W

elcome to the December edition and the last of 2013. The festive season is upon us once more and our local shops, business, churches and the community at large are busy getting ready to help you enjoy yourselves and get you safely through to the New Year. We are so lucky in Ryedale to have 5 vibrant towns. We have been overwhelmed in our efforts to publicise every sort of event in the area from Santas running in Malton to Santa Sleigh Rides, fairs, markets, concerts, pantos and star gazing. All this alongside the myriad of local independent businesses that can cater for our every need at this time of year. As we do not produce a January edition we will be taking a break from monthly deadlines in December. This will be a welcome relief for me and my trusty team, Nicky and Phil, in rounding off our best year to date. Never have the Handy Mags been so full of businesses, community events and articles, and this gives us a good feeling that we are doing an ok job! But we can always improve and if you think we are missing something or have any comments about the Handy Mag, please email or phone and let us know. Being a small independent and local business we understand the issues faced by other small businesses, and we like to think we work better together. In signing off for 2013 all that remains are some thank yous. To our local posties for every magazine posted in every letterbox in every corner of the area; a truly remarkable service. To the businesses that we have worked with and to the community groups that crowd the Handy Mag with local events and news. And finally to our readers who diligently ‘Spot the Frogs’ and contact us at the Handy Mag with messages of support. To all our readers, advertisers and community groups be festive, have fun, keep safe and have a very happy Christmas and a fantastic New Year!

A VISION FOR NORTON ON DERWENT Norton on Derwent has excellent communications links to York, Scarborough and beyond via the A64; and public transportation links to Leeds, Liverpool and London from the bus and train stations. Norton is host to some of the area’s largest employers and manufacturers: Neaco, Bright Steels, Karro (known locally as the bacon factory) and the recently expanded Yorkshire Baker. It also has its hidden gems like CrootsEngland, who sell their quality leather products in Harrods, and awardwinning butchers W.Fletcher and Sons who have been established for over 100 years and we also have award winning hair-salons in the town. Austin’s Motorcycles in Commercial Street have been in business for nearly 50 years and if you are happier on four wheels, the town boasts four car sales businesses (K M Barkers, Robson’s, Cooke’s and Chapman’s), half a dozen garage services and one of the best body shops in the area…. Watson’s. There is plenty of choice in Norton when it comes to food and drink including four pubs, two restaurants, two chip shops and four takeaways. Or if you fancy cooking at home watching a block-buster from Norton Video Centre, the four grocery stores (Asda,

Lidl, Costcutter and One-Stop), two butchers, two greengrocers and an off-licence can provide everything you need. The people of Norton are well-served with leisure activities, too, with the skate-park (a joint venture with Malton Town Council), the bowling club, the

ello! I am a Counsellor, a clinical hypnotherapist, an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Reiki practitioner. I see these qualifications as tools to help you find your own solution to your difficulties or problems to achieve your own sense of fulfilment.

I qualified as a Counsellor in 2005 with a Diploma in Counselling and added a BSc degree to this in 2006. My primary model is person-centred and that means it is all about you, the person, the client. The only agenda that matters is the one you have, whether you want to learn how to manage your stress or talk through your feelings following the loss of a loved one when you feel you can’t talk openly and honestly to anyone else. Counselling is sometimes referred to as a talking therapy and can help with many issues, far too numerous to mention here.

Hypnotherapy is another wonderful tool to help you get where you want to be. There is a lot of superstition around hypnosis but essentially the trance like state is actually a wonderful feeling of deep relaxation, you are not asleep, in fact, you are very aware focusing on my voice. Have you ever set off driving your car and realised you don’t recall passing certain places along the way? The chances are, you were in a hypnotic trance, but don’t worry, had your attention been required, your conscious mind would have acted instantly. Hypnotherapy can help with a number of issues such as stopping smoking, phobias, panic attacks and stress management. For a free 30 minute, no obligation discussion about your issues, please contact me directly on my mobile 07729 336811. If I am unable to

Good hearing delivers easy listening to the news on the radio orr relaxing with our favourite soap. Good hearing plays a crucial role in keeping us aware, not feeling isolated and enjoying chatting on the telephone. Good hearing has but one benefit above all others: enhanced quality of life!

Hearing isn’t just about the ability to hear sound; it’s all about keeping in touch. So, if you feel your ears need a little boost give me a call TODAY for a FREE home hearing test... ...and I’ll see what I can do to help.

RYEDALE LIONS CLUB Santa’s “little helpers” from the Lions Club will be with the sleigh and collecting door-to-door to raise funds for Ryedale Special Families and Ryedale Carers, as well as other Lions charities, in its biggest fund-raising event of the year. “This is a special time of year for all children and their families and we hope as many as possible take the opportunity to meet Santa and help some very worthwhile local causes,” said Ryedale Lions President, Vic Hall. Last year the event raised a record £7,000 and the Lions hope to do even better this year. TURN AGAIN WHITTINGTON

M

alton and Norton Musical Theatre are celebrating 65 years and are performing the same pantomime as their first in 1949. Rehearsals are well under way for Dick Whittington and tickets are already on sale for the show which will run at The Milton Rooms in Malton from Friday 17th to Saturday 25th January. The theatre group was formed in 1948 and performed its first show with a 100-strong crew on and off stage and an orchestra of seven. Over the years there have been close to 200 pantomimes, musicals, revues and annual ‘Songs from the Shows’ productions as well as concerts for good causes. It has made a huge contribution to the life of the towns and few families have not had at least one member in the society or been involved with it in some way over the years! This year’s pantomime follows the traditional tale of Dick (played by regular favourite Ria Williams) a poor boy who becomes a wealthy merchant and eventually the Lord Mayor of London, due principally to the ratting abilities of his cat (Mia West) and despite attempts to persuade him otherwise by Queen Rat (Margaret Lukey) and her two co-horts Rot and Stench (Georgia Chapman & Dom Weatherill).

Stenchess ( Elaine Chapman) and the Ship’s Captain (Neil Paylor). Principal roles will be supported by a further full company of 60 with Kirkham Henry’s junior as well as senior dancers adding their usual glitz and glamour to the production. The show will once again be directed by John Hall, with musical direction from Gill Boler.

Watch out for “Panto Dame” mother and son performances by Mark Boler & Ben Greenhough, as well as “Alderman Fitzwilliam” father and daughter roles for Ian Goring & Ellen Longworth. The traditional Panto Fairy will be played by Paula Cook, with additional cameo roles for cockney husband and wife, Harry and Dora (Rob Davies and Toni Wray), Queen Megabazooma (Clare Fowler), High Priestess (Saskia Kirkham Burke),

Create the Roadmap for Your Business in 2014 As we head into the end of the year it’s a great time to reflect on what you’ve achieved in 2013. What have been your biggest achievements? What could you have done better? How much profit have you made? Using these ‘learnings’ will help you to start thinking about the areas you need to improve in 2014. The New Year is a great time to be setting goals. In business you should definitely identify financial goals including a turnover and most importantly a profit goal. Being in business is about making a profit so ensure you know what you want to achieve. Successful businesses focus on quality of service delivery, so it’s a good time to ensure your customers come to you for great service rather than the cheapest price. Based on your financial goals you should then be able to set some Key Performance Indicators that will help you to track your performance and ensure you are able to make adjustments to your plan along the way. Goal setting isn’t always the easiest thing to do, so why not come along to our ‘Goal Setting Workshop’ on Tuesday 7th January, which can give you that much needed push to set goals for 2014! We also offer attendees who are serious about growing their business a Complimentary Business Review. For more information give me a call on the number below.

Perry’s Malton District Male Voice Choir lines up for festive fun

Local Departures from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering, Thornton le Dale, Malton, Norton

CHOIR’S CHRISTMAS DO IS FOR ALL THE FAMILY

M

usic for all the family is planned at a bumper afternoon Christmas concert in Malton on Sunday December 8th by Malton District Male Voice Choir and friends. The programme includes festive music ranging from evergreens like White Christmas through seasonal stories and monologues to traditional carols. Joining choir performers again this year are popular Ryedale soprano Rachel Reynolds and local musical comedienne Brenda Harper. Starting at 2.30 pm in Malton Methodist Church in Saville Street, the concert is the seventh of its kind by the local choir, which was created in 2007 and is still the only group of its kind in the area. The Choir is expanding after practice nights were switched to Monday. Officials said the change had already brought in new members. To join call Secretary David Ackroyd on 01944 758693. The December 8th performance will be the choir’s first Christmas concert with Vivien Wilcock as new Musical Director. The choir’s former accompanist, Vivien has led the group informally since last year and was selected from several candidates for the post. In other Christmas news, the Male Voice Choir will be the guest of Ryedale Choral Union on December 13th at a concert in Pickering. It is also among the local guest groups taking part in a special benefit concert in Malton Milton Rooms on December 15th for Ryedale Special Families. The choir meanwhile is becoming increasingly popular for local weddings, singing in a wedding ceremony in Settrington in August. It’s the third wedding for the choir after ceremonies in Kirkbymoorside and Burythorpe. Next year the choir joins other North Yorkshire choirs in the National Association of Choirs’ Scarborough Conference and Concert on April 5th. It will also welcome the Isle of Wight’s Newchurch Male Voice Choir for a joint concert in Malton on May 30th 2014.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

We would like to thank our volunteers and supporters for all their help throughout 2013. A special thanks to the Handy Mag for their continued support of local charities, helping to rehome unwanted dogs in this area. 2013 has been a busy year for us with more dogs coming into the rescue for rehoming and 2014 will no doubt be a tough year too.

28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Whilst we do not rehome over the Christmas period, come the new year, if you are considering the addition of a dog to your family, please consider a rescue dog. Most of the local charities have websites with photos and details of their dogs looking to be rehomed so there is bound to be a rescue dog to suit your family. What better way to shake off the winter blues than by wrapping up warm and taking your beloved dog for a brisk walk!

FINANCIAL PLANNING WHATEVER YOUR AGE… Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

I

t’s a weird job – that of a financial planner. On the one hand we’re telling youngsters to think to the future – save up for a rainy day – put something by for a pension – protect you and your family against unforeseen risks. On the other we’re coaching people on how to let go of their money tax efficiently when their need for it on this earth is done. We’re banging on at the middle agers to think about how they’re going to replace their income when they retire. We persuade them to think about what’s really important to them about money. What do you want to do? Where do you want to end up? What about when you’re no longer here? What then? Do you care? We educate those approaching later life that the financial problems they had before aren’t the problems they’ve got now. Do you know how to

make sure your money lasts as long as you do? Do you believe it’s right that the wealthy have to pay more tax on death even though they’ve already contributed – usually more than their fair share - throughout life? Or do you believe that it’s only fair that the rich pay more to make up for those that can’t or won’t make their own way? Do you want to leave an inheritance for the next generation? Or slide into the grave with a pint in one hand and your last penny in the other shouting “Woohoo, what a ride!” You’d be surprised at the range of responses we get to these questions. And that’s how it should be. It wouldn’t do for us all to be the same – and it’s true there’s nowt so queer as folk. It’s not up to us to tell you what your financial goals should be. They’re not our financial goals. Our job is simply to help you work out your financial priorities, and then put the steps in place to achieve them. Whether we agree with them or not. If you’re worried about how much tax you’ll pay on death, the independent consumer association “Which” produces a useful book on Inheritance Tax planning “The Which? Guide to Inheriting & Giving” and we’ve got copies to give away. CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF ALFIE PART 5 AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF A DAY IN PRACTICE.

ALFIE MEETS FREDDIE

I arrived at the vets today feeling thoroughly relaxed after my holiday in France. I shot through the door, my tail wagging madly as I sought out my friends to tell them all about it. Phil was tanned and in good form as he always was when he returned from holiday, which I reckoned meant a few weeks grace before he started getting grumpy again. I was surprised at how busy the practice was. I expected that I would return to find everything exactly how it was when we left.

I was wrong! Lots had happened in the last few weeks. For a start there was a small border terrier in MY BED! Not only that, he had a lady friend in there with him! IN MY BED! He leapt up and ran at me yapping loudly followed closely behind by the female. I stood very still wagging my tail cautiously. I was not entirely sure I would like this pair especially given how noisy the male was and how I had found them in my bed as if they owned the place. They ran a few circles around me and then the female threw herself on her back at my feet. I decided I quite liked her after all. She was pretty and it was always nice to meet a new lady every once in a while, especially one so flirtatious. She can stay in my bed I thought! The noisy male introduced himself as Freddie and the lady as Mabel. Apparently they belonged to Vicky, the vet, who had been off work. Freddie explained that they had been coming to the practice for years but then Vicki had got so big she needed time off and the doctor had sent her home with a baby to help keep her busy. After baby George arrived Vicky got thin again but they had all had to stay at home for another year admiring baby George. Who, Mabel added, could be very noisy and had a tendency to try to grab their tails and eat their dog biscuits. I thanked my lucky stars that Phil

RYEDALE • DECEMBER 2013 • ISSUE 95 went to the gym regularly so wasn’t going to get big and have a baby too! I explained to Freddie that I understood he was a practice dog prior to me but that things had changed and would he please remove himself from my bed and find somewhere else to sleep. He refused and made a very rude gesture at me with his tail. Feeling defeated I skulked off under Phil’s desk. It was clear that Freddie and I were not going to get along which was annoying as I fancied Mabel but would never get past Freddie to get to her! Freddie continued to glare at me all afternoon. Eventually he left Mabel’s side and in a flash I was back in my bed where I belonged with Mabel at my side. When Freddie returned I countered his glare with a smirk and nuzzled further into Mable’s fur where I remained for the rest of the day feeling very pleased with myself. This was war and I was ready to fight for my bed and Mabel, a thought I would ponder all night after I watched her go home with a triumphant Freddie. As told to Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets, who has kindly written it down for me.

utumn has already proved a busy time for Byland with Wass WI.

In September they hosted a Federation Ramble to the Mount Snever Observatory, through Cockerdale and over Byland Moor back to Wass where a delicious lunch was served in the village hall. The monthly meeting was opened to family and friends, who wanted to hear Geoff Snowden and Elizabeth Sanderson talk about their work on the archaeological dig which has unearthed a watermill and many other interesting finds on Yearsley Moor. Everyone was fascinated to see the ancient maps and plans of the area around Wass, Ampleforth and Gilling, to hear about how the area has developed through the centuries, and to examine the archaeological ‘finds’. At the beginning of October the WI produced lunch for the York Veteran Car Club who paused on a rally through the beautiful Ryedale countryside, allowing members the opportunity to examine the spectacular, and highly polished classic cars. Later in the month they were delighted to welcome Helmsley artist Julia Burns to the October meeting. She talked about setting up her successful business Red Hen Originals and demonstrated how the simple technique of potato printing can be used to produce wonderful works of art, and members were enthralled by the many pictures she showed them. The December meeting will be a Christmas Lunch at The Wombwell Arms and early in 2014 there will be talks and demonstrations on painting techniques and button making. We are a small and very friendly WI serving the villages around Wass, Ampleforth, Oswaldkirk and Gilling, always glad to welcome new members on the third Thursday of the month at 7.00pm in Wass Village Hall. For information contact Jane on 01439-788870.

PICKERING MUSICAL SOCIETY PANTO 2014 By Alan Frayn

Beauty and the Beast tells of the beautiful Belle and how she wins the heart of a handsome prince who has been turned into a beast by a wicked fairy, Belladonna. As in all pantomimes, the story is one of true love and good winning over evil. The course of true love never runs smooth and Belle is tested to the limit in her love for her father and her growing relationship with the beast. The show includes lots of songs and dances courtesy of the Sarah Ashworth School of Dance. The cast will be accompanied by a very talented bunch of musicians. There is something for all the family – oh yes there is!! The show runs from 4th – 6th and 8th – 11th January at 7.15pm nightly with matinees at 2.15pm on 4th, 5th and 11th January. Tickets costs £10. £9 (concessions) and £35 for a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children). The Box Office will be open to callers 11am – pm daily from mid December or may be contacted by phone on 01751 474822. You can also email pickeringmusicalsociety@gmail.com

Happy Christmas

FROM MALTON & NORTON CHURCHES

A Christmas message from the Revd Stephen Burgess, Chair of the York & Hull Methodist District... before summer is over. How about taking time to think about what will be really important to you as 25th December draws closer? Churches will be observing Advent from 1st December, and many people, young and old, open doors in an Advent calendar or light an Advent candle each day. There will be church services – Advent processions, Christingle services or carol services – ENJOY IT ALL!

R

ight at the beginning I want to say that I love Christmas, and so it is great to be able to wish all readers of Handy Mag a very Happy Christmas. And here is a handy guide to making the most of preparing for Christmas, enjoying Christmas and after Christmas. Preparing for anything can be jolly hard work – and it can be stressful too. Sometimes shops and advertisements don’t help, when they remind us that Christmas is coming, almost

Christmas comes but once a year, and when it comes it brings good cheer. I hope that might be the case for you, but for some people it might be a sad or lonely time – try really hard to think of those for whom it will be difficult, and maybe there is somebody you can contact or visit at this special time. Don’t forget though, that Christmas is about the birth of a baby who is even more important than a royal baby! Right at the centre of the Christian understanding of Christmas is that God came to this planet as a vulnerable little baby, born in a harsh and fragile part of an occupied country in the Roman empire. Emmanuel is a title of Jesus, and it means that God is with us – especially when we are finding the going tough. ENJOY THAT IMPORTANT PART OF THE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE. I saw an advert for a Boxing Day celebration ages ago, even before

the Christmas adverts were around! Let’s not rush to get Christmas over and done with, and in fact there are twelve days of Christmas anyway. Life will need to get back to some sort of winter normality, but do try to hold on to the hope and goodness enshrined in the Christmas story for much longer than you keep your Christmas cards on show. God loved this little world we live in so much that he sent Jesus, as a baby over 2000 years ago. And God is still with us today! Have a happy Christmas.

COOKING BOXING DAY SOUP

INGREDIENTS: • 1 tbsp sunflower or olive oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 celery sticks, chopped • 2 medium potatoes, about 350g/12oz total weight, peeled and cut into small chunks • 1 tbsp curry paste (optional) or stuffing (optional) • 1.2 litres / 2 pints vegetable stock • 550g / 1lb 4 oz leftover roasted or boiled vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips and squash, roughly chopped. • Add any leftover meat such as turkey, beef, ham, sausages etc. OR this can be left as a vegetarian soup • Salt and pepper for seasoning • Natural yogurt or crème fraîche - to serve

METHOD: Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the celery and fry for 5 minutes, then add the potatoes and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the curry paste or stuffing if using. Cook for a further minute or two, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil and stir well. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Add the leftover veg and meat (if using) into the pan and warm through. Pour the soup into a food processor or blender and either blitz to a smooth purée, or leave a few chunks for texture. Return the soup to the pan. You may need to thin the soup to the consistency you like with hot water or stock, then taste for seasoning. Reheat thoroughly, and pour into bowls with spoonfuls of yogurt or crème fraîche swirled on top, then serve with crusty bread.

A baby was born to an engaged teenage Mum, called Mary. Imagine how she felt when an angel told her she was going to have a baby. Confused? Frightened? How would she react? It was not as I would have expected, Mary simply surrendered to God’s plan. ‘Let it be with me just as you say’, Mary said. Her fiancé, Joseph also saw an angel, but in a dream. ‘Do not be afraid’, Joseph was told, ‘take Mary as your wife’ but name the baby Jesus. A young man, in love, not wanting to humiliate Mary, trusted in a dream and took Mary as his wife. Then, a census of the entire Roman world was ordered by Caesar. Everyone returned to their own town to register. After a tiring journey Mary and Joseph entered an unusually packed Bethlehem. There was nowhere to stay and so Jesus, their Saviour, and the Saviour of the world, was born in a manger. No fuss, no pomp or ceremony, a simple birth, a baby given to two new teenage parents. Yet what an honour to be the first to hold the Son of God, to protect, to love, to kiss and nurture God’s gift to us, the Light of the world. Did they understand the significance of that night? Do we? A date that now marks the centre of history and from which all other historical events are now recorded. It wasn’t the wealthy or influential who first recognised the significance of this event; it was the Shepherds in the fields nearby who came to worship Jesus, the King. It is an extraordinary story that continues to be told around the world. Each year, countless school children audition for the parts of Mary and Joseph and parents clamour to hear their child’s well rehearsed line. In the midst of Christmas celebrations, remember the story. Will we recognise the significance of the event and follow the Shepherds and worship Him? For the first time this year we will be having our Community Carol Service at the Milton Rooms on Sunday 22nd December at 6 pm. We will celebrate, sing carols and remember the story. We invite you to join us.

ELLA... ON ST. NICHOLAS A

s many I am sure are aware, the origins of the modern day Santa Claus (or indeed Father Christmas, because we are British, thank you very much) derive from the historical figure of Saint Nicholas. Now, he may never have been known to fly reindeer across the globe in a single night, but according to almost a thousand years of myths and fables, the life of Saint Nick might just have been considerably more impressive. One of the most well-known fables about him involves a poor man, who couldn’t afford dowries for his daughters. Hearing of his plight, St. Nicholas went to the house, and threw purses full of money, one for each daughter, down the chimney. They landed in a stocking that was drying by the fire – which sounds oddly familiar somehow, don’t you think? Other folklore about him becomes much more interesting. For example, that time when he resurrected three children who had been killed by a butcher, pickled in brine, and were intended to be made into meat pies- Sweeney Todd-style. St. Nicholas prayed to God for the children, thus bringing them back to life again. Another time, he convinced a ship to unload some of its cargo of wheat in his town, promising them that they would not lose any of it. Once they arrived at their final destination, they had exactly the same amount of wheat as when they originally set off, despite the fact that they had unloaded almost two years’ worth of supplies to St. Nicholas. The wheat had magically been multiplied. Quite remarkable! He apparently never ate on a Wednesday or a Friday, and once, during a debate about the nature of God, he got up and slapped a high-ranking bishop across the face, almost losing his own bishop-hood. The excitement didn’t stop even after he died. His bones were robbed from their grave in Turkey, and half of his skeleton ended up in Bari, Italy. (In 2009, the Turkish government formally requested them back again.) The relics in Bari are said to leak a rose scented, clear liquid, which apparently has magical healing powers. Indeed, every year a flask of it is collected and sold. An analysis of the very same bones determined that the man was only five feet high, and had a broken nose. Even in death he is well remembered; Albanians swear by St. Nicholas, and Russian Orthodox churches sing about him every Thursday, not to mention he’s the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, bakers, thieves, children, pawnbrokers, students and more. Oh, and he’s also Santa Claus. - Ella

MOTORING

Volvo XC70 D5 SE LUX Geartronic

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

V

OLVO CARS paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country in 1997 – and then came the less longwinded moniker: the XC70. The Swedish company’s focus in the continuous development of the XC70 model has been to create a well-heeled on-road car with competent, off-road ability. Volvo says to think of it as an “exclusive goose down jacket, designed around those who like their adventure with a true feeling of sophistication”. Pretentious marketing spin? Not really. You see, as well as All-Wheel Drive, Hill Descent Control is a further boost to the XC70’s go-anywhere potential. And these days, fresh exterior design cues sharpen its road presence. If truth be told, the XC70 would look at home in any environment, whether it’s in the middle of the open country or at your place of business.

On the road, IntelliSafe, - Volvo’s active safety system, is a vital part of the driver-centric approach in the XC70. City Safety technology is fitted as standard, and this advanced technology works at speeds of up to 31 mph. You can also fit Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake. In addition, Road Sign Information displays road signs on the instrument panel. Still, a heavyweight, high-centre-of-gravity car like this has its downsides – it’s not amazingly nimble and all four corners tend to squeal if you take bends at speed. The steering also feels slightly lumpy around town. But get it on a long commute or off-road and it’ll fare very well. The six-speed geartronic transmission makes especially light work of any distance driving and acceleration is brisk. Granted - off-road, it’s not as heroic as a pure mudplugger, but the XC70’s talented enough to take the family into the rough – or up a snow covered hill if you need to.

D

ecember is perhaps the one month where, in the build up to Christmas even the hardiest of gardeners may struggle to get out there and do the necessary for their plots. It often means hard frosts and you need to harvest your winter cabbages, celery and cauliflowers this month. Parsnips and swedes are pretty hardy so you can keep these in the ground until you need them. If bad weather is forecast keep some straw handy to cover them and stop the ground from freezing them in. Make sure that you check your stored crops for any sign of disease and remove any that look problematic. Keep an eye on your Brussels too these should be starting now. Be mindful of any snowfall this month or in future weeks and help out your plants and shrubs as best you can by brushing off any settled snow to prevent any damage with branches breaking under the weight. Birds at this time of the year need all the help they can get too. There are some great plants that you can introduce to help them as well as popping out the traditional feeders. These include hawthorn, holly, beriberi and indeed your holly can double up as a craft project for indoor decorations over the festive season. Sit back at your window and watch them feed contentedly whilst you enjoy the view. Why not get out a few gardening books, grab a cup of tea and imagine how you’d like your garden to look next summer? Whatever you choose, pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you’ve done this year and think how green your fingers really could be!

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP If you’d like to see where heat is escaping from your home the camera should show this. With your permission, it can be used to take pictures of the outside, or indoors. You choose which pictures are taken and they belong to you. We can email the images to you or print them out for you. There’s no charge, but if you’d like to make a small donation towards the cost of insuring and calibrating the camera that would be most welcome.

How to book the camera

HOW THERMAL IMAGING CAN HELP TO KEEP HOMES WARM AND BILLS DOWN by Erica Rose

T

wo years ago Kirkbymoorside Environment Group (KMEG) bought a thermal imaging camera with a Lottery grant from the Awards for All scheme. We hope the camera will help local people cut the amount of heat lost from their homes, so saving money on their energy bills as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the town. Thermal imaging is a way of showing where heat is escaping from your home in cold weather. The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. It’s surprising just how much heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, up the chimney of an unused fireplace, and through poorly insulated roofs and walls. For example, this infrared image shows not only how heat is being lost through a bay window, but also through the wall from a radiator under the window. Once the householder knows this, they can look at possible solutions, which could be as cheap and simple as using thick curtains and putting foil on the wall behind the radiator to reflect heat back into the room.

60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

KMEG volunteers have been using the camera successfully in the Kirkbymoorside area from late autumn through the winter months into early spring. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! To book the camera, email Helen Gundry at helenspost@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01751 432447. We can then fix the best time to call round with the camera. For more information about the camera and thermal imaging, check our website www.kms-environmentgroup.org.uk

Local Shopping on Sundays The local trend for Sunday shopping is up by over 40% since 2010, as shown by state-of-the-art footfall recorders in Malton town centre, where there is also free parking in the market place. Saturday traditionally is a busy shopping day, while Sunday is more relaxed and leisurely. Many businesses now open on Sundays for shoppers to enjoy the wide range of independent shops, together with great eating-places. Malton and Norton businesses sell bespoke as well as well-known brands so there’s no need to travel to York or Leeds to find a good shopping experience. www.totallylocallymaltonandnorton.co.uk 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
