Editorial Welcome to the second opportunities brochure. At first we would like to introduce ourselves. We are four EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteers that now are living and working in Cluj-Napoca. We are from four different countries: Katharina from Austria, Hanna from Belarus, Janno from Estonia and Ieva from Latvia. We are working in the project „Youth 4 community“. Youth 4 community is a project of the “Support for Youth Development” Association (S4YD). The association was founded on 17th of December 2009 in Cluj-Napoca, being an NGO entirely dedicated to youth development. The goal of our association is to stimulate and support the active, civic and responsible participation of the young generation within the social, educational, cultural and economic aspects of the communities they live in. We are making this brochure for you as a tool which you can use searching for different opportunities to take in your life. We believe that even though this brochure can’t hold all the possibilities that you can have, still it can be a nice way how to start your journey to a more active and meaningful life. At the end of the brochure you can find our contact details in case you have any suggestions or questions. We will be staying here till first of May, 2013 so you will definitely have a chance to meet us in workshops, cultural events or just to hang out if you wish. We are here for you. Go through the pages and enjoy! Have a nice December!

3

On the pages of our brochure you will find quite often the opportunities to volunteer: for short-term or long-term projects, for an institution or an NGO. And we promise you, that this is going to be a really exciting experience in your life, whatever you’ll do. In our second brochure you again can find a volunteer of the month, a “superhero”, a person who just lives around and does amazing things. This December we will introduce you Bogdan Romanică, the president of „Dreams for Life“ Association and one of the best trainers we have ever met. Read the interview with him and find out how volunteering and passion go hand in hand.

Volunteer Of The Month How and when did you start to do volunteer work? What was your main motivation? I started volunteering in 2005, when I came to Cluj-Napoca to study. The first organization in which I was involved is COS (Consortiul Organizatiilor Studentesti). It was a big organization at that time and I was involved in a big project Luna Studentului Clujean (The Month of the Student). I helped with everything: promotion, logistics, and events. Ahh, it was a nice time. I was very motivated. Some of my friends told me that I was too motivated, but that was good, I had a lot of energy. I wanted to do something more: to meet new people, to learn and gain experience from many fields, to have fun, to make new friends and also to give something to the community, especially the student‘s community. But the main motivation was learning. I wanted to learn how to do things.

Tell us about your EVS experience in Netherlands. Hmmm, that was something really awesome. In 2010, I was in Netherlands for 7 months at an international youth organization called Atlantic Bridge. That was the place where I found myself; I’ve got to discover my talents, my passions and my calling. I was working in youth clubs and schools with teenagers trying to build bridges of understanding and friendship between them, because they were coming from different social backgrounds. We used non-formal education methods, and thus I developed a >> p. 6 5

<< p. 5 strong passion for education. It was not always easy, I had hard times too. Cultural shock, some conflicts with different colleagues, but these were the things that helped me a lot to become a better person. Thanks to EVS I am a stronger person, ambitious, more flexible and I have the courage to follow my dreams.

You have made voluntary work in Africa. What did you do there? Was it a challenge? I was in Africa in February 2012, in Togo. I was there for 3 weeks, for an international youth exchange. The name of the project was Art Fusion and the idea of it was to bring together youth from Togo, Ghana, Romania and Slovenia. Its aim was to make a fusion using the artistic backgrounds of all the participants. The exchange had three parts: the first was focused on global education, the second on social theater and the last part, and the longest one, on music. I really enjoyed the training on global education. It opened my mind so much! Now I understand better how this world is and the way we are connected. At the end of the exchange we performed a concert, with dances and music, in the community where we lived for few days. It was amazing. About challenges? Oh yes, we had many: the climate, the language, the social behaviors, the food, and the differences between our groups. But this is the charm of this kind of experiences, and for sure, there I had the best days of my life.

6

Volunteer Of The Month You are founder and president of the non-governmental organisation „Dreams for Life”. Could you tell us where the idea of founding the association came? Who supported you? The idea came to my mind during my EVS. I was so sad about the situation in Romania and I was thinking what I can do to change something. I discovered my passion for education and then I realized that the best way you can change something is through education of young people. They are the present and the future of the country. If the people are smart and well prepared, the country will be well prepared. I was inspired by “I have a dream” of Martin Luther King and I was thinking that the youth can get involved much easier if it’s about their dreams, about their passions. I didn’t get a lot of support, but I got as much as I needed to go on. You don’t need somebody behind you to tell you “You can do it!” or to give you money for every single action. You need just some positive feedback from time to time. You need small signs through which you understand that you are doing the right things and that the world needs you. >> p. 8

7

Volunteer Of The Month << p. 7

Volunteering is action, action is experience. Why should the youngsters do voluntary work? Volunteering is education and it is maybe the best form of education. There are researches that say people best learn when they are active and teach others what they know. Everybody should volunteer because thus we have more chances to fulfill our different needs: the social needs - we can meet new people and create new relationships, the mental needs - we can learn new things, discuss new subjects, discover new perspectives, the spiritual needs - we can contribute to this world, we can leave a legacy and reach fulfillment. So, let’s volunteer.

EVS: Best Volunteering Programme What is EVS? Is it real for you? Let’s try to figure it out together. Just answer a few questions for yourself and see if it suits you. yy Are you aged between 16 and 30? yy Do you have some free time (2 weeks – 12 months) or just want to make a break between studies/work? yy Do you want to discover a new country, language, people, culture and be useful for the local community? yy Are you open for new priceless experiences?

If your answers to all these questions are positive, you should do your EVS! Some useful tips for you now: yy EVS or European Voluntary Service (in Romanian - SEV, Serviciul European de Voluntariat) is an action in the frame of Youth in Action Programme by European Commission. yy You can become a volunteer and do your EVS in different countries (EU and not only), with all the expences (accommodation, food, pocket money, work expences, insurance, 90% of transportation) covered by the project. yy All you should do is to find an interesting project according to the country or topic on the database (http://bit.ly/evsdatabase), send your CV and motivation, find a sending organization (S4YD can be one), prepare and apply! Language classes: Latvian. Starting with first of November we, four EVS volunteers in S4YD, are teaching our native languages to the youngsters in Cluj. We are teaching Estonian, Latvian, Belarusian and German. I am a Latvian language teacher and I enjoy a lot preparing and giving the classes. I just love it. I lived in Spain for 1.5 years and there I gave classes of Basic English and Russian languages. Last year in Latvia I taught some Spanish but now this is my first time of teaching Latvian.

44

Activities of Youth 4 Community I would say that it is even more challenging to explain rules, exceptions and ways of expressing in the language in which I have been fluent from the first time I started talking. It is a lot easier to teach something the same way as somebody else taught you especially when it concerns the grammar. For me it is very surprising how much Romanian people are interested in learning new languages. I have taught already basic phrases, countries, some grammar, numbers and colours to my students. I am trying my best to make the classes interactive and fun because the least my students need are boring classes after or before having a long work day. That’s why they not only study Latvian language but also explore some aspects of Latvian culture like music, cartoons, food, etc. After the first six classes I am giving a test to my students and I feel very excited about how they will manage to do the exercises. I am sure they will make me proud. :-)
