W

elcome to the April edition, another exceptionally busy month for our businesses and community groups. The huge number of people who give up their time for free to make our local area a better place never ceases to amaze me. As ever, you can learn all about them here in the Handy Mag. After a hard day in the office, an escape for me is singing in a local choir called Harmonia. Harmonia Choir has been going for 5 years and is a 50-strong all-female community choir. We have performed all over Ryedale at concerts supporting local charities with songs ranging from rock to folk, musicals and even some classical. This spring we will be competing in our first competition at the Eskdale Festival, which is a bit nerve wracking to say the least! So good luck to Alison, our director, and all Harmonia Ladies for Saturday 12th April! On the family front, another milestone is our daughter just turning 17 and wanting to drive. How costly is that! Our 14 year old Polo has been living on borrowed time for some years. My other half insisted it was a car full of character, resilience and miraculous self-healing properties, but I’d long stopped driving it for those very same reasons! The tipping point was reached when we realised how much could be saved on insurance for our daughter if we bought a group 1 insurance car. So now we have a tiny car, not very suitable for transporting two big dogs, or the food shopping, but at least it’s cheap on petrol! Don’t forget to tell businesses and local group where you found them when you call. Congratulations to Mr Sayers for winning the February edition competition. Until next time…

Spring is upon us once again and the fruit trees are bursting into flower with a promise of fruit to come. The trouble is that all too often we cannot put a name to that fruit – OK so it is an apple, but what is the variety called? There are thousands of different varieties out there but identification is still more of an art than a science. This poses a problem when you want to grow another tree the same. If the name of the original variety is uncertain then buying another one the same can be a problem, and besides wouldn’t it be better to have one grown from that original tree to keep the memory alive along with the flavour? Many people plant pips from their favourite apple and lovingly tend them for years before finally getting some fruit and discovering it is not what they hoped. You see the problem is that apples do not grow true from seed. The seed will reflect whatever pollen happened to fertilise that flower, it could be any other apple tree in the neighbourhood. Just to make things even more difficult, most apple trees will not root directly from cuttings. The only way to get an exact copy of a favourite apple tree is to graft a piece of young wood from it onto a healthy apple rootstock to create a daughter tree.

Kitchens & Bedrooms to suit any taste. A wide range of kitchens & replacement doors. Traditional classics to chic modern lines. Superb quality at prices lower than big brands.

At KMEG we are using this technique to preserve our local heritage of apple trees, be they historic named varieties or just those with a special meaning or significance for someone. Over the past month we have grafted young wood from 20 precious trees onto new rootstock and these will be grown on for a short time to make sure all is well before being planted out in local gardens. The cost is around £3 per tree, including an environmentally friendly tree guard to keep the rabbits away, and the new trees should produce fruit in about 3 years time. By continuing to graft trees each year we can make sure that some of our local fruit history is not lost. Are you looking to find some extra space in your home without spending a fortune this Spring?

I

f you have a conservatory, you will know that you can’t use it comfortably for many months of the year - it’s the room at the end of the house that no-one really wants to go in. It’s usually stifling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. You might have tried thermal blinds, and there are roof replacement companies who will fit a completely new roof on your conservatory, but this can cost thousands of pounds and often requires planning permission. For an elegant, cost-effective solution that really works, you need to have a chat with local Yorkshire company, Inceil. Their expert team will fit an insulated ceiling to your conservatory in 1 or 2 days which will completely transform it. An insulated ceiling from Inceil will save up to 80% of the heat that is lost through the roof in the winter, and maintain a better temperature throughout the year. You don’t lose head-height as they follow the existing roof-line and it’s so much

nicer to look up to a smooth plastered ceiling rather than a plastic roof covered in algae and bird droppings! If you want to find out more, you can watch a video on www.inceil.co.uk or call York 01904 891936 to arrange a free survey and quote. Now what will you do with that extra usable space!

Would you like to be part of an exciting opportunity to join with a group of others to form the new Friends of Sight Support?

S

ight Support Ryedale, the local charity supporting people who are blind or partially sighted, is developing a new ‘Friends’ group to help increase their fundraising activities, and would be delighted to hear from anyone who might like to get involved in community fundraising. Janice Every, the Chief Officer of the charity, said, “You can give as much, or as little, time as suits you – or just get involved in the events which particularly appeal to you. The overall aim is to raise funds for the charity, yes, but also for it to be fun.” The launch meeting will be held on Tuesday, 1st April, 7.30pm at The Yard, 11 Market Place, Malton. After the launch, it’s envisaged that the group would meet from time-to-time to discuss ideas for raising funds, and to organise the chosen events. Janice added, “This new venture is really good news for the charity. It’ll help us to become more self-sufficient in our fundraising so

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Top Tips from a dental professional

Are you pouring money down the drAin?

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

And don’t talk to me about Inheritance Tax (payable at 40% on anything valued above £325,000 on death). People are still concerned about getting an extra 0.5% of their ISA savings when 40% of it is going to disappear down the tax drain when they die. It’s just bonkers.

M

ost people’s money has to work hard today. It’s got to pay for somewhere to live, transport, living expenses, insurances, school fees, pensions, holidays (if you’re lucky) and a whole host of other things. So it doesn’t make sense to me that time and again we see clients pouring money down the drain. Let’s take school fees. Tax relief isn’t available on school fees directly. But there are ways to structure your investments and deposits so they don’t produce taxable income. And that reduces your tax bill. Higher rate taxpayers can benefit from special investments that qualify for extraordinarily generous tax reliefs. And all this leads to more money in your pocket. To pay for all the stuff you need to pay for. What about retirement income? We have increased our clients‘ retirement income by as much as 30% a year. That’s money going into your pocket rather than down the tax drain.

Almost everyone we see has savings and investments which aren’t producing the best, or most tax efficient, returns they could be, and often it’s very simple to re-direct savings to do the job properly. It’s our job to increase clients’ wealth through increased returns and benefits and reduced tax and waste. The professional advice portal – Unbiased – reports that as much as £4.7 billion is wasted every year because of tax inefficiencies. The report also found that one in three Brits are confident in tackling their tax waste without the help of advisers. But 77% of them admit they don’t do anything about it. Well it’s not going to sort itself out is it? If you don’t want any more of your hard earned wealth to end up down the drain, you need to take some action now.

I’ve produced a “Wealth Kit” showing you how you can increase your wealth and protect it from greedy bankers, crazy Governments, desperate authorities and other legalised robbers which includes my audio CD “How to find thousands of lost pounds with little known secrets of the mega-wealthy”. Handy Mag readers can get their hands on a copy, worth £29.95, absolutely free. path to a measured and successful mental health lifestyle. “With an ever-changing world, and with increasing pressures, it is understandable how depression can ‘creep up’ on people. “It takes courage to ask for help, but with my experience and training, I can provide an alternative to the often lengthy process which a visit to a GP can involve.”

inding an understanding person to talk to could be the key to combating stress, anxiety and depression in today’s uncertain world.

Martin’s training and expertise provides him with an effective ‘tool kit’ which can be used by those who visit him.

Martin Gough at Ryedale Mental Health Solutions has over 12 years experience in the health sector and is a Registered Mental Health Nurse.

“One of the key aspects to helping someone is helping them to gain perspective,” said Martin.” One of the most effective ways of doing this is to teach someone how to keep a thought diary, and encouraging someone to make small, positive adjustments in their day-to-day lifestyle.”

Martin explained: “I offer empathetic yet professional support for those of us who are experiencing difficulties in dealing with anxiety, depression and stress.”

Martin offers one-to-one support, which can include a personal home visit. “I hope to offer help to people when they feel vulnerable and they need someone to talk to,” said Martin.

Martin has first-hand experience of stress and its impact, and uses simple, effective techniques that can set people on the road to recovery. “From keeping a simple diary, to reconditioning negative thought processes, I try to find the root of the problem, and help that person find their

“NEW! – A Discreet Hearing Aid That Actually Thinks For Itself”

F

or the first time it is possible to produce new microphone patterns by allowing an interactive exchange of data between the left and right hearing instruments... so what does this mean for the user? By transmitting the full audio signal between hearing instruments using real-audio wireless exchange, the microphones of both hearing instruments work together to focus on sound sources coming directly from the front while minimizing competing noise from all directions. The result is a significantly improved signal which offers far better speech comprehension in difficult

listening situations than has been possible before. Now it is possible to narrow the beam focus to just one individual, with the result that the listener is now able to fully participate in conversation. By wirelessly linking the hearing instruments and exchanging audio signals in real time, it is now possible to narrow the focus to one particular individual, reducing interfering noise coming not only from the back and sides but now, for the first time, from near the front as well. In summary they offer a noticeable improvement in unusually challenging situations such as restaurants, meeting and group conversations which, until now, were not completely

manageable for wearers of hearing instruments. Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing aids have been the standout growth driver of the hearing aid industry over the last years - the most important advantages of RIC models are a discreet design, small and lightweight housing with a thin wire leading into the ear canal coupled with a high instant fit rate. It’s strictly ‘Ladies First’ at York Golf Club in Strensall this Spring, where big plans are afoot to attract more women & girls into taking up golf. “With a series of free Get Into Golf sessions and a new low cost Academy membership category, our doors are open to anyone who wants to take up the sport” says Mark Rogers, Head Professional at the club. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played golf before or haven’t picked up a club since your school days or an almost-forgotten holiday, the intention will be to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. And there’s evidence that golf is good for you too! As well as burning calories and, in some cases, lowering cholesterol, it is proven that golfers live five years longer than the rest of the population’’. Whilst, at present, the club has a near-full men’s section, with a waiting-list likely to be introduced very soon, there has been a decline in the number of lady members. “With the additional offer of a 50% reduction in first year fees for new lady members, we will ensure that everyone joining us here at Strensall, whether they are still learning the game or are established members of other clubs in the area, will be given a really special welcome” says Marion Bray, 2014’s Lady Captain. Those interested in joining in the fun at York Golf Club should contact either the pros’ shop (Y490304), the secretary’s office (Y491840) or visit www.yorkgolfclub.co.uk for more information.

Physiotherapy can help with...

Giving Your Child Good Teeth For Life. Part 1

These top tips are proven to reduce their risk 1. As a baby do not encourage a ‘sweet tooth’ in your child, once weaned your child should be pretty much eating the same as you, their physiology is no different. Manufacturers have created a whole market of ‘children’s foods’ which seem to mean laden with sugar. 2. Avoid drinks or snacks between meals unless they are plain milk or water, plus unsweetened tea or coffee once they are a little older. Juice drinks in sucking bottles bathe the teeth in sugary or acidic liquid and can destroy their teeth as they come through. 3. Many a well meaning parent has given their child raisins or fruit between meals however the natural sugars in them can also cause tooth decay so try to encourage a meal habit. 4. Supervise brushing of their teeth and always use the correct toothpaste for their age, once they reach 6 they should use adult toothpaste as they are developing their adult teeth. Children often prefer a mild mint. Products containing Xylitol are especially useful at reducing tooth decay. Encourage them to only spit out after brushing. 5. Use disclosing tablets to monitor how well they brush preferably on a weekly basis. 6. Visit the dentist from an early age at least annually. Links www.bda.org/makeamealofit for further information.

IT TAKES TWO Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church So who comes to mind when you think of the song, ‘It Takes Two’; Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner or Katie Perry? Oops, if you haven’t heard of Katie Perry, sadly that may be a sign of your age (sorry!). However, the sentiment is true, since Adam and Eve, two has been better than one. Laurel and Hardy, Romeo and Juliet, Starsky and Hutch, Batman and Robin, Tom and Jerry and Ant and Dec are just a few of the famous partnerships we all have come to love; well apart from Ant and Dec who can be a bit annoying, or is that just me? We are designed to work together; to partner others to achieve more than we can alone. There was a moment when a man called Peter was told to go fishing. The catch was so large that the nets were about to break. It was at this pivotal moment that Peter had to make a choice; to struggle alone or to ask for help? Peter humbled himself and ‘signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them’. You can read about it in chapter five in the Gospel of Luke. There are times when we all need a partner when things are too big for us to deal with alone, yet we have the same dilemma; shall we swallow our pride and ask for help or soldier on alone? It takes courage to ask for help, to admit we can’t go on alone. But don’t worry, Laurel needs Hardy and Ant needs Dec and we need each other. Statistics tell us that loneliness is on the rise and community is on the decline. In fact, according to a local BBC Radio Report, York is in eleventh place on the list of communities where there is the least sense of belonging. To be wanted and to belong are intrinsic to our design and when we don’t we can feel isolated and insignificant. Are we too busy? Eyes down, looking at our own ‘stuff’ that we don’t see the signals for help from those around us? Could loneliness be reversed and community built? To make a difference, am I willing to ask for help and be ready to lend a hand? We know Batman could not survive without Robin, but have our neighbours learnt to survive without us?

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett

Sophie’s Bakery for the Broken Hearted

The Magic Paintbrush

Lolly Winston 36-year-old Sophie has just lost her husband, Ethan, to cancer. She had only been married a few years and is devastated. Lolly Winston takes us on a journey through the emotional rollercoaster of bereavement and its different stages, from denial to acceptance.

Julia Donaldson and Joel Stewart Julia Donaldson is peerless as a writer for 3-6 yearolds yet her story themes appeal to adults too, which means they don’t mind reading them again and again. She’s as much a master of ‘distilling language’ as any poet, making every word count. In addition she uses the natural rhythm of the spoken voice – which is what makes her stories ideal for reading aloud.

At first Sophie is a wreck. When she shows up for work, distraught in her bathrobe and bunny slippers, she finds she’s not only lost her husband but her job. Distraught, Sophie leaves California for Ashland, Oregon and through the fog of her grief starts to rebuild her life. She discovers a previously hidden talent and opens the bakery of the title. Along the way she has to deal with her motherin-law and also collects a rag-taggle bunch of new friends who variously try to seduce her, support her and burn her house down. As she juggles her business with her new life, Sophie proves that with enough humour and bravado it is possible to rebuild a life after a devastating loss. And who’s to say she can’t find love again in the process... Lolly Winston knows how to tug the heart strings. Sophie’s grief is present throughout the book, and heartbreakingly raw, yet the book is funny, touching and uplifting by turn. Even at her lowest, Sophie maintains a wry sense of humour: on an application which asks who to contact in case of emergency, she finds that she has no name to enter so writes “George Clooney”. Keep the Kleenex handy - this novel will have even the hardesthearted reader in tears.

The Magic Paint Brush is an immensely charming tale and the illustrations are quite beautiful and appropriately Chinese in style. Shen is a little girl who is given the gift of a magic brush which makes everything she paints come to life. But with this power comes great responsibility. How will this smart little girl deal with a greedy emperor who wants her to help make him even richer? The results are delightful, beautiful and poetic.

cONsERvATION & RENOvATION

spEcIALIsT cARE FOR yOUR pERIOD pROpERTy

Owning a period property means there are many aspects of building maintenance that need to be considered. Eastgate Building Contractors have been heavily involved with the renovation of old properties and thanks to their professional team and expert knowledge. A recent period house in Whitby and a farmhouse in Pickering, both have recently been through sensitive restoration and this has led to the creation of a beautiful home, breathing life back into homes that had suffered from sand and cement rendering, pointing and use of waterproof treatments in the wrong places. Eastgate Building Services Company Director Maria Bennett is keen to pass on some tips for heritage property owners. Maria said: “From stonework to lime finishing, we can offer clients a full portfolio of bespoke and specialist techniques. “And while having an older property can be very rewarding, it can also be hard work keeping it in order, so here are some helpful hints. It is best to speak to professional building contractors, such as ourselves, as we can help you make the most of your building.” Maria continued:” Most houses pre 1920 were built to breathe allowing water to evaporate and prevent the build up of damp. Once this concept of breathability is understood the process of building work can be planned and implemented using products that function well for both insulation and breathability of the building” 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

TIps FOR A sMOOTH HERITAGE pROjEcT • Choose a reputable company with plenty of experience in structural and waterproofing works • Take on good advisors, such as conservation and listed building officers • Consider if traditional techniques, such as lime work, are appropriate • Ensure you have the correct, relevant damp proof work carried out • Work out a realistic budget and work closely with your builder • Consider ground levels and drainage improvements externally to reduce water ingress • Plan ahead – ie, consider the costs of finishes and fittings • Consider as soon as possible where your electrics are going to be placed

• Ask your builder/contractor for clarification throughout your project

COOKING

SLOW COOKED CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA EQUIPMENT: • Processor

METHOD:

One of the many great advantages of the slow cooker is that there’s no need to marinate dishes that normally require it. This gentle lengthy cook enables flavours to develop and mingle together naturally during the lengthy cook. This is wonderful to come back to after a hard day at work or play.

INGREDIENTS: • 4 chicken breasts, cubed • 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 2 teaspoons garam masala • 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil • 1 can plum peeled tomatoes • 2 tablespoons tomato puree • 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream • Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped ( garnish) 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

• In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil. • Process until you achieve a paste. • Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture. • Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes. • Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top. • Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent • When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander.

Making Sense of Information Technology

As a business owner you’re never going reduce the stress or the number of hours you work unless you hand over some of the day to day running of the business to your team. If the business has grown up around you, it’s highly likely that you know how every process works in the business because you’re the one that’s developed them. The question is, have you created documented procedures that enable you to delegate effectively? If you haven’t then as you bring on new team members the pressure will increase and you’ll wonder why you bothered. This is a classic problem for lots of business owners so you need to get the detail out of your head and onto paper. Then you’ve got to train the team to carry out the procedures. It’s important that you communicate effectively with this but also remember communication is a two way street. It’s possible that once your team have got confidence in what they’re doing they can make suggestions as to how operations can be streamlined, so have patience and be willing to listen to what they have to say.

MISH MISH & THE CAT BOX Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets

T

oday I have been carted off to the vets. I was tricked of course! Had I known the box had entered the house, I would have made a hasty exit out of the cat flap. The reason for my trip to Station House Vets is related to the fact that they have started selling Hills food. The Vet Essentials range has lots of benefits, including keeping the teeth and the urinary tract healthy and, as it is good for weight control, I have been put on it. My owner said it only costs around 50p a day to feed me. However I think the deciding factor may have been as it comes on a great scheme with money off the first purchase and then the 6th bag is free. She likes a bargain! Animals have sensitive stomachs so when

changing diets the new food needs to be introduced slowly by mixing it with the old food. Of course my owner knew that, but she decided to go away and leave her husband in charge. As he is a man, he didn’t listen to the instructions and even swore the conversation on how to switch food had never taken place in the first place. The result? I was changed directly onto my new food and now have the squits! I should have known something was wrong this morning when I was shut out of the utility room while the other cats were fed. I was traumatised! When I heard the biscuit noise so soon after breakfast I ran into the kitchen and started rubbing against my owners legs purring loudly. The minute her facial expression changed to one of triumph and the door closed behind me, I knew something was very wrong. When she picked me up I went a bit stiff and continued to purr hopefully. She walked through to the dining room with me thrown over her shoulder and then I saw it! The cat box! I tried to run down her back but she had a tight hold, she started to feed me into the box back feet first. I clung to the edges with my front paws and put out my claws. I was not going in without a fight but she is a vet nurse and before I knew it I was inside

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

I

t is the start of our fundraising season and new volunteers are always welcome. Whether it is helping at a stall, donating baking or sewing/ Lycon crafts for sale at our dog shows or fostering our dogs, all help is really appreciated and we look forward to hearing from you. We have had a busy start to the year and nothing is more heartbreaking than taking a dog away from a loving family to put in kennels while we find a new home. Sometimes we are fortunate and are able to rehome a dog before it needs to come into the kennels thanks to the foresight of the owner in contacting us in good time. So far this year we have been able to rehome six dogs straight from their homes and urge anyone who has to give their dog up to start contacting your local rescues in good time, so many people ring

46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

us expecting us to collect their dog the same day which we simply cannot do. If you are looking for a dog please consider our Lycon, he is a lovely Lurcher who thinks he is a Lab with the friendliest nature, the waggiest tail and a great personality. He has been with us since July and because he is such a big dog he is constantly overlooked for the smaller, cuter dogs. As he is a Lurcher he does need to be walked on the lead and cannot be rehomed where there are cats and fluffy pets. Whatever type of dog you are looking for please consider a rescue dog. Most local charities have pictures of their dogs on their websites and will be happy to hear from you.

RYEDALE • APRIL 2014 • ISSUE 98 the box, captured. I turned my back on the door and let my disgust be known with a flick of my tail! All this could have been avoided had she invested in a sensible top opening basket that would ensure me happily getting in and out with ease. On arriving at work she placed me in a kennel and I smiled smugly at the expression on her face when she discovered the little present I had left her in the box. A little triumph for me! I am staying at the vets as she is starving me and doesn’t trust me not to eat other cats dinners or go out and find a neighbour to feed me. Now, not only am I being STARVED, I have also had to endure a car journey and being stuck in a kennel all day. Looking slightly stressed with all of today’s happenings, my owner said not to worry as she has something called Feliway she can plug in to the wall to reduce my stress levels and Hills also do a diet that can help with my stress levels in the long term! Given that a rapid change of diet is why I’m here in the first place, I think she can put that idea on hold for now. I’ll just be happy to get my normal food any time soon!

CARING FOR FEATHERED FRIENDS

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

B

irds are commonly kept in the UK as pets, companions and for falconry. Keeping a bird can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience but as with any animal, it is essential that you do your research before getting one, in order to make sure that species is right for you. Some birds are highly intelligent or demanding and not suited to every circumstance. Many illnesses of birds are avoidable and directly caused by poor diet or environment and thus it is essential to buy from a reputable source, have the bird checked by an avian vet and ensure you do not rely on information from any one place, particularly on the internet. At Battle Flatts our vets and nurses have spent years gaining further qualifications in avian (bird) medicine and regularly attend meetings and conferences in order to stay up to date. We are experienced with dealing with a wide range of species, ranging from smaller birds such as finches and conures, parrots such as Amazons and African Greys, poultry, a wide range of raptors, owls, large macaws, eagles and even emus! Specialist expertise, facilities and equipment allow us to perform delicate surgery on birds as small as sparrows and perform minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopy in order to diagnose and treat disease with the least risk to the patient.

• Suspected egg binding or cloacal prolapse. • Changes in the appearance of droppings (especially green urates) • Failure to empty the crop • Anorexia and/or weight loss If your bird is showing any of these signs, a veterinary appointment is advised as soon as possible. We would also advice insuring your birds and getting them checked annually in order to catch any problems before they develop.

Birds are masters of hiding illness and will often do so until disease is advanced or it becomes an emergency. If your bird appears off-colour or unwell then it probably is! All bird owners should be aware of the basic signs of ill health: • Lethargy, sleeping a lot, eyes half closed, depressed or fluffed up • Unsteady on feet, collapse or falling off the perch • Any breathing difficulties: wheezing, movement of the tip of the wings/tail up and down, gasping • Twitching or seizures. • Loss of voice, reduced talking 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

No dog lover ever likes to think of anything bad happening to a dog but particularly right here on our doorstep in Ryedale. But unfortunately like in every other part of the country dogs have become something of an easily disposed of possession.

DOG OF THE MONTH - TEDDY Our feature dog this month is Teddy, dumped on the busy A64 he was left frightened and alone but luckily a kind passer by spotted him and took him to a local vets. Being left unclaimed in the council pound for the statutory seven days Ryedale Dog Rescue heard of his plight just in time and took him into their care. If you think you could offer Teddy a forever home please visit our website at: www. ryedaledogrescue.com or call 07581 324153 for more information. Or if you’d like to help us raise much needed funds why not join us at one of our events (See more details in the Whats On section). MOTORING CHEVROLET Trax

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

@carwriteups

The Trax went on sale in August 2013 and can be yours for as little as £15,495.

FAST FACTS

• Max speed: 121mph • 0-62 mph: 9.8secs • Combined mpg: 44.1 • Engine: 1364 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo petrol • Max. power (bhp): 138 at 6000 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 147 at 1850 rpm • CO2: 94 g/km • Price: £19,795 on the road

It’s the newest addition to the Chevrolet family and is available with a diesel or petrol engine. You can also choose to have two-wheel or all-wheel-drive (AWD). I decided to get behind the wheel of the 1.4T AWD LT. At £19,795 it is straying away from the ‘affordable’ price-tag, but with 138 horses and a turbocharger under the bonnet, it’s one of best in the Trax line-up. So what is it? It’s cast in the style of a small Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) but without the archetypal running costs. It all sounds a bit ‘Mickey Mouse’, but you’re in good hands if you buy a Trax. Chevrolet lays claim to inventing the first SUV with the introduction of the Carryall Suburban in 1935. Today, nearly 80 years later, the Trax has got SUV in its DNA, but with a big twist of funkiness to boot. Conveying brawniness, and agility, the Trax looks good. A grille featuring the iconic Chevrolet bowtie logo, prominent wheel arches, powerfully built rear haunches, and a fast, rearward-swept roofline are key elements that define the car’s exterior. The cabin is also well turned-out. It’s practical, well-organised and characterised by sinuous lines. The rear seat row even boasts an electrical socket that can be used for recharging laptops and other electronic devices without the need for an adapter. Storage facilities are abundant too. The Trax’s boot space isn’t massive because, let’s face it, this car is a compact vehicle. That said, it does a lot with what it’s got. Without a spare tyre, there’s more room available under the cargo floor. Driving the Trax is a pleasure. It’s been tuned to deliver European driving dynamics and the car flies its own kite when it comes to sophisticated electronic aid systems. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The AWD PROS ‘N’ CONS system adapts • Funky √ to the road • Practical √ conditions • Safe √ and notably • No spare wheel X improves traction on slippery or gravelled roads. That’s a big bonus if you live in the countryside or you want a car that won’t give up the moment winter kicks in. The strength of its structural design makes the Trax very safe. Should the worst happen and the car rolls over, it’s been engineered to carry more than four times its own weight. What’s more, the Chevy is equipped with Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Customary kit also includes Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Anti-Lock Brakes. Six airbags and ISOFX anchoring systems for children’s safety seats are equally part of the standard safety features onboard the Chevrolet Trax.

ON YOUR PLOT April showers to October fun

It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

JOBS FOR APRIL:-

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants. • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out. • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover. • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel. • Plant an asparagus bed. • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear.

N

ow is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves. Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and

54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow. ANGELA PARKIN PLANTS For a bold statement plant why not try Stipa gigantea an evergreen grass with dramatic 6-8ft tall oat-like flowers in summer. But for scent nothing beats ‘pinks’ or dianthus. Being sun lovers these guys are excellent for tubs or rockeries and appreciate well drained soils. In my opinion the best new variety out is one called ‘Memories’, pure white blooms, heavenly scented and repeat flowering.

Y

ou have to be passionate about plants to try growing them on the North Yorkshire Moors. Here at Bransdale I manage to grow hardy herbaceous perennials (plants that are tough, flower in a profusion of varieties, die down in the winter and miraculously appear the following spring – twice the clump!).

But I don’t forget the wildflowers. Oxeye daisy, ragged robin and red campion are all good bee and butterfly plants and will establish themselves in difficult locations (as seen in our barn yard, even though pruned back by rabbits). The moor is a harsh but beautiful place. We grow with

The nursery area is compact: a tiny greenhouse surrounded by windbreaks, covered frames for protecting young plants from the elements and standing out beds for more established plants. Our growing season is quite short. Varieties are selected for their robustness, which doesn’t mean to say that they aren’t showy and colourful. Marsh marigolds will be the first to burst into bright yellow flowers and they don’t mind boggy soils – apt for the season we’ve been having so far. The hardy geranium family are brilliant for ground covering in shade or sun and come in whites, blues, pinks and dark purples. They are so easy to grow. Daisies are one of my old fashioned favourites, good garden plants and great for cutting. We grow varieties such as ‘T E Killin’ with anemone shaped blooms; ‘Aglaia’ with her shaggy mop headed flowers; ‘Victorian Secret’, a dwarf variety with perfect yellow centred daisy blooms. These pure white flowers illuminate the garden during the day and especially at twilight.

the seasons. Once I hear the cuckoo and see the swallows and swifts come back to nest I know that spring has arrived. Then in August the moor explodes in a riot of purple heather blooms. Being off the beaten track we are not usually open to the public but take our plants to plant fairs such as Scampston Hall, Burton Agnes, Newby Hall and Flower Power Plant Shows. Great places to shop for local grown and unusual plants, and to get expert advice. www.acpfoxglove.wordpress.com E-mail: acp.foxglove@btinternet.com Tel: 01751 432948

ELLA... ON TXTNG

We hear time and again about how text messaging is destroying language, and that it marks the fall of any kind of serious literacy or formal writing ability amongst young people. And it’s not a difficult thing to believe, what with so many abbreviations like “lol” and “brb”, and the frequent misspellings or total omissions of letters which can condense a perfectly sensible sentence, “See you later”, into a fragment of its original self: “c u l8r”. No capital letters, no full stops – how will anyone possibly be able to communicate in a civilised manner without being able to use grammar properly? Thing is, these styles of writing have been around long before texting was even invented. The term “IOU” was coined in the 17th century, and really how different is ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing” to SWALK (sealed with a loving kiss) from previous generations? Both simply lessen the time and space that the message takes up, and when these things are limited, that’s really very logical. More importantly however, text language is not really writing at all. Spoken and written language obey very different rules, with only very particular overlaps. When performing a formal speech, we speak like we write. When texting, we write like we speak. It is only due to recent technological advances that this is even possible, but now that replies are instant and the speed of typing is able to keep up with the speed at which we talk, text language has become representative of conversation. So naturally, it would make sense to obey the more flexible rules of spoken language. This is something that everyone who texts understands. There has always been formal and informal language, and people have the mental capacity to handle both simultaneously. Just because you can understand “nxt wknd” to mean “next weekend”, doesn’t automatically make someone incapable of comprehending elegant prose, or even creating it. Thanks to qwerty keyboards and autocorrect, many don’t even bother with abbreviations. But nevertheless, they do not spell out the doom of sophisticated discourse, they’re simply a practical adaptation of the language, and it’s really not a big deal. Ella

As an experienced appliance engineer, Jonathan can fix your washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer or oven, saving you the expense of buying a new one and the bother of recycling old machines. 24 HOURS OF MUSIC TO RAISE FUNDS FOR HOSPICE

2ND & 3RD MAY AT ST MICHAELS CHURCH, MALTON the right notes. “The ‘Good Night’s Sleep’ appeal is such an important one for Martin House Children’s Hospice. We are delighted to be able to offer our support, and we are looking forward to the event.

S

leep will be the last thing on the minds of local musicians next month during a 24-hour charity music session. Malton White Star Band will stage a 24-hour ‘Play-A-Thon’ on 2nd to 3rd May in St Michael’s Church in the town’s Market Place, to help raise funds for the Martin House Children’s Hospice ‘Good Night’s Sleep’ appeal. The appeal, which is also supported by BBC Radio York, will raise funds to provide countywide support for children with a life-limiting illness, along with support for their families. The ‘Good Night’s Sleep Appeal’ has a £120,000 target, and Malton White Star Band will play their part – and their instruments – to help the hospice reach its goal. Over 25 band members, aged from just 10 to 80, will play from 7pm on Friday 2nd May right through to 7pm on Saturday 3rd May – in other words, a playing marathon, or ‘Play-A-Thon’! Cliff Hicks, Musical Director of the band, explains: “All our dedicated band members will play in shifts, and we will be joined by other local musicians to help us reach

“We hope to have every one of our 25 members play for the first hour and the last hour of the 24hour session. We will be looking forward to coffee and cake at St Michael’s Church, during its coffee morning on Saturday 3rd May! “Malton White Star Band was formed well over a century ago, and has been entertaining music -lovers ever since. We hope to raise funds for the appeal so we can do our bit to help families in North Yorkshire.” The ‘Good Night’s Sleep’ appeal offers a lifeline to parents for whom broken nights become routine when caring for their child. At Martin House, overnight support is available, and with this, a chance for mum, dad and carers to relax and have restorative sleep, knowing their child is being looked after by the Hospice care team.

campaign will make such a big difference to families. Everyone’s commitment to give the parents and children a supported experience is truly remarkable.” If you would like to donate to the appeal, you can do so through the Just Giving link on the Martin House Children’s Hospice website www.justgiving.com/ martinhousehospice or by logging onto www.martinhousehospice.co.uk Martin House Children’s Hospice, which opened 25 years ago, along with its fundraisers, have raised just over £69,000 to date. A spokesperson at the Hospice said: “Our role is to ensure that in everything we do, we place the family at the centre and value each member of the family as individuals with their own needs.”

The £120,000 is required to fund planned respite stays at the Hospice, at Boston Spa near Wetherby, and fundraisers have a year in which to raise the money. Sarah Drummond, Managing Editor of BBC Radio York, said: “We are excited to work with Martin House and all the fundraisers in our area. The www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 67
