Editorial Greetings to everyone in April! Hopefully the spring will finally come and inspire all of us to start new activities and take new challenges. Who are we? We are four EVS (European Voluntary Service), volunteers that now are living and working in Cluj-Napoca. We are from four different countries: Katharina from Austria, Hanna from Belarus, Janno from Estonia and Ieva from Latvia. We are working in the project Youth 4 Community. Youth 4 Community is a project of the “Support for Youth Development Association (S4YD). The association was founded on 17th of December 2009 in Cluj-Napoca, being an NGO entirely dedicated to youth development. The goal of the association is to stimulate and support the active, civic and responsible participation of the young generation within the social, educational, cultural and economic aspects of the communities they live in. This brochure is a tool that you can use searching for different opportunities that you can take in life. We believe that even though this brochure can’t hold all the possibilities that you can have; still, it can be a nice way how to start your journey to a more active and meaningful life. At the end of the brochure you can find our contact details in case you have any suggestions or questions. We hope that the brochure will be useful for you! Go through the pages, find your opportunity and have a great April! Yours: Hanna, Janno, Katharina and Ieva

On the pages of our brochure you will find quite often the opportunities to volunteer: for short-term or long-term projects, for an institution or an NGO. And we promise you, that this is going to be a really exciting experience in your life, whatever you’ll do. Also in this brochure you can find a volunteer of the month, a “superhero”, a person who just lives around and does amazing things. This April we will introduce you Camilla Rooney: My name is Camilla Rooney and I am an English girl living and working in Cluj-Napoca. I work as a primary school teacher at Transylvania College International School and also voluntarily organise educational projects and events with the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography. Before living in Romania I lived in Hanoi, Vietnam and Budapest, Hungary. On the 23 and 24 March I organised a Storytelling Festival at the museum called Festivalul Povestilor din Transilvania. We had around 500 visitors, with 69 participants from 20 different organisations. The event was supported by 18 volunteers and co4

Volunteer Of The Month organised by LĂŠa Orain, a French EVS volunteer from Centrul de Voluntariat. We hope that next year there will be another edition of Festival Povestilor, even bigger and better than this year!

What is your experience as a volunteer and how did you get started? I think that ever since I volunteered myself to be a school-lunch monitor when I was 7 years old, volunteering has just been in my nature. Usually I want to get myself involved in things, probably because I am a bit bossy! It has extended into my adult life; I usually have some project or idea brewing and as soon as it finishes I move on to the next one. It’s an addiction! Although I have never been part of an official volunteer programme, since moving to Cluj-Napoca a year ago I have been working really closely with Centrul de Voluntariat who are, in my opinion, a staggeringly open-minded and welcoming organisation. They have given me all the support I could ever need, and during this recent storytelling festival even said that I was an honorary volunteer. It makes me feel really happy to be a part of their community.

Why did you choose to come to Romania? In 2009 I was living in Budapest with my boyfriend and we suddenly decided to leave the city on the spur of the moment. We packed up our worldly possessions and hitchhiked to Romania. >> p. 6 5

<< p. 5 Apart from the fact that it was big and near Hungary, we didn’t have a clue what it was like. We ended up living with a Hungarian dancer who was married to a blind Belgian gypsy violinist in their house in the foothills on the Apuseni Mountains. We spent a month making Palinka, making Zacuscă on a traditional open fire, scything hay and riding around on horse-drawn carts. By the end of the month we were totally in love with Romania and moved here permanently the first chance we got.

With you being the main organizer, how did the Storytelling Festival start? I wanted to create a way of bringing a lot of children and families into the museum, to fill it with life, energy and noise. So I was trying to think of some kind of theme to base an event round, something that had both elements of traditional culture but also something that could be interesting and exciting for contemporary audiences. I hit upon the idea of Storytelling and it was perfect from the start. Storytelling is an entertainment that will never go out of fashion; it has a timeless power to capture the attention of audiences whatever the age or background. At first I thought, ‘How can I organise a Storytelling Festival in Cluj, someone with no background in traditional Romanian stories.’ I had a lot of doubt about it. But someone said to me, ‘You have the idea and that is the main thing.’ I thought to myself, ‘If I don’t do this, it will never happen.’ So I just went ahead and made it because I knew the idea was too good to waste as just a fantasy. 6

Volunteer Of The Month What did you like most about the Storytelling Festival? I grew up in London and I spent most weekends in the wonderful museums they have in that city. I grew up with great memories of those visits, but came to find that most people do not share my opinions! So for me it was so amazing to see children running around the museum, exploring the exhibits and asking questions. It was so essential to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of the children and to give them the opportunity to see that museums are not just places where you have to walk silently from room to room. By igniting an interest in traditional storytelling in younger audiences, hopefully we will get a generation of storytellers who can take on these traditions and develop them in unique and innovative ways.

What was your most important experience in Romania? Ahh, I can’t really say! The first thing that comes to mind I suppose is being mistaken for a Romanian! Occasionally people come up to me a launch into a rapid conversation in Romanian and until the moment that I admit I have no idea what they are talking about, I am actually a native. It is so important for me because I moved here from Vietnam where I lived in Hanoi as a teacher. I was always an alien and obviously an outsider in Vietnam, so it is really special for me to fit in. Despite my terrible language skills, people are so welcoming and I have made such wonderful friends. I feel truly accepted and at home. I think in my heart I might actually be a Romanian‌! 7

Art & Culture Waiting for Godot What: The performance of the National Theatre of Prague (with subtitles in Romanian) When: 13 April, 19:00 and 14 April, 17:00 Where: Hungarian Theatre of Cluj How much: 15 RON, 10 RON for students and retirees Description: A twoact play about a never-ending, dreary waiting for someone who might just possibly bring a sense of meaning to human life has been interpreted in countless, frequently contradictory manners. The main characters, the old tramps and clowns Vladimir and Estragon, sit beneath a tree and wait for somebody called Godot whose arrival is, however, delayed day after day. Their dialogues, based on repetition of seemingly incoherent fragments of sentences or clichĂŠs, do not say anything specific about the two men. Instead of protagonists, the heroes become spectators of a kind of play within a play, which is a stylised vision of oppression and violence as age-old bonds of human society. Their music was described by the Time Out New York Magazine as a sample of jazz post-bop that converges towards avant-garde without losing the buoyance of swing. Lucian Ban (pianist & composer) is considered to be ”one of the most gifted and talented pianist to come to New York in the past decade”. The Hans Koller Foundation nominated him twice for ”Best European Jazz Musician”. He has recorded 6 albums as a leader for labels in US and Europe. After concert Q&A session moderated by jazz critic Virgil Mihaiu. Contacts & Links: http://www.huntheater.ro/ 12

Art & Culture Pockets Full of Bread What: Performance in Hungarian Theatre of Cluj When: 15 April and 30 April, 20:00 How much: 15 RON, 10 RON for students and retirees Description: Two men meet at a well, from which the voice of a dog can be heard from time to time. The meeting of the nameless dog and the two men who can’t find the continuation of their lives creates a specific trio, which unveils to the spectator the situations of codependency, lack of love and of human relations. The fine woven play is one of Matei Vişniec’s creations – played continuously by the known theatrical workshops of the world – which give the most food for thought. Exceptional roles, virtuoso dialogues, quality humor, two actors in brilliant shape and a very talented young director – everything is given for a theatre evening to be approachable for all. Belarusian Cultural Party On 25th of March we had a MythBuster-style Belarusian cultural party, where everybody who came could find out where the country is situated, how people really live there and what languages they speak. It was a lot of fun and tasty traditional food there, the guests challenged themselves and found out how much they knew about Belarus. Also, the students of Belarusian, German and Latvian language courses got their certificates, and the Belarusian-Romanian Pocket Dictionary, made together with the students of the Belarusian course, was presented. Long live Belarus!

Activities of Youth 4 Community Spanish classes: Use and improve your Spanish! Starting from 18th of March I am giving Spanish classes. The classes are planned to be in 6 sessions, one time per week. We already have had two sessions, each time learning a bit of grammar, some useful vocabulary, listening and practising speaking. This week we tried “speed chatting” to get to know more with the others of the group and to improve our Spanish conversational skills. As the students have different levels I have divided them in 3 teams according to their level: Red, Yellow and Green; like “semáforo” (traffic lights) where the greens are the beginners, the yellows are those who have studied a bit and the reds are the ones that already know quite a lot. During the exercises we have common tasks for the entire group and also some exercises separated according to the level so that the classes would improve everyone’s knowledge. I am very happy how interested in learning Spanish the people here in Cluj are. I hope that even those who started this Spanish course without any previous knowledge will learn something useful and will be able to communicate on a basic level. It is very nice to hear that during the classes the students have had fun and have enjoyed the learning process. My dear students - see you next week! :-) 43

Graphic Design – Create a Logo with Illustrator Together with Incubator 107 Cluj I organized a workshop on how to work with the computer program Adobe Illustrator in March. I taught some basic skills in Illustrator – which is an important graphic program in the world of graphic design. For the ones who don’t know Illustrator, here is a short definition: Adobe Illustrator is an illustration program that can be used for print, multimedia, and online graphics. Whether you plan to design or illustrate multimedia artwork Illustrator offers all the tools needed to produce professional and quality results for even a beginner. It is often used to draw illustrations, cartoons, diagrams, charts and logos. I went to a marketing and design college, and studied Illustrator for one year. Since then I was able to use my skills a lot in our EVS project, where I had the pleasure of designing a lot of posters and some logos and icons. And this workshop was another way for me to go into the matter and concentrate on working with this program, because it’s a really nice one when you know it better – I would call it my favourite computer program. Only when teaching it I realized that you need a lot of practice to be able to appreciate it like I do and to be fluent in working with it. It was very interesting for me to change the sides. Until then I only knew the side of the student – I was the one who was listening to the teacher and learning from him. Now I had the opportunity to be the teacher. 44

Activities of Youth 4 Community

Illustrator is a lot connected with designing logos, so I also spoke about logos, what is important when you want create one, and showed some good examples. All in all there were three sessions. I am happy that a lot of people were interested. Actually I was expecting people to come more times, and I prepared the sessions so they would build on each other. Anyway, I think you need only a little motivation and something that gets you started with Illustrator to be able to use it. I think it was useful for everybody who attended the workshop to just do a few things in Illustrator, just to get started – that’s the most important step. There is a lot of material in the internet – online courses, numerous tutorials, videos, articles etc. – how you can improve yourself and learn more.
