W
elcome to our January edition.
When you receive this magazine Christmas will have been and gone, warm summer holidays seem like a lifetime away and we’re all feeling the effects of too much festive indulgence. Never fear, your Handy Mag is full of new things to do, places to go and people who can help you make a fresh start in 2015. Whilst writing I’m still trying to get ready for Christmas and looking forward to taking a break. I always forget how exhausting this time of year is. I hope you’ve managed some down time over the Christmas period. We’ve had a great 2014 here at the Handy Mag and have really enjoyed playing our part in promoting local businesses, services and community groups and charities. We’ve enjoyed meeting lots of lovely local people in the office and look forward to supporting our local area into 2015. January is such a miserable month weatherwise and a trip to Conexo Travel in Haxby (p29) or a call to Wold Travel, who provide coach holidays, could give you something to look forward to later in the year. Wold Travel coaches can even pick you up from your door. How great not to have to worry about airport transfers! Our next deadline is Tuesday 6th January – always a challenge right after New Year! If you have any events or would like to promote your business in this edition, pleases let us know as soon as possible. Don’t forget to keep in touch on Twitter @ Handymag, Facebook, by email to marianne@ thehandymag.co.uk or visit our website at www. thehandymag.co.uk for up to date listings of events and all of our advertisers. Congratulations to Sandra Garnett from Wigginton for winning the November competition and thank you to everyone who sends in entries.

The Handy Mag is a totally independent and a truly local business. Started and published by local people, working in the communities we serve. We are not part of a big corporation or a franchise. We are celebrating 1 year in our office on Market Street in Malton. When I say an office, it’s just a bijou shop with space for 2 ½ desks and not much else! But we love being in the centre of town and able to chat to and get to know our readers, advertisers and those involved in running community groups and events. We believe in building strong communities by supporting both businesses and our local not-for-profit groups and charities. Alongside paid-for display adverts for our local businesses, every month we devote a large section of the magazines to local groups and community events completely free. In 2015 we are celebrating our 10th birthday. From an initial circulation of 2,500 distributed by family to now almost 50,000, we’ve come a long way!

There is no big team behind the Handy Mags. We are a team of 3 core staff, plus support from freelance design, copywriting and sales experts: Marianne (owner and editor), Nicky (community liaison and PA) and Imogen (part time and super organised) as core staff, alongside Phil (design), Faith (copywriting) and Terry (sales). We share an enthusiasm for making sure every business or community group, regardless of size, gets their message out to their local area. The Handy Mags have a combined circulation of 49,200 letterboxes. Our Ryedale edition is delivered through every letterbox in Malton, Norton, Helmsley, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and all surrounding villages including all outlying farms. Our York Villages edition is distributed around the north side of York ring road including Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall, Huntington, Earswick, New Earswick, Nether and Upper Poppleton, Dunnington,

Murton and Stockton on the Forest. The magazines are delivered via Royal Mail Our local posties do a fantastic job of carrying our chunky monthly Handy Mags out to every letterbox in our distribution areas. We have a large(ish) window where we display posters for local events Feel free to drop your local event poster in and we will do our best to not only display it in our shop window but also put it in the magazine. We design all sorts of leaflets, posters, business cards and stationery For businesses and community groups in the area, so if you need something designed please get in touch. We pride ourselves on a personal touch. We know what it’s like being a small local business as we are one ourselves!

Clean Slates, Fresh Starts and Tricky Resolutions
S
by Jen Grimble
omehow 2014 has flown away as we welcome 2015 and that familiar January air. As always with a New Year, we are granted clean slates, fresh starts and new attempts at those tricky Resolutions. So it seems appropriate that York has undergone some premature changes of its own.
Since the Thursday Market of 16th Century St Sampson’s Square, York has always had a strong trade presence, but Newgate Market has played the most dominant role in local life since the Middle Ages. So, when the City of York Council announced refurbishment plans for our historic shopping quarter, our breaths’ were left baited. One year ago the Council held its first meeting to establish a design plan that suited the majority. Results of this initial get-together indicated a desire for a new market roof and better footpaths between stalls. So, has the refurbishment met our needs? Well, the £1.6million re-development is not entirely complete, but the market certainly looks more youthful, after a paving overhaul and new metal stalls. Newgate has been renamed ‘Shambles Market’ and is now a vibrant space with neatly arranged units. The new roof is still in progress, but the footpaths that connect all sides of the market make access much simpler, and safer. The market is now the perfect blend of traditional and modern, with over 80 stalls offering local photographs, vintage clothing, fruit and veg and a butchery. With future plans to modernise Jubbergate, it seems our lovely market may just be the perfect place to grab a January bargain. With a new shopping square at our disposal and plenty of exciting festivals just around the corner, 2015 promises to be an excited time for local trade. So get out there and see what the council has given us, because York has detoxed and is looking better than ever! 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

EMILY...
ON GOING TO THE THEATRE I have always been an avid theatre lover, so when the opportunity recently arose to see a play in Paris with school I jumped at the chance. What awaited me in Paris was not at all what I expected. Having being fortunate enough to attend local theatre performances quite frequently (most recently seeing the stage adaption of The Kite Runner at York which managed to move me to tears!) I thought I was familiar with theatre etiquette. Smart clothes, a relaxed atmosphere and, as the beautiful theatres in York rightfully demand, a formal evening. If anything, being in Paris, the most cultured capital in the world, I was expecting a theatre trip to be even more of a classy event. I could not have been more wrong! The smart dress I had packed was replaced by a pair of scruffy jeans and a raincoat as we raced through Paris in the rain (not as romantic as it sounds) with only half an hour to spare. But as we reached the theatre, it became apparent that our casual attire was not out of place. The theatre in Paris, or at least the play we attended, didn’t follow the same conventions of theatre performances in the UK. Casual dress, a theatre that held at capacity only twenty people and rows of uncomfortable wooden benches was a far cry from my experiences at home, even at local venues. Still, I enjoyed myself immensely and would consider my first foreign theatre trip a huge success. My experience in Paris lead me to think about my experiences with the theatre at home. Living in Malton, the access to amazing theatre pieces is something I often take for granted. From seeing Shakespeare performed at Helmsley’s Walled Garden to attending the Pantomime at the Milton Rooms for as long as I can remember, there is truly something for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in Paris or Yorkshire, dressed in jeans or a dress, the theatre will always be an event. So, if you’re struggling with finding a New Years Resolution this year, consider looking into attending some local theatre performances. It might be a resolution you will stick to! Emily

TRAVEL
By Solange Hando
Greece - Thessalonika great fire of 1917. Meanwhile, high on the slopes, the old town beckons with steep cobbled lanes, brightly-painted Ottoman houses with closed balconies and the sturdy remains of the Byzantine wall draped in crenellations, turrets and gates. Up there, you enjoy a true bird’s eye view of Thessaloniki and by clear weather, you might even see Mount Olympus across the bay.
C
apital of Greek Macedonia, second only to Athens, this pleasant city by the sea was founded in 315 BC by Cassander who named it after his wife, half-sister of Alexander the Great. Alexander didn’t live long enough to see the new city but among shields and battle scenes, his imposing statue holds pride of place on the waterfront, flying cape, dagger drawn and horse raring to go. Yet the city’s most beloved icon is the nearby ‘White Tower’, a symbol of Greek sovereignty since the 1912 Balkan War and an obligatory stop for visitors, touring on the road train or horsedrawn carriages. Rebuilt under Ottoman rule to strengthen the harbour, long known as the bloody tower, it was painted white, they say, by a prisoner in exchange for his freedom. Today, the tower has turned honey-coloured and there are no prisoners inside, only a museum relating the city’s history and if you climb up the spiral ramp to the top, a superb 360° panorama. First there’s the great sweep of the bay from the bustling commercial harbour to fine sandy beaches, the promenade lined with elegant buildings and pavement cafés, the cyclists enjoying the sea breeze, the fishermen and now and then, a galleon preparing to sail with its small cargo of wide-eyed tourists. On the land side, the city spreads towards the mountains in the distance, straight boulevards, parklands, orange trees, modern sculptures and here and there, a touch of Art Nouveau or Deco for much of Thessaloniki was rebuilt after the

But the city wall is only one of fifteen UNESCO sites in Thessaloniki, a town amazingly rich in early Christian and Byzantine monuments. Among them are the Rotunda, St David’s church and the basilica of St Demetrius, the city’s patron saint, all claiming precious mosaics. Converted into mosques at times, destroyed, rebuilt, the churches still showcase the development of religious art and architecture from the 4th to the 15th century. St Paul is said to have visited the area around AD 50, thus making Thessaloniki one of the first bases for the spread of Christianity. From the Archaeological Museum to vestiges of the Roman arch and palace in the town centre, Thessaloniki is justly proud of its heritage but with its vibrant university and enviable title of European Capital of Youth 2014, it fully embraces the 21st century. Disused warehouses have become restaurants, cinema and photography have their own museums and the International Film Festival draws crowds from afar. Yet, life feels relaxed, lunch al fresco in a shaded lane, mobile stalls selling ice cream or sesame rings, couples strolling in the park or on the waterfront, church bells chiming in the midday sun. At the weekend, city folks head for the nearby lakes to enjoy the water, ramble along the trails or gaze in wonder at great flocks of migrating birds. Alexander the Great would approve and no doubt Cassander would do likewise.

THE LAND DOWN UNDER When it’s cold and frosty outside, there’s no better time to get reacquainted with our antipodean friends as they celebrate Australia Day on January the 26th. It’s a ripper opportunity to throw a few shrimp on the barbie, and while you’re cooking up a storm on the beach, you can sit back and read some bonza books about the land Down Under.
A Town like Alice, Nevil Shute
For many, Nevil Shute’s novel is the first they read that really gives them a drive to travel to Australia. It’s a compelling tale of love and war which sees Englishwoman Jean Paget captured by the Japanese in the heart of the Malaysian jungle and then forced to endure a death march lasting many months. From Malaysia, Jean returns home, but not for long as she then returns to the Far East to give something back to those who helped save her life. Where she ends up is in a remote part of Oz which challenges her resolve once again. She may not be a bona fide ‘Sheila’, but given what she’s been through, Jean’s got the resilience of a real Aussie battler.
Everybody Jam, Ali Lewis
This is the story of Danny, who lives on a remote cattle station in the outback, and his brother who has died, his teenage sister who’s pregnant and the rather green English backpacker who’s the latest hired help. Everybody Jam refers to strawberry jam, that’s universally loved by one and all, no matter what their background or status. In Danny’s world, everyone’s gearing up for the great annual muster and it’s a make or break business, with the family pushed to its limits and fighting to survive under the intense heat of the blazing sun. It was written for young adults but if you’ve ever been a gap year student, or you fancy a true Aussie experience, then Everybody Jam could give you a real flavour of what to expect.
Eucalyptus, Murray Bail
Murray Bail has written an unusual and touching love story which has grown straight from the craggy Aussie soil itself. Widower Holland has two things he is proud of: his daughter Ellen, and his impressive collection of eucalyptus trees. He has grown every single variety of the gums and it’s the inspiration for a challenge to any of Ellen’s suitors. Holland decrees that Ellen may only marry the man who can correctly identify all of them. While many come by to try and subsequently fail, Ellen spends her days being entertained by a stranger who appears under the 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
shadow of a tree one day. Enchanted and intrigued by his stories of distant lands, Ellen begins to fall in love. It’s a beautiful story that will capture your heart and nurture a longing for romance and travel.
Mutant Message Down Under,
Marlo Morgan For many, the idea of ‘going walkabout’ with an aboriginal tribe would be like having a dream come true; to be permitted such a rare insight into an ancient civilisation. This is the fictional account of an American woman ‘summoned’ to do just that. Often referred to as a ‘spiritual odyssey’, the book explores the way in which the nomads live in harmony with nature for as long as they are on this earth, and what we can take from that message. There are physical challenges as well as spiritual, ecological and theological for Morgan to overcome and it makes for incredible reading as she takes her four month-long journey of discovery.
Cloudstreet, Tim Winton
Tim Winton is an Australian national treasure, and quite rightly so. In one of his seminal works, Cloudstreet is a saga that covers the entire spectrum of human emotion and focuses on not one, but two families: The Pickles and the Lambs, brought together through adversity and trying to get along under one quite substantial roof. The novel spans a twenty year period of the trials and tribulations of close friends and relatives, with everything from adultery to drunkenness threatening to rock the foundations of the house on Cloudstreet.
In a Sunburned Country, Bill Bryson
Long before Bryson’s book Down Under, came In a Sunburned Country. The sunny island that’s home to some of the friendliest people, but 99 per cent (ish!) of the world’s deadliest creatures, is writing gold to someone like Bryson. With still only a relatively small population inhabiting this vast country, much of which is desert and unforgiving outback, there are definitely going to be some ‘characters’ to find and Bryson has a real knack for tracking them down… or in most cases, stumbling across them. It’s a very funny book. That’s all that really needs to be said. But then, what did you expect? It’s Bryson, in a cork hat, drinking a cold tinnie. Perfection. Enjoyment is key. Evolution Dance will provide an environment where children can grow and evolve as people, dancers and performers.” Tread The Boards Academy Of Performing Arts are also opening up a brand new school, at The Poppleton Centre. A local family business since 2006, their successful formula of energetic teaching and nurturing every ability has introduced hundreds of York children to a love of Singing, Dance and Drama. indeed anything that you own that has value. The Force Control Room has access to this site, although other members of the public do not, and the Police can use this site to identify items recovered and their owners. By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637
A NEW YEAR
A
fter Christmas all of us will find that we, or our children will have a whole host of new electronic gadgets, toys and other items of value. The evenings in January are still dark and as such your homes and your valuables will still be an inviting target for criminals. In previous articles I have already spoken about keeping your homes and vehicles secure and well lit to deter thieves. This is a message that is worth reinforcing again however particularly when most of us will have new items of value in the home. Use timer switches on your lights at home to make it appear that people are in even when you are out. The cost to yourself is negligible and far lower than the cost of replacing stolen goods. Keep your doors and windows shut and locked even when you are at home. It takes only a matter of seconds for somebody to reach through an opening and take something that is on display. Try not to leave things on view that could tempt an opportunistic thief. If you leave a tablet or mobile phone next to a window then it is an easy target for a thief. If you do become a victim of crime accurate descriptions of your property including serial numbers are vital if the Police arte to be able to identify items that they recover and return them to their rightful owner. Your insurance company will also want these details. There is a website called IMMOBILISE which is ideal for doing this. To set up an account on IMMOBILISE takes minutes and you just need a valid e mail address. You can then enter details of any electronic goods that you have, cycles, and 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WILL YOU FINALLY GET A GRIP IN 2015!
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
The UK financial regulator, the FCA, has admitted that one of the biggest shake ups in the UK financial arena - the Retail Distribution Review - has left swathes of individuals without access to advice.
U
K Government Adviser Carol Sergeant says “We have known for a long time that managing your finances effectively leads to increased well being and a better quality of life.” Yet more than half of the UK population is “living on the edge” financially, according to Government’s Money Advice Service (MAS). Apparently, MAS says, that’s because most people are suffering from poor financial skills. MAS’s only objective when it launched in 2010 was to improve people’s understanding and knowledge of financial matters. And by its own admission it seems to have failed. Despite the fact that it’s already spent almost £300 million – ultimately that’s your money.
There are now just 21,496 authorised financial advisers for a country with more than 65 million individuals. The FCA continue to bang on about investment risk without a murmour of inflation risk. Or tax risk. They never tell you that your biggest risk is that your money is not working for you. It’s working for the banks. For the tax man. For the local council. For a Government whose only role is to take money off you and dish it out around themselves. They never tell you your biggest risk is getting to the end of your working life with no dreams realised and nothing to show for your efforts. They’ll never tell you but I will. Stop burying your head in the sand and start getting your money working hard for you. It pays you to take independent advice. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COOKING
RED ONION SOUP WITH MELTING GRUYERE CROUTONS Ready in 1 hour 30 mins. Serves 4. the oil and butter in a large, deep 1. Heat heavy-based saucepan until the butter is sizzling. Add all the sliced onions and cook very gently over a low heat for 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Sprinkle over the sugar and cover and cook for a further 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are very soft and golden. Stir in the flour and half the mustard and cook for 1 minute, then gradually stir in the stock. Add the thyme sprigs, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper (see Tip) and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 3540 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Lightly toast the slices of French bread on one side. Spread the untoasted sides with the rest of the mustard and top with the grated Gruyere cheese. Pop under a hot grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Ladle the soup into warmed bowls and top each with two hot Gruyere croutons. Serve immediately garnished with thyme sprigs.

5. 6.
TIP If you use stock made up from stock cubes taste the soup before adding any seasoning as some can be quite highly seasoned.

HEALTH
DETOXING & FASTING THE FACTS BEHIND THE FADS By Alison Runham Many of the recent trendy fasting schemes don’t really ask you to fast at all, just to restrict your food intake on certain days or for a short period of time. Does it work? You may lose a lot of weight at first, but it can be hard to maintain as you are not fundamentally changing the way you eat. There does seem to be a connection between calorie consumption and lifespan but whether fasting gives the same results as daily moderation has yet to be proved. January. Dark days plus lots of ‘fancy food’ and alcohol have made us feel fat and sludgy. So, bombarded with more dietary information than ever we rush out to spend our gift vouchers on books about ultimate diets and detox plans. But will they really make us healthier or slimmer?
Detoxing
There are numerous ‘detox diets’ that either tell you to restrict or eliminate certain foods, or advocate eating just one type of super food to flush you clean. But many experts say that your body already has the tools it needs to detoxify itself. The kidneys, liver, colon and skin all work together to remove unwanted substances from our body. Much of the detox hype sounds seductively plausible. When we’re told that our bodies are full of undesirable substances that reduce our immunity, slow our metabolism and make us retain water and weight. But the British Dietetic Association has pronounced the concept ‘irrational and unscientific’. The headaches, fatigue and other symptoms you may experience after a few days on a detox diet are not caused by toxins now released into your bloodstream. In reality, these symptoms are usually caused by your body reacting to sudden deprivation of a substance your body is a little too used to – such as caffeine, sugar or alcohol.
Fasting
Intentionally going without food is not new. People have been fasting for religious purposes for thousands of years and there are long held beliefs that it can improve various medical conditions and general health. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
However if having a couple of semi-fasting days a week doesn’t make you feel ill and you don’t compensate by eating unhealthily on the other days, there’s no harm doing it.
So what should I do?
Eat a healthy and varied diet • Choose natural foods not manufactured ones. Eat plenty of vegetables of different colours, moderate amounts of fruit and lean protein. • Avoid sugar as it disrupts your natural appetite control and is known to be highly addictive. Artificial sweeteners may have no calories, but it doesn’t help you to break the habit. • Watch your carbohydrates. Potatoes, bread and cereal are pretty tasteless without added fat or sugar and that alone can cause you to take in more calories than you intended. • Cut out or reduce alcohol. Most experts agree that a little does no harm, but stick to the unit limits of 2 per day for women and 3 per day for men. Remember these are limits, not targets! • Drink water. Hopefully we all now know this doesn’t mean drinking 8 glasses per day, but ensure your intake is not all caffeinated (if you usually drink lots of caffeine, reduce slowly).
Lose weight safely
Most of us eat too much and there is evidence linking overconsumption of calories with reduced life-span and premature ageing, although the mechanism isn’t clear yet. Eat healthy ‘real’ foods, eat only when you are genuinely hungry and don’t eat too much. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th January

Top Tips from a dental professional
Dentures (Part 2) Dentures what are they? Dentures are a bespoke item manufactured by skilled technicians to the dentists’ by Christine Parker prescription. Whilst they BDS (GDC 72136) are not cheap they are a more cost effective replacement for multiple spaces in the mouth than bridges or implants and give a very natural and pleasing result. DRAWBACKS: Ideally they should be removed after each meal and rinsed to remove food debris They should be removed overnight to allow the supporting tissues to recover, much like you would remove contact lenses or glasses. If not made or cleaned properly they can weaken the remaining teeth causing further tooth loss. They do not have the same chewing force as your natural teeth You may need some time to adjust to them being in your mouth.

BENEFITS: Well made dentures can help improve the appearance, depending on which teeth are to be replaced we may be able to alter the shade shape and position of the teeth. They can be used to support the lips and cheeks when the natural teeth are lost and in some cases can really reduce the lines on the lower part of the face. They can be used to take the chewing load off the remaining natural teeth thereby reducing their wear. If your teeth are unstable and you are likely to suffer further tooth loss many dentures can be added to without too much difficulty. If you have a ‘hard bite’ the teeth and supporting plate can be made of high impact acrylic so the denture does not keep breaking. All our dentures are made by skilled local technicians using quality materials to give a natural and durable result. If you would like more information please contact Georgina at

A BETTER LIFE CAR BOOT CAPERS by Derek Thompson Derek Thompson is a writer and humourist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.com and he is also a regular at www.strictlywriting.blogspot.com
I
f Chinese philosophers ever need new pearls of wisdom, I’d like to suggest one of mine: When your garage is so full of tat that you can’t fit the car in, it’s time to do a car boot. I do have a tat filing system, of sorts, so it’s not difficult to find anything (if you can clamber over everything else). On one side, opposite the firewood pallet that we found dumped in a lay-by, is a salvaged cupboard unit, held together with an assortment of odd screws. In there live the boxes of books relegated from our shelves, an old beer tray from a charity shop and two binbags full of Anne’s castoffs - mainly shoes. We’ve always loved car boots. They’re really another form of recycling - turning unwanted goods into cash (and then buying other people’s flotsam). Car boots can also be a great place to pick up old and perfectly serviceable tools. For example, my muchloved £1 wrench was the only thing that could undo the old water pump so that we could replace the gasket and shaft head. When we parked up on site, people swarmed around our car as if we were in a zombie film (and I scare easily). Anne stepped out to force them back, but she was already doing deals before I’d lifted the last box of books from the boot. As car boot trader novices, we were surprised at how quickly some of our best stuff went, and even more surprised at how quickly it reappeared on other stalls at twice the price. Also, I lost count of how many times a cheery conversation ended up being steered towards the phrase: ‘Any chance of a discount?’ And this was often for books going for £1 apiece.
50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
I’m not a massive fan of haggling, although I did manage some furtive bartering for veg. After a couple of bursts of brisk trade, business really tailed off. And when the same faces went past for a third time we decided to call it a day. Ironically, packing up brought all the hardcore bargain hunters out from the shadows. A new phrase became the norm: “How much for this - save you taking it home?” Frankly, I felt embarrassed for the books. Once we’d finally closed the boot, we did a circuit together. Now, by some strange alchemy, random objects acquired unexpected allure. How had I ever got by without a ceramic foot warmer or a DVD of Yes Minister? Anne left me to it and made a beeline for one of the plant stalls. By the time I caught up with her, she was hunting for specimens on some invisible list I’d not been privy to. Once she’d checked what was available and asked about growing conditions, I watched, in astonishment, as she ceased swapping pleasantries to ask, “Is there any discount for buying in bulk?” She always was a fast learner. Anything we didn’t sell on the day went to a charity shop. It turned out that the ceramic foot warmer leaked (don’t ask...), so it now sits in ignominy in the garden. The DVD was excellent. I’ve moved it to the garage, in the empty cupboard, just in case.

ROLLS ROYCE WRAITH By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMagazine.co.uk)
it adds digits to the head-up display. Make no mistake, this big girl has serious pace. There’s no hiding the Wraith’s girth, though. It’s absolutely huge – and feels it. Most of the team who got behind the wheel exited with a huge grin on their face, not just because it was such an event to drive, but because they handed back the jewel-like key and returned the Wraith unscathed. Everyone also agreed that it was simply a very special place to spend time in.
T
his is surreal. I’m wrapped in the finest leather, staring at some of most ornate materials I’ve ever seen inside a car and yet still I’m wafting along the challenging A543 at a pace that is leaving the RTOTY crowd lagging behind. Surfing on a gloriously torque-filled surge of V12 goodness, delicately light steering guiding this two ton luxury monster across the Welsh moors, I’m opening up a gap on the cars behind me as my relationship with the Rolls-Royce Wraith finally clicks. For the last two days I’ve been living in fear of harming the £219,480 brute, every wayward sheep tying my stomach in knots, every oncoming tractor making me wince at the impending doom that never happens. You see driving the Wraith is quite some responsibility. With a price tag that wouldn’t look out of place in an estate agent’s window, piloting the curvy-rear ended British beauty – the sportiest of Rolls-Royces – really is a nerve-wracking experience. Well, at least at first it is. In time, as the miles rise, fear eases, and you finally begin to gel with the giant – and it’s then, at this moment, that the wonder of this incredible feat of engineering is finally hammered home. It’s here, now, on this stunning piece of tarmac that’s twisting across the dew-dipped Welsh countryside that the Wraith truly comes alive. The 624bhp V12 may be whisper quiet on the motorway, where the dash tells you there’s still 90 per cent of power in reserve (there’s no gaudy rev counter in here), but in kick down it growls, bellows deep and powers off towards the future like a Bullet Train. The first time I let the Roller scamper off, it shocks with the aggressive nature
52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Driving the Wraith is an event. From the automatically-closing suicide doors, to the inchdeep lamb’s wool carpets, to the glass buttons on the dash and beautifully machined solid metal vent pulls and piano black dash, everything inside feels five star hotel, Ritz-like perfect. All it needs is a butler on the options list to retrieve the umbrellas from inside the flanks of the two front doors to be truly palatial. Driving it to and from Wales for our shoot I was staggered at how comfortable, relaxing and easy it is to clock up hundreds of miles with so little effort. Yes, the 327g/km emissions and 20.2mpg might worry the wallet, but it’s a small price to pay for spa-like levels of luxury. Rolls-Royce insists its cars are bought by owner drivers – and after a week behind the wheel of the Wraith I can well believe that. Yes, sitting in the back might be a pleasant place to spend time, but the Wraith is aimed squarely at the driver and after shelling out close to a quarter of a million pounds I for one know exactly which seat I’d be occupying.

SHERIFF HUTTON JUMBLIES Well done to Sheriff Hutton Jumblies! In 2014, their jumble sales recorded yet another bumper year, in fact it has been their most successful year to date with a whopping total of £18,651 being raised for good causes. Working alongside support groups they have raised money for Treasure Chest, Save the Children, Helmsley Branch RNLI, Sheriff Hutton Playschool, Martin House, Yorkshire Cancer Research, York Against Cancer, Sheriff Hutton Bowls Club and the Chanticleer Singers to name but a few. This year is the Jumblies 30th year of fundraising so they are hoping to produce another record breaking year to celebrate! The Sales continue to be extremely popular with people coming from far and wide. All sales are held in Sheriff Hutton Village Hall starting at 2pm until 4pm with the first sale of 2015 to be held on 24th January raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind. YORK • JANUARY 2015 • ISSUE 108 Fluid pressure within the joint can also increase pain. That’s why both people and dogs experience increased joint stiffness and pain in bad weather. It’s not the cold or wet, but a drop in atmospheric pressure that allows the joint tissues to swell, causing stiffness and discomfort. Arthritis in damaged joints accelerates joint decay, reduces mobility, which in turn leads to muscle wastage. Loss in muscle tone makes the joint become less stable resulting in abnormal forces which create additional wear and tear. If left unchecked, this vicious cycle of pain and joint decay will worsen, dramatically reducing your pet’s mobility. Although arthritis can’t usually be cured, the good news is that we have an expanding range of treatments to help your pets. Food supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate and anti-inflammatory medication should help. Pets that are carrying a few extra pounds tend to struggle far more with stiffness and arthritis than slender ones, as the extra weight puts more strain on diseased joints, so weight loss can really help. “Although arthritis can’t usually be cured, the good news is that we have an expanding range of treatments to help your pets.” nurses run weight loss clinics and can give you lots of advice about helping your pet to lose weight. Exercise regimes can also make a difference: two or three shorter walks every day can be better than one long one. Hydrotherapy, acupuncture and magnetic collars may also be useful in some cases. If you are worried that your pet may have arthritis, please come and see us for a checkup!

LOVELY PAIR OF SISTERS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME Meet Willow & Isla, a lovely pair of sisters looking for a new home. These young ladies were brought in to us because their previous owner couldn’t cope with the large number of cats that she had collected. Willow & Isla both have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). This means that they have a compromised immune system and find it harder to fight off any infections they may contract. At the moment they are showing no signs of having the disease and are bright eyed and bushy tailed! To keep them safe from catching any bugs, and to prevent them from passing the disease on to other cats, Willow & Isla will need to be kept as indoor cats. They are young, happy and lively girls and will need plenty of stimulation and attention in their new home - but however much love they get they promise they will give back twice as much! Cats with FIV can live long and happy lives and all these girls need is for someone to give them a chance. These poor cats have been in the Centre

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal
MUD FEVER Mud fever is a common condition affecting horses during the winter months. It is characterised by inflamed, crusty and oozing skin at the back of the lower leg of the horse, especially in the heel region. It often affects white legs due to the skin being more sensitive and tends to affect hind limbs more so than forelimbs. Mud Fever mostly occurs in horses that spend some or all of their time living outdoors and occurs when the skin becomes wet and muddy, and therefore more susceptible to invasion by a bacteria called Dermatophilus Congolensis, which thrives in damp conditions, and can be difficult to ward off until environmental conditions change. As with all diseases, prevention is better than cure! Prevention of mud fever can be difficult in winter months when fields are constantly wet and muddy, but you can help to protect your horses heels by applying a waterproof barrier cream to prevent wet penetrating the skin. In horses with feathered limbs, it can be helpful to clip away the hair along the backs of the legs, which will help the skin dry more quickly. It will also help if you wash mud off the legs of your horse each night and then dry them thoroughly.

GARDENING The Truly ‘Green’ Garden By Pippa Greenwood ring the changes and ‘Go Organic’. Many gardeners have decided that they really want to concentrate on natural methods of pest control and the use of natural fertilising materials rather than chemical feeds. And they do it because it works and makes life so much better for the other less powerful creatures and plants we share our space with.
There are so many ways in which you can plot and scheme about all that your garden could have to offer in 2015, but there’s one thing I would ask you to consider: take the plunge,

Since we moved to our Hampshire garden nearly twenty years ago, I have kept it completely organic and believe me, it really is not difficult. Weed control can certainly be harder as there is no resorting to herbicides such as glyphosate, but if your garden doesn’t have too many persistent weeds, even that should not be too difficult. If you do have an existing problem then make weeding a regular part of your gardening time and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how speedily you start to get on top of it. True, organic gardening does take a bit more planning and forethought. If you grow vegetables you >>

>> will need to ensure that you rotate your crops. Just divide the space you have into three or four chunks and then ensure that each year you grow related crops together and then the following year, move each group into a new plot. It also pays to ensure that you really do garden as ‘well’ as you can, avoiding too many short cuts and taking the plant’s health and vigour as a prime consideration. In any part of the garden you need to try to choose plants that really are suited to the site as those grown in unsuitable conditions will be more prone to disease and pest attack.
pests including caterpillars, cabbage root fly and aphids. Traps such as submerged beakers of old beer or milk to catch slugs and sticky yellow cards to trap flying pests, all work well. Of course for many pests there are also biological controls available, plus a whole range of controls to stop greenhouse pests. Keeping the soil in good condition is a must and if you don’t already have a compost bin or heap, get on and make or buy one straight away. The choice is up to you, but I strongly recommend it, for a whole host of reasons, only some of which I have mentioned here.
Regular patrols to find problems, so that they can be caught at the early stages and dealt with promptly, mean fewer problems in the long-term and should ensure that you catch an infestation of pests or a disease outbreak before it gets too bad. A fa run mily tr c ee comare pany
Sprays of certain kinds are ‘allowed’ (those based on soft soap to control certain pests, copper based fungicides to control diseases etc) but most organic gardeners prefer to avoid them altogether. SHORT STORY
PERCY COMES TO DINNER by Jackie Brewster
Marjorie daydreamed as she stirred the bubbling pan full of her New Year’s Day casserole. The family were out watching the local rugby match, but would soon be home, cold and famished. She paused at the sound of Great Aunt Sophia making her way downstairs. This year Marjorie had drawn the short straw to have Sophia over for the New Year. She had arrived by train on New Year’s Eve carrying her musty handbag full of mystery false teeth, hairnets and used tissues. Last, but by no means least, in that cavernous bag was the black ceramic pot containing the cremated remains of Percy, her deceased husband. He was her constant companion. There were members of the family who had only ever known Percy as a black ceramic pot. He’d been dead for over twenty years and yet never missed a family occasion. Sophia, besides being rather absentminded, wasn’t really much trouble, and in many ways she tried to be helpful. She always offered to pop the kettle on or butter some bread, and Marjorie knew she should be grateful, but the kitchen was her domain and it felt uncomfortable to have another woman invading it.
“It’s all sorted Sophia, but thanks anyway”. “Would you mind if I make myself a cup of tea?”. “Let me do it for you Sophie, the kettle’s just boiled”. “I won’t hear of it, you’ve done enough, go and put your feet up”. Sophia began opening and closing cupboards so Marjorie decided to grab a handful of cutlery and beat a retreat to the dining room. Calmly she began to lay out each place setting. “I hope you don’t mind but I’ve added a bit of Percy to your stew dear”. Sophia called through the kitchen door, “It just needed a little something”. “Thank you Sophia”. Marjorie called back. She was slightly annoyed. It wasn’t a stew, it was a casserole, and, interfering with another woman’s recipe was really going too far. She took a deep breath and folded a napkin. Then she stopped. What had Sophia just said? She flew back into the kitchen, to find Sophia happily stirring the casserole. Next to the stove was Percy’s pot with the lid askew. Marjorie gasped as Sophia raised the wooden spoon to her lips.
She was putting the plates in the oven to warm when Sophia came in carrying Percy.
“Aunt Sophia stop!”. She shrieked. But it was too late, Sophia slurped down the casserole greedily.
“Something smells nice”. She said, “Do you want a hand with it?”. She lifted the casserole dish lid and sniffed.
“Mmm, just what it needed”. She licked her lips, then noticed Marjorie, “What on Earth’s wrong Dear?”.
62 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
“Tell me you haven’t put Percy in the casserole?”. “Not Percy”. Sophia seemed bewildered. “Why on Earth would I do that, Dear?”. She held up a glass jar that Marjorie recognised from the back of the spice rack. “It was parsley, and just a teaspoon. Here, have a taste”. Sophia thrust the same spoon into Marjorie’s open mouth. The casserole now had a distinctly different tang, Marjorie thought, but wasn’t completely ruined. She made a mental note to throw that jar away, judging by the fusty taste it must by months out of date. She heard the front door open and the sound of six pairs of boots in the hall. “We’d better start dishing up Sophia”. She said. “Take Percy out of the way”. And it was probably for the best that neither lady noticed the seal on the lid of the parsley jar. It had never once been opened.
