elcome to the January edition.
When you receive this magazine Christmas will have been and gone, warm summer holidays seem like a lifetime away and we’re all feeling the effects of too much festive indulgence. Never fear, your Handy Mag is full of new things to do, places to go and people who can help you make a fresh start in 2015. Whilst writing I’m still trying to get ready for Christmas and looking forward to taking a break. I always forget how exhausting this time of year is. I hope you’ve managed some down time over the Christmas period. We’ve had a great 2014 here at the Handy Mag and have really enjoyed playing our part in promoting local businesses, services and community groups and charities. We’ve enjoyed meeting lots of lovely local people in the office and look forward to supporting our local area into 2015. Slimming World groups in the area have also had a fantastic year. Congratulations to Linda, Amanda, Phoebe and Louise for helping their members lose a whopping 1421 stones in weight over the year. You can read all about it on p63 and maybe it will give all of us a bit of motivation to get rid of that excess Christmas weight. Our next deadline is Tuesday 6th January – always a challenge right after New Year! If you have any events or would like to promote your business in this edition, pleases let us know as soon as possible. Don’t forget to keep in touch on Twitter @ Handymag, Facebook, by email to marianne@ thehandymag.co.uk or visit our website at www. thehandymag.co.uk for up to date listings of events and all of our advertisers. Congratulations to Mrs Scaling from Sinnington for winning the November competition and thank you to everyone who sends in entries. Until next month...

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
Kept
DJ Taylor Billed as a Victorian Mystery, this novel by DJ Taylor is a true page turner in the style of Dickens, Wilkie Collins and the like. With multiple narratives and a range of perspectives, Taylor weaves a web of intrigue around the life and death of Mr Henry Ireland and his wife, which surprises and delights the reader. The novel begins with an arresting episode in which two men find themselves by a Scottish loch undergoing a series of challenges to steal rare birds’ eggs. This links them to the strange but eminent naturalist James Dixey, who in turn becomes the guardian of a strangely disturbed young woman. At times the narrative thread is truly puzzling, and the reader must connect and theorize for themselves – but this is no bad thing, and at least we can read on at our own pace rather than having to wait, in the Victorian manner, for the next instalment. There are plenty of potential heroes and heroines, and a smattering of particularly villainous villains, for us to engage with too. One for those dark winter nights in front of the fire – abandon the television and curl up with a good book instead. Although be warned – you may stay up later than you had intended, reading on to the finish!

Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! Richard Scarry
Millions of children have grown up with picture books written and illustrated by Richard Scarry. By the time he died in 1994 he’d sold more than 100 million copies around the world. One of the best known is Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! To celebrate its 40th birthday recently, the Designer Paul Smith – a huge Scarry fan himself - was asked to redesign the work while retaining the charm of Scarry’s original drawings. There was also a boxed set which was limited to just 1000 copies and is already re-selling for hundreds of pounds a copy. While most of us will never get the chance to own the boxed set, the new-look book is well worth seeking out. It has certainly impressed Scarry’s son Huck, also a children’s writer and illustrator, who said: “Paul Smith and his team have amazed me. It’s Richard Scarry seen with Paul Smith’s eyes.” For those who don’t know the work, every manner of moving machinery is riotously depicted in a story which sees the pig family head to the beach for a picnic. On their journey they encounter every vehicle known, from the forklift to the locomotive, and many vehicles that are not known, from the pumpkin car to the broom-o-cycle. Each detailed spread provides the opportunity to make up stories and describe situations. Will Officer Flossy catch Dingo? Will Rollo Rabbit catch his runaway steamroller? And can you find the goldbug on every page?

EDWARD CHARLES PAINTER & DECORATOR FAST RESPONSE!
There are some things that the British do better than anyone else in the world, things that are synonymous with us and our traditional way of life. In this case I am talking about apples. English apples are the envy of growers across the globe who, despite their best efforts, simply cannot reproduce what we have. Our apples are special in their variety, their flavour and their diversity thanks to hundreds of years of careful cultivation and, of course, the British weather. Yet two thirds of all the apples bought in the UK are imported, some of them transported literally from the other side of the world. One variety, imported Royal Gala, makes up 30% of all the apples sold. The supermarkets demand fruit that is of a uniform size, shape and colour which scuppers a lot of our traditional varieties that come in a glorious array of sizes, shapes and yes colour (it depends on the weather). But there is hope for the future. In recent years there has been a massive rise in the number of apple events held in the autumn to celebrate the fruit. People are rediscovering our heritage just in time and realising that anyone can grow an apple tree of their own. Here in Ryedale we have a rich fruit growing heritage that was almost lost but the Kirkby Fruit Project is hoping to change that. We have found that some of these old orchard trees are still alive and hiding in gardens and fields around the town. Over the winter we will be taking graft wood from these trees and grafting it onto new rootstock to make a ‘living record’ of our heritage. We will also be selling some of 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

10 THINGS you might not know about the

The Handy Mag is a totally independent and a truly local business. Started and published by local people, working in the communities we serve. We are not part of a big corporation or a franchise. We are celebrating 1 year in our office on Market Street in Malton. When I say an office, it’s just a bijou shop with space for 2 ½ desks and not much else! But we love being in the centre of town and able to chat to and get to know our readers, advertisers and those involved in running community groups and events. We believe in building strong communities by supporting both businesses and our local not-for-profit groups and charities. Alongside paid-for display adverts for our local businesses, every month we devote a large section of the magazines to local groups and community events completely free. In 2015 we are celebrating our 10th birthday. From an initial circulation of 2,500 distributed by family to now almost 50,000, we’ve come a long way!

What is The Purple Angel Campaign?
W
ell, the picturesque Ryedale village of Thornton Le Dale knows all about it as it has become the first dementiafriendly village in Britain. The Purple Angel organisation first spread its wings in Torbay, Devon, set up as the Torbay Dementia Action Alliance by founder Norman McNamara in 2012. The aim was to make the seaside town the first dementia-friendly resort in the country. Since then, The Purple Angel campaign has gathered momentum and helps raise awareness of dementia-related illnesses not only in the UK but around the world: globally, an estimated 44 million people have some form of the disease. In Thornton-Le-Dale, 28 participating businesses display the Purple Angle logo. This means staff and employers have read and understood information about dementia, leading to a better understanding of this often stigmatised condition. Kim Pennock, Purple Angel Ambassador said: “By becoming involved in the campaign, Thornton Le Dale is not only aware of this often distressing disease, but it is also helping dispel some of negative aspects that go with it. “Purple Angel believes that people with dementia have the right to live well, engage in and contribute
to their local communities, and have the right to a good quality of life for as long as possible.” Kim has also been instrumental in getting the National Trust on board, with its York attractions delivering a supportive and welcoming service to visitors with dementia, along with their carers. Kim’s own mum has been diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s disease. Following a family visit to National Trust attraction Beningbrough Hall near York, Kim contacted David Morgan, general manager for York area National Trust properties, asking him to support the campaign. Mr Morgan said: “We’re very pleased to support the Purple Angel campaign and help people living with the illness look forward to visiting us. Our staff are very keen to be involved to ensure they were able to communicate in a positive manner to indentify individuals’ needs.” The Purple Angel Campaign has also received Government backing with founder Norman keeping in touch with Prime Minister David Cameron, helping the Government work towards creating awareness and funding more research. The campaign has over 250 global ambassadors who use the logo and encourage their staff to be aware of what dementia means.

COOKING
SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes. Serves 4
METHOD: • If using fresh clams tap each one sharply and discard any which stay open. Scrub the remaining clams. • Add the clams to 2-3 tbsps water in a heavybottomed pan. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. If using fresh clams discard any which have not opened after five minutes. • Remove the clam flesh from the shells (you can leave a few in their shells for garnish) and dip them quickly into their cooking water to rinse off any sand. Strain the juices from the pan through a sieve lined with muslin or a sheet of kitchen paper and reserve the liquid.
Clams are a good buy in January and make a terrific healthy supper with an Italian flavour. INGREDIENTS: • 500g/1lb very small fresh clams, or a small jar of clams in brine • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 tsp anchovy paste (optional) • 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley • 400g/14oz canned chopped tomatoes • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
• Heat the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and fry until it begins to turn pale gold in colour, then add the anchovy paste (if using) and parsley and stir-fry for 30 seconds. • Add the chopped tomatoes and the strained clam juices (if you are using a jar of clams, you can use some or all of the brine from the jar, but be careful it doesn’t make the sauce too salty). Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes. • Cook the spaghetti according to packet instructions and drain. • Just before serving add the clam flesh to the sauce and stir well. • Mix the sauce into the cooked spaghetti. Serve garnished with parsley and any remaining clams in their shells.
• 450g/1lb dried spaghetti

GARDENING
Planning veg for the year ahead
Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues
If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.
JOBS FOR JANUARY:• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew lettuces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns
or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about
concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again.
£110!
SEPTIC TANKS EMPTIED from
Drainage • Plumbing • Pest Control
Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops

>> together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or

some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CDs). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come - as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Flaxton Childrens’ Nursery Develop Forest Area
We aim to give your child the best possible start in life
F
laxton Nursery was opened in 1999 by the current owner Jane Corner, a retired teacher. The nursery is not in a busy urban area or on an industrial estate, but on the grounds of Draft Farm, which was once a working farm. Situated in the picturesque, rural village of Flaxton, on the eastern outskirts of York and approximately a mile from the A64, it is easily accessed from a wide area. A small nursery registered for 30 children, aged from 3 months to 5 years, with both North Yorkshire County Council and OFSTED and therefore have Early Years funding available for 2,3 and 4 year olds. There are eight qualified staff employed, including a EYPS and trained SENDco on site.
The nursery was purposely designed to give children the opportunity to play in and explore, both inside and outside space in a safe and stimulating environment which all fits perfectly with the Forest School ethos.

Jane says, “After being open for several years we have decided to develop our existing large outside area which already has vast open spaces, a woodland and ecology pond, to further develop the children’s physical and environmental learning skills taking the lead from the Forest School ethos.
Nursery manager Jeanette Gray said “It’s a joy to see the children learn about the world around them in such a lovely educational environment”
Our Preschool teacher has experience of Forest school training and the children have visited Howsham Mill for Forest School sessions.” The new area provides exciting new opportunities for the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WILL YOU FINALLY GET A GRIP IN 2015!
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
The UK financial regulator, the FCA, has admitted that one of the biggest shake ups in the UK financial arena - the Retail Distribution Review - has left swathes of individuals without access to advice.
U
K Government Adviser Carol Sergeant says “We have known for a long time that managing your finances effectively leads to increased well being and a better quality of life.” Yet more than half of the UK population is “living on the edge” financially, according to Government’s Money Advice Service (MAS). Apparently, MAS says, that’s because most people are suffering from poor financial skills. MAS’s only objective when it launched in 2010 was to improve people’s understanding and knowledge of financial matters. And by its own admission it seems to have failed. Despite the fact that it’s already spent almost £300 million – ultimately that’s your money.
There are now just 21,496 authorised financial advisers for a country with more than 65 million individuals. The FCA continue to bang on about investment risk without a murmour of inflation risk. Or tax risk. They never tell you that your biggest risk is that your money is not working for you. It’s working for the banks. For the tax man. For the local council. For a Government whose only role is to take money off you and dish it out around themselves. They never tell you your biggest risk is getting to the end of your working life with no dreams realised and nothing to show for your efforts. They’ll never tell you but I will. Stop burying your head in the sand and start getting your money working hard for you. It pays you to take independent advice. Winnie The Pooh Day Let’s hear it for the bear this January There’s a national awareness day for most things, and Winnie the Pooh is one of them! Celebrated on 18th January, it commemorates the birth in 1882 of British author and playwright Alan Alexander Milne, the creator of Pooh and his friends Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. The book Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared in print in 1926 and was followed two years later by The House at Pooh Corner. Though Milne only wrote two Pooh books, his characters have become popular worldwide. The characters are based on toys owned by Milne’s son, who also appears in the books as his namesake Christopher Robin. They were written in Hatfield, East Sussex and locations such as Hundred Acre Wood, Galleon’s Leap and The Enchanted Place are linked with real places in and around nearby Ashdown Forest. The books contain some wonderful lines that are simple and innocent but also wise: “Weeds are flowers, too, until you get to know them.” “If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.” Though there are no official events to mark Winnie the Pooh Day, here are some ideas for your own celebration: create some Winnie the Pooh artwork, dress up as a favourite character or play By Debbie Singh-Bhatti 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

olvo has never had the same appeal as its German executive cousins. It has never looked as aggressive as Audi, nor as brutal as BMW or as mean as MercedesBenz. But that is a good thing. You see, the Swedish marque does things its own way and that’s at the very heart of why motorists opt for Volvo – even though they could, for the same money, afford something a little sexier. Take the S60; it’s very much a thinking man’s car. And that’s not to say that German motors don’t attract intelligent people. It offers some of the most restful, supportive and sumptuous seats on the automotive market. Chairs you can imagine a college professor sinking into before lighting his pipe and mulling over the day’s events. It’s the kind of car he’ll then cruise back home in while listening to Classic FM. Do you see where I’m going here?
an expressive face. The car’s horizontal lines at both the front and rear have been emphasised. Together with details such as a wider grille, daylight running lights and LED tail lamps, they give the S60 a handsome, road-hugging presence. The Volvo saloon has a beauty that appears rooted in the natural world. The clean surfaces and contours give it a very classy feel. Enhancements for the S60 include ‘Sensus’. This is the name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and the all-new Sensus Connected Touch accessory is the latest addition. It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the seven-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter.
The S60 is by no means boring though; it can still satisfy your pleasure sensors. Let’s face it, Scandinavian design is generally pleasing. This is evident in the redesigned interior and exterior of the latest S60.
Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or your mobile phone. It allows you access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, on-line Google Map and Search, weather information, an App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo service locator. It is also possible to share a WiFi network with everyone in the car.
Step inside, and materials, such as wood and leather and the easy-to-use controls, contribute to an ‘in-command’ driving experience. The overall effect is warm and cosy, like being in a Swedish house on a cold night. The car’s colour themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the vehicle.
Volvo is certainly pushing at the technological boundaries now – and that’s including one very important area of motoring: fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the S60 D2 diesel, on test here with a manual gearbox, has been improved to a classleading 72.4 mpg, translating into CO2 emissions of only 103 g/km.
On the outside, the S60’s road presence has been increased by a new front design. The more focused and determined-looking headlamps help create
With environmental credentials like these, any selfrespecting, Volvo driving, college professor will have to put his pipe out now.

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE Fluid pressure within the joint can also increase pain. That’s why both people and dogs experience increased joint stiffness and pain in bad weather. It’s not the cold or wet, but a drop in atmospheric pressure that allows the joint tissues to swell, causing stiffness and discomfort. Arthritis in damaged joints accelerates joint decay, reduces mobility, which in turn leads to muscle wastage. Loss in muscle tone makes the joint become less stable resulting in abnormal forces which create additional wear and tear. If left unchecked, this vicious cycle of pain and joint decay will worsen, dramatically reducing your pet’s mobility. Although arthritis can’t usually be cured, the good news is that we have an expanding range of treatments to help your pets. Food supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate and anti-inflammatory medication should help. Pets that are carrying a few extra pounds tend to struggle far more with stiffness and arthritis than slender ones, as the extra weight puts more strain on diseased joints, so weight loss can really help. Our

“Although arthritis can’t usually be cured, the good news is that we have an expanding range of treatments to help your pets.” nurses run weight loss clinics and can give you lots of advice about helping your pet to lose weight. Exercise regimes can also make a difference: two or three shorter walks every day can be better than one long one. Hydrotherapy, acupuncture and magnetic collars may also be useful in some cases. DOG OF THE MONTH - BENTLEY
Bentley was born on New Year’s Eve so is almost 12 months old. He is understood to be a working cocker spaniel crossed with a terrier so is a very energetic lively young dog. Since coming into our care he has learned several commands and responds well to reward based training. Ideally he is looking for a home without young children where someone is around most of the time as although he is well behaved, when left alone for short periods he is still young and hasn’t had the best start in life. He’s looking for someone with the time, patience and commitment to give him his forever home and he will reward them by being a great companion.
For details about Bentley plus more please visit our website: www.ryedaledogrescue.com or call us on 07581 324153.

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal
MUD FEVER Mud fever is a common condition affecting horses during the winter months. It is characterised by inflamed, crusty and oozing skin at the back of the lower leg of the horse, especially in the heel region. It often affects white legs due to the skin being more sensitive and tends to affect hind limbs more so than forelimbs. Mud Fever mostly occurs in horses that spend some or all of their time living outdoors and occurs when the skin becomes wet and muddy, and therefore more susceptible to invasion by a bacteria called Dermatophilus Congolensis, which thrives in damp conditions, and can be difficult to ward off until environmental conditions change. As with all diseases, prevention is better than cure! Prevention of mud fever can be difficult in winter months when fields are constantly wet and muddy, but you can help to protect your horses heels by applying a waterproof barrier cream to prevent wet penetrating the skin. In horses with feathered limbs, it can be helpful to clip away the hair along the backs of the legs, which will help the skin dry more quickly. It will also help if you wash mud off the legs of your horse each night and then dry them thoroughly. If you notice soreness, oozing or scabs on your horses lower limbs then you should contact your veterinary surgeon, as, if mud fever is diagnosed, antibiotics are often required to help fight off the bacterial infection.

ON GOING TO THE THEATRE I have always been an avid theatre lover, so when the opportunity recently arose to see a play in Paris with school I jumped at the chance. What awaited me in Paris was not at all what I expected. Having being fortunate enough to attend local theatre performances quite frequently (most recently seeing the stage adaption of The Kite Runner at York which managed to move me to tears!) I thought I was familiar with theatre etiquette. Smart clothes, a relaxed atmosphere and, as the beautiful theatres in York rightfully demand, a formal evening. If anything, being in Paris, the most cultured capital in the world, I was expecting a theatre trip to be even more of a classy event. I could not have been more wrong! The smart dress I had packed was replaced by a pair of scruffy jeans and a raincoat as we raced through Paris in the rain (not as romantic as it sounds) with only half an hour to spare. But as we reached the theatre, it became apparent that our casual attire was not out of place. The theatre in Paris, or at least the play we attended, didn’t follow the same conventions of theatre performances in the UK. Casual dress, a theatre that held at capacity only twenty people and rows of uncomfortable wooden benches was a far cry from my experiences at home, even at local venues. Still, I enjoyed myself immensely and would consider my first foreign theatre trip a huge success.

My experience in Paris lead me to think about my experiences with the theatre at home. Living in Malton, the access to amazing theatre pieces is something I often take for granted. From seeing Shakespeare performed at Helmsley’s Walled Garden to attending the Pantomime at the Milton Rooms for as long as I can remember, there is truly something for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in Paris or Yorkshire, dressed in jeans or a dress, the theatre will always be an event. So, if you’re struggling with finding a New Years Resolution this year, consider looking into attending some local theatre performances. It might be a resolution you will stick to! Emily

Inspiring Pro-active, Personalised Self-care During your consultation, a lifestyle questionnaire is completed, and personal goals are identified. Perhaps you would like to reduce bloating; have increased energy; improve nutrition; build muscle power?
E
The consultation will also: • Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) as an overall guideline • Calculate your Basal Metabolic rate (BMR calories required by the body at rest) • Calculate your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR - or calories required by body when active) • Assess the overall results and share information on how we can help you if this is appropriate to your needs. stablished in 2003, Natural Balances Foot & Healthcare inspires pro-active, personalised self-care for their clients.
With a long-term interest in natural health, practitioner Alison Holloway helps to empower people so they can maintain a healthy ‘status quo’ within their body, or as the name implies, keep natural balances. Alison said: “One key goal is to help more people understand that maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important steps towards optimal health.” So during January 2015, Natural Balances are offering health conscious Handy Mag readers a FREE 30-minute Weight Management Consultation to help kick start those New Year resolutions!
Alison’s success with weight management is seen in one of her customer’s testimonials from Pickering:
In 2009, I had a medically documented ‘incurable’ hearing disease and weighed 17 ½ stone. A combination of Indian Head Massage, Healing, a structured exercise and weight management resulted in the ‘disease’ symptoms disappearing and my weight reducing to 12 ½ stone. Regaining my health has meant so much. So phone Natural Balances today on 01751 430806 to book your FREE consultation!

Top Tips from a dental professional
Dentures (Part 2) Dentures what are they? Dentures are a bespoke item manufactured by skilled technicians to the dentists’ by Christine Parker prescription. Whilst they BDS (GDC 72136) are not cheap they are a more cost effective replacement for multiple spaces in the mouth than bridges or implants and give a very natural and pleasing result. DRAWBACKS: Ideally they should be removed after each meal and rinsed to remove food debris They should be removed overnight to allow the supporting tissues to recover, much like you would remove contact lenses or glasses. If not made or cleaned properly they can weaken the remaining teeth causing further tooth loss. They do not have the same chewing force as your natural teeth You may need some time to adjust to them being in your mouth. BENEFITS: Well made dentures can help improve the appearance, depending on which teeth are to be replaced we may be able to alter the shade shape and position of the teeth. They can be used to support the lips and cheeks when the natural teeth are lost and in some cases can really reduce the lines on the lower part of the face. They can be used to take the chewing load off the remaining natural teeth thereby reducing their wear. If your teeth are unstable and you are likely to suffer further tooth loss many dentures can be added to without too much difficulty. If you have a ‘hard bite’ the teeth and supporting plate can be made of high impact acrylic so the denture does not keep breaking. All our dentures are made by skilled local technicians using quality materials to give a natural and durable result. If you would like more information please contact Georgina at

Tel: 01653 228026 Mobile: 07969050422
After the season of excess, it’s time to ‘retune’ your body for the New Year!
A Doctor of Chiropractic for over ten years, Melanie is registered with the General Chiropractic Council.
January is the ideal time to turn over a new leaf and deal with that niggling back pain, stiff shoulder, neck discomfort or similar problems. And the way you can do this is with the help of Melanie Clark at Malton Chiropractic, at The Clinic in Newbiggin, Malton.
Melanie said: “As 2015 begins, it’s a new start for your body. Chiropractic specialises in treatment, management and prevention of problems related to the back and spine. It can reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility.
“January is the ideal time to start afresh, assess your lifestyle and makes some changes,” said Melanie. “Chiropractic treatments are safe, effective, and suitable for all ages and can be tailored to suit individual needs. I believe everyone should be treated with the highest level of chiropractic care, leaving no stone unturned. Pain is there for a reason, and I can help get rid of it for good.”
“A variety of techniques are used, including manipulation, massage and acupuncture. Given the New Year is traditionally a time to revisit your exercise regimen, I can advise on exercise, posture and general lifestyle choices so you maintain your new-found vitality!” So say goodbye to 2014 and farewell to discomfort – contact Melanie for an initial, 60-minute consultation so you can discuss your needs and the treatment that’s best for you.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Amazing firework displays from around the world have become a familiar sight on New Year’s news programmes. Many countries also have traditional forms of celebration dating back hundreds of years. In the UK many people observe first-footing. This is traditionally done by a young, healthy, good looking male with dark hair. He carries gifts which include a piece of coal, money, bread and salt, and should be the first person through the front door after the New Year begins. This is believed to bring good luck. Auld Lang Syne is the familiar tune that many of us sing. This represents remembrance of old friends and times spent with them. Generally credited to Robert Burns, he actually said he was merely noting the words of an ‘old man’s singing.’ He set these words to the tune of a traditional Scottish ditty ‘Can Ye Labour Lea.’ In Denmark traditions involve smashing plates. People throw broken plates on to friends’ doorsteps. This symbolises good wishes for the year ahead. Another tradition involves leaping from chairs on the strike of midnight. In Austria, New Years Eve is called Sylvesterabend which means Eve of Saint Sylvester. Suckling pig and peppermint ice cream are traditional food for New Year celebrations. Tables are often decorated with marzipan pigs, and good luck symbols made out of chocolate or marzipan in shapes such as chimney sweeps, coins, or horseshoes are exchanged. Lead is considered to be auspicious in Germany so at New Year, they pour molten lead into cold water and see what shape develops. It is believed that this predicts the future, so: heart shapes symbolize marriage, round shapes denote good luck, and 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

a ship means a journey. People also leave a bit of every food eaten on New Year’s Eve on their plate until after Midnight, as a way of ensuring a well-stocked larder. Carp is also included, as it is thought to bring wealth. Whereas in Brazil, lentils are seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity and thus are traditionally part of a New Year’s meal. Other customs include priestesses of the local macumba voodoo cult, dressing up in blue and white for a ceremony dedicated to the god of water Yemanja. In addition, a sacrificial boat laden with jewellery, candles and flowers is pushed out from Ipenama beach in a bid to bring health, wealth and happiness. In Greece, 1st January is also St Basil’s Day. He is remembered for his kindness and generosity to the poor. Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake, is one of the special dishes that is prepared and contains a silver or gold coin. Whoever finds the coin will be lucky for the next year. Unique and innovative Photographic Healing Days and Retreats Paul Crick and Vivien McGlashan are keen to help people see how beautiful and unique they are at Gaia Holistix.
during which the client is given full attention and can select from a variety of therapeutic treatments suitable for their needs.
Based in Great Barugh in the heart of the Ryedale countryside, Gaia Holistix offers Gaia-Now Transformational Healing and Personal Development Breakthrough Days.
Vivien said: “By looking at the whole person, we can help heal suffering and pain through transformational healing by looking at unresolved issues and emotional ties. We can transform negative habits and thoughts, and transform habits into self-empowering ones. This can be done in a single day, and can be continued long after the session through teaching skills and techniques.”
In 2014, they introduced innovative photographic healing days and retreats, and offer healing to those ready to embrace change in all aspects of their existence. Paul explained: “New Year is traditionally a time to ‘take stock’, and make a fresh start. “At Gaia Holistix, we can help transform a person so they become empowered to change their life, so they can reach their full potential and fulfil their goals.” Paul and Vivien offer the complete package in their Gaia-Now and Personal Development Sessions,
Healing sessions include their Photographic Healing Days and Retreats. Most of us focus on our faults rather than focusing on our uniqueness, and the photo sessions help tackle this. Paul explained: “By combining our Gaia-Now healing and innovative photographic skills, we can help a client with their personal development.
“The photo sessions are confidential and you receive a beautiful album of ten fully processed 7x5-inch photographic prints so you can be confident in how you look and appear to others.” Vivien said: “The best part of our job is witnessing that ‘light bulb moment’. Someone realises that their life has been running along a certain course through choices made in the past. But this path is not set. You can move in another direction by changing your mindset. “Through our other healing therapies, such as massage and reflexology, people can also overcome their aches and pains. We can even arrange combination sessions, including a mix of hands-on sessions and photographic healing as well.” So for a unique, empowering experience which is entirely confidential, call Gaia Holistix today.

away from the mic! Wonder what Mariah Carey would make of being manhandled like that? Our language even evolved to reflect our love of records. The phrase ‘In the groove’, ‘Groovy’, ‘To groove,’ all relate to the grooves on a 78, LP or single.
IN THE GROOVE Records are enjoying a revival By Louise Addison “Mum this stuff is awesome! You should totally listen to it!” That was my teenage son ‘discovering’ my 80’s vinyl collection and my father’s collection of 78s. Because of course my dad and I know nothing about music while he and his friends are experts. In the age of the strangely invisible digital sound file, I watched his burgeoning love affair with these solid pieces of sound history with some amusement. 78s in particular are very tactile: the thick, heavy shellac, the dust, the stiff card cover. There’s a richness about them which time hasn’t dulled. In the way of teens, Charlie began to google his latest obsession. “Mum, did you know that in the early days they discovered that recording a piano while it was on the floor made it sound too tinny, so they suspended pianos 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
in the air and made the pianist perch on an elevated platform? Cool?” I had to concede that I did not know this!
A surprising number of people deal in vinyl or 78s or both, and most of them are friendly individuals with a wealth of knowledge they are happy to share. Over the coming weeks I also learned that because there was no sound equipment early on, there was no way of modulating the volume of a singer to prevent distortion when recording. To get round this, a someone stood behind the singer reading the score, and when a particularly high note or loud phrase was imminent they pulled the singer
In spite of all the studio shortcomings, collectors of old records swear the sound quality of 78s in particular has never been surpassed. The hiss and scratch caused by the patina and deterioration of old shellac discs appeals to them. As Charlie’s interest deepened, he spent a lot of time in specialist record stores and at collectors’ fairs. A surprising number of people deal in vinyl or 78s or both, and most of them are friendly individuals with a wealth of knowledge they are happy to share. It’s a curious fact that in the age of huge TVs and surroundsound, the sound quality of the music many of us listen to is going backwards, because often we listen through tiny earbuds or mobile phone speakers. It is also curious that many young musicians, steeped in electronics, are rediscovering the joy of playing with sound on vinyl and shellac, in much the same way that the scratch and mix DJs of the seventies, eighties and nineties did. Lots of us must have an old record player stashed in the attic along with our old vinyl LPs. We may even own a few 78s, inherited from our parents. The heyday of CDs lasted a mere 15 years, but there is more than 60 years’ of music recorded on to these older formats. Think about that. Perhaps it’s time to get them out, dust them off, and introduce a new generation to the joy of tangible sound.

A CHANGE IS...?
Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church I like routine, I like to be organised and I don’t like ‘winging it’; although those who work with me would probably disagree! I like the comfort of systems that work. I agree with the old adage, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. I gain a quiet confidence when I can follow familiar patterns and an increased assurance when I feel well prepared. A reoccurring nightmare when I was a musician, and now as a teacher and preacher, was to turn up without my music or my notes!

However, the other side of the coin is we can get stuck in a rut, trapped in a cycle of routine and lose our zest for life to the mundane and tiresome. What is worse is when we feel that we have no choice and our lifestyle has been chosen for us due to being forced to fit our lives around school runs or inflexible working hours or perhaps through illness or disability. Whichever side of the coin we find ourselves, a New Year presents an opportunity to reflect, evaluate and make plans for the future: an opportunity to grab hold of life again. Change can be difficult, but essential, if we are to squeeze every drop of enjoyment out of life. Don’t allow the fear of breaking from the familiar limit the possibilities for 2015. Recently, we changed a venue for a regular event we host at our church. At first, there were many questions and a few grumblers but being in a new venue gave us new surroundings, a new view and forced us to think, speak and act differently. It gave us an opportunity to try something new, to leave behind the familiar and launch into a fresh experience. After a couple of weeks, I was so encouraged by a number of people who felt nervous at first but had found the new venue helpful and refreshing. This year, try something new. Don’t allow the familiar or the comfortable to limit the possibilities. Take a bold step out of your comfort zone, try something, meet someone, taste something or go somewhere different. Life is full of endless big and small possibilities. Unless we are willing to embrace the new we will always live in the past. I believe a change can really be as good as a rest but I also believe it is a key to a fulfilled life. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 67
