elcome to the September edition...

By the time you read this the holiday season will be almost over, our children will be in denial of the necessity of school and it seems we will have enjoyed a true summer; Wow! How good it has been to be able to complain about it being ‘too hot’ and for having ‘missed the day’ due to work! My daughter’s first weeks of the holidays were spent camping with Scouts - Duke of Edinburgh expedition on the moors, followed by a big week long international camp. It’s not that she is very noisy or demanding, messy yes, but you notice when she is not in the house! Scouts and Guides are such fantastic organisations. My two children have experienced camping, walking, abseiling, climbing, kayaking, archery and so much more. There’s nothing like it, and they gain so much from it; teamwork, confidence and social skills, stuff schools cannot always do so effectively. We are ever grateful to the group leaders who give up their time to make it all possible. Having been a local cub leader myself, I know how much hard work it is, balancing busy diaries, but its’ great fun and very rewarding. More volunteers are always needed, so if you would like to volunteer (no prior experience is necessary), why not chat to your local group leaders or district leaders– most are listed in the Handy Mag – about what help they might need. Our competition each month gets bigger and bigger. We receive more and more entries and when I meet people usually their first comment is about those annoying little characters we hide and how hard they are to find! Thank you to everyone who enters. His life is paralleled with that of English Barrister Sydney Carton, who is suffering the pain of unrequited love. The object of his affection: Darnay’s wife. Originally published in weekly instalments, it was a veritable Dickensian soap opera about the days of their lives and the build-up to the French Revolution.

Ken Kesey Told through the eyes of the seeminglymute American Indian, Chief Bromden, this is the story of the inmates at an Oregon State mental hospital, where Nurse Ratched rules the wards with a tyrannical arm. Into this mix comes McMurphy, the twinkle-in-his-eye, cat-amongthe-pigeons livewire who’s ready to turn Ratched’s regime on its head. Kesey’s masterpiece is moving and compelling, very funny at points and at others, absolutely terrifying.

roma all started with a vision of a place right at the heart of the community where people of all ages could chat, laugh, relax, enjoy each other’s company... and great coffee. During its 5 years Aroma Coffee Shop in Haxby has achieved all of this and more. Set up by Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church in 2008 it has become a beacon in the community, a place where everyone is welcome. Aroma have ploughed profits back into the local community by way of an Aroma Community Fund which has supported a range of worthwhile local causes, and among other things we’ve hosted an evening support group for carers of sufferers from dementia, we’ve run free courses to help parents of children moving from Primary to Secondary school, and parents of teenagers dealing with the problem of drug abuse. All of the food is fairly traded because it enables some of the poorest in the world to receive a fair wage, and locally sourced because local suppliers play an important part in our community. During the week beginning Monday September 9th Aroma will be reducing prices by 15% to reflect what they were back in 2008 as a thank you to our loyal customers, and we plan to give away 30 £5 vouchers by entering customers into a draw. Aroma would like to thank their fantastic staff and wonderful team of volunteers who have all helped

them since they started – all 140 of them – by holding a celebration party in Haxby Memorial Hall on Saturday September 7th. There will be a short service of Holy Communion in the shop at 4pm on Sunday 8th September followed by free coffee and cake. The week will end with a service of thanksgiving at which everyone will be welcome at Haxby & Wigginton Methodist church at 10.30 on Sunday 15th September.

“You know what I’d like to try? Potholing.” You could have knocked Ken down with a feather. He said, “Where’s this idea come from?” She explained that Donna tried it recently and had been raving about it ever since. Cheryl never liked to be outdone by Donna. That’s sisters for you. Ken joked, “Aren’t you worried about breaking a nail?” And she said tartly, “Sometimes, Ken, you’ve just got to get a bit dirty.” He was surprised and said,

very well for him but Ken knew how long Cheryl spent on her hair every morning. She gave that mop more attention than she gave him. Reluctantly, she clipped the thing on muttering about health and safety gone mad. Ken didn’t dare let her see him laughing. They assembled at the mouth of the cave and Frank gave an introductory talk on potholing. Ken wished Cheryl could have paid more attention but she was texting Donna. She insisted she could text and listen at the

One by one, crocodile-style, they entered the mouth of the cave. Cheryl did Ken proud. She squeezed through every tight passageway, crawled on her hands and knees, and even dragged herself along on her stomach, getting absolutely filthy with not a peep of complaint. Though Ken was right at the back and couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying anyway. But Cheryl did it, and that’s the main thing. “You’re a star Cheryl!” Ken said, as they emerged, squelching, into the daylight. Yet Cheryl seemed bewildered.

“Fine, you arrange it.” So he left it with her. They turned up on the day at a car park on the edge of Bower Crags and met the instructor, a nice lad called Frank. There was also a couple from Kidderminster and an older chap who never spoke. Frank took one look at Cheryl’s peep toe mules, and said,

he majority of the cats that we see at York Cats Protection are happy and confident creatures, though we do see our fair share of shy and timid cats too. Cats like these need extra special care and attention to help settle them in, but once you have spent the time earning their trust these shy cats can often turn out to be the friendliest and loveliest cats of all. One funny shy little cat we have in the Centre at the moment is Willow. Before she came to us Willow had to share her home with many other cats and she found having to compete with so many other cats for food, sleeping areas, fuss from people, toileting areas etc. to be very stressful. This meant she became very shy and spent lots of her time hiding away and getting very little positive human interaction. During the time Willow has been in our care we have made a concerted effort to bring her out of her shell. It’s a gradual process but we are seeing improvements and it’s encouraging to see Willow become more

Willow interested in people and her surroundings. Willow enjoys playing and can usually be coaxed out of hiding with some tactical string wiggling! 40 YEARS ON! M

ore than 50 members of The River Foss Society celebrated 40 years to the day, and in the same room at the New Earswick Folk Hall, the foundation of the society by the late Bill Sessions, Michael Fife and Peter Walls in 1973.

The early members also set about establishing a middledistance footpath, The Foss Walk, following as closely as possible the twenty-one mile course of the river as it wends its way from its source at Pond Head, in the hills near Yearsley, to join the Ouse at York Castle.

Members were also treated to a watery themed insect inspired entertainment ‘Buzzing by the River’ by poet, photographer and performer Annelise Emmans Dean, together with an exhibition of photographs in and around the River Foss across the years.

Vice Chair, John Hampshire, one of the original early members spoke movingly that the driving force of the River Foss society had always been ‘to keep the environment at its heart’ and noted that the issues of access and protection of public rights of way were still being fought, citing a current issue on the Foss Walk, now being taken up by the Highways Agency.

Concerned about the growing pollution and unhealthy state of the River Foss in the 1970s, the Society was set up to improve the river environment and find ways to balance the needs of nature and of growing urbanisation, long before these issues were as clearly recognised as they are today. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

‘Today, the River Foss Society has a growing membership and organises regular walks, talks, events and visits, and sends out a quarterly newsletter,’ said Chair, John Millett, ‘The River

Treatment is often based on reducing the symptoms, however, when persistent, preventative treatment may be necessary. Dental Caries (tooth decay) - Your Dentist will examine your teeth for signs of decay and take x-rays on average every 2 years, although the frequency depends on your oral health. Holes inside teeth are not visible to the naked eye and which if not treated will in time progress to a dental abscess. The tooth becomes hypersensitive and pain varies from a dull aching throb to intense sharp shooting pain which can shoot into the opposing jaw and may not respond to pain relief. When teeth reach this stage there are generally two options: remove them or provide root canal therapy. Periodontal (Gum) Disease - Like decay this has several levels and is most commonly associated with failure to remove the plaque fully when brushing. Starting as Gingivitis (inflammation of the gingivae), you may notice some blood after brushing. Left untreated this will progress to Periodontal Disease which can cause toothache, even though its origins are in the gum. It can lead to bone loss and extraction of otherwise healthy teeth.

Sadly too many people wait until they have toothache before attending the dentist and this can significantly reduce their treatment options and increase the complexity and cost of treatment.

s I entered the prep room, I could see Phil at the sink, he didn’t see me as he had his back to me. He was scrubbing his hands furiously and I couldn’t help wondering, what on earth could have happened to make him so dirty.

To my right there were double doors with narrow windows set in them. I wondered what was behind them, as it seemed, given the sounds coming from the room beyond, this was where all the action was taking place. If I stepped back behind the prep table I could just see through the window. I rather started to wish I hadn’t looked though, as I saw the nurse stood over a male dog, which had been tied down to a table with ropes. He was attached to a machine by a large pipe going into his mouth. The nurse was bent over him; a horrible growling noise filled the air as her hands moved up and down over his stomach. I didn’t want to watch any more, but I just couldn’t

tear myself away. I saw the poor dog’s hair coming off in clumps. Next, the nurse reached for the Hoover and attempted to suck the helpless dog up it. Thankfully the dog remained on the table. She obviously realised her mistake. It was clear even to me, the dog was to large to fit up the Hoover spout. She took a moment before deciding on her next mode of torture. The dog was covered in a soapy liquid and scrubbed all over his stomach area - bath!! Agghh could this get any worse? It would seem I had found the operating theatre but I had no idea what went on in them. How could Phil work here knowing what went on? Thankfully he finished washing himself and entered the operating room through the double doors. I was not sure why, perhaps he had been really dirty, but he had got changed into what looked like a dress! Phil in a dress! This was certainly turning into a strange and not so pleasant day. I tried to calm myself, ok, so Phil was displaying some strange behaviour and I had certainly seen a side to him I was not familiar with, but it did not mean he would condone the wicked nurse’s actions. He would put a stop to this barbaric behaviour I was sure of it. I knew him better than anyone. I watched him as he exchanged words with the nurse. But something wasn’t right. He was smiling and rather than setting the dog free, he was taking instruments from the nurse. With a scalpel in his hand he cut into the dog. I watched in horror, this was not the man I knew, who I went home with every night, this man was clearly deranged. I let out an involuntary yelp.

Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. Some weeds are pretty, some less so, but one thing they all have in common is that they are indeed growing where you don’t want them, and may be causing your garden plants to suffer. STOP STOWAWAYS

When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) with their tiny rosettes or leaves and pretty little white flower heads.

SPAGHETTI ROOTS

Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. If you’ve just taken on a new plot of land, be it a garden or an allotment, there is a good chance that it’ll be riddled with at least one of these spaghetti-rooted weeds. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.

LAWN LOUTS

Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. It may be a slow process but will allow you to dig them out individually.

DEEP ROOTED PROBLEMS

Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run. I have recently discovered a great pocket-sized weeder, originally from New Zealand but now manufactured over here. It’s brilliant for removing this sort of weed and others such as small thistles, creeping buttercups and so forth. Find out more in the ‘products’ section of www. pippagreenwood.com. at this time of year, you’ll run in to trouble as the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then.

An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. CAREFUL WHAT YOU COMPOST

Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems.

Sailing around clusters of tiny islands, you spot a few huts on this one, a shrine on that one, a school on another, a clinic or a couple of craft stalls. The islands are fully movable but if you can’t jump across to see your neighbour, there are plenty of reed boats to travel around. Most stunning are the majestic dragonheaded vessels gliding silently on blue waters, ready to carry a handful of wide-eyed visitors.

FLOATING ISLANDS ON LAKE TITICACA By Solange Hando

t 12,507 feet, Titicaca appears like a dream, framed by pastel-coloured hills shimmering at the water’s edge under the crisp Andean sky. Stretching for over 100 miles and into Bolivia on its eastern side, fed by five rivers and numerous streams, it’s said to be the world’s highest navigable lake. The nature reserve created in 1978 protects 60 species of native birds and in the sheltered bay of Puno, the Uros Indians live peacefully on man-made islands. They were here long before the Incas built Machu Picchu but on their flimsy abodes ignored by the Conquistadores, they have outlived them for over 400 years. Soon after dawn, the first tourist boat sets off from Puno towards the nearest of 40 islands or so sprinkled around the bay. Built with local totora reeds, they glow coppery gold in the early sun and before long, the islanders begin to stir. Smoke rises from the huts, pots and pans tinkle in the semi- darkness, a man paddles in search of fresh reeds to strengthen or extend his domain and meet growing family needs. Stepping ashore on a bouncy patch of reeds may be unnerving but no one seems to mind. ‘Please come inside,’ says a man with a bright woolly hat, ‘this is my home.’ It’s just one room, no furniture, but there are rugs on the floor and a small black and white television in the corner. Outside the sun is dazzling, the air is cold but ‘Mama’ is used to it. An imposing figure in an ample skirt and traditional bowler hat, she has lit the fire on a bed of stones and proudly shows the fish caught by her man that morning. Nothing grows on the reeds but you can catch fish and ducks, for meat and eggs, chew the white root of a reed or two and head for the market in Puno to sell embroidered cloth, knitwear and trinkets and buy whatever you need.

Historians believe the Uros set up home on the lake to escape trouble on land but legend says otherwise. A cell phone may ring now and then but somewhere on the edge of the water, a child plays an Andean flute as a sudden breeze sends ripples across the reeds. The tourist boat heads back to the mainland then slowly, on the ‘Black Puma’ lake, the islands vanish, floating like a mirage between water and sky. A BETTER LIFE LAWN TO BE WILD

Cutting the grass seems such a waste of time to me. Just like fingernails, toenails and hair (if you’re lucky), it’ll only grow back again. True, it’s a valuable addition to the compost, but that’s about it.

hereas, one of the things I love most about the garden as a whole is its adaptability. Yes, it’s an ecosystem and a natural habitat, but it’s also something more: a blank canvas just waiting for my often ill-thought-out ideas. Bored with grass? (And, by grass, I mean patches of grass among the swathes of dandelions.) There’s a remedy for that - simply put down bark chips. Worried that the bees and butterflies need more encouragement to stay and thrive? Easy peasy - grow more flowers and grow a variety to suit different insects. And while you’re about it, make sure you provide a shallow source of water so they can drink. We wanted to take the whole rural thing a stage further (no, not a tractor - it wouldn’t fit through the gate), and decided to create a meadow. Or rather, with our garden: a mini meadow. First, I dug out a rough circle - and believe me, it was rough. Next, with the turf removed, we put down a layer of 50 / 50 soil and sharp sand. We brought in native wildflower seeds and some from Flanders’ poppies, which came impregnated on paper rolls. Some judicious scissor work to patchwork the sections, soak with water and then another layer of soil and sand. Naturally, the cat supervised the proceedings, technically outranking Anne as chief observer. Porsha’s presence was also a timely reminder to put netting over the circle from the beginning. After that, it’s a case of occasional watering, watching and waiting.

The seeds stir into life very quickly. Try as you might though, it’s nigh on impossible to stop the daisies from encroaching over the edges. Maybe they’re just arriving early to the party. The edges of the garden are largely wild (and some of the neighbours are probably furious), a rather fetching tangle of lords and ladies, buttercups and grasses, with seasonal appearances from bluebells, columbines, foxgloves and pulmonaria. We also have something we know as Mrs West, but have never been able to identify properly - so much for the power of the internet. The joy of having wild garden areas is the same sense of excitement as buying lucky bags as a child. Only, in this case, instead of a disappointing car with a broken wheel, the surprise might be scarlet pimpernel, wild strawberries (Anne’s not keen - she says they take over), or dog violets. And even today we argue over speedwell vs. forget-me-nots in an identity parade. We haven’t gone entirely au naturel. Having previously installed a few raised beds, Anne opted for violas (Avril Lawson), geums (Mrs Bradshaw) and bellis. None of which explains the catmint we planted near the front gate, principally to see whether Porsha would appreciate it. Strangely, while she loved it when it was a mere kittenmint in the conservatory, she treats it with indifference now it’s out in the open. Not to worry though; if last year was anything to go by, she’ll love the next butternut squash plant.

Land Rover chalk up the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne as the biggest contenders, but it’s the latter that really gives it any serious challenge. The German firm’s badge might hold a little more brand cache, but we’d pick the Sport over it every time. As a combination of jaw-dropping looks mixed with ability and agility, it’s hard to beat.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

With 420kg shaved from the weight, heavily revised steering and all-new lightweight suspension, the car feels incredibly different to drive on the road to its predecessor. In 5.0-litre form it’s ludicrously quick on all road surfaces and can claim the title of the fastest ever Land Rover to be made. Flick it into Dynamic mode and it becomes a different car – the steering quickens, it corners harder and the throttle response sharpens. It’s worlds apart from the standard mode which is far more sedate. As allrounders go, this Sport is without doubt one of the best.

VERDICT

Make no mistake - this is the new benchmark in the SUV market. I’ve been racking my brain for faults and if I’m picky the plastic feel of the paddle shifters is a little cheap and the infotainment system looks a little old in terms of graphics and speed. But that’s about it. This is a car that would please sports car drivers as much as traditional SUV drivers and the best bit? It’s considerably cheaper than the equally-brilliant Range Rover – so it’s a bargain too…

ELLA... ON STUDYING LANGUAGE

It’s been proven by many a study that learning foreign languages increases your brain function, in fact it’s been said to be the most powerful brain training exercise you can do. People with language skills are highly coveted in business and communications, and speaking another language proficiently certainly makes it easier when travelling. Most importantly, studies have found that the majority of Britons would be interested in learning a new language. Yet, despite this, very few students will be sitting in the Modern Foreign Language classrooms this September. In most European countries, learning English is mandatory throughout primary and secondary education. Quite the opposite is true here, after a 45% drop in A level students studying languages in the past decade; the numbers are on a steady decline. Perhaps this is due to the fact that language learning is tough, and can be complicated, maybe languages are not being taught in the most effective ways, or maybe too much stress is put on achieving impressive maths and science grades, so the language subjects have been pushed to the side. In a way, the British are lucky, we speak English and it is the global language of the world. Almost any foreigner can at least manage a “hello”, but perhaps this is more a hindrance than help. It allows us to become lazy, and the English are left in a perpetual state of monolinguism. The stereotype of talking to foreigners LOUDLY AND SLOWLY is in fact pretty accurate when it comes to British linguistic competence and attitudes towards learning language, and is frankly embarrassing when compared to the rest of Europe. 56% of German nationals have a good command of English, whereas the UK lags behind with only 1 in 10 of us able to speak any foreign language at all.

This year’s Annual Show will be held on Saturday 7th September in Strensall Village Hall.

On the day, all entries are to be made to the Show Secretary, Mrs Fogerty at the Village Hall between 9.30am and 11.00am accompanied by the full amount of entry fees. The Hall will be cleared by 11.30am for the Judges to make their decisions.

n Sunday 14th July, the 11th Annual Dragon Boat Challenge took place on the River Ouse between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge. absolutely superb day and a great deal of fun. All sponsorship monies are currently being collected where the final total will be announced at a reception at the Mansion House in York on 22nd October. Early ‘pledges’ given by the teams indicate that at least £60,000 should have been raised for the Rotary Club of York’s nominated charity this year of ‘Help For Heroes’. The Charity received another tremendous boost when the young soldiers from the Army Foundation College at Harrogate handed in £3400 of cash which was raised on the day. The Dragon Boat Challenge has been held annually since 2003 and during that time has raised well over £720,000 for a whole host of worthwhile charities. Mediterranean Fish Bake

Serves 4. Ready in 50 Minutes

TIP Replace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh flavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but the meaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fillet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices. INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

350g small new potatoes, halved 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 225g small plum tomatoes, halved 4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g) 50g butter, softened Pared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano • Salt and freshly ground black pepper 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once

Dot the butter over the fish fillets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender.

Slice each monkfish fillet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

he Great Gatsby actress, Carey Mulligan, is asking York residents to put on their walking shoes and support Memory Walk. Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. York Memory Walk will take place on Sunday 8th September. Carey is asking families and individuals from York to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support people

with dementia and their carers. A variety of entertainment and refreshments will be available making it a day to remember for the whole family.
