. One of the main things that struck me in Africa was not necessarily the heat, or even the camels wandering down the road, but how happy and content all of the young children were despite the fact that they have next to nothing. Kenyan children appreciate every little thing they have, making the most out of what they’ve been given, and they still manage to come out the other end with a grin. We visited Itinyi Primary the day before their GCSE-equivalent exams, yet when we arrived only half of the school (aged about 6 – 22) were there revising. This was because the other half couldn’t afford to pay the 200 Kenyan Shillings (about £1.60) per person per term to pay the teachers, and seeing as the resources belonged to school, they couldn’t revise at home either. They had to just come into the exam and leave again without any extra help. After seeing 40-50 children crammed into what apparently passed for a classroom, all so enthusiastic to learn because they felt privileged to get that
