elcome to the April edition of the Handy Mag York.

Firstly, an apology to those who attempted our crossword last month. You will have noticed that the clues didn’t fit with the grid! Also the O’Leary the Leprechaun Competition had the wrong close date. I’ve checked more carefully this month to make sure all is ok! It seems that with Spring things are picking up for our local businesses. With a lot of new businesses joining the Handy Mag, it has been a big challenge this month fitting everything in. I think that next month the HandyMag will have to go bigger if I’m to accommodate all of the business and community content and other features there for your interest. Well done to Mrs Chapman of Huntington for winning the ’Pablo the Painter’ competition in the February editions. This month there’s ‘Lucy the Lamb’ to search for (see page 28). I love receiving all of your competition entries, especially from children who have drawn a picture of the cartoon character they have been looking for! One day I promise to publish some of these comments and drawings. Thank you to anyone who joins in. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 3rd April! We are running a special feature on Haxby in the May edition. If you have a Haxby business or local group you’d like to see featured, please let me know. Until next month and Happy Easter...

Marianne ps If you have anything you wish to place in the May edition, the deadline is Tuesday 5th March.

How to choose the right agent for your property sale

W

hen the time comes to sell your home, how do you choose which estate agent to appoint? According to Ben Hudson, the proprietor of one of York’s leading estate agents Hudson Moody, a good starting point is to find an agent who clearly understands the stresses involved in moving and who accepts that you are likely to want to sell your home with minimal stress and for the most attractive figure the current market will pay within a convenient timescale. Here are some of Ben’s guidelines for choosing the right agent to sell your home.

Local Expertise Buyers overwhelmingly prefer to work with local experts, who they regard as “in the know”, so choose a well established local agent.

Valuation Beware! Don’t fall into the trap of simply choosing the agent with the highest valuation of your property. An inflated price attracts the wrong buyers to your property, and the right buyers never see it, resulting in the property going stale on the market. This often leads to the property falling below its true market value. The issue of correct valuation is paramount. It is critical that you appoint an agent who not only has a track record of successful sales in the area but also has a thorough working knowledge of current buyer activity, and who can interpret prevailing market trends to your advantage. 2011 has started off busier than the last three years and at Hudson Moody sales are starting to increase once again.

Commission Don’t necessarily choose the estate agent with the lowest fees. Look at the service as a • info@thehandymag.co.uk

whole including the amount and quality of advertising. At Hudson Moody we endeavour to be competitive and will match fees on a like for like basis.

Enthusiasm If an agent is not enthusiastic about your property – don’t instruct them. A positive approach to selling your home is essential if buyers are to be inspired into buying your home.

Advertising Make sure that you choose an agent who advertises properties similar to yours in the local press. Chances are that they will already have a large pool of buyers who have enquired about similar homes to yours.

Internet Find out how easy it is for buyers to use the agents property search facility by visiting the website yourself. Is it impressive, state of the art, and does it provide useful buying and selling advice? Over 80% of buyers use the internet when looking for a property so you need to be sure that your property is found and promoted quickly and easily. Does the agent subscribe to the most effective property

portals. The UK’s leading site Rightmove.co.uk has over 80% of the traffic looking for property and it is important that you use an agent who is listing here. At Hudson Moody we are also able to upgrade your property to a premium listing to help it stand out from others.

After SalesLiaison A sale is not done when a buyer is found and many a sale has been lost due to poor follow-up or inadequate liaison with surveyors or solicitors. Choose an agent that provides a dedicated sales progression service, that employs people who are trained to spot potential difficulties long before they arise, and who spend 100% of their time working towards a successful outcome.

Hudson Moody deliver a professional and enthusiastic service. We have available all the latest technology in order to ensure our properties are marketed to the widest possible audience. We understand that what we are dealing with is people’s most valuable asset as well as being their home.

Kitchen & bedroom designs to suit you

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone • info@thehandymag.co.uk

looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...”

“Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 20 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited

because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, or the new one which opened in Acomb early this year, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of

creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers.

on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want.

Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.

“We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.”

Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake

Books

to Raise a Smile April Fool’s day: a time for practical jokes and having a laugh at the expense of others. Luckily, there’s no need with our top five humorous books - great for giving and guaranteed to tickle the funny bone (no itching powder or whoopee cushions required).

The Life of Fly

by Magnus Muhr You may think that the life of a fly must be fairly dull, buzzing around and getting swatted all the time, but Swedish photographer Magnus Muhr has shown the world otherwise. This collection captures what they really get up to: from sunbathing and sports to performing their own version of Riverdance.

F In Exams: The Best Test Paper Blunders by Richard Benson The clock is ticking and you haven’t got a clue what the right answer is. Either that, or you fancy blagging an A* with your hilarious wit. Here is a collection of wrong (but very amusing) answers taken from test papers on a number of subjects.

A Simples Life: The Life and Times of Alexandr Orlov by Aleksandr Orlov

Herein lies the history of the nation’s favourite meerkat. From escaping the Kalahari desert and enduring a war with Mongis Khan, we learn of how Aleksandr and his family made their name by finding ‘cheep insuranz deels’ for the people of Great Britain. Fully illustrated and hugely entertaining for any Compare the Meerkat fan.

The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy Riley

It’s a hard life being a rabbit, and the long, dark days result in a great many taking their own lives. Always keen to come up with a more memorable way to end it all than their hundreds of siblings, here we see the methods favoured by the likes of Flopsy and Peter. Have tissues at the ready.

1000 Unforgettable Senior Moments by Tom Friedman

Don’t be put off by the fact that the author only managed to remember 246, you still get value for money with this hilarious collection of anecdotes, from when Jimmy Carter left the codes he needed to launch a nuclear missile strike in his suit jacket pocket (at the dry cleaners) to the time Emerson forgot Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s name (at Longfellow’s funeral). It’s nice to know you’re not the only one, isn’t it?

THIS MEANS THAT OIL AND SOLID FUEL APPLIANCES AS WELL AS GAS APPLIANCES PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE GASES AS WELL.

Gas fires and other open flued appliances ( typically older boilers) are at the highest risk as if there is a problem with the flue or chimney the appliance may carry on working, potentially filling living areas with lethal gases. Modern boilers are typically much safer, but should still be serviced annually to make sure that there are no defects and that the appliance is running as efficiently as possible.

Carbon-based fuels are safe to use, it is only when the fuel does not burn properly (usually due to poor installations, or lack of servicing) that excess CO is produced, which is poisonous. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but carbon monoxide can kill quickly without warning. According to the HSE statistics around 20 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated. Dentists...

...who needs them?

T

here is nothing more than bad toothache to make you appreciate a visit to the dentist! As a practice that accepts dental emergencies on a daily basis we appreciate that going to the dentist routinely does not cross the minds of many. In the UK only half the population attend for regular inspections and treatment. For others with problems, when they do need to attend, patients may find it difficult to find a dentist that will accept them for emergency treatment, especially under the NHS. In an emergency, treatment may be more uncomfortable and more costly. Our practices do offer a weekday emergency service to help you in your time of need and you don’t have to be registered. The simple solution is to make

a point to attend regularly. Not only does it reduce the chance of having dental problems but should you do, you will be seen quickly and you will not only have more confidence in your dentist but you will find you can cope a lot easier should you need treatment. As dentists we see many people presenting with lots of different dental conditions so you should never feel embarrassed about any problems you may have. So ...! Get yourself to a dentist. It is not so bad and does not have to be too expensive. In todays perceived recession, regular dental care reduces your costs and saves you money at the end of the day. We see lots of people where costs are perceived to be a limiting factor. No need we tell them!. We explain your needs, any alternatives and related costs and more importantly, how we can help you afford the cost of treatment. By spreading the costs, usually by using our interest free facilities, we can help our patients have the treatment they need now rather than leave their problem to develop further. As an independent dental practice we may appear to charge more for treatment but this is purely to cover the cost

18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

of our time. Where an average NHS practice can see 30 or more patients a day we see a lot less patients allowing us to give our patients more time. More time is handy for those who are anxious..! We can also help anxious patients with our sedation facilities where between our sedation techniques along with hypnosis called “HypnoSed”, we can usually ease any underlying fears that prevent them from carrying through their treatment programme. Our treatments range from day to day dental care to dental implants replacing missing teeth or securing loose dentures, cosmetic procedures including the use of antiwrinkle treatment and dermal fillers to give a more confident improved smile. Our reasonably priced tooth whitening programme allows whiter teeth without the need for more invasive procedures. So do not delay, you will find our dentists and staff friendly and welcoming. Spring Your Clean Garden

With the flowers blooming and new leaves appearing on the trees, April is a time when most of us like to have a bit of a tidy-up and revitalise the garden for summertime.

W

hether you’re preparing for the growing season, or simply wanting to improve the look of your garden, we have some great ideas to give your green space a good spring clean.

Throw out the old plants

Start by removing dead annuals or plants showing any sign of disease, and pull up invading weeds - but don’t add them to your compost bin. Any bulbs which have finished flowering will need deadheading, but don’t remove the leaves as they will provide the energy for next year’s growth. Some shrubby plants with woody stems, such as buddleia and lavender, will need to be pruned in order for new blooms to appear on the freshly-cut branches.

Patios, paths and rough edges

A little touching up here can make the world of difference. Start by trimming overhanging grass from the edges of your patio, pathways and borders, and check to see if any stepping stones have sunk below ground height – if they have, raise them so that loose soil won’t cover them when it rains. Brush off any old leaves from your patio before giving it the once-over with a pressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit of graft, scrub with a specialist path and patio cleaner. Finally, pull out any invasive weeds from the gaps between the patio stones, and lift up encroaching moss.

Bring your grass up to scratch

If all the trudging around in mud hasn’t done your garden any favours, it’s well worth investing in a lawn fertiliser, which will make your grass lovely, thick and green – as well as preventing weeds and moss from forming. If you have a real problem with the latter, find a feeding product which incorporates weed-killer. At this time of year, aeration is also important: you don’t need any flashy equipment – by piercing holes with a pitchfork about 4 inches deep evenly across areas where the lawn is suffering, you’ll improve drainage which will do wonders for the grass.

Treat garden furniture

To prolong the life of your garden furniture, it will need a yearly service to remove any rust spots and prevent against decay. Your wooden furniture will benefit from a good rub down and coating of varnish or teak oil. 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Prepare the soil

If you plan to grow some fruit and veg, purchase a soil-testing kit from your local garden centre. Once you know what kind of earth you’re dealing with, you can improve its quality by adding various nutrients. Beds and vegetable patches will benefit from the removal of stones, twigs and plant debris, a good dig, and the addition of some organic matter such as rotted-down horse manure and a layer of mulch.

Give your pond some life

Start by getting rid of dead leaves, fallen branches and old plants, but don’t throw these – instead, try replanting in new soil. Next, remove the pump, replace the filter and check everything still works properly. If you have any paving slabs, give them a bit of a scrub and tidy back any overhanging plants. Note however that if you have fish, try not to cause too much of a disturbance as they are still in winter mode.

Get growing

The weather is warming up and now is the ideal time to cultivate some seedlings. Start off with some tomatoes, sunflowers, salad leaves and chillies, and place them somewhere warm, ready for the sun when summer comes. Clean all your old pots with a scrubbing brush, re-plant your window boxes and, finally, sit back and enjoy! by Victoria Poolman

Plumbing by Taylor Honesty is the best policy for Stuart Taylor – a plumber who believes in good karma!

S

tuart is a straightforward and ethical tradesman who prefers to do without extra profit rather than charge unfair prices. Stuart said: “I always charge my customers what I’d like to pay myself. If a job has only taken me 20 minutes, I don’t round it up to an hour, I charge for 20 minutes of my time. Often, if fixing something was very straightforward, say it was just a case of tightening a screw, I couldn’t charge for that – I just don’t think it’s fair. “Honesty is the best policy for me; there is no point treating people badly because I believe in karma – what goes around comes around. It makes much more sense to do right by people, because then they do right by you.” No job is too small for Plumbing by Taylor, which specialises in those little plumbing jobs that can often get put off – new taps,

leaky pipes, repairs and replacement toilets, baths or showers. Customers using Stuart’s emergency service still only pay for materials and labour – he doesn’t believe in high call-out charges, in fact he doesn’t charge for call-outs at all! His other main area of expertise is bathroom installations – Plumbing by Taylor can take care of the complete job from start to finish. Stuart takes on the plumbing and tiling himself and organises electricians and plasterers to come in where needed. He is also a trusted contact often called on to fit bathrooms for Bathstore, one of the biggest bathroom companies in the country. Jobs are always tailored to the customer’s budget – and can be done to tight timescales. On two separate occasions Stuart has completed a ‘surprise bathroom’ in record time for customer’s wives while they were on holiday.

Stuart branched out on his own six years ago, setting up Plumbing by Taylor in a big change of direction – he’d previously owned a successful steel company with a turnover of millions. A takeover followed by redundancy and, unfortunately, a heart attack, prompted a rethink in which Stuart decided it was time to shift to a less stressful livelihood and returned to his plumbing roots. He renewed his qualifications as a plumber and, with the view that he should never stop learning and improving, he’s now in training to be a gas fitter. ideas

for your home or garden

A

creative and inexpensive garden revamp can be done well on a tight budget.

Modern wisdom says “don’t move, improve”, but that doesn’t mean putting your dream home on hold. The kind of outdoor space you’ve always wanted to enjoy could be literally on your doorstep. Rock and Stone owner Colin Keast is an experienced landscape gardener and he and his two-man team at their stone display centre in Vertigrow are full of creative ideas for using stone outside – and inside – the home. The firm is renowned for its collection of unusual stoneware – but they’ve also one of the biggest selections of paving, walling, decorative gravel and tiles in the area. Colin said: “I enjoy talking to the customers, and we can always find ways of helping them create what they’re looking for, even when money’s tight.” “For example, instead of having a big paved area, you can use some good quality gravel with the odd paving stone dotted between. Indian stone is reasonably priced but gravel is cheaper, cheaper to lay and can create a really nice effect” Beautiful natural stone can be brought inside the home, too, with a wide selection of quality tiles and fireplace hearths. Everything is sold at trade prices – meaning massive savings can be made on even the smallest pieces. Rock and Stone is the place to find ornaments and gifts for inside the home that will certainly not be found anywhere else – marble wine coolers from the Philippines, for example, or stylish stone sinks to be mounted on a vanity unit in the bathroom. An endless supply of unusual pieces from all over the world include beautiful polished table and bench sets of basalt, granite or teak, fossilised trees, standing stones, traditional stone troughs and elegant statues of all sizes.

tits seem to have moved into Rock and Stone permanently. Children love counting the different types of stone animal – a menagerie of elephants, meerkats, herons, dragons, dogs and cats add up to more than 20 – and there’s a garden centre and cafe on site, too. Browsers are always welcome to explore seven days a week – it’s a great value family afternoon out or stop-off on the way back from a trip to York. Rock and Stone’s trade depot at Elvington is also open to the public every day except Sunday. To get a flavour of what can be discovered, visit the website at www.rockandstoneyork. co.uk, call the depot on 01904 608300 or the display centre at Vertigrow on 01904 400972.

For all your architectural needs

Flooring When you choose new flooring take some time thinking and planning before you buy. Decide what fits your lifestyle and taste.

T

he style of flooring you select depends on many considerations. There are so many different flooring options available that sometimes it can get a bit confusing. A floor covering you choose for a kitchen will not necessarily be suitable for the living room. The most important aspect of your choice is what traffic does the area have? You need a floor covering that doesn’t show wear, will be comfortable and easy to maintain. Well-trodden areas such as hallways need a more durable flooring than, for example, a guest room carpet. The bathroom floor needs to be waterproof. Vinyl tiles or linoleum, warmed up with a rug or two, is ideal. 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Wooden or laminate floors look stylish and are easy to clean, but can be slippery, and while stone tiles look attractive, they can be cold. Carpet is by far the most popular choice and gives an enormous range of textures, colours and styles. Unless you are skilled in doing so, don’t be tempted to lay the floor yourself. For a professional finish, it’s well worth paying someone to fit it.

Orchard Park Preschool

Seedlings

Are you looking for somewhere to take your two year old on a Monday afternoon? Do they need something more than the usual toddler groups but aren’t yet old enough to join the preschool? Why not try Seedlings at Orchard Park Preschool?

Monday 1.30pm - 3pm at Orchard Park Community Centre, Badger Paddock, Huntington

F

or many children, starting in pre-school is their first step towards independence and it can be a daunting experience for both children as well as parents. ‘Seedlings’ was started as a way of helping children aged birth to 3 years old get used to taking part in pre-school life without the stress of being without parents or carers. Orchard Park Preschool has been offering quality child care based in the heart of Huntington since 1967. They are a pro-active community led charity providing a much valued service for families and carers in Huntington and surrounding areas. There are places from age 2 at Orchard Park Pre-School which runs every morning monday to Friday. The children are nurtured and well cared for in a warm, welcoming and relaxed environment. The Pre-School follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum ensuring that

your child learns through play, gains confidence and develops good relationships with other children. Victoria Stroughair, the Pre-School manager says “Many children come to us having never left their safe home environment and need our help to guide them through the transition. Seedling helps with this transition. We provide many of the same toys, games and activities as the pre-school but parents and carers can stay with their children.” Vicky runs Seedlings and is qualified and experienced in childcare and education. she has help from Louise Harrington who is currently studying for childcare qualifications and has also been working at the Pre-School in the mornings. All of the team at Orchard Park attend regular courses to ensure that all of the current legistlation is adhered to. On the day I visited, the children were busy making Valentine’s Day cards. The emphasis at Seedlings is definately on play and a different focus each

week provides opportunities for cooking, music, singing, painting, water play, craft and dressing up. There is also a secure garden area where the children can play with a wide range of outdoor toys. Outings alongside the pre-school children take places throughout the year. “Children can come here and feel happy and relaxed in this environment with their parents or carers on hand to help out if necessary.” The cost is just 50p per week and this includes a mid afternoon snack and a drink. Seedlings runs on Monday afternoons from 1.30pm to 3pm. For more information, please call Sandra on 07407 700315 or 01904 626361.

Pre-school: Mon-Fri 9.15 - 12.15pm Lunch club: Mon-Thu 12.15-1.10pm Funding available for 3 & 4 years the term after their 3rd birthday

Five Big Cool

French Cars T

here’s something about big French cars that’s rather cool. They are not usually huge sales hits in the UK, but a combination of quirky styling and laid back comfort make them attractive buys. There are some things you’ll have to put up with: Some have residual values that lose money faster than Greece, reliability can be slightly disappointing and some people will laugh at you. But not us – we’ll salute you as you waft by with a whiff of diesel, floating along on a bed of air suspension. Here, we pick our four favourites.

Citroen DS Big French cars don’t get more iconic than the incredible DS. Citroen sold nearly 1.5m of them during its 20-year production run between 1955 and 1975. It was packed with futuristic technology such as self-leveling suspension and directional headlights, but it’s those stylish looks that make it really cool. A decent DS will cost you around £30k now.

Renault Vel Satis The Vel Satis was an undeniable sales flop – even Renault’s top brass admit it (http:// aol.it/eUQ9mt) – but that, in our eyes, makes it even more desirable. At launch its price put a lot of people off, but we think the unique design, spacious interior and silky diesel engine make it a worthwhile purchase. And the fact you can pick them up for just £2k now makes them very attractive!

Citroen SM Citroen has a habit of producing wacky cars, so when it teamed up with Maserati to build the SM in 1970, the result was always going to be bonkers. The SM didn’t only look amazing but was packed with tech, including speed-sensitive steering and directional 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

headlights. Maserati took care of the engine, slotting a V6 unit under the bonnet, and the French firm sorted the styling – the collaboration resulted in the creation of a classic.

Renault Alpine A610 Attempting to take on the Porsche 944 with a plastic-bodied Renault was, in hindsight, never going to be a success. But that doesn’t mean the Alpine A160, launched in 1991, isn’t cool. It’s got all the right ingredients – a 250bhp turbo-charged lump positioned in the back, rearwheel drive and sleek looks. Add the fact it had a habit of snapping like a breadstick on the limit and, in our eyes, it’s even more appealing.

Citroen C6 Here’s a classic in the making. Well, at least that’s what we reckon. The C6 has all the hallmarks of a future appreciator: Mental looks, sublime comfort and the usual amount of specification marvels including double-glazing, head-up display and clever suspension. But what we really love about the C6 is the looks – the dramatic nose and unique rear mark it out against German rivals and makes buying one a real statement.

A cleaner clean W aterless car cleaning? It hardly seems possible, does it? After all, surely nothing gets a car cleaner than good old soap and water.

But washing your car the traditional way is not only less efficient, it’s also harmful to the environment. Every time you clean your car at home you use about 50–60 litres of water. This means if you wash your car regularly throughout the year it could add up to 500 – 600 litres a year. And you’re also sending contaminated soap waste and oil residues down the drain which will ultimately affect the water table, foul the waterways and harm wildlife. The Waterless Cleaning System is based on scientific principles and is proven to be extremely gentle to your car’s body finish. So how does it work? Here comes the science part. Grit and grime

attach to the body paint surface by ionic bonds at the molecular level. The unique scientifically engineered waterless cleaning system unlocks these bonds by a process known as emulsification. As soon as they are unlocked, the dirt and grit gently float away on a liquid cushion and are wiped away with micro fibre towels without damaging the paint surface. Light buffing then brings out a brilliant waxed shine. This revolutionary system also includes Advanced Cross Linked Polymers that bond to the paint finish actually repelling grit and grime. Special UV inhibitors also protect the paint finish from the damaging rays of the sun.

your pride and joy. And if their customers’ comments are anything to go by, the method certainly works. ‘’It is the best valet I have ever had,” says Marie Jackson. “My car looks better now than it did when I bought it. The people who have seen my car thought I had a new one!’’ Another satisfied customer writes, ‘’I have just used Grafters Car Valeting and cannot state highly enough how massively impressed I have been. They were preparing my current car for sale and have done such a great job that if I had not ordered my new one already, I may well have been tempted to keep it – the results are really that good.” Grafters Waterless Car Valeting offers a range of valeting options to suit your individual needs. Vanilla Cupcakes Easter

01904 468777

Young people of all ages love baking especially at Easter. Try these delicious vanilla cupcakes and decorate them with an Easter theme. The cupcake frills in the photo can be bought at most supermarkets and will make your cupcakes look extra special! Ingredients (makes 12) 225g caster sugar 110g unsalted butter, softened at room temperature 3 medium eggs 150g self raising flour 125g plain flour 120ml milk 1 vanilla pod, split in two lengthways

Buttercream icing

110g unsalted butter softened, at room temperature 60ml milk, at room temperature 1 teaspoon good quality vanilla extract 500g icing sugar, sifted

Method 1. Put the milk in a small pan with the vanilla pod and bring to the boil. Immediately remove from the heat and leave to infuse until it reaches room temperature. Remove the vanilla pod and using the tip of a knife scrape the seeds out and return them to the milk. 2. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas mark 4. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with cupcake cases. 3. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy using an electric hand mixer. Add the eggs, one at a time beating well after each one. 4. Mix the two flours. Create a smooth batter by adding the flours and vanilla infused milk, gradually in two or three stages beating well. 5. Alternatively for speed but not half as much fun - put all the ingredients into a food processor and whiz until you have a cake batter. 6. Spoon the mixture evenly into the cases. Bake for 25 minutes until cooked and golden brown and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

7. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes or so before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. 8. While the cupcakes are cooling make the icing – using an electric hand mixer, mix the butter, milk, vanilla extract and half the icing sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually add the rest of the icing sugar until you have a thick creamy icing. 9. When the cupcakes are completely cold ice and decorate with your choice of Easter decoration – I like mini chocolate eggs and sprinkles, or choose from the wide selection of cake decorations available or use small sweets. You can of course colour the icing too – add a drop at a time of your chosen food colouring to build the colour gradually. 10. A note for any young people attempting these cupcakes – don’t forget to do the washing up and leave the kitchen tidy! 

TRAVEL

Sunset on

Everest

You have to earn your first view of the mighty Everest range.

F

rom the Lukla airstrip, a short flight from Kathmandu, it takes a day and a half, trekking through pine forests, past lodges framed in dahlias and rhododendrons, across dizzying bridges and up the long steep spur of the Namche Hill. Now and then, you flatten yourself against the cliff face to let pack animals and porters scrape past. Far below, the foaming waters of the Bhote Kosi roar through an invisible gorge. At last, the pretty Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar appears, clinging to the very edge of the precipice, all pastel roofs and frilly awnings, prayer flags wavering like giant plumes and stepped alleyways where men carve Buddhist scriptures on the boulders and trekkers bargain for turquoise and Tibetan rugs. At 3340 metres, in the Everest National Park, Namche is the place to acclimatise for a day or two and enjoy glorious mountain views, here the holy summit of Khumbila, there the fluted walls of Thamserku or the snowfields of Kongde and on the horizon, the dark windswept cone of Everest. Spring is the best time for rhododendrons, autumn for 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

clear views. From Namche, Bazaar, it is a fairly easy stretch to Tengboche, the most sacred monastery in the Khumbu region, perched all alone on a wooded ridge. Boy monks scrub their laundry at the gate, chanting drifts from the temple, punctuated by cymbals and drums, and the twin peaks of Ama Dablam rise hauntingly, so close you could almost touch them. Beyond, the land is bleak and you pass only a few hamlets with tiny potato fields and yak dung drying for fuel on stone walls. Sometimes, wild Himalayan goats bound on the slopes and pheasants in iridescent rainbow colours peck on the edge of the trail. Onto the forlorn village of Dingboche then Lobuche, past myriad stone chortens lined up on the pass, each one a shrine to someone who died in these parts. Now it is high time to eat garlic soup to thin the blood and fill up on energy food, pancakes, potato bread, vegetable rolls the size of a family pie. After a week of toiling up and down slopes and one last scramble over a moraine, anyone reasonably fit can reach Gorak Shep, the original base

camp at over 5000 metres, now with a few lodges, tucked in a moonscape of tortured land and ice with gaping crevasses and the great cascade of the Khumbu Icefall. Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Choyu, mountains rise in a magnificent amphitheatre across the Tibetan border, but Everest remains stubbornly out of sight, hidden by a lower but closer ridge. So, to set eyes on the panorama of a lifetime, you have to climb even higher and tackle the seemingly easy but breathtaking, knee-jerking Kalapatar, the Black Rock above Gorak Shep, towering at 5623 metres. Slowly, Everest appears above Nuptse, rising higher and higher, and when the sun dips in the west, the whole mountain rumbles and groans as huge blocks of ice crash down the slopes. All around the peaks come to life, shimmering pink and gold in the dying light. Suddenly, sharp as a knife, darkness falls right across the land but for a long time, on the roof of the world, Everest continues to glow, a lonely beacon in a starlit sky. By Solange Hando

Poultry

T

Keeping chickens has certainly become very popular in recent years and with good reason, nothing can beat your own home produce, from the point of view of the welfare of the birds and the delicious taste of fresh eggs.

here is a wonderful variety of poultry out there to choose from which in turn produce eggs of different size and even colour. Indeed people become very attached to their birds, which is no surprise given our title of being a nation of animal lovers and we regularly see birds at the practice.

If you are planning to keep hens for the first time do your research first, and talk to people who are experienced in keeping poultry to get advice. You can also visit www.poultryclub. org for all sorts of information from breeds to housing and www.birdwelfarestrategy.org. uk for your legal obligations when keeping birds (for good welfare). On a serious note, if there were an outbreak of avian influenza in the U.K., birds would have to be housed to keep them separate from wild birds, check www.defra.gov.uk for updates.

A lot of the reasons we see chickens at the practice relates to the management of small flocks so I’ll summarise a few key points below: 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Always provide plenty of fresh clean water

Use good quality layer pellets from a reputable source: if birds have access to grass they will have enough green stuff otherwise this may need to be supplemented. Avoid giving kitchen scraps because of the risk of salmonella and giving the birds an unbalanced diet. Move houses with runs frequently so the birds always have access to clean well drained grass. Gravel or wood chips (not bark chips) can be placed by entrances to static houses to keep feet clean. Birds enjoy some environmental enrichment in the form of trees or shrubs which also provide shade.

Worm twice a year if truly free range, more frequently if kept in a small area. Please call us for advice on wormers as products vary in efficacy! Manufacturers do now produce wormers in sizes appropriate for small flocks, to mix in feed and give over 7 days (adding a little vegetable oil to the pellets helps powders to stick).

Keep a medicines book to record any medicines given to the birds, including worming, and be aware that there may be a withdrawal time during which its inadvisable to eat the eggs.

Quarantine new birds before introducing them to your flock in case they carry any diseases and be careful where you source your birds from.

Signs of good health include dry nostrils, a clean vent and feathers and a healthy colour comb (the colour can vary according to breed).

Use a good quality disinfectant (ask us for recommendations) to clean housing and if using second hand housing disinfect thoroughly, including all the nooks and crannies – taking the house apart may be necessary.

Prompt treatment of a bird that appears to be unwell will maximise their chances of recovery and minimise the risks to other birds. Enjoy watching your birds and those wonderfully tasty eggs! Lucy Nowell, Station House Vets

Other long-stay ladies include Ellie, the naughty tortie who needs plenty of play-time and toys and our much publicised Freya who has been with us since September! If you think you could offer Poppy, Ellie, Freya or any of our other cats a home please call the centre on 01904 760356.

Poppy has been with us for some time now as when she first came to us she had a medical issue concerning her eye. After some initial basic treatment Poppy was re-homed almost as good as new and ready for a fresh start. Sadly Poppy’s eye drops proved too difficult for her new owner and she ended up back at the centre. On returning Poppy received extra treatment for her eye and underwent an operation. Happily all seems well with her eye and she shouldn’t require any further treatment at the present - so now it’s time for a new home! Poppy would like to be the only cat in the house and wouldn’t be suitable with dogs or young children. She would like someone who will keep her luscious fur in tiptop condition and give her the love and attention she deserves. She purrs like a train and loves curling up on knees and drifting off to sleep. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 53

BUSINESS

The Power of

Networking H undreds of people get up at the crack of dawn in the morning to do it, others wait until lunchtime while yet more people do it in the evening or online. What is it? Networking. From business breakfasts to wine bar soirées, people all over the country are networking together, making new contacts and expanding the contents of their address books.

You’ll know a great networker when you meet one. They are the first people to shout “I do!” when they overhear someone asking “does anyone know of a good plumber?”, or asking for a great painter and decorator or a good restaurant to take their elderly parents to. Good networkers listen and they learn, making a mental note of people who they like and who they would like to stay in touch with. They are the Cilla Blacks of the business world, connecting people who may be able to help each other or who they think may have a common interest or bond. From plumbers to printers, solicitors to accountants good networking benefits people in every sector and in every size of company. Done effectively it’s not just about randomly passing out your business cards, rather it’s about face to face contact, about actively listening and about asking the right questions about another person’s business. Effective networking offers you exposure to people from all walks of life, to all sorts of businesses and it gets your name out into the business community. Organised networking groups exist all over the country and offer their members benefits on many levels. Going along to visit a group can be a great way for people to dip their toes in the water of meeting and greeting new people. Existing members will usually watch out for new faces and step in to help anyone who is standing by themselves with introductions to other members of the group. Networking doesn’t come naturally to some people and a structured environment can help with any first time nerves. For home based businesses the opportunity to get out of the office once a week and meet with other people can be a source of huge support; for others membership can offer a co-operative

where the other members act almost like a larger company behind each individual member. Sole traders and self employed members especially can call upon the services of the members of their groups and find themselves with, for example, a design department, an accounts department, an IT department and a marketing department whose work they understand and trust because they meet the same people each week. Highly successful and lucrative groups tend to work very well when members from particular sectors join and work together, for example when a printer passes work to a designer, a builder to a plumber, decorator and carpet fitter. In recent years networking has moved beyond the breakfast table or the wine bar to the online world with sites like LinkedIn and Twitter spreading the word of individual businesses far beyond the confines of town and county. The basis of this virtual networking is based upon the same principles as face-to-face meetings: it’s about finding people with whom you have things in common, about shared interests or bonds and adding them to your network of contacts. Networking - it’s not what you know, but who.

Are your business records up to scratch?

by Andrew Walker, White Kite Chartered Accountants

About 50,000 businesses will have been asked this question in a letter from the Taxman over the last month. There is concern at HMRC that inadequate records are being kept by businesses to support the entries in their tax returns. To help businesses a new online checker has been provided that will assess the standard of your records. It can be found at www.businesslink. gov.uk/recordkeepingcheck There is a lot of jargon in the checker and your answers may produce a number of warnings. If you have concerns then you should speak to your accountant. 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

tax and ISA’s.

As well as providing help the Taxman is reminding businesses that they may receive a visit from the Tax Office Compliance Check Unit. This should only affect a small number of businesses and visits should be arranged in advance. If you do receive a visit and your records are found to be inadequate then you may receive a penalty of up to £3,000.
