Natural wellbeing in the historical spa town

I

n Hanko you can breathe fresh sea air. The days are characterized by the closeness to the sea and you wake up to the sound of the sea and the rhythm of the waves licking the beach. The town on the southernmost peninsula of our country is surrounded by sea in three directions. The historical spa life in Hanko belongs to the most mythical and beloved periods in the history of the town. Hanko is so strongly associated with spa life that the glamorous picture has survived a break of several decades. Hanko is once again becoming a spa town after a break of 80 years when Hanko Sea Bath opens on Tehtaanniemi in 2017. Outside the summer season Hanko is captivating as well as unique. The outer archipelago offers a mixture of silence and intense experiences; the wild force of the autumn storms and the calm of a small town offers room for recovery and creativity. Spending time in nature makes us feel well and affects our health in a positive way; already 20 minutes in nature lowers our blood pressure and slows down our pulse. Enjoy nature: the forest, the sea and the beaches. The longer you spend in nature, the better you feel.

The charm of the historical spa town

The happy and sociable Dorrit Kurtén (1911–95) from Helsinki was one of the young ladies living the good life in the spa town in the 1930s. The carefree days were spent with tennis and beach life. Naturally, dance and glamorous social events were also part of the Hanko lifestyle.

”I feel deep pride and joy to be able to represent a bridge between the past and modern times. We need something soft, eternal and authentic between the world and man, something that is almost an adventure, but an experience at the least. In the words of Eeva Kilpi: “When the youngest bride dances, the old world will smile.” We say: When the oldest bride dances, we will all have a chance. And the old world dances along, as an important part of the newly created, hand in hand with the youngsters. We are not a hotel, simply a B&B we cannot be, so let us be a pension.”

Mira Haahti Fourth generation pension keeper Pension Tellina Thalatta

Villa Tellina is is one of the oldest and finest villas in the Hanko Spa Park, built around 1880. Villa Tellina and Villa Thalatta (1893–94) are an extremely valuable architectural and environmental part of the Spa Park villa area.

A roadtrip to the south of Finland G

o on an adventure, follow the Finnish map as far south as you can get along the Finnish mainland; the last stretch is a narrow strip of land, a very special peninsula surrounded by the sea. Explore and pack for new experiences, and dress for spending time outdoors. Salty sea baths on the beach, lazy days on the terrace, autumn strolls, and picnics in the warm spring sun. In Hanko most things happen outdoors; in summer as well as winter we are lured towards the magical sea. You can choose between coming along the main road, taking the train or coming by bike. Or do what an old salt would do: take the boat to Hanko. However you decide to come, please use public transport or share rides when possible. The greener the better. PS. The last stretch of 3,3 km along the Tulliniemi nature trail out to the southernmost point of Finland you must walk by foot.

”Today started my second week of vacation in this small seaside town… days are rather same yet they pass by so fast: first peaceful breakfast, then hour or two walking or running with the dog, reading books, swimming, taking pics, eating well and suddenly it's evening. I could do this for a few weeks…”

Amuse yourself in the water carousel. Both children and adults can amuse themselves in the water carousel at the Plagen Beach. The water carousel in Hanko is unique and has spread joy for many generations.

Visit the House of the Four Winds. The House of the Four Winds is a must if you visit Hanko. The café, which was first called Café Lilla Tallholmen (“Little Pine Island”), has had several owners. Historically the most interesting one is C.G.E. Mannerheim. His summer cottage was situated on Stora Tallholmen (“Large Pine Island”). During the prohibition era (1919–1932) the cafe was called Cafe Africa, and they served so called “hard tea”. The happy and wild life in the café disturbed Mannerheim and for this reason he bought it in 1927. Mannerheim changed the name of the café to The House of the Four Winds.

What was life like at the Hanko Front Line?

A R S   *

T

he Hanko Front Museum is situated where the defence fortifications crossed the Hanko peninsula during the Second World War. The Front Museum, which was founded in 1987, will reopen again in June 2017, having been completely renovated. The new permanent exhibition focuses on the situation at the Hanko front line, during the years 1939–41, when Hanko was occupied by the Soviet Union. The exhibition shows the circumstances at the front line. Everyday life in both the Finnish and the Russian civil communities is presented. Women in particular played a very significant role in maintaining the structures of society. All citizens were affected by the war. The exhibition will also present the many volunteers from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, who participated in the retaking of Hanko to Finland in 1941. The Front Museum is situated in authentic surroundings, exactly where the front line was back in 1941. In the terrain, you still find traces from the war, which are presented along the so called “War Path”. The Hanko Front Museum presents the war history of Finland, and the background to our independence. More information: www.frontmuseum.fi

ulliniemi in Hanko is a unique and enchanting experience, regardless of the season. The beaches on the narrow cape entice us; we walk by the sea, admire the horizon, look out for birds, immortalise the windswept pine trees – we enjoy the supremacy of the sea and the wind. The Tulliniemi nature trail on the northern beach will lead you to the outer archipelago, to the southernmost point of Finland, where the Archipelago Sea and the Gulf of Finland meet. The south point is an excellent destination for day trips all year round: You will find a breathtaking view over the sea and a sunset that will entice you to return time after time.

The southern beach, Tulliranta, is known for its beautiful nature as well as for its excellent conditions for water sports. This is one of the rare, easily reachable beaches in Finland where you can wave surf. It takes a powerful storm and a southernly or southeastly wind to create breaking waves on this beach.

H

anko is once again becoming a spa town after a break of 80 years. Hanko Sea Bath is located on Tehtaanniemi with a view over the sea horizon. Here you can enjoy the good life: the wonderful maritime environment, swimming in the swimming pool and relaxing spa treatments. The historical spa life in Hanko belongs to the most mythical and beloved periods in the history of the town. Hanko is so strongly associated with spa life that the glamorous picture has survived a break of several decades. The country’s most fashionable spa was called Hanko Spa up until the first world war. This was a time characterised by health bathing in the public baths. During the 1920s and the 1930s sunbathing became more and more popular, and this time is perhaps most strongly linked to the romantic picture of carefree spa and holiday life in Hanko.

Hanko Spa started operating in 1879 as a sanatorium with gymnastics facilities. The baths were mainly in the warm spa house. They were health baths, prescribed by doctors of the establishment. Among the treatments were half bath, hip bath, vapour bath, wrapping, pineneedle bath, mud massage bath, electric bath, carbon dioxide bath and physiotherapy. The number of baths during the day varied from one to three. The morning bath was the most important. In 1895 a six-week stay in Hanko, all-inclusive, cost 240–480 mk, i.e. 1200–2400 euros in today’s money. Beach bathing in its modern form had its breakthrough in Hanko in the 1920s, when the mixed baths were introduced to the place by Doctor Dodo Rancken. The common beach bathing culture for men and women spread rapidly from Hanko to Mariehamn, Fäboda, Drumsö, Terijoki and Naantali. Hanko Spa flourished during the beautiful summers of the 1930s with an audience enjoying themselves in a princely manner. The spa itself, which had been the framework for the spa life, was no longer the main focus, when Hanko became more of a holiday resort. The summer of 1939 was the last in the history of the spa. During the Second World War the spa building was damaged by bombings and it was demolished in 1945 after the war. Hanko Spa operated in Hanko 1879–1939.

”In summertime Hanko is a center for the elegant and fashionable world in Finland. There is a buzzing beach life in continental style on the sunbaked beaches: sunburnt bodies, light beach outfits and colourful beach parasols gives the picture colourful tones, while the air is reverberated by glam and noise from the water slide and the happy youth, splashing around in the emerald green, crystal clear water.”  – Translated from the brochure Hangö-Bad i Finland, 1930s

ake a trip to the outer archipelago and see the seals of the Baltic in their natural habitat. In the whole Baltic there are today about 30 000 grey seals. With a bit of luck you can spot this large seal species close up. On our seal safaris we are able to follow the seals from the cruise boat, but try to avoid disturbing them. The social grey seals tend to gather on the rocks. The main food of the seals is fish and the grey seal is an omnivore when it comes to fish. On average, it dives to a depth of 25 metres and a dive tends to take less than ten minutes. In our part of the Baltic there are two seal species: Except for the grey seal, there is also the ringed seal swimming in our waters. The Baltic ring seal is much rarer and the species is considered vulnerable. This species, the smallest seal species in the world, is rarely spotted in Hanko. The ringed seal lives in open sea, but can be encountered in the outer archipelago. The species has been decimated due to hunting and pollution and the number has not recovered in our waters, despite the protective measures taken. Did you know that a fully grown grey seal can be up to two metres long and weigh 300 kg!

“I’ll never forget my first look at the sea. The sea breeze, shimmer of the midday sun as it hits the water, murmur of the waves and rustle of the leaves – everything just made me want to drop my backpack and run into the Baltic, with its milky-aquamarine waters and foamy wavelets. Except that I knew it would have been far too cold.”

During 1880–1930 nearly 400 000 Finns emigrated to North America and Australia, most of them via Hanko. There are several sights and buildings from this era in Hanko. • The emigrants’ hotel and office, The New Emigrants’ hotel with accommodation capacity for 300 people was built by the Finland Steamship Company Ltd. The emigration office and a bank were situated next to the hotel. Bulevardi 15. • The Russian emigrants´ hotel, Nycanderinkatu 10 • Butter Warehouse, Western Harbour. The emigrants travelled on the terms of butter and departed from the Western Harbour. The Hanko-Hull line became the main emigrant route; from Hull the emigrants continued by train to Liverpool or Southampton. The fastest trip from Hanko to New York would last 2–3 weeks. • The Emigrant Cliffs, in the Spa Park. While awaiting the ship the young emigrants would dance on the smooth cliffs in the Spa Park, usually someone always had an accordion. The cliffs are still called the Emigrant cliffs.

Ilmari Wirkkala and Leonard Savola (Granit) and made by sculptor Bertel Nilsson. When the citizens of Hanko returned after the area’s Soviet control in 1940–41, the monument had been removed. Since 1960 the monument has been re-erected and is situated by the sea at the end of the street Bulevardi.

The fortification of Hanko The cape of Hanko and the surrounding area has always been an important military object. The Swedish military built field armaments here already in the 18th century. In the 19th century field fortification was built on the mainland as well as on the islands to prevent the enemy from passing the cape of Hanko. Three islands in front of Kuningattarenvuori formed a suitable triangle surrounding the existing sea routes and perfect for crossfire. The islands of Gustavsvärn, Gustaf Adolf, Mejerfelt and Kuningattarenvuori were fortified. Overall, the armaments had a garrison of 500 soldiers. In the northern dale of Kuningattarenvuori, a 200-250 residents’ “fort city” emerged, called the garrison of Kuningattarenvuori. Summertime cruises depart to the island of Gustavsvärn where you can still see the ruins of this fortification. Hanko – a soviet naval base The whole cape of Hanko was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base for 30 years after the peace treaty of Moscow which ended the Winter War in 1940. The Soviet Union brought a garrison of 30,000 men to Hanko, and the Soviets did extensive building in Hanko. Eventually Soviet troops were forced to evacuate Hanko in early

Sights connected to 1940–41: • Light coastal battery, Puistovuoret and Varisniemi • Anti-aircraft battery, Kansanpuisto • Tulliniemi barracks. The beaches in Tulliniemi had strong beach defense areas constructed on both sides, equipped with mines and barriers as well as firing stations that lined the beach with regular and light machine guns. When the Russians had left the Hanko peninsula base in December 1941, Finland and Germany decided to move the holiday transportation of the northern German troops to Hanko in the spring of 1942. To facilitate this, a separate passenger traffic train line was built to Tulliniemi as well as a village for the vacationers comprising more than 100 barracks. • The Soviet Monument, Täktomintie. 453 Soviet soldiers are buried close to the monument, 267 of them are unidentified. They were killed in action during the Continuation War. • The Monument of Pioneers, Santalan Kartanontie • The Hanko Front Museum More information in English: www.hangonsotahistoria.fi
