W
elcome to the first Handy Mag of 2014; already 1 month in. I hope you’ve had a good start.
For the HandyMags, in getting the first edition to you, the New Year always starts with a flurry of activity and it is after only getting the magazines to print that I feel back to normal. However, this New Year is with a difference for the HandyMag; and we’re quite excited. Having run the magazines from home for many years, alongside the family dogs and being ever-available for the childrens’ return from school, we happened upon an office in Malton that was simply too good to pass over. Next month I’ll be talking to you about the merits of our more business-like situation and the drawbacks of not being able to work in slippers (and that applies to Nicky too!), in no longer mixing work with putting the washing on and having consultations with the dogs (great listeners). In all seriousness it will be good, making us much more accessible to businesses and the community we serve. I’m really excited, though I can see not sharing my lunch with the dogs and the easy supply of cakes and patisserie being a bit of an issue, especially post-Christmas! Drop in and see us at 5a Market Street in Malton. There is free parking in the Market Place for 2 hours and when you’ve visited us, there are lots of lovely independent retailers to visit afterwards. Anyway enough about us. This months’ magazine includes an unprecedented number of articles about our local businesses and the events pages are bursting. Normally February is a quiet month; but this year we all seem to have hit the ground running. A year full of early promise and optimism! Well done to Mr & Mrs Johnson and Mrs Thorpe for winning the November and December competitions. Until next time…

Excellence and Quality from a local multi-trade team
E
xtending or refurbishing your home is an increasingly popular choice with homeowners, and A Plus Property Maintenance has a local and experienced team ready to help. Based in Haxby, owner Andrew Breckons set up his company in 2011 with the aim of giving homeowners and landlords a first class building service and complete maintenance solution for anything from building extensions to new kitchens and bathrooms, general repairs to property renovations. Being an apprentice-trained builder with a CIOB diploma in site management and having had years of experience as a project manager, contract manager and surveyor, Andrew has the perfect combination of skills and knowledge to carry out and oversee all works to the very highest of standards. The A Plus team not only specialise in the more complex projects but also smaller jobs such as plastering, tiling, paving, flooring, decking, doors, boiler replacement, rewires and test certification. It is true testimony to the quality and professional service that Andrew and the team offer which has seen an increasing percentage of their business come from regular clients and referrals. J King from Sutton on the Forest writes “A+ Property Maintenance have just finished a kitchen extension and fitted a new kitchen at my home. The work is of a very high standard and the final result is stunning. The whole project was managed with professionalism and I was always left with a tidy and liveable kitchen at the end of each day. Andrew and George were always courteous and a pleasure to have around. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them to others. They have done a first class job.”
Andrew says “We have worked hard to build up a reputation for quality and reliability. Our attention to detail is what makes the difference. However large or small the job, we like to work with our clients to guide them through the whole process and pride ourselves on our commitment to providing a friendly, efficient and professional service at all times whilst maintaining a first class quality finish. I firmly believe that a happy customer is a regular customer” He added “The past 2 years have been very busy and I am pleased to have lots of happy customers under my tool belt!” If you have a project in mind this year why not call A Plus Property Maintenance. Contact Andrew on 07807 457540 or visit their new website at www. apluspropertymaintenance.co.uk to see their gallery of photos and monthly promotions on kitchen refurbishments.

Build it!
An exciting project to raise £300,000 for a new community hall in Strensall. Throughout 2014 the Church will be running a varied programme of fundraising events to help support the project. The project is run by volunteers and the team would like to hear from anyone who can help by way of offering their time, organising skills or ideas. There are already some ways to get involved over the coming months….

he ‘Build it!’ project is led by Rev. Martin Harrison, the Vicar of St. Mary’s Church in Strensall to raise £300,000 to build a new community hall. The new hall will be built next to the church in the heart of the village. A staggering £75,000 has already been raised by members of the congregation and they have now set themselves a two year target to raise the remaining funds so that work can commence. The present church was built in 1866. It has seen many changes but has always held strong links with the local community. The existing hall is old and in need of repair. Once the new hall has been built the Church will be ideally placed to continue serving the community for many years to come. Build it! Is part of a refurbishment programme which has already seen the inside of the church remodelled and a new car park created. Martin feels that this is both an exciting time for the church and the village and says ‘This is a great opportunity to give to the community which we serve. Once finished, the new hall will be opened to families and organisations who are looking for a facility to meet and to celebrate family occasions. We also hope to encourage new local groups and organisations to use the hall for their group sessions.

ELLA...
ON VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of life partners and love. There are several such days each year to remember that there are people who love us and probably need reminding of that fact with a card that has a poem in it. Sharing the love, isn’t it adorable? The Ancient Greeks had four different words for love. Storge was a love between family members, éros was a romantic love, agápe for a selfless, giving kind of love - all three are recognisably celebrated in our modern calendar. Their final definitive type of love was called philia, meaning the type of love shared between friends, including the idea of loyalty and common interests. This is the only one of the four which appears to be missing from our celebration days, which to me seems more than unfair. To be considered unworthy of its own special day implies that we undervalue the importance of friendship. Why is it that these people, the ones we have specifically selected rather than simply got stuck with, are less deserving of recognition for being such a significant part our lives? Being single is perfectly normal, not giving to charity is sometimes understandable, having no family is unfortunate but can be supplemented by other relationships. However, being friendless is perhaps the saddest thing imaginable. Besides, who is it that we turn to when our other relationships turn sour? In fact, thanks to social media, even the word “friend” has been umbrella-ed out to mean anyone you may or may not have met at a party two weeks ago. Although in reality, philia is arguably one of the most fragile kinds of love - a friendship is not only sinkable, it takes effort to keep it afloat. Nevertheless, I probably wouldn’t rally for the instalment of a “friendship day” to the list of annual events, not merely because it sounds horribly tacky, but it’s not all that surprising to learn that such a thing was already invented by a greetings card company in order to increase sales in August. Instead, perhaps it would be more sensible to simply hand over all of the days that are not reserved for siblings, parents, spouses, crushes, and everyone else, to the celebration and appreciation of our friends, who help us deal with all of the above. Now is a good time because there’s relatively little plant foliage to hide holes, gaps or loose panels in fencing. Remember that the dog is also likely to be able to squeeze underneath or around many types of fence, so you may need to use chicken netting or similar. Don’t forget that gates as well as fences need to be dog-proofed, and never left open for the dog to wander through. If you really have a serious problem that this won’t resolve then you can try a fox deterrent such as ‘Fox-Watch’. Sometimes a few strategically planted dense and prickly shrubs such as pyracantha may help to deter digging paws. Obviously you don’t want to cause the animal actual harm, but something sharp, prickly or simply very dense can act as a good deterrent.

the garden as cocoshell mulches can prove fatal to them. Mulches made of large pebbles or stones also tend to keep them at bay, but smaller diameter gravel or shingle seems to be quite attractive to some cats.
If your cat or a neighbour’s cat is a problem, bear in mind that the more bare soil there is, the more likely that a cat will start to use it as its loo. Ground cover planting is essential and you could always use temporary annual flowers to fill in gaps between longer term planting. If you find that these too are scuffed up shortly after you have planted them, then the best thing to do is cover newly planted areas of bedding with an arch of chicken mesh or with sticks with taut string tied between them. Obviously this will look a mess but can be removed promptly once the plants have rooted well and started to establish. I have found that the electronic cat deterrent ‘Cat-Watch’ works very well too.
Areas of freshly sown seed look very attractive to a cat or dog and again are best protected either by chicken mesh or sticks and string. Remember to keep the string taut at all times, as there’s a slight risk that birds could become entangled in it.
Mulching materials can sometimes cause problems and despite what the label says, many gardeners have told me that they found that the cocoa shell mulches seem to attract cats. Generally speaking soggy mulches like this or anything with a strong smell do tend to deter cats, as they hate digging in moist material. Take extreme care if dogs use

AND TO THE TAXMAN I BEQUEATH…
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
Anyone that’s being paying attention will know I’ve been banging on throughout 2013 about families losing out on their Inheritance. There’s two main threats – (1) the cost of paying for elderly care (if you have more than £23,250 in savings) and (2) “death tax” – payable at 40% on anything you own above a pre-set threshold, currently £325,000. I make no apology for going on about this like a stuck record. If you had to sit in front of families after the death of a parent – which is difficult enough as it is – and tell them that a big chunk of the Estate is headed for the tax man, you’d probably do the same. Often these families can’t believe that their smart and caring parent could let this happen. “Dad would be turning in his grave if he thought all that money was going to the taxman”, they say. “Mum would have wanted us, not the care home, to get her savings”, they say. And often we have to tell them that Mum and Dad were aware of these problems, because we told them. More than once. And we have records of these discussions on file. The reason Mum and Dad don’t do anything about it, even when they’re made aware of it, is either because they think they’re going to spend it (unlikely) or because they think they’re immortal (even more unlikely).
If you’re worried about how much tax you’ll pay on death, the independent consumer association “Which” produces a useful book on Inheritance Tax planning – “The Which? Guide to Inheriting & Giving” and we’ve got copies to give away. To get a FREE copy – ring O330 100 1743 and ask for Helen, or email/send your name, address, email and phone number to helen@pen-life.co.uk, Pen-Life Chartered Financial Planners, Equinox House, Clifton Park, York YO30 5PA, by 1 March 2014, and we’ll send you your FREE copy or visit the website www.givingandinheriting.com.
But the fact is that more than £3 billion pounds is collected every year by the Inland Revenue in death tax. And a good chunk more in paying for elderly care. There are steps you can take to avoid this. And I intend to get as many people as I can to take action in 2014, before it’s too late. So their family, and not the Government, end up with the money they’ve worked all their lives for.

LET YOUR HOME PUT
CASH BACK INTO YOUR POCKET Hundreds of property owners in this region are reaping the benefits of turning to Renewable Energy to power their homes.
P
eak Power Systems, based in Pickering and one of Yorkshire’s leading independent installation specialists, believe the technology has signalled a new era in how we generate electricity, heat our houses, help the environment and save money.
28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a new initiative that provides grants and subsidies for people replacing their old heating systems with more efficient, energy saving alternatives. For many people with older central heating systems, the RHI payments will cover all of your installation and running costs for the life of the scheme.
The Government-backed Feedin Tariff scheme for Solar PV has proved a big incentive for many homeowners, and with the recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive for Heat pump systems, renewable technology is here to stay. SOLAR PV guarantees cheaper electricity for the life of the system, and provides an investment income far greater than the current return on cash savings.
Mark Chappell, founder of Peak Power Systems, said: “We’ve installed hundreds of systems throughout North Yorkshire, many of them for people who

are retired or nearing retirement and want to protect themselves from the ever-rising costs of electricity and heating.
“By investing in modern technologies, you insulate yourself against the ever rising cost of fuel and electricity; and when you set the cost of the installation against the return on your investment, you can expect the system to pay for itself in less than seven years”. He added: “There’s no charge for us to assess the property, carry out a survey and provide a quote. In fact, we recommend all customers go through this exercise to make sure renewable energy is right for them. It’s in our best interests to make sure the customer makes the correct decision
a warehouse or farm buildings, but our main aim is to keep the cost to the customer as low as possible.
Mark and his partner, Debbie, launched Peak Power Systems on the strength of their long-held interest in renewable energy, coupled with Mark’s background in electrical engineering. The company is accredited with the MCS (Micro-generation Certificate Scheme), which requires an annual inspection of its work as well as the standard of customer service. One of the company’s biggest projects so far has been the installation of a large solar PV system at a caravan park in Wrelton. Mark said: “We’re small enough to provide a very good one-to-one service to our customers but at the same time big enough to tackle just about any project, whether it is for a home, an office complex,
“Most of our work is in and around Pickering and the wider North Yorkshire region, although we have completed projects as far away as Scotland, and as a company working mostly with local people our aim is to provide a first class job at realistic prices and with no hidden bills at the end of it”. For more information on Peak Power Systems and what we can do for you, or if you would like more information on how Solar PV and Heat Pumps systems work, please contact Mark or Debbie on 01751 476989 or visit www. peakpowersystems.co.uk.

KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen

is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us,
because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 23 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and

enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result.
Top Tips from a dental professional
Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.
Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want.
The Instyle Team.
Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week... “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

1. Use disclosing tablets to stain plaque on your teeth, this allows you to see where you need to brush more. Remember wear your specs and use a good light to see clearly. 2. Use a compact head toothbrush to allow easy access to all areas of the mouth. The small round heads on electric brushes are ideal for getting behind the teeth. All heads and toothbrushes should be changed every 3 months. 3. If your gums bleed keep brushing, they need more , not less, attention in that area. 4. Use interdental cleaning aids every day. Floss if you are dextrous or interdental brushes or sticks if not. Your dentist will be able to suggest the best size and type for your mouth. Avoid metal or wooden sticks these can damage the gums. 5. Mouthwashes can help but only plaque and tartar removal can keep gum disease at bay. 6. Not all people get bleeding gums as a sign they have gum disease, especially smokers, if you can stop smoking, your gums will be better for it. For a thorough gum assessment and personalised preventative advice call Georgina at HDP and take control of your oral health.

or when family are away. They offer a dedicated place to ring for one off needs. There are also occasional trips to the coast, garden centre, theatre or other places of interest if you are unable to get out or don’t have friends or family to take you.
NEIGHBOURS
…for that little bit of extra help As people get older, or perhaps during temporary illness or injury, some jobs around the home become almost impossible. For example, changing a light bulb, taking curtains down to clean and putting back. Sometimes it can be hard to get out, to have a change of scenery or even to do some urgent shopping. Belfrey Neighbours has been set up by St Michael le Belfrey church and operates under their charitable status. The organisation offers help to anyone age 65+ who pays their Council Tax to the City of York and has a short term or one-off need. The aim is to bridge the gap in existing services, not to duplicate those already available, so if your request can be better dealt with by another service in the community they will let you know. The service is free and offers help such as a regular phone call to ask how you are – some people may request this during times of illness or bad weather
If you, or someone you know, would benefit from the help of Belfrey Neighbours, do ring and ask as they are there to help. Please call 01904 891627 for more information. And of course, Belfrey Neighbours also needs people to get involved and join their team. Volunteers are men and women of all ages (18+) who have some time to help their ‘neighbours’ with one off jobs or in the office making and receiving calls. All volunteers sign up to a Code of Practice, provide two references and have a police check before visiting anyone. If you are interested in becoming a Belfrey Neighbour please contact 01904 891627 for more details.

Has your pet piled on the pounds over Christmas? By Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic
D
id you know that feeding your 10kg dog 1oz of cheese is the equivalent of you eating 1½ burgers? Or that feeding your 4.5kg cat a saucer of milk is the equivalent of you eating 4 burgers? Obesity is a increasing problem in our pets, with many owners unaware of what a ‘normal’ weight is for their animal. An animal with an ideal body condition should have a tucked in waistline when viewed from above, and you should be able to feel their ribs when running your hands over their chest - a sagging tummy or loss of an obvious waist indicates obesity. An overweight pet is at a higher risk from diabetes, heart disease and increased blood pressure, respiratory problems and pain from arthritic joints. Weight gain can also make it difficult for them to groom properly, and this can lead to skin problems and general discomfort. Ultimately, obesity in your pet can cause a shortened lifespan.
When you make the decision to put your pet on a diet it is important to aim for gradual weight loss. A good place to start is to check that you are feeding the right amount of food. As well as watching what your pet eats, you can also help encourage weight loss and maintain a healthy lifestyle by increasing your pet’s exercise levels. The nurses at Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic are running weight clinics throughout January & February, so if you have any questions about weight loss, or would like your pet to join our weight control programme please ring us at your local branch for information.

he PR disaster which stopped numerous parents from vaccinating their children for MMR has led to a huge increase in these diseases. For vaccination to work for everyone 70% of the population must be covered. This is called “herd health” in veterinary terms. We as a profession have a similar failing in the uptake of horse influenza vaccines, such that now only about 40% of the population of horses and ponies are protected. Horse flu is a very contagious disease, that spreads like wildfire through an unprotected group. In Australia, 2007, infection caused huge problems and catastrophe for equine events as the horses were not vaccinated. The saying “Influenza doesn’t

Last year there were 12 outbreaks which were controlled by early recognition and movement bans. But the fear is that now the vaccination level has tailed off with people becoming complacent about flu or struggling to afford it in these difficult times, we may have a disaster soon and an epidemic. Which would halt all horse movement, all shows, competing, racing and pleasure riding. Many practices including Station House Vets are offering their clients a chance to re-start their vaccines for a greatly discounted price during March 2014 in an attempt to lift the protection to 70%. HAPPY NEW YEAR...
TO CAT LOVERS EVERYWHERE! As usual last year was a busy year for York Cats Protection Adoption Centre. A big thank you to all of our supporters, whether you have adopted a cat, donated some money or dropped off a tin of cat food you have helped us to improve the life of many cats. Not only did we find new homes for 360 cats but we also helped to neuter hundreds of cats across our region - cats that no doubt would have created hundreds more unwanted moggies if they had been left unneutered. Please remember that getting your cat neutered is one of the most important things you can do to keep it healthy. Cats Protection can help those cat owners on low incomes with the cost of this simple procedure, so please contact us if you need financial help to neuter your cat. The start of 2014 has seen a surge of homing activity and we are saying goodbye to many of our furry friends…and then saying hello to a whole load of new arrivals. Despite this we still have a few cats in the Centre who have been with us for a little longer and it’s these cats we are keenest to find new homes for.
One such cat is fun and friendly Zena. Poor Zena hadn’t been neutered before she came our way so she kept on having litters and litters of kittens – she’s had so many kittens to look after in the past that she’s now more than ready to settle down and to be the cat that is the centre of attention for a change. As you can see she loves to chatter away to anyone who will listen to her feline nonsense! Zena is a friendly gal with us humans, but isn’t really too keen on other cats. She would make the ideal family pet so why not pop along to the Centre and ask to meet her? York Cats Protection Adoption Centre at 582 Huntington Road is open every day between 11am & 3pm. If you would like to adopt any of our cats please contact us on 01904 760356 or email york@cats.org.uk. All our cats have been vet checked, microchipped, started on a course of vaccinations, been neutered (if old enough), have been treated for fleas and worms and also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. Visit www.york.cats.org.uk to see the other cats in our care. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 41
COOKING TRAVEL

Sausages and Puy Lentils Makes 4. Ready in 40 minutes
TIP Try your local butcher or deli or visit a farmers’ market to find the best quality Continental-style sausages. If you can’t find Toulouse sausages, Lincolnshire, Cumberland or pork and leek varieties will work just as well. Place the lentils in a pan and cover with water. 1. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
2. If you fancy a change from the usual sausage and mash why not go Continental? Tasty Toulouse sausages wrapped in pancetta and served on a bed of flavoursome puy lentils make the perfect mid-week meal.
INGREDIENTS Ingredients: • 225g puy lentils • 225g shallots, peeled and halved • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp brown sugar • 150ml vegetable stock • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 8 Toulouse or chunky pork sausages • 8 rashers pancetta or smoked streaky bacon, stretched with the back of a knife • 2 tsp clear honey • 3 tbsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan and fry the shallots for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until just starting to soften. Sprinkle over the brown sugar and cook for a further 8-10 minutes until the shallots are golden and caramelised.
Drain the lentils and add to the frying pan with 3. the stock, vinegar and 2 tsp of the mustard. Simmer for about 15 minutes until the lentils are just tender. Stir occasionally and add a little more stock, if necessary.
While the lentils are cooking, wrap each 4. sausage with a pancetta rasher. Cook under
a medium-hot grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently until the sausages are almost cooked through. Mix together the rest of the mustard with the honey and brush over the sausages. Cook for a further 3-4 minutes until the pancetta is crisp and browned.
half the parsley into the lentils and season 5. toStirtaste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the lentils and sausages on warmed plates garnished with the remaining parsley.

MOTORING
Kia Ray EV
By James Baggott, MD of BlackballMedia.co.uk
THE KNOWLEDGE Kia is entering the electric vehicle market in 2014 with an EV version of its Soul mini SUV.
W
e headed to South Korea to try that car’s forerunner, the Ray EV, which is leading the charge for the brand’s electric future. We took it for a spin around the heaving city to see what we could learn about the Soul that will use an enhanced version of its tech.
WHAT IS IT?
situated in the more traditional location under the bonnet. We won’t concentrate too much on what the Ray features, as much of this has been enhanced for the Soul. The Soul EV has a range of 125 miles, can be fully charged in five hours or topped up in just 25 minutes with a fast charger. Top speed is 90mph and it will hit 60mph in around 14 seconds.
Let’s clear this up from the start – the Ray is not, and will never be, available in the UK. But this car is pioneering the technology that will appear in the Soul EV in the UK in the winter of 2014. The Ray is a micro city car for the Korean market where some 67,000 have been sold. The EV version, though, is only available on a pilot car sharing scheme in Seoul where 180 of the tiny cars are available to 15,000 members for as little as £3 an hour. Kia has been using the scheme to gain data on its EV models that it has used to refine the mass production Soul version.
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE?
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET?
ANY RIVALS?
What’s more important is what’s under the seats. Hidden in the floor pan is a battery pack that’s coupled to an electric motor 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
That’s unclear at this point, but what we do know is that when the Soul EV arrives it will be the most expensive model in the range. That will mean it’s likely to have Kia’s top spec with a clever sat nav system that will point out recharging locations and range, just like our Ray EV test car did. Kia did tell us the Soul will come with heated and cooling front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Slightly different bumpers and headlamps, and a charge point in the grille, will mark out the EV model from the rest of the Soul range.
BMW are the latest entrants to this market with the i3, but electric car buyers can also choose from more established
Model: Kia Ray EV Price: N/A (car share scheme only) Engine: 50kw electric motor Power: 68bhp, 167Nm Max speed: 90mph 0-60mph: 15.9s Range: 125 miles Emissions: 0g/km
offerings from Nissan like the Leaf, or Renault’s Zoe. If you’re looking for something even more outrageous, then you could consider a Renault Twizy. What’s it like to drive? On clogged streets in South Korea’s capital, we found the brisk, smooth acceleration of the battery powered model a boon. The silent running makes for a relaxing drive and the added weight from the batteries was hard to spot. Regenerative braking was also impressive, if a little aggressive at slamming on the anchors at times.
THE VERDICT
We’re impressed with Kia’s first entry into the EV market. There’s currently no word on pricing for the Soul or whether buyers will be offered the car complete with batteries to buy outright, like Nissan, or rented the batteries and sold the car, like Renault. What was clear from our test drive, though, is that Kia has EV technology pretty much nailed and it’s ready to go. Fact in the likelihood the manufacturer’s competitive pricing will be brought into the equation, the Soul EV could be the shake up the segment needs.

BOOKS Boffin Brainchild Jill Jennings
Review by Jack Whalen, age 8. This book kept my attention from start to finish. Boffin, the robot, is a funny character and easily gets bored. All he wants to do is live the life of a real boy so when Tom comes along he sees his chance. I loved the adventures that Tom and Boffin had together. Boffin often got the meanings of words mixed up which ended in him doing funny and silly things. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my friends. Review by Jack’s mum, Nicky This is the story of the world’s first free-thinking robot, Boffin Brainchild. He has been scientifically programmed to learn as a human child does by watching, listening and copying those around him. Boffin is very clever – and very bored. Standing on show in a science museum is not his idea of fun and he longs to be a real boy. Tom is on a school trip to the museum to see Boffin Brainchild. He has waited weeks for the day to arrive and is fascinated by the revolutionary robot. When he has to leave to catch the school bus with the rest of his class, free-thinking Boffin decides to leave his platform and go with him. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Tom is horrified and tries to lose the robot, but despite his best efforts, Boffin manages to escape and ends up on the school bus! Scared of being accused of stealing the robot, Tom feels his only option is to disguise Boffin as a real boy. How long can Tom and Boffin keep up the pretence to his parents, friends and the teachers at school? What will happen if they get found out? Humorous, interesting and with drama this book is perfect for children from the age of 8 upwards. The story of friendship and adventure is hugely entertaining and with some valuable lessons for life thrown in, you will find it hard to put this book down.
The Guts
Roddy Doyle Review by Kath Bennett To be honest, it is a shock to find out that Jimmy Rabbitte is middle aged with teenage children. It shouldn’t be - after all, The Commitments was over twenty years ago - but it is. It seems to be a bit of a shock to Jimmy too - and the shock is compounded when he discovers that he has cancer.... The Commitments may be
better known as a film (and now as a stage musical), but it was a book first: the first of Doyle’s Barrytown trilogy, which followed the fortunes of the Rabbitte family in Dublin. Here, Doyle revisits the family many years on. Ireland is in the grip of the recession, and Jimmy and his wife are feeling the pinch. He is still in the music business, although rather than discovering new talent, he spends his days digging into the past for old punk bands who still have a following. And he has cancer. At the age of forty seven he has to face the fact that he could die. Doyle’s style is not for everyone, and his language is not for the faint hearted, but the dialogue still sails off the page as authentically as it ever did, and much of the story is carried through speech. There are a series of well-executed set pieces too, including the finale which brings together Jimmy, his long-lost brother Les, an old punk and a former bandmate (and fellow cancer sufferer), to witness Jimmy’s eldest son triumph in front of a festival crowd. OK, he is pretending to be Bulgarian and singing a song which is pretending to be 1930s Irish Blues, but who cares? If you have read the Barrytown trilogy, this is like meeting a bunch of old friends in the pub. If you haven’t, then read it anyway. Odds are you will go back to the original books to meet the characters as they were in the beginning.

It will feel like a proper room with a better temperature throughout the year so you can actually use it, and enjoy being in there. With the Inceil System you can: • SAVE up to 80% heat loss in the winter • create a COOLER room in the summer • reduce FADING on furniture from excessive sunlight • REDUCE that annoying rain noise • AND save money on heating bills

“The new ceiling looks really smart, the conservatory remains bright and airy, and we have gained a room which we can now use all year round instead of just for a few weeks in the summer, and all at a very reasonable cost. The work was completed in the space of two days and was carried out by fitters who could not be faulted for their efficiency, care and courtesy.” Sheila and Albert, York
HONESTLY, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this years ago. “Our conservatory is unbelievably improved and during the recent hot spell my husband even managed to watch the Wimbledon final in there! We would certainly recommend Inceil as it makes such a difference.” Lynne, Strensall www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 49

MALTON’S MONTHLY FOOD MARKETS 2014 DATES ARE ANNOUNCED!
T
his popular foodie event will hold its first market of 2014 on Saturday 8th March when Masterchef finalist Sara Danesin Medio from York will be the guest chef. The Market will then follow the regular format of operating every second Saturday throughout the year, from March through to December, from 9am to 3pm at the Milton Rooms – with the exception of May when organisers will be busy with arrangements for the annual Food Festival. Each month there is a range of top quality food and drink from award-winning local producers together with a top local or national chef offering free cookery demonstrations. The Monthly Food Market – a spin-off from the annual Food Lovers Festival (May 24th and 25th, 2014) – has proved increasingly popular throughout 2013 with a record number of stallholders attending in December. With free parking, free entry and free chef demonstrations, it is a must-visit event for anyone interested in learning new culinary skills and tasting the best of the best in local food and drink. The future dates are 12th April, 14th June, 12th July, 9th August, 13th September, 11th October, 8th November and 13th December. Markets organiser Tom Naylor-Leyland said: “We are delighted that Sara will be in our cookery theatre on March 8th. “Sara’s love of creating stylish, delicious food is captivating and we will be able to see first-hand how she injects that passion into every dish. Getting to the final of Masterchef is an incredible feat and Sara’s career as a cook is going from strength to strength. We already know that she buys her ingredients from some of our Market’s award-winning producers – so not only can visitors to the Market see a top-class cookery demonstration, they can also purchase the best of ingredients right here in Malton.” The 2014 Markets will again feature free tea or coffee for everyone who makes a purchase at the Market, with donations going towards the Malton CIC, the not-for-profit organisation that operates the monthly Markets and annual Food Lovers Festival.

The CIC – a community interest company – is actively seeking more people to join the volunteering team that runs the Markets and Festival. Tom said: “Our volunteers are wonderful, helping with anything from setting up stalls, guiding people to parking spaces or serving coffee. We would love to hear from anyone interested in joining in. Becoming a Festival or Markets volunteer is a very fulfilling experience as the community spirit really ‘shines’ through.” Further information can be found on www.maltonyorkshire.co.uk

SHORT STORY THE SECRET ADMIRER by Jackie Brewster
“Someone has a secret admirer.” The delivery man winked as he handed Adeline Coles a huge bouquet of flowers. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Love.” Her nosey neighbours, the Peggs, had also opened their front door, and she distinctly heard Mr Pegg whisper to his wife, “Bet she’s sent them to herself.” Embarrassed, Adeline hurried inside. The flowers were beautiful, lots of lilies which weren’t her cup of tea, but expertly arranged. They were probably from her niece, but you never know, thought Adeline, they might be from Mr Wellbrook. He occasionally offered her a lift in his Jaguar when he saw her struggling with groceries. She could always dream.
The shop was empty, yet Brian performed a theatrical glance to check the coast was clear. “Go ahead,” he said. Heeding the words of Mr Pegg, Adeline asked, “Did I send them to myself in a senior moment?” Brian laughed, “I can reassure you that you didn’t.” “Remember to nod or shake, Brian,” Adeline smiled. “Was it my niece?” Brian slowly and deliberately shook his head. Adeline felt a glow of relief. She adored her niece, but would much rather have a proper secret admirer. She decided to go for broke.
Adeline sighed, put on her reading glasses, and read the little card which accompanied the flowers. It said, ‘From a Secret Admirer’.
“Was it Mr Wellbrook?” “That chap who flashes about in his Jag?” Brian frowned. “Certainly not.”
Adeline gasped. The delivery man was right, she did have a secret admirer. But who could it be? There was only one florist in town, Blossom’s, run rather fittingly by Brian and Daisy Blossom. She’d ordered flowers from them for her niece’s wedding. She would walk into town, and ask them who’d sent the flowers. The mystery would be solved. On her way she kept her eyes peeled for the Jag, but her potential secret admirer was keeping a low profile. Once at Blossom’s she was perturbed to find Brian stood at the counter. She was fond of Brian, but she would have rather discussed the matter with his wife, woman to woman.
Adeline was stumped, and a little disappointed. “Could you give me a clue?”
“Good morning Miss Coles, lovely to see you,” Brian smiled as she entered. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Brian leaned in closer, “How would you feel if I said your secret admirer is in this shop right now?” Adeline looked around her. “But there’s nobody here.” And then she realised, “Mr Blossom!” She declared, “How would your wife feel?” Brian looked shocked, “I don’t have a wife.” “Have you told that to Daisy?” Adeline arched her eyebrow.
“Ahh.” Brian looked uncomfortable. “I’m afraid we have a policy of client confidentiality.” Adeline blushed.
“Daisy’s not my wife, she’s my sister,” Brian said crossly. “Why does everyone think that?” Oh dear, thought Adeline, I’ve only just got a secret admirer and we’re already having our first row. “In that case,” she said, “I apologise, and thank you for the flowers”. Flattered and embarrassed, Adeline decided now was a good time to leave. As she opened the door, Brian called, “Would you be amenable to receiving Valentine flowers from me again?”
“I don’t want to get you into trouble. Perhaps if I suggested a few names you could nod or shake your head?”
She paused, then threw a look over her shoulder which she hoped was smouldering, “Possibly. Though less of the lilies, I’m a roses kind of girl”.
“It’s a delicate matter.” Adeline placed the little card on the counter. “I’d like to know who sent me these?”

THE LIFE LIST LESSONS LEARNED
I
n times gone by, cars had individual character and not that ‘designed in a wind tunnel’ look so beloved of modern vehicle design. And, while motoring TV programmes and magazines like to praise the classics, let’s not forget the joys of the old family car. True, they may not have had hi-tech gadgetry, or heat, or bodywork that could withstand anything over 65mph for more than a few minutes at a time, but they were classics in their own way. However, remember that objects in the rear-view mirror may sometimes appear rosier than they were in real life.
Let’s not forget...
1. That lingering smell of petrol (although at least you could afford it). 2. Cold starts - if you were lucky - on a full choke. It was like a smoker’s cough on four wheels. 3. Your legs sticking to the vinyl seats in summer because you were wearing shorts, followed by that unmistakeable ripping sound when you freed your skin. 4. Window handles that would tax Charles Atlas. 5. The faint smell of dog, even if you didn’t have one.
6. A seemingly endless supply of barley sugars or cough candy from the glove compartment, often fluff-free. 7. Adjustable wing-mirrors, if you stretched your arm out the window. 8. A car horn you could barely hear yourself, something like a congested duck who didn’t want to create a fuss. 9. A canopy coolant system, otherwise known as a leak in the roof. 10. “Are we there yet?” © Derek Thompson
