elcome to the first 2012 edition of the Handymag. No slow start to the New Year here with magazines to print in the first week of January. Having enjoyed 2 fantastic weeks of holiday before Christmas, getting my head into work mode again is proving particularly challenging. Kenya was our holiday treat, such a great place for wildlife, scenery and beeches. My other half has worked out there on and off since 1992 and we really wanted to show the children where he goes – usually to see farming communities and fields. Unsurprisingly, this month’s competition is hunt the hippo; a holiday favourite! Despite the doom and gloom over the economy, I’m remaining positive about 2012. Why be otherwise, and the many small businesses I work with are also giving me cause to think that as an area we are doing ok. But please continue to support our local businesses where possible. Many provide better choice, price and service than the giant brands and deserve our custom. Why not make this a late, but very worthy, new year’s resolution! Come mid-January, as I write, and there’s still no

snow, bulbs are emerging and maybe the threat of another cold year has passed. My children, however, as the school holiday counts down, are hanging on to the hope of snow and closed schools or cancelled buses. But wow has it been windy here! A special plea for community events and clubs. In publishing the Handymags I take a lot of satisfaction from promoting local groups. These listings (see page 60 onwards) are completely free to local organizations and charities. So if you have an event happening, big or small, are raising money for a charity or run a local group and would value some publicity, please get in touch. May 2012 be a good year for us all. Well done to Mr Waters of Rillington for winning the December competition. Until next time.....

Clothing care adds up to much more than dry cleaning
N
orton Dry Cleaners is thriving under its new owners, Helen and David Greenwell, who took over the business in July last year. They are supported by a twowoman team: Denise, who has worked at Norton Dry Cleaning since it was first launched by its previous owners six years ago, and Helen’s sister Anita – who does the alterations, and makes it a genuine local, family business. As well as the reliable, all-day cleaning service, there are offers every month giving customers the chance to save money on essential services. The personal service offered by Helen and the team means your clothes receive much more than an ordinary cleaning service – Norton provides a full, attentive clothing care service to both you and your clothes: • Everything is hand-ironed; there are no roller presses on the premises, so you can be confident your clothes will come back to you in the condition

you last saw them in.
• For extra convenience, Norton
offers a free collection and delivery service • The Norton team also have the skill to mend and alter your clothes – so bring in your loose buttons, dropped hems and minor tears along with your laundry. Norton also accepts commercial contracts from gyms, football teams and the local council – offering a reliable service with a fast turnaround. Helen said: “We offer a friendly, helpful service, we’ll basically do anything your clothes need.” For more information or queries, call Norton Dry Cleaning on 01653 699629 or drop in at 5 Howe Road, Norton.

First Love
February
They say you never forget your first love. Spoiling us for future relationships, the flame burns intensely but is often short-lived. It can be overwhelming, all-consuming and breathtakingly exciting. Surely it’s got to be downhill after that. We may be long past the first flourish of teenage heart-trembling, but this Valentine’s Day, why not rekindle the old flame and fall in love for the first time, all over again. Twilight. Stephenie Meyer I gave this book to my partner to read. He was, understandably, incredibly cynical about the teenage love-story but I can honestly say that from the first page, he was hooked. This masterful tale of forbidden love between a vampire and a human, takes you on a blood-pumping and heart-fluttering journey of yearning and lust. Set deep within the misty and brooding Pacific Northwest coast of America it’s sure to warm the cockles of even a vampire’s ice-cold heart. The Reader. Bernhard Schlink Set against a backdrop of post-war Germany, this love story asks how generations have come to terms with what happened during the Holocaust. The novel opens with a fifteen year old Michael Berg falling for the much older and more experienced Hanna Schmitz. Hanna is illiterate and after a chance meeting with 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Berg, he begins to read novels aloud to her and their relationship begins to blossom. The story is written in three parts, charting Michael’s life. It’s a complex tale of first love, realisations about the world and coming to terms with a history that irrevocably shaped Germany’s present and future. It’s thoughtprovoking and truly heartbreaking. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging. Louise Rennison Louise Rennison’s hugely popular comic novel is the first in the series about lovelorn teenager, Georgia Nicholson. It follows the trials and tribulations of Georgia and her best friend Jas, who form part of the Ace Gang. It’s packed with sleepovers and family life, along with heartstopping and life-altering crushes on the object of her affection, ‘Sex God Robbie’. How do you cope when the boy
of your dreams winds up with one of the ‘wet weeds’ instead of living happily ever after with you? The original Bridget Jones in a training bra, Georgia’s diary charts her path from girl to woman…and every step in-between. One Day. David Nicholls Everybody who went to university in the eighties will both weep uncontrollably and laugh out loud at the nostalgia that One Day exudes. Published in 2009, it follows the twenty year courtship of Emma and Dex, catching up with them on the same day, the 15th of July, St Swithin’s Day. One Day is filled with humour and wonderfully rounded, yet beautifully flawed characters you’re bound to fall in love with. Beginning as the two protagonists leave university and embark on their journey into the great wide world, fate soon overcomes youthful enthusiasm and aspiration. How long do we hold onto first loves, dream careers and a notion of happily-everafter?
‘For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo’.
Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare We know it’s going to end badly from the start, and yet we can’t get enough of the Bard’s starcrossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. It’s got everything; romance, comedy, drama, feuding families and an apothecary. There have been many adaptations, film versions and takeoffs but why not settle down with Shakespeare’s original play and let the whirlwind romance sweep you off your feet.

FEBRUARY 2012 • ISSUE 74 TECH SPEC
On the face of it, St Valentine and technology don’t have much in common, but that doesn’t stop gadget sites and shops from trying to persuade you that nothing says “I love you” like a pink USB vacuum cleaner. If you avoid the novelty stuff, though, there are plenty of great gift ideas - and very few of them are pink.
Hi-tech gifts for the gadget geek in your life
Gadgets they’ll love S
ome of the best ideas are the simplest, such as the HiJack Double Headphone Sharer (£7): when you travel together you can both enjoy the same video or music. If you fancy getting really cosy while you do it, you could also invest in a Double Slanket (around £25), a two-person version of the sofa snuggler - although we wouldn’t recommend buying one if your beloved cares about being cool (in the fashion sense) rather than toasty. Many gadget sites are stuffed with hilarious housework-related gifts, such as the Diva Washing Up Brush (around £6), and novelty items such as the Y-front shaped Hot Pants Hand Warmers (£5.95) although perhaps best passed by if you’d still like to be in a relationship on February the 15th. Tea lovers might appreciate the awfully named IngenuiTEA (£17), a clever infuser that delivers the perfect cup of tea from loose leaves of any description, while the LEDembedded Model Mirror (£15.99) is perfect for fixing eyeliner - or guyliner when your partner’s out and
about. Glowing wine glasses (£6.99) can add a touch of fun to even the cheapest plonk, while another awfully named gadget - Le Whif - promises perfection: all the taste of chocolate without any of the calories. Its secret? You don’t eat the chocolate; you inhale it. It sounds bizarre but it does work, lots of online reviewers seem pleased with it and at just £5 for a three-pack it very affordable. If the object of your desire really loves chocolate you could always invest in a chocolate fountain (from around £33, widely available) although it’s worth remembering that once the novelty wears off, it’ll take up a lot of space as it gathers dust in a cupboard. If you’re old enough to remember the days of music on cassettes, you’ll know the power of a romantic mix tape but while cassettes have gone to the technology graveyard, the mix tape lives on in the form of Suck UK’s superbly
clever USB Mix Tape (£16.95). It comes in six retro designs, looks like a tape and comes with an inlay card for scribbling your song titles in carefully drawn biro, but unlike your old C90s it offers pristine digital sound and 900 minutes of digital audio on the enclosed USB drive. If the thought of sharing your pop favourites with your partner fills you with fear, perhaps because you’re a Cliff fan and your beloved is more partial to Slipknot, then don’t despair: technology offers all kinds of personalised gifts. The “Your Life’s Theme Song” plaque (£54.95) is a framed CD or 7” single commemorating a special day, such as the day you met, featuring the UK number one single for that day, while U Star Novels (www.ustarnovels. co.uk) will happily insert your name(s) into a novel. With categories including romance novels, classics and, er, vampires, there’s a title to suit most tastes. Expect to pay around £24 to become Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare’s play or to take a starring role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Richard Webster at Prospect Design can help you turn your home into your dream property.
ichard Webster of Prospect Design is a local architectural technologist, offering a friendly, accessible service for people looking for cost-effective solutions to extend, convert or build a new property. Prospect Design offers a full range of Architectural services from a full “conception to completion” architectural design and management service to CAD drafting. Richard can also act as your agent in submitting Planning and Building regulation applications on your behalf taking the stress out of a potentially complicated procedure. Richard Webster established the business at the beginning of 2007 having always wanted to be his own boss. With 8 years’ experience under his belt he felt the time was right time to pass on his skills and expertise to help people plan affordable, achievable building projects. Working with a professional during the early stages of any build will help you to establish a brief that realises a design which not only meets your needs but is viable to build and costeffective too. Taking advantage of a professional’s advice, experience, design skills and knowledge of regulations and industry contacts when considering a building project will save you time and money. Richard explains how he is able to help from the outset, “I can talk through the pro’s and cons of the different decisions that need to be made in terms of design and construction. For example, sketch schemes can be used to illustrate different designs, concepts and solutions. This approach should help you maximise the potential of any projects in terms of adding value to your property and improving the usability and space available in your home.”
By offering potential clients a free, no-obligation consultation prior to any formal quotation Richard can ensure that he really understands what the client is looking for in terms of design and general budget and thus tailor his designs, services and quotation accordingly. Richard provides a fixed price quotation so that you know from the outset what the costs will be. Prospect Design aims to continually improve the service offered to clients. Richard receives regular industry and technical updates so he can advise clients on the most suitable solutions for them. Prospect Design can also offer advice on sustainable “eco friendly” components where possible. Richard strives to deliver the best possible service in terms of advice, experience and value for money. “With a slow housing market and low interest rates limiting investments now could be a great time to invest in your home,” Richard explains. Richard’s excellent record of working with clients and getting projects through the planning process make him a safe bet for getting your building project moving. For new builds, extensions and conversions contact Richard Webster BSc (Hons) Arch Tech for a free initial consultation.

Quality & value in Malton
since 1986

f you thought glass is as glass does and little changes in the world of windows from one decade to the next – you’d be wrong. As well as changing fashions in how we like our homes to look, technology and manufacture methods move on too. So if you’re one of the thousands of homeowners opting to improve rather than move, it’s a great time to extend your home with a stylish conservatory, Alan Walker, Owner of Fersina or invest in an Windows upgrade for your doors and windows. It’s now come to the point where many of the windows Fersina upgrades and replaces are uPVC rather than wood. Unfortunately, many of the windows fitted in the 1980s and 90s are no longer up to modern-day building specifications, or had inadequate joints and fittings, and now need replacing. Good quality windows, doors and conservatories can help conserve energy and provide added home security, as well as making your property look great! With 25 years’ of trading in Malton, family-run firm Fersina have developed the experience and know-how to help customers make their dreams come true – whatever those dreams may be. Owner Alan Walker said: “Once upon a time people would come to us, we would explain what we do and see if it matched with what the customer wanted. Now customers come and we can just ask them ‘what do you want?” Fersina’s main business involves supplying top quality hand-finished German PVCu windows and doors. They can also supply a full range of composite doors to suit any design and budget, from economy-priced models to top-of-the-range designs. Their range of authentic-looking Georgian windows, currently popular in cream, are even
acceptable in the National Park conservation area. Fersina also specialise in glass roof conservatories, complete with hi-tech self-cleaning glass incorporating solar filters. And whatever colour conservatory you’d like, Fersina can supply it – even in green or black! Repairs and replacements are part of the Fersina service, whether you need your fascias and gutterings replaced or a lock fixed. They are familiar enough with many glazing techniques that they can carry out repairs to a wide range of makes and types of window. Fersina belong to Network Veka, an organisation of UK PVCu installation companies committed to putting quality and the customer first – and their high customer satisfaction levels have made Fersina one of the organisation’s most successful companies. They have a policy of never using pressurised selling tactics and you’ll never find a Fersina representative on your doorstep, unless you’ve invited him round for one of Fersina’s courteous, no-obligation visits. As well as treating their customers ethically, Fersina also try to take care of the environment – all the windows, doors and conservatories they take out are deglazed and recycled, and leadfree windows are available for those who want them. Pay a visit to Fersina’s showroom on Horsemarket Road, Malton, North Yorkshire, or call them on 01653 693590. In the Fersina workshop

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...”
“Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had
her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 20 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more

limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, or the new one which opened in Acomb early this year, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of

creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake
on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tired-out kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense knowhow, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

A Proverbial Life... The straw that broke the camel’s back...
Cracked
T
here’s a broken tile in my bathroom that’s about to cause a major incident. This isn’t any old tile; this is the tile that despite my best efforts has remained broken for three years. This is the tile that may just signal the end of my marriage, my descent into screaming madness and the end of peace in this household. This is the tile that haunts me with its broken corner and cracked face. Over the years repeated requests to replace this tile have elicited a variety of responses from Mr Fixit (otherwise known as Husband). Promises have been made to fix it: ‘Tomorrow, at the weekend, when I get a spare minute.’ Multiple reasons have been given as to why this tile has not been sorted out: a lost tile cutter, a lack of adhesive, a slip of memory, a dearth of daylight (apparently tile fixing can only occur in optimum weather conditions). I’ve even offered to do the job myself. This was met with snorts of laughter and comments about my inability to change a light bulb; which is unfair as I can change light bulbs in an emergency...as long as there is a step ladder to hand and someone to catch me if I fall. I’ve been a reasonable woman – so far. I’ve left a respectable interval between tile fixing requests; I haven’t tutted, rolled my eyes, muttered under my breath or screamed at the top of my lungs - yet. In the normal course of events a broken tile wouldn’t overly bother me, but after three years I feel I’ve got just cause for grievance. Therefore, I have now decided to take
38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
matters totally, completely and utterly into my own hands. I’m going to take unilateral action to bring ‘Tilegate’ to a satisfactory conclusion – I’m going to get someone in to do it. This is something I’ve previously offered to do, only to be met with looks of absolute incredulity and horror that I would even consider such disloyalty to this home’s Mr Fixit. However, I’ve been driven to take this action by a nugget of information that came my way yesterday. My Mr Fixit has offered to do some wallpapering in our son’s home. Now, not only has he offered to do it but he’s set a firm date for work to commence. I’m dumbfounded, flabbergasted and livid. I don’t begrudge our son his father’s help; however, I want this tile fixed! Therefore, I’ve already phoned up a very nice man who advertises locally. He’s coming next week to replace the tile, and he’s also going to have a look at the carpet that needs fixing down, the sticking door in the kitchen and the loose blind in the living room. I’m on a bit of a roll now. I have no intention of telling my beloved Mr Fixit that another man will be trespassing on his territory. Instead I intend to wait until he notices that the offending tile has been replaced; then I shall casually say: ‘Oh yes, I got someone in to do it.’ I can’t wait. by A. RYEDALE Decorating a child’s bedroom is all about flexibility – and with a bit of flair it’s easy to create a space that’s as practical as it is imaginative, and that doesn’t cost the earth
Child’s Play W
hen decorating a child’s bedroom, remember the three Fs: fun, function and flexibility. Children need stimulation – though too much brightly coloured plastic will make your eyes ache – and organisation, so that you can occasionally see the floor. But it’s flexibility that’s the most important. Unless you really want to redecorate every couple of years, keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral, just changing the accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers, bean bags, blinds and lampshades, as necessary. That way you’ll be able to create a room that will last right through from babyhood until your little darling leaves home.
Nurseries
The younger the child, the more ‘stuff’ they seem to have, and for a newborn storage is allimportant. You could buy a set of free-standing shelves (if the shelves can be raised and lowered when necessary, so much the better) or fix some ‘floating’ shelves to the walls. Better still, if you have a period house with alcoves either side of a chimney breast, consider turning them into conceal-all built-in wardrobes. Most baby toys can be stored in colourful, soft plastic buckets, or in drawstring bags hung from the back of the door or a peg rail. Avoid buying furniture that’s very babyspecific – he or she won’t notice it and it will date very quickly. Instead, choose well-made, simple pieces that will still be useable (even if they have to be given a lick of paint) in decades to come. Arrange the room to suit you – middleof-the-night visits are even less fun when you stub your toe on a sticking-out chair, and instant access to the cot/bed, storage and toys will make your life easier. As for décor, choose soft colours and ensure your lighting isn’t too glarey. Fitting a dimmer is a great idea – usually a quick and inexpensive job for a qualified electrician.

Simple white furnishings will last years and can be accessorised to suit your child’s age. Humphrey’s Corner cot bed, £300, and Brompton furniture, all Mothercare, 0845 330 4030; mothercare.com.
Older children
The storage theme continues as your children grow older, so increase the options (and avoid spending a fortune) by thinking laterally and visiting junk-shops for chests of drawers, blanket boxes and the like. Make sure they’re stable and don’t have any splinters; then simply sand and paint, changing any knobs and handles if necessary. For storage of small toys, felt tip pens and so on, use washed-up tins (no sharp edges, mind), ice cream tubs or shoe boxes, perhaps covered in offcuts of wallpaper for a unified look. Now’s the time to consider a raised sleeper bed – children of this age need plenty of space in which to play. Keep furniture to the edges of the room, so there’s plenty of clear floor area in the middle. And for decorative interest, how about fixing a large magnetic board to one wall, or painting a wall or a cupboard door with blackboard paint? Wall stickers are great fun, or you could hang artists’s canvas painted in bright blocks of colour, or else camouflage Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 7th February

PETS
Pet
Passports
by Nicola Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets
I
n these long, dark winter months it’s nice to have something to look forward to and often that’s the thought of a summer holiday, somewhere warm and sunny where we can relax and get away from it all.
Increasingly people are choosing to take their pets abroad with them too and this has been made possible in recent years with the advent of the Pet Passport scheme. As of 1st January 2012 some changes have been brought about within this scheme to make it simpler and more straightforward and also to bring us into line with the requirements of the other countries that make up the EU. The procedure is now as follows, your pet (cat, dog or ferret) needs to have a microchip implanted, so that they can be individually identified at the time of travel, and then a vaccination against rabies is administered, this is given into the scruff at the back of the neck in the same way other vaccines are injected. A waiting period of 21 days must then elapse before the animal can travel and a document called a Pet Passport must be completed by a veterinary surgeon allowing identification of your pet and their vaccination status. Each individual carrier company has their own requirements and these should be checked when booking your holiday, some will need a certificate done within 48 hours of traveling to ensure your pet is healthy and able to withstand the journey. Once these procedures have been completed your pet is free to travel within the EU and certain other countries and, as long as the rules are followed, should be free to return to the UK without the need for quarantine. The passport remains valid as long as the rabies vaccination is kept up to date. Before attempting to re-enter the UK dogs must be treated against tapeworms, not less than 24 hours or more than 120 hours before re-entry, ie. 1-5 days. This treatment has to be administered by, and documented by, a vet in the country you are traveling back to the UK from. Previously, there had been a requirement to treat for ticks as well but this has been discontinued along with the blood test that
42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
ensured the appropriate levels of immune response to the vaccination against rabies. Pet owners, however, should still be aware of the risks of picking up diseases other than rabies whilst abroad and so should consider tick treatment and also the use of a collar to prevent sandflies biting their pet, as these can transmit the disease leishmaniasis. Although time consuming, the old system requiring a blood test and compulsory 6 month wait did at least ensure a good level of protection against rabies so your vet may still advise you to have this done, even though it is no longer mandatory part of the procedure. For further information about these changes and the scheme as a whole your are advised to check the DEFRA website http://www.defra.gov. uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel for more information or call their helpline on 0870 241 1710.

At the
cinemA War horse
Based on the book by Michael Morpurgo and from director Steven Spielberg comes War Horse, an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets - British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter - before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.
the muppets
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary and Gary’s girlfriend Mary from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater. And drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage a telethon and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways.

the Woman in Black
Based on the classic ghost story, this film tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer who is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town’s tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been disappearing under mysterious circumstances. When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful woman in black, Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Winter
Perfume Plants
by Pippa Greenwood
HOMES & GARDENS
There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 51
HOMES & GARDENS The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual oriental-looking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset - sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel - for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loamfree multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down. Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eyecatching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place - once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small white-cream flowers which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try.

The world’s highest road pass
Khardung La
In the Indian Himalayas, Khardung La has its head in the clouds and its height in doubt. Is this really the world’s highest road pass? The sign at the top reads 18,380 feet but some say that refers to the old mule track higher up. Measurements abound, with different results, but those who make it to the top stand firm. Give or take a little, ignore dirt tracks in neighbouring countries, and this is the highest driveable road in the world.
T
he journey begins with long leisurely zigzags waltzing back and forth across the barren slopes. Far below, the Indus river is just a scratch on the landscape, the oasis of Leh dwindles away and the mountain desert of Ladakh grabs you by the throat, like a snow leopard on a hunt. The South Pullu checkpoint is the last sign of human life except for bikers hungry for a challenge and truckers eking a living. After that, there is no turning back. In this sensitive border area, the road from Leh to the Shyok and Nubra valleys over the pass is maintained by the army, no crash barriers but enough tarmac to call it a road and enough potholes to keep drivers on their toes. It’s wide enough for a truck and a half but traffic is one way, up from Leh in the morning, down after lunch. However, special permissions may be granted to bend the rules so it’s best to be prepared. It takes a good two hours to cover the 23 miles to the top, unless a truck breaks down or snow begins to fall. Then there’s plenty of time to gaze at the precipitous drops, the boulders balancing above your head and the wilderness where even goats refuse to venture. There isn’t a tree in sight, just loose stones and shrivelled up lichen. ‘Always keep a cheerful attitude’, is the official advice so now and then a tinselled 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
truck begins to honk and it feels almost like party time. Glaciers glint, peaks rise, jagged as a knife’s edge, and the first prayer flags flutter to wish everyone luck. Soon there’s a whole forest of them and you barely see the finishing line where the long awaited hut serves tea and hot noodles. It’s almost warm inside but up on the hillock, the shrine beckons. ‘Avoid running or moving too fast, you have gained 7000 feet’, reads the sign. Steps, rocks, you scramble to the top, light-headed, struggling to breathe, but the views are worth every dizzying moment along the way, stretching right across the Ladakh range from the Zanskar glaciers in the south to the Karakoram in the north. The Nubra Valley spreads like a pinkish glow into the distance, clouds come and go and an overloaded bus becomes stuck on a hairpin bend. Visitors buy souvenir mugs in the army shop then head back down, an hour ahead of time. No one seems to mind. The sun is shining and the marmots are out, frolicking all coppery gold on the rocks, including a couple on hind legs entwined in a last minute courtship dance before winter. They’re not worried about metres or feet, they’re just having a good time on the bleak slopes of Khardung La. by Solange Hando Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 7th February

FOOD
Meals in Minutes Here’s a delicious winter warming mid-week supper that can be rustled up in less than 40 minutes, We’ve used chicken fillets, but you can use cheaper boneless chicken thighs or try strips of lean sirloin steak or pork fillet instead.
Serv es 4
Read 35 m y in inut es
Chicken
Goulash 2 tbsp sunflower oil
600g skinless chicken fillets, thinly sliced 1 red onion, peeled and chopped 200g button mushrooms, wiped 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp plain flour 150ml passata (see tip) 150ml chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tbsp soured cream Boiled potatoes, to serve Fresh chopped parsley, to garnish
Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the chicken and onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until both are lightly browned. Add the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes. Mix together the paprika and flour and stir into the pan. Cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in the passata and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Serve topped with soured cream and boiled potatoes. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley to garnish.
TIP
Passata is simply ripe tomatoes that have been pureed then sieved to remove any skin and pips. You’ll find it in jars near the canned tomatoes in the supermarket. You can use a small can of chopped tomatoes instead - just whizz in a food processor or with a hand blender until smooth.

As I’m writing this in the first week of January, I’m still not eating chocolate! Every year, I set myself a New Years Resolution, but to be honest, this is the longest I’ve ever lasted. In theory, resolutions are a fantastic opportunity for change; in reality, I give in after about three days. This year I’ve decided to show some self-control and try to stick at it for a bit longer, so whilst I am sat at home - missing my chocolate, I hope you’ve had more luck in keeping your New Year’s Resolutions, be it to stop biting your nails, or to stop wasting money on junk that (to be honest) you might never actually use. This year, from the 27 July to 12 August, London is hosting a legendary event for the first time since 1948. London Olympic Games will be bringing together 205 Nations to compete in competitions from Handball to Taekwondo in 28 different venues! Although I didn’t manage to get any tickets for the Olympics, I’m still looking forward to watching it on the TV – the horse riding and gymnastics in particular! I just love watching athletes spring and leap their way across the floor; performing moves which I know from personal experience are extremely difficult. Trust me, if you’ve never tried performing a backward walkover into splits, don’t. It hurts. On a more positive note, me and the other 11 people going to Kenya have just raised over £700 from fundraising activities, such as a cake sale in Malton market and giving bag upon bag of unused clothes to ‘Bags to School’. On top of that, we have made plans for more activities to provide us with the money we need for our month-long trip to Kenya. I hope you’ve had a fantastic start to the New Year, and I’ll see you next month,

Practical tips to help you save money on motoring
FEBRUARY 2012 • ISSUE 74
T
here are some eco-warriors out there who believe the humble automobile is the devil on wheels. In recent years car manufacturers have worked hard to change the car’s planet killing image with hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-sipping eco models. But what if you can’t afford a new car and still want to go green? Simply thinking about how and when you use your car, the products you use and the way you look after your vehicle can make a real difference. 1. CHANGE YOUR STYLE - If there’s one guaranteed way of slashing your CO2 output it’s by changing your driving habits. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking, drive with the windows up to avoid drag and remove any unused extras such as roof racks. Change up at the most economical point – roughly 2,500rpm for petrols and 2,000rpm for diesels. 2. IN A LATHER - A clean car might be a pretty car, but do you need to do it every week? Use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose to save water. 3. SPRING CLEAN - Carrying around your golf clubs or a set of tools can seriously inflate your fuel consumption. 4. CHECK IT OUT - When your car is serviced regularly it’s not only less likely to break down, but it’ll be more environmentally friendly too.
5. PLAN AHEAD - Using sat nav is not only a great way to make motoring less stressful, but it’s green too! By avoiding getting lost and taking the most direct route to your destination you’ll cut fuel bills. 6. TYRE PRESSURES - Check tyre pressures regularly – correctly inflated rubber saves fuel. 7. AT YOUR SERVICE - Even things as simple as insurance, breakdown cover and vehicle inspections can be green. The Environmental Transport Association provides all of them in a carbon neutral way. 8. GREEN OPTION - Try a fuel saving tyre – such as the Michelin Energy or Firestone Fuel Saver – which claim to reduce fuel consumption by adding silica to their compounds. And you could try ‘green’ cleaning products, like the CarPlan EcoCar range which offers a host of environmentally-friendly products derived from vegetable and plant extracts. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Sally
Sally is now back in kennels awaiting her forever home. She is a very friendly girl with people and other dogs and loves to play with a ball, only giving it up if something better is on offer! She walks well on the lead after initial excitement and would suit an active owner/family who can give her the love and attention she so deserves. Her ‘bold’ looks hide a very loving and kind natured dog who will sit on command and is learning to recall to her name.
Benji
Benji, is desperate for a loving home. We have had him in kennels since June, but he is such a lovely little dog, its about time he got the family life he deserves! He is a 2-3 year old cross breed. Small to medium in size. He is very active and loves his walks, playtime and treats. He would make an ideal pet for an active family with older children, or a couple who like getting out and about in the fresh air.
Why not help us to help our dogs by doing some fundraising? www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 65

ickets are now on sale for a spectacular show which will take place on Saturday 25th February next year at Malton’s Milton Rooms, featuring the UK’s number one Beatles tribute band, the Fab Beatles! We’re expecting it to be a sell-out concert and have everyone “dancing in the aisles” with all proceeds going to local charity Ryedale Special Families. Formed in 1991 the Fab Beatles have risen through sheer hard work and dedication to be one of the most sought-after Beatles tribute bands in the world today, with concerts performed all over the UK, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. Chosen by the BBC as “The Best”, and commissioned by EMI to promote the “Beatles 1” CD, the Fab Beatles pride themselves on their professionalism and attention to detail. It is well documented that their sound is the closest you will ever hear to the original Beatles! Their show starts with early “Hamburg” material and goes right through to “Let It Be” and the break-up of the band, with costumes from the 1965 “Shea stadium” look to “Sgt Pepper” and “Abbey Road”, with a repertoire that is second to none! The Fab Beatles use only authentic instruments and costumes, and even boast to have the very drum-kit used by Ringo on The Beatles 1964 American tour! Tickets are on sale now at only £12.50 and are available by calling in at Malton Tourist Information Centre or by phoning them on 01653 600048. Alternatively, you can email them at maltontic@btconnect.com
