Editors Letter

elcome to the September edition. As our summer ends and we return from holiday breaks, extravagant or low-key, local or far away, we are clearly refreshed and looking to make tracks with a rush of local events. And typical of this time are our village shows, such as the Strensall Show on Saturday 3rd September, where we can witness seemingly timeless devotion in pursuit of that perfect leek, turnip, set of 3 onions, 3 flowering heads, or rhubarb jam. I am always amazed at how good the produce looks, and reminded of my failings when I have tried to grow vegetables –too small, ridiculously shaped or diseased to show at my local event! Maybe next year I will put more effort in.... With an eye to our younger readers, we welcome a new columnist to the Handy Mag. Emily, a local

i, my name is Emily and I am going to be writing a new monthly column for the Handy Mag. It’s quickly coming to the end of the summer holidays, and it’ll be back to the monotonous school routine before you know it. If, like me, you are going back into year 11 then I wish you luck in all of your upcoming exams, if not then enjoy it whilst you can - and make the most of it! Most people go back to school either feeling refreshed from a long busy holiday and ready for working, or feeling flat having just spent their annual break sat around with little to do other than update their facebook page. Not me. I have spent the majority of my holidays rushing from Pony Camp, to a weekend away with a friend, down to Granny’s, back home for about 25 minutes (in which time I am expected to unpack and re-pack!), to another friend’s house and then straight up to Northumberland for a camping trip! Phew... My return to school will be a chance to regain normality, do something constructive and get the motivation to fit in a few dog walks. For those of you who have a canine companion, you will know how much more appealing a hot drink sat by the computer is, when the alternative is taking the dog out for a walk on a typical rainy Yorkshire summer’s day. This is why I advise you now, if it is a warm day (which are becoming more and more rare) then either step outside with a friend, go to the beach with the family or go on the internet and search for walks you can do. And take the dog with you! Good luck back at school; and see you next month,

Meals in Minutes Perfect for outdoor eating, this filling Mediterranean flavoured portable feast makes a change from the usual sandwiches and sausage rolls.

Picnic Loaf

• To serve 4 people, you’ll need a large round, oval or oblong fresh crusty loaf. Slice the top off and scoop out the inside of the loaf, leaving a 1cm (1/2in) thick wall. • Brush the inside wall of the loaf with some good quality olive oil. For extra flavour spread a thin layer of red or green pesto sauce or sun dried tomato paste inside the loaf.

• Choose a colourful selection of 3-4 fillings. Cold chicken, smoked ham, salami, cheese, firm sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables (such as peppers, courgettes or aubergines), baby spinach leaves or fresh herbs like parsley and basil are all ideal. Phnom Penh Cambodia’s beguiling capital

Sizzling in the sun or drenched in monsoon rain, Phnom Penh takes you by surprise. Chaotic and relaxed all in one, with bustling lanes and tree-lined boulevards, Buddhist temples, exotic markets and three rivers, the Mekong, the Bassac and the Sap, meeting within sight of the Royal Palace.

Wat, cargo vessels, sampans and frail tourist boats bobbing at anchor. Sail down to the Mekong and you discover bamboo houses along the shore and floating villages where children dive in brown waters and fishermen haul in their nets in the setting sun. The city roofs glow coppery gold across the water and when the cool evening breeze sweeps along the promenade, locals come down to the river, friends holding hands, families sharing a picnic, hawkers selling incense and lotus bloom for the shrines. Flags from many nations fly high above it all and across Sisowath Quay, outdoor cafés with plush cushions and rattan chairs add a whiff of colonial days. Phnom Penh’s main attractions are conveniently close to the waterfront. Built during the French protectorate, the Royal Palace is a delightful oasis of lawns and trees, dotted with colonnades, spires and overlapping roofs. You find a pavilion donated by Napoleon III, an ‘Emerald Buddha’ made of crystal and a Pagoda claiming 5000 silver tiles, mostly tucked under a carpet. Visiting monks pose for photographs among

the bougainvillea and marvel at the lofty flourishes of Khmer architecture. Others head for the nearby National Museum and its fabulous treasures displayed in a maze of lotus ponds and open galleries. Today, Buddhism is back after the dark Pol Pot years and spirit houses and temples pop up all over town. Most popular is Wat Phnom, perched on the only hill around. On this spot some 600 years ago, Lady Penh found sacred Buddha images, thus giving the city its name, the hill (Phnom) of Penh. City folk climb up the steps, past mythological lions and snakes, to burn incense and make a wish. Fortune tellers make a brisk trade, monkeys scamper on the slopes and the resident elephant waits for his next ride around the park. Phnom Penh is easy to explore on foot, as long as you don’t cross too many roads. Streets are on a grid pattern, enclosed by Parisian-style boulevards fragrant with frangipani. You find gold shops and shoe-shine boys, tailors and printers working on the pavements, smoke-filled barbecues and honking traffic ready to pounce at countdown lights. Rickshaws and bicycles weave through it all, laden with multicoloured balloons or household goods, orange-robed monks carry alms bowls and umbrellas and now and then a wedding party files through an entrance draped in lilies and silver bananas. What looks like bottles of squash at the roadside is motorbike fuel. The old French Quarter is worth a peep for its leafy lanes and stylish mansions but for local colour, the markets are a must, whether you are looking for fresh fruit or fried spiders, bags, books, clocks, silk, fake designer goods or stone carvings. Bargaining is hard work but there is always time to relax at the end of the day and watch the sunset over the Mekong.

Lungworm A

s I’m writing this, the summer holidays are just beginning and people are venturing off on their travels. One of the advantages of a ‘staycation’ the UK has to be the ease of taking pets, especially dogs, along with you. When travelling abroad we consider the possibility of diseases that are not common at home, both for ourselves and our pets. But what about when we travel to different parts of our own country? One such condition that affects our dogs is lungworm, caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum. Relatively new to the UK, Lungworm is becoming more prevalent, particularly in the south and south west of the country and south Wales. It is currently rarely seen in Yorkshire but could become more widespread in the future. The adult worms live in the right side of the heart and the blood vessels around it, where they lay their eggs. The larvae hatch out and move into the lungs, from where they are coughed up, swallowed by the dog and then shed in the faeces. Once in the faeces, slugs and snails eat the larvae which then undergo further development in these intermediate hosts before being transferred back into dogs when either the slug or snail is eaten or by consumption of their slime. The larvae then burrow through the gut wall and end up travelling in the bloodstream back to the heart and pulmonary vessels to start the whole lifecycle all over again. The whole process takes just 1-2 months. Dogs can accidently eat slugs and snails by drinking from puddles or outside water bowls. Urban foxes are also hosts for lungworm. which eat the larvae from slugs and carry them within their systems until they themselves are eaten by a dog or fox. Any dog can become infected with lungworm but it is probably more common in young dogs, less than 2 years of age, and it can be fatal if left untreated.

Symptoms

When a dog is infected with lungworm they can show symptoms in 3 different ways, 1. Cardio-respiratory- signs you would see are coughing, difficulty breathing, breathing faster than normal or becoming breathless more easily than normal on walks. 2. Coagulopathies- this is where the blood doesn’t clot properly and you would see bleeding into the skin, excessive bruising, prolonged bleeding from wounds, nose bleeds, pale mucous membranes or bleeding into the eye. 3. Neurological- this is involving the nervous system and you would see behavioural changes, fits, paralysis, inco-ordination or spinal pain. The presenting signs of a dog with lungworm infection are varied and can affect a lot of different organ systems in the body, making diagnosing lungworm quite tricky. The other difficulty is that their isn’t one specific diagnostic test for the condition. Diagnosis is usually based on a mixture of the presenting signs and history along with diagnostic tests including blood samples, x rays and looking for the larvae either in washes from the lungs or in faecal samples.

Treatment

There are 2 main ways to treat lungworm, one with a ‘spot-on’ on the back of the neck and the other with a course of worming granules given over 7 days. The spot-on is a one off treatment with only a small number of dogs needing a second treatment, it also protects against several other parasites, including fleas, ear mites, lice and mites and some types of worms. It is also the mainstay of lungworm prevention when applied every 4 weeks Other ways in which to minimise the risk of your dog picking up lungworm are to clean up faeces as soon as possible and reduce the likelihood of your dog coming into contact with slugs and snails and their slime trails. This can be done by not letting your dog drink from puddles or dirty water bowls outside and keeping paths and patios clear of slime trails and all toys inside the house when not in use. Luckily in Yorkshire we are yet to have a serious problem with lungworm but with changes in climate and increases in travelling its still something we need to be aware of. Cat Protection This month York CP is seeking a home for two of our lovely longstay ladies.

he first lady is Tinker and she has been with us since the beginning of the year. After been thrown out by her original owners, tiny Tinker found herself straying around the local area trying to find food. She was infested with fleas and had developed a flea allergy causing her fur to fall out and become sore. We got a call from a member of the public who had been feeding Tinker who wondered if we could help so Tinker came into the adoption centre to find a new home. She was initially very shy and had little fur or fat to keep her warm over the bad winter we had. It has taken weeks to get Tinker into fighting fit 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

condition but now she is raring to go. Her fur has grown back beautifully and she continues to put on a healthy amount of weight. Tinker enjoys chatting to staff and loves human company. She is, however, still a little shy when it comes to physical contact. She needs to learn to trust you before she will show her true personality but when she does its worth it. She would be a lovely addition to any household with no other pets or very young children. She needs somewhere she can gain confidence and trust in a few people and continue to blossom into the affectionate cat we know she is deep down. The second lady is Lilly. Lilly came to us as a pregnant stray so her long-stay is not down to her been un-adoptable, she’s just had two bundles of fur to raise! Lilly gave birth to two gorgeous chubby

boys around 12 weeks ago and would really like a home of her own now they have gone. She is incredibly affectionate and loves nothing more than giving ‘hugs’ to anyone who offers attention. She would happily live in most homes, even with children and other cats. We’re hoping both these little ladies won’t hang around for long so please contact the centre if you are interested in these girls or any other cats we may have at the moment – 01904 760356. HOMES & GARDENS A conservatory extends summer through to winter and creates the perfect link between the house and the garden. Katherine Sorrell looks at ways to make your conservatory a space that’s functional, beautiful and useable all year round.

uilding a conservatory is one of the most popular home improvements. But aside from the question of whether it will add value to your property, will it add value to your life? A good place to start is with the overall colour scheme. By painting the walls the same colour as the adjacent room, you’ll ensure that the conservatory really feels like part of your home, rather than a last-minute addition. Use the floor, too, as a bridge between the conservatory and the house. Tiled, slate, stone and terracotta floors are beautiful but tend to be rather cold and hard underfoot, so it would be a great idea to scatter one or two rugs to add instant warmth and character, perhaps in a colour used in the next room so as to create a visual link. With the background colours, textures and patterns established, it’s time to consider the key pieces of furniture – probably a comfortable sofa and some armchairs, perhaps a dining table and chairs – and soft furnishings. Many people choose rattan furniture for a conservatory, and it can look fabulous, adding a touch of exotic, Far Eastern style to the room. lanterns and carved-wood mirrors. For blinds, cushions and throws, choose fabrics in sand, mustard, deep red, orange and earthy brown. Alternatively, you could aim for a cool, New England look by teaming white-painted rattan with cottons and linens in plains and checks, tongue-and-groove cabinetry and simple floor and table lamps with pale fabric shades. Or go for a soft, English country look by adding chintzy cushions, painted ceramics, botanical prints, delicate chandeliers and vases of informally arranged flowers. Another favourite in a conservatory is metal furniture, though it’s best to avoid chairs and tables specifically designed for the garden, as they can look unsophisticated and clumsy; instead, opt for curly, decorative metalwork, which looks really pretty, especially painted in a soft pastel colour. Team with toile de Jouy fabrics, old metal café signs, oversized chocolate mugs, painted wall clocks and enamelware with French lettering for a conservatory à la Francais. The finishing touches for this look should be sleek, chic and minimal – an oversized floor lamp, perhaps; a piece or two in acrylic (maybe a curved coffee table or a dining chair), a modern chandelier and maybe some framed blackand-white photographs. Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter, and this is something that’s ideally considered at the planning stage – though a retrofit is always possible. The options are simply to extend your current central heating to the conservatory, placing radiators against the dwarf walls, or to fit underfloor heating, in the form of either warm-water pipes or electric cables. Some systems use convectors, set under the perimeter of the floor and covered with decorative grilles. In the summer months, your main consideration will be to keep the conservatory cool enough to be pleasant to sit in. As well as opening windows and vents, you can provide a cool waft of air with a central ceiling fan, and block dazzling sunlight with blinds, which will control the heat in the summer and insulate in the winter. Students have designs on new book

wo school friends have designed the cover of a new book which shines a fascinating spotlight on the history of New Earswick in York. Angela Wilkinson and Enrique De Obaldia won a competition to work on the book, which explores the history and development of education, learning and the community in New Earswick since it was founded by Joseph Rowntree in the early 20th century. The competition was staged by York-based graphic design company Red Publications, which created and printed the 192-page paperback for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Around 50-80% of new mums get the ‘baby blues’ when they feel, not surprisingly, exhausted, anxious and weepy during the first few days after the birth. This usually disappears without the need for treatment about 10 days after the birth.

Postnatal depression (PND)

If you feel depressed, it’s important to let family and friends know how you feel so that you can get support.

Around 10-15% of women will suffer more severe postnatal depression, sometimes weeks or months after the birth of their baby. About half of cases occur within the first three months, and 75% of cases by six months. These mums experience more powerful and prolonged symptoms of depression such as: • constant weepiness • anxiety, tension • difficulty in bonding with the baby • loss of libido • sleep disturbances, restlessness • exhaustion • feeling isolated or living in a ‘bubble’ • feelings of guilt and resentment. Many women do not realise they are suffering from postnatal depression and battle on without getting the help they need. It is often women who have high expectations of themselves and of motherhood that find the reality of caring for a new

If you feel low or depressed, don’t try to cope on your own and don’t be afraid to ask for help – all new mums need the support of family and friends. Don’t put yourself under pressure to keep the house clean or prepare big meals – rest when your baby sleeps. 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Your GP can discuss treatment options with you, such as counselling and anti-depressants and direct you to local mothers’ groups which can be of enormous support to new mums.

Puerperal Psychosis

A very small percentage of women (between one and three in every 1,000), suffer from puerperal psychosis, which causes severe mental breakdown and may include symptoms such as manic behaviour and hallucinations. Treatment options include hospitalisation, drugs and counselling.

Getting support

Being at home with a new baby that seems to need constant feeding and changing, who takes all your attention and leaves you feeling exhausted, can be an isolating experience. Take up any offers of help and support from friends and family. If you feel you are not coping, always talk to your GP or health visitor.

If you feel you are not coping, talk to your health visitor or GP – and don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed that you’re not handling motherhood as well as other mums seem to be. Talk to other mums – you’ll find they’re probably feeling just as overwhelmed as you are.

Despite greater awareness of PND, it’s thought that only about half of mothers who need help are getting it. So don’t keep your feelings to yourself – the sooner you talk about it, the quicker you can get support and, if needed, treatment.

It’s the first five-seater, all-electric car in production, producing zero emissions and costing just £2 to ‘fill up’. The benefits don’t end there either. Buyers enjoy zero road tax and company car drivers won’t be clobbered by any Benefit in Kind. That means someone driving a 1.6litre diesel Ford Focus, paying £4,000 company car tax per year, would see that amount back in their pay packets. What’s under the bonnet? A big fat electric motor. Flip the catch, show any non petrol-head the unit and most will be convinced it’s a standard engine – to the uninitiated it certainly looks that way. It’s the fat power cables that give the game away. That motor

produces 108bhp but it’s the big dollop of 280Nm of torque, available immediately, which really makes the difference. That’s equivalent to a Porsche Boxster and certainly makes the Leaf feel sprightly enough. What’s the spec like? Nissan made little noise about spec on the launch, concentrating more on the technology, but customers will be pleased to hear there’s lots to entertain. Headliners include sat nav and reversing camera as standard, as well as central locking, alloys, climate control, a CD player and electric windows and mirrors. The only option is a solar panel on the spoiler that tops up the 12v battery. That costs £250. What’s it like to drive? Nissan says the Leaf’s range

is 109 miles and has calculated 95 per cent of daily car travel is less than 25 miles and the average journey is 8.5 miles. There are two power modes, a normal and an eco. In eco, power is seriously reduced but the range improved and in normal the Leaf is surprisingly swift. What’s immediately apparent is how quiet the car is and how well it rides over bumps – you forget very quickly you’re driving an electric car. What does the press think of it? Autoblog said the Leaf could possibly be the most impressive car it has driven all year. Learn to meditate in 5 steps

Find a comfortable position, either cross-legged on a cushion or on a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight, not tense, so you are relaxed but alert. Place your hands comfortably in your lap, palms up, with your right hand on top of your left and thumbs lightly touching, and gently close your eyes. Become aware of the flow of thoughts running through your mind – you’ll notice a lot of memories, ‘stuff’ to do and problems to solve. Gradually try to let these go – you can pick them up again later! Then, check in with your body, and allow any tension or tightness in the body to fall away.

Start to observe your breath – without changing its natural rhythm, just watching. Gradually focus your mind on the sensation of breath in your nostrils as it enters and leaves your body. Simply stay with this one sensation for as long as possible, focusing on it single-pointedly. Distracting thoughts will inevitably arise – but try to resist becoming interested in them, allowing them to subside and disappear instead. You can practice this for one minute, five, twenty minutes – or hours and hours! It doesn’t matter how long you sit for, but a regular meditation practice will help you reduce stress and anxiety, improve your relationships and become happier and stronger.

Home compost improves the soil in your garden and healthy soil means healthy plants. t feels like a long time since I had any colleagues. Well, it’s 4½ years, to be precise; so yes, it is quite a long time since I had any colleagues. But is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have always maintained that the pleasure you derive from your job really derives from those you work with. Whatever you do, from the ludicrously cushy to the back-breakingly hard, you soon start to take it for granted. I’ve been a journalist for many years, and the work has always been interesting with a fair few perks, mainly in the form of subsidised travel and lavish dinners. Not so much now as when I was in the brewing trade press; but I still get the odd trip hither and yon and a few days in Brittany or Belgium now and again do relieve the monotony. It’s work, and that’s that. You come to take money for granted, too, whether you’re just making ends meet like me or raking in obscene piles of moolah. But rich or poor, people in my experience tend to structure their lives according to their expectations and once they’ve settled into a means-related pattern, and always assuming a modicum of security, money becomes a secondary issue. Colleagues, to me, are the one thing you can’t take for granted. Some of them you’ll hate. Some of them you’ll love. (Taking either of these to extremes, however, is not advisable!) Some of them you’ll gladly share a few bevvies and a good gossip with down the pub after work. Some of them, on the other hand – you only have to glimpse them in the office boozer and you’re heading straight for the bus stop. Of course if you have no colleagues, you have no irritants. The one with the irritating laugh. The one with the irritating cough or sneeze. The one with the irritating opinions. You have no enemies, either: Louise from marketing isn’t constantly cosying up to the boss and plotting to subjugate your department to hers. And, of course, you have no meetings. But you don’t get the good ones, either. Not just the after-work pint buddy, but the bloke who knows all about cars. The one who’s recovered from the cold you’ve just caught and can tell you exactly how long it’s likely to last and what remedy he/she found particularly efficacious.
