elcome to the first Handy Mag of 2014; already 1 month in. I hope you’ve had a good start.

For the HandyMags, in getting the first edition to you, the New Year always starts with a flurry of activity and it is only after getting the magazines to print that I feel back to normal. However, this New Year is with a difference for the HandyMag; and we’re quite excited. Having run the magazines from home for many years, alongside the family dogs and being everavailable for the childrens’ return from school, we happened upon an office in Malton that was simply too good to pass over. Next month I’ll be talking to you about the merits of our more business-like situation and the drawbacks of not being able to work in slippers (and that applies to Nicky too!), in no longer mixing work with putting the washing on and having consultations with the dogs (great listeners). In all seriousness it will be good, making us much more accessible to businesses and the community we serve. I’m really excited, though I can see not sharing my lunch with the dogs and the easy supply of cakes and patisserie being a bit of an issue, especially post-Christmas! Drop in and see us at 5a Market Street in Malton. There is free parking in the Market Place for 2 hours and when you’ve visited us, there are lots of lovely independent retailers to visit afterwards. Anyway enough about us. This months’ magazine includes an unprecedented number of articles about our local businesses and the events pages are bursting. Normally February is a quiet month; but this year we all seem to have hit the ground running. A year full of early promise and optimism! Well done to Mrs Sellars and Mrs Sayers for winning the November and December competitions. Until next time…

AND TO THE TAXMAN I BEQUEATH…

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Anyone that’s being paying attention will know I’ve been banging on throughout 2013 about families losing out on their Inheritance. There’s two main threats – (1) the cost of paying for elderly care (if you have more than £23,250 in savings) and (2) “death tax” – payable at 40% on anything you own above a pre-set threshold, currently £325,000. I make no apology for going on about this like a stuck record. If you had to sit in front of families after the death of a parent – which is difficult enough as it is – and tell them that a big chunk of the Estate is headed for the tax man, you’d probably do the same. Often these families can’t believe that their smart and caring parent could let this happen. “Dad would be turning in his grave if he thought all that money was going to the taxman”, they say. “Mum would have wanted us, not the care home, to get her savings”, they say. And often we have to tell them that Mum and Dad were aware of these problems, because we told them. More than once. And we have records of these discussions on file. The reason Mum and Dad don’t do anything about it, even when they’re made aware of it, is either because they think they’re going to spend it (unlikely) or because they think they’re immortal (even more unlikely).

If you’re worried about how much tax you’ll pay on death, the independent consumer association “Which” produces a useful book on Inheritance Tax planning – “The Which? Guide to Inheriting & Giving” and we’ve got copies to give away. To get a FREE copy – ring O330 100 1743 and ask for Helen, or email/send your name, address, email and phone number to helen@pen-life.co.uk, Pen-Life Chartered Financial Planners, Equinox House, Clifton Park, York YO30 5PA, by 1 March 2014, and we’ll send you your FREE copy or visit the website www.givingandinheriting.com.

But the fact is that more than £3 billion pounds is collected every year by the Inland Revenue in death tax. And a good chunk more in paying for elderly care. There are steps you can take to avoid this. And I intend to get as many people as I can to take action in 2014, before it’s too late. So their family, and not the Government, end up with the money they’ve worked all their lives for.

KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen

18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us,

because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 23 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and

enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result.

Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want.

The Instyle Team.

Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week... “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

he Stables in Thornton le Dale has become a mecca for anyone looking for a unique piece for their home. At one end of the building is Selby’s Antiques & Fine Art, a fine art gallery and antiques and collectables shop that moved into The Stables late in 2013. At the opposite end you’ll find Rustic Relics which offers an eclectic mix of antique and painted furniture, collectables and lighting. Between the two shops it would be a surprise if you didn’t find something special that fits your interior perfectly. The original 18th century stables of The Hall, though still evident, have been transformed into showrooms with wide ranging displays of period antiques, distressed hand-painted furniture, cut glass and quirky pieces alongside fine art.

SHERIFF HUTTON JUMBLIES

The Sheriff Hutton Jumblies’ Jumble Sales continue to be extremely popular with people coming from far and wide, and they have just completed another record breaking year raising money for good causes. The total raised during 2013 was £17,122, which included a new record for one Jumble Sale of £2,200 raised for Diabetes UK. Working alongside support groups they also raised money for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Sheriff Hutton School PTFA and Play Area, The Chanticleer Singers, Ryedale Leisure, British Heart Foundation, Alne Hall, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Samaritans and the NSPCC. 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Ray Selby, owner at Selby’s and an antiques dealer with 25 years’ experience, is convinced that antiques can look great in any home. He says “Seeing an aesthetic in something is innate and the fact that it is classed as an antique is a bonus. Period antiques can look perfect in contemporary or traditional settings.” The first fine art exhibition held at Selby’s featured recent works by William Selby who is Ray’s uncle, alongside other Yorkshire artists. BOOKS Boffin Brainchild Jill Jennings

Review by Jack Whalen, age 8. This book kept my attention from start to finish. Boffin, the robot, is a funny character and easily gets bored. All he wants to do is live the life of a real boy so when Tom comes along he sees his chance. I loved the adventures that Tom and Boffin had together. Boffin often got the meanings of words mixed up which ended in him doing funny and silly things. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my friends. Review by Jack’s mum, Nicky This is the story of the world’s first free-thinking robot, Boffin Brainchild. When Tom goes on a school trip to see Boffin Brainchild, Boffin decides to leave with Tom on the bus! Scared of being accused of stealing the robot, Tom feels his only option is to disguise Boffin as a real boy. How long can Tom and Boffin keep up the pretence? Humorous, interesting and with drama this book is perfect for children from the age of 8 upwards. This story of friendship and adventure is hugely entertaining and with some valuable lessons for life thrown in, you will find it hard to put this book down.

The Guts

Roddy Doyle Review by Kath Bennett To be honest, it is a shock to find out that Jimmy Rabbitte is middle aged with teenage children. It shouldn’t be - after all, The Commitments was over 20 years ago - but it is. It seems to be a bit of a shock to Jimmy too - and the shock is compounded when he discovers that he has cancer. The Commitments was the first of Doyle’s Barrytown trilogy which followed the fortunes of the Rabbitte family in Dublin. Doyle’s style is not for everyone, and his language is not for the faint hearted, but the dialogue still sails off the page. If you have read the Barrytown trilogy, this is like meeting a bunch of old friends in the pub. If you haven’t, then read it anyway. Odds are you will go back to the original books to meet the characters as they were in the beginning. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

or the first time it is possible to produce new microphone patterns by allowing an interactive exchange of data between the left and right hearing instruments... so what does this mean for the user?

Now it is possible to narrow the beam focus to just one individual, with the result that the listener is now able to fully participate in conversation. By wirelessly linking the hearing instruments and exchanging audio signals in real time, it is now possible to narrow the focus to one particular individual, reducing interfering noise coming not only from the back and sides but now, for the first time, from near the front as well.

By transmitting the full audio signal between hearing instruments using real-audio wireless exchange, the microphones of both hearing instruments work together to focus on sound sources coming directly from the front while In summary they offer a minimizing competing noise noticeable improvement in from all directions. Most adults have some degree of gum disease its one of the most common diseases in the world! Long-standing or Chronic Periodontal Disease is a major cause of tooth loss. When you visit your dentist they measure your gum health, ideally we are looking for scores of Zero (figures of 3 or above are bad news)

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

To aid your gum health follow these tips and see if your dentist is impressed at your next examination. 1. Use disclosing tablets to stain plaque on your teeth, this allows you to see where you need to brush more. Remember wear your specs and use a good light to see clearly. 2. Use a compact head toothbrush to allow easy access to all areas of the mouth. The small round heads on electric brushes are ideal for getting behind the teeth. All heads and toothbrushes should be changed every 3 months. 3. If your gums bleed keep brushing, they need more , not less, attention in that area. 4. Use interdental cleaning aids every day. Floss if you are dextrous or interdental brushes or sticks if not. Your dentist will be able to suggest the best size and type for your mouth. Avoid metal or wooden sticks these can damage the gums. 5. Mouthwashes can help but only plaque and tartar removal can keep gum disease at bay. 6. Not all people get bleeding gums as a sign they have gum disease, especially smokers, if you can stop smoking, your gums will be better for it. For a thorough gum assessment and personalised preventative advice call Georgina at HDP and take control of your oral health.

COOKING PORK & LENTIL BAKE WITH APPLE Diane Johnson

This meal goes a long way for a small budget, warming and delicious - perfect for a winter supper. Good butchers and some supermarkets will sell pigs cheeks - they’re a great economical cut and become deliciously tender with a long, slow cook. Diced pork is a great substitute. INGREDIENTS: • 6 sticks celery, washed and chopped • 2 medium sized onions diced • 450g or 8 individual pigs cheeks • 450g cooking apples, peeled, cored and quartered • 3 carrots peeled and batoned • 2 parsnips peeled and sliced thickly

METHOD: • Fry the celery and the onion together in the sunflower oil until softened in a large casserole dish. • If using pigs cheeks remove any tough membranes or fatty tissue and cut each cheek into 4. • Add the pork to the celery and onion and cook until the meat is browned on all surfaces. • Add the apples, carrots, apple juice and stock. • Finally add the lentils and stir together making sure the meat and the lentils are submerged in the stock. • Cook in a slow oven (150ºC/ Gas Mark 2 1/2) for 2 hours. You can cook it for longer and the meat will become even more deliciously tender. • If using diced pork keep an eye on it, but 1 hour to 1 and a half hours should be perfect. • Taste for seasoning before serving. Adjust as required. • Serve in dishes with crusty bread and spring greens or purple sprouting broccoli.

• 500ml apple juice • 500ml good stock • 200g puy lentils, rinsed and picked over for any stones • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil EQUIPMENT: Large casserole dish.

usband and wife team Graham and Michelle Hall were so fed up with the fees charged at the bigger auction sites, they decided to set up a site themselves. Graham said “We started to sell things lying around our home but as time went on we found that any money we made was simply being taken up with invoice charges. We thought that it must be possible to charge people £1 per item and have no listing fee and ‘Pound2Sell’ was born.” With each item just costing £1 to list, it is fair to both seller and buyer with all costs kept to a minimum. Uploading information about your items to sell is simple and you can even upload up to 12 photos for your £1 fee (There is the option to pay for more if you wish). Graham and Michelle would like their site to become as well-known as some of their bigger competitors and are asking for your help to get it going. LET YOUR HOME PUT

CASH BACK INTO YOUR POCKET Hundreds of property owners in this region are reaping the benefits of turning to Renewable Energy to power their homes.

P

eak Power Systems, based in Pickering and one of Yorkshire’s leading independent installation specialists, believe the technology has signalled a new era in how we generate electricity, heat our houses, help the environment and save money.

34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a new initiative that provides grants and subsidies for people replacing their old heating systems with more efficient, energy saving alternatives. For many people with older central heating systems, the RHI payments will cover all of your installation and running costs for the life of the scheme.

The Government-backed Feedin Tariff scheme for Solar PV has proved a big incentive for many homeowners, and with the recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive for Heat pump systems, renewable technology is here to stay. SOLAR PV guarantees cheaper electricity for the life of the system, and provides an investment income far greater than the current return on cash savings.

Mark Chappell, founder of Peak Power Systems, said: “We’ve installed hundreds of systems throughout North Yorkshire, many of them for people who

are retired or nearing retirement and want to protect themselves from the ever-rising costs of electricity and heating.

“By investing in modern technologies, you insulate yourself against the ever rising cost of fuel and electricity; and when you set the cost of the installation against the return on your investment, you can expect the system to pay for itself in less than seven years”. He added: “There’s no charge for us to assess the property, carry out a survey and provide a quote. In fact, we recommend all customers go through this exercise to make sure renewable energy is right for them. It’s in our best interests to make sure the customer makes the correct decision

a warehouse or farm buildings, but our main aim is to keep the cost to the customer as low as possible.

Mark and his partner, Debbie, launched Peak Power Systems on the strength of their long-held interest in renewable energy, coupled with Mark’s background in electrical engineering. The company is accredited with the MCS (Micro-generation Certificate Scheme), which requires an annual inspection of its work as well as the standard of customer service. One of the company’s biggest projects so far has been the installation of a large solar PV system at a caravan park in Wrelton. Mark said: “We’re small enough to provide a very good one-to-one service to our customers but at the same time big enough to tackle just about any project, whether it is for a home, an office complex,

“Most of our work is in and around Pickering and the wider North Yorkshire region, although we have completed projects as far away as Scotland, and as a company working mostly with local people our aim is to provide a first class job at realistic prices and with no hidden bills at the end of it”. For more information on Peak Power Systems and what we can do for you, or if you would like more information on how Solar PV and Heat Pumps systems work, please contact Mark or Debbie on 01751 476989 or visit www. peakpowersystems.co.uk.

n 8th April 2014 Microsoft will end support for both Windows XP and Office 2003. Anyone running their business network with Windows Server 2003 servers should be planning for end of support in 2015. Windows XP has been around for a long time and has been so popular that many users have stuck with it, probably because it was much more reliable than Windows 95, 98, Me and 2000 but also better received that its successor, MS Vista. Designed with internet and email access built-in, Windows XP connected with ease to printers and other peripherals and brought in new security measures for PCs. If for no other reason, security should be why you replace your machine this year. You will be familiar with the weekly updates your machine receives from Microsoft and many of these resolve security ‘holes’ in the operating system. If you are running internet security software this is unlikely to offer protection for Windows XP after April 2014, making

Windows 7 has been superseded by Windows 8, designed to be easy to use on touch screens. This has not always gone down well with laptop and desktop users who have found it ‘longwinded’ to shut-down and some are annoyed by the ‘tiles’. Over the years Microsoft have released service packs to Windows operating systems which are typically a collection of bug and security fixes. Microsoft has recently released Windows 8.1 that has reintroduced the Start button to make it easier to shutdown desktops and laptops. Windows 8 also introduces and integrates more ‘cloud’ services. So if you’re a Windows XP user where should you go next? Jump ship from Microsoft-based PCs to Apple-based Macs.

Setting your Intention and Focus for 2014 The early part of the New Year is a great time to identify the changes you need to make in your business in order to improve your performance over the next few months. You should have a clear idea of your turnover and profit goals and a number of key strategies to get your business moving. Putting a plan together is often the easy part, the difficulty comes in the execution of the plan when the business gets busy and you get sucked into working IN the business. Savvy business owners know that they need time to work ON the development and growth of the business, so setting your intention and focus everyday and blocking out time to do this is paramount to growth. The first step to doing this is to look at what you can delegate, who you can delegate to and establish how you want the job done. Putting systems and procedures together for your team is the only way you’ll ever start to get control of your time. You can always supplement your notes with the use of video or photographs to give more clarity. This will immediately save you valuable time and stop you exclaiming “no-one else can do the job like me!” Running a business isn’t rocket science, it just requires you to get a firm grip on the helm, know where you’re heading and get the crew to do the jobs they’re paid to do. The results will speak for themselves. Join us on our next ‘Secrets to Business Success’ Seminar to learn how to get your business running more smoothly in 2014. Call now for more details.

Rainbow Data Ltd is the umbrella company for three separate services – repairs and refurbishment of car key fobs; smart phones and tablets, and computers. Proprietor Ian Young spotted a gap in the market for repairing remote car keys and providing as-goodas-new car remotes at vastly reduced prices. As the first person to offer this service, Ian initially worked online, offering a mail order service, rapidly becoming a market leader. With demand increasing, so did the need for additional staff. And with new staff came

new skill sets and opportunities to move into related markets – including smart phones repairs and computers.

Rainbow Data are celebrating a busy year in business and have been able to expand their range of services. In their smartly refurbished office at the top of Pickering Market Place, you can now find mobile phone accessories for many types of phone, new and refurbished computers, a computer repair service and tablets.

He said, “I take pains to use the best quality materials from local merchants who I personally trust. “I do all the plumbing work myself, and I only work with the best local tradesmen I can find – I have a trusted electrician, joiner, tiller and a plumbing subcontractor working alongside me.” Paul prefers to source all the bathrooms fixtures and fittings himself, so he can guarantee the quality of the finished bathroom. A SIGN OF MADNESS? Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

DISCOUNT FOR 2 OR MORE ROOMS

If talking to yourself is the first sign of madness, what is talking to God the first sign of? Even if you believe there is a God, let’s be honest, why talk to a God you have never seen? Is talking to God a sign of desperation, madness or a brave step of faith?

A recent post on Facebook got me thinking because in the post, parents were thanking people because they believed their unwell child had been helped by the ‘prayers, vibes and thoughts’ of others. Does this mean a God responded to mere ‘vibes and thoughts’ or were they ignored in favour of more ‘formal’ or ‘genuine prayers?’ What is a prayer? How do we talk to God? Can anyone talk to God? If God did respond to ‘prayers, vibes and thoughts’, why do so many other requests seemingly go unanswered? Even as a Minister, I can understand the three objections expressed by an Atheist to people who had offered to pray for him. Firstly, he didn’t believe there was a God who could/would answer, secondly he didn’t believe talking to God should be given priority over physically doing something to help someone in need and thirdly, he didn’t believe it was necessary for people to tell him they were praying for him. I also believe that talking to God can be an excuse for not giving practical help to those in need and that telling others we are praying for them can be more about our own egos than about genuine concern. However, in my role as a Minister, I meet people every day who believe that there is a God who listens to them and find comfort and strength in talking with God. They don’t use set prayers, they just find a quiet place, free from distractions and talk to God as if He was sitting on the chair next to them. Are they going mad? It seems that six out of seven people don’t think so! 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

MERLIN TRADING UK LIMITED

Can talking to God change anything? Despite these genuine questions, a survey commissioned by the Church of England, and reported in the Guardian Newspaper last year, found six out of seven people in the UK talk to God and only one in seven insisted that they wouldn’t try talking to God, even in a crisis. That is a staggering 85% of people in the UK talk to God (pray)!

PROTECT YOUR HORSE...

AT DISCOUNTED RATES By Clare Brash MRCVS, Station House Vets

T

he PR disaster which stopped numerous parents from vaccinating their children for MMR has led to a huge increase in these diseases. For vaccination to work for everyone 70% of the population must be covered. This is called “herd health” in veterinary terms. We as a profession have a similar failing in the uptake of horse influenza vaccines, such that now only about 40% of the population of horses and ponies are protected. Horse flu is a very contagious disease, that spreads like wildfire through an unprotected group. In Australia, 2007, infection caused huge problems and catastrophe for equine events as

the horses were not vaccinated. The saying “Influenza doesn’t kill horses but it does kill horse events” is true but the poor animals suffer a terrible dry harsh cough and young or debilitated animals can die from complications. As vets we are alerted by text whenever there is a confirmed outbreak of influenza in this country. Last year there were 12 outbreaks which were controlled by early recognition and movement bans. But the fear is that now the vaccination level has tailed off with people becoming complacent about flu or struggling to afford it in these difficult times, we may have a disaster soon and an epidemic. Which would halt all horse movement, all shows,

RYEDALE & SCARBOROUGH CATS WELFARE Registered Charity Number: 1039994

The Ryedale & Scarborough Cats Welfare was formed in 1992 as a small charity organisation run by volunteer cat lovers. The primary responsibility of the organisation is to ensure the numbers of foster cats in their care are well looked after. Where possible they take in

52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

unwanted, stray or abandoned cats and kittens and look after them until a good home and a loving new owner can be found. Naturally this involves giving these cats huge amounts of TLC but also means that all their expenses have to be paid for, including expensive veterinary bills, which may occur for neutering, operations, vaccinations and all other ailments. As a small charity organisation, they rely heavily on organising fundraising events, donations and memberships which goes towards the ever increasing costs of veterinary bills. They also provide support when foster carers have to pay for the neutering of both male and female cats. Donated food

is also distributed between the foster carers. Annual membership of the Cats Welfare is £6.50 per person. Members receive newsletters to keep them up to date with fundraising events, cats rescued, re-homing of cats, cat stories and other interesting facts. If you share their love of cats, please get in touch with the Charity and offer your support. All voluntary help and ideas are gratefully received. RYEDALE DOG RESCUE

L

ife is busier than ever for the Ryedale Dog Rescue team...

We all know the line ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ but sadly for many dogs that is often the case and in January the local pound was fuller than ever with unwanted and abandoned dogs. Visiting the pound is a necessary but heartbreaking task for the volunteers at Ryedale Dog Rescue as we try to rescue as many dogs as we can. Inevitably we often take more than we can really afford and this year is no exception so our new year’s resolution is to FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE!!! Could you spare £3 per month to help us with our fundraising efforts to rescue and care for dogs like Amos below? We are a local charity run entirely by volunteers so you can be assured that every single penny is spent rescuing and caring for our dogs.

DOG OF THE MONTH - AMOS Amos came to us due to a change in his owners circumstances. He is a stocky little three year old, happy, lively brindle staffie who has lived with teenage children. At the kennels he has settled well and been fine around other dogs but typical of his breed he loves human attention and would love to be back in a home to call his own. If you would like to find out more about Amos or any of the dogs that we currently have for adoption please call Rosie on 07581 324153. For more information on the rescue, the dogs we currently have for adoption and how you can help please visit www.ryedaledogrescue.com or join Ryedale Dog Rescue on Facebook. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 53

PLEASE HELP!

I

t is our busy time of year again with an increase in requests to take in dogs beginning on Christmas Day.

We receive so many phone messages and emails where we (or other charities) seem to be the first point of call. People do not seem to be prepared to work through problems, or seek help and think the solution is to hand their dog to a charity for them to deal with the problems. We urge anyone who has a loving dog who suddenly seems to change character to first check with their vet to see if there are any underlying issues, then secondly seek the help of a behaviourist. Likewise if you have a puppy or new dog and they are misbehaving please do not let the problem escalate for weeks until you are no longer able to cope. A few visits from a behaviourist will give you the help and support you need. Why not join a dog training club, it isn’t all about obedience work, many clubs do fun and games sessions, agility

etc resulting in a happy, active, obedient dog and you can enjoy making new, like minded friends. The expression “You get out of it what you put in” sums up life with your loyal and loving companion and it is the least they deserve. Having a dog in your life brings loyal and loving companionship and a little effort to sort out any problems is surely not too much to ask. Has your pet piled on the pounds over Christmas? By Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

D

id you know that feeding your 10kg dog 1oz of cheese is the equivalent of you eating 1½ burgers? Or that feeding your 4.5kg cat a saucer of milk is the equivalent of you eating 4 burgers? Obesity is a increasing problem in our pets, with many owners unaware of what a ‘normal’ weight is for their animal. An animal with an ideal body condition should have a tucked in waistline when viewed from above, and you should be able to feel their ribs when running your hands over their chest - a sagging tummy or loss of an obvious waist indicates obesity. An overweight pet is at a higher risk from diabetes, heart disease and increased blood pressure, respiratory problems and pain from arthritic joints. Weight gain can also make it difficult for them to groom properly, and this can lead to skin problems and general discomfort. Ultimately, obesity in your pet can cause a shortened lifespan.

When you make the decision to put your pet on a diet it is important to aim for gradual weight loss. A good place to start is to check that you are feeding the right amount of food. As well as watching what your pet eats, you can also help encourage weight loss and maintain a healthy lifestyle by increasing your pet’s exercise levels. The nurses at Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic are running weight clinics throughout January & February, so if you have any questions about weight loss, or would like your pet to join our weight control programme please ring us at your local branch for information.

ACKLAM

NOW IS THE TIME TO GO UNDERCOVER The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be blooming cold! It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment. If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame, then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come. If space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option. Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. If you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one (try free cycle). We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on. So, what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer. Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon? Other jobs for this month: Plant out onion sets and chit seed potatoes 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

MALTON’S MONTHLY FOOD MARKETS 2014 DATES ARE ANNOUNCED!

T

his popular foodie event will hold its first market of 2014 on Saturday 8th March when Masterchef finalist Sara Danesin Medio from York will be the guest chef. The Market will then follow the regular format of operating every second Saturday throughout the year, from March through to December, from 9am to 3pm at the Milton Rooms – with the exception of May when organisers will be busy with arrangements for the annual Food Festival. Each month there is a range of top quality food and drink from award-winning local producers together with a top local or national chef offering free cookery demonstrations. The Monthly Food Market – a spin-off from the annual Food Lovers Festival (May 24th and 25th, 2014) – has proved increasingly popular throughout 2013 with a record number of stallholders attending in December. With free parking, free entry and free chef demonstrations, it is a must-visit event for anyone interested in learning new culinary skills and tasting the best of the best in local food and drink. The future dates are 12th April, 14th June, 12th July, 9th August, 13th September, 11th October, 8th November and 13th December. Markets organiser Tom Naylor-Leyland said: “We are delighted that Sara will be in our cookery theatre on March 8th. “Sara’s love of creating stylish, delicious food is captivating and we will be able to see first-hand how she injects that passion into every dish.

62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Getting to the final of Masterchef is an incredible feat and Sara’s career as a cook is going from strength to strength. We already know that she buys her ingredients from some of our Market’s award-winning producers – so not only can visitors to the Market see a top-class cookery demonstration, they can also purchase the best of ingredients right here in Malton.” The 2014 Markets will again feature free tea or coffee for everyone who makes a purchase at the Market, with donations going towards the Malton CIC, the not-for-profit organisation that operates the monthly Markets and annual Food Lovers Festival. The CIC – a community interest company – is actively seeking more people to join the volunteering team that runs the Markets and Festival. Tom said: “Our volunteers are wonderful, helping with anything from setting up stalls, guiding people to parking spaces or serving coffee. We would love to hear from anyone interested in joining in. Becoming a Festival or Markets volunteer is a very fulfilling experience as the community spirit really ‘shines’ through.” Further information can be found on www.maltonyorkshire.co.uk

re-gain your Conservatory! Is your conservatory too hot in summer and too cold in winter? “Exactly the sort of company I like to deal with. Having high standards I was unsure about using a smaller business, however, on first meeting Andrew we knew we had made the right choice. As promised the work was completed within the timescale quoted and the finish is exceptional. e-Gain Conservatory Solutions has developed a system that tackles the problem, primarily through a high performance insulated Before system fitted to the contours of your existing conservatory roof. When the Wynne family were desperate for space with their expanding family and no money left for an extension, their thoughts turned to their little-used cold storage space hogging the garden, also known as the conservatory! Their aged conservatory was unbearably cold in the winter and in the summer the heat hit you the minute you stepped through the front door. “We installed an insulated ceiling to our conservatory and our home was transformed,” says Angela. “The conservatory has become the hub of our home. Even though it is south facing, we are able to relax on the sofa all year round until bed time and it is a fantastic playroom even early morning.”

In the summer…

Whichever way your conservatory faces, the polycarbonate or glass roof is likely to allow the suns glare through. The Re-Gain system forms an effective barrier stopping dazzling glare and unnecessary heat building up in the room, reducing the summer temperature by up to 80% and allowing you to use the room without the noise of a fan or air conditioning unit.

MOTORING SEAT Alhambra SE 2.0 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer

P

EOPLE CARRIERS just aren’t sexy. That’s a fact. But SEAT’s Alhambra is a perennially popular one. As an authentic Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the almighty Alhambra’s adaptability fits just as well to family necessities as it does to the needs of the mile-munching business driver. With a combined fuel consumption figure of around 50 mpg, the Alhambra SE 2.0 TDI CR Ecomotive 140 PS won’t rob you at the pumps either.

Lifetime Ownership Guarantee

The present incarnation of the motor, launched in late 2010, is longer than its forerunner - and wider. There’s plenty of breathing space for adults to sit happily, even in the third row of fold-away seats, whilst the big sliding doors allow fantastically easy access. When configured as a five-seater the Alhambra has 885 litres of luggage space available, which swells to a vast maximum of 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use. Aesthetically, the MPV won’t be to everyone’s taste. Beneath its so-so skin, the Alhambra’s TDI engine, on test here, generates 138bhp. The stock safety equipment is, like much of the Alhambra, impressive. It involves 7 airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag. Also standard is electronic braking assist, tyre pressure monitoring, and stability aids. With some truly decent features, it’s no shock to learn it was not only named Best MPV by Diesel Car, but voted Best MPV in WhatCar? Car of the Year 2011, 2012 and 2013! Such a good vehicle comes at a cost though. This car, bought new, isn’t that far off the £30,000 mark. But, let’s face it, when it comes to transporting your family around, safety is priceless.

ELLA...

ON VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of life partners and love. There are several such days each year to remember that there are people who love us and probably need reminding of that fact with a card that has a poem in it. Sharing the love, isn’t it adorable? The Ancient Greeks had four different words for love. Storge was a love between family members, éros was a romantic love, agápe for a selfless, giving kind of love - all three are recognisably celebrated in our modern calendar. Their final definitive type of love was called philia, meaning the type of love shared between friends, including the idea of loyalty and common interests. This is the only one of the four which appears to be missing from our celebration days, which to me seems more than unfair. To be considered unworthy of its own special day implies that we undervalue the importance of friendship. Why is it that these people, the ones we have specifically selected rather than simply got stuck with, are less deserving of recognition for being such a significant part our lives? Being single is perfectly normal, not giving to charity is sometimes understandable, having no family is unfortunate but can be supplemented by other relationships. However, being friendless is perhaps the saddest thing imaginable. Besides, who is it that we turn to when our other relationships turn sour? In fact, thanks to social media, even the word “friend” has been umbrella-ed out to mean anyone you may or may not have met at a party two weeks ago. Although in reality, philia is arguably one of the most fragile kinds of love - a friendship is not only sinkable, it takes effort to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, I probably wouldn’t rally for the instalment of a “friendship day” to the list of annual events, not merely because it sounds horribly tacky, but it’s not all that surprising to learn that such a thing was already invented by a greetings card company in order to increase sales in August. Instead, perhaps it would be more sensible to simply hand over all of the days that are not reserved for siblings, parents, spouses, crushes, and everyone else, to the celebration and appreciation of our friends, who help us deal with all of the above. ARE WE THE LONGEST RUNNING CHOIR IN RYEDALE? Miserables and Miss Saigon) and Disney (Beauty and the Beast). In 1998 Madeline was appointed Worldwide Musical Supervisor for Riverdance with responsibilities for productions as far away as Sydney, Broadway and London. And if that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Madeline also played piano with several of the top European Orchestras and most recently with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

R

yedale Choral Union first met on 12th January 1951. It was the idea of the Lastingham WI with the ladies of the WI, their husbands and friends from Lastingham and the surrounding villages becoming the first choir members. They were known simply as ‘The Lastingham Choir’. The choir was run as part of the Evening Institute classes organised by the Local Education Authority. They would meet every Friday evening in Lastingham village hall before eventually moving their rehearsals to Appleton-le-Moors village hall where they stayed for well over 30 years and by the mid 1980’s the choir became known as the Ryedale Choral Union. In the late 1990’s the village hall had to undergo a major refurbishment resulting in the choir relocating rehearsals to the Potter Hill Methodist Schoolroom in Pickering and they have remained there ever since! Last September the Choir was delighted to welcome Madeline Hudson as their new conductor. Madeline’s career to date has embraced a wide variety of musical styles where she has performed with many of the top West End shows including productions for Andrew Lloyd Webber (as conductor of the Phantom of the Opera), Cameron Mackintosh (Les

After twelve house moves in eighteen years, Madeline and her husband Gareth, (also a conductor) decided that for the first time they would live where they wanted to live and not where work dictated. Hence, home for them now is the Moors. Madeline says “I am delighted to be asked to conduct the Ryedale Choral Union and look forward to a very fruitful relationship with a choir from an area that I can now genuinely call home. They have already shown me great commitment and ambition and I hope I can play a part in fulfilling their aspirations.” Madeline’s increasing connection with the Ryedale music scene also includes a vocal coaching position at Kirkham Henry Performing Arts School in Malton, the position of organist for the parishes of Lastingham and Rosedale and involvement with several local groups including the Bradbury Centre in Eskdale. If you are interested in joining the Ryedale Choral Union you would be most welcome to come along to the Methodist Church Hall, Potter Hill in Pickering on a Friday at 7.30pm or contact Kate Pickup on 01751 477340.
